33a, Waiting and Worrying, 08/12/2000, Saturday, early afternoon
Charles and Claire had been really upset, and since all the parents, with the exception of Jim Valenti, had been in very similar situations in the last few days, they could all relate really well. They felt bad for the Whitmans, not only were they again confronted with their son’s death, no they were thrown into the alien abyss head first without a helmet on, and to top it all off, they learned that they had a grandson.

Inside, in the Evans’ living-room, everybody waited nervously for the Whitmans to return. Everybody handled his or her tension differently.
*~~*~~*
Nancy and Diane went around, checking up on everybody’s wellbeing, offering help and support, in short, they were mothering the others, especially the kids. Diane even approached Michael, but he was too nervous and wanted to be left alone.
*~~*~~*
Jeff and Philip stood together near the glass-doors, commiserating with the newest members of their vastly growing ‘I Know An Alien-Club’. At one point Phil wanted to know, “Jeff, can you tell me seriously just how you feel about all of this? Because, right now, I really don’t know whether I’m coming or going!”

And so, for the first time since this craziness had started two days ago, Jeff had a moment to really think about things, to let them pass through his mind, remembering Liz’s meltdown two nights ago, how she was sparkling like a Christmas-tree; how all her friends rushed to help her; Michael’s orneriness; the alien news; the baby news; and last but most definitely not least, his wife’s new toughness! Looking at Philip Jeff answered “seriously? I don’t know! I’m confused and worried and exited and afraid and did I already mention confused?”

Taking a deep breath Jeff continued, “You know, Nancy and I had our anniversary and we’d been out for a nice candlelight dinner. It was quite romantic actually. We both were looking forward to some serious necking, …you know, necking?” After embarrassedly clearing his throat a few times he went on “So, you see, we were in high spirits when we got home. But as soon we parked the car we heard Liz crying out and then and there went our tryst.”

Philip watched his friend get lost in the events of said evening and discreetly coughed to bring him back to reality. “Oh, yeah, sorry, I just, you know, remembered. Anyway, when Nance and I walked into Liz’s room we got the shock of a lifetime. There, in the middle of the room stood my baby, sparkling like a Christmas tree and shooting off flashes and balls of fire. Around her were her friends and Jim was there too, worried but looking like this wasn’t news to him!”

”Anyway, that was our introduction into what Maria calls the ‘alien abyss’. And since then, things became crazier by the moment. Sometimes I’m afraid to blink my eyes, because every time I think that finally, I start to understand, something else pops up and adds to my confusion!” Sighing deeply Jeff added, “well, that’s what happened in the last two days, and honestly, I can’t tell you what I’m feeling, because right now I just don’t know. So, maybe, you want to ask me that question again in a year or two?” Chuckling Philip replied “I get were you’re coming from! I really do!”
*~~*~~*
Kyle had moved closer to Michael, figuring that Buddha wouldn’t like his treatment of the tall alien. After all, he did try hard to become a better person with Buddha’s help, it just didn’t work out all the time. At best of times Michael could be challenge to him, but this new Michael was just too damn hard to treat with humility, love and respect. Kyle was in a quandary though; because now he realized that Michael wasn’t his usual self, after all, he had gotten to know him quite well. Before Alex’s death they all had had some good times together. So, it came as no surprise to learn that Michael had been mind warped by the evil bitch. And of course, in the heat of the moment, he, Kyle, had not been the most diplomatic when treating the taller man.

Come to think of it, why were his talks with Michael suddenly not so very clear in his memory anymore? Because until just about now, he had remembered very clearly that his dad and himself had invited Michael over several times, to offer any kind of help and advice he might need. Of course it had been his dad who had done most of the talking those times, and Michael had been ok with it all, he had accepted some advice his dad had given him, and he had seemed to appreciate it even. At another time Kyle himself had approached Michael and talked with him about doing things together, even offered him his help and support if needed. At that time Michael had seemed to be open for his approach, and Kyle had felt like the two of them had a budding friendship.

But now, suddenly, those memories became fuzzy and very distant! Hhmmm, he needed to think on that some more, maybe even meditate and ask divine guidance, yeah, that was it, as soon as he had a moment to himself that was exactly what he’d do!
*~~*~~*
The girls sat behind the boys on the floor and were quite subdued. Isabelle and Maria were talking quietly, keeping their voices down because at that point they didn’t want the new members of the club to overhear their discussion and go ballistic on them. Maria worried “Izzi, do you think you could dreamwalk Spaceboy?” Seeing Isabelle’s inquiring look, Maria hastily added “Because, you know him, he just won’t talk to me anymore and I don’t know what else to do anymore. I’m really convinced the gerbil tampered with his head, damn the bitch, I really, really hate her, you know?”

Isabelle seriously considered her friend’s request and answered “I don’t know if I should, because years ago I had to promise Michael to never dreamwalk him, unless I let him know that I was doing it. Anyway, most of the time he can sense me in his dreams, so there’s no point in dreamwalking him, because he’ll just hide his thoughts and kick me out of his dream!”

Trying to find other ways to approach Michael Isabelle stayed quiet for a moment than asked Maria and Liz “Do you remember when all of us went and talked with him? Asked him what was wrong, if he needed help?” When the other girls nodded she continued “Anyway, I also talked to him alone, and he seemed to take me seriously, actually it was a really good talk, surprisingly so, you know, about everything, like his emancipation, his school, his work, well and all kinds of other things. We talked for some time, that’s also why I just don’t understand his problems now, you know, the way he behaves!”

Suddenly Maria started to hyperventilate and to throw her arms around agitatedly, “ohmygod, ohmygod, OHHH! MY! GOD!” As Isabelle was the first one to detect Maria’s cedar oil, bulging in the pocket of her hoody, she grabbed it, unscrewed the lid and waved it under the agitated girl’s nose, all the while raising her voice “Maria, here, take a sniff, come on, take one, maybe even two!” When the blonde girl started to calm down Isabelle cooed, “That’s it Maria, just calm down, then you can tell us everything.”

When Maria was finally able to utter some words she did so with a vengeance, completely forgetting to keep her voice very quiet, she said “You won’t believe this, you, like sooo won’t believe this!” Liz realized that this could take some time if her friend continued this way, nudged her and said “Try us, Maria, just give it to us straight!” “Yeah, straight!” echoed a curious Isabelle.

All of a sudden Maria stared into her eyes with such an intensity that Liz knew something big was up “Lizzy, do you remember the night before Tess left in the Granolith? Well, actually not in the Granolith, right. She just left some other way, not in the Granolith!” Maria mumbled quite embarrassed. Seeing her friend’s nod, Maria continued, this time she was whispering so quietly, the other girls almost didn’t hear her, “Well, you see, the thing is…!” here she stopped, and wasn’t able to hold any kind of eye contact with the other two.

Isabelle was getting very impatient Maria and nudged her on “Yeah, well, what’s the thing! Maria, stop dragging us along! This isn’t getting us anywhere and anyway…” After unsuccessfully trying to interrupt Isabelle in her tirade Liz sharply intercepted “Izzy, you’re not helping Maria like that. I’ve known her for a long time, and you just have to give her the time she needs, unless you know exactly what to do, then you can interrupt! Ok?”

When Liz was sure that Izzy had understood, she faced her best friend. Turning her dark, expressive eyes seriously on Maria, Liz calmly instructed her “Maria, sniff your oil and take a deep breath!” This seemed to bring Maria slowly out of her panic, and Liz continued, “look at me, just look at me Maria, and ignore everything else, can you do that?” When Maria’s action let Liz know that indeed her friend had calmed down and was rational again, she instructed “ok, Maria, now just stay calm, keep breathing steadily and just hold your oil near your nose.” Seeing her friend comply, Liz, with a look that included Isabelle, said “Now, Maria, can you just quietly tell us what this is all about?” Not ever expecting to hear was she would be told, Liz passed on the word to Maria and waited.

Maria was still sniffling on her oil and then knew the time had come to fess up. After inhaling deeply she just came out with “thenightbeforeyouweresupposedtoleaveMichaelandIhadsex!” “What? What about sex?” screeched Izzi, and after inhaling deeply shot of her next question more quietly “Maria, who had sex? Could you please repeat that, and this time slowly?” Isabelle ordered, steadily loosing her composure.

Leaning towards the other girls in the hopes she could just whisper her news as quietly as possible, Maria dutifully repeated “the night before you were supposed to leave, Michael and I had sex!” and seeing Liz and Isabelle’s shocked features she added for good measure “and it was the best night of my life!”

Now that she had her friends’ attention, Maria was on a roll “you know, first he even connected with me, because he wanted me to see him as he really is. Michael showed me every thing, like, with Hank and all that. And I saw him come out of his pod, and I saw all these stars, moons and rainbows, and, and, and… there was so much more!” cried a very frustrated Maria. The images were becoming blurry and then some of them just disappeared.

Shocked, Maria informed her friends, “this is strange, things start to grow fuzzy and I think I forgot something.” Scared Maria turned to Liz and wanted to know, “what’s going on?”

Remembering what their discussion had been about before Maria related her own very interesting news, Isabelle brought the topic back to their original one. “Anyway,” Isabelle said and looked very self-consciously at her feet as she went on “I think something strange is happening, because I always remembered these talks with Michael very clearly, but in the last few days it all has become sort of foggy, actually, more like Maria said, fuzzy, you know, really unreal, and I just don’t know what to think of it. Do you think I might have been mind-warped too? And then, I guess, this would mean Maria had been warped also, wouldn’t it?”

Stunned, Maria gripped her cedar oil more tightly and frantically sniffed on it. As soon as she was able she stuttered “I, I, just, you know, really, I feel just like that too!” she finally managed to finish her sentence. Both, Isabelle and Maria turned to Liz and raising their eyebrows, looked questioningly at her, demanding her input!

Put on the spot like this, Liz had to answer, “Max and I have come to the same conclusions. Especially Max remembered long talks with Michael, where he thought they had ironed out all the misunderstandings, but then Michael would turn around and do something crazy, accusing us of all kinds of stupid things, we just didn’t understand this. We thought that maybe Michael was jealous of Max, but we couldn’t really figure out why, I mean he’s never been jealous before, not really. Also, in these talks Max and Michael always seemed to come clear with all their troubles and differences. We were getting really worried, I mean, Michael is like a brother to Max, and I actually like him too. I mean, we didn’t always agree on everything, but he was always honest and helpful. So, when he started to act all crazy I would just explode or act so out of character for me that the whole situation just escalated. I’m sorry to say that I just put this puzzle together a short while ago.”

Shaking her head at all of this Liz mused out loud “I’ve been thinking about this and I think I know why we didn’t figure this out sooner. I think, that first, we didn’t expect this. I mean, seriously, as powerful as Tess is, she couldn’t have pulled this off alone and for us, Nacedo was dead. Then, secondly, it didn’t happen in a moment, no, it came slowly, it sort of just snuck up on us. And then before we were aware of what was happening, we were right in the middle of all of this mess.” Thinking for a moment about what she’d just told her friends Liz concluded “hmmm, yeah, I think that’s how it must’ve happened. What do you think?”

Seeing that she still had her friends’ attentions Liz continued “Anyway, I asked Max to connect with me, because I started to have these strong feelings, actually more like convictions, that the Granolith knew this, but didn’t want us to change anything. The thing is, Max felt it too. For some reason this has to play out this way, because Nacedo and Tess mind-warped most of us into certain behavior and if we suddenly change, they might find out about it and try something else!”

By this time Liz was suffering from a hormonal attack and started to feel weepy, tired, hungry and generally miserable; she just missed Max. ”Anyway,” sniffed Liz, “we all have to go the Granolith soon, and then everything will be revealed; probably right before we get Zander!” Starting to cry in earnest Liz got up and cried, “I’m going to Max’s room to lie down for a bit!” and left the bewildered girls sitting on the living room floor.

Continued Part 33a

Michael does some thinking, 08/12/2000, Saturday 1.55 pm
Michael had kept himself out of all the discussions on purpose, because over the last few days he’d received enough shit from his so called friends to last him a lifetime! It had been damn difficult for him, to just sit there and listen again how his life was being revealed, well, not just his life, but anyway. Granted, the Whitmans didn’t freak out as badly as the other parents had, but still the day wasn’t over yet! And when everything was said and done, he just came to the conclusion that he didn’t have to like it, did he? Realising that pondering on the talks that were over was a futile project, he let his eyes wander around the room.

After a while Michael noticed Kyle sitting closer to him than he had been in quite a long time and wondered what Buddha-Boy was up to. He decided to ignore him and do something more important and meaningful, like brooding on this current messed up situation. But then Diane had to interrupt his important musing with some mundane question or other, as if he couldn’t get himself some food or drink. Heck, he knew this house like the back of his hand; he could fend for himself. And then, after he had turned down Diane, and she had turned away with this hurt look on her face, Nancy had looked at him disapprovingly and shaken her head; and once again he’d wondered ‘what the hell did I do now!’ He decided to ignore her too and went back to his important thoughts.

But apparently it just wasn’t to be, because now the chicks had decided to plague him with their incessant jabbering right behind him. It was really annoying, then they started to whisper, and he had to listen really hard to understand them. That annoyed him even more, how was he supposed to think, if he had to concentrate on listening so hard, he couldn’t think a single thought! He almost left then and there, but then thought better of it. He wouldn’t let some chicks drive him away, no sir, not him. So he sat there, doing his best to ignore everybody while eavesdropping on the girls chattering away. They were probably badmouthing him anyway.

He became furious when he heard Maria ask Izzi to dreamwalk him, how dare she! Next his feelings got confused, should he be angry or touched when he heard how they were worried about him.

But confusion won, when he heard Maria’s statement about something that supposedly happened the night before they had meant to leave. And by Maria’s looks and agitation it must’ve been something very interesting indeed, damn, why oh, why did they have to whisper so quietly! The only thing he was able to hear had been ‘What about sex?’, and that he’d only understood, because Izzi had been shocked into forgetting to whisper. But as much as Michael was wrecking his brains, whatever Maria talked about completely eluded him, because he’d most definitely know if ever he should be so lucky and have had sex with Maria.

Of course Izzi’s next statement about those talks they supposedly had didn’t make much sense either. He was wondering if he should ask Isabelle if she was dreaming, making up stories or she had been mind-warped!

MIND-WARPED! Jesus, fucking Christ! Now Michael started to get worried, his protective instincts started to rise with a vengeance. He worriedly watched an agitated Liz leave the room, but since the girls seemed to understand this, he decided to keep his eyes and ears open and concentrate on some serious thinking for the moment.

Seeing a pad and a pencil on the little table right next to his chair, he grabbed them and decided to start one of Liz’s much valued lists, now was as good a time as any, to find out if little Ms. Parker was right with her obsession. Holding on to the pencil for dear life Michael wrinkled his brow and began to formulate his questions on paper:
1. What would happen if we all were warped?
2. Who would profit from it?
3. How can I tell who was mind-warped?

The first answer was easy, depending on the warps; the whole group would be at odds! Guess what, that’s what we are, shit, shit, shit!!! Come to think of it, some of those insults and dressing downs I received from the others over the last few weeks don’t seem so clear anymore; actually they start to get quite a bit fuzzy.

Since he had the answer to number one, the one to question number two was easily found; Nacedo, Tess and through them Khivar would profit from it. Christ, what the fuck was going on? How could he have been so stupid! In his agitation Michael almost dropped the pencil.

Now on to number three: let’s start with Max.
Max has always been like a brother to me. He got me out of all the trouble I managed to get myself in. He always came to my help, treated me like an equal, not like a poor and stupid relative. We had our differences, but we always respected each other. I most definitely don’t remember any of those talks that they mentioned, but then again, the bad treatment that I remembered seems to grow fuzzier by the moment. Ok, something’s really fishy here!

Next Isabelle:
Isabelle is my sister, if not by blood, most definitely by choice. Here too, I don’t remember any of the talks she mentioned, but vaguely some snide remarks about the way I mess up everything, and about the poor control of my powers. She never used to do that, not even when I really blew things up, no, she always encouraged me and helped me restore the things I couldn’t. Oh, boy, this is sooo fucked up!

Then there’s Maria:
Maria, the love of my life, my very own hurricane. I wonder what she was talking about if it had Izzi exclaim ‘What about sex?’ She couldn’t have been talking about us, now, could she? Who was she talking about. Max and Liz, anybody else? Anyway, back to the topic of Maria, yes she has a temper, that’s true, but she’s always been honest with me; believed in me and trusted me, even when I was full of doubts. She’s never called me trailer trash; that I know now for sure. No, in fact, she repeatedly tried to support me, asked what was wrong. She was really pissed at me, when she found out about all the food that I stole.

Anyway, what the hell did I do that for? Stealing? Hey, that’s something else, I never stole, why should I start now? I’ll have to talk to Jeff about that!!! (Underlined twice)

OK, Kyle:
now there’s a weird guy, I really don’t understand him. To be honest, he’s turning out to be a really good friend and ally to all of us. I’m really glad he was there for Liz! Now that was a huge fuck up on my part, what the fuck was I thinking? I mean, Liz and I don’t always see eye-to-eye, true, but she’s always treated me with respect. She even got me the job at the CrashDown, and here, I repay her by stealing! Then I treat her like that’s her fault? Just how crazy is that? Anyway, I’m still figuring out Kyle here, emmm, I don’t get his fixation with Buddha, but it doesn’t seem to hurt anybody, and as long as it helps him, I guess it’s ok. Actually, before this whole mess started, we did hang out a few times and it was really quite a blast. So, why the heck should he put me down the way I barely remember now? I just wish he’d stop drumming his fingers on his glass; that really annoys the hell out of me! Drumming fingers? (Underlined twice) Where did I hear that one before? It could be important; I’ll have to look into it as soon as I’m done here!!

And let’s not forget my queen Liz:
I’ve already noted a few things above, but she never told anybody that I was the one who stole her journal. I mean, if she wanted to get me into trouble with his highness, all she’d had to do was tell him about it, but she didn’t. She’s as straight and honest as they come. Also, she’d never do anything to hurt Maria or anybody else for that matter. Except lately she was on my case quite often! Hmmm, come to think of it, why would I treat her the way I did lately? All I had to do is think her name and I’d get so angry that I wanted to hurt her, make her feel small and stupid! Why the fuck would I do something as asinine as that? I mean, I always admired her smarts and her courage and how she always treated everybody with respect, never badmouthed anybody, well, except for Pam Troy! Christ, all this thinking is really getting to me. Fuck, fuck, fuck, we all need to talk about this, and soon!

And I haven’t even started with Jim Valenti:
Jim, who right now was bringing in the last (and most dangerous and unpredictable) parent into the ‘IKAA-Club’: Jim’s been the first adult that I came to trust fully. Since he found out about us he has done nothing but help and protect us. Shit, shit, shit, we’re in deep shit!!!

And suddenly, in utter horror, Michael could see his fingers start to drum a certain rhythm on the pad he was writing on. Oh, fuck, what the hell was going on. He tried to stop his drumming fingers only to see his right hand drumming the same beat with the pencil. Fuck, fuck, fuck! And suddenly he remembered when exactly and in what association he’d heard about it: Alex and Kyle drummed with their fingers when they came out of Tess’ mind-warp.

Desperately trying to stay calm, Michael looked around, thinking of discreet ways to handle this potentially explosive situation. There were Jeff and Philip in some deep discussion. The moms were by the sliding doors, spying on the Whitmans, trying to find out how they were faring.

Realising that, since these parents were all greenhorns in all matters of the alien kind, they could not be confronted with this newest crisis. He wished for Jim’s calming presence but knew with absolute certainty that this time, the kids had to fend for themselves. Izzy and Maria were quietly sitting behind him, whispering. And Kyle, Kyle was sitting beside him, seemingly deep in thought, drumming away on his glass.

Swallowing his pride and hoping the others would do the same, (after all, if he was right, and it seemed more than probable that he was, he too hadn’t been the best friend lately!) he carefully evaluated the situation and thought of a discreet way to solve the problem, without ending in a catastrophe.

If nothing else, Michael was a man of action, so he did the next best thing that came to his mind and wrote a note to Isabelle saying: ‘Izzy, this is serious. Find some lame ass excuse for the parents and then ask Maria, Kyle and myself to meet Liz in Max’s room. We have to talk without them. M’. As calmly as possible, Michael passed the note to Isabelle and waited…

33b, Secret meeting in Max’s room, 08/12/2000, Saturday 2.45 pm
After Isabelle received Michael’s cryptic note, she slowly turned to look at him and saw his seriousness. It seemed like his moodiness that he had been sporting lately had been replaced with sincerity. Gracefully standing up she turned to the moms and said, “mom, we’re going to stay with Liz for a bit and just hang out. If you need us, just give shout, ok?” Then she grabbed Maria’s hand and pulled her up, next she moved to Kyle and ordered “Kyle, come along!” Leading the two teens towards the stairs she called over her shoulder “Michael, do you feel like joining us on this fine day?”

Grumbling Michael stood up grabbed his list and followed the others. After all, he had to keep up appearances, didn’t he? Before they reached Max’s bedroom, Isabelle pulled them all into her own bedroom and bluntly asked Michael, “What’s this all about, Michael? I swear if you pull another stunt, I’ll give you nightmares for the rest of you life!”

This new and improved Michael staid calm and replied, “No stunt, I promise. I have found out a few things, important things and we have to discuss them so everybody knows what we’re dealing with. It’s…” Michael stopped in the middle of his sentence, openly staring at Maria, who was finger drumming a certain rhythm on Isabelle’s desk. Pointing at her drumming fingers he added, “we have to talk about THAT!” No further explanation was needed. Quietly they moved out of Izzi’s room and into Max’s, where they found Liz resting on the bed.
*~~*~~*
By the way her friends moved into the room, with all the subdued energy they were giving off, Liz deducted that trouble was brewing. She wasn’t up for any more trouble. She was just bone weary, and wanted nothing else than to sleep. Sleep and not wake up until she was good and ready, that wasn’t too much to ask for, was it? But viewing her friends she knew she could forget that wish. As was her way, Liz decided to forego any chitchat and asked point blank ”What’s up guys?”

Isabelle, Maria and Kyle all turned toward Michael, expecting him to broach the newest problem. Michael found himself thrown into this situation where he didn’t really know if he should start by apologising or jump straight into his unprepared speech and hope for the best. But then, Liz surprised him by sincerely asking him “Michael, what do you have to say?”

”Why don’t we all sit down?” Michael asked to give himself some added time and followed his advice by taking the chair beside the desk. The others made themselves comfortable on the bed and expectantly turned towards Michael.

Unused to receive so much attention, Michael stuttered “Ok, hmm, I ehh, I ehh overheard…” at this comment his face turned an interesting shade of red, but he bravely continued, “some things and with everything that I knew it just didn’t make any sense. You know, first I thought, you were just making up some stories, but then I realised that you were all very serious and I started to think about it all…”

Noticing everybody was still listening to him Michael explained “Things just didn’t add up. You remembered situations completely differently from what I remembered. And then something strange started to happen, things started to become sort of fuzzy…” After this last bit, Michael avoided eye contact with everybody and self-consciously stared at the plain white ceiling, afraid of being ridiculed for saying something so stupid. But after he heard Liz’s comment of “I know exactly how it is, Michael, because Max and I felt the same way!” the tall alien felt justified and was able to face the others again.

He became aware that his friends were taking his words very seriously indeed. It almost felt like in the old times; for the first time in a long while, his friends treated him with respect and sincerity, and he found himself returning these sentiments wholeheartedly.

Sheepishly, Michael reached into his jeans back-pocket and grabbed his notes. After staring at them for a moment he waved them in the air and mumbled “I tried Liz’s list writing, and even though mine turned out to look sort of muddled and unorganised, I’m shocked to admit that it really works!” At this point Michael offered Liz a small smile to test the waters, and as Liz gratefully answered with a brighter one of her own, he was relieved and started to decipher his list, beginning with his questions, and continuing with his observations and answers.

After he’d read the last part of the list, Michael waited for some kind of reaction and started to worry, as none were forthcoming. When he looked up and met his friends’ eyes, he was startled to be faced with pride and respect, and it was very obvious that even though nobody had said anything, they believed and trusted Michael again.

Suddenly Isabelle started to play finger drums and they all broke out laughing, for some reason, they all found it hilariously funny and they laughed until tears were streaming down their cheeks. This bout of laughter had cleared the tension considerably and now the discussion started in earnest.

They compared their ‘so called meetings and talks’ with Michael and found out, that interestingly enough, when there were only two people, like Michael and another one, they both had clear memories of the same events with completely different topics and results. Michael always felt put down, ridiculed, even insulted afterwards. The others always found Michael to be quite receptive at these ‘talks’ promising to stop doing whatever he’d been doing wrong, trying to think before he acted.

The strange thing was, that when they were in a group talking with Michael, the group came away feeling relieved that the talk had gone so well and Michael had been so receptive and open, whereas for Michael, he always felt like they had ganged up on him, like he was the odd man out, didn’t belong, because all he apparently did was mess up.

They had found out that everybody except Michael was able to behave normally because they were convinced that they were in the right of things; after all, Michael had seemed so reasonable and they had even come to some agreements. When Michael, believing everything had gone badly and against him, rebelled, the others remembered the times when Michael would go off on one of his quests, and Max had to bail him out again and again, and they felt justified in their anger and resentment against him.

By now they all were drumming their fingers from time to time, but amazingly enough, they weren’t really worried, because now they were working together towards a solution and they decided that as soon as little Zander was here, the whole group with Jim, would go to the Granolith and ask for help.

As Michael explained his observations to his avid listeners he felt like he was coming home after a long absence, where everything was still a bit awkward because you had to get used to each other again, but everybody was happy to be back together. These feelings let Michael be hopeful for their little group. He knew they needed some serious talking, but he was hopeful nonetheless!

While they cleared the air amongst them, Michael suddenly received some new memories, very indistinct at first, but they got stronger fast and he started to remember that during the summer, when Tess was ‘helping’ him to control his powers, she’d always dropped remarks like: “you know, Michael, the other day Max said that he’s given up hope that you will ever be able to control your powers!” or “is Maria mad with you Michael? Because I heard her say to Isabelle, that she couldn’t really bring you home to meet her mom, since you’re manners… Oh, well, you know what a drama queen Maria is, just forget what I said, I’m sure I completely misunderstood her anyway!” or “Michael, did you do something wrong? Because Max just sort of mentioned, well he was actually quite angry, when he said, that he was sick and tired of bailing you out all the time!” Then Tess would add something like: “Michael, just ignore them, they don’t know you as well as I do! They don’t respect you as I do!”

Michael had decided to share this bit of information with the others and ended it by saying “you know, I never really realised what she was doing, because she’d only do it from time to time, or when I had a hard time controlling my powers. Or when Maria and I had one of our fights, you know, they weren’t really serious, we’d always make up rather fast!” and looking at Maria, Michael added seriously “You remember them, don’t you? They weren’t really serious, we liked to fight, because that’s what we’d do and it was fun, wasn’t it?” Maria nodded vigorously and added “absolutely, they were always a lot of fun, I missed our fights Michael! I really did!” she ended on a weepy note…

Continued Part 33b

*~~*~~*~~*~~*~~*~~*
Let’s go, 08/12/2000, Saturday 3.35 pm
Suddenly Liz stood up; her energy started to flow around her and crackled. Kyle stepped up to her and started to breathe with her until she had calmed down enough to stay somewhat calm. She stretched up to her full height, witch was still considerably shorter than everybody else present, and with a mean and calculated coldness hissed “I have to admit that those bastards played us well. They wormed their way into our group, found out our strengths, weaknesses and our fears and played them to the hilt.”

By now the dark haired young woman was pacing around her friends, mumbling and muttering to herself and having a conversation with some unseen force. The others were fascinated with Liz’s strange behavior and watched every step she took. At some point Liz started to gesticulate wildly with her hands and said “are you sure that the time has come? What do we do, how do we prepare ourselves?” and after Liz listened intently she stated calmly “so be it!”

Making eye contact with each one of her friends and then nodding at them to emphasise her next words, Liz informed them all ”The time has come, we all go to the Granolith. First there will be a cleansing ritual, then everybody will get all the information needed, then we will be cleared of any mind games they played on us! After that we’re ready, we’ll be in contact with Max and the summit and witness Khivar’s arrival with his entourage at the station. Then Max will get little Zander and Leanne away from them and send them to us in the Granolith. Then Nicky boy will do his part and only after all that has happened, Khivar, Tess, Nacedo and General Ronar will be taken care off!”

Suddenly Liz loosened up considerably and announced “Guys and Girls, you can start to think of some just punishments for those bastards. But remember, we’re nothing like them, so no killing, and no bloodshed; be creative and severe, but just! Oh, and if it hurts their ego, well that would be acceptable too!” Liz turned around and strode purposefully towards the door and into the hall, calling over her shoulder “are you all with me? Let’s see how the parents fared with the Whitmans and then it’s time to go!”

For a moment the group left behind stood there, shocked by Liz’s disclosers, but then ran after her, not wanting to miss a moment of what was sure to come!
*~~*~~*~~*~~*~~*~~*
Meanwhile in the living-room…
After the Kids’ exit, all four parents sat together, unsure of what to do. Wait for the Whitman’s? Go and protect the kids? It was a bit late for that one! Slay some evil aliens? Well, that had to wait then right now there weren’t any around. Scream as a way to get rid of their fears and frustrations? No, grownups didn’t scream, what a dilemma.

Suddenly Jeff had to chuckle and as he received inquiring looks for it he justified himself “I was just thinking of poor Jim with Amy DeLuca. Do you think he’s still breathing?”

Nancy hit her husband on his arm and scolded “Jeff! That’s so not funny!” but ruined her rebuke by starting to laugh out loud until she hiccupped “I… I can just see them. Jim with his Stetson in hand, groveling, and then there’s Amy between sniffing her damn cedar oil, hyperventilating and screeching at the sheriff ‘Jim how could you? How could they?’” Coming down from her bout of laughter Nancy added “But, you know, when everything is said and done, she’ll calm down and quietly say, ‘why didn’t you trust me with this sooner? I would’ve understood and helped!’”

Diane was whipping the tears from her eyes, she’d been laughing that hard, and then added “Nancy is right, as soon as Amy is over the first shock, she’ll take this whole alien business in her stride. She’ll be proud of Maria and the kids and adopt Michael on the spot, poor boy, won’t know what hit him. And then, woe betide anyone who dares to threaten the kids ever again!”

Sagely Phil nodded at his wife’s words and mumbled “damn right! And not just that, they’ll have me to deal with too!” Jeff put in his “damn right, me too!” and the women both nodded decisively, “Yes, most definitely yes!”

After this the four of them calmed down and sat there, waiting quietly for the Whitmans…
*~~*~~*
Finally…
When the glass-doors slid opened to reveal the Whitmans, everybody was surprised at what they saw. Instead of this upset, confused and broken couple they were faced with a couple brimming with new found hope, confidence and purpose. The Whitmans walked right into the middle of the living-room and Charles, coming straight to the point, asked, “What do we need to do to bring little Zander home?”

This question started a new round of discussions and explanations. How do you tell new grandparents that their grandson is on another planet? That they don’t really know how, but they do know they will bring him home? That they don’t know when, but they do know it’ll be very, very soon?
*~~*~~*
Diane felt the burden of being the hostess heavily; under normal circumstances she loved to entertain, the more the merrier, but this, today? She felt like a fish out of water. Deciding that they all had had enough time to stare at the Whitmans, Diane gracefully stood up and walked over to them. Charles decisive manner had surprised and deeply impressed her, and now she stood before him, searching in his eyes and found the reassurance she needed. Impulsively Diane hugged first Charles than Claire and than pushed them over the empty loveseat, urging them to sit down on it.

When she was satisfied with her efforts, Diane addressed them “My friends, as you know, we too have been thrown into this situation rather abruptly and are still trying to come to terms with it. But, please, be assured, that all of us…” here she stopped to include her husband and the Parkers by pointing at them, before picking up “…all of us will do our best to help and support you in anyway possible, just the word.”

Nancy joined Diane and continued “to be honest with you, we’re still very confused about everything, but Jim was able to clear up a few things for us, but he also said not to worry to much about anything, because everything would become clearer after we had some time to assimilate all this ‘alien amongst us’ stuff! So you see, we can help each other finding our way through this maze called ‘alien abyss’!”

Looking around Claire missed the sheriff and asked, “Where is Jim? Why isn’t he here?” The answering chuckles confused her and she wanted to know “what’s so funny about that?”

Hastily Phil gulped down some of his beer and almost choked on it, as soon as he was able he coughed “poor Jim is out there somewhere, bringing Amy DeLuca up-to-date!”

”Oh!” was Claire’s first response and after a moment she smilingly added “OH! I see! Yeah, you’re right, poor guy!” Still smiling, Claire changed the topic to what was really important and said in a no-nonsense way “Ok, I think we can forego anything alien right now, and wait with the questions until we’ve come to terms with these new circumstances, because it would only confuse us more, right Charley ?”

”You’re definitely right sweetheart, I think we should turn to the more pressing and practical things, like what we need to get ready for the little one.” This practical side of Charles, which was suddenly emerging, seriously surprised everyone, because Charles Whitman was known for many a thing, but most definitely not for being practical. After overcoming their shocks they could hear Charles still speaking. ”You know, once we learned that Alex was going to be our only child, we got rid of his baby things, I mean, there was absolutely no sense in keeping it around, so we gave it to some charity.” And in good Charley Whitman fashion he rambled on, “Of course, now we could use it, but it’s too late for that. This of course means that we have to buy everything, from food, to clothes, to furniture to diapers...”

At that, Claire turned inquiring eyes towards the women and asked, “How old is Zander? What does he eat? What size clothes does he wear? We need to know all these things to get ready for him. And anyway, when is he coming?”
*~~*~~*
Upon returning to the living room, the kids found the grownups in good spirits. They overheard Claire’s last question and Liz answered, “Now, we have to go now!”

34, The Call of the Granolith 08/11+12/2000, Friday/Saturday
Beside the radio tower along the old highway, 08/12/2000, Saturday 1.15 pm

Riverdog was a very patient man; he refused to give in to this modern phenomenon called ‘stress’. He allowed himself the luxury of always taking enough time in all of his endeavours, thus completely avoiding stress. But he today was a special day; he was flustered, antsy, his heart was beating at least twice as fast as usual and couldn’t wait for whatever was coming.

Long before the allotted time he found himself sitting on a rock beside the old radio tower along the old highway, awaiting things to come, acknowledging only to himself that ‘stress’ had finally found him with a vengeance.

While waiting, the old shaman decided to sink into a meditation to ask for divine guidance and to gather strength and wisdom for the mystery that lay ahead.

Riverdog, Eddy and Serena, 08/12/2000, Saturday 3.00 pm
Minutes or hours later, Riverdog really couldn’t tell just how much time had actually passed, he opened his eyes and wasn’t surprised to find his granddaughter Serena and her husband Eddy sitting quietly together on the sandy ground close by, waiting patiently for him to return to reality. Giving the young ones a nod in greeting, Riverdog slowly stood up and stretched all the kinks out of his old and rusty joints.

After checking the time by looking at the sun’s position in the sky the old shaman remained still, listening to a voice that nobody else could hear. And suddenly he knew the time had come. Watching his two companions, Riverdog realized that they too had been ‘called’. Together they turned towards the rock formation out in the desert and started to walk towards Eddy’s truck.
*~~*~~*
Following Riverdog’s orders, Eddy drove them into the desert. At the foot of the rock-formation they left the old truck and climbed up the rocky trail until they were halfway up the formation. There they sat on some rocks and waited for things to come…

Johnny and Kathy Dubois 08/11/2000, Friday 2.30 pm
After his phone conversation with his sister Nancy, Johnny chuckled and wondered what his ‘petite soeur’ was up to. For as long as he remembered, his favorite sibling had been good for surprises. Well, maybe his little sister’s idea would bring some change to his otherwise well organized and controlled life. Not that he was complaining, oh no, he was well aware of the fact that he had been blessed with an extraordinary life. Even though his career had started in the lowest ranks of the military, he soon had worked his way up the ranks. Later he joined the FBI. Once there, he became obsessed with all things to do with security and at one point he had been one of the President’s bodyguards. Meeting all these heads of states had been a unique experience that he still valued highly.

After a while all the rules and regulations in such big organization became stifling and, after long talks with his better half Kathy, he had come to the conclusion to start a business of his own, where he could bring in all his own ideas and values, and where nobody told him what to do. All his friends had though him crazy, to give up such a highly coveted job, what for? For something where he carried all the risks? Granted, he had earned himself quite a reputation amongst his peers, but still…

But with the full support of his wife he had taken the plunge and never regretted it. His business was one of the best in the country and his academy for training highly qualified bodyguards was the best, period! He was very proud of all of his achievements and very thankful to his wife and kids for all the unwavering support and understanding they had given him. Well, he knew full well that he was one lucky bastard!
*~~*~~*
Suddenly Johnny began to feel very exited at the prospect of visiting Roswell, and if he hadn’t been preoccupied with his sister’s cryptic words, he would’ve been rather worried about his reaction. Seeing his sister was fun and he always looked forward to it, but he could honestly say that it was not exiting, at least not this exiting. And Roswell, well Roswell was a tourist trap and most definitely not exiting. So, why was he feeling like this?

Growing impatient Johnny decided to look for these answers at some later time, because right now he wanted to be somewhere else. Not in the mood to wait until he found his wife, he just yelled “Cherie!” and when he didn’t receive an answer immediately he yelled again, this time just a little louder “CHERIE!!!” As soon as Jean heard Kathy’s footsteps coming down the stairs he called out “what do think of taking a trip to Roswell?”

And while he was still voicing his question, the strangest thing happened: he though he heard his wife, who was just coming around the corner, say “to Roswell” at the same time as he had. ‘I think I’m hearing things’ Johnny convinced himself and waited for his wife to reach him.

As Kathy joined him she asked “Johnny, what do think of taking a trip to Roswell?” noticing the strange way her husband regarded her she clarified “You know, I’m not really sure why, but these last few days I have been thinking a lot about Nancy and her family. We haven’t seen them in a while and I think its time for a visit, don’t you think so?”

It wasn’t very often that Jean Batiste Dubois was speechless, but right now he was lost for words. Shaking his head to clear his thoughts he decided to take a direct approach and just nodded his agreement.
*~~*~~*
Before Kathy went back upstairs to pack some essentials, Johnny informed her of Nancy’s call. He explained his sister’s need for their visit, and Johnny asked Kathy to pack some schooling stuff that she might need to teach Liz and her friends some rules of etiquette. Then he told his wife that they hadn’t decided on a specific time yet, but it would be soon.

While he was explaining this he felt the sudden urge to leave for Roswell now and not to wait for his sister to call to finalize their plans. As always, he discussed this development with Kathy and was relieved when she agreed to leave immediately.

If the kids weren’t around when they arrived, they would just hang out with his sister and Jeff. Maybe they would even hang out at the CrashDown, he’d always loved that place, because it showed Nancy and Jeff’s absurd sense of humor and with their shrewdness they had turned the diner into a big success. Johnny knew well enough that his family had been shocked to learn that a Dubois was married to an owner of such a tourist trap, the shame of it!

Johnny returned to his office to do what he felt he had to do. As always, when Jean Batiste Dubois was called on a job, he liked to be prepared for any eventuality and he had no intentions of changing this pattern, not even for his favorite sister. He had learned some very hard lessons a long time ago, tough lessons, lessons that had left their mark and since then he had been slightly paranoid on occasion, but he was convinced that a good dose of paranoia never hurt in his line of work!

With that in mind he booted his computer and began searching in his files for anything to do with Roswell and teenagers. He hadn’t forgotten the mysterious shooting at the CrashDown and the following rumors of the owner’s daughter being shot. Chuckling quietly as he let his fantasy run amuck with all the possibilities of what could be found there, like ‘alien teenagers with healing powers, right’! He was glad that he had bookmarked the pages he needed and after quickly glancing over them, he printed the most serious looking articles and also some of the most outrageous ones, because one never knew, truth could be found in the most unlikely places.
*~~*~~*
Three hours later, after all the necessary phone calls to their offspring and to their next-door neighbors to inform them of their upcoming absence, Mr. and Mrs. Dubois left their home.

Kathy was driving them out of the city and onto the highway. They had decided to drive until sunset, and then they would pick a nice hotel, have a good dinner and spend the night. They would continue in the morning, after a good rest and a hearty brunch. Now that they were on their way this sense of urgency had lessened.

While his wife was driving Johnny was reading up on all the information he had brought along…
*~~*~~*
The Dubois’ on the old highway, 08/12/2000, Saturday
After crossing the border into Chaves County, New Mexico, Johnny drove them towards Roswell at a speed he felt was just right, not too fast and not too slow, just right. Kathy took over the wheel after their coffee break and drove until their lunch stop in a little Mexican Restaurant in Dexter. This time Johnny continued driving while his wife took a nap in the front passenger seat. As they were nearing Roswell, Johnny unconsciously changed the direction and kept on driving.

When Kathy woke up after dozing for a while she felt a bit disoriented. Looking outside all she saw was a barren desert landscape, miles and miles of nothingness, dotted with ranches in the distance. Curiously she looked towards her husband and inquired “Hey, Johnny, where are we? This looks very unfamiliar to me.”

Glancing at Kathy, Johnny explained, “I’m not really sure what we’re doing here.” And at his wife’s worried look he went on, “You know, like we both just suddenly knew we had to go to Roswell now and not wait?” Seeing her nod Johnny continued, “It was just like that, I just knew I had to take this road and I have a feeling we’ll be there soon!”

”What do you meant when you say soon?” Kathy wanted to know. Looking at her wristwatch she stated “well, now it’s two thirty, how soon we’ll we be there, wherever there is?”

Chuckling at his wife’s questions Johnny answered “I don’t know Kathy, but real soon. I’ll know when we’ll get there, that’s all I can tell you.”

After a few more miles Johnny suddenly swerved off the road and drove towards a rock formation in the middle of the desert. Sensing his wife’s curiosity he stopped her inquiries by saying, “We’re almost there! See that old truck over there, at the foot of those rocks? That’s where we’re going.” Upon reaching the old truck they exited their car and looked around. Kathy was the first one to notice some movement halfway up the rocky trail. Johnny followed her pointing finger and he too saw movement and realized that there were some people sitting up there.

Quietly he walked to the trunk of his car, opened it and extracted some sneakers for the two of them. Handing Kathy hers he said, “Better put on some good shoes, we have some climbing to do!”

Desert View, Penthouse, 08/12/2000, Saturday
After a good night’s rest, Cal had started the new day slowly. First he’d had a long and relaxing bath in the luxurious bathroom of the suite. Then he’d ordered a big gourmet breakfast, with lots and lots of French bread with Swiss cheese and delicious Italian cappuccino. With it he’d ordered some deluxe Russian caviar and crackers. Some fresh peaches rounded off the fabulous meal. He was lucky that over the years his taste buds had adapted to the earth taste palette and were almost like the humans. All he needed was a drop or two of Tabasco sauce or a drop or two of lemon juice to enhance earth food.

While he enjoyed his breakfast Cal had to admit that Nancy Parker and her friend knew how to please their guests. The suite was tastefully furnished; the rooms were light, airy and very comfortable. Everything was very luxurious, not too much, just right. And the food, ahhh well, all he’d had so far had been top quality and deserved at the very least four stars on the gourmet-scale, in his opinion anyway.

After his late breakfast Cal left his suite and went into town. It was time to see what he could find out about the situation of his charges.

Visiting Amy’s alien themed store and the CrashDown brought him no new knowledge, except that none of the kids were around, even the parents seemed to be missing. But since everything was calm, he went back to the hotel, planning on returning later in the afternoon. After contacting Mercedes and giving her some orders, Cal turned on the TV to catch up on the news.

Before long he heard it again, the call of the Granolith, and this time he knew he had to go to the pod-chamber. Filled with excitement and curiosity Cal picked up his car keys and left the suite, thinking ‘finally, the time has come’
*~~*~~*
Cal drove into the desert towards the rock-formation. When he arrived at the foot of the trail he was shocked to find two other cars already there, parked in the shade behind some rocks. As he looked up towards the chamber’s entrance, he could see some people sitting on rocks, waiting.

After a closer look he could see an older Native American and realised that this had to be Riverdog. Cal knew from his observations that the old shaman was involved with his charges. More curious than ever, Cal started the climb up the rocky trail to join the others in waiting for whatever was to come…

UFO-Museum, 08/12/2000, Saturday 1.00 pm
To surprise his young daughter Sidney, who was her father’s darling, Brody Davies had invited the other children who had been saved by a miracle this last Christmas. It had been a spur of the moment decision. Brody still wasn’t quite sure as to why he’d had this urge to invite them all, except of course, to please his baby. Now he wondered why he hadn’t thought of it sooner, and the kids seemed to have ball. His home, and now his museum was filled with laughter, yelling and running kids. Heck, he was having a ball too, and to see Sidney so happy was an extra bonus for him.

Brody had needed weeks, even months, to come to terms with the miraculous healing of his only child. After the years of worrying, praying, and all the tears he’d had shed, knowing that his child would never reach adulthood, he still found it exceedingly difficult to let go of his over-protectiveness, of his fears and worries, but he was working on it. Life was too short and too precious to waist on fears and worries, or on second-guessing the reasons for this miracle. He’d vowed to himself that he would do his best to live his life to the fullest and make sure his daughter did the same. Now they were all there at the UFO-Museum and having a ball.

Suddenly all the kids calmed down and started to whisper with each other. After they had come to an agreement, they all walked up to Brody and Sidney told him “Daddy, it’s time, we have to go!” “Go where, sweetheart?” Brody asked and while he asked the knowledge of the destination came to his mind and he added “yes, let’s grab some apples and a few bottles of water and go!” and together they walked out of the UFO-Museum to the SUV that was parked in front.

After all the kids were secured in their seats, Brody climbed behind the wheel and drove off. He knew exactly where he was going, but he still wondered why.

When they reached the destination Brody parked the SUV beside the other cars and wondered about whom they were going to meet. When they reached the foot of the rocky trail he looked up and saw some people sitting halfway up the trail. Carefully he guided the children up the path to meet the others waiting there…

Jim and Amy, 08/12/2000, Saturday 2.00 pm
Since Jim had become a member of the ‘IKAA-Club’ he had witnessed many a strange thing, but finding Amy DeLuca sitting on the front steps of her house waiting for him still managed to unnerve him. When Maria had informed him of her mom’s plans to stay at home and work in her office, Valenti had decided to just show up and sort of kidnap her. He thought it best if Amy didn’t have much time to let loose on her imagination.

As Amy noticed Jim’s approach she stood up, picked up her purse and addressed him “Hi Jim, I’ve been waiting for you!”

”What? Why? I mean, hi Amy!” a flustered Jim exclaimed. He walked up to his sweetheart and hoped to cover up his insecurity by planting her a big one on the lips; and it worked too, Amy was quiet for some time.
*~~*~~*
After picking up Amy DeLuca for this much dreaded talk, Jim Valenti drove out into the desert, thinking that out there there wasn’t much that Amy could break, on the other hand she’d have a supreme choice of rocks, but then again, here she could scream and yell and rant all she wanted, and nobody would witness it. Then again, nobody would witness his death either, if she should decide to kill him!

But counting on the Valenti charm and his good luck he tried to see it as positively as possible. So when they finally reached a secluded spot on the way to the chamber, Jim pulled off the road and parked his car in the shade of some rocks. Leaving the car they sat down on some smaller rocks nearby.

”What are we doing here, Jim?” Amy asked curiously. At first she thought that her very own sheriff had pulled over to have his way with her and was looking forward to some good old-fashioned necking. But Jim didn’t move and didn’t talk; he just sat there, frowning over some heavy thoughts that plagued him. After a moment, Amy grew restless and curious, hence the question.

Finally, Jim pulled himself together and asked his lady friend the much dreaded question, “Amy, do you believe in other life forms, like in aliens?”

“Why Jimmy, what brought this on?” Amy wanted to know and coyly added, “Are you, by any chance trying to tell me that you’re one?”

This reaction threw Jim completely off track, and he vaguely wondered what Amy would do if he answered her “no, but your daughter is dating one!” He could just picture Amy’s reaction to that one, volcanic explosion, at the very least.

Standing up, Jim began pacing in front of Amy and she realized that her sheriff tried to broach some very difficult topic. “Hey, Jim, all your pacing is making me all dizzy, so, could you please just stop that and tell me what the heck is going on?” Seeing Jim’s guarded look, Amy insisted, “Jim, sit down and tell me what’s going on. You’re scaring me. Is something wrong with Maria? Is that it? Yes, that’s it, isn’t it? Has she been… umpf...”

Valenti knew he had to stop Amy’s ranting before she became hysterical and he just knew the fasted way to achieve this and kissed her passionately. Loosing his train of thoughts for a moment he let himself enjoy Amy’s kisses, thinking ‘who knows if she’ll ever kiss me again?’

Tearing himself away from temptation, Jim took several deep breaths and tried his hardest to regain his composure. Suddenly he had the answer, knew just what he had to do and asked a confused Amy “I’m sure you have wondered just what Maria and her friends have been up to in the last few years. I mean all these secrets and that sneaking around must’ve worried you?”

Glancing inquiringly at Amy, he waited for her reaction and when she nodded he continued, “OK, Amy, this is very difficult to talk about so I think I’m just going to show you. Do you trust me?” After her second nod Jim asked, “Will you come with me?” Again Amy nodded and so they climbed back into the sheriff’s cruiser and Jim drove them towards the pod-chambers…

Waiting by the Pod-Chamber, 08/12/2000, Saturday 3.00 pm
Riverdog, Eddy and Serena sat on the rocks beside the entrance to the pod-chamber, basking in the warm rays of sunshine. They were comfortably silent and listened to the sounds of nature around them.

After a while they heard a car approach. They weren’t surprised, only curious as they observed the newcomers. The car and the people in it were unknown to them and so they just waited and observed as the people, a middle aged couple, got out of their car. They watched them as the couple stretched and then looked around, and then the woman pointed in their direction.

The three sitting in the sun could tell that the strangers discussed their next actions by the way they gesticulated. After a moment they seemed to come to an agreement and both turned toward the trail, and began their ascent.
*~~*~~*
Riverdog, Eddy and Serena meet Johnny and Kathy, 08/12/2000, Saturday 3.10 pm
Conscious of the intent looks from the three people halfway up the trail, Johnny helped Kathy climb the rocky path.

Panting and sweating Johnny and Kathy reached the three Native Americans and gave them a tentative nod in greeting. Serena and Eddy stood up and offered the newcomers their rocks to sit on, since they were bigger than the other ones lying around. Grateful and still out of breath, Kathy accepted the generous offer and sat down. After a moment Johnny followed his wife’s example and sank on the rock next to hers.

Riverdog sat there in stoic silence while the other four people in the group eyed each other more or less stealthily. Johnny decided enough was enough and introduced himself “My name is Dubois, Johnny Dubois” watching the others for any kind of reaction, when none was forthcoming he added “and I would like to introduce you to my wife Kathy.”

Eddy looked to his mentor for guidance, and when none was given he took matters in his own hands and returned the favor “Hello, nice to meet you. May I introduce you to my mentor Riverdog?” After receiving the shaman’s silent nod of acknowledgement he continued with a proud smile splitting his face “and this here is my lovely wife Serena and I’m Eddy.”

Aware of the old man’s scrutiny Johnny stood up and with a light bow of respect said, “I’m honored to meet you sir.” And then he turned to young couple and greeted them too.

Taking back his seat Johnny asked “Do you, by any chance know why we’re here?” For the first time Riverdog opened his mouth and quietly stated “we wait!”

Cal, 08/12/2000, Saturday 3.25 pm
He hadn’t expected that, people waiting by the pod-chambers! Cal wasn’t sure what to think of that. He recognized Riverdog and his protégé Eddy. The beautiful native woman must be Riverdog’s granddaughter Serena who was also Eddy’s wife, Cal remembered having read something along these lines in one of his reports.

The couple with them was unknown to Cal. They seemed peaceful and since Riverdog, who befriended his king and friends accepted them, Cal decided to give them the benefit of the doubt; otherwise he could still take them out, thanks to his powers.

After reaching the others, Cal calmly introduced himself “Good afternoon, my name is Cal Langley.” After his introduction he looked at Riverdog and was unnerved by the way the old shaman was observing him. He waited for the old man’s reaction and wasn’t disappointed when he received a nod of approval. Now the growing circle sat there, waiting…

Brody Davies and the Kids, 08/12/2000, Saturday 3.40 pm

Carefully, Brody drove his SUV along the old highway, after all, these ‘miracle’ kids were a precious cargo. All the kids and Brody were looking for the place they were going to and all of them were sure that they would recognize it on sight. It was like a contest of ‘who would see it first’. From time to time one of the kids would cry, “I see it, I see it!” only to start laughing hilariously, when everybody looked around, and it would cry even louder “I got you!” But then the moment came and everybody just shut up and stared before they started to chant excitedly “I see it, I see it!”

Brody maneuvered the SUV off the paved road onto a dirt one and everybody was glad to wear their seatbelts, because of the rough ground they were on.

After a short drive they found a spot at the bottom of the rock formation and were surprised to find three cars already parked there. Eagerly the kids tore off their seatbelts and Brody had to stop them from carelessly running out of the car. He wanted to check out the surroundings first, see who else was here. As he was leaving the car he carefully looked around, searching for anything suspicious. A moment later he saw the people halfway up the rocky trail and scrutinized them thoroughly. Seeing a middle-aged couple, three Native Americans and another middle aged man sitting together peacefully he deemed them harmless and motioned for the kids to join him.

Amongst a lot of giggling and pushing the kids exited the vehicle and walked up to Brody. Together, the six of them climbed the rough path up the formation and joined the others up there…

Sidney, with her father and her friends around herself, felt very adventurous and approached Riverdog. She asked him “Are you waiting too?”

A worried Jim and a curious Amy, 08/12/2000, Saturday 3.45 pm
Jim was glad he could hide behind his Stetson and his sunshades, there was no need let Amy know just how worried he was. At the moment he had no idea about how to spring the ‘alien amongst us-news’ to his girlfriend. He could hear her talking nonstop, asking questions, demanding answers but at least Amy hadn’t resorted to throwing threats in his direction, yet. As he was driving along the old highway, Jim felt such calmness come over him, that he knew in his gut that he was right to bring Amy here. The closer he came to the rock-formation, the stronger his conviction grew and the better he felt.

When Jim swerved off the paved highway and onto the rough dirt trail, Amy started to demand that he stop “Jim, what in the world are you doing? Why are you driving on this dirt track? Where are you taking me?” and as Jim didn’t answer she became more volatile and yelled “Jim, Jim Valenti, stop right now! I want answers and I want them now!” When this didn’t bring forth the reaction Amy was hoping for, she grabbed her purse and hectically rummaged through it, only to cry triumphantly “gotcha” when she pulled her hand back out, holding the little bottle with her life saver drops, the cedar oil!

Between sniffing on her oil and shooting death glares at Jim, Amy managed to calm down considerably and with a deep, heartfelt sigh she put the little vial back into her purse.

After a short drive on the dirt road they found four cars parked at the foot of the rock-formation. This confused Amy, since she hadn’t expected anybody else. But Jim took this calmly, after all, he was quite an old hand in the ‘Alien-Business’ and nothing could throw him easily off track.

Amy had a hard time to formulate any sentence that consisted of more than few words, and so she stopped trying and stuttered “Jim did you…? I mean, why are they here? Who are they? Do you know them?”

Valenti waited patiently for the next time Amy needed to stop to take a breath and then quickly interrupted “No, I didn’t know they would be here, and no I don’t know why they’re here, and yes I recognize some of them.”

After taking a closer look at all the people halfway up the rock-formation he added quite surprised “Well, well, well, look at that! Unless I’m greatly mistaken we have Johnny and Kathy Dubois up there.” Seeing Amy’s inquiring look he explained “Nancy Parker’s brother and his wife.” His gaze returned up the path and he kept identifying the others “Well, Brody Davies is there, with a bunch of kids. And, is that Riverdog? Wow! Riverdog, then this is going to be one heck of a meeting.”

Looking again at his sweetheart he mysteriously added, “I guess the time has come, everything will be revealed!” Continuing on a whisper he stated, “The others will be here soon too. Yeah, I guess the time of revelations has finally come!”

Valenti grabbed Amy’s hand and carefully guided her up the rocky path to meet the others…

Moira, vile dank für dine tolle job, s'macht spass mit dier z'schaffe!!

35, The time has come, 08/12/2000, Saturday afternoon
“Now, we have to go now!” Liz’s short statement elicited first a shocked silence, but after a moment the three sets of parents seemed to find their voices and they spoke all at once “What do you mean, now?” “Leave? Where too?” Why now, and anyway, go where?” “We can’t just go, can we?” Liz just stood there and waited until the parents had calmed down and then informed them, “the Granolith called, we have to leave in a few minutes!”

As one, all the parents turned towards Michael, expecting the alien to explode or at the very least put up a fuss, but to their surprise he calmly supported Liz and said, “maybe we should bring some water and a bowl along, you know, for the cleansing ceremony?” and after a moment’s thought he added, “and maybe some blankets for the little one” turning to Liz he asked “what do think, Liz?”

Smiling her appreciation for his support and calm acceptance of the situation, Liz answered Michael seriously “that’s a good idea Michael, and then everybody should use the restrooms before we leave!”

”Where to? You still haven’t told us where this Grano… thing is, or even what it is? And what cleansing ceremony are you talking about? And anyway, why would we need one?” Charles Whitman asked curiously. If there had ever been any doubt about who Alex’s father was; now everybody knew without a doubt that Alex was indeed his father’s son, for no one could ask questions like the two Whitman men!

“Oh, sorry, we forgot you don’t know the latest developments yet,” seeing that Liz had that faraway look again, that indicated that her thoughts were otherwise occupied, Isabelle had stepped in and answered. After seeing the inquiring looks on the parental units, she added, “we’re going to the Granolith Chamber and, since Tess and Nacedo were in there before, we have to somehow clean out their negative energies.”

At hearing Tess’ name Philip winced, remembering how he’d defended and praised her and he scornfully mumbled, “Tess, right!” and louder he asked, “do we have to bring anything else?”

Coming out of her ‘Granolith connection’ Liz replied “no, Philip, all we have to do is go there, everything else will somehow be taken care of!”
*~~*~~*
On the way…
They were all ready in record time, after all there were three restrooms to choose from, one upstairs, one downstairs and one in the parents’ bathroom. Meanwhile, Isabelle and Michael had organized some bottles of mineral-water (of course pure, without the fuzz!) and Izzy also grabbed one of her mom’s porcelain bowls, they all moved outside and climbed into the three cars they had decided to use. After all, they were all going to same place, there was no need to bring all the vehicles.

Leading the convoy was Isabelle in her family’s SUV, she had her parents and the Whitmans on board. In the next car were the Parkers. Maria, Michael and Kyle in the old DeLuca Jetta, brought up the rear. The tension in the three cars was high, because at this moment, nobody really knew what to expect.
*~~*~~*
In the Evans’ SUV…
Isabelle tried to stay as calm as possible, but adding to her own nervousness, she could feel the anxiety of the others in the car. As she drove out of Roswell, towards the old highway, she explained, “mom, dad, you can’t imagine just how long I have wanted to tell you everything, but to be honest, I was just as afraid of your reaction as were Max and Michael. But as long as I knew they were against us telling you the truth, it was easy for me to insist on doing it.” Sadly smiling she added, “you know, right now a lifelong dream has come true, and strangely enough, I’m feeling very confused. I don’t know if I should laugh or cry, crazy, isn’t it?”
*~~*~~*
Her dad, who was riding shotgun, wasn’t really paying too much attention to his daughter’s ramblings, but kept his eyes wide open, watching every movement along the road. He wasn’t quite sure what to expect, but after all the stories he had heard during the last hours, he wouldn’t have been surprised to have some evil aliens jump out of nowhere and attack them with laser guns. Actually, he was very astonished about his extremely creative imagination, because usually he needed hard facts to analyze everything. But right now, his imagination was working overtime, hence, his attention wasn’t really on his daughter’s explanations. Worriedly Phil asked, “where are we going? When will be there?” only to exclaim, “hey, I know this road! Diane, do you remember this road?”
*~~*~~*
Diane, whose attention was divided between her daughter’s rambling, her husband’s monolog, the Whitmans whisperings and the strangely familiar road they were traveling, was overwhelmed by all this and almost missed Phil’s exclamation. But she had heard it, and that made her watch more closely where they were going and suddenly she cried excitedly “on this road we found Max and Isabelle, remember? Just a few miles up ahead, that’s were the two of them were wandering all alone and in the dark! Poor things, they were so afraid!”
*~~*~~*
The Whitmans were mostly quiet, only a few whispers could be heard from time to time. Nervously they observed where they were going, and realized that they were on the old highway. They remembered the stories that had gone around Roswell, back in 89, after two kids had been found, wandering in the dark, naked and all alone. The rumors and speculations had run wild, some had even whispered about alien involvement. Well, now they had the answers, didn’t they!
*~~*~~*~~*~~*~~*~~*
In the Parkers’ car…
Jeff was behind the wheel and Nancy was right beside him. He liked the way that felt, Nancy beside him, that was just as it should be! In good times and in bad times, except right now he wasn’t too sure what kind of times they had, but he was willing to stay as open-minded as possible, even though that proved to be more difficult than anticipated.

He had to concentrate on the Evans’ SUV, since he didn’t want to loose them. Sure, Liz knew the way, but she was dozing in the backseat. But when he thought about it, he felt safer with everybody close by. “Where the heck is that girl driving to? Does she even know where she is going?” Jeff realized that he was asking stupid questions, but he was just too damned nervous to care!
*~~*~~*
Amazingly enough Nancy stayed quite relaxed. She just observed everything around them and kept glancing towards the backseat, to assure herself that Liz was alright. She felt oddly convinced that everything would turn out just right. This attitude let her actually enjoy this crazy adventure and she loved it!
*~~*~~*~~*~~*~~*~~*
In the Jetta…
The tension in the small car was heavy. Maria was mumbling nonstop under her breath. “Tess Harding, you’re lucky to be on another planet, otherwise I’d take you down myself!” Luckily Maria already knew the way to the pod-chamber, because she had already lost Isabelle and the Parkers. Her ramblings became more confusing “Mess with my head, would you, huh, yeah, I bet you really enjoyed that too!” more worried she added “I just hope she didn’t leave any permanent damage, I’m already kooky enough as it is!”
*~~*~~*
Michael sat beside her and tried to stay as calm as possible, but the moment of truth seemed to have come and he wasn’t sure if he was ready for it. He was just real glad that he’d found out about Tess’ machinations now instead of later. This way, the whole group was working together again, and if felt damned good! What would happen after the big crisis had passed remained to be seen, but Michael felt confident enough that they would solve all the problems that could arise and come out stronger than ever.
*~~*~~*
Kyle was sprawled across the backseat, using this relatively quiet moment to have some words with Buddha. He needed to be sure that his holiness was aware of the importance of the things that were about to go down. While he was lost in thought, Kyle suddenly realized that now as Liz’s second, he might have more responsibility heaped on him and his prayers intensified, “Oh Buddha, guide me through the coming meeting, give me wisdom and strength and enlightenment, to do what’s right and let me stay strong and true. Help us bring baby Zander home and let us all do right by him. And please, please Buddha, bring Max home in one piece, otherwise Liz is going to skin me alive and that won’t be pretty!”

After a moment’s thought Kyle added, “Buddha, thank you for clearing things for Michael and us. It’s good to have him back. Do you think I should apologize to him? Maybe afterwards, maybe I’ll just see what happens and decide then.”

and here is the next part...

Commotions…
As expected the Evans’ SUV was the first one to arrive, closely followed by the Parkers. From quite far away Isabelle could already see a bunch of cars on ‘their’ parking spot. ‘What the heck are those cars doing here?’ she asked herself at the unexpected sight and completely forgot to wonder about the red Jetta’s whereabouts.

She stopped her car a safe distance away, after all, you never knew. As it was, the alien girl waited until Jeff had brought his car to stop right beside them, before exiting the relative safety of it. The two sets of parents stayed in the SUV, well aware of the fact that Izzy was worried about something, quite probably the cars in front of them.

Liz asked her parents to wait in their vehicle, stating “I have to talk with Izzy about something. As soon as we’re ready I’ll give you a call! Ok?” Reluctantly the Parkers staid put, but watched everything as closely as possible.

Nervously Isabelle approached Liz and wanted to know, “do you know whose cars those are? And what are they doing here?” Before Liz could reply, the red Jetta sped up and stopped in a cloud of dust, only barely missing the two girls standing there. Michael was the first one out, closely followed by Kyle, and as soon as Maria had killed the engine and removed the key, she joined the others.

Michael’s protective instincts kicked in full force and he stood in front of all the girls, but shielding mostly Liz, his queen. Kyle positioned himself right beside the tall alien, and together, they presented an almost insurmountable wall against any attacker.

When the two men were sure that the women were well protected, they carefully watched their surroundings for any danger. Sounding surprisingly calm, Michael asked, “I’d like to know how you two” while agitatedly pointing at Isabelle and Liz “could be idiotic enough to leave the relative safety of your cars and stand right here in the open, like sitting ducks, waiting to be attacked?” “Yeah, what he said…!” Kyle added worriedly. Between sniffing her cedar oil and trying to calm her breathing Maria cried, “they’re right, you know, they are!”

As everything stayed calm the parents left the cars and joined the kids. Charles asked “What are we doing here?” “Waiting to be attacked?” Jeff ironically put in, while Philip, who was still watching every movement around, had spotted a familiar car. He pointed to their right and informed the others “Kyle, isn’t that your dad’s car, over there?”

After that, everybody took a closer look around and Maria recognized Brody’s SUV. Nancy thought she recognized her brother’s car, but wasn’t quite sure of it. This still left the old battered truck, and the rental car that nobody seemed to know.
*~~*~~*
”Wait here, and Kyle…” before Michael could finish his order Kyle nodded and said, “We’ll be fine, just go!” Thus assured, Michael walked the short distance to the bottom of the steep trail and looked up, towards the pod chamber. He wasn’t quite sure what he saw, but he was convinced that there was no danger waiting for them. He called the other teens and informed them, “it’s OK, we can go up. The sheriff and some people are already waiting by the chamber!”

Izzi’s “oh my god, what’s going on” was accompanied by Maria’s “is my mom there? You know with the sheriff?” Liz just nodded at her, somehow this didn’t surprise her at all. And Kyle remembered “we have to get the water, you know, for the ceremony?” “Kyle’s right!” Michael agreed and led the group back to the cars, where their parents shot off question after question, “what’s going on?” “who’s here?” “where are they?” “what do we do now?”

Feeling strong, calm and sure of his next actions, Michael suddenly knew, the second in command was growing stronger and started to become a part of him. With a newly-found confidence he calmed everybody, saying “everything is fine. The sheriff is waiting for us. He has some people with him.” After quickly clapping his hands he ordered “let’s grab the water, the bowl and the blankets and then let’s go!”

When they reached the bottom of the rocky trail, Diane was the first one to notice one of the women of the waiting group behave quite oddly, and cried “look!” pointing upwards. Everybody’s eyes followed Diane’s finger and they were surprised to find Jim and Amy standing in the middle of a bunch of people, of which some were known to some in the group and some weren’t. Even stranger was that Jim was quietly motioning the new comers at bottom of the trail to come on up, while Amy was trying to convoy the same message by flailing her arm wildly and yelling something unintelligibly at the top of her lungs.

Figuring that Maria and Kyle were the ones to ask, Isabelle turned to them “what do you think, are they our people, or are they shape shifters?”

Kyle thoughtfully stared up the trail and studied his ’dad’ carefully, and after a moment he answered “could be, looks like him, behaves like him, it’s probably him, but with all the crazy stuff going on lately, I’m not absolutely sure!”

After hearing that, everybody turned expectantly towards Maria, waiting for her verdict. Throwing one last embarrassed look up the trail she said with utter conviction “That’s my mom, because only my mom can behave THAT way!”

Trusting Maria’s verdict a relieved group started the trek up the rocky old trail to join the ones waiting…
*~~*~~*
Meeting and Greeting and more questions, 08/12/2000, Saturday 4 pm
Halfway up the trail, Liz recognized Riverdog and completely zoned in on him. Unconsciously she started to pick up speed, at least as much as she could on all those rocks, and soon left all, except Michael and Kyle behind. Her attention was so fixed on the old shaman that she didn’t hear her companions’ words of caution.

She didn’t hear her favorite uncle’s joyful exclamation “Liz, sweetheart!” or see his outstretched arms, ready to happily embrace his niece, no, she walked right by him and threw herself into Riverdog’s surprised arms. For a moment longer she clung to him, before reluctantly removing her arms and abashedly said, “Sorry, Riverdog, I was just so glad to see you!” “No need to be sorry, little one!” a visibly moved Riverdog replied.

By now the rest of the group had arrived and Nancy and Jeff were busily checking out the old shaman. They most definitely didn’t know him and now were very curious to hear just how Liz had ever met him. But before they could approach their daughter about that, they were called by a very surprised Johnny and Kathy! And that was only the beginning of it, because very quickly, this impromptu meeting deteriorated to complete mayhem.

Brody, only too happy to see a familiar face, (and what a face it was! After all, he’d been crushing over Maria from the first moment he’d met her, and from the second moment on he’d known it was useless, but, he could dream, couldn’t he?) immediately attached himself to her. He ignored the angry looks from a certain tall and YOUNG man and just asked question after question, not really giving Maria any time to answer.

Amy had attached herself to Maria’s other side, and she too asked question after question, without taking any breathing space in between. Maria being Maria started to hyperventilate and grabbed her lifesaver and sniffed on her cedar oil. This action seemed to be contagious, because Amy was next. She grabbed her daughter’s hand with the little flask and held it under her nose. Thus the two DeLuca women shared Maria’s cedar oil, and both calmed down considerably. This left Brody Davies to stare at the two of them, wondering just what the heck had happened.
*~~*~~*
Cal Langley, was the only one whom nobody knew. Some had heard of him, but none had met him. This gave him the time to observe this group. He studied them carefully. They were a fascinatingly mixed group of people. He knew that a few of them didn’t know all the others, and so they warily studied them, trying to determine if they were friend or foe.

Indeed, this was a strange mix of people: Philip Evans, attorney and his wife Diane, a devoted mom who helped at the Evans’ law firm.

Jeff Parker, owner of a crazy diner and his wife Nancy, who not only was a devoted mom but also a shrewd businesswoman and as it turned out a rebellious wife.

Then there was Charles Whitman, a genius in all things to do with computer technology and his wife Claire, who had also been a very devoted mom, until her son was taken from them, now it seemed that Charles and Claire were lost and were looking for a new reason for living.

And let’s not forget Jim Valenti and Amy DeLuca. Both were devoted parents, both were single and seemed to have found new love with each other. All these couples were connected through their children.

Then there was Riverdog, an old shaman, his granddaughter Serena and her husband Eddy. Cal knew the kids had had some contact with them, but wasn’t quite sure why. Whatever it was, they must be important, otherwise they wouldn’t be here.

Then there was this crazy English bloke with all these kids. Cal knew that Max had worked at the UFO museum, and also that Brody Davies had bought it. Of course he was acquainted with all the rumors of Brody’s alien abduction, heck all of Roswell knew that. He also knew that Brody’s kid had been one of those that had been miraculously healed last Christmas. What Cal couldn’t figure out was, why were they here? Who had called them?

And then of course there was Nancy Parker’s brother with his wife. Hmm, Johnny D. and his wife Kathy. Langley was baffled, why were the Dubois’ here? Other than their relationship to the Parkers he couldn’t see any reason for them to be a part of what ever was coming. He knew that both of them were honest and upstanding citizens, after all he had them checked out thoroughly, but what had a ‘soldier/FBI-man/security-nut’ and his wife who taught manners and gave parties, lost among these people? At any other time Cal would have loved a good riddle, but right now was not the time for it, right now he needed facts!

As he observed the crazy flurry of excitement, the shape shifter noted that only Riverdog with Liz by his side and Eddy and Serena were quiet, everybody else was hectically trying to find out what was going on; talking and not listening. He wasn’t sure if he should intervene, stop this craziness, but somebody was faster than him.

A shrill whistle could be heard and everybody stopped dead in their tracks. Confused they looked around, to find out just who had disturbed them in their important tasks, and found the sheriff standing on a rock, overlooking the group. He calmly raised his hands and spoke just loud enough to be heard by one and all “hi, everybody, could we just calm down a little? All this excitement just adds to the confusion.”

Looking at all the faces in front of him Jim added, “Now, I don’t know about you all, but I guess you all are here for a reason.” Seeing everybody’s nods, he went on, “Alright, since I know why some of us are here, I’d like to know why the others turned up. So, why don’t we begin with Johnny here, next Brody Davies and you sir…” Jim nodded Cal’s way and waited for an answer. After he received a nod as a reply, the sheriff turned to the shaman and respectfully added “and if it’s alright with you, sir, I would like you to state your reasons last.” Riverdog acknowledged this request with a regal nod.

and the last one...

Johnny Dubois
Johnny was a bit embarrassed, because truth be told, he couldn’t really give a reasonable explanation for his actions since Nancy’s call. But right now he had no option but to bite the bullet and he began his strange tale and hoped the others wouldn’t have him committed “Well, Friday afternoon my sister Nancy called and asked for a favor. She said she’d call again to let me know the best time for us to come and visit. Afterwards I went in search of my wife, when she suddenly came running and said ‘we should visit Roswell again’. I told her about Nancy’s call, and than we suddenly felt it very important to just come to Roswell. We made all the arrangements and left.”

Right now Johnny wished he’d never learned how to read people’s facial expressions, because he felt more embarrassed the longer he talked. This Cal guy seemed to somehow enjoy himself at his expense. The last ones to arrive looked very wary, the English guy seemed confused and this Riverdog man didn’t show any emotions at all.

Knowing that the story got even crazier Johnny picked the telling up again, avoiding direct eye contact to all, “Anyway, we left yesterday afternoon and drove to Dexter where we spent the night. Late this morning, as we drove towards Roswell, I felt a very distinctive urge, to take another route, so we changed to this old highway. The closer we came to this place, the stronger this urge, or maybe you could say this ‘call’ became. It grew really strong about a mile back, actually, it became impossible to ignore, so we drove here, where Riverdog, Eddy and Serena were already waiting.” Defensively Johnny added “That’s it, that’s how we got here!”
*~~*~~*
Brody Davies
Avidly, Brody had listened to Johnny’s explanation, and he was very thankful that he was second in line, because now, his crazy story didn’t sound so bad anymore.

Slowly he began his narration “I don’t know if you all know about the miracle healing of my daughter and her little friends here. Anyway, it happened last Christmas. After that everything was crazy, you know, reporters and crazy people, wanting to know exactly what had happened. Finally, when things calmed down I decided to bring all the kids together, but I had more fall time in mind. About a week ago I suddenly thought, why wait, so I invited the kids to come sooner, like now.”

Proudly smiling at Sidney and her friends he continued, “We were all having a ball, these kids are great. Anyway, today we were at the UFO-museum, when suddenly all of us felt we had to come here. So, here we are, but we have no idea why!”
*~~*~~*
Cal Langley
Cal had been listening intently and now things started to become clear to him. He just didn’t know how to explain this to the others, some would understand, some might and some most definitely wouldn’t, but he was certain, the Granolith had called them all!

Deciding to throw in his fame as a distraction, Cal introduced himself “I realize that none of you know me, though some might’ve heard my name. I’m Cal Langley, Movie Producer from Hollywood!” Glad his ruse worked he let the others’ excitement take the floor. It never ceased to amaze him, how upstanding people could be impressed and fascinated with his status. ‘Of course, it was my reason too, when I chose to travel this road’ he added for himself.

Seeing all the different reactions to his revelation was an eye-opener for him too. Of course there were the women of the group, who all had read the yellow press at one point or another and seen his name there, maybe even his picture. Then there was Phil, who as an attorney must’ve been wondering what a Hollywood Producer was doing here, in the middle of nowhere.

Jeff seemed to have known his name before too, probably read it in one of those magazines that his diner provided for his guests. After all, Jeff had to cater to all tastes, in food as in reading material.

Johnny D. Well there was a guy that was hard to read, but Cal could tell that he wasn’t impressed just by the name and fame that was his.

Those Native Americans, well, the young man and woman just sat, smiling at the commotion his revelation had brought forth, but the old one didn’t change his demeanor at all until he saw the sheriff’s and the kids’ reaction, then Riverdog became more watchful.

The sheriff and the kids turned shocked faces towards Cal, and too late he realized his mistake. Of course the king had told them all about his experience at Cal’s hands. No wonder they became guarded
*~~*~~*
Riverdog
After carefully scrutinizing this Langley man and reassuring himself that, for the moment at least, he represented no danger, Riverdog addressed the others calmly with a few well chosen words, “In my childhood I met a traveler and I was honored to help him. After many moons had passed, and this traveler and I had become friends of sorts, he was able to trust me with his biggest secret. He asked me to protect something and wait for the chosen one to come.”

”Almost forty years passed, and I despaired of ever meeting this chosen one. Also, I was growing old and worried, if I would be able to carry out my promise. That’s when I started to search for a trustworthy successor, not just as shaman, but also to carry out my promise if needed.”

Nodding at Eddy the old man continued, “after a long Vision quest I found Eddy and he was willing to carry on with my legacy. That’s why he is here today, as my successor.”

Proudly smiling at his granddaughter he added, “Serena, daughter of my daughter, is known for her visions and her sixth sense.”

”As it was, two nights ago, the three of us received the same vision, preparing us for things to come. And today, we received the call. We don’t know why we’re invited, but we do know that it has to do with the young ones and that it’s important for us to be here. So, here we are!”
*~~*~~*
Sheriff Valenti
Nervously Jim stepped from one foot to the other; he couldn’t quite face his friends. Amy’s curious but otherwise calm demeanor, coupled with Jim’s elusive behavior, let everybody who was ‘in the know’ realized that Ms Hurricane DeLuca was far too quiet to have learned anything about the alien secret. By now, it was clear to Jim that he had to come up with some sort of explanation, and he tried his best, “Well, I’ve been involved with these great kids for a while now, and can assure you, that nothing is as it used to be!”

Valenti could hear a few murmured comments like Jeff’s “Really? I wouldn’t have guessed it!” Phil’s “You don’t say!” or Maria’s “at least it hasn’t been boring!” and Kyle added “I should’ve bought stock in Tabasco sauce, cedar oil and incense!”

Ignoring the comments Jim bravely bumbled along and stuttered, “yeah, well, anyway, as I said, we’re all here because we have to be here. Oh, and, emm, I brought Amy DeLuca along. Sooo…” unsure on how to proceed Valenti turned to Michael and Isabelle, looking for help.
*~~*~~*
Michael
Hearing Valenti failing so miserably, Michael realized that the time had come for him to say something. The trouble was that he knew his limitations, and Michael Guerin, the kid from the trailer park, just wasn’t cut out to do any talking. He was a man of action, not blabbing, that was Max’s job. He was quite sure that seconds didn’t need to hold speeches. Unsure on how to go on, Michael slouched down, trying to disappear. Seeing Michael’s discomfort Liz telepathed “Michael, stand up straight, be proud of who you are and where you come from.”

Shocked Michael glanced Liz’s way. When he realized that she was serious, he answered with a small smile and a slight nod. Standing as tall as he could, Michael proudly faced the newcomers, and was surprised to find first Isabelle, then Maria and then the whole gang, including Jim Valenti, joining him, and giving their support.

After a moment’s hesitation Michael began, “alright, most of you know me, but what some of you don’t know is, I’m not really from around here, in fact, only half of me is from around here.” Seeing the confused looks he received Michael decided to go directly to the heart of the matter and taking a deep breath, stated, “I’m a human/alien hybrid.” Here he stopped, because Isabelle surprised him by taking his hand and inserting “WE, Michael, WE are human/alien hybrids, you, Max and I, and don’t you forget it!”

Since Riverdog had already known this fact, he stayed calm. Eddy and Serena had been prepared for this by their visions, but to hear it loud and clear was something else again. They were mildly surprised. Kathy Dubois was shocked and her husband Johnny gleefully exclaimed “I knew it, I knew it!” After he found everybody staring at him Johnny mollified “Well, of course I didn’t know THIS, but I knew something was up, I did!”

The parents, of course, had had enough time to get somewhat used to the idea of the aliens, except for Amy. For the very first time in a very, very long while she was rendered speechless!
*~~*~~*
Cal Langley
The way the kids suddenly rallied behind Michael impressed Cal. That was when he figured it was about time for him to improve their impression of him. Cal decided that everybody was here because of the Granolith and that by now, almost everybody present knew about the aliens. Now seemed as good a time as any to reveal his own origin and thus maybe take some of the heat from his charges.

Moving into the centre of the crowed Cal turned to Michael and said, “I know you have no reason to trust me, especially when you know my treatment of the king, when all he needed was help” Seeing the stony faces of his charges Cal decided to gravel and pleaded, “please, trust me this one time, I’ve learned from my mistake!” Langley stood there, waiting for any kind of answer and noticed the way Michael made eye contact with all his friends. When Michael was happy with the reactions of the others, he gave Cal a nod of approval and waited.

The message Michael conveyed with his curt nod was clear, “don’t mess up, or you’ll have us to deal with!” Langley answered with a nod of his own and then turned towards the waiting audience.

Used to having people’s attention Langley expected the same here and began decisively, “What I said when I introduced myself before is the truth, just not the whole truth. Yes, I am Cal Langley, Movie Producer from Hollywood but more importantly, I’m a purebred alien from a planet called Antar.”

Seeing the shocked expression on most of the faces, Cal waited a moment to continue to give everybody a chance to calm down. “It’s true and of course I can prove everything, but not out here in the open. We do have to be careful, you know.” Realising that some of the people knew exactly what he was talking about, Cal nodded and continued, “Ok, on Antar I was a high ranking member of the Royal Guards. In fact, Michael here, was my boss. He was the first general of the Royal Army and the Royal Guards and the king’s second in command.” This bit of information elicited a lot of excitement and Cal had to raise his voice to be heard “Since you all have been called to this place at this time, I assume you already know all this or you’re supposed to know it all. So, without further delay, I say we adjourn this meeting into the chamber.” And looking at Michael he asked “General, do you agree?”

As before Michael looked at all his friends, gave a curt nod, turned around and waved is hand over the rock in front of him. When a beautiful, silvery handprint appeared on the rock, everybody uuhh’d and aahhh’d about the mystery of it.

After Michael placed his hand on the handprint, everybody felt the ground shake and rumble, heard the grumbling of the big rock that moved to open up an entrance into the cave behind it…

36, Meet the Granolith, 08/12/2000, Saturday afternoon
The pod chamber, 08/12/2000, Saturday 4.45 pm…

Unsure of what to do next, the parents stood in front of the cave and cautiously peered inside. Isabelle grabbed her parents’ hands and pleadingly encouraged them, “mom, dad, this is where we hatched! Please, don’t be afraid and let me show you our pods!” Unable to resist their daughter’s plea, the Evans’ were the first ones to enter behind Isabelle. Then followed the Parkers, the Whitmans and the sheriff with an unusually quiet Amy were the last parents to enter the cave.

Since Maria didn’t really trust her mom’s calmness, she decided to stick close to her, just in case, and she snuck inside ahead of the other newcomers. And while Isabelle was too preoccupied with her parents, Maria just kept an eye on everybody else, especially her mom, who normally was given to overreacting in any kind of stressful moments. ‘...And if this isn’t a stressful moment, I most definitely don’t know what it is!’ Maria mumbled under her breath, bringing the little bottle to her nose to sniff on.

Whatever the parents had imagined when they were told about the pods and the chamber wasn’t close to what met their eyes. In the dim light of the cave they saw these strange things by the wall and they most definitely didn’t look anything like the incubators that were commonly used in the hospitals. Those things appeared very archaic, like from the Stone Age with a futuristic twist.
*~~*~~*
Brody tried very hard to hold the kids back until it was their turn to enter, but he was outmaneuvered by them, and the children entered the cave very enthusiastically. To them, this whole experience was a great adventure. They didn’t realize just what a special moment this was. They just became privy to one of the biggest secrets on earth, and all they wanted to do was explore and have fun.

Following the kids, Brody forgot all about keeping an eye on them, when he saw the four pods on the far wall of the cave. Finally he felt vindicated for all the wrongs, all the pain he’d had to suffer over the past years. He’d been ridiculed and lost his wife and his partnership in the computer business, because they all thought he’d lost his marbles.

But here and now, Brody knew, that everything had been worth it. Aliens had healed his daughter and even himself, and now they were about to learn the truth and reason behind it all. Finally Brody Davies was at peace…
*~~*~~*
When Johnny was growing up, his very strict and snobby parents and the nannies that had passed through their family, had taught him not to swear and cuss. Washing his mouth with soap had been one of the milder punishments he remembered. And until now, he’d always adhered to those teachings. Also, his wife, with a similar background as his, wouldn’t have stood for any cussing on his part. She was very articulate and could let you know exactly what she thought, in very resourceful ways without falling back on foul language.

Bus as Johnny Dubois entered the cave with his wife right beside him, he was so shocked he forgot all about those lessons and swore up a storm, “holy shit, what the fuck is this?” His wife understood exactly what had prompted this reaction, but with giving his hand a strong squeeze she let him know that that was as much cussing as she would let him get away with. He glanced at Kathy and all he could do was shake his head, utterly flabbergasted by what was going on.
*~~*~~*
Eddy and Serena were next to enter the cave, and both of them were disappointed, they had been so sure that they would see that cone like thing from their visions. But curiosity won and the two of them joined everybody else by the pods.

Riverdog entered after them. He was the only one, besides the teens, the sheriff and Cal, to really appreciate the profoundness of this moment. He stopped a few feet behind everybody else, closed his eyes and let the cave tell him all he needed to know.
*~~*~~*
Michael, Liz and Cal brought up the rear, keeping careful watch, just in case somebody lost it. After all, one never knew!
*~~*~~*
When finally all the excitement died down, Michael and Isabelle were able to tell everybody all about the day they had hatched, left the cave and Max and Isabelle had been found by the Evans’ and Michael by a farmer who handed him over to child services.

Suddenly a great tranquility settled over the whole group. Even the children felt it. Everybody knew they all were here for a reason, and that THE TIME had finally come.
*~~*~~*~~*~~*~~*~~*
With a frown Michael and Isabelle looked towards Liz. They could feel that something had to be done, but didn’t know what. They found Liz standing close to Riverdog, both had their eyes closed, and both exuded great peace. Impatiently Michael and Izzi waited for the two of them to come out of their connection.

They didn’t have to wait long. Riverdog and Liz opened their eyes at the same time and smiled at each other. Reverently deferring to Liz the old shaman said “little one, it’s your turn” and giving her a slight nod of respect he stepped back.

With a nod of her own Liz accepted the lead and calmly answered “thank you Riverdog.” Then she turned to the others and informed them “the Granolith let me know that the time has come. The first one to enter will be Riverdog, and then Michael, Izzi and I will follow. Everybody else can come in after us, any which way you’re comfortable with.”

Looking at Michael, Liz explained, “Riverdog has to be first because he is needed to cleanse the chamber from the bad vibes Nacedo and Tess left!” Accepting this explanation the king’s second nodded and motioning to Isabelle and Liz he guided them to stand behind the great shaman.
*~~*~~*
Meet the Granolith, 08/12/2000, Saturday 5.15 pm…
Riverdog led the way into the Chamber of the Granolith. He was followed by Liz who was flanked by Michael on her right side and Isabelle on her left. Next in line was Maria between the Valenti men. The parents followed with Cal by Amy’s side. Brody guided the young brood and, as he wanted to admonish them to conduct themselves, he noticed that all the children seemed to sense the importance of this moment and were already on their best behavior. Johnny, Kathy, Eddy and Serena brought up the end.

Immediately after entering the Granolith Chamber all the new members of the ‘IKAAC’ stopped for a moment to stare openmouthed at cone shaped thing, unsure of what to think of it, then they automatically moved into their places behind and beside the original club members and the shaman.
*~~*~~*
The Cleansing…
Standing a few feet in front of everybody else the old man stopped and reverently bowed before the greatest power of energy he had ever felt in his long life. He recognized the essence of the Granolith, recognized that it wasn’t a deity or a holy relict, but the greatest amount of collected energy, knowledge and power. By bowing before it, the shaman acknowledged and showed his respect to the greatest gift ever given to the people (of whatever planet) by one the greatest creators in the universe.
*~~*~~*
Kneeling down by the wall, Riverdog opened his medicine pouch, picked out a small, square piece of deerskin and placed it on the ground. Next he brought out four stones that the ‘visitor’ from his childhood had given him, cautioning him to guard those stones with his life and never to tell anybody about them. When the time was right, the visitor said, Riverdog would know what to do with them. And now that time had come. Then he picked out some herbs and put them beside the stones, and last, the shaman brought into view a small bundle of dried sage and put it besides the other items.

Then Riverdog arranged all the things in a specific way. The stones were placed one on each side of the deerskin, presenting North, South, East and West. Next he put the sage and the herbs in their allotted places. Then he searched his shirt pockets until he found the matches he needed to light the sage and placed it too on the deerskin.

When everything was to his liking, Riverdog looked towards Michael and said, “Now I need the water and the bowl.” Not surprised that the old man knew that they had brought those things along, Michael handed the requested items to Riverdog and then stepped back into his place. Very interested he followed the shaman’s every move.

Riverdog poured some of the water into the bowl and placed it into the middle of his little altar.
*~~*~~*
The old man turned around and faced the others, and then he asked them to spread out along the wall. He needed more space for his ritual. After everybody had moved to his satisfaction, the old shaman turned back to his small altar and closed his eyes to collect his thought and concentrate on his next actions.

Moments later, when he felt ready, Riverdog began to chant. Next he opened his eyes again, picked up the bowl with the water and after offering it to the Great Spirit drank three sips from it. Carefully he put the bowl back on the deerskin and picked up the small bundle of sage. After lighting it with a match, the shaman waited until the small fire had died and the sage only smoked. Groaning and chanting, he clumsily stood up and after raising his voice the old man started to move around the Granolith, waving the smoking sage bundle in the air.

Four times he interrupted his dance around the cone, each time to pay his respect to another point of the compass. He repeated these rounds two more times. After Riverdog was satisfied with the results he turned to the people in the chamber.

First Riverdog separated Liz from the others, and then he fanned the smoky sage bundle through her aura. He stood in front of her and waved it from the top of her head down to her feet and back up again and repeated this procedure on her back, then her left side and ended on her right side. Through it all, Liz stood still with her eyes closed and her mind blank, letting the shaman’s magic work on her. She could feel how peace and harmony seeped into her and spread throughout her body.

When Riverdog was done, he bowed before Liz and went to single out Michael for the same procedure. After Michael, he cleansed Isabelle, then turned to Maria, Kyle and Jim Valenti, and with a dreamlike certitude the old shaman picked Brody and Amy out of the group, and repeated the cleansing ritual. And when the old man treated the remaining people to a group cleansing, it was clear to the original members that Riverdog had singled out everybody that had ever been mindwarped.

Quietly, as not to disturb the still ongoing ritual, Michael asked “how does he know who’s been warped?” Perplexed everybody just looked at each other until Liz finally answered, “I don’t know, he just does! I guess being a shaman helps!” They all accepted her explanation; after all, they all had seen stranger things than that!

Finally Riverdog was satisfied with the cleansing and in some strange way, they all felt lighter and more carefree than before. The shaman returned to his utensils on the deerskin, put the still smoking sage bundle beside it on the packed dirt floor, picked up some of the herbs, walked back to the waiting people and sprinkled them over everybody.

Next he returned to his alter, carefully picked up the bowl with the water and after drinking from it Riverdog first offered it to Liz, then to Michael and Isabelle and then to everybody else. When he reached Cal Langley, the shaman looked at him carefully and then nodded and handed him the bowl too.

After the alien had drunk from the water and handed Riverdog the bowl back, he tried to move back into the group, but the old man wouldn’t let him. Quite the opposite, he grabbed Cal’s arm and with determination guided him to stand beside Michael and Isabelle.
*~~*~~*
After the cleansing ritual was completed, Riverdog approached Liz again and guided her to the Granolith. Once there he quietly advised her “Little one, it’s your turn now.” And with a smile the old man stepped back.

For a moment Liz stood there, transfixed on the spot Riverdog had left her. After looking at the elegant cone before her, she turned towards the others, letting her feelings of insecurity show. First she stared at Michael, who stood there tall and strong with his arms crossed in front of his chest; he gave her nod a of approval. Then her gaze wandered to Isabelle, who seemed to be just as insecure as she felt herself, but at the same time very exited about what was about to happen. She gave Liz a smile and a nod, trusting her to do what was right.

Maria was just being Maria, ready to pass out from excitement and fear, sniffing on her ever present cedar oil, but at the same time she managed to convey her wholehearted trust to Liz, trust that said ‘I know you will do what’s right, I trust you, always!’

She let her eyes glide to the Valenti men, who with their nods showed their trust in her too! This overwhelming show of trust from all of her friends left Liz shaken.

The last person whom Liz made eye contact with was Riverdog. Silently the two exchanged long looks and didn’t move, barely breathing. This curious exchange of silent communication left Liz calm and secure. After the shaman felt his young friend calming down, he gave her nod, which she answered with one decisive one of her own.

Everybody else in the chamber had followed this silent exchange between friends, not really sure what to think of it.
*~~*~~*
And an unexpected Surprise…
Fortified with her friends’ trust Liz turned towards the Granolith and bowed. She wasn’t sure if she should talk out loud or just telepathically, but decided that everybody had the right to know what was going on and so she began “Granolith, you find me before you, and I don’t know what to do. I don’t want to seem disrespectful or anything alike, but I have no idea how to address you?”

Everything was so quiet; you could’ve heard a needle drop. Everybody waited with bated breath for any kind of reaction. They didn’t have to wait long before a disembodied deep voice could be heard “My Lady, queen of Antar and keeper of the Granolith…”

Liz was distracted by some commotion behind her. She turned just in time to hear her mother wail “q… queeen…? Oh my god!” and see her fall against her father in a dead faint. Luckily her father seemed do be going on autopilot, because he looked as bad as Nancy, but was able to grab her before she hit the hard ground.

Reacting fast, Maria waved the cedar oil under Nancy’s nose, and while she was at it, she stuck it under Jeff nose too. It seemed to do the trick. Disoriented the redhead opened her eyes and looked at everybody staring down at her. She needed a moment to find her bearings, but when she did, Nancy was quite embarrassed; she most definitely wasn’t the fainting kind, not her!

Liz had moved to her mom’s side too and worriedly asked, “Mom, what happened?” “Nothing for you to worry, sweetheart, I just forgot all about the queen thing, and when HE addressed you like THAT, it just caught me by surprise, you know?” Seeing Liz’s unconvinced look on her, Nancy assured her, “really, I’m fine, sorry I interrupted you, but now you can proceed, ok?” Sparing her mother more embarrassment Liz agreed and returned to her place in front of the Granolith.

Not really sure on how to proceed after that interruption, Liz opened her mouth to apologize, but the Granolith beat her to it and said “My queen, your mother is all right, it was just a little shock, that’s all and the baby wasn’t hurt by the near fall either.” Hearing this cone thing talk about her health amused Nancy and she was barely able to suppress her mirth, but couldn’t resist and ironic “thank you, I’m glad to hear it!”

When Nancy had regained her composure she suddenly remembered the part of the baby not being hurt and asked confused “why would Liz’s babies be hurt by my fainting spell? That surely doesn’t make any sense at all, does it?”

The Granolith began ”M’am…” but Nancy interrupted him and said, “don’t call me m’am, I’m not that old!” For a minute the cone was quiet and then said, “Sorry Mrs. Parker, I’m not really used to they ways of the humans. But I wasn’t talking of my queen’s babies, Mrs. Parker, I was talking about yours!”

”I’m not pregnant, my daughter is!” Nancy objected impatiently, what would that thing know about that anyway? But the Granolith knew better “Mrs. Parker, in this case I’m honored to inform you that your last coupling early this morning has been successful and you’re expecting a baby girl!” Shocked Nancy stared openmouthed at the Granolith and let the news sink in. As soon as she could assemble the Granolith’s information, a red-faced and embarrassed Nancy hid her face in her husband’s shoulders, while Jeff wished for a shoulder of his own to hide in.

After the initial shock, the grownups’ chuckles turned into outright laughter, while the smaller children weren’t sure what had happened to make the older people laugh.

The teens were all at least as embarrassed as the Parkers. That most definitely was too much information; they didn’t need to hear about any of their parents’ having sex, eewww!!!
*~~*~~*
Cal had observed everything closely and after the first feelings of awe and reverence for the Granolith had diminished, he was highly entertained by these humans. He’d never realized that they could be so much fun. The people that surrounded him in Hollywood always wanted something from him, but here, he was just an observer and he liked it.
*~~*~~*
Nobody in the chamber knew what to do next. How would the Granolith know about a pregnancy that was only a few hours old?

After things had calmed down and Liz (who really didn’t feel like talking about her potential sister, after all she did know where that had happened!) tried again to bring clarity into this situation, addressed the cone “Granolith, you have me really confused. I thought we had to come here for information about Zander, and Max and the summit. Also, there must be a reason that you have called us all here on this day, because we only invited our families to this meeting. Could you please tell us why?”

And then she remembered another important question and asked “and before I forget, how do we address you, is there any kind of protocol that we have to know about? Because this is all new to us and we want to do everything correctly, you know? Oh, and by the way, please don’t call me queen all the time, that makes me feel really strange, ok!”

Looking behind herself Liz could her friends nodding in agreement; the parents (minus her own, who were still in shock!) looked on and seemed to approve of this approach. The others were just plain curious and watched what was going on. And of course there was Cal, who, at the moment was an observer. He knew he had to stay back for now and wait for the Granolith to address him, but until that time came, he intended to enjoy the show. He was really impressed with the way Liz interacted with the Granolith, and was surprised when she asked for less formality. This would really help them all to feel less awkward; they were after all just simple country folks.

The Granolith started to light up, swirling with his beautiful colors, all the while humming gently. After a few minutes he said, “I had to check all my information, because where I come from we were very formal, there were protocols after protocols after protocols. But I just found some links with information that we can omit all this and be less formal. It will just take some time for me to adjust my Data!”

”Thank you, Granolith!” Liz replied politely and then added “how do we go on, because a few of us have many questions about you, about the reason for being sent to earth, and of course why you didn’t prevent the mindwarps and more importantly why did you let that gerbil kill Alex?” Taking a deep breath Liz continued, “from what we understand you are very powerful, also you have been communicating with Max and I. You actually brought Max to the summit that’s being held on your station, somewhere out there in the universe, so, please, I really don’t understand how you could let one of us be killed by those traitors.”

Liz could hear several people sniffling behind her and she too had to fight the tears that wanted to come. Finally losing her composure, she cried “why, for gods sake, tell me, why couldn’t you do something about that and save our friend?”

37a, The Granolith, 08/12/2000, Saturday 6.20 pm
It took a while for everybody to calm down again. The Granolith remained silent; he waited for the humans’ dispositions to quiet down until he felt they were comfortable enough to start the discussions again. He wasn’t used to these kinds of temperamental outbursts. No, on Antar, the only people he’d had to deal with were the shamans and the wise women from the convents and his Keeper. Sometimes they would let a seer meet with him, and of course the king was allowed to come by anytime he wished, but they all were very quiet and well behaved people, no outburst of any nature, none at all! Also they all were very high sticklers on protocol, in fact; they seemed to thrive on it.

Now, after all that had transpired on Antar and with hindsight, the Granolith questioned the emotionless state of mind of the Royals, the nuns from the convent, the shaman, in fact of anybody in any position of power; they all had their emotions bread right out of them. It was frowned upon because it was regarded as very common. But now, after having observed earthlings for the last fifty years and especially the ones here in the chamber, he grudgingly had to admit that even though the humans weren’t as refined and technologically sadly lacking when compared to the Antarians, they were a lot more interesting to deal with.
*~~*~~*
When he was ready, the Granolith addressed the avid listeners in front of him “My Lady…” Johnny’s loudly whispered question “That’s my niece, why the heck does he call her my Lady?” could be heard by all, and the Granolith decided to change the explanations he’d come up with. He realized he had to simplify things for these good people, or they’d be here until forever and a day. For just a second he wished his Antarian’s back, but really, only just for a second. This lot here was really much more entertaining.
*~~*~~*
To regain the attentions of all, the Granolith flared with his lights. When he felt everybody’s interest on him the Granolith began again “I understand that there is a lot of confusion here, especially for the new members. Now I will proceed to enlighten you all. I will start with explaining what I am and why I couldn’t interfere before now. Then I will let you know what has been going on with you and then I will tell you why everybody is here. But before I begin I want you to sit down, because this is going take a while.”

Suddenly a quiet rumble could be heard and on the side of the chamber, parts of the walls slid down into the ground. Awed, everybody watched as comfortable looking benches were moved into the room. When everything was to the Granolith’s liking he invited his ‘guests’ to take a seat and waited until they were comfortable.
*~~*~~*
I am…
The Granolith began “my Queen…” seeing Liz express her displeasure with a mean frown he corrected himself and said “umm, Liz?” seeing her nod of approval he continued “first to answer your question of how to address me, you can just call me Granolith, I’ve never been called anything specific, so that would be fine.”

Sidney, who had been listening just as avidly as everybody else couldn’t stop herself and just blurted “Granowhat? That’s a very difficult word!” and almost in tears she added “I don’t think I can remember that!” The other kids sadly agreed with Sidney.

The Granolith checked through his data and then answered “Sidney, that’s alright, you don’t have to worry about it. Why don’t you just call me Grano? Wouldn’t that be easier?”

”Grano? Grano?” Sidney tried out that strange name but didn’t sound too sure about it. Maria, who had observed the little girl, suddenly got involved and said “Granolith, why can’t we just call you Granny? That’s a common word here on earth. It could be a good nickname for you. And just imagine, if we ever talk about you and an enemy happens to overhear us talking about Granny, they would never guess that we meant you. I think if they hear Grano, they might know that we were talking of you.” Suddenly Maria realized that the Granolith might not appreciate this nickname because it was female so she quickly added “or if you prefer the masculine version we could call you Grandpa?”

”Why, Maria, that is a brilliant idea! You can decide if you prefer Grandpa or Granny. To me it’s the same difference because I’m neither male nor female, I’m neutral!”

Maria was pleasantly shocked, she couldn’t believe the complement the Granolith had just paid her. She never thought of herself as ‘brilliant’ and imagined that not many people did, especially with the brainiacs they had in the group. She was reveling in the moment and happily began to chant “I’m brilliant, I’m brilliant, I too can be brilliant!”

Michael observed her and chuckled. Since it was obvious that his pixie… Michael surprised himself with that statement and needed a moment to think this through. He came to the conclusion that, yes indeed, Maria was his pixie again. After all, things started to look better and he was hopeful! He came back from his short musing and looked at his pixie who was still far too occupied chanting as to make any decisions.

Grabbing this chance the tall alien put in his opinion, because he sure as hell wasn’t starting to call anybody Granny or Grandpa, not for all the pixies in the world “Gramps, we call you Gramps!” He spoke so decidedly that nobody even thought to challenge his decision.
*~~*~~*
After they all had accepted his name the Granolith began ”I am the Granolith, the greatest gift from the Great Mother of All Things to her people!” speaking in the most beautiful voice anybody had ever heard. The sound wasn’t too deep, nor too high, nor too shrill, no, it was just perfect. It gave the listeners a sense of peace, security and trust. And while the Granolith explained his functions to the grownups, he lulled the little ones into a deep and peaceful slumber.

“She wanted to help them lessen their burden and formed me. I was created to collect all knowledge of all the great minds. I was given the freedom of thought, which means that I can assimilate any spoken language anywhere in the universe, I can read and retain everything I sense or hear, and then transform it and give it useful and understandable meaning. And then I also can pass on all that knowledge to anybody who asks, IF (and that’s a very important if) I think that person is trustworthy and responsible. Over the millennia of my existence I have amassed as much knowledge as is possible in all of the universe.

You can believe me when I say I’m not bragging but just stating the fact that besides all the Great Gods, I’m the most powerful being. I know everything from boiling a 3 minute egg to childbirth to building an atom-bomb. And now the Great Mother of All Things has also given me the right to say no, if I think somebody is not trustworthy or tries to use me for personal gain. This means that I have been programmed to recognize right from wrong, and I can see and sense the person’s intent.

There are other aspects to my creation, but they’re not yet in full use because the king and my keeper haven’t had all the information needed. With my help you can travel the galaxies. If you don’t feel like traveling you can just see whatever you want to see through me. Time travel is also a possibility, but it will only be allowed to do for the sake of knowledge, not to change events. The last time events were changed it brought a lot of heart ache, but it was essential for the survival of this planet and our Galaxy.”

This latest bit of news let the avid listeners become nervous. The Granolith realized this immediately and explained, “you have to know that nobody can force me into divulging anything that could harm others in any way. With the power to sense the people’s intent, I also received the power to let people forget anything I told them, this ensures against any and all misuse of my knowledge.”

The people in the chamber became restless. Some had questions that needed answers, some were just overwhelmed with all this new information. The Granolith decided that they could ask questions to his being later, now they had the most important facts and there was a lot more to tell. Things that related to them directly.

Ancient Indian proverb: Treat the earth well. It was not given to you by your parents, it was loaned to you by your children. We do not inherit the earth from our ancestors, we borrow it from our children.
