The Granolith's Chosen Ones

Couples/Category: M/L, CC

Rating: Mature sometimes Adult

Summary: After Tess left in the Granolith, she never came back. This story takes place before Graduation. In a short time span a lot of things happen, a lot is revealed and everybody’s lives change dramatically. I know it’s not much to go on, but that’s all you get! Warning to all Michael lovers! For part of this story Michael gets a pretty good bashing; but, hey, it's not my fault if he behaves like an ass! (remember, like when he had the seal!)

Information: **Telepathic conversation**

Disclaimer: The characters of "Roswell" belong to Jason Katims, Melinda Metz, WB, and UPN. They are not mine and no infringement is intended.

Author’s Note: Hi everybody, this is the very first story I’m writing and I decided to go all the way and post it. I always had stories going around in my head, some longer some shorter, but I never wrote them down. So I figured since all of you authors out there are courageous enough to post your stories I could try it with mine too. I have to say though, that the fics are a lot livelier in my imagination than when I write them, but I hope to get better with time and practice. Also English is not my Mother tongue, so from time to time you will probably wonder about the turn of my phrases and mistakes. With all this said I appreciate constructive criticism, I mean positive and negative, but please be fair!!!

I want to say a biiiig thank you to my beta Moira, she's very patient with me

Thanks, Chula

01, A new beginning, Friday 06/16/2000, early morning
The light of the Granolith bathed the room in soft, warm colours. In a corner of the chamber the two lovers were sleeping in a sleeping bag. Even in sleep they were holding on to each other, afraid of letting the other go. After their night’s activities they were very exhausted.

Max was the first to wake up and was quite disoriented, but all he needed was to feel Liz in his arms and he was jolted into instant alertness. He remembered his and Liz’s reconciliation and now she was his again, just as he was hers. Max savoured the sensations of Liz in his arms, it just felt right; this was were she belonged.

He started to feel the kinks and stiffness in his bones from sleeping on the hard ground. As Liz shifted in her slumber a big grin spread across his face. Slowly it started to sink in, to become reality, that the two of them where back together again. He was happy, actually more than happy, he was ecstatic, gloriously, deliriously ecstatic. He felt like jumping and dancing, singing and shouting and laughing and crying all together, at one and the same time. Instead he had to lie motionless as not to waken his sweetheart who was sleeping soundly, draped all over him.

While waiting for Liz to open her eyes, he let his thoughts wander over the last few hours. Just now Max didn’t feel like reliving the painful discussions and revealments with which they had started last night’s meeting. Oh no, he much rather remembered the resulting reconciliation. Now that was something that dreams where made of, but not even his wildest dreams, and he had had quite a few of those, had prepared him for the onrush of feelings that assaulted him.

He remembered how Liz had never seemed more beautiful than last night when she smiled through her tears, her hair all dishevelled, her eyes red and swollen and her nose running from all the crying, but she was smiling and radiantly happy. He guessed that in that moment he probably looked the same, definitely not very manly, but he was too happy to care.

The fingers that started to stroke his naked chest distracted him in a pleasant way and it took Max a moment to realise that those where Liz’s fingers and that she was finally waking up.

As they lay in the sleeping bag she started to move her body along his and he noticed that not only his was chest naked, no, they both were without a stitch on their bodies. The moment she opened her eyes he lost his ability to think or speak and he just kept staring at her beautiful face and time ceased to exist.

It seemed that Liz was afflicted with the same malady because she stared right back at him. After a while she started to blush and shyly lowered her eyes.

Finally Max found his voice and just the perfect word for such a memorable occasion and uttered bashfully “Hi”

“Hi right back at you” she answered with a giggle only to add a moment later, “this is sooo awkward, I mean I don’t know what to say, I mean I don’t know what to do, I mean what comes now? I’ve never been in a situation, oh boy this is sooo, sooo, sooo awkward” and with that said Liz hid her face in his broad chest.

This was all that was needed to loosen the strange nervousness they both where experiencing and they started to laugh to relieve the tension of the moment. Amongst hysterical giggles and curiously eying each other, a new heavy make out session began.

After a while they came back to reality and Max became aware of not having used any protection and almost had a heart attack.

“Max, are you ok?” Liz wanted to know, because she got seriously worried, as his usually fresh complexion seemed to turn all different shades of green.

He didn’t know where to look but started nonetheless: “Do you…?” After swallowing the big lump in his throat he had to start again “do you realize that we didn’t use any protection? You know, condoms? In the heat of the moment I completely forgot about it. We could be pregnant right now!”

Smiling she reassured him “We should be ok Max. Because my menstruation used to be very irregular my gynaecologist gave me the pill. So you see, there’s nothing to worry about and anyway, it’s not the right time of the month for anything to happen.”

“Oh boy, what a scare! I most definitely want children you know, just not now, we’re a bit young for that!” Max started to feel better immediately and Liz wholeheartedly agreed.
*~~*~~*~~*~~*~~*~~*
Closer and closer and…
The sleeping bag became too uncomfortable and cramped and Liz wanted to get up to look at the Granolith. This was when she noticed the next problem; she remembered her nakedness. That was a very awkward moment. After second thought she decided to play it cool and slowly untangled her limbs from Max’s. This involved a lot of slipping and sliding on his body and she could feel the heat start to rise from her toes to hear face. Embarrassed she started to giggle nervously and became really clumsy. As she tried to open the big zipper on the sleeping bag she had to move over her lover’s chest. As she felt her naked breast touch his, she became very distracted and her fingers lost all control of the zipper, getting that stupid thing stuck.

By this time, Max too had a rapidly growing problem: His lower anatomy started to come alive. When he became aware of his dilemma his ears turned a very embarrassing red. “Liz’s naked tits on my chest, wow!” Max never knew just how sensitive he was there! He tried to sneak a peak but couldn’t really see anything interesting because the two of them were squeezed too close together for that, but boy could he feel them!

His eyes turned smoky with desire, his breathing became erratic and he just couldn’t resist her any longer. So he dipped his head in just the right position and started kissing her senseless. Needless to say that Liz didn’t go to check out the Granolith since Max kept her otherwise occupied.

By midmorning their growling stomachs called attention to their ravenous appetites, this time for food. Since the mood was now thoroughly broken they addressed more ordinary topics. While Max brought over the leftover snacks from the evening before, Liz decided to check out the Granolith. She stood before it and was absolutely fascinated.

She studied this beautiful cone-shaped thing with its swirling colours for quite some time and was quite lost in thought, when all of a sudden realisation hit her and she exclaimed, “oh my god, Max, I just realised that if the Granolith is still here, Tess never left earth, at least not in this,” to stress her point she nodded her head in the direction of the big cone-thing and concluded “she mindwarped us all into believing that she did. That also means she could show up again and probably at the most impossible moment. Max, we will have to decide how to deal with the bitch! We have to be ready for her before she shows up!”

After Liz's outburst Max became very thoughtful. He remembered the pain Tess had put them all through, most of all Liz and him self. Thanks to the Granolith, last night had cleared many mysteries of his life and he knew with absolute certainty that, no matter what, Tess was going to pay for everything. She betrayed them all big time, and he suddenly knew that, on Antar, she had been a traitor too. She was working with the enemy then as she was now.

Right at that moment Max swore to do everything in his power to make sure that Tess was going down. No more chances for her, she’d already had her second one here on earth and she just proved that she was pure evil. She manipulated, lied, cheated, mindwarped and worst of all she killed Alex. He was glad that now he knew Tess’s baby wasn’t his, that he hadn’t betrayed Liz.

For the first time Max knew just how realistic those damn mindwarps were, you couldn’t tell the difference between a mindwarp and reality, unless you were lucky enough to break out of one.

With a deep, heartfelt sigh he said, “as much as I hate it, we have to call an emergency meeting. I can just imagine how well this will go down with Michael. Lately he has been so difficult. I don’t know what to do, because whatever I do, it’s always wrong.”
*~~*~~*~~*~~*~~*~~*
They decided to call a meeting in the late afternoon at the quarry. Max first called Michael who wasn’t too happy to hear about another “useless” meeting but promised to come on his motorbike. With a “there better be a good reason for this or else…” he ended the call abruptly.

Max was in too good of a mood to be put off by Michael’s gruffness and called the sheriff. “Hi sheriff this is Max.” He waited for Valenti’s greeting before coming to the reason of his call, “we have some important news that concern us all and so I’m calling a meeting at the quarry. I would appreciate it very much, if you could take the time and join us?” Max added “it could be one of the longer ones because some things just came up that we have to prepare for and we really think you could help us find some solutions. So, due to the time we figured we could have a picnic with the meeting” Jim Valenti agreed to come and offered to bring Kyle with him.

Meanwhile Liz called her friend. “Hi Maria,” and before Liz could continue, Maria went into full babble mode, “Liz where are you, I was looking for you and nobody knew where you were. I was so worried about you, because you haven’t been quite yourself lately, actually for some time not just lately. So I really don’t like it if you just disappear on me like that. You know with all the weird things that can happen, you know, Czech things!!”

Liz realized that only a shock or a bribe could shut her up. So to keep the call as short as possible she threw out a bribe that was irresistible to her friend: “Maria, this is really important and I don’t have much time right now, so please sit down, listen and all will be explained later, ok? And if you’re a good girl and listen without interrupting me, I will tell you something that nobody else knows so far, does that sound acceptable?”

Maria’s curiosity won out quickly and she exclaimed excitedly “Absolutely, but it better be good!”

Taking a deep breath Liz went on “Oh yes it is. We’re calling a meeting at the quarry, come around 5 pm and please bring Isabelle along. Since the meeting is going to be a long one, could you go to my dad and ask him if he would organise a picnic for us all?”

“Is everybody coming? Do I have to call Michael, or the Valenti’s?” and Maria being Maria just couldn’t help herself and started to hyperventilate “Are those bad news you’re going to tell us? Oh my god, are new Czechs around? Oh my god, oh my god, what are we going to do, what will happen? Finally we have some peace and quiet and now it starts all over again! Liz what’s happening? I need some cedar oil. Oh god where do I have that blasted oil when I need it?”

Liz rolled her eyes in exasperation and informed her friend calmly but forcefully “Hey, Maria, you don’t need the oil right now, but bring it to the meeting, ok? Michael and the Valenti’s have been informed and are coming. So please, Maria, just call my dad about the picnic. One last thing, please call Isabelle and tell her she has to come, no excuses are accepted, ok? Be as forceful and convincing as you have to be, but bring her along. If she does her Ice Princess routine, you just go into full hurricane DeLuca mode” “But Liz…”

Liz knew just how intimidating Isabelle could be. She didn’t get her title “Ice Princess” for being a sweetheart. Knowing her oldest friend since they were in diapers gave Liz the advantage of knowing exactly which buttons to push to convince Maria to tackle the impossible! Ruthlessly she used her knowledge, “no but’s about it Maria, I know you can do it, we rely on you. Of course…” Stopping just long enough to peack Maria’s curiosity, Liz continued, “well, if you think you really can’t do it, I will call Isabelle myself and then she’ll be the one I’ll be telling my good news and she’ll be the first to know”

Maria didn’t like to hear THAT at all! She always bragged about how she could take on anybody she wanted to, and she would prove it too, “hey I didn’t say I couldn’t do it, did I?? No, I can tackle Ice Princess Isabelle any time I want to. She’s no match for me, everybody knows that! And, by the way, I can also be short to the point. So first I will call your dad about the picnic and then I’ll call Isabelle and won’t accept any excuses. And now you will tell me what you promised or else you can forget the whole deal, you hear LIzzy???”

“I heard you, I heard you, ok Max and I went to the chamber and had a long talk, and now we are back together again! That will be small part of the news tonight. But I really have to go now, see you Maria” as Liz had learned during her long friendship with Maria, she ended the conversation quickly, because she knew, her friend wouldn’t stop pestering her for more info. Already she could hear Maria yelling into the phone for more answers.

Liz truly hoped that Maria would bring enough cedar oil, because she wouldn’t be surprised if things got completely out of hand at the meeting. With a big sigh she put away her cell phone and looked for Max to see how he was faring. The moment their eyes met she started to calm down and turned to the love of her life for reassurance that everything was going to be all right.

Hi Kate, thanks for your note. It will be a while before you get to know who the father of Tess' baby is, so I hope you keep reading!

02, Before the meeting, Friday 06/16/2000, late morning
Maria decided to go and see Mr. Parker personally. She figured the chances of getting some really delicious food would be better if she was there to “help” organise it.

Before going to the CrashDown Maria called Isabelle. Impatiently tapping her foot, she waited for her alien friend to answer her call.

Before answering her cell, Isabelle checked the caller ID. Since lately her interactions with her human friends had been rather chilly, and on top of that she had a hot date with Jesse Ramirez, her greeting was a rather frosty one. “Maria, I’m busy so you better be quick! What did you want?”

”Well hello to you too Isabelle, I really appreciate your charming welcome!” was Maria’s phoney, sugary sweet retort.

Isabelle was quite sorry about being unfriendly to Maria, because the human girl only called her when she had to. Also, Maria was well known for her temper and this meant that now she had to deal with an aggravated girl. She had to get her in a better mood again and rephrased her greeting “Maria I’m really sorry for snapping at you, but I was concentrating very hard on my work and you caught me completely unawares. Please tell, how can I help you?”

“A meeting has been called and we all have to attend, no exceptions! We have to be at the quarry at 5 pm. I have to organise a picnic because it will be a long meeting. Since Michael is riding there on his bike, I will come and get you around 4.45.” Realising this sounded more like an order she added “if that’s acceptable to you Isabelle.”

Isabelle wasn’t too happy to be ordered to attend a meeting, especially since she had a rendezvous with Jesse Ramirez that evening and she didn’t want to miss it. “Maria, you will have to excuse me to Max, I just can’t come, I have a date tonight that I can’t cancel, it’s too important you know.”

Maria was pissed and she let Isabelle know it “Isabelle, forget it, I’m not your lackey and make your excuses. You can call Max yourself and see what he thinks. All I know is that there is some good news and some very important new information, even the sheriff is coming. So what I’m going to do is: I will go to the CrashDown and organise the picnic. I will leave there at 4.45 on the dot. If you need a ride be there. If you’re not there I’m going to assume you’re not coming with Max’s knowledge or you have your own ride. But I strongly suggest you cancel your date and meet me here! I have to go now, bye Isabelle” Maria ended the conversation really fast so Isabelle couldn’t talk her into doing something she didn’t want to do.

”And now let’s tackle Mr. P” Maria started to think about how to approach her best friend’s father; heck he was almost her father too. As often as she stayed with the Parkers, she practically lived there. Anyway, Mr. P. was a teddy bear, unless he got riled which luckily happened very rarely. She was so intent on her mission to find him that she almost ran into him. “Hi Mr. P., you’re just the man I’m looking for!”

Jeff Parker knew Maria really well and could tell by her demeanour that she wanted some favour. So he raised his eyebrows, looked at her, and waited for what was to come. He didn’t have to wait long.

“Mr. Parker, we, our whole group decided to have a picnic out by the quarry and have some fun, especially since it’s Friday and none of us have to go to school or to work tomorrow. So I have to organise the food for all of us and Liz thought that I should come to you for help. I know it’s very short notice, but we really would appreciate it very, very, very much!” she finished this with a wide-eyed look and batting her lashes that usually got her what she wanted.

“And why, might I ask isn’t my daughter organising things here? After all she lives here,” Jeff wanted to know.

Maria came well prepared and answered “Since it’s always Liz that organises the food demands in our group, and that’s of course thanks to her being your daughter, we decided to split the organisation differently this time. So here I am! What do you say, Mr. P., can we put a picnic together? I will have to leave in about 40 minutes, that should give us enough time, don’t you think?”

He just grinned at Maria, sighed and marched into the kitchen “Are you coming Maria? Or do you think I’m going to do all the work by myself?”

The two of them put together a very generous picnic with hamburgers, potato salad, chips and enough sodas to still the biggest thirsts. For desert Jeff packed one of Amy DeLuca’s fabulous “men in blackberry pies.” Maria also made sure to pack enough Tabasco sauce for those in the group that had a green touch in their makeup.

At 4.45 pm, Maria wasn’t really surprised to see Isabelle entering the CrashDown. She was in quite a temper and made sure Maria knew about it. With Mr. Parker’s help the girls managed to stow the meal in the red Jetta. They waved to Mr. Parker and were on their way.

After a moment of Maria’s silence Isabelle’s curiosity got the better of her and she asked Maria if she knew what was going on. Maria was only too happy to share the good news of the Liz and Max reconciliation. In fact she was bubbling with excitement and couldn’t wait to see Liz to squeeze more details out of her, but that had to wait until they were alone.

They arrived just in time to surprise their friends in the midst of a heated make out session!
*~~*~~*~~*~~*~~*~~*
Waiting for the gang, Friday late afternoon…
At the quarry, Max and Liz were lazily sitting in the sunshine enjoying the quiet before the expected storm. Liz let her thoughts wander back to yesterday’s lunchtime that she had spent in the eraser room with Max. Now, in hindsight, she could chuckle about the bundles of nerves she had been, consumed with worries and what if’s.

As everybody who knew Liz Parker could tell, she always liked to plan out everything to the last detail, she needed to be in control. Control was important to her peace of mind. But in the last few months her life had been so uncontrollably crazy, she was still reeling from the aftermath of all the shocks she’d had to deal with. She desperately wished for a “Bobby Ewing moment” in the shower, where she would wake up and say, “thank god Tess and future Max were just a bad dream” but sadly she had no such luck.
*~~*~~*~~*~~*~~*~~*
Flashback to Yesterday, Thursday lunchtime ***
During Biology class Max was very quiet. He kept glancing nervously her way. After a while he asked her for a meeting but wouldn’t tell her any other details, just that it would be the two of them and that it was very important. After Liz agreed, they decided to meet in the eraser room during lunchtime. That way they could expect to be undisturbed.

After class Max went straight to their meeting point and was pacing the small room, his heart drumming wildly in his chest. He was sure that, if Liz didn’t show up soon, he would go nuts. For some time now he had been aware of the fact that the moment of truth was approaching fast and then he spent last night doing what he was really good at doing: He worried and worried and then worried some more. In the early morning hours he decided the time to act had come. After all, wasn’t he supposed to be a great leader? A king of a whole planet? And even if he didn’t remember those times, he should be decisive and in control. So, no more worrying, no more second guessing his decisions. No, he, Maxwell Evans, was turning a new leaf and from now on he was a man on a mission and he would not be deterred. The problem was that the moment he saw Liz all his good intensions left him and he fell back on his “old” ways and became very quiet and kept glancing nervously her way. After much debating with himself he found his courage and now here he was, waiting and pacing in the eraser room.

For a short moment he dwelled on the real purpose of this room, besides cleaning erasers this was the “make out place” of West Roswell High. Max most definitely was sorry to misuse this room for such a serious meeting, but he was hoping to be able to rectify this grave lapse with Liz in the near future.

Meanwhile Liz went to meet Maria at her locker to inform her of the change in their lunch plans. She was very nervous (the butterflies in her stomach were driving her nuts) so she began to worry. All kinds of thoughts were running through her mind. What did Max want with her in the eraser room? She was well aware of the rumours that THAT was the place where quite a few of the girls from her school had lost their virginity. Some of the best had surrendered there. But since she was well aware that there were problems that needed sorting out between her and Max, she figured she wasn’t in any danger of losing anything in the eraser room on this very day. That thought stopped her in her tracks and she started to play out all kinds of scenarios of what and how things could happen.

When Maria arrived she found her friend very absentminded and she first had to get her back to reality. “Hey Chica, are you ready for lunch?” “What, oh, hi Maria!” Liz blushed furiously and, hoping her friend couldn’t read her thoughts, answered “I’m sorry Maria but I have to cancel lunch today. Something came up and I have to take care of it first. And no Maria I can’t talk about it yet, maybe later, but most definitely not now, because I don’t know anything myself yet!” Liz rambled on and looked around nervously. “It’s really, really important and I just can’t mess this up, not again. I just have to rush off now. We’ll talk later ok? Bye now”

Maria grabbed Liz before she could run off. She was confused, because usually, if anybody was rambling, it was she. Liz was always calm, clear and knew what to say, unlike herself, she could talk a lot without saying anything at all.

“Liz, are you ok? You don’t seem to be quite yourself, in fact I’d say you’re completely out of whack and we can’t have that, because that’s my job. Here, I have something for you” with that Maria searched in her locker for one of her herbal remedies to help her friend calm down. “Three drops under your tongue, and it will help steady yourself. Take that bottle with you and any time you feel nervous, take three drops. Now I want to know what has you in such a dither. No excuses, tell!”

“I have to meet Max, that’s all I know. He asked for a meeting and I’m already late. Maria, please don’t tell the others yet, because I have no idea what this is about.” “Ok I won’t ask yet, but I expect details later, promise, otherwise I’m telling!” “Ok Maria, I promise to tell you all I can later, you’re the best! I have to go now, bye!” with that Liz grabbed the books she needed after the lunch period and ran off to meet Max.
End of Flashback***

Rudely Liz was brought back from her musings by the noise of Michael’s fast approaching motorbike. He pulled to a stop, got off his bike and leaned it against a big rock. With long, stomping strides Michael approached Max and Liz and grumbled “I don’t have time for this so make it quick, with any luck I won’t miss the whole game! Anyway, where are the others, I don’t want to sit around here and wait.”

After a moment he noticed that his friends where sitting together very closely and relaxed, none of this “uncomfortable and preoccupied shit” they had been displaying lately. He looked at them one more time and decided to avoid all this loviedovie stuff for as long as he could. Before Max or Liz could respond he turned and walked over to where Maria and Isabelle were sitting on rocks by the Jetta. He couldn’t do emotional, damn it; he just wasn’t cut out for it.

“Hi, Maria, Isabelle, do you know what this is all about? And when did they get together again?” Luckily the girls didn’t have to answer him, because just then the sheriff showed up in his Rover and stopped besides them. “Hello everybody, Kyle and I both were able to take the evening off. Actually, since I don’t work a shift this weekend, we can stay for how ever long this takes.”

After this greeting the Sheriff turned to Max who was approaching the group with Liz and said, “You sounded really urgent, I hope the news aren’t too bad.” “Well, truthfully we don’t really know, but we have to discuss this and if necessary we have enough time to get prepared. Let’s find a place where we all can sit down comfortably and prepare our picnic that Maria graciously organised at the CrashDown and then we will talk.”

03, The meeting, Friday 06/16/2000, late afternoon
It didn’t take them long to find a comfortable spot for a picnic that was also hidden enough to hold their meeting. After Max and Liz had stilled their biggest hunger, they started the meeting.

Somewhat embarrassed, Max addressed his friends “Hmm, ok, I apologise for disrupting any plans you may have had for this evening…” this elicited a not so discreet cough from Isabelle, who was still mad about having to postpone her date with Jesse. Unimpressed Max continued, “but we have learned some very important information, important for all of us.” At this he let his gaze wander over everybody sitting in the circle.

“As you may have guessed, Liz and I are back together again, and this time it’s for good!” a big happy grin spread across his face, but with a few well chosen words Michael managed to wipe it off “Well, Maxwell, if you got us all out here to tell us the obvious, you can think again. If you want me to be happy for you, then I guess I can be happy for you, but if you think that I want to listen to you going on and on about your reconciliation you can forget it, then I’m out of here!” as he said this, he stood up, turned and started to walk to his bike.

Suddenly Max lost his patience with his friend and ordered “stay where you are and shut up! All the information we’ve got is because we reconciled and connected! I’m most definitely not interested in your comments, so keep them to yourself!”

Michael opened his mouth to reply but, as Max stared him down, he changed his mind and closed it again.

“Last night Liz and I went to the Granolith chamber, because we had a lot of private things to discuss and didn’t need any interruptions. We talked about everything from Tess and her baby to Alex’s death, and what we did and why we did what we did, to how we were falling apart as a group. A lot of interesting things came to light.” “I bet!” Michael grumbled.

Max ignored him and continued “There are a few things that we have to talk about, but the most important one is that the Granolith is still here and intact. Tess didn’t leave with the Granolith, she mindwarped us all.”

Michael blew up “What the hell are you talking about; we all saw the Granolith take off. She most definitely didn’t mindwarp me, I would know if she had done that to me!”

Kyle interrupted him “Michael, that’s just the point of a mindwarp; you don’t know or feel if she is doing it to you!”

“Well, what do you know, you’re just a human, it doesn’t work this way for us!” Michael cut in and prepared himself for a lengthy speech about mindwarps, humans and aliens.

Isabelle saw this and quickly threw in “Kyle’s right, you know Michael, you really don’t feel a mindwarp until it starts to break, but by then you just get very confused, because often you can’t tell the difference between reality and mindwarp, it just sort of melts together! It doesn’t matter if you’re human or alien, the result is the same”

“Well maybe that goes for you, but most definitely not for me, in fact…!”

“In fact” Max stopped his ranting “Isabelle is right, but enough of this. We have more important things to discuss.”

“Of course you’d help your sister, that’s nothing new!” “Michael, enough!”

While listening to all this quibbling Maria’s fantasy got away with her and she started to hyperventilate. Grabbing for her cedar oil she exclaimed, “Oh my god, the bitch from hell is still around! Who is she going after this time? What will we do? What can we do? Oh my god, Oh my god, Oh my god!” Frantically she began to sniff on her oil.

Liz went to her, grabbed her shoulders and gave them a good shake to get her attention! To calm down her agitated friend, Liz forced her to look in her eyes and quietly said “Maria, look at me! Now you need to take a deep breath, inhale, exhale, and again inhale and exhale, that’s good! Do you feel better now? You know everything is under control. We have this meeting to figure things out. I know we have time, she won’t show up right away, we do have time, ok?” Maria just nodded, yes she understood!

Jim Valenti’s POV…
The sheriff had just been listening quietly and observed everybody’s reactions. He didn’t interrupt them because Max, being the leader, had to learn to control these meetings. So far he wasn’t doing too badly. Jim Valenti was very proud of his young friend and realised just how much he had changed since the last time he had seen him. Max, always quiet and shy, was suddenly very strong-minded, decisive and very much in control of the situation. Several times even Michael had to back down, because Max just stopped his grumbling without even thinking about it. “Yes” the sheriff thought “I’m impressed, actually very much so!” Every time the sheriff saw these kids, it amazed him how they stuck together. Sometimes more, sometimes less, but they could always count on each other in times of a crisis.
*~~*~~*
Valenti watched Michael and thought you could spot his rebellious ways from miles away. He was a hot-headed troublemaker in the group, his motto was “shoot first, ask questions later!” Through his upbringing and his origins he learned at an early age to guard his feelings and started hiding behind a stonewall. The young man had a hard time fitting in any kind of group. Even his friends he liked to keep at arms length, and this was especially true for the humans.

Also Michael had a hard time to accepting authority and guidance. Things had to go his way or no way at all. He was erratic and had a flaring temper to boot. He liked to be rude just to irritate the hell out of people, especially Maria, who responded beautifully temperamentally to his taunts. Valenti had to smile at that and thought “Michael sure knows what buttons to push to unleash Maria’s temper.“ Being one of the alien trio, he tended to look down on the inferior humans. Especially since they discovered that in his past life he had been second in command to his King Zan of Antar. That knowledge gave him a feeling of great importance.
*~~*~~*
Then there was Maria DeLuca; lively, cute, loyal, temperamental and very easily excitable. They didn’t call her “Hurricane DeLuca” for nothing! She was Michael’s human on and off again girlfriend. Right now they were more off than on. When she was in a fluster and ranting about things, you had to put everything through a “Maria filter” to understand her. Her long-time friend Liz understood her very well. In fact, those two complimented each other perfectly. Where Maria was vibrant, temperamental and had a tendency to act before thinking, Liz was calmer, more restrained. While Maria enjoyed dressing extravagantly and flashily, Liz preferred dressing more conservatively. They had been inseparable form the very first time they met while still in diapers.
*~~*~~*
For a moment Jim’s thoughts drifted to Alex, the third of the human trio of childhood-friends. He was a sweet, brilliant computer geek, loyal to his two girls and later to the aliens’ cause. He had managed to capture the Ice Princess’s heart right before the traitorous Tess killed him.
*~~*~~*
Jim swallowed heavily as he thought of Tess, the girl he and Kyle had welcomed in their home and family. Well right now was not the time to dwell on her, so he let his gaze wander to Max.
*~~*~~*
Max Evans, teenage boy and exiled King of the planet Antar. He was quiet and reserved, smart, cautious, always responsible and taking care of his friends. A few times he had to get Michael out of trouble, even out of prison. He was always thinking before acting, always trying to blend in, to hide in plain sight. He was already the leader of the alien trio before they even knew of his past as their King.

There was only one time he forgot to be careful and acted on his feelings; that was when he had healed Liz of her fatal wound from the shooting at the CrashDown. He’d had a crush on her since the first time he had seen her. “Hmm” the sheriff mused, “Max and Liz, now there was a couple like none other that I know.” The sheriff had to smile at that and looked to Max’s petite girlfriend.
*~~*~~*
Liz Parker, curious, loyal, very smart, liked to have a plan and a list for everything and was on the best way to become valedictorian of her class. She was the brightest one in this group of friends; there was no doubt about it. She could solve a lot of problems and if she didn’t know how, she most definitely knew where to go to find the answers.

She’d solved the mystery of Alex’s death all alone, almost losing all of her friends at the time. As short as Liz was, she most definitely was the strongest one of them all. Usually at their meetings she didn’t say too much, she preferred to listen. When she did say something, though, the group listened, because her comments were deliberate and thoughtful.
*~~*~~*
Jim’s gaze wandered to the only female alien in the group. Isabelle was a spoiled Ice Princess long before they knew that in her past life on Antar she had indeed been a princess and the King’s sister. She was absolutely gorgeous, with a regal bearing and could easily pass as a model. She always dressed accordingly too. Isabelle was the social butterfly at school, was part of the “in crowd” but her friendship with the other girls of her clique was not even skin-deep.

She was very committed to helping people in need, but still kept her distance. She was afraid to let people get too close to her, so she kept aloof. She could be relied on in a crisis and she would do just about anything for her brother Max and their best friend Michael. At the beginning she had a hard time to open herself to the humans of the group, but by now she had developed a deep trust in them. Still, she couldn’t quite rid herself of her Ice Princess demeanour.
*~~*~~*
And now Kyle, his son, was the newest member of the “I know an alien” club. Kyle, like Liz, had a very dramatic entrance to this very exclusive club. They both almost died because they were shot and then Max healed them.

For Kyle it had been very difficult to accept this knowledge about the aliens this close to his home. After all, his grandfather’s belief in aliens was what had caused his bad reputation in town. They thought he was crazy and so, in the beginning, Kyle wasn’t too keen on having anything remotely to do with green gills. It took a summer spent in a sports camp and finding Buddha to give his son his peace of mind. Just like everybody else in the group he had come around and changed his view. Now he was an equal member of this motley crew.
*~~*~~*~~*~~*~~*~~*
For a short time Max let them act out their fears, and then he started again “Ok, everybody calm down, that’s not all we have to discuss, and I would like to get everything out in the open. We want everybody to have all the facts, then we can think about all that’s been said and start making plans!”

He looked at everybody, took Liz’s hand in his and continued “As you all know, Liz and I are back together again and this time it’s for good!” he looked at Michael who was getting ready to make a cutting remark and said “Michael shut up before you embarrass yourself!”

Max stopped for a moment to get back on track “ok, where was I? Oh yes, we spent last night in the Granolith chamber and after long talks and many tears we were able to forgive each other all the pain and hurt we caused. We realised, that together we are stronger than when we’re separated. Anyway, without going into too many explanations we found out that Liz and I connected.”

Grinning like an idiot he happily added, “let me tell you, this connection is stronger than anything we’ve experienced so far. In fact, we can connect even if we’re not in the same room. We still have to find out how far we can reach with this link.” Everybody was shocked into silence.

After a moment Maria was the first to react. She took a few sniffs of her oil and asked what everybody else wanted to know too and only Maria dared to ask “What do mean when you say, “You connected”? How exactly did this happen? And most importantly, are you sure this is safe for my Lizzy here?” she stopped for a moment to sniff some more oil to get her agitation under control. Suddenly it dawned on her exactly how this must have happened and she screeched “Oh my god, you two did it, didn’t you? I mean IT… you know what I mean with that!”

Liz turned bright red with embarrassment but knew she had to shut her friend up, or things would get very embarrassing for her and Max. She could see Maria get ready for on one of her serious freak-out-rants, where she would blurt out anything that came to her mind, and that was sooo not good. Liz reacted fast by simply putting her hand on her friend’s mouth and that did the trick, at least for the moment.

Jim Valenti was very glad too of Liz’s quick reactions. As he considered all of the kids here as more or less as his, he didn’t want to know about those things. He cringed at this picture, no most definitely not!

Max, whose ears had also turned a very interesting shade of red, heaved a sigh of relief, but before he could continue, Kyle had to add his wisdom “Buddha says: This is a time of change. With the…” A chorus of “Kyle! Shut up!” stopped him. Looking quite put out he said, “Ok, ok, all I wanted to say is, that at the moment it’s not important how this connection came about. I think that talk can wait for another time. It’s more important to know what they were able to find out. Obviously those two have gone through their “time of change” and we should just let them say whatever it is they have to say, that’s all!”

Shocked Max found himself impressed with Kyle’s attitude. He was almost ready to kiss his ex-rival’s feet in gratitude for his timely intervention. With a very grateful nod in Kyle’s direction Max continued “Thanks Kyle! Anyway we found out, that Tess’s baby isn’t mine…” and before the others could interrupt again, he raised his hand in a very commandeering way to stop them and finished “actually, I didn’t sleep with her at all.”

Michael’s “How convenient!” could be heard by everybody and it earned him some irritated looks and from Maria a slap on his arm.

Max just ignored him and explained, “at the moment we know that she was pregnant, but we have no idea whose baby she is expecting. We also know that she was working with Nicholas; that’s how he survived the fire blast at the school.”

Maria interrupted “Is it possible for the little general to be the father?”

Max shook his head and answered, “No, we’re sure about that. But something else that’s very important has come up. We started to remember Antar. At the moment all we know is that the Granolith is somehow giving us this information. The memories are starting to come slowly, bit by bit, and sometimes completely out of context. But what is really of utmost importance is, when we need to know something, we just know.”

“We? As in “we in a Royal kind of way” or as in “you and somebody else kind of way”?” Kyle asked Max, setting punctuating-marks with his fingers. He just wanted to razz his alien friend a bit.

Max took a deep breath and with a sincere look at Isabelle he kept on “As in Liz and I! We have this connection and it’s completely, 100% reliable. For instance, we know with absolute certainty that Zan’s sister Vilandra didn’t betray anybody; on the contrary, Khivar and his sister Ava betrayed her. There is no doubt about it.”

“Really, are you absolutely sure Max?” a teary-eyed Isabelle wanted to know.

“Yes” Max answered and Liz added, “There’s absolutely no doubt about it, Isabelle! I’ll tell you all about it later on, ok?” On hearing the conviction in their voices she burst into tears of relief. Awkwardly the sheriff took her into his arms, gave her a few clumsy pats on her shoulder and let her have a good cry.

Michael, ever the impatient one, cut in very ill-mannered “As interesting as this is, could we just cut down on this emotional crap and continue? I have better things to do!”

“Yeah, what, watch another one of last seasons hockey games?” with that Maria slapped him, quite a bit harder than before, on the back of his head and hissed “a little compassion and good manners would do wonders for you, you moron! You might even find some people who would like you!”

“Ouch, Maria, are you crazy? Will you stop that?“ Michael responded, and gave as good as he could “that’s typical for you, getting all riled up about nothing! All I said was the truth!”

“The truth, you wouldn’t know the truth if it bit you in the ass, that’s the truth, so just...”

Maria was stopped in mid-rant by Max ”Enough of that, please, let’s just get on, ok? We’re almost done here, then you can quibble as much as you two want to!”

Looking at everybody and reassuring himself that they were paying attention he went on “As we now know Tess might still be around somewhere and since she was in cahoots with the skins, we have to be ready for what might come our way whenever it’s coming. Anyway, Liz and I talked about it and we think all of us should start to get ready. We all have to get fit and think of ways to defend ourselves, depending on the situations that arise. When we say fit we mean physically as well as mentally. We should figure out ways of training our alien powers as well as self-defence in the human way, like judo or boxing or something like that...”

In typical Michael fashion he interrupted Max’s speech and yelled, “what, are you nuts? Why would I need any of that shit? I have my powers, that’s enough!”

Liz stopped Michael’s heated shouting by cutting in sharply “Michael, I’m sure, if you really thought this through carefully, you would see the wisdom of it.” Doubtfully scrutinising him, as if questioning his intelligence, she went on with her explanation, “if you’re in a crowd of people you can’t use your powers. Also, sometimes it’s better not to let the attacker know what you’re capable of doing and sometimes you just can’t use them for whatever reasons! It also might help if you can run faster than your enemy so you can outrun them.”

Looking him up and down she remarked, “at the moment I’d say that Isabelle and I could outrun you easily, especially Isabelle, she’s been running for some time now! Also, we’re not saying we have to be experts in self-defence, but it would surely help if we knew some tricks!”

She took a deep breath, looked at Michael and said, “It doesn’t have to be judo, there are a lot of different ways of self-defence. What we’re saying is, we should look in to what’s best for us, and then develop a program for our different wants and needs!”

“What do you mean, different needs, what different needs?” Maria asked and added “you know Liz I’m not the most athletic person here, in fact, I really, really hate it!”

“Exactly, that’s what we’re talking about.” Liz decided to try another way to convince her friend. “Just imagine someone is attacking you, what do you do? And no, you don’t have a pepper-spray with you! Also you could be chased by the enemy, or after you spot a potential enemy, you might want to follow him. You see, there are many reasons to get fit.”

“Liz, you’re scaring me, do you know something we don’t know? Are enemies coming after us, or the FBI, are they on our trails again.” Maria started to seriously freak out.

Kyle saw that Maria was starting to hyperventilate again, so he took the bottle of cedar oil from her hand, unscrewed the lid and started to wave it under her nose “hey, Maria, cool your jets, all she said was to imagine it, not that it’s a fact.”

After a moment’s thought, he started to lose his cool and jabbered in best Maria-fashion “right? Liz? You did say imagine, so it’s just a possibility, right, like hypothetical, that’s what you said, isn’t it?”

Forgetting all about Maria, he put the cedar oil under his own nose and started to sniff on it himself. The shock of discovering himself snuffling “that stuff” was enough to get him out of his panic. To make sure not to act in such an unmanly fashion again, he pushed the bottle in Maria’s hands with a “here Maria, take a sniff, it’ll calm you down.”

After watching Kyle’s byplay, Liz answered, ”Yes Kyle, I did say imagine.” And looking at him she asked very seriously “You know Kyle, you are the fittest one of us here and you know a lot about sports. Also, you know us pretty well, what do you say, could you look into all different sorts of fitness programs and ways of self-defence?”

Turning to Jim she added “Sheriff, maybe you could look into what kind weapons there are that are legal and small enough for us to carry around? We would take all the classes we needed, pass any tests for it. We would also promise to be very responsible with any weapon.”

“I don’t like it, but I understand the potential need for it. So I’ll look around. I know that I can trust you, otherwise I wouldn’t even consider it, you understand?”

“Thanks sheriff, if we didn’t think it necessary I’ wouldn’t ask this of you, I hope you know that. We just think we should be prepared” Liz answered.

Everybody stood around, waiting, not sure what to make of these new revelations. Max and Liz realised their friends where in a state bordering on shock.

Max clapped his hands and announced, “Well, we’re almost done here. Just one more thing: Kyle, could you also look into different kinds of meditation for us. I don’t understand enough about it. Maybe we need some classes, or we can learn together? That probably would be good for us too. What do you think, would that help us?”

Max’s request made Kyle feel proud and accepted. They had had quite a few differences for a long time, but now it seemed like Max really accepted him and even needed his help. Looking seriously first at Max, then at everybody else in the group he answered, “Absolutely, meditation helps a lot and everybody can learn it. I’ll look into it.”

”Are we finally done with the meeting?” Maria wanted to know. With this question the meeting ended and everybody started to get comfortable. They turned to the leftovers from the picnic and applied themselves to finishing them with great eagerness. With their stomachs full, their attention moved to everything they had learned at this meeting. As their mood became more and more reflective, they calmed and the sound of the night could be heard.

Hello everybody, I hope you all had a good start into the new year!!!!

04, We can’t be pregnant, can we? 06/30/2000 AN: this part has some strong language
Over the next two weeks everybody was busy with school, work and seriously thinking about all the problems they had in their lives. Kyle was able to find a self-defense class where the coach agreed to give them a special price since all six teens decided to take it and Jim would join them whenever possible. They learned all kinds of tricks to defend themselves and actually had a lot of fun fighting with each other. Even Michael was heard to laugh a time or two.

Together they went jogging several times a week and in a relatively short time they could feel a difference in their physical fitness. They became more athletic and they built up their athletic stamina. They started to take pride in their achievements. To Maria’s surprise she discovered that she actually liked sports, especially since her body got tougher and more defined. She decided that now she was “a hot babe!” and started to dress accordingly, showing off her bare midriff and well-defined legs.
*~~*~~*~~*~~*~~*~~*
Max and Liz spent every possible moment together, enjoying their new closeness. After the scare they had after their first lovemaking, they took great care in using additional protection in form of condoms, since they weren’t sure if the pill would work. With each time they had sex, quickies or not, it became more and more difficult for them to stay apart.

The eraser-room was finally serving one of its purposes. With each time the urge to mate grew stronger, until it reached embarrassing proportions. They could barely keep their hands (among other body-parts) to themselves.

Their friends often couldn’t believe how these two normally shy and very private people suddenly were all over each other in the most public places. It was pure luck they never got caught by any teachers or parental units. Maria developed the talent of a track hound and managed to barge in on the lovebirds at the most ill-timed moments. Even Isabelle was heard complaining on several occasions of being incurably damaged by the pictures that had been burned into her brain!

After a while Max and Liz developed a driving need to be with each other in the chamber of the Granolith. Somehow everything seemed to be more intense, their feelings heightened and they felt safe and protected. One time Max even brought a stash of condoms and hid them in his pod in the pod chamber “just to be on the safe side” he mumbled.

On awaking one morning, after an especially intensive night of loving, they just knew (the split condom was also a good indication) that their luck had run out. They were pregnant! Amazingly enough at the very first moment of realization, they weren’t worried. The two of them were just astonished. Cocooned in their sleeping bag, they let the baby news sink in and were delighted by the feelings that were released. The connections they shared grew to an intensity they never thought possible. They couldn’t tell where one began and the other one ended. Max, Liz and the baby were truly one.

“Just imagine Max, if we were both human we wouldn’t know about this pregnancy for at least another two weeks and we couldn’t feel them at all!” Liz mused, awed by all these new emotions that were flooding through her.

“Oh boy, who do you think is going to kill us first, your parents, my parents or Michael?” Max’s whispered questions broke the silence.

“Most definitely Michael, then my dad will go and buy a shotgun to come after you! Your father on the other hand will accuse me of having lost my moral values, he’ll be convinced that I seduced his poor and unsuspecting son. Of course I will be ruining your promising future! Your parents will hate me; you know that, don’t you?” Liz paused for a moment and then continued, “I think that after the initial shock Maria, the sheriff and Kyle will be ok and support us. Isabelle probably too, she’ll love being an aunt. Michael most definitely will be out for blood, especially mine!”

Taking a deep breath Liz went on “I’m not really sure how my mom will react. Usually she supports my dad, but she’s also the more reasonable one of my parents. And when I least expect it, she can really surprise me.”

Overwhelmed, Liz sniffled and her voice started to brake “I really hope my mom will accept our baby, because I’m really going to need her!” and with that said she gave in to a flood of tears.

“Hey Liz, baby, no matter what happens you know that I will always be at your side, ok? Not because I have to, but because I want to. I love you and together we will find a way. I see our friend’s reaction the same way you do. With the parents we just have to wait and hope for the best!” Thoughtfully he looked at Liz and went on “I think that before talking to our parents, we best start to come up with solutions about our schooling situations and about work, to show them that we are serious.”

He stopped to think for a moment and then proceeded “My mom will help us, of that I’m pretty sure. My dad will be very disappointed and make a big scene, after that I honestly don’t know. It will depend on how much my mom can influence him. In any case we need to have some idea about how we will go on, you know, show them that we are responsible and willing to do what we have to do!”

After a moment Liz dried her tears and started to plan their next moves “I think first we should talk with the sheriff, see what he has to say. Then we will need another meeting with all our friends, maybe we can meet at Michael’s.”

“Yeah, this sounds about right. First the sheriff, then all our friends. Then we’ll know who we can count on, because we most definitely can’t have babysitters, so we will need all the help from our friends that we can get” Max agreed.

Still considering their options, Max remembered something else “also, I have a college fund. We always had to put a third of all the money we received into it, also from what I earned at the UFO centre and our parents paid into it on a regular basis. If we go to ENMU here in Roswell, we might hopefully stay at one of our homes. We’ll have to present different solutions though. I’d say since we just got pregnant, we have about two months before we have to inform the parents, that’s not too bad, what do you think sweetheart?”

But Liz didn’t hear most of Max’s rambling, because she’d fallen asleep.

Meeting the sheriff at the station, 07/01/2000…
Jim was very curious; Max had called right after lunch, asking for a private meeting. Now he was waiting in his office for his young friend to come. After a hesitant knock on his office door, Max entered and was followed by Liz. They were standing before him like two kids in trouble. To ease the tension he welcomed them “Liz, Max, nice to see you both. Have a seat” he motioned to the chairs.

Nervously the kids sat down on the edge of the seats. He offered them something to drink and continued in a kind and quiet voice “So Max, on the phone you sounded very serious, tell me, how can I help?”

Max and Liz looked at each other, both reluctant to talk. But as agreed beforehand, Max began stammering “I em…, sheriff, …em, I just, oh boy this is difficult. Ok, sir, I’m just going to tell you outright, straight out, just, you know… point-black!” he looked to Liz for support and rushed out under his breath “Liz and I are pregnant!”

To say that the sheriff was shocked is an understatement. He had expected alien enemies on the doorstep, the dupes or even the FBI, but never in a million years did he expect this! He let the news sink in for a moment and when he looked from one teen to the other, he realised they were very apprehensive of his reaction. To help them calm down he spoke quietly “are you sure this is no false alarm?” seeing their shaking heads he went on “I know you both are very reliable and careful young people, so I don’t need to ask if you were using protection?” Both nodded affirmatively “Yeah, I thought so. I’m correct in assuming that this is somehow alien related, aren’t I?” again, nodding heads. “Have you talked to anyone else yet?” two shacking heads were his answer. “Ok, do you have any idea of what you will do?” Shrugging shoulders accompanied be wide-eyed stares were answer enough for the sheriff.

He decided to put some of their fears to rest and said “I’m on your side, I’ll help in any way I can. You need help telling your friends, your parents, you have it; I’ll be there. My home is small, but if necessary you can stay with us until we have a better solution. There is one condition though; I expect to be included in your little one’s life! Is that acceptable to both of you?”

This was more than Max or Liz had expected. They were stunned. After a moment Liz started to cry. Relieved she jumped up, ran around the desk and threw herself at Jim, hugging the stuffing out of him. Quick-witted he caught her and held her by her shaking shoulders. Awkwardly he patted her and murmured soothing nothings to stem the tears. After swallowing a few times, a surprised but dignified Max found his voice and thanked the sheriff for his help and kind words.

As the situation calmed they decided to call the meeting for that evening. Everybody was able to come and luckily enough there was no hockey game on TV to keep Michael away.
*~~*~~*~~*~~*~~*~~*
The meeting at Michael’s, 07/01/2000, evening…
By the time Max and Liz arrived with the sheriff in tow, everybody was assembled at Michael’s. Amidst a lot of grumbling on Michael’s part, they waited for yet another meeting to start. After one look at their leader and his lady, they all realized that something monumental had happened.

“What was so damn important that we needed to have another unplanned meeting? It better be…” Maria interrupted Michael and finished his sentence “good! We know all about your very important projects, Michael, so just shut up and give them a chance to explain whatever it is that they have to explain.” Reaching into her pocket, she grabbed her cedar-oil and with a grand show displayed it to Liz. Dryly, she added “as you can see I came prepared!” and finished her proclamation with a roll of her eyes.

Liz smiled feebly at her friend’s remarks and started very seriously “Something happened that we need to inform all of you about! We just found out ourselves and em… we need to know what you’re thinking about it! You’re probably going to hate us, but we can’t change it!” Her feelings concerning her babies were torn between ecstatically happy and “I’m far too young to be a mom!” So she avoided the word pregnant as long as she could because she felt that as long as it wasn’t said out loud, there was still a chance that it was just a dream!

Kyle was standing in the background listening and watching everybody. He noticed Michael getting all-uptight and tried to diffuse the situation by calming a very nervous Liz. Quietly he said “Liz, just tell us. You know that we’re used to all kinds of crazy things happening, so I’m sure it will be ok.”

After looking at each other for a moment, Liz and Max blurted out together “We’re pregnant!” and Max toped this statement with a rushed “it just happened, you know. We were really careful, we used protection, we really did, honestly, but it still just happened!” since by now, both of them were staring self-consciously at the floor, they didn’t see the stunned looks on their friends’ faces. They were all shocked into silence.

Michael was the first to recover and since he only listened to half of the announcement, he erupted ”What the hell is wrong with you? Since when are you so irresponsible?! That’s usually my job! Anyway, if you can’t keep your energy-source in your pants, can’t you at least use protection, you know, a condom? But nooo, Max doesn’t need that; instead you knock up every girl you fuck?”

Michael’s irrational outburst couldn’t be stopped; on the contrary, he worked himself into a good old rage, conveniently forgetting all they had learned before. “One would think that you’ve learned your lesson after Tess. You fucked the bitch once, and bingo, she had a brat in the oven! Now this! You’re endangering us, all of us! Do you know what this pregnancy will do to Liz? Did you ever stop to think about that?”

Max tried to interrupt his friend’s ranting unsuccessfully “Michael, will you stop ranting about things you have obviously forgotten already? Just let me repeat everything to you!”

“I don’t have to listened to your shit, Maxwell, you fuck’em and you knock’em up! You’re thinking with the wrong head Maxwell!!”

“Michael shut up! You don’t have to be so insulting and crude?” Max hated it when his friend was in one of his moods, and lately it seemed he always was. He tried one more time to reason with Michael “first you conveniently forget the “Tess-facts” and then you don’t listen when we explain! So, let me tell you!…”

“Save your breath, Max! I have news for you; I have all the facts that I need. As usual you don’t think of anybody but yourself and Liz, the rest of us be damned! But I’m surprised that Liz is behaving that way too!” and he threw some accusing looks towards Liz.

While Max was butting heads with Michael, Liz relocated with the others to the bedroom. This way she could talk to them without any interruptions. Since they were still in shock Liz used their silence to recount the facts as she knew them “Like I said, we’re starting a family and to be honest with you, we’re both petrified.”

Furiously blushing she avoided any kind of eye contact and continued “I mean, never in a million years did we think we could get pregnant because we were very careful, you know? But in the morning we woke up and just knew, it was really amazing, we could hardly believe it.”

“I bet you could hardly believe it, I’d feel the same way” Maria finally found her voice again after sniffing on her cedar-oil. She was the first to recover and started to bombard her friend “Liz, aren’t you on the pill? Did you forget to take it? What about condoms, why weren’t you using those? And are you going to be ok with an alien pregnancy?”

“Hey, Maria, chill, I’ve been on the pill for quite some time now, I didn’t forget to take it, and yes I checked and double checked the package, and on top of that we did use a condom, it just didn’t work. And yesss, I’m going to be fine, we just don’t know any details yet.”

“But Liz, you’re much too young to have a child,” said Maria. “Actually make that two” Liz inserted. “Two? What do you mean when you say two?” Isabelle was quick to question Liz’s statement.

“Twins, I’m talking about twins, a girl and a boy!” Liz answered with a big and happy grin, and everybody could see just how happy she was with her unplanned pregnancy.

“Isn’t it much too soon to know that? Or did you miscalculate?” Kyle wanted to know “I thought we learned in school that the first sign of a pregnancy was a missed period. And that it takes a few months to be able find out the baby’s gender! You were in the same class with Maria and I, you must remember that!”

His dad spoke up “Kyle, I’m sure in this instance we can forget all we learned about pregnancies. We’ll just have to watch and learn and always be ready to help Liz and Max. I’m very confident, that if we all work together everything will be fine. And you know, you can always count on me, day or night, just call and I’ll be with you!”

With a chorus of “me too” from her friends and a very emotional group hug that included the sheriff, Liz started to feel more secure and confident in the outcome of her baby venture. This left only the parents to be informed.

After they had all offered Liz their help and support, they returned to the living room and found Michael sulking and ignoring Max. As the others entered the room, they heard Max say to Michael “when you’re ready to listen I will talk to again. Right now I’m just wasting my time!”

The girls walked to Max and hugged him, assuring him of their help, Kyle and the sheriff did the same, but of course with manly back-slaps. Michael wasn’t too happy to see how the rest of the group had accepted this situation so easily and wondered why the hell Max could fuck up big time and still everybody supported him. Life just wasn’t fair. *~~*~~*~~*~~*~~*~~*
A few weeks later on Liz’s balcony, 07/17/2000 evening…
Max and Liz were enjoying a relaxed evening. While he was reading a book, she mulled over their strange change in behavior the two of them had displayed lately. Liz had noticed a blatant difference in their love making. She realized that they didn’t feel this incredible pressure to have sex, the overwhelming need to be together. Now they still enjoyed their loving very much and at every opportunity presented, but the extreme pressure and need was gone.

The scientist in her wanted to find out the reason for this change, so she started to write a list “before and after conception”. As she was evaluating her findings she came to a very shocking conclusion and exclaimed, “Oh my god! Oh my god! Oh my god! I don’t believe it!”

Max being Max was instantly worried, jumped to his feet, dropped the book and was at his sweetheart’s side. “Liz, what happened?” he wanted to know.

By now Liz didn’t know if she should laugh or cry and hiccupped, “we were in heat!”

“What? Say that again?” Max shouted.

Slowly, word for word, Liz repeated, “WE… WERE… IN… HEAT!”

Max looked at Liz and wondered if she had lost her mind. “What are you talking about?” he asked as quietly as he was capable.

For a moment Liz ignored his question and stared thoughtfully at the twinkling stars above. She pondered the significance of her strange findings and the more she thought about it the more confused she felt. She became conscious of the reason for this kind of “programming”; it was to ensure the continuation of the royal family of Antar. Obviously they tampered with their king’s DNS while he was in vitro.

That didn’t explain the exaggerated drive to mate that she had been displaying for a while. She needed some time to figure it out, but after some thought she came to the conclusion that the Granolith had influenced her. The more she thought about this, the more she knew it to be true. She was displeased with the arrogant way the Granolith robbed her of her own free will. She didn’t know if she should feel insulted or not and wondered what the feminists would say about that.

Quietly Liz explained the results of her evaluation. She was beyond embarrassed, as she had to admit that in her opinion both of them had been manipulated. That even if they had done things differently, the results would still be the same. They would be expecting their twins. The only thing she couldn’t figure out was, if this process had started with Max healing her, or later, when their feelings for each other were leading them to physically act on them.

05, Invitation to the summit, 07/26/2000 evening
Things seemed to wind down and the teens had time to bring their junior high school year to an end. They were still working, training and meditating together. Liz was also in training but started to take things a little easier. Any spare moments Max and Liz had, they spent together, going over their options, planning their immediate future. They made inquiries into schooling, financial support, housing and living costs. Liz found herself creating list after list to compare and figure out the best way to go.
*~~*~~*~~*~~*~~*~~*
On an unusually quiet afternoon shift Maria and Liz were sitting in the group’s favourite booth towards the back of the diner, taking a break, when Max and Isabelle joined them. As soon as Michael saw his alien friends sitting in the booth with the human girls, he decided to spend some time with them too. This way he could keep an eye on Liz, just to be sure she wouldn’t try anything suspicious.

They were bored and couldn’t decide on how to spend the evening. The girls wanted to see the newest chick flick, the guys didn’t. The guys wanted to watch a football game, the girls didn’t. In the midst of their good-natured bickering Kyle showed up and put in his idea of fun, watching some porn movie. The girls were grossed out by that suggestion and with an unmistakable “eeewwww, Kyle, gross!!!!” they declined.

Max found the idea of watching porn not too bad, but he remembered that his sister would be present too. Now that he found very, very disturbing, so he, most definitely, was against it too. Michael was against it too, chiefly because, you never knew what kind of ideas it would give those two horn-dogs!

So their cheerful bickering continued. On one thing they all agreed, it was nice and quiet, no Czech business disturbing the peace. Succinctly, Kyle summed it up “isn’t it nice to bored?“
*~~*~~*~~*~~*~~*~~*
So far Liz wasn’t suffering from too many pregnancy symptoms: she didn’t have any morning sickness and her hormones weren’t acting up too often. She just started having the strangest cravings though! There were times where the food couldn’t be sour or bitter or sweet enough, it always depended on her mood of the moment. The only new habit she had developed was the steadily increasing usage of Tabasco Sauce. By now she used so much of it that even the Czech’s were staring at her. Her Tabasco craving was quite difficult to hide around her parents, so she started carrying those little bottles in all of her pockets, handbags and in the book-bag she used for school. Her friends all helped her with the hot sauce supply too. Max and Kyle were the first ones to start with it and after a while everybody, with the exception of Michael carried them around. Poor Liz had to listen to a lot of jokes at her expense.
*~~*~~*~~*~~*~~*~~*
Invitation to the summit, 07/26/2000 evening…
One evening, a few weeks after they had found out about the pregnancy, they were cuddling on one of the deckchairs on Liz’s balcony, as Mrs. Parker announced Brody’s arrival. Since Brody wasn’t usually visiting, both teens were instantly on alert. “Brody, what happened? Is everything ok?” Max asked concerned.

But the moment Brody bowed to Max they knew that Larek possessed their friend’s body. “Your highness, I come on an official errand. I have been chosen to deliver you an invitation to the next intergalactic summit.”

“What, I have to go to New York again! Forget it, that’s out of the question, absolutely no way am I going to New York!” Max vehemently refused but Liz squeezed his arm and stopped his tirade effectively.

She telepathed him **don’t you think you should let him say everything he has to say? You know, hear what they want? This time they all know who has the Granolith, so maybe this brings a shift of alliances!**

Max paused for a moment, reflecting on his girlfriend’s words **you’re right, I should have listened better. I just heard summit and that was it. I remembered the last one and didn’t want a repeat of it, I’m sorry! I just don’t want to leave right now, you know?** **You’re thinking about the babies, I know, but we’re still early in the pregnancy, we have time. So if you have to go, I will have enough people here to help me. I won’t like it, but I think you should stay open-minded, see what Larek has to say!** Max gave Liz a smile and turned to Larek.

Larek curiously observed the king and his lady; obviously there was some kind of communication going on between the two. After a moment Max visibly relaxed and addressed his alien friend, smiling bashfully “Sorry Larek, this all is a very sore subject to us and right now I really don’t want to leave, unless it is absolutely essential. So, why don’t you tell me more about this summit, please?”

Smiling graciously Liz interrupted “Larek, before we start, why don’t you take a seat and relax a bit. We don’t stand on any kind of protocol here.” “Thank you Liz, you’re very kind.” With that he sat down on the other deckchair.

When he was comfortable, he addressed Max again “Max, this summit has been called by the leaders of the Whirlwind Galaxy. Of course, at first, Khivar was against it, but he has relented. I guess he’s thinking of ways to best us all. At the moment we all want big changes. We want peace in our Galaxy, which means on all five planets. The other leaders have had a lot of time to think about all the changes you wanted to bring before the revolution, before Khivar. Then they believed the lies that Khivar spread, now they know differently. This summit will be special; we want to hold it in the sacred chambers of the Granolith.”

“But Larek, with all due respect, I can’t let Khivar into the chamber of the Granolith, that’s just impossible. I hope you understand that.” Max cut in.

“I understand that Max, but that’s not where this is. You will have to go to the Granolith, it will let you know what to do, but you are the only one, with your queen’s help, to order the summit and ask the Granolith to grant us his favour and supervise it. We all are very serious and determined to bring peace and prosperity to our homes. We are prepared to stand up to Khivar. We also know for this to happen, we need you and the help of the Granolith.”

Max was confused and replied “But Larek, I really have no idea what you’re talking about. When everything is said and done, I’m really just a high school kid. I have only just turned eighteen, you know. Granted my memories have started to come back, but I have no knowledge about the state of affairs on Antar and the Whirlwind Galaxy. Also, all I know about politics I know from some books I read and what we learned in school. I don’t think I’m mature or responsible enough to take charge of such big responsibilities yet.”

Larek listened intently to Max’s words and smiled sadly “I know my friend, when you talk like that, you remind me of my old friend Zan in his younger days. He always worried about everything too!”

After discreetly clearing his throat he continued, “the Members from the Council of Elders of the holy order of the Granolith came to see me. They said the time was here for the prophecy to be fulfilled. The rightful king has chosen his Queen and is now ready to reclaim his birthright, the throne of Antar. As the Highest Ruler of the Whirlwind Galaxy he will bring us peace and prosperity.”

Taking pity on Max’s shocked expression, Larek gently added, “They understand your situation, but they said that you would get all the help from the Granolith. Also all the leaders are prepared to help you in any way you need.”

Max was quite shaken and reflected very carefully about all the information Larek had given. Finally he asked, “can we believe them? Or is it just another plot from Khivar to get his paws on the Granolith? Larek, are you absolutely sure they’re trustworthy? Because I haven’t met them in this life so I don’t know them. My memories are coming back little by little, and not always in a chronological order. That can be quite confusing, so I have to be able to rely on you, my friend!”

As an afterthought he added “What is there to stop Khivar from attacking us at this summit? I mean he could get rid of us at one fell swoop!”

“Well Max, you see, with the summit located in the sacred chambers of the Granolith, we will automatically be protected. There’s no way that Khivar could pull a stunt like that. Also, if you ask the Granolith for guidance and support, we will always know who the honest members are. Traitors will be exposed, he does that quietly and only to the king, his keeper, if present, and to all the participants he has accepted as honourable leaders.”

Max and Liz had known only small parts of this, and Larek was putting together all the pieces, leaving them speechless. “Larek, why was a revolution possible, if Zan had the Granolith’s help at his disposal?” Liz wanted to know.

“Because the majority of the people in power had become corrupt and ignored all the warnings from the Elders. And then the king, Zan’s father, was assassinated and all hell broke loose. Zan was too young and inexperienced to lead. Of course it was much more complicated than that, but I don’t have much more time. I have to return this body, or it will be damaged.” Upon seeing the teens’ worried frowns he reassured them quickly “you don’t have to worry, I will make sure he doesn’t suffer any ill effects afterwards.”

Max abruptly changed the subject to hurry the discussion along “So, can you explain to us how we all get to this chamber? If it’s not here, where is it?” “It’s nowhere really, every planet of the Whirlwind Galaxy, has a special, secret room where only the invited members of the summit can go to. From there the Granolith transports them securely to the meeting chamber. Everybody is protected from the moment they enter the room until they are brought back after the meeting. And Max, at the moment you are the only one who can bring this about, activate it.”

Max digested this information and wanted to know a few more details “Ok, I can’t decide this right this moment. I will have to talk this through with our friends. But I need to know when it will be, and I guess I’ll bring Michael, uhm …Rath, along! Also how long will we have to be there, and in case of an emergency how can I be reached?” “Since you’re the last one to hear about the summit, we decided to let you chose the time, but it has to be as soon as possible. If your friends need to reach you, the Granolith will do this for you, it will let you know how to do this. As to how long we will be there, I don’t know, Khivar usually likes to keep us waiting for days at least. We decided to ignore him this time. We would like to take a day or so to get reacquainted with you and after that we start the official meetings. He’ll send some delegates anyway for the beginning.” With a determined glint in his eyes he finished “That bastard will get some big surprises this time. He won’t know what hit him.”

“Larek, I will think about the summit and I will talk with Liz and the others too see what they think about all this. The timing is not the best right now. Anyway, I will let you know when you come next time, just give me three days to think about everything.”

Larek said his goodbyes and turned to go. By the door he hesitated for a moment, turned around and addressed Max one more time “Max, I hope you don’t think me too forward, but I honestly think that you shouldn’t bring Michael along. Granted, I don’t know him very well, but from what I’ve observed so far, he treats his friends really shabbily, but what is even worse, he disrespects and insults you in front of others. I know he’s your friend, but if he did that at the summit, you would have to punish him or you would loose the respect of the other members. If you don’t, they won’t take you seriously anymore. Also he seems very unpredictable and bad mannered and I honestly don’t know if he would insult any of the other leaders or not, but the risks, if he should, are great because they may demand severe punishment for him.”

Larek stopped, searching for words to explain the situation “You know Max, in the ways of technology and science we are so much more advanced than you earthlings, but socially we are very much behind you, at least Khivar and his people are very archaic. The others are more open and ready to accept new ways, but they all expect utmost respect. People have been executed for not showing enough respect. I don’t mean to scare you, you know, but as long as you’re honest and respectful you’ll do all right. So please my friend, think carefully about what you do with your second!”
*~~*~~*~~*~~*~~*~~*
Later that night at Jim Valenti’s home…
Max was in a big quandary. He was seriously thinking about Larek’s piece of advice concerning Michael. Realistically he knew his alien friend was right, Michael was out of control. And since Liz’s pregnancy, it had gotten much worse He was rude, even hurtful to Liz and the other humans in the group. Of course a lot of his scorn was directed towards Max and he was getting sick and tired of always being called “fearless leader” in such a condescending and insulting manner.

The only ones in the group that Michael treated with some kind of politeness were the sheriff and Isabelle. Emotionally he felt for Michael, because he knew how important all things Antarian were for him. So he was very glad that the sheriff had agreed to give him some advice. Right now he was waiting outside the Valentis’ door for somebody to answer his knocking. After a moment he was able to hear someone coming closer and opening the door.

Luckily Jim Valenti answered the door himself. For the moment Max wanted to keep this discussion private, at least until he had made up his mind about the next steps he had to take. “Hi sheriff, thanks for seeing me on such short notice.” Smiling politely Max added, “a big problem has come up, nothing bad mind you, but big and difficult nonetheless!”

“Hi Max, it’s ok, you know I like to help you in any way I can and you sounded really urgent. So come in, take a seat and tell me what this is all about!” graciously Valenti invited Max into his home.

“Well tonight Liz and I had a visitor; Larek to be precise. He came to invite me to an intergalactic summit. This time it’s not in New York, but in a special place that is protected by the Granolith. When I know more I’ll tell you all about it, ok?”

Max looked openly at his older friend, to convey his sincerity. It was important to the alien king to let Jim know that he wasn’t keeping any secrets; at this stage he really didn’t know anything else. Giving Jim more details he continued “Larek said that since the leaders of the Whirlwind Galaxy heard that the Granolith was with me, they all started to think about bringing on big changes; like getting rid of Khivar and bringing peace back to their homes. Since at the moment I’m the only one who has the seal to activate and interact with the Granolith, they need my help. At the moment there will be just talks, sort of like taking stock of the situation and finding solutions.”

The Sheriff could tell Max’s distress reached a higher level and he realised that whatever he had to say was very difficult for his young friend, but Jim asked him to continue. So Max, after a few seconds, continued to convey Larek’s advice concerning Michael. Sighing deeply he added “so sir, you see my dilemma, don’t you?”

During Max’s speech the sheriff began to comprehend the magnitude of the problems his young friend had to deal with. And the big problem that Michael represented was indeed small compared to the rest of what he had just been told. He laughed abruptly “oh boy, you sure don’t do easy, do you? I can see where you’re coming from, I really can Max.”

Smiling sadly Jim added, “Michael seems to have a lot of resentment stored up. He doesn’t accept advice or help from his friends and I’m sure as hell he won’t take classes in protocol and good manners! I’m assuming you and Liz already had a long talk about this, didn’t you?” As Max confirmed this with a nod, the sheriff continued “So, let me think about this for a moment.“

Jim left Max alone and retreated to his office for some undisturbed time to reflect on the problem called Michael. He realised that there wasn’t much they could do since they didn’t have time to work with Michael. Anyway, he’d have to be willing to learn, and that was something that Jim doubted very much. Lately Michael had been one royal pain in the ass and he seemed to cultivate it. He could look at Michael any way he wanted and he would always see the same.

With a heavy heart the sheriff returned to the living room to a nervously waiting Max. “Max, since time is a luxury you don’t have, you don’t have many options. The way I see it, you have to talk to Michael in private, explain the situation to him and ask his opinion on it. After that, you will have to call several meetings with everybody present. If he shows more respect towards everybody and refrains from throwing insults if things don’t go the way he wants, you’ll know that at least he knows how to behave. Honestly, I don’t know how long he could keep up a polite front, you know.”

Jim regretted the next thing he was going to say, but he just didn’t see any way around it “my honest opinion on this is is that you will have to leave him behind. Too much rides on this summit and you can’t get distracted second-guessing his actions all the time. You won’t concentrate on the meetings.”

Glad that the sheriff came to the same conclusion as Liz and himself, he said, “That’s what Liz and I came up with too. I just hate to do that to him. You know how Michael always wanted to know more about our past.”

Sadly Max was almost convinced that he would have to leave Michael behind. He was sure only a miracle could help his second to change his attitude, and miracles just didn’t happened too often. So Max agreed with the sheriff and added “Liz said that he couldn’t always use his childhood as an excuse for bad behaviour. He’s been on his own for some time now and in our group nobody else behaves this way. In fact, we all have always treated him with respect and trust. But he blatantly insults us and still distrusts us, especially the humans.”

Sighing deeply he went on “it’s like he doesn’t want to, like he has all this pent up anger in him and he just lashes out at everybody. Also he is convinced that he’s never at fault. It’s always the others!”

Max seemed to sink deeper into the couch and looking lost and sad he continued “we were also wondering if Tess has been mindwarping him, since last summer she spent a lot of time with Michael working on his powers!”

Jim took a moment to think about this and had to agree, “I guess this is really a possibility you can’t discount. Do you know how you could find out if she did mess with his mind? And do you have enough time before you leave? I’m assuming you have to leave within the next week or so, don’t you?”

“I know” Max replied with frustration “the thing is, Michael would have to agree to us checking him out, and quite honestly I don’t know yet how we could undo any programming or mind-warps Tess might have treated him with. I will know in time because Zan’s memories are coming back to me, but I’m afraid there just isn’t enough time before the summit!”

Getting ready to take his leave, Max addressed the sheriff “Oh, well, thanks sheriff for listening and your advice. I’ll talk to Michael tomorrow morning. After lunch we’re having the first meeting about the summit. Will you come?”

“Max, I will be there, I promise, I will support any decisions of yours, ok? I’m just sorry that I couldn’t be more of a help!” Smiling his thanks Max gave Jim a wave and left to go home. His shoulders were drooping from the heavy load he carried.

hello everybody, it's Friday again, which means it's posting time    . This part is quite a bit shorter than usual, but that's just how it is.

I hope you enjoy reading my fic!

06, Restless, Wednesday 07/26/2000
In the meantime at the Reservation…

The night was pitch-black and quiet, not a breath of air was stirring on the reservation. Riverdog was feeling very restless and sleep was evading him. It was a special kind of restlessness, the kind where he just knew something important was about to happen. He had no idea what this was all about, but the urgency and intensity of his feelings led him to the sweat lodge. He had to ask for spiritual guidance.

As he prepared the fire to heat up the lodge and the herbs needed for the cleansing ritual, he began to sink into a state of meditation. Every movement had a special meaning, just as he had learned at his fathers’ knee. Reverently he prepared the bowl of water that he needed to drink during the ceremony. As the temperature in the lodge reached its peak, Riverdog shed his clothing and stripped down to his loincloth. After checking his preparations and finding them to his contentment, he sat down, closed his weary eyes and let his mind go blank.

The Great Spirit wasn’t about to be rushed and took his time to answer Riverdog’s call. At first, the great shaman couldn’t make any sense of the message he received.

He saw something of great beauty and power, something like he had never seen. It was shaped like a cone, very light and elegant in spite of its size. When it was resting, it was gleaming deep black like a polished onyx, but as soon as it started to transmit the message, it came to life with the most beautiful swirls of blues, pinks and greens surrounding it. It seemed to transmit it’s revelations in light, thoughts and pictures.

He could clearly recognize the big rock formation out in the desert and just as clearly he saw Eddy and Serena walking with him halfway up a trail on the side of that formation. And then he saw how the three of them were waiting, he didn’t know for what. Next he saw the pretty dark-haired girl from Roswell, the one with the eyes you could drown in. She needed his help, her arms were sparkling with green lights and she was pregnant. With her was the young visitor, the one who had passed his test. Another youth, and if he remembered correctly this was the sheriff’s son, stood with them, asking him for help and guidance. Next he saw Eddy, Serena and himself with all the teens, except the young visitor and some grown up people in the cave with this cone-like thing. All were staring at this thing with reverence and awe.

Coming out of his meditation he was confused, this vision was filled with strange meanings and Riverdog couldn’t make heads or tails of the message. But he realized that the plea the Valenti boy sent through his tribesman, a deputy in Roswell, for a meeting to learn of ways to help a special friend, was also tied up in this vision. All he was sure of was that whatever was coming was big and he better be prepared for it. He stayed in the lodge for a little longer, before searching out his bed to rest his old and weary bones. In the morning he would call Eddy and Serena. They had time, not much but enough, so right now he could take a much-needed rest! In the morning they had to meet and find out the meaning of all this.
*~~*~~*~~*~~*~~*~~*
Same night, same time in Eddy’s back yard…
The night was pitch-black and quiet, not a breath of air was stirring in Eddy’s back yard. He was feeling restless, something big was coming, and he could feel it. He knew to take these feelings seriously. He had learned to listen to his intuition. Riverdog had chosen him as his successor when he was just a young boy, and since then he had become the shaman’s shadow and confidant. Every waking moment he learned all there was to know about herbs, healing, nature, herbs, healing, and nature, as well as prophesies and how to interpret them, and how to listen to your spiritual guides. And right now he knew with absolute certainty that something big was coming. He missed his wife Serena. He needed her by his side. She helped him to stay levelheaded and grounded. Serena balanced him.

Due to the heat, Eddy was sleeping outside in his back yard. He was sleeping restlessly, having strange dreams of things to come. He saw this cone-like thing in a cave and he couldn’t figure out what it was or what it did. But one thing he knew for sure: It was very powerful and of great importance.

He saw the pretty girl from the CrashDown, her name was Liz; she needed their help. Her arms were sparkling with green lights and she was pregnant. And he saw how Riverdog, Serena and he walked up the side of the rock formation out in the desert. The three of them with Liz and a lot of people, some he vaguely recognized, were standing around this cone like thing, staring and listening intently. He could feel the importance of it all and decided to call Serena in the morning and ask her to come home soon. Afterwards he would seek out his mentor Riverdog to discuss these dreams.
*~~*~~*~~*~~*~~*~~*
Same night, same time in Las Cruzes…
The night was pitch-black and quiet, not a breath of air was stirring in Las Cruzes. Serena was feeling restless and suddenly she was hit with this urgency to return home. Home to Eddy, home to the reservation, home to her grandfather Riverdog. Something big was happening soon, she just knew it. It was driving her up the wall. To top it off she had had this very strange dream last night.

Now, after hastily packing up her few belongings and scribbling a note to her friends, she was in her old car speeding home. She was thankful for the light traffic and let her mind wander to her dream. She wasn’t quite sure but she thought it could have been a vision or premonition of some sort.

She had never seen anything like that beautiful cone that rose graciously in that cave. The colors were swirling around it and as she heard the message, it seemed like the brightest white light was bursting trough this thing. She needed to talk to her husband Eddy. She missed him. It was always difficult for her when she had to go to the city for any length of time and leave him behind. She was a country girl at heart.

Right now she was speeding home and was wondering who all those people in her dream were. She was sure she had never seen them, except the pretty dark-haired girl. She was sure to recognize her; she had been the one to come to the reservation to make inquiries about a pendant. Laughing quietly she remembered how Riverdog’s sudden appearance had scared the girl. And even though she was afraid of the old man who appeared so mysteriously, this girl stopped him, intent on getting answers. Serena could see that it was this girl who needed help. She had green lights flickering up and down her arms and she appeared to be pregnant. There was more to it, but she couldn’t solve this riddle. She needed to have a sit down with Eddy and her grandfather. After having reached this conclusion she started to feel better, the restlessness was fading slowly.

Hello everybody,
time really flies by and here I am again with another update. I hope you all like my story as much as I like writing it.

I think I have to explain my ‘Michael situation’ Even though I am a hardcore dreamer I actually like Michael too (you wouldn’t guess it, would you?). I really don’t know why he is so angry in this story. Every time I start to write a Michael scene it sort of writes itself this way, but never fear Michael-friends, he will be redeemed later, much, much later!

Anyway, I hope that my story will keep you guessing and curious enough to come back for more.

Kate * I’m glad you’re still here reading away. As to Michael's forgetting things; he seems to have a selectiv memory, when he gets angry he only remembers what suits him. Convinient, isn't it? You have some good ideas and questions, but as you know, wait and see...

lab6651 * thank you very much for your compliment, I appreciate very much. When I said ‘think of Michael in 'Who died and made you king', I just meant that he was very angry, unpredictable and uncontrollable and he’s a lot like that in my fic.

Lulù * I thank you too for your compliment, I’m grateful for it. I discovered that I really like writing, and I enjoy writing Max and Liz very much. Surprisingly enough it’s a lot of fun to write an angry Michael too.

And of course a very big thank you to my daughter Moira who is such a terrific beta.

07, Conflicts, Thursday morning 07/27/2000
After a sleepless night Max reluctantly went to see Michael. Luckily, being an alien, he didn’t need much sleep. As a result, instead of sleeping he tried to figure out ways of handling the “Michael situation”. He was planning and plotting but in the end he knew he just had to go there, say what he had to say, and hope for the best. So, here he was, right outside Michael’s apartment door, knocking hesitantly.

While he waited for his friend to let him in, Max gave himself a pep-talk. “Max, you can do this! You discussed it with Liz and with the sheriff, they both agree with you and back you up. You are doing the right thing. You just have to be strict, determined and decisive. Max you’re the king, the leader, all you have to do is lead.” Looking very lost and insecure he continued, “who am I kidding, no one believes this bullshit. Who am I to lead a planet, if I can’t talk to my friend about unpleasant things? They are counting on the wrong person, I’m no leader, and I’m just a kid!” Max talked himself into a frenzy.

Suddenly he felt Liz’s calming presence through their connection. **Max you worry too much. You will be a great leader and king, but right now you have to talk to Michael. He’ll probably be as difficult as he can possibly be, but that’s tough luck for him. Our time has run out, we can’t pander to his ego any longer. I have faith in you, we all do. Valenti is on your side too, don’t forget that.**

A worried smile flitted across Max’s lips, he knew she was right and having an open line to Liz made him feel better, therefore he replied honestly **I know Liz; I’m just chickening out here. He will be so mad and disappointed; he’ll be impossible to deal with afterwards. But you’re right; I’ll just march in there, tell him about the summit and then talk to him about his behaviour. I will listen to his side and then we’ll see how he acts in the next few days. I think I can do it this way, what do you think Liz?**

Liz really felt badly for Max, it just wasn’t fair that he had all these troubles thrown his way and on top of all that, he had to worry about his best friend too. She was glad they had this connection, because this way she was in a position to support him much better, and that was exactly what she did. **that’s the only way to go about it. I have faith in you. I know you can handle this situation. Do you want me to stay connected for a while?**

Thankful Max accepted her offer, **would you? That would help a lot, thanks babe! I’m going to knock on his door again, but this time I’ll knock like I’m on a mission; he won’t be able to overhear it! Ok babe, here we go and by the way I love you! I’ll see you later!** This time Max didn’t knock, no he was pounding on the door, very decisively and so loud he could have wakened the dead.

“Go away, leave me alone!” Michael yelled not too pleased at being woken up. Max ignored his bad-tempered friend’s yell for peace and quiet and repeatedly pounded on the door. “Jesus, who the hell is making all this fucking noise this early in the morning, don’t you know people are still sleeping?”

In his haste to see who that insistent knocker was, an angry Michael almost tore the door off its hinges. “Max, what the fuck are you doing here this early? Couldn’t you just have waited until a more reasonable time?” He glared at his friend and growled “make it quick, I want to go back to sleep!”

Max was starting to get pissed and found it difficult to stay calm, so he kept what he had to say short and simple “Michael, shut the fuck up and listen. We have some important business to talk about, and we best do it inside, don’t you think!” Max’s look left no doubt what kind of business he was talking about, so Michael reluctantly opened his door and let him in.

Thanks to Michael’s bitching Max was now mad enough to lose his polite demeanour. He figured if Michael could be an ass, so could he. Liz’s inserted comment **and what a beautiful kingly ass it is**put things in perspective for Max; namely, he didn’t want to be here and he really didn’t feel like having this discussion with Michael. Max raised his voice and declared “Michael, sit down and stop being such an ass! This is very important and I too have better things to do than to listen to you bitch and moan. The situation is too serious for me to give a shit about your sleep!”

This opening shocked the hell out of Michael; he wasn’t used to this kind of rough talk from his ever so polite leader. Sitting down he mocked, “Well then, do tell what’s so important, oh fearless leader! Did Liz break a fingernail? It has to be about Liz, otherwise you wouldn’t give a fig about it, I’m sure!”

“That’s it, I tried to be reasonable but with you there is no reasonable! So I’m just going to give it to you straight out, after that I’ll leave you to think about everything and this afternoon we have a big meeting were we can discuss all the details. Everybody has to be present, no excuses!” Before Michael could form a reply, Max yelled “shut up, I’m absolutely not interested in your opinion right now, so you can keep it to yourself. The first thing I want to know is what bug crawled up your ass, because since Tess left, you have been impossible. You treat everybody like shit, especially the humans and yes, more specifically Liz. This is not acceptable any longer. It’s time for you to learn some manners; you’re not at Hank’s any longer, so that excuse doesn’t count anymore. You want to be treated like an adult and be respected, then behave like one too and show some respect to our friends.”

Taking a calming breath, he continued, “Now, down to business, last night we had a visitor. Larek showed up at Liz’s. He came with an invitation to an intergalactic summit…”

“What, why the hell didn’t you call me, I’m your second, and it’s my right to be there.” Michael didn’t take the news of Larek’s visit well. He felt left out and took it as a personal affront.

“It was late and there was no reason…” Max began but was interrupted by an angry “No reason, no reason? Just who the hell do you think you are to make such a decision?”

Max straightened up and stated “Your king, Michael, that’s who you all insist I am! And since I’m your king, I’m also the first in command. Now, you mouthed of enough, I don’t want to hear anymore shit from you. I’ll say my piece and go.”

Max stared at Michael until he lowered his eyes. “The summit is for peace talks in the Whirlwind Galaxy; all the leaders will be present. I will pass on all the details at the meeting this afternoon.”

Taking a deep breath he started to address the most important point for Michael “the reason I came to you in private was that, against my better knowledge, I hoped you would be at least polite and ready to listen. But you can’t do polite, can you? Even Larek, on his few visits with us, realised this and he advised me to leave you behind and go to the summit by myself.”

Michael got ready to give some scathing answer but Max cut him short “I’m not done yet and I have no desire to listen to your insults. Anyway, Larek said, it would be too dangerous to bring you along because you’re rude, insulting, irrational, explosive and absolutely unreasonable and unreliable. Also, on some of the planets they have very archaic laws and if you insult one of the leaders they can demand the harshest punishment, like banishment or worse. If, at the meeting, you insult me in front of the others, I would have to punish you or become the laughingstock and lose all respect and credibility and we can’t have that, now, can we?”

Looking at a mutinous Michael he finished “Well, that’s all I have to say. Now I want you to think about everything I just told you and I hope you can come up with a believable and realistic solution, one that we can work with. Make no mistake Michael, if I have to, I will leave you behind. If you think you can behave properly, you best start to prove it right now. I can’t rely on your word any longer! You are too unpredictable. And since you keep telling me that I’m the leader and that I have to lead, I’m prepared to do just that and you might not like the outcome!”

He gave Michael one last look turned to leave and said “I seriously hope you will think about everything I have said and find a way to prove your sincerity because with this summit we’ve been thrown in to the big league; there’s no more room for mistakes or games. No room for any more ‘ooops I’m sorry, I didn’t mean it’! I’ll see you this afternoon at the Valentis’ at four!” With that said Max closed the door decisively behind him and left his second to his own devices.
*~~*~~*~~*~~*~~*~~*
Afternoon meeting at Valentis’, Thursday 07/27/2000…
As Jim expected the meeting to be long and stormy, he prepared plenty of drinks and snacks, hoping to keep the kids’ bellies full and their tempers somewhat subdued. A knock on the door announced the first arrivals. With one last checking glance over the prepared light meal he went to open the door.

They had all arrived together and were in high spirits, with the exception of a very sourly-looking Michael. He brought up the rear and was very impatiently pushing everybody inside. Jim noticed this and remarked to Max “it seems like he didn’t take your talk too well!”

“You could say that!” he quipped back. Seriously Max continued, “Jim, I really appreciate all your help and now you even let us have this meeting here, thank you!”

“Don’t worry, I’m just glad to be part of this alien madness, it brings some change to my otherwise boring life!” Chuckling at his own weak joke, the sheriff lead them all in the living room and offered them seats, snacks and drinks.

Fidgeting nervously Max remained if front of his motley crew, trying to find the best way to open the meeting. The group was all keyed up, realising that something had happened. Liz sat in the armchair beside Max, quietly keeping her connection to Max open, to give him as much support as possible. Maria, Kyle and Isabelle shared the couch, whispering amongst them, trying to find out what was going on. Jim was leaning against the wall behind Max to demonstrate his support. Michael stood behind the couch, giving off vibes of tension and suppressed anger.

“Ok everybody, first I want to apologise for this unplanned meeting. Thanks for showing up, I know some of you had to change your schedules around, and I know Jeff wasn’t too happy to find replacements for Liz and Maria!” he smiled gratefully at them. His gaze wandered to his sister and he added “Izzy, thank you for changing your plans on such a short notice. I know you had something planned!” Isabelle graciously accepted his apology with a regal nod.

Suddenly Max turned serious and businesslike and said, “anyway, late last night Liz and I had a visitor: Larek came by to invite me to a peace summit with all the rulers of the Whirlwind Galaxy.”

“Max you can’t go, this is too dangerous! We don’t know if they can be trusted!” Isabelle interrupted, worried for her brother.

Smiling mollifyingly at her Max said, “Chill Izzy, right now I’m just giving you all the information we have. Afterwards we’ll talk about it, ok?”

In response to her reluctant nod he continued, “In two days Larek will return for my answer. I know this doesn’t give us much time, that’s why I called this emergency meeting!”

“You won’t go to New York alone, will you? Not after they almost killed you there last time!” Maria wanted to know and was glad that Liz had reminded her to bring her cedar-oil along, because as early in the meeting as they were, she was already sniffing it nervously.

Michael cut in “Max, we already spoke about all of this. Since it has nothing to do with the humans, I suggest we go to my place, discuss it all and then we’ll tell them what they need to know. Right now we’re just wasting time!”

Incredulously, Max stared at the other alien, doubting what he was hearing. Michael’s impatient countenance changed his mind for him and he exploded “Michael, shut up, I don’t want to hear another word from you. We’re in a group, and we’ll discuss this in a group and try to find the best solution. So, either you let me say what I have to say and you listen and wait patiently until everybody has all the info, or you leave us alone and come back in an hour or two. You decide what you want to do, but stop being such an ass!” trying to calm down he inhaled and continued in a cool and controlled voice ”maybe you should think about the second part of the talk we had this morning, because right about now would be the ideal time to prove you heard and understood what I said!”

Everybody was shocked about Max’s outburst, but they also realised that he was growing into his role as their leader. They were staring at the power struggle taking place right in front of them. With one last look at a pissed Michael, Max picked up the conversation “No Maria, it won’t be in New York but in the sacred Chambers of the Granolith.”

After that statement he relayed all the information he had from Larek, excluding the remarks about Michael. He would share this information only if needed. As Max’s eyes wandered over his friends he realized they were all listening intently, practically hanging on his every word. He concluded his speech with “Larek will come in two days for an answer and everybody who wants to meet him is welcome. We’ll be on Liz’s balcony.”

“Wow, that’s a lot of information to take in! I just have to let it all sink in for a moment!” Everybody was laughing at Kyle’s outburst, but he persisted “No, no I’m serious; It’s huge, I mean, come on, did you ever expect this to happen at this time, while we’re still in high school? I mean, our king Max here is still a high school kid! We’re not supposed to have intergalactic peace talks and the like, we’re supposed to party, get drunk and have fun!” Turning his eyes heavenwards he kept on “Buddha help me, but I’m just a bit lost right now!”

Isabelle murmured “That I understand real well!” and raising her voice some, she went on “Max, I’m scared, what if they want us to go home? What will we do then? Is it possible that they’re trying to trick you in to going back?”

Maria hugged her distraught friend and helpfully waved her bottle of cedar-oil beneath Isabelle’s nose. “Hey babe, you don’t have to do anything you don’t want to do: Don’t worry, we won’t let them take you away, we have your back, ok?” turning a pleading look to the others she demanded, “We do have their backs, don’t we?” With serious faces they all nodded their agreement.

Clearing his throat Max reclaimed everybody’s attention “Liz and I both trust Larek and the Granolith. We believe that the time has come and that I have to go. We know for sure, that everybody at the meeting will be protected at all times. We will be protected from the moment we leave our homes until we return. The Granolith is granting us his complete support and is guiding me whenever I need help.”

“Max, how can you be so sure of this, we don’t even know what the Granolith is or what it can do?” Jim was worried, he just thought too much of the information was so vague and presented a big unknown. He couldn’t help himself, but he trusted hard facts more than vague feelings of unknown things.

“Sheriff, trust me, for some reason Liz and I have this connection with the Granolith. We get all the information we need as we need it. And right now I can tell you that soon, probably in a few weeks, we will get all the information we need from the Granolith.“

Chewing on some tortilla chips Max reflected on how to explain the workings of the Granolith to his friends. “As far as we understand it, the Granolith has been dormant for a very long time, but for some reason it is now activated. It’s also possible that it’s somehow connected with the babies and/or my reaching adulthood. The link with Liz is not very clear yet, maybe she has it because of the pregnancy. If that’s the case, we don’t know if she will stay connected. There are some prophesies around it too. Liz and I both know that this is all very vague right now, but it would be much too overwhelming to get all the information at once. There will be some sort of initiation at some point soon and after that all knowledge will be at our disposal. But now we have to prove our patience and trust and for some reason both Liz and I know we can truly rely on it.”

Kyle had been quiet for a while but felt the need to impart some of his wisdom “hey, el Presidente, I for one have a good feeling about this. I listened to my inner voice and I have come to the conclusion that I can put all my trust in you and Liz. I can sense that you have a strong connection between the two of you, your babies and some very positive and extremely strong energy. I guess that would be the Granolith.” Taking a deep breath he looked Max straight in the eye and sincerely continued, “Max, Liz, you both have my unwavering support and loyalty.”

Looking around at everybody he noticed that they were all staring at him incredulously. Feeling like he was under a microscope, he started to squirm uncomfortably. Maria and Isabelle stared at him, like he had lost his mind, but Liz sent him a grateful smile.

Max was shocked. Since Kyle usually liked to rile him, he wasn’t sure how serious he was.

Jim’s heart was in danger of exploding, he was hit with a wave of love and pride in Kyle; he was sure he was going to embarrass himself by crying. He grabbed his handkerchief and noisily blew his nose.

Not sure of how to continue, Kyle started to stammer “umm, well, you know, umm, well it’s true. Can’t you feel it? Just look at them!” he pointed his fingers at Max and Liz and suddenly he became serious and very sure of what to say, “It’s true, nobody really knows anything about the Granolith or about your past lives on Antar. It’s also true that Liz and Max have this deep connection with each other and now with their babies too. It’s also true that all of us have witnessed the changes in those two. They are stronger than ever and most definitely stronger than the rest of us. Another fact we have all witnessed is that both of them have allowed visions, intuitions and feelings to lead them, and every time we thought they were crazy but they turned out to be right.”

Taking a deep breath he went on “Max, I have a feeling that you won’t have a choice in this matter. You must go to this summit. Any help you need, let me know and you have it. Also, I promise you that I will watch out for Liz and your babies. You won’t have to worry about them.”

Smiling seriously at Max he said, “We both know we had our differences but I have come to know you pretty well Max. I know you’re a decent, honest and sincere man; you do what’s right. So, I have come to the conclusion that starting now, if I don’t agree with you on any decision or whatever, I will let you know, tell you my opinion, but ultimately I will accept and support your decisions, no matter what, because you da man!”

After Kyle’s speech everybody was shocked into silence. Liz reacted first and jumped up to hug her friend. They had come a long way together. Maria’s eyes were flooded with tears as she went to add her hug to Liz’s. Isabelle sat there smiling proudly at her friends.

Jim walked up to a stunned Max, slapped him on his shoulders and with a nod in Kyle’s direction seriously said, “What he said goes for me too. I couldn’t have said it any better.” After that declaration there was no holding the girls back. They left Kyle and went to Max to pull him into a group hug.

“You da man Max! That goes for me too. Of course Lizzy here still is my first priority, but I promise you, you have my support and all that stuff he said. You know, Kyle’s right, we all saw the changes in you!” With that Maria gave him an extra squeeze, kissed his cheek and let Izzy take over. “Max, you can’t imagine how proud I am of you right now. I’m almost bursting with it. What Kyle said goes for me to! We all will ensure Liz’s safety, make sure she and the babies are all right. You won’t have to worry.”

Realizing everybody was staring at him, Michael looked at Max and added a very sourly “Yea, what ever they said!” He wasn’t too sure of what to do, so he stayed where he was, watching Kyle carefully. He started to feel threatened by him. Jealousy started to rear its ugly head as he wondered if Kyle was trying to take over his position as Max’s second. No jock was taking his place, he, Michael, would make sure of that!

After the tumult calmed down Max knew he had to pick up the discussion again. He was overwhelmed by all the support he received. He was standing there with Liz in his arms and holding on to her for dear life. In some way the unwavering trust his friends gave him was a big relief and comfort but then again it added to his burden.

With telltale shining eyes and bright red ears, he picked up the talk where they had left off “Wow, I don’t know what to say! I’m really overwhelmed. Thank you all for your support. You don’t know what this means to me!” he paused for a moment to look at all his friends. Collecting his thoughts he went on “So, if I understand correctly, you all think that I have to go to the summit.” At everybody’s nod he continued, “as much as I hate it, but Liz and I came to the same conclusion.”

08, Friendship on the rocks, Saturday 08/08/2000
Liz and Max were really glad that their friends gave them a lot of private time before he had to leave. The group would meet on a daily basis and spend some quality time together. They felt the burden of Max’s vague summit plans keenly.

Larek came by a few times and tried to assure them of their king’s security and told them of the Granolith’s rules for the summit. Also he reassured them of his and the other rulers’ help and support for Max. With the exception of Michael every group member came to trust and believe Larek.

The closer Max’s departure moved, the quieter the kids became. Michael brought his level of paranoia to new heights. He shadowed his friend’s every step, he called him at all times and checked Max’s bedroom on a nightly basis, making sure his king was where he was supposed to be.

Max lost his patience and ordered Michael to leave him alone. This angered Michael very much and of course he blamed Liz for everything. Suddenly he started to keep his distance, only meeting with Max when the group was present. He avoided Liz completely, except at work where he treated her with cold indifference.

After a while Max and Liz noticed that Michael was still following them, he was just more discreet about it. Seeing him at the most unlikely places tipped them off. They decided to ignore it as long as it didn’t get worse because there was enough bad blood between them already.

On the second-to-last day before the summit Liz and Max were visiting a baby store, when Max saw Michael hiding behind a shelf. Enough was enough; Max sneaked up behind him and confronted a very surprised Michael. “Michael, what are you doing here? I don’t think this is the kind of shop you’d frequent? Are you still spying on us?”

Shocked at being found out, Michael denied outraged “What, of course not, why would you think that?”

“Hmm, I don’t know, maybe because you keep popping up at the most unlikely places, like a baby store? Or when Liz and I are out in the desert? Or when we’re at the movies, watching a chick-flick? Or do you think we’re just paranoid?” Max inquired innocently.

Michael sputtered “well I was just hanging around the mall, browsing through some shops, when I saw you two heading towards this place. I figured this would be a good chance to see what kind of things you’re looking at. You know, for when the time comes I ‘d know what kind of present to get!”

Since Michael was looking everywhere else but at Max or Liz they knew he was lying. Incredulously Liz arched her eyebrows until they almost disappeared in her hairline and remarked “You? In a mall? Michael, this is the place you despise, the last place you’d visit willingly! In fact you said yourself that spending time at the mall is wasting time!”

Max picked up “Let’s presume I believed you Michael, how come you were at all the other places at the same time as us? Places that you would never visit?” Looking at his friend Max supposed “we would have to be really stupid to believe in coincidences, at least in so many in just a few days!”

Sullenly, Michael replied, “there is no point in saying anything because you wouldn’t believe me.” Pointing at Liz, he rudely said, “You only listen to her anyway, so what’s the point?” with that said he turned and stomped off, leaving the other two staring after him.
*~~*~~*
”Max, have you been able to talk to Michael about the summit?” Liz wanted to know.

Sighing deeply he replied sadly, “no, every time I approach him, he says he has no time or he suddenly disappears! But this, you know, just now, decided things for me. Tonight I will tell him that he has to stay behind.” Max realised how upset Michael would be, but the risks where just too great. They had lost their pleasure at window-shopping and decided to head on home.
*~~*~~*
As they reached the jeep, Max walked Liz to her side and helped her inside. While assisting her with one hand, he supported himself with the other one on the side of the windshield. At this moment he got a vision of Michael hiding a listening device in the car under the dashboard. Since Max still held onto Liz she saw it too.

They realised it was the same one Nasedo had planted in Michael’s apartment, before they had had the misfortune to meet Ed and Tess Harding. Shocked and speechless they stared at each other. They felt deeply betrayed by their friend. **Don’t say anything about this just now, we’ll talk later, ok?** Max telepathed and in answer she just nodded.

Liz figured she could use this opportunity and let Michael know what she thought of him ”Max, why do you think Michael has become so irrational and unreliable? I mean, he doesn’t say anything unless he absolutely has to, and when he speaks he’s rude and hurtful. I can feel his hatred for me, he holds me responsible for everything that goes wrong in his life. And now he is spying on us, just popping up everywhere we are.”

Laughing she added, “Michael in a baby store, no one is going to believe that one.”

Max started to chuckle and answered “I know, it was just so funny, he was very uncomfortable in there. Kyle will have a field day with that one; he won’t let Michael forget this episode for a very long time!”

Turning serious he chewed over his second’s behaviour and said “you know, I just don’t understand him anymore. The sad part is, right now I don’t know how far I can trust him. He says one thing and does the opposite. And then the way he treats everybody, especially you and the other humans, that’s just not acceptable. I don’t know how to approach him anymore.”

After starting the jeep, Max drove off the parking lot and turned towards the CrashDown. Some time later, he picked up the conversation, saying “he reminds me of how I was before Tess left. I was a complete ass and alienated everybody. I was unreasonable, irrational and extremely controlling. I had big fights with you and Isabelle.”

Remembering those times he added “I was a complete ass. That’s how Michael is right now, except he’s worse than I ever was. Also, the times are different now. Tess, the manipulating bitch, is gone. I talked with everybody, apologised for my behaviour and I have tried really hard to drop my controlling impulses. Everybody, especially you and Izzy, has forgiven me. The way Michael behaves makes me think the bitch messed with his brains big time. Otherwise I have no explanation for his conduct!”

“I’ve been thinking the same thing, but I don’t know if Tess is the only one that messed with him. I really don’t know if she could change him that much by herself! I mean, there were other enemies around town, like Nacedo, Nickolas and, not to forget, Congresswoman Whitacker was here too.” Liz chimed in, remembering the many past villains.

”You’re right” Max agreed and wondered “What do you think we can do about it? Because I really don’t want to leave for the summit; with him being such a loose cannon.”

After listening carefully to Max’ worries Liz waited a moment, thinking seriously about them. Coming to a decision she informed him, “You know, there’s nothing we can do right now. We don’t have enough time, but I’m sure we’ll be ok. I’ll just stay out of his way as much as possible and only see him for work or our meetings!”

”Are you sure?” Max inquired softly, and after seeing Liz’s nod he added “I guess you’re right. But as soon as I’m back, I’ll take him to the Granolith, I’m convinced that he can help Michael!”

”That’s it, you’re right, the Granolith will help him. But for some reason you or I have to be with Michael. And since he can’t stand me you’re the lucky one.” Smiling encouragingly at her sweetheart Liz added “I guess when you’re back you have a date with Michael and the Granolith!” Somewhat consoled that they had come up with a solution to the Michael problem, Max smilingly replied “Yeah”
*~~*~~*
Liz was becoming very irritated by Michaels intrusion into the little Max-time she had left and refused to spend any more time on discussing him. On a decidedly lighter note Liz said “Anyway, let’s change the topic. I’m sick of talking about Michael; he is spoiling your last days here with us. I’m sick of always pussyfooting around him, treating him like a prima-donna! No more, from now on he gets what he gives, you know, rude behaviour for rude behaviour, insults for insults! I’m sure you get the picture, don’t you?”

Stopping the jeep in the alley beside the CrashDown, Max looked at her and answered, “You’re right, no more Michael talk. We have better things to do!” and with a heated kiss he ended the conversation.

They went up to Liz’s balcony and got comfortable on her deckchair and discussed what to do with Michael and the listening device. They realised that, if Michael planted one, he might well have planted more of those things and searched their rooms. Not surprisingly they found more; one in Liz’s and one in Max’s bedroom, and also one under the table of the group’s favourite booth at the diner.

They decided not to tell Michael about their findings but to work with it. Within a day or two Max had to leave anyway and until that moment the two wanted to enjoy their time as much as possible.

Meanwhile, 08/08/2000…
After leaving Max and Liz in the baby store, Michael stormed through the mall towards the parking lot, climbed on his bike and sped off towards his apartment. Hastily Michael parked his bike and marched straight through his flat into his bedroom.

Right after turning on the monitor he dropped on his bed and waited for what was to come. Due to the fact that the jeep didn’t have it’s top up, he could hear Max and Liz chitchatting as they were approaching the car. Suddenly they were silent; the only sounds he could hear were of Max and Liz settling in the car.

Moments later Liz’s voice came through, loud and clear, and wouldn’t you know, she was talking about him, actually, the bitch wasn’t talking, no she was badmouthing him. Of course Max agreed with her, no surprise there!

After hearing their discussion about his ‘alleged’ shortcomings Michael felt his temper rise. “Who the hell do they think they are!” he yelled into his empty room.

He needed some time to calm down and then he pictured his next meeting with the pair. He saw their shocked faces at being found out badmouthing him. He saw himself, all cool, calm and collected; he’d show them he could behave if he wanted to. Michael gloated maliciously “Oh, this is good, this is sooo good!” he could practically smell his success…

But then, suddenly Michael remembered he couldn’t use this knowledge, because if he did, they would find out he had been eavesdropping. He was back to square one, when would he finally get a brake? He put all his pent-up frustration into one word and yelled “DAMN!”
*~~*~~*~~*~~*~~*~~*
That evening at the CrashDown, 08/08/2000…
The group had decided to meet that evening and just hang out together. Max and Michael were the first ones to arrive. Since they were alone Max took the chance and told Michael of his decision to leave him behind. “You know Michael, I’m really not happy with my decision, but I’m running out of time here. You don’t even try to show some respect and still treat everybody like shit. You don’t leave me any other option than to leave you behind.”

Michael listened to Max’s explanation and looking like a thunderstorm he barked, “Well, this just confirms it for me. You really are only listening to Liz. Whatever I say is wrong. So don’t bother, save your breath, I don’t need these explanations.”

Incredulously Max stared at his second. He couldn’t believe Michael; this was it, if until now he had felt sorry for leaving him behind, now he knew it was the only way. Max snapped out of patience “you’re a first-class ass Michael. You don’t listen, you don’t think and most of all you don’t care about anybody, other than yourself. It’s always all about you!”

Max berated Michael “until such a time as you know how to treat our friends with some respect I want you to stay away from them. As it is, nobody can rely on you, so until you decide whether or not you want to be a part of our group and my second in command, you better keep your distance. If you decide to stay with us, you better improve your behaviour and your manners.”

”And by the way, I wasn’t the first one to mention your behaviour and how unacceptable this would be at the summit!” After that Max told Michael exactly what Larek had said and added, “The thing is that I agree with what Larek thinks that you’re not yet ready for such a very important meeting. You’re unpredictable, rude, explosive and insulting. I tried talking with you about all of this and you always say you’d know how to behave if it was important enough. But right now you’re so out of control that I just don’t know if I can trust you.”

Taking a deep breath he continued “Larek also said, if you should treat me in a meeting at the summit like you do here, I would have to call you on it or I would lose the respect of the other leaders and become the laughingstock of the meeting. And if you should insult one of the others, especially Khivar, they could demand punishment according to the seriousness of the insult. Banishment would be the least you’d have to worry about!”

After their dispute ended, they sat in the booth, not talking with each other. Max was dreaming of what he would do with Liz once she got done with her shift. Michael was thinking of ways to appease Max so he could stick around and keep an eye on Liz and Kyle, and know of Max’s whereabouts.

Maria arrived with Kyle in tow. They joined the king and his second in the booth and started a lively discussion of how to spend the evening. Max smiled and added some ideas of his own.

Michael was brooding silently. The second didn’t take this news well at all. Of course it was all Liz’s fault for getting knocked up. Now Max needed somebody to guard her and their precious brood. In the end Max had no other option than to order Michael to keep watch over the group.

After taking a moment to think about his options Michael realised he had to backtrack his damaging statements from before and offered Max an olive branch. “I know we’ve had our differences but you know I will watch out for everybody! I’ll make sure everyone is safe!”

Looking sincerely at Max, his king, he continued “you’re making a very big mistake by going alone, but I’ll do my part and make sure everybody here is safe, you can count on me. Max, you have my word on it!”

Michael looked so serious that Max was bound to believe him and almost felt bad about leaving him behind. At least now Max was able to leave for the summit comforted with the knowledge that his trusted friend would watch out for his family and friends.
*~~*~~*~~*~~*~~*~~*
Later that night, 08/08/2000…
Sometime after midnight the Granolith called Max. The time to leave for the summit had come. Quietly, as not to alarm Michael through the listening device, Max and Liz got dressed and climbed down the fire escape. Remembering the bug in the jeep just in time, they decided to borrow the car from Liz’s parents and then drove to the Granolith chamber.

Liz stayed with her sweetheart and together they waited in silence for his departure. Suddenly the cone started to hum and the whole room came alive with all the colours swirling through the Granolith. After a few moments a set of blinking silver handprints became visible at the bottom of the cone, indicating to Max to put his hands on them.

Max embraced Liz one last time, kissed her thoroughly and followed the instructions. In an instant he disappeared from Liz’s side and reappeared inside the cone of the Granolith. One big, bright white flash and Max was gone.

At first Liz was shocked, but then she could feel the energy of the Granolith. The energy flowed through her, calming her, letting her know that everything was ok. After a while Liz left the chamber and headed home, already starting to feel lonely. As she lay in bed, waiting for sleep to claim her, Liz realised that her connection to Max was still strong.

About one hour after his departure Max left the Granolith and noticed that he was still able to have telepathic conversations with Liz, and better yet, even as she fell asleep the connection stayed open.
*~~*~~*~~*~~*~~*~~*
Early next morning, 08/09/2000…
Remembering the bugs Michael had planted in her room, Liz decided to get comfortable on her balcony. She determined the time had come to pass on the news of Max’s departure and called Isabelle. Liz asked her friend to inform Michael of the new situation. She didn’t feel up to dealing with him, figuring he would show up rather sooner than later demanding answers. Until that time she wanted to relax and take it easy, she wanted to be well rested before she had to butt heads with Michael.

After nibbling on the snacks she had picked up along the way, Liz started to update her diary. So many things had happened; her reconciliation with Max, the babies, the connection to Max, the little ones and the granolith, and so on. Writing in her diary helped her clear her mind, see what was important.

As soon Maria heard about Max’s departure, she came over to help distract Liz and spend some quality girlfriend time. She had absolutely no qualms to interrupt her friend, on the contrary, she couldn’t understand Liz’s obsession with keeping a diary.

After they had caught up on each other’s news, Maria unexpectedly turned serious. Liz recognized the look she had on her face; something was troubling her friend deeply. She closed her connection to Max almost completely because she realised what was worrying Maria might be upsetting and she didn’t know how she would react to it. “Ok Maria, out with it!”

“With what, Liz?” she tried to downplay her worries but failed miserably.

Liz gave her a pointed look and Maria caved. Tentatively she wanted to know “Liz, have you noticed that lately snacks and soft drinks disappear in the diner? I mean, only on certain days. On days when a certain person is working?”

“Yes Maria, I have, and it’s always on the days when Michael has his shift. I noticed it the first time just after Max and I got back together. Is this what you’re talking about?”

“Yeah, what do we do now? Do we tell your dad or are we covering for him? Well, to be honest, I already covered for him a few times.”

Liz assessed the situation and realized that if they told her dad, Michael would loose his job. On the other hand they couldn’t continue to cover for him indefinitely. Sighing heavily she responded, “I didn’t think he stole that much. Just something here and there, that’s why I ignored it and covered for him. But if you caught him too, he must have taken more than I thought. I guess I have to talk to him.” Coming to a decision she stated “I refuse to cover for him any longer; and he’s got to know that! Don’t you think so, Maria?”

“I agree, we need to talk with him and I for one am not looking forward to it. He’s being such an ass lately.”

“Maria, I just realised that every time he took something was before a hockey game was aired on TV. When is the next one? I think we should wait until then and see if he takes anything. If he does, I will confront him at his apartment; see what he has to say for himself. What do you think about that?”

“It’s as good a plan as any except I’m going with you!”

“Thanks Maria, you’re the best!” gratefully Liz hugged her friend.
*~~*~~*~~*~~*~~*~~*
Shortly afterwards Liz’s cell started to ring. Before she could say anything Isabelle stopped her and worriedly yelled “Liz, Michael is pissed, he’s on his way over to you. I’m right behind him. Let me tell you, he’s on a warpath!”

“Thanks for letting me know Izzy. I’ll be ready and waiting for him.” Hearing someone on the rungs of the ladder she said “he’s here, I can hear him on the fire escape. Are you almost here too?”

“Yeah, I’m just around the corner, see you in a few!” Liz had just enough time to end her conversation before a very irate Michael stuck his head over the railing.
*~~*~~*~~*~~*~~*~~*
On Liz’s balcony…
Storming up the fire escape Michael jumped over the railing and confronted Liz with all his pent up anger, frustration and jealousy of the last few weeks. ”Where the hell is Max? I know for a fact that he hasn’t left! So where is he? I want to see him now!” He stood before Liz, trying to intimidate her through his size and with his yelling.

Before she could reply, Isabelle climbed over the railing and positioned herself besides Liz and Maria. “Michael, Isabelle told you all about Max leaving for the summit. Well it’s true, early this morning, around 4; I brought him to the chamber. We were there for a short time, and then the Granolith picked him up and took him away. After that I came back to town.”

“You’re lying Liz, I know for a fact that he hasn’t left Roswell! There’s no way I wouldn’t know, believe me!”

Isabelle interrupted “Michael, how would you know? He was at Liz’s when the signal came and I didn’t know about his leaving until Liz called me earlier!”

“Yeah Michael, tell us, just how would you know? Please enlighten us, I’m very curious to hear that one!” Liz smirked, delighted at having the upper-hand and seeing the tall alien squirm.

This confrontation wasn’t going the way he had planned. He’d wanted to intimidate Liz until she caved and spilled the truth, but it didn’t seem to work. He got really flustered because he had no answers he could give them; he wanted to keep the planted bugs a secret. Instead he snarled, “Well that’s none of your business, I just know!”

“Well I’m sure it has something to do with the bugs you planted in the jeep, under the table of our booth at the diner and in Max’s and in my bedrooms. Isn’t that so, Michael?” Liz wanted to know.

“What!” Michael’s screech of outrage almost deafened the girls “Why would I do that, and where would I get those things? You’re crazy; you know that?” Michael was stunned; he didn’t understand how Liz could know about it. He had majorly underestimated the bitch!

Liz just gave him a pointed look, raised her brows and said “Max had flashes, that’s how we found out. That was also the moment he decided you were not trustworthy and that he had to leave you behind! So you see, you can stop blaming me for all the shit that happens in your life, it was all your own doing!”

Isabelle and Maria were shocked. Never in a million years would they have expected something like this from Michael, their trusted friend. Maria let her temper loose and slapped him, hard. “What the hell are you thinking Michael? Or are you even thinking? I’m starting to have serious doubts about that!” for good measure she slapped him again.

Hurricane DeLuca continued her ranting while accenting every word by poking her index finger on his chest “You are his second, you know, second as in second after the first! Can you even count that far? You are also the one who keeps telling Max that he is the king, the leader, and that he has to lead! Well that’s what he did and you went against his orders! You make me sick, you know. To top it all off; you call yourself his friend, well, some friend you turn out to be!” Liz started to wave Maria’s oil under her friend’s nose because right now was not the time to freak out.

Isabelle was outraged too; she could hardly believe what she had heard. She went Ice Queen on Michael. With a frosty voice she demanded, “How dare you spy on our friends? Just because things don’t go the way you wanted them to go, you have no right to infringe on their privacy. You knew how difficult it was for Max and Liz to prepare for his departure. Especially with them expecting the twins. Yet you had to spoil the little time they had.”

As Michael opened his mouth to reply she cut him off “shut up, if you did this as his second, you have way overstepped your competences. As Maria rightly said, the second comes after the king! Imagine that, spying on your king, isn’t that called treason?”

Looking him directly in the eyes she said, “with this action you proved Max right, you know. Until this moment I had my doubts, I thought you should go to the summit. In fact I told Max that if you had to, you would know how to behave. Obviously I was wrong!”

Becoming really upset she started to yell, “Michael, right now I’m so ashamed of you! I really don’t know if I can trust you ever again! I don’t want to see you anymore.” Loosing her Ice Queen composure, Isabelle turned away and started to cry.

Hello Feedbackers and Lurkers!

here I have a new part and it's not even Friday  Anyway, this is a short chapter and I just felt like posting it

I hope you enjoy reading this new part!

09, Michael with Issues, 08/10/2000
Next morning…

Michael was pissed; felt misunderstood, and knew exactly whose fault this was. Liz, it was always Liz Parker! She had been the bane of his life ever since Max had first laid his eyes on her in third grade! Now she was ruining his and Max’s friendship. She was out to get him and Kyle was after his job as second in command!

Well, he would show them, but right now he would keep his distance. He would be present for training sessions but keep his distance from the others. He would go to work and just ignore them, only deal with them if he absolutely had to. He would wait and see, plot and plan! In the end Max and Isabelle both would see that humans just couldn’t be trusted and that Maria and Liz were no exception to that rule.

Luckily his shift was over for this day and he was almost ready to leave. He was glad that he didn’t have to deal with the bitches from hell, since both of them had had the morning shift. He was just relieved he didn’t have to see them in the next few days, because he had plans that didn’t include school, work or Blondie and perfect Parker.

Already looking forward to the days ahead he chuckled very pleased with himself. All that was needed were some good ideas and the guts to carry them out. He was convinced that the clueless humans wouldn’t see through his little plot, after all they trusted him. So in the morning he would call in sick and after that he would be quite busy enjoying the games on TV. Right now he was in the storage room to stock up his private snack supply, and then he would go home.
*~~*~~*~~*~~*~~*~~*
After the breakfast shift…
”Lizzy, Michael just called in sick, he really didn’t sound too good,” Jeff called from the kitchen to the backroom were Liz and Maria were. They had just ended their shift and were changing into their street clothes.

He came out, carrying a basket filled with CrashDown food and worriedly begged “girls, he really didn’t sound very good and I know he has no one looking after him, so I’m quite positive that he doesn’t have anything decent to eat at home. Well, anyway, would you two do me a big favour and check in on him? And while you’re at it, could you bring him this basket of food? I’d really appreciate it!”

When Michael called in sick this morning, all the alarm-bells in Jeff’s head went off at a disturbing speed. This was one of the times when Jeff gave in to his “mother hen tendencies”. For a long time he had tried really hard to hide them because they didn’t go very well with his reputation of being “cool and laid back”, but he had to accept this “flaw” because this deep-rooted need in him to help the less fortunate ones could not be hidden. When he had found out about Michael Guerin’s home situation and the need for emancipation, the teenager most definitely had become one of his “special projects”!

Maria and Liz looked at each other, then at Jeff and nodded. He handed them the basket and the girls left.

The girls put the basket in the backseat of the Jetta before taking their seats up front. As Maria was leaving the alley, Liz asked the obvious questions “Maria, do you know if Michael got hurt early this morning during the training sessions? Or maybe did he overdo it? What do you think?” before Maria could answer she continued “when I think about it, he seemed his usual sourly self when I left!”

“You’re right, he was fine this morning! I wonder what happened between then and now. Hmmm, hey Liz, I know what happened, Michael got bitten by the play-offs-bug!”

The longer Maria thought about it the more outraged she became and she started to grumble “what a bastard, to play sick and leave your dad hanging like this, after everything Mr. P. did for him! Since this is a very busy time your dad had to call in José, and he in turn had to change his plans. Actually, José had already requested these few days off to watch the playoffs with his friends; they had it all planned for months!”

“You could be right Maria. Oh boy, I have a bad feeling about this. I think we will walk in on him watching TV and I also think that it’s time to confront him!” hesitating a moment she went on “unless of course he is really sick! What do you say Maria?”

“I agree with you, but I have to add that so far the Czechs have never gotten sick a day in their life. So it would be a big coincidence if he should start with it today!”

Liz grumbled under her breath “I was afraid you’d say that!” Both of them remained quiet until they reached Michael’s apartment building.

After Maria parked the Jetta Liz grabbed the basket from the backseat and together they walked to Michael’s apartment. Having just entered the hallway, they could already hear Michael cheering for his team, the Dallas Stars, noisily.

Squaring her shoulders Liz knocked on the door. “Go away, I’m busy” yelled a very healthy sounding Michael.

Both girls started to feel their tempers rise and forcefully pounded on the door. They heard some movement trough the closed door and suddenly Michael was standing in front of them.

He growled intimidatingly “What the hell do you want, I’m sick and I have to go back to bed!”

That did it; that was the last straw that broke the camel’s back. Liz looked past the big alien into the living room and she saw not only the running TV airing sports, but also snacks and drinks, just like the ones they sold at the CrashDown. To top it off, Michael’s offensive behaviour did the rest and she lost her cool.

Shocking Maria and Michael and even herself, she shoved the tall man to the side and marched right into his living room. “Move your sorry ass, Michael!” Liz hissed and after taking an exaggerated look around she scolded him “aren’t you ashamed of yourself? All these snacks and drinks are from the CrashDown and as far as we know you didn’t pay for a single one them! I’m really, really disappointed in you. My dad gave you this job because he wanted to help you. He could’ve easily found someone with more experience, you know? And this is how you repay him?”

”Are you implying that I’m stealing?” Michael inquired innocently, trying to talk himself out of trouble.

Maria looked him up and down, letting him see what exactly she thought of him and replied forcefully “No, we’re not implying, it’s a fact! And this isn’t the first time either!”

“This is none of your business; and just for your information I talked with Mr. P. about it, and he gave me his ok,” was Michael’s offended and angry reply.

Liz listened to Michael lying so easily and she became colder than the Ice Princess on her best day. With deadly calm she said, “You’re a coward Michael! You can’t even take responsibility for your actions! You know what? It’s because of my dad that we found out about your stealing from the diner! He informed us about the missing food and asked us to keep an eye on things!”

Freezing him on the spot with her killing glance she added, “so far Maria and I were stupid enough to cover for you, but enough is enough! Today you went too far. This was supposed to be José’s day off, he had it planned for some time, and you knew he had friends come from far away too! Now he had to come in to take your shift and my dad has to pay him double wages for it!”

Thinking about her dad’s reaction to this mess made her sad. She informed Michael “Everybody knows that my dad is very easy going, but let me tell you something about your boss! He’s extremely tolerant and believes strongly in giving people second chances because someone believed in him. Believed in him enough to give him his second chance after he had made a huge mess of his life! But there are a few things he can’t and won’t tolerate; things like being lied to, dishonesty and he can’t stand people stealing!”

Taking a very deliberate look around the room she said contemptuously, “Congratulations Michael, it looks like you managed to do all of those things at once!”

“I didn’t steal anything, I wanted to ask him, but he wasn’t around! So you see, it’s not my fault!” Michael tried to defend himself.

“Not good enough! We know this isn’t the first time you’ve stolen,” Maria answered and continued sadly, “I used to be so proud of you Michael, but now, I don’t want to know you anymore!”

Liz and Maria walked to the door and Maria picked up the basket. “Mr. Parker thought you were really sick and he was worried about you. Actually, he sent us over to bring you some decent food. He was concerned that you might not eat properly! Well since we know you’re not sick you won’t be needing this; I’ll just take it back!”

At the door Liz turned and challenged him, “Michael, I hope you’re honest and fair enough to go to work, now! If you can’t tell my dad the real reason for playing hooky, you can tell him that you’re feeling better and that you want to relieve José! I don’t know if you’re man enough to confess your stealing and lying. That’s up to you, but know this; from this moment on I’m not covering for you anymore, unless, of course, it’s alien related!” with that said, she turned and left the apartment.

Maria added angrily “what she said goes for me too!” After that she followed Liz to the car.

Michael stood there feeling sorry for himself. Why was the whole world against him? As usual he came up with the answer quickly “Liz that stuck up bitch! What the hell does she know anyway! Since she’s been fucking my good friend and king, she has become unbearable!”

He swore to himself, “this time she’s gone too far. Who the hell is she that she thinks she can tell me what I have to do? Now she’s even influencing Maria against me! Well, if she thinks that I jump to do her bidding she’s sadly mistaken!”

Hello everybody, it's update time

As always, thanks to my great beta :D

I hope you Feedbackers and Lurkers all enjoy this next part!

10, Pandemonium, 08/10/2000
After her run-in with Michael Liz found it impossible to calm down. She could feel all this excess energy flowing through her body, making her all jumpy and nervous. And today of all days she had to work the dinner shift too, because her parents had a rendezvous to celebrate her mom’s birthday. They would return long after the CrashDown closed. That left Liz in charge, meaning that she had to help during the dinner rush and then again at closing time.

After the two girls left Michael’s, they visited the mall, but Liz was not in the right mood for shopping or anything else. All she wanted, no needed, was to be alone, to chill out. They had spent half an hour at the mall, before she managed to convince her friend to give her some alone time. After convincing Maria to loan her the Jetta, Liz dropped her off at home and drove out into the desert. She hid the car in the shade of some big rocks, grabbed her bag and water bottle and walked a short distance, until she found a nice big and smooth rock to sit on.

She let the desert breeze blow through her hair, and took a deep, calming breath. She loved the desert’s barren beauty and its mystery. It was also a place where she could relax and let go of all her worries.

As she calmed down she opened her connection to Max. Just a little at the beginning and when she realised that Max was sleeping, she opened it some more. She needed his strength but had to be very careful not to disturb him. Liz just let his energy flow through her and it helped her relax a little. She missed him so much and as her hormones started to flare up, she became disheartened and teary-eyed.

As she could feel Max’s growing restlessness in his sleep, she became aware of the fact that he was picking up on her turmoiled emotions. Immediately she closed the link to a bare minimum. He needed his rest and if he worried about her then Max couldn’t concentrate on the peace talks.

Liz stayed in this trance-like state for while. The intensity of the energy charges flowing through her body had calmed considerably. She was glad they hadn’t erupted into the green flashing streaks like the last time. That had been an extremely painful experience. One she didn’t mind to never live through again. When Liz felt calm enough to continue without Max’s strength she closed their connection.

After checking the time on her wristwatch she gathered her few belongings and returned to the car. Once Liz had returned the Jetta to the DeLucas’, she walked the short distance to the CrashDown.

She arrived just in time to change into her teal coloured uniform and to start her shift. It seemed like the whole town of Roswell was having their dinner at the CrashDown and everybody was trying to be particularly difficult, especially for her. It just wasn’t her day! After a gruelling time of waiting on spoiled customers, she wearily climbed the stairs to her apartment. Grabbing some snacks and leftovers Liz went to her little sanctuary, her balcony.

She was exhausted, charged with all the energy running throughout her body and this time it was a lot stronger than before. To top it all off she was starving. Liz realised that she hadn’t eaten anything since her sandwich at lunch and decided to nibble on some snacks to get rid of the biggest hunger pangs.

Moments later she found out the painful way that the food didn’t agree with her, not at all. She had barely enough time to climb through her bedroom window and reach the toilet before her stomach heaved and she had to throw up most painfully. Afterwards she was too miserable and beat; she just lay down on the cool tile floor and cried.

Feeling the cold seeping into her body brought her back to reality. She wasn’t sure just how long she had lain like this, but she became aware of the green streaks of energy cursing up and down her arms and legs. Liz pulled herself together and got up off the floor. She had to hold on to the sink to steady herself and risked a look into the mirror.

She wasn’t surprised to see her face all fuzzy and unrecognisable. No, no surprise there, not at all, since this wasn’t the first time this happened. Desperately she closed her eyes and opened them again only to see her face, but this time the green streaks ran over her features too. It had never been this bad. Now she knew she needed help. But whom could she call? Maria? No, she would have a major freak out and no amount of cedar oil would help her. Isabelle? No, she too would freak out but then she would start to feel guilty because this was alien related. Kyle? Only as a last resort, he didn’t have too many alien experiences, but maybe Buddha would help. Michael? Sadly enough he was the most suited person to help. She remembered his difficulties to get his powers under control. Since he had managed to do it, he would be able to tell her how to control her powers.

After closing the diner, 08/10/2000, 9.30 pm
With shaking fingers she dialled Michael’s number and waited for him to answer. “What do you want!“ he barked “I don’t have time, the game’s about to start.”

“Michael? This is an emergency, I really, really need your help” she cried into her phone.

“What, are you craving chocolate or something? Find somebody else to run your errands; I’m not responsible for that too!” Michael’s anger was increasing steadily.

“Michael, this is serious, and anyway, when have I ever sent you on any kind of errand for me? Never, and you know that” Liz’s voice sounded calmer than she felt. “My powers are going crazy, like they used to go out of whack every time you where agitated, remember?”

Michael let Liz stew for a while before he gave her his answer “After the game is over I’ll go on my usual control round and I’ll see you then. That’s the best I can do for you.”

At this rude answer Liz’s powers exploded with a big white flash and a resounding bang and broke the mirror in a thousand pieces. Michael heard the noise in the background but decided to ignore it. This was an excellent opportunity to teach miss high and mighty Parker a lesson she would never forget. He would let her stew for a bit and when he finally would show up, she would be very grateful. If she was too stubborn to respect him and treat him like he deserved to be treated, then she had to learn it the hard way.

“Well Liz, today I needed you to cover for me and you refused, now you expect me to drop everything and come running. You can just forget that! I’ll see you on my round!” he abruptly ended the conversation.

Shocked Liz dropped her phone on the floor. She wasn’t too sure why she let it fall, if Michael’s callus answer or her melting her phone was the reason, probably both. As she wanted to pick it up, she shot a big flash directly in to the carpet and burned a big hole through it and into the floor underneath. Loosing her nerve completely she ran to the kitchen to use the phone there. She grabbed it and speedily dialled Michael’s number again. The only answer she got was his answering machine.

Completely frustrated and scared she yelled “Michael, get your ass over here right now, before I blow up the whole apartment and the neighbours call the police!”

Before she could continue he interrupted her “Let's not exaggerate, you’re only human after all! It can’t possibly be that bad, I know that from my own experience. I already told you I’ll drop by later. So you’ll just have to wait.” He ended this discussion as quickly as he had started it! As she wanted to hang up the phone she noticed that she had melted this one too.

Call for help, 08/10/2000, 9.40 pm
Liz started to feel hot, like she was on fire. Thinking straight was almost impossible because she was in a lot of pain too. She started to worry about her babies. She knew that, before trying anything, else she had to cool down.

She ran to her bathroom, not noticing that, in passing, she marked the hallway with her flashes. She walked right up to her sink and turned on the cold water. Holding her hands in the running water she tried to calm her breathing and for a short moment it brought her some relief. Sadly enough it didn’t last. Before long she started to shoot sparks and flashes and her bathroom was in shambles. In shock she raised her hand and found that there was a steady stream shooting from her palm, breaking everything in its path. She knew she couldn’t wait for Michael to show up. She needed help right now, and she needed it fast.

She wrapped wet towels around her hands and carefully picked up her cell, putting it down on her desk. Using a pen she pressed Kyle’s speed-number and was gratified when he answered after the second ring. “Liz?” his sleepy voice came across, ”what’s up?”

From sheer relief she cried “Kyle, my powers are acting up like crazy. Things around me are blowing up! I melted two phones and this one is starting to go soft too. Please, Kyle, come and help me.”

Kyle could hear his friend’s desperation and jumped into action; throwing on some shorts and T-shirt on the run to his car and picking up his car keys on the way. “I’m on my way; I’ll be with you in a few minutes. You should call Michael for help since he had the same problems!”

“I already did, but he refused. Kyle, just climb up the fire escape, I’m in my room, oh, and thanks” Liz cried before dropping her cell.

Help is on the way, 08/10/2000, 9.45 pm
While speeding to Liz’, Kyle called his father, who was on duty. ”Dad, we have a situation!” he started and filled him in. Feeling better now that his dad was watching for any signs of trouble at the station Kyle turned into the back alley of the CrashDown. After leaving his car he raced to the fire escape and climbed up. On nearing the top he could hear all the noise coming from Liz’s room. He could hear things breaking and exploding and above all that noise he could hear Liz’s cries of pain and fear. In that moment he swore “forgive me Buddha, but Michael Guerin is a dead alien!”

As he scrambled over the wall he called Liz, to let her know he was here. Kyle could see her approach the window very carefully and he could also see all the sparks and flashes she was giving off. “Oh Buddha help me help my friend” he prayed.

Climbing through the broken remains of the window he noticed the state of her room. “Oh Buddha, what the hell happened here? It looks like a bomb exploded in here!” he exclaimed before he could stop himself.

Coming to his senses he walked to Liz and looked her over. Noticing her tearstained cheeks, the pain filled and freighted look in her eyes and all the green and white flashes crawling over her arms and face. “Damn that Guerin, I’m going to kill him and enjoy doing it!” he swore.

Taking in the desperate state his friend was in, he knew it was up to him to make things right for her. His otherwise rational friend was beyond registering what was going on. She was scared out of her wits. His first priority was to calm her so they could decide what to do next. They had to prevent her uncontrolled powers from escalating again.

Gently he cradled her cheeks and forced her to look at him. The moment he touched her he got hit with her white flashes and they burned his hands. Manfully ignoring the pain he instructed her, “Hey, Liz, don’t talk, just look at me and listened, ok? I’m going to help you to calm down, and then we can talk, ok?” Liz just nodded and looked at him with so much trust that he hoped to be worthy of it.

”Ok, here we go! Liz, look into my eyes, try to ignore everything else and concentrate on my eyes and on what I’m telling you!” to be sure she understood. He waited for her answering nod before he continued “we will do some breathing exercises, that’s the safest and fastest way to calm down! Do you understand?” again he waited for her nod.

“Ok let’s get started. Keep looking into my eyes and inhale, hold your breath, exhale and again you hold your breath. Then we start again. The more you relax, the slower we will breathe, ok? Ok, inhale one, two, and three, hold your breath, and exhale one, two, and three! Excellent, inhale, stop, exhale, and stop.” Kyle could feel Liz calming down. Her shuddering breaths became quieter, steadier, “You’re doing better, you’re going to be alright!”

After a while he noticed her sparks and flashes slowly disappeared. Her breathing was steady and her eyes lost the look of pain and fright. “Kyle…” Liz started but he interrupted her, “not yet, just relax a bit longer, you’re exhausted.”

He led her to her bed and urged her to lie down, only to find her bed tilting to one side. That was the last straw for Liz, she started to laugh hysterically and Kyle soon joined her. When their laughter had died down to weak snorts and hiccups, they moved to the kitchen. Kyle led Liz to a chair, assuring himself that she was comfortable and started to boil some water for tea, then he rummaged through the cupboards, looking for herbal tea and some cookies to feed his friend.

After Liz had eaten some cookies and they stayed in her stomach, she started to feel stronger again, more like herself. She explained to Kyle how things started to turn bad for her after she had confronted Michael. Following that, she just couldn’t stay calm long enough to keep her cool through out the day. Every time something happened it got harder and harder for her to keep the electric currents under control until everything went haywire after her phone call with Michael.

Listening carefully to Liz’s explanations, Kyle realised that as long as she was calm she was also in control of her new powers. Now they only had to find a way to keep her calm enough to keep control of them. “Liz, I think that with these breathing exercises and regular meditation you could gain control over your powers. I think they are controlled by your mind and if you get very emotional you lose the upper hand. So, when you start to feel charged, upset or get mad, all you have to do is take a moment to regain your balance. Later, when you have them under control you can get as mad as you want to and still be in command of them, but until then you have to curb your temper. What do you think, is this possible?” Thinking about Kyle’s words she came to the same conclusion and told him so.

Suddenly Kyle noticed the melted phone on the kitchen wall. “Oh, Buddha, did you do that?” he burst out and suddenly he started to feel the burns on his palms and on his chest and everywhere she had touched him in the heat of her troubles.

Liz followed his gaze and for the first time became aware of how badly she had hurt her friend and herself too. She became very upset and promptly burned a hole into the tabletop.

Kyle grabbed her hands, burning his in the process and forced her to look at him; he started the breathing exercises again.

“Kyle, let go of my hands, I’m hurting you, let go!” she cried.

He held on to her and ordered her, “Liz, enough, this doesn’t help. You keep hurting yourself and me too. Stop it and start your exercise. Afterwards you can heal me.” And for good measure he shook her forcefully, “you understand what I’m saying?”

“Sorry Kyle, I just lost it for a moment, I’m ok now, I’m ok”

This time after Liz had calmed down enough, Kyle led her into a meditation. Suddenly he realised that Liz was not listening any longer. She seemed to be in trance. Watching her carefully, he noted every breath she took and how her eyes were moving under the closed lids. She was completely removed from this reality.

Meanwhile…
Liz had fallen into a deep trance. She was at peace; all her problems seemed to be far, far away. Everything became very clear. And then she could feel some new energy, nothing like her own or Max’s or their babies’. No this energy was strong, even powerful and in spite of all this she felt safe and protected. She was basking in it, absorbing it.

In a very strange sense she felt whole, like she had been waiting for this and hadn’t known it. And then she knew, the Granolith had chosen her. At this very moment she didn’t understand what he wanted with her, but that was ok. All would be revealed in time. And something else was happening; she could feel how the Granolith healed all her cuts and bruises from this night’s experience. Slowly she came back to reality. On opening her eyes she saw her trusted friend watching over her.

Smiling at him so brightly, she almost blinded him, Liz let him know just how grateful she was for the selfless help he had offered. “Kyle, you won’t believe what happened. But look” taking his hands between hers she held them gently. Suddenly her hands started to glow in a soft green and Kyle could feel the pain disappear. Still smiling she touched his chest and everywhere else she had previously hurt him, and healed all his wounds.

“Wow” Kyle had lost his ability to speak. He looked at Liz and knew something monumental had happened.

After a while Liz revealed her experience, “Kyle, when you led me into the meditation something happened. I suddenly found myself engulfed by the Granolith. You know, by his strength, his power and his wisdom. He chose me. Right now I don’t really know what for, but I can sense that it’s good and right and it’ going to be big. The Granolith is good and wants to help. He is guiding me, showing me things, like, how to heal you. Soon I will know what he wants me to do for him.”

Seeing his awed expression she added “please Kyle, let’s keep this between you and me, at least for a little while. I’d like to tell Max about it first.” “Sure, anything you say, Liz” her trusted friend agreed.

Beverly Hills, California, 08/10/2000…
Cal Langley was enjoying some quiet time relaxing at his poolside. Most of the time he was much too busy producing movies, finding partners for his many ventures or hosting some of his famous parties. But today he was happy to appreciate the simple pleasures the humans enjoyed so much. Pleasures that needed decades to acquire and he almost lost them because of one spoiled boy-king named Max Evans.

Luckily his human senses were only dimmed for a while and not lost. But since that fateful encounter with his king, all he had to do was to think of him and he began seething with anger. He was relieved when his parting words to his king had been heeded. After returning to Roswell, Max never contacted him in anyway.

Cal was fair enough to realise that it wasn’t Max’s fault that he, as the king’s protector, had to follow his king’s every command. It hadn’t been Max, or more precisely King Zan of Antar, who had encoded him with the order to obey his every wish, which forced him to follow the boy-king’s every command.

As he was dozing off, he almost missed the call of the Granolith. He was astonished that it had finally happened. So far he had only heard about it and in his first decade on earth he had expected, even waited for the call. And now, out of the blue, he was called by the Granolith. Knowing he had to follow the order, Cal left the poolside more exited than he had been in a very long time.

He had things to do, to prepare. Calling his housekeeper he started to shoot off his orders “Mercedes, I have to leave as soon as possible. I need you to pack my suitcase; I’ll be wearing casual clothes. But first prepare me a small snack; I have some calls to make!” He entered his office and called his pilot. He was glad that his Jet was always ready to take off; it really made things a lot easier!
