Disclaimer: As always I own nothing and stake no claims on any of the Roswell story line or characters. :D :D

Hey guys! I am finally here with an update! Sorry it has taken me a little longer than expected but we had a horrific ice storm in St. Louis and I lost power at my house for 5 days! It was horrible (and freezing!).

You guys are awesome! Thanks for all your wonderful feedback! I could never have asked for a better outcome to my first story. You make me want to write more!

Tigerr100- Glad you loved the last part! Hope you like this one too!
Begonia9508- thank you for all your feedback! :D I enjoy hearing what you have to say! I am glad I can keep you guessing. Yes, I loved making Michael the “hero” helping Liz. I think it helps with the whole star crossed angst!
Timeloar31- Glad you are liking the story. Hope you like the next part! :D
L-J-L 76- Well this chapter will answer a few of your burning questions, but will probably just leave you with so many more! :? Don’t worry the answers are coming!
Addicted2AmberEyes-I am glad I was able to leave you in suspence! It means the chapter did it’s job! But hold on to your seat, I am sure there is more to come!
roswells_angel285- glad you are finding the storyline unpredictable. I like that! Yes, I hated having to send Max flying across the room, but it was for a good cause!

Earth2Mama-Welcome! Glad you found my story! :D
Raemac- Thanks for the BUMP! :D

And of course to all those Lerkers…..glad you are back too!

Side note: I have opened a author's thread and posted an idea I am working on for a new story I am preparing. Hop over and let me know what you all think!

Thanks to my wonderful new sounding board and BETA Steph (thetvgeneral). She has been very encouraging at helping me get this ready for you. I have a lot in store in the next few chapters so I hope you enjoy the ride!

Chapter 11

Liz’s heavy eyes slowly opened. Blackness met her gaze and she squinted, trying to figure out where she was. She looked over and found her side table clock telling her it was 4:00 a.m.

She weakly tried to sit up, but as her head swam, she decided it would be best just to lay back and try and rest. She sighed slightly to herself. She was not ready to face the crowd she knew was now present in her home. Her cover was now blown and there was going to be no more hiding from her past and Max.

Max….if she concentrated hard enough she could still feel the heat on her lips from the searing kiss they had shared on the beach not too many hours ago. So many questions about that bittersweet moment clouded her mind. She still could not wrap her mind around how he had found her. It was like fate had brought him to her, even after all the time she had spent running from him. Now she couldn’t run anymore.

Liz closed her eyes and reached out and found the reignited connection with Max. It had been so long since she had felt that part of her heart warm. She had gotten used to the icy cold that had been lying there for the last several years and for the first time in a long time; she didn’t feel cold on the inside. She was filled with the warmth that she had not even realized she had been searching for.

“Oh god, how do I face him after all this time?” Liz thought out loud to herself.

She heard a rustle in the corner and immediately grabbed the covers to her chin. Her heart began to race and she was petrified. The voice that spoke back immediately calmed her.

“First you rest, then you deal with Max Evans.” Maria quietly called from the over sized chair across the room. She had refused to leave Liz’s side after Michael had told the others what had transpired at the lab. She didn’t want anything to happen to her and was just so happy to be here with her friend after four years.

Liz smiled at the sound of her best friend’s voice. Hot tears began to fill her eyes. She hadn't realized how much she had missed Maria. “Hey Ria.”

Maria rose out of the chair and made her way over to Liz’s side. Tears were slowly collecting in her eyes as she reached out for her friend and they embraced. “I’ve missed you chica.”

“I think I’ve missed you more.” Liz answered through her tears. She slowly let go of Maria and looked at her friend. The woman now sitting on the end of her bed was not the same girl she had left back in Roswell. That girl was now the strong, determined woman that she was looking at.

Maria watched as Liz looked at her. The shy, innocent girl she had grown up with in Roswell was now replaced with this independent, strong willed, stubborn woman with haunted eyes. Maria could see the depth of despair that lay in Liz’s eyes from the last few years of living away from her heart’s desire. It reminded her a lot of the haunted look Max had developed not long after Liz had left Roswell. The look had never gone away and Maria hoped that now that they were in the same radius of each other again, two of them could finally get closure to the pain that held them both back from living.

Maria smiled slightly. “So what’s this I hear about two certain someone’s finding their way back to each other by some mysterious goddess? Are you gonna kiss and tell girlfriend or do I have to yank it out of you?”

Liz blushed. “Maria, it’s a long story and I am really tired and….”

Maria held a finger up to her mouth. “Before you try to get out of this, you might like to know that Max is out in the living room freaking out, ok? He almost had a nervous break down at watching you like that, Liz. He’s worried about you. We all are. What the hell happened out there on that beach?”

Liz shook her head slightly trying to recall the situation that transpired out on the beach earlier. “The last thing I remember is seeing Max. Maria it was the strangest thing. I saw him and then I was being drawn to him. I felt like I was in a trance. I remember kissing him and feeling this instant flash, like a spark igniting a fire. I think it was our connection coming back to life. Then Michael showed up and that’s all I can recall, why?”

Maria looked at her friend. She saw the awful black circles under her eyes and could see confusion staring back at her. Did Liz really not know what she had done to Max? Maria swallowed hard and began to fill her in on what had transpired just a few hours ago.

“Well, the Cliff Notes version is you wigged out on the beach, sending green electricity firing at Max and Michael then passed out. You were burning up. And when I mean burning Liz, your insides were on fire! Max tried to heal you while you were unconscious and you attacked him with the green electricity and almost killed him. Liz, when did you get powers?”

Liz sat speechless. Had she really tried to kill Max? Was he hurt? She began to panic again. She grabbed the covers and tried to get up quickly. She had to find Max. She could feel a slight tingle in her hands. “Maria, where is Max?”

Maria went to reach out to stop her when she was a green light reflecting in the blackness of Liz’s bedroom. She gasped. “Liz, look at your hands.”

Liz held her hands out in front of her and saw the green electricity illuminating her hands. Terror filled her body and the growing fear only made the green on her hands stronger. She could feel herself loosing control of her senses. She tried to concentrate on holding back her fear, but she only began to be overwhelmed with the burning sensation that was now traveling up her arm.

Maria watched, careful as to not get too close to Liz. When she watched Liz collapse to her knees she screamed out as loud as she could. “MICHAEL!”

Michael bolted through the door with Isabel and Max right behind him. He could see Liz kneeling on the floor painfully trying to hold back the returning green electricity he had seen already too much tonight.

Max saw Liz on the floor in pain and tried to push through Michael. Isabel grabbed his shoulder, holding him back. “Remember what happened last time Max, please stay back.” She said in her most stern voice. But the hint of panic was still there.

Michael entered further into the room, doing his best to stay back from Liz. “Maria, what the hell happened?”

Maria backed up slightly and spoke, tears running down her face. “I’m not sure. We were talking about her almost killing Max and the next thing I know she got upset and then the green electricity returned.”

Max stepped forward and placed a hand on Michael’s shoulder. “Michael, what if this isn’t an adverse reaction from the pentagram but from me.”

Isabel spoke up now. “You mean the healing, Max?”

Max had an idea and he quickly side stepped Michael. Michael reached out and tried to grab Max, but was unable to get him before he was too close to Liz to shoot him.
“Damn it Max! What in the hell are you thinking. She could kill you!”

Max knelt down behind Liz. “Trust me guys. I am going to try something.” He closed his eyes and concentrated on the connection he shared with Liz. He could feel her building terror and panic as she tried to keep herself in control. He could see the power building up inside her but she didn’t know how to control it or how to release it.

Max spoke out loud to her. “Liz, can you hear me?”

“Max….” Came her weak reply. She was on the verge of loosing consciousness.

“Do you trust me Liz?”

“Yes……” came her reply. She could feel the burning sensation over her entire body.

“You have to release the power Liz. You have to let it go. Concentrate on Michael and release it when I say to.”

Liz was horrified. “I could kill him I can’t do that.”

“Trust me, Liz. Have faith in me.”

Liz nodded because she was too weak to even speak. Max looked over his shoulder and mentally spoke to Michael and Isabel. “When I say now, raise your shield. I think Liz is getting powers. She is not sure how to handle them and doesn’t know how to control them. She needs to release her green electricity which I think is similar to our blasting energy. I’m going to have her fire it at your shield.”

“Are you nuts Maxwell!” came Michael’s reply. “What if you’re wrong?”

“I don’t think we have much of a choice here Michael, please trust me. Is? Are you ok with this?” Maxwell answered back.

“I don’t see any other choice. I trust you Max.” Isabel reached out placing her hand on Michael’s shoulder and raised her hand out ready to raise her shield.

Maria watched the show in front of her petrified for her friends. She could do nothing but sit back and watch. “Michael?” She called out.

She heard his voice in her head. “Everything will be fine love. Please stand back.”

Maria inched back against the wall and could only pray for them as she watched Liz raise her now glowing arm towards Michael and Isabel.

“Now!”

She heard Max yell, prompting Liz to fire her power. She held her breath as she watched Michael and Isabel bring up their shield, bracing themselves for the impact.

Chapter 12

“Now!”

Max supported Liz as he braced them as she released all the built up energy towards Michael and Isabel’s shield. A green light escaped Liz’s hands in a blinding flash as it hit the shield hard, causing Michael and Isabel to both get thrown backwards and hit the wall. Maria screamed as she watched Michael’s eyes close as their bodies slid down the wall.

Max caught Liz as she collapsed in his arms. The force that was exerted pushed Max down as he tried to break Liz’s fall. They hit the floor and the wind was knocked out of Max and he gasped for breath.

He felt Maria’s hands lifting Liz off of him and Max winced as he moved to sit up. His body ached and strained from the blow and he knew he’d be sore but nothing seemed broken. He looked over and found Maria looking down at Liz. The worried expression told Max that Liz was unconscious.

Max knelt next to her and checked Liz for signs of life. Her hair stuck to her face, which he pushed back before he placed his finger to her neck. When he found a pulse he motioned for Maria to stay by her while he checked the others.

Isabel felt her head pounding and tried to catch her breath as she sat up. “Damn!” she said out loud. “Where the hell did she learn that?”

Michael groggily sat up and placed his head on the wall for support. “You got me, but it sure as hell is going to leave a mark.”

Max looked down and watched them slowly sitting up. He reached out, placing a shaky hand on Isabel and quickly did a once over on her. After he was satisfied, finding that everything was as it should be, he did the same for Michael. They both were a little worse for wear, but no damage had been done.

Alex, after hearing the racket, was standing at the door. He surveyed the room before entering. “What is going on?” He asked now worried as he saw Isabel leaning against the wall and Liz collapsed in Maria’s arms.

“Well, it looks like our Lizzie has gone and got herself alien powers.” Maria stated flatly, trying to break the mood slightly.

Alex entered the room cautiously and reached down to help Isabel as he saw her trying to stand. He kissed her lightly, concerned for her. She stroked his cheek and smiled sleepily, “I’m ok. Just a little sore.”

Max returned to Liz’s side. As he glanced down at her seemingly lifeless body, he was flooded with emotions. Tears filled his eyes as he collapsed to one knee and slowly brought Liz to his chest.

Maria, seeing that he was distraught, laid her hand on his shoulder, comforting him. Liz is unconscious and sweat has begun to cascade down the side of her face. Her breathing is labored and she felt limp in his arms. His heart ached at the thought of her in pain.

“This is all my fault!” Max wailed as his anger bubbled to the surface. “I did this to her.”

“You saved her Max.” Alex said as he cradled Isabel against him.

“I condemned her to something she didn’t get to choose. I have done nothing but cause her pain.” Max said almost whispering as he stroked Liz’s damp hair.

“You’re in shock, Maxwell. A lot has happened. I think you just need some time to process everything before you do or say something you don’t mean.” Michael said as he reached down and tugged lightly on Max’s arm. He paused before adding, “Now come with me. Let’s get some air.”

“No, Michael. I want to stay here. If she has another episode, I need to be here for her.”
Max is in a complete daze now. He picked Liz up lightly before finally placing her gently on the bed.

“But Max, Tess is probably worried about you.” Isabel stated, trying to get her brother away from the situation. She knew that Tess would be hurt by the way Max is acting towards Liz. Yet she felt for her distraught brother. She knew that Liz still held his heart captive and that he had never let her go, not really.

“Isabel, I won’t leave her again.” Max stated, as he took a seat next to Liz on the bed. Everyone in the room could see that Max was adamant at staying by Liz’s side. He placed a shaking hand on hers as the last hint of tears finally fell. “She needs me.” Max stated, in almost an inaudible voice.

Maria approached Michael and wrapped her shaking arms around him. He kissed the top of her head in comfort. “Let’s just give him a little time. It’s been a very long, emotional night.” She said as she gently pulled him toward the door. Isabel, after taking a glance back at Max, took Alex’s hand and followed quietly and shut the door.

The woman dialed the very familiar number, furious at today’s outcome. Someone was going to pay and it wasn’t going to fall back on her shoulders. “Insulate fools!” She said to herself as the line rang.

“Yes.” Came the response on the other end.

“You promised me that everything would go as planned.” The woman spat through the receiver.

“I……I am not sure what you mean? The activator went off just like you planned. How was I to know that she would not have called King Zan and instead she relied on Commander Rath? That is not my fault.” The voice on the other end answered.

“DON’T TELL ME WHAT IS AND ISN’T YOUR FAULT!” The woman yelled. She was so tired of excuses. She was not going to let this mission fall apart. She had worked too long and hard to see it all go to shit because of one lousy miscalculation. She took a deep breath before she continued, “You see we now have a situation. Liz is exhibiting powers. You told me that it would enhance Max’s alien side, so why is it giving HER powers!”

The voice on the other end was quiet when it answered, “That is an unexpected development. We didn’t plan for that.”

”Exactly! Now we are treading on uncharted territory here. Our deal with Kivar was exact. We had to plant the artifacts and the fake copy of the book where Liz could have access and get Max there. The object was supposed to be used on him.” The woman answered, starting to panic a little.

“I will have to ponder that a little, but for now stay close to them and report to me any new developments as soon as they occur. Don’t draw attention to yourself. You have to stay calm. All will work itself out in do time, my dear Tess.” The voice on the other end said calmly.

“It better, or when I get back to our planet and Kivar, you’ll be the first one punished for your insolence!” Tess said as she hung up the phone.

The voice on the other end of the phone heard the line go dead. A chuckle escaped lightly as it stated, “Yes, my dear…..everything is going to work out just as Kivar has planned. Too bad you won’t be around to see the final result.”
____________________________________________________________________________________________

Max glanced down, watching Liz stir slightly. He reached over, taking the blanket from the end of the bed and laid it over her gently. He noticed how peaceful she slept and a flicker of peace calmed him. He smiled slightly, remembering how many times he had dreamed of again being so close to her.

“I am here, Liz.” He whispered as he laid down next to her, draping his arm around her, breathing in her scent.

Liz felt a sense of calm wash over her as a familiar arm pulled her close and she opened her eyes slightly. She blinked twice before she was able to focus on him. She smiled slightly as she met the hazel eyes of Max Evans. His heart skipped a beat as he watched her eyes open and he stroked her cheek tenderly.

Her throat was dry and voice was raspy as she tried to speak, “Max…..is everyone ok?”

“All is well for now.” His fingers lightly brushed her hair back and Liz watched as he laid a gentle kiss on her forehead. Her heart pounded against her aching chest. It had been so long since she had been this close to him and felt his arms around her, protecting her.

She placed her hand tenderly on his chest, where she felt the hammering of his heart against her quivering hand. She closed her eyes and took in the essence of him and was overwhelmed by the sentiments that stirred deep inside her. A small sob escaped her lips as the feelings she had kept bottled in all this time, bubbled to the surface. The wall she had in place crumbled and she just couldn’t deny her feelings anymore. She was tired of running from him and her heart.

“I missed you Max.” Liz spoke softly as Max gently placed a finger to her cheek soothingly wiping away the shedding tears from her now tear stained face. She weakly reached up and pulled him down to her, laying a small, chaste kiss on his lips. She pulled back and met his tearful eyes.

“Stay with me?” she asked. Her head knew it was wrong to put her out there, him being with Tess and all, but her heart could not deny the yearning to be with him, even if it was just for tonight.

Max ached for her. His body temperature rose slightly at the thoughts invading his mind. He couldn’t deny the sensations that were coming to life after lying dormant for so long. He knew in his head that it was wrong, but his heart only craved Liz Parker. He had almost lost her again twice tonight. That thought only devastated him. He couldn’t live without her, not after just finding her again. How could he deny her anything?

He leaned in and touched her lips with his, igniting the growing passion welling up inside both of them. Max could feel her, touch her, taste her and it was driving him mad. Their shared connection was overpowering and their souls were hungry and yearning after all the years of starvation and separation.

Liz’s mind was clouded and she was pulled into the flames of passion ignited by Max’s lips and she couldn’t stop herself as her hands moved slowly up under his shirt. She gently caressed his chest and a moan escaped his lips. Her soft touch on his skin sent shivers down his back and he was drowning in a sea of desire.

Max could feel a pull to Liz that he couldn’t explain. It was undeniable how being near her made him feel. His fingers trailed down her arms resting on her waist as her hands pulled him down to her. The temptation to give in to the building lust was almost too much for him.

He pulled away slightly to look into her eyes. “Liz…..should we be doing this? I mean……” He started to say as she placed a finger to his lips to stop him in mid sentence.

“Max, I have never stopped waiting for you.” She stated as she smiled slightly. “It was always you, Max.”

Max watched her face closely and could see the glint of tears in her eyes, willing him to accept her once again. He could always read her eyes and now they radiated her love for him. He smiled as their foreheads touched and their eyes only saw each other. He spoke, breathlessly, “You are my heart, Liz Parker.”

His resolve to hold back was cracking and he could feel the tears trying to well up in his eyes yet again as the overwhelming emotion of the past years came to the surface. “I can’t pretend anymore that I can live without you. I am so tired of living a lie.” He swallowed hard, holding back the tears as he took her hand in his and kissed it tenderly. “You make me human. Without you, I am a hollow shell. I don’t want to feel empty anymore.”

Liz laughed nervously before she spoke, “I would have never thought in a million years that I would fall hopelessly in love with an alien king. You took my heart as soon as you healed me, Max Evans and I never got it back.” Liz placed her free hand on his heart and sighed before adding, “Funny thing is, even after everything, I don’t want it back.”

Max was overjoyed and closed the distance between them again. There lips drank up the time they both had missed and their hands roamed each other, each one filling up the hole in their hearts. Neither one felt it happen and was overwhelmed as the flashes came.

Max saw Liz’s life. He saw her friendship with a girl he didn’t recognize. She had been a good friend to her. He saw her high school years and the bittersweet graduation ceremony, where she longed to be home with them instead of in Florida. He was overwhelmed with her emotions as he felt her heart break when she boarded the plane to Florida knowing she was not returning to Roswell or him. He felt her growing anguish as she sat on the beach, night after night, mourning the loss of her soul mate and the devastating realization that she could not move on or live without him.

Liz saw a beaten Max, as she ran from him that day at the Pod Chamber. She felt his devastation as months went by and he didn’t hear from her. She saw memories of his despair as he shut down mentally and physically barricaded himself in his room for months, refusing to live without her. She saw how Tess had been a friend for him to lean on but how his feelings for her never went any further that admiration for who she was in their past lives. Liz felt the torture Max put himself through everyday knowing that his alien side had driven her away. That feeling was then replaced with pure joy as she saw herself in his eyes when he found her on the beach and realized he’d found her.

Then the images changed.

Eight people stand around a large metal machine. A tall, dark haired man dressed in very elegant dress places two keys into this machine and the petite, blonde haired woman standing next to him reaches out, placing her hand on one of the keys, before they turn them. The humming stops and they turn to the others, who are all gathered around. All eight of them look panicked and petrified.

A dark haired woman steps forward, taking the hand of the tall man and smiles weakly. “Time is of the essence. We know what we have to do, now.” The tall man gently lays a kiss upon that hand as he quickly turns his head to the noises that are vibrating off the chamber walls.

Three men run into the room, securing the door. A tall, sandy haired man from the group walks towards them with a short, blonde woman by his side. They speak with the new comers before motioning for the others to follow. “We must go now. “The tall, sandy haired man says as he takes the blonde woman’s hand.

They all run out of the room, leaving the tall, dark haired man standing there. He pulls the keys out, placing them inside a book. He exits the room after the others, waiving his hand over the lock, sealing its entrance. “May Dana have mercy on our souls and protect us all.” He says as he turns making his way down a small, cramped corridor.

The eight are now in a small, cramped area where an older woman stands. The dark haired gentleman takes her hands in his and leans in, kissing her cheek gently. His eyes look tired and she places a light kiss on his forehead. “You have done all you can. I will be safe. Larek will get me to safety with the Granolith. I will protect it with my life and pray for you to return to me safely.” He embraces her before handing her the book that he had tucked underneath his arm.

Tears are falling freely from her eyes as he kisses her on her cheek for probably the last time. She reaches out for the tall, blonde girl. She leans in and kisses the older woman and embraces her. The waterfalls pouring from her eyes are devastating to the group as they also began to cry, knowing that fate would probably not be on their side this time.

“Please be careful,” the girl says as she pulls away. “Je taime vi.”

The older woman looks at the group through tear filled eyes as she speaks looking at each one with love, taking their hands in hers, one at a time, “Zan and Karinah…Valendra and Galan…Rath and Meira…Ava and Kilan, you will be the great hope for our planet. Maybe not in this life, but in the one which is yet to be seen.”

She pauses as she hears the shouting and fighting getting closer. She drops her hands and steps back into the doorway. As it closes, her final words are heard. “Je taime vi and I will see you again, my children.”

The group of eight steps back and take one last look at the ship as they turn and frantically run down the ramp. The fighting has escalated and the tall, dark man turns to raise a green shield, trying to protect the others as they fight to get away. The short, dark haired girl is now holding onto his arm, fear evident in her eyes.

She glances in the direction of the sky as the mighty ship takes off and disappears. A single tear falls down her cheek as she faces her Destiny, knowing that it was just a matter of time before their lives would be over.

Liz and Max are both thrown back slightly as the connection breaks. Liz can feel the stickiness on her face from the tears that were still falling. She still felt the anguish in the short, dark haired girl’s heart and somehow feels a strong connection to her. She glanced up slightly to catch Max’s gaze.

He caught her confused gaze. He shakes his head, trying to grasp what he’d just seen. Max can feel the utter hopelessness that the dark haired man in the vision felt. Somehow he can feel a connection to him. It was almost as if he had been there, feeling what he was going through. “But that’s impossible!” He says to himself.

Panic began to fill Liz up again and the electric tingling can be felt on her hands. “Max?” Liz whispered as she raised her lightly glowing hands up to Max.

Max can feel her panic and he reached out, taking both of his hands in hers. He closed his eyes tight and spoke to her through their connection. “I am here.” He sends calming thoughts to her and Liz suddenly feels a warmth wash over her, pushing back down the urge to use her new found powers. But something just didn’t feel right.

A quick flash rushed them again, except this time they see the faces of each other where the strangers were before. Isabel, Maria, Tess, Kyle, Michael and Alex are there too. Then as quick as it came, they are thrown back out and into reality.

“Zan?” Liz said out loud, almost in disbelief. Her mind is trying to grasp at the pictures still flipping through her mind. “What is going on Max?” she stated frantically.

Max looking down now meets Liz’s eyes. The aura Max usually recognized as Liz’s has now changed. Conflict and disbelief fills his already confused state as he realized she is speaking his name. “Karinah?”

Liz is shocked as Max speaks the name from their shared vision. Fear climbs into her body, but she can feel the recognition in her soul. Something in her stirs as she recognized the name and realization hits her hard. “Max, we need to get the others now.”

Chapter 13

You could hear a pin drop in Liz’s bedroom where seven completely baffled people now sat in utter silence. No one knew what to say or even how to react to the images and flashes that Max and Liz described to them. Everyone was at a complete loss at what to do next.

Liz sat on her bed with her head hanging low, afraid to look up. She could feel the icy stare coming from the direction in which a furious and upset Tess Harding now sat. Her hands shook slightly causing her to shiver. She felt a soft material being laid over her shoulders and looked up to catch the gaze of Max. Just the minor caress of his fingers along her back send pulses through her body. She couldn’t explain how she felt at this moment, but something was different between them. It almost felt like they had melded into one individual.

He smiled slightly before finally slowing removing his hand away from her shoulder where he had laid the wool blanket from her bed. His voice whispered in her mind, “I am here now, Liz. We will figure this out together.”

She smiled back at him and nodded slightly before she finally looked over at the group. Maria and Michael were sitting on the floor at the foot of her bed. They were both staring at Liz and Max. Isabel and Alex were both curled up in the oversized chair across the room and a very agitated Tess stood in the doorway with her hands folded over her chest. She tapped her foot impatiently as she sent daggers across the room in Max’s direction.

Liz could still feel a slight pulsing through her body left over from the intense moment she had just shared with Max. She glanced back down at her shaking hand to pull the blanket tighter around her shivering body.

Without looking up she sensed movement in the room and instinctually knew who was approaching. She returned her gaze to the group and found her instincts were right on the money. Michael had stood up from his position on the floor all of the sudden and a quite confused looking Isabel stood up from the oversized chair that she was sitting on. As the two of them got closer the pulses that Liz felt in her body grew stronger.

“Something is different here Max.” Isabel stated as she sat on the foot of the bed next to him. “I am sensing something from Liz. It’s as if I recognize her. I can’t explain it, but I feel connected to her.”

Michael stood behind Isabel and uncomfortably shifted his stance. “I agree, Isabel. I feel a pull too. I think I felt it earlier after the incident in the lab. I just shook it off to a side effect of almost getting toasted in the lab, but there is something different about her.”

Liz glanced at the two aliens knowing that she felt exactly what they were talking about. The pull wasn’t as strong as the pull that she was feeling with Max, but definitely a different vibe was coming from them.

“I feel something too.” Liz answered as she averted their stares.

Tess finally spoke contempt clearly in her voice, “I don’t know what the hell is going on here, but I think you all are being influenced by something alien. I don’t feel anything coming off of her.” Tess said in a huff. “How do you know this isn’t some trick or ploy to get us all here? How do we know that Liz isn’t working for the enemy?”

The group turned in her direction and Max took a deep breath trying to suppress the bubbling anger towards Tess before speaking. “Tess, I know that you are angry about what has transpired tonight but there is no need to go accusing Liz of things that she certainly is not capable of.”

Tess stomped her foot and her eyes flashed with a slight hint of hostility before she took a deep breath to calm her overwhelming emotions, but her words didn’t mask the fury that she had towards Liz. “Max, are you out of your mind! You defend her, even after she left you high and dry in Roswell with a broken heart because she couldn’t handle your life.”

“You shut your mouth, Tess!” Maria screamed as she quickly stood up. Michael stepped towards her, grabbing her arm to keep her from hitting Tess. “You have no idea what the hell you are talking about. You have no idea how hard it was for Liz to leave and her reasons why she did it.” Hot tears were running down her face. “You should be grateful to her.”

Tess laughed slightly. “Grateful for what? We don’t need her. We have survived fine without her in our lives.” She paused, as a smirk appeared on her face before she bitterly added, “After all she’s the one that abandoned us. What do we owe her?”

Liz’s anger and jealousy towards the petite blonde overtook her and before she realized what she was doing she threw her hand out at Tess. A green electric bolt flew from her hands and hit the wall next to Tess. Before the others could react Liz had made her way towards Tess and was now holding Tess up in the air with her newly developing powers.

Green electricity was jumping from Liz and her words came out in a hiss as she spoke to a now terrified blonde. “You owe me nothing?” Liz spat as the anger inside grew and she squeezed her hand in a fist and the others watched a frantic Tess grab at her throat as she gasped for air.

“Max?’ Isabel said nervously. She was afraid to move and not sure how to proceed. She watched as Liz turned her head slightly towards Tess to regard her. The fury in her face sent chills down Isabel’s spine. Then she gasped at the sight of Liz’s eyes. “Max, Liz’s eyes…they’re…they’re black…alien black.”

Michael instinctually pulled Maria behind him for protection. Liz was oozing with utter disdain and he could feel the conflict in her. “Max, she’s loosing it. We have to do something.”

Max advanced towards Liz, but she felt their presence and threw her other hand towards them, throwing them against the wall all the while tightening her grip on Tess. The most heart-wrenching sob came from her as she spoke. “How dare you say you owe me nothing, Tess Harding? You owe me EVERYTHING!”

The crimson color tears fell out of her coal black eyes and a whimper escaped Tess’s now bluing lips. Liz continued through her sobs. “Because of me you have your precious Max. I left Roswell so he could follow his destiny.”

Max’s voice filled Liz’s head, pleading, “Liz, we can fix this just let Tess down.”

Liz laughed through her tears and pushed Max out of her head. She spoke out loud, “Max. You can’t fix this. You can’t give me back the last five years of my life, can you? I left my friends…my family…my home for the two of you to follow your destiny. I left my life and the only man that I will ever love behind. And for what? I still somehow find myself pulled back in! And then this ungrateful Bitch has the nerve to accuse me of working for your enemies…”

Maria spoke up through her sobs, hoping to get through to her best friend. “Lizzie, please don’t do this. You don’t want to kill Tess.”

When Liz didn’t answer, Maria stepped around Michael. He grabbed her by the arm, pulling her back, terrified that Liz would hurt her. She pulled away gently and nodded at him, reassuring him to let her take this chance. She slowly advanced towards Liz.

Liz felt the movement behind her and recognized Maria’s presence. “Maria, stay back!” She threatened.

“Liz, it’s me. If anyone knows what you have been through, it’s me.” The hot tears stained Maria’s cheeks black from her mascara and she was devastated for her friend. “I may not have been right beside you through this, but I never left you alone. I knew what sacrifices you were making and I never forgot you.”

“We never forgot you.” Alex added as he stood and headed in Liz’s direction. His heart was breaking for his friend. He now understood the sacrifices Liz had made and it tore him in two.

Max was at a loss for words. Liz’s confession troubled him. She had given up her entire life for him. Her self-sacrifice she felt was for the good of the group. She didn’t feel she had a place with them. Max reached out through their connection and was overwhelmed with the heart wrenching devastation that was left were Liz Parker’s soul used to be. The idea that his love for her had caused her this much pain broke his heart.

Max spoke, his voice breaking as his sadness for hurting her only built “I never forgot you, either Liz.”

Max’s words pierced Liz’s wall. She closed her eyes as the fiery tears continued to flow from her eyes. Max blinked back his tears and continued. “Liz Parker, not one day went by that I didn’t miss you, that I didn’t think about you. You were all I dreamed about and hoped for. You may have tried to forget me, but my heart will never forget you.”

The final brick of the wall around Liz’s guarded heart fell and the uncontrollable wave of hopelessness that had been locked away flowed through the surface. Liz collapsed to her knees, releasing a now unconscious Tess. Liz’s body shook wildly from the quiet sobs that she buried in her hands.

Isabel, Michael and Max were frozen to the floor. Images were filling their minds through the newly formed connection they had formed with Liz. They were filled with flashes of Liz’s life for the past few years. They could feel the overwhelming loneliness and longing the guided Liz’s every thought. They now had seen exactly how much she had endured just to protect them.

“Oh God, Max.” Isabel whispered through her tears. “Look what knowing us has done to her.”

Max reached out towards Liz, but was stopped by Maria. “I think everyone needs to leave us alone for a while.”

“But Maria, she needs me. I won’t abandon her again.” Max said through gritted teeth.

“You aren’t abandoning her Maxwell.” Michael added. “Let Maria be here for her. I think all we are doing is amplifying her pain through the connection. Let’s just give Maria some time to calm her down.”

Max nodded slightly before noticing that Tess was regaining consciousness. “I guess you are right, Michael. Besides I have a few things I need to settle with Tess first.”

Max walked over and helped Tess to her feet. “Thank you Max.” Tess said breathlessly.

Max grunted, “Don’t be thanking me yet Tess. We need to talk, now!”

He led her out of the room, followed by Michael and Isabel. Alex stood in the doorway feeling utterly useless. He watched as Maria knelt next to Liz and pulled her into her lap. Liz’s sobs continued and her body shook violently. Maria looked up with tear filled eyes, reaching out to Alex. “I can’t do this by myself Alex. I need you. Liz needs you too.”

Alex shook his head in understanding and he made his way over to his two best friends in the world. He wrapped his arms around them both and together the three of them cried. Cried for the loss of time that the choices of the past had caused them and cried for the unforeseen troubles that lied ahead of them. But in each other they found the comfort and innocence that was lost to them the day that Liz left. Together in each other’s arms they began to understand and heal the severed ties of their friendship.
