Chapter 11
Liz’s heavy eyes slowly opened. Blackness met her gaze and she squinted, trying to figure out where she was. She looked over and found her side table clock telling her it was 4:00 a.m.
She weakly tried to sit up, but as her head swam, she decided it would be best just to lay back and try and rest. She sighed slightly to herself. She was not ready to face the crowd she knew was now present in her home. Her cover was now blown and there was going to be no more hiding from her past and Max.
Max….if she concentrated hard enough she could still feel the heat on her lips from the searing kiss they had shared on the beach not too many hours ago. So many questions about that bittersweet moment clouded her mind. She still could not wrap her mind around how he had found her. It was like fate had brought him to her, even after all the time she had spent running from him. Now she couldn’t run anymore.
Liz closed her eyes and reached out and found the reignited connection with Max. It had been so long since she had felt that part of her heart warm. She had gotten used to the icy cold that had been lying there for the last several years and for the first time in a long time; she didn’t feel cold on the inside. She was filled with the warmth that she had not even realized she had been searching for.
“Oh god, how do I face him after all this time?” Liz thought out loud to herself.
She heard a rustle in the corner and immediately grabbed the covers to her chin. Her heart began to race and she was petrified. The voice that spoke back immediately calmed her.
“First you rest, then you deal with Max Evans.” Maria quietly called from the over sized chair across the room. She had refused to leave Liz’s side after Michael had told the others what had transpired at the lab. She didn’t want anything to happen to her and was just so happy to be here with her friend after four years.
Liz smiled at the sound of her best friend’s voice. Hot tears began to fill her eyes. She hadn't realized how much she had missed Maria. “Hey Ria.”
Maria rose out of the chair and made her way over to Liz’s side. Tears were slowly collecting in her eyes as she reached out for her friend and they embraced. “I’ve missed you chica.”
“I think I’ve missed you more.” Liz answered through her tears. She slowly let go of Maria and looked at her friend. The woman now sitting on the end of her bed was not the same girl she had left back in Roswell. That girl was now the strong, determined woman that she was looking at.
Maria watched as Liz looked at her. The shy, innocent girl she had grown up with in Roswell was now replaced with this independent, strong willed, stubborn woman with haunted eyes. Maria could see the depth of despair that lay in Liz’s eyes from the last few years of living away from her heart’s desire. It reminded her a lot of the haunted look Max had developed not long after Liz had left Roswell. The look had never gone away and Maria hoped that now that they were in the same radius of each other again, two of them could finally get closure to the pain that held them both back from living.
Maria smiled slightly. “So what’s this I hear about two certain someone’s finding their way back to each other by some mysterious goddess? Are you gonna kiss and tell girlfriend or do I have to yank it out of you?”
Liz blushed. “Maria, it’s a long story and I am really tired and….”
Maria held a finger up to her mouth. “Before you try to get out of this, you might like to know that Max is out in the living room freaking out, ok? He almost had a nervous break down at watching you like that, Liz. He’s worried about you. We all are. What the hell happened out there on that beach?”
Liz shook her head slightly trying to recall the situation that transpired out on the beach earlier. “The last thing I remember is seeing Max. Maria it was the strangest thing. I saw him and then I was being drawn to him. I felt like I was in a trance. I remember kissing him and feeling this instant flash, like a spark igniting a fire. I think it was our connection coming back to life. Then Michael showed up and that’s all I can recall, why?”
Maria looked at her friend. She saw the awful black circles under her eyes and could see confusion staring back at her. Did Liz really not know what she had done to Max? Maria swallowed hard and began to fill her in on what had transpired just a few hours ago.
“Well, the Cliff Notes version is you wigged out on the beach, sending green electricity firing at Max and Michael then passed out. You were burning up. And when I mean burning Liz, your insides were on fire! Max tried to heal you while you were unconscious and you attacked him with the green electricity and almost killed him. Liz, when did you get powers?”
Liz sat speechless. Had she really tried to kill Max? Was he hurt? She began to panic again. She grabbed the covers and tried to get up quickly. She had to find Max. She could feel a slight tingle in her hands. “Maria, where is Max?”
Maria went to reach out to stop her when she was a green light reflecting in the blackness of Liz’s bedroom. She gasped. “Liz, look at your hands.”
Liz held her hands out in front of her and saw the green electricity illuminating her hands. Terror filled her body and the growing fear only made the green on her hands stronger. She could feel herself loosing control of her senses. She tried to concentrate on holding back her fear, but she only began to be overwhelmed with the burning sensation that was now traveling up her arm.
Maria watched, careful as to not get too close to Liz. When she watched Liz collapse to her knees she screamed out as loud as she could. “MICHAEL!”
Michael bolted through the door with Isabel and Max right behind him. He could see Liz kneeling on the floor painfully trying to hold back the returning green electricity he had seen already too much tonight.
Max saw Liz on the floor in pain and tried to push through Michael. Isabel grabbed his shoulder, holding him back. “Remember what happened last time Max, please stay back.” She said in her most stern voice. But the hint of panic was still there.
Michael entered further into the room, doing his best to stay back from Liz. “Maria, what the hell happened?”
Maria backed up slightly and spoke, tears running down her face. “I’m not sure. We were talking about her almost killing Max and the next thing I know she got upset and then the green electricity returned.”
Max stepped forward and placed a hand on Michael’s shoulder. “Michael, what if this isn’t an adverse reaction from the pentagram but from me.”
Isabel spoke up now. “You mean the healing, Max?”
Max had an idea and he quickly side stepped Michael. Michael reached out and tried to grab Max, but was unable to get him before he was too close to Liz to shoot him.
“Damn it Max! What in the hell are you thinking. She could kill you!”
Max knelt down behind Liz. “Trust me guys. I am going to try something.” He closed his eyes and concentrated on the connection he shared with Liz. He could feel her building terror and panic as she tried to keep herself in control. He could see the power building up inside her but she didn’t know how to control it or how to release it.
Max spoke out loud to her. “Liz, can you hear me?”
“Max….” Came her weak reply. She was on the verge of loosing consciousness.
“Do you trust me Liz?”
“Yes……” came her reply. She could feel the burning sensation over her entire body.
“You have to release the power Liz. You have to let it go. Concentrate on Michael and release it when I say to.”
Liz was horrified. “I could kill him I can’t do that.”
“Trust me, Liz. Have faith in me.”
Liz nodded because she was too weak to even speak. Max looked over his shoulder and mentally spoke to Michael and Isabel. “When I say now, raise your shield. I think Liz is getting powers. She is not sure how to handle them and doesn’t know how to control them. She needs to release her green electricity which I think is similar to our blasting energy. I’m going to have her fire it at your shield.”
“Are you nuts Maxwell!” came Michael’s reply. “What if you’re wrong?”
“I don’t think we have much of a choice here Michael, please trust me. Is? Are you ok with this?” Maxwell answered back.
“I don’t see any other choice. I trust you Max.” Isabel reached out placing her hand on Michael’s shoulder and raised her hand out ready to raise her shield.
Maria watched the show in front of her petrified for her friends. She could do nothing but sit back and watch. “Michael?” She called out.
She heard his voice in her head. “Everything will be fine love. Please stand back.”
Maria inched back against the wall and could only pray for them as she watched Liz raise her now glowing arm towards Michael and Isabel.
“Now!”
She heard Max yell, prompting Liz to fire her power. She held her breath as she watched Michael and Isabel bring up their shield, bracing themselves for the impact.
