For a moment she looks taken back by my question.
"Oh she works at the Wreak" she answers with a smile. "You know, the hottest club in town"
“Yeah, I know it.” I say with another smile and nod.
Of course I know about The Wreak. Anybody who is anybody in this town knows about The Wreak and even those people who aren’t anybody know about it. Famous for its live bands and relaxed atmosphere, The Wreak is one of my favorite night hangout. Not that I get the chance to go out much at night and drinking is nearly always a big no. Being fit and healthy is part of my job description. And my coach is one mean son of a bitch.
“Wait,” I say as a thought occurs to me. “Are you talking about Serena Lawson?”

“Yeah, I know it.” he says and I give a little smile as I put the rest of my equipment away.
“Wait,” he says suddenly and I look at him.
“Are you talking about Serena Lawson?”
My eyes widen. "Yeah. Thats right" I say surprised. "How do you know Serena?" I ask. "Its a small world!"
How come she never told me she knew a nice guy like Kyle...hell if she wasnt with my brother, Id want her to be with a nice guy like him....

I can’t help but frown a little at Max. I know that he’s probably got a thousand and one things to think about with work and Maria but would it have killed him to be nice to Alex. Would it kill him to chat for a little while and make my cousin feel welcome? No, I don’t think.
"Have you even seen my place so far, Serena?" Alex asks, breaking the silence that had occurred because Max has his head up his own ass.
I nod, suddenly feeling slightly embarrassed. “I might have dropped in and had a quick look around the place.”
Now, should I admit that I had to lie a little to get the key or that I had even considered breaking in so that I could get a look at the house. In my defense, I only wanted to make sure that the house was livable for Alex and Seth.
“I left you some groceries and some other bits and pieces.” I say, hoping that Alex won’t question me about how I actually got into his new house. “Just doing my cousinly duty. And by the way, your next door neighbor is really cute and friendly. She said that she would stop by with a pie once you get all settled. Isn’t that nice?”

I smiled during Serena's small ramble but after the last sentence, I can't help but frown. I just arrived five minutes ago and she wants to set me up already? I know it has been three years but ... just because everyone else thinks that I have to move on, doesn't mean that I want to do so.
"Thanks Serena, that was very nice of you." I finally reply, still frowning at her. "But I'm sure you have lots of work with your club and I don't think you'll need to burden yourself even more with trying to find me a girl. I'm sure I can handle that on my own, when I want to."

I listen intently as Michael explains his reasonings for coming to the big apple, but when he asks his next question I nearly choke on my water. "So, is there a boyfriend or husband in the picture?" He asks, and I can tell he's curious but trying not to show it. I can read people occasionally too, though usually I have trouble doing so, which can lead to problems.
Unfortunately for me, I'm honest, brutally so at times, and I couldn't lie about not dating Max. I mean, not only is he a great guy, but I would feel horrible after, like I do every time I lie. I have a horrible concience. "Yes...I have a boyfriend, his name is Max." I answer truthfully, before closing my mouth. Hopefully he doesn't take that as a hint that I don't find him attractive or anything, because if I was single I'd totally be flirting heavily with him. I think any girl would had they been sitting where I am.
"Any significant other in your life?" I ask, though it doesn't really matter anymore. I'm just straining to continue a conversation, and it would be impolite not to ask him now, wouldn't it?

Crap, he is frowning at me. Maybe I should have tried to be subtle but really, I’ve never been able to do the whole subtle thing. The thing with being subtle is that it sometimes leads to confusions and then gets messy. I hate messes and I’ve never been very good with cleaning them up.
“Pfft, I wasn’t trying to set you up with her.” I lie with a roll of my eyes. “I was only saying how nice she is. Its important to have nice neighbors. And she was nice. If I wasn’t already half in love with my neighbors then I would like someone like her to live next door to me.”
Okay, so rambling is never a good sign. Can he tell that I’m lying? I hope not because that would really ruin all of my plans to see Alex happily coupled up again. And anyway, I’m not completely lying. I really don’t want to set Alex up with his neighbor. Not when I’ve got plenty of single friends. There’s Tess and Isabel. Hmmm and a couple of girls I know from the club but I don’t think that they are really mother/wife material.
“And of course,” I begin, deciding that a change of subject might be good. “I’m busy with the club, which may I add, you still have not seen. You better be planning to change that. I expect to see you in there one Saturday night, partying like the 27 year old party animal you are and don’t even think of giving me any babysitter excuses!”

I laugh at that. Man, it's been a while since I really partied ... must have been before Seth was born. Wonder if I still know how to party.
"Well, I of course would love to see your club ... I should even be allowed to see it when it is closed since I'm your favourite cousin in the world, I think. And ... well, I really don't know many people in New York so I'd really have some babysitter 'problems' at first."

"How do you know Serena?" She asks before adding, "Its a small world!"
“Yeah,” I agree with a smile, “It’s a very small world.”
Huh, sometimes New York can seem like the biggest and busiest place on earth and other times it can seem so small and suffocating. If it wasn’t for work, I don’t think that I could live here. I’d much rather live somewhere constantly quiet, where the pace of life is much slowly. Its so easy to get caught up in the small things when you live in a place like New York.
Serena Lawson is the type of person that thrives off the chaos of the city. The first time I ever met her, she was giving a six foot two footballer player a piece of her mind because he had disrespected one of her girls that work behind the bar and he was cowering like a schoolboy. I’ve never seen anything like it before and I was in awe.
She was also one of the few girls ever to turn me down and that was somewhat refreshing after the bruise on my ego had faded.
“I met her at the club,” I say, deciding not to add that I had tried hitting on her. It probably wouldn’t be a good thing to admit to her boyfriend’s sister. “We sometimes hang out at the VIP section if she isn’t busy. You know, I don’t think I’ve ever seen you at the club.”

“Why?” I ask raising an eyebrow when Alex says that he should be allowed to see the club when it is closed. “So that you can use that as an excuse never to see it when its open? I don’t think so buddy.”
I grin because Alex didn’t try and make any excuses. That’s gotta be progress, baby. Maybe he is on the road back to romance. All he needs now is the right girl, one that I will be more than happy to produce. Maybe I should drag Tess over here now or phone Izzy up and make her come home.
“And don’t worry about a babysitter. I can sort it all out. One of my club promoters has a little sister. She is seventeen and a totally sweetheart. Seth would love her. And talking of Seth, how much sleep does that boy need? I want to smother him with love so I’ll make you a deal, you wake up Seth and I’ll wake up Zan.”
Alex doesn’t look too impressed by my offer.
“I’m kidding,” I say, quickly. “Of course, I was kidding.”

“Liz!”Tess exclaims clearly glad to see me. She ushers me in with a gentle wave eyeing my suitcase with caution. I think she's actually afraid it will bite her. Yes, it is a tad old, but I've had it for ever major event in my life. It's a good luck charm. I notice a hint of fresh bread looming in the air. Mmmm.
“Come in, come in.” she takes the luggage in her hand dispite her obvious adversion to it and smiles. "I'm so glad that you're here. Did you find us okay?"
I nod scanning the room to find it realitvely spotless. "Yes, I found everything perfect."
Turning to her I admire her energy as she flutters about the room,
"The place looks great. Maria raved about how gorgeous it was ,but she greatly underestimated it's value."
It's true the place is quite beautiful, and quite a find in New York City.
"By the way when will Ris be in?" I inquire while skimming my fingertips along the counter.
