Isabel joins us at the table, and I almost smile. Wow, usually I spend lunch time alone. Don't get me wrong. Isabel and I sit together when we can ,but a lot of the time she stays after class to do bonus assignments or homework.
Which is fine ,because I like sketching the people at our school. In fact I have a whole notebook under my bed back at the trailer devoted to mysterious faces of people I ahve never spoken to. Funny how I have never drawn Michael. His chiseled cheek bones are most interesting.
He must have caught me staring at him, because he leans forward and says,
"Maria, that was a really great picture."
Dismisssing the work entirely I state cooly,
"It was just a doodle nothing special." I give Kyle a taunting look s I grab a back of his potato chips. He starts to argue, but my look tells him he owes me one.
He relents and I tear into the bag gratefully.
