"Anything?" I asked, laughing a little. "Well, you asked for it. I grew up in a small town a little ways south of here. My parents were wonderful; they gave me everything I could ever want," I laughed, feeling nostalgic. "I remember when I asked my dad if he would teach me the things that men learned. I was so fascinated by the idea that I didn't give up, and he was never one to deny me anything. So while I learned to sew and cook from my mother, my father was teaching me about philosophy, physics, biology, and mathematics." I came back to the present. "Later on I figured that if I couldn't be beautiful, I could at least be intelligent and educated," I said, standing up and moving to look out the window.I replied with a slient thank you...and looked at her motions--the way her eyes looked into mine, the way her hair fell on her face and she quickly pulled it behind her ear. "Tell me anything...about where you grew up... or your parents--what do you love most in the world? Anything Miss Parker." I smiled at her, and waited for her reply.

Max:
"You are beautiful Liz--you are the most beautiful woman I've ever seen." I smiled at her as she walked to the window. " I like an independent woman, I don't see why women have to to treated differently than men. I was the complete opposite growing up, all my days were dedicated to studies and I didn't want any of it. My mothers had to force me into the study area, because I'd be playing hid and seek with the servants--and I wounldn't come out until she called me." I looked down at my hands and remembered my mom. " My father would be furious, but my mother she would try not to laugh. I miss her smile... I miss her so much--our family was never the same once she passed on, my Dad always seems not whole...almost as if a part of him was missing. The laughter stopped on that day, and my father and I haven't seen eye to eye on anything since then." I looked up and she was staring at me. "I'm sorry for being a jerk Liz, It's just being raised by a man that dosen't care about anyone but himself and having to raise your self is difficult on anyone, why it had to be me...I'm still trying to figure that one out." I sighed.

"I...I--" I didn't know what to say. Was it a trick? A ruse of some sort? But I could tell that it wasn't; he looked truly sad as he talked about his family's problems. Deciding to take a chance and believe Max, I ventured, "Bad things happen to good people, Max. Usually, there isn't a reason, and trying to find one just makes it hurt more." I moved back over to him, but didn't turn to face him.
"I know this will seem downright shallow compared to what you've just said, but it's the only way I can relate," I started, fidgeting with my hands. "My mother and father always loved me, and I never had to go through the pain of losing them, but everyone else... hated me. And not because I was a horrible or unruly child, oh no, it was because of the way I looked. All my life, I've been teased, picked on, and even had my parentage questioned." I took a deep breath and continued. "I wondered for so long what I had done to deserve it, but in the end I came up with nothing. And maybe neither of us did anything at all; maybe it was just supposed to happen the way it did." I reached out and grabbed his hand. "Maybe there's a reason." I whispered.
