Part 1.
“So cornball” Ava said softly as she smiled at Liz, walking away from the petit brunette with a wave. Ava smiled sadly as she started walking, her thoughts on Liz. She smiled as she hefted her bags up slightly, wondering where to go. Heading towards the highway, she tightened her jacket around her body as a cool breeze skittered over her bare stomach. She sighed heavily. For better or worse, she was on her own now, and she had to learn to accept that.
Ava’s thoughts drifted back to Liz, her mouth tightening slightly as she recalled what Liz had told her about Max and Tess. She suspected that Max was cheating on her with Tess, but lacked the proof to confront them. Mean while Max was crucifying her for trying to save them, by sacrificing her own happiness and her friendships so that Tess would stick around. Ava shook her head in amazement, Liz having told her about future Max, and what he had made her do. Ava wasn’t sure if she could be that noble.
Ava shrugged slightly. She’d check in on Liz occasionally, make sure she was ok. If she weren’t, Ava would come back for her. The human girl had helped her, with no questions or recriminations just because she happened to look like her dupe. Ava paused slightly at the thought of her dupe, sending a silent prayer upwards that Max would fare better than Zan had.
Tears welled in her eyes as she thought of Zan. He had been destined for greatness, and he had died like he was nothing but trash in the street. He was always carrying the weight of the world on his shoulders, but he’d had a wicked sense of humor. Yet at the same token, he could be down right cruel, especially when it came to protecting his family. Pity they hadn’t felt the same way. Ava thought of the way his dark eyes had always been so deep, and the way they would darken with desire, hatred or amusement. Dark brown with tiny flecks of silver near the center. Honest eyes. Eyes you could fall into. Eyes she’d never see again.
Taking a deep breath, she hardened her heart, knowing that she had to move quickly to escape Lonnie and
Rath. If Lonnie was anything like Vilandra, she would insist that Rath come back to look for her, making sure there were no loose ends. Ava paused on the outskirts of town, lighting a cigarette, as she looked both ways. One way was the past, the other was the future. Ava exhaled slowly, before turning towards her future. She walked along quickly, singing softly to herself, unaware that she’d been spotted.
A car pulled off the road suddenly, spraying gravel across Ava’s feet as it pulled to a stop in front of her, blocking her path as it skidded to a stop. Ava looked at the car in surprise, horror filling her heart when she saw Rath grinning at her from the driver’s seat of the stolen car they had come to Roswell in. Ava’s mouth formed a small circle as she started backing away slowly, fear bouncing off her in waves. Rath climbed out of the car, and Ava turned and bolted. She heard the clink of chains as someone started chasing her, screaming when strong arms caught her around the waist.
She screamed again as the person picked her up off the ground, Ava struggling wildly as she tried to break free. Warm breath skittered across her bare shoulder, followed by the tickle of facial hair. “Aves, calm da hell down, it’s me. It’s ok,” a voice said in her ear, the husky tones causing her breath to catch in her throat. She turned to look over her shoulder, a tear spilling down her pale cheeks when she saw warm brown eyes, which were filled with a mixture of worry and amusement. “Zan?” she whispered, watching as he smirked at her slowly. He let her slid out of his arms, her small hand reaching out slowly to touch his face. “Yeah, it’s me.”
Ava took a step away from him, her face pale with fear. “How do I know ya ain’t no skin or some damn mind warp?” she spat, eyeing Lonnie and Rath who were leaning against the car. Zan smirked, reaching out to haul her quickly into his arms, his mouth clamping down on hers hard before she could speak. His tongue dipped into her mouth while his hands roamed her arse, before he abruptly let her go. Ava stared at him, knowing he was real. No one else could kiss like that. Her mouth tightened suddenly, and she slapped the smirk from his face. “Ya got some damn explainin to do,” she hissed. Zan nodded as she stomped towards the car.
Lonnie stood up straight as Ava stalked towards the car, feeling the fury and hurt rolling off her in waves. She shared a quick look with Rath, before looking back at Zan. “Aves..” she started, stunned into silence when Ava turned on her. “Back off Vilandra” she spat, her whole body ridged with anger. Lonnie blinked, her eyes widening at the reference to their past lives. Rath smirked. “See ya went and grew a pair Aves” he chuckled. Ava walked over and grabbed his face in her hands. Rath cried out as she forced a connection, letting her pain and grief since Zan’s ‘death’ roll into him.
Ava let him go, watching in silence as he dropped to his knees, Rath gagging as he tried not to vomit. “Aves..” Zan said softly, wincing when she turned to face him. “Don’t ‘Aves’ me Zan. How could ya keep this from me? How could ya let me think ya were dead? I thought we were a family, but I guess I was wrong. I don’t know any of ya anymore.”
Zan crossed the distance between them, grabbing her arm as she started to walk away. Spinning her back to face him, he put his face near hers. “We didn’t tell ya coz Niko would have destroyed ya mind if he thought ya knew da truth. None of us were willin to let that happen, so we kept ya in da dark, knowin that if he did get a hold of ya, he couldn’t find da truth. We were tryin to protect ya.” Ava snorted, rolling her eyes in mock amusement. Zan shook her roughly, her head snapping back and forward a few times, before she wrenched out of his grip. She took a step away from him, tears threatening to well in her eyes.
Zan saw her lower lip tremble slightly, knowing he had to push hard to make her crack. “He would have not only mind raped ya Aves, but he would have let his family and friends take turns in bouncin on that sweet arse of yours. He was gloatin to Rath and Lon about how much he was lookin forward to tryin out da royal bride, before he gave her to Kivar. We had no choice. He would have destroyed ya mind and ya body, before killin ya. And I’ll be fucked if ya think I was gonna let that happen.”
Ava’s eyes widened slowly as Zan yelled at her, images floating through her mind as she tried to calm down. She fought to breathe, her throat closing as she started to hyperventilate, Zan realizing he had pushed
her too hard. Grabbing her again, he forced her head back, opening their connection easily. Ignoring the images he saw, he sent her a wave of reassurance, feeling her tremble under his hands. He was pushed out suddenly, blinking as he looked down at her face. A single tear rolled down her cheek, followed by another. Zan pulled her into his arms, cradling her head in his hand as she broke down.
Her tears soaked his shirt, Zan kneeling down with her in his arms when her knees buckled under her. Pulling her into his lap he let her cry, feeling her small hands clutch his shirt, her whole body shaking with the harsh sobs that tore through her slender body. Zan glanced up at Lonnie and Rath. Lonnie had her hand pressed over her mouth, her face white with guilt. Rath was still suffering from the forced invasion of his mind, as well as the knowledge that they had all been lying to her for the past two years, letting her think that he and Lonnie were something that they weren’t. Monsters.
The sky darkened, the stars slowly appearing in the night sky. Zan continued to rock Ava in his arms, rubbing her back slowly with the palm of his hand. She grew quiet, her soft hick ups fading as she finally fell asleep, grief and lack of sleep taking over. Rath helped him to his feet, Lonnie already in the back seat. Passing Ava into the back seat, Zan watched as Lonnie pulled her into her arms, letting her sleep with her head on her lap, stroking her fingers gently through her streaked hair. Grabbing a blanket, Rath reached in to tuck it around her body, before sliding into the passenger seat. Zan started the car, leaving skid marks on the ground as he did a u-turn to head for home, knowing that the worst was over, and that they could only heal from here.
Part 2.
Four months later.
Liz stared up at the sky with out really seeing it. Tears had long since dried up, and she no longer had the energy to cry. A scuffle at the alley below her caught her attention, and she watched with emotionless eyes as Kyle’s head appeared. He climbed over the edge of the balcony, silent as they stared at each other. He moved towards her quietly, sitting down beside her on the lounge chair and dropping his arm around her shoulder.
Neither of them heard the bedroom door open, Jeff Parker sighing softly as he watched his daughter rest her head on her friends chest. It had become a familiar scene in the last few weeks, Jeff understanding that they sought and found comfort in each other. He closed the door quietly, leaving them to their solitude. Jeff sighed again, knowing that he was once more loosing his daughter for the summer. He wandered back down the hallway, picking the phone up and calling Jim to let him know Kyle was once more at their place.
Liz closed her eyes, Kyle talking quietly. “I used to love looking at the stars, but I hate them now” he murmered, Liz nodding as she listened to the steady thump of Kyle’s heartbeat. Kyle fell silent as he rested his head against Liz’s, both of them silent in the quiet of the night. Kyle sighed softly, feeling the familiar wetness soaking his shirt as Liz cried silently. “I hate this,” she whispered, Kyle nodding.
“I feel like I can’t breathe Kyle. I feel like I’m dying,” she whispered, Kyle gently tilting her chin up as she stared at him. Kyle’s breath hitched in his throat as he stared at her. “We’re just broken Liz. We’ll heal in time” he murmered, Liz shaking her head. Kyle felt a tear slide down his cheek, and he watched as Liz reached up to wipe it away. “It’s gonna be ok Liz. I’m not gonna leave ya” he whispered.
Liz licked her lips slowly, before reaching up to press her lips against his gently. Kyle froze, pulling away slightly. “What are ya doin Liz?’ he murmered. Liz shuddered slightly, before pulling his head back down to hers, rubbing her lips against his. Kyle groaned, tracing her lips with his tongue. She opened to him, their tongues finding a familiar rhythm, and they fell back into the way they had been so long ago.
Kyle shifted slightly, cradling her head as the kiss deepened naturally. Liz lifted her mouth from his slowly, reaching behind her to lower the back of the chair some more, lying down when it was tilted the way she
wanted it to be. Her dark hair spread out over the chair, Kyle’s eyes darkening slightly as she pulled his head back to hers. The kiss deepened again, Liz pulling him down fully onto her body.
She arched under him as he trailed his hand slowly down the length of her slender body, lifting her knees to cradle him either side of his hips. Kyle groaned softly, Liz pulling his tee shirt up and over his head. Her small hands ran across his bare shoulders, her long nails scrapping the skin as she wiggled slightly. Kyle groaned again, his mouth leaving hers as he trailed his lips down the smooth column of her neck, his teeth nibbling on her collarbone as she sighed softly in his ear.
Kyle ran his hands down her bare thighs, feeling the skirt she was wearing bunch around her hips as he pushed it up slowly. Reaching between them, he stroked her gently, Liz giving a strangled moan. Kyle hissed when he felt the dampness through her panties, nudging the damp material aside as he stroked her again. Liz bucked under his touch, Kyle groaning softly as he slid his other hand up her top. He shaped her breast with his hand, his fingers stroking and building warmth as Liz twisted and gasped.
“Kyle please, don’t stop,” she whispered in his ear, her nails digging into his back. Kyle pulled away slightly, his breaths coming out in sharp pants. “Liz what are we doin?” he whispered, shuddering as she pushed him up off her body slightly. Reaching between them, she unbuckled his belt, and undid his pants. His hardness sprang free, Liz panting as she ran her small hand over his length.
Looking up at him, she swallowed slightly, before speaking quietly. “He got her pregnant Kyle. I don’t want to make the same mistake.” Kyle groaned when her meaning became clear, reaching into his back pocket for his wallet as he knelt up. Grasping her panties, he tugged them down her body, dropping them on his shirt as he reached for her top. Liz lifted her arms, letting him pull her tank top free, the top joining the steadily growing pile of clothes.
Pulling a condom free of his wallet, Kyle made short work of it, pushing his pants further down as Liz spread her thighs for him. He stroked her opening gently, feeling the liquid warmth that was gathering, before nestling between her thighs. Grasping himself, he entered her slowly, gritting his teeth at how tight she was. He pushed forward strongly, hearing Liz gasp suddenly.
Looking down at her, he was horrified to see a single tear slide down her cheek. “Liz?” he whispered uncertainly. Liz smiled sadly. “I’m ok Kyle. Keep going,” she whispered. He nodded, moving slowly as she tentatively lifted her hips to meet his. Grabbing her knee, he lifted it higher as he strained against her, his head resting beside hers as she gasped in his ear.
Kyle nipped her shoulder, nudging the strap of her bra aside as she moaned softly in his ear. He could feel his release approaching, and Valenti pride took over. Reaching between them, he felt and found her clit, rubbing the small bundle of nerves. Liz froze then moaned loudly, Kyle grunting softly as he thrust harder. He could feel small tremors running through her body, groaning as he manipulated her body to where he was going.
Liz panted harshly in his ear, biting down on his shoulder hard as her orgasm tore through her violently. Kyle bit back a small scream of pain, closing his eyes as he thrust hard into her quaking body. His release tore through him, leaving his body jerking slightly as he slowly came down. Minutes ticked slowly by, Kyle finally lifting his head. “You were a virgin,” he stated, Liz nodding.
Kyle groaned, dropping his head down beside hers. “I don’t want any thing from you Kyle. I just wanted to feel,” she whispered, watching as he pulled away from her and jerked his pants up. Kyle closed his eyes, bending down to grab his tee shirt. Pulling it on, he turned to look at her. She was still sprawled on the chair, her skin flushed and covered in a light sheen of sweat.
Kyle bit his lip, before speaking quietly. “Liz, believe me, I know how you feel. I live with her remember. I know what you are going through. But we didn’t make love Liz and now I feel even worse. Don’t drop to her level. He’s not worth it. You are.” Liz swallowed. “Then why didn’t you stop?” she whispered. Kyle managed a small smile. “Coz I wanted to feel too.” Liz dropped her eyes, before bursting into tears. Kyle
swore softly, dropping to the chair beside her and gathering her in close. “It’s gonna be ok Liz. You’ll see,” he said, feeling her nod against his shoulder as she sniffled.
Liz lifted her head, and spoke quietly. “I’m leaving town for the summer Kyle. I’m packed and ready to go. I leave in the morning.” Kyle sighed. “Where we going?” he murmered. Liz smiled at him sadly. “New York. My cousin Sam lives there. It’s big enough to get lost in,” she whispered. Kyle nodded. “Give me an hour and I’ll be ready to go” he said. Liz looked at him closely. “You’re serious aren’t you” she whispered. Kyle grinned. “Schools out, no football camp this year, and Tess is pregnant with Max’s kid. Hell yeah I’m serious.” Liz nodded, smiling as they made plans.
Part 3.
Zan shifted on the couch, Rath cheering quietly as he scored in the hockey game he was playing. Zan shook his head, looking up at the freshly changed ceiling. When they had returned to the city, he and Rath had secured an old loft through Larek, using their powers to fix the place up. Lonnie had helped when she could, but she mainly kept her eyes on Ava. Zan sighed softly at the though of Ava.
She had remained catatonic for nearly six weeks, the three of them taking shifts at watching over her. It had been Zan who was with her when she finally woken up, her large eyes filling with tears as she stared at him. They had just moved into the loft, and when she looked around, she realized her old life had died with the warp, and that things had defiantly changed for the better.
Ava had been very weak for nearly two months, living on soup and toast before shifting up to more solid food. Someone had been with her every step of the way, helping her eat, helping her bathe. She had only just started to use her powers again, a sign she was finally better. The friendship and feelings of family had taken a serious battering, but they had slowly mended, and things were great between all of them now.
Zan sighed again. The only problem left was that Ava was keeping something from all of them. They could all feel it, and Zan was wondering who or what had caused the small rift. Ava remained tight-lipped about her time in Roswell, and Zan wondered if it had any thing to do with that. Zan shrugged slightly. Ava would tell them when she was good and ready.
A scream tore through the silent loft suddenly, Zan bolting to his feet and towards Ava’s room. Rath tripped over the cord on his game unit, falling heavily before he scrambled to his feet and taking off after Zan, who collided with Lonnie as she ran out of the kitchen, sending her flying into a wall. Rath paused as he yanked her to her feet, and then ran down the hallway. They skidded to a stop behind Zan as he used his powers to unlock Ava’s door, another scream echoing as he finally shoved the door open.
He ran across her room, Rath turning the lights on with a flick of his wrist as Zan sat beside Ava, shaking her awake from the dream she was caught in. Her eyes flew open, her face deathly pale as she gasped for air, Rath kneeling beside her bed as Lonnie came to sit on the other side. Ava burst into tears, Zan drawing her into the comforting confines of his arms. Ava clung to him, her small frame wracked with sobs as she cried.
Zan could feel the residual effects of her powers die away as he rubbed her back, Rath grabbing the photo as it fluttered to the floor. Picking it up, he glanced at it, his eyebrows rising when he recognized who it was. He handed it to Lonnie silently, whose eyes widened in surprise. She glanced at Ava who was nearly hysterical and made a decision. Closing her eyes, she touched the photo, and was immediately drawn into the dream.
A girl was strapped to a table, and she was struggling as two figures examined a tray of sharp objects. The taller of the two picked up a gleaming scalpel, and slowly approached the girl. “I need your heart to prove my love,” he said. The figure waved his hand, the scrubs that she was wearing disappearing quickly. The figure pressed down on her smooth skin, a red line appearing as blood welled to the surface, and spilt, leaving a crimson trail behind.
The girl screamed, her face twisting in pain as she struggled to get away. The figure kept cutting her, the girl finally succumbing to the pain and ‘dying’. The scene changed, showing a grave sight, the head stone showing a name. Max and Tess stood over the grave, Tess heavily pregnant. Max turned to face Tess. “See, I told you that destiny was where my heart lay.” Tess smiled, holding up a beating heart. “Yeah, too bad Liz’s didn’t. Nice job on cutting her heart out by the way.” They kissed, the scene returning to the table.
Lonnie sat up gasping, the photo fluttering to the bed. She turned to face Ava, pulling her away from Zan and into her own arms. “It was only a dream Aves, that’s why ya could dream walk her. It ain’t real’ she whispered, Ava hick upping as she nodded. Lonnie cupped her face, tilting her head back slightly as she looked into her eyes. “It ain’t real’ she repeated, using her thumb to wipe the tears that spilt over as Ava tried to calm down.
Zan reached out and picked the photo up, feeling like he had been punched in the stomach when he caught sight of the image. A girl was lying on her back, her dark hair spread across the grass as she stared up at the camera. Her skin glowed as the sun warmed it, her doe like eyes full of hidden promises, her lips slightly parted as she looked up at him. Her hand was near her head, the other resting on her bare stomach. She was only wearing a small black bikini top and a short denim skirt, her smooth body tanned.
Zan licked his lips slightly, a sharp spear of desire traveling through his body as he stared at her face. She was beautiful, no doubt about it. He kept returning to her eyes, knowing that her eyes were the answer. Ava always said she felt like she was drowning when she stared into his eyes, and now he knew what she meant. The girls eyes were dark, and he instinctively knew that they would darken depending on her mood, and flash with fire if she was pissed.
Raising his eyes, he took a deep breath when he realized that everyone was watching him. “Who’s da girl?’ he asked casually. Ava sighed, reaching out to take the photo from him. “Liz” she said softly, rubbing her thumb over Liz’s face. “And?” Zan asked. Ava sighed, the final wall coming down as she sat up. Looking at Rath and Lonnie, she sighed softly. “I met her in Roswell.”
Ava sighed again. “She found me sleepin behind da dumpster at her parents café. She took me in, and gave me a place to stay. She sat with me when I had a nightmare ‘bout…you know…and she fed me ice cream. She hated my dupe with a passion, but she didn’t hold it against me coz I look like her. We talked all night, and when I left Roswell, I made da decision to check in on her, and if she was ever unhappy, I’d come back for her.”
Rath whistled softly. “She’s human Aves.” Ava snorted. “Actually Rath, she ain’t.” Zan’s eyebrows shot up, Ava smirking slightly. “Ya dupe healed her. She’s got power like no ones business. She just don’t know it yet.” Zan sighed again. “So why did he heal her?” he asked. Ava swallowed. “Liz was shot last year. She nearly died.” Zan’s eyebrows shot up in surprise. “And?” he asked again. Ava groaned softly. “Liz gave everything to him, and he shit in her face when my dupe showed up. It got so bad that Liz ran half way across da country last year. I met her when she had come back, and even then he was makin life difficult for her.”
Zan nodded thoughtfully as he stroked his goatee, his eyes open with curiosity. “Did ya see it in her?” he asked Rath quietly. Rath tugged on his lip ring as he thought about it, before answering slowly. “I thought she tasted different. But it was just that, a taste.” Zan tilted his head, Rath smirking. “What? So I macked on her. Big whoop.” Lonnie shook her head, Rath giving her an apologetic look. “Sorry babe, but we had a role to play. Ya know that.”
Lonnie bit her lip as she toyed with the hole in her jeans. “Yeah I know that Rath, but it don’t make it any easier” she said softly. Rath snorted. “Lon don’t pull this shit with me. Did ya think I liked da fact that ya were fuckin Niko? Coz I didn’t. But I knew it was da only way we was gonna survive this. We made a choice, and now we have to live with it.” Lonnie looked down again, nodding silently.
Rath sighed, reaching out to take her hand in his. “Lon, look at me.” Lonnie lifted her head, staring at him silently. “We’re together coz we choose to be, not coz some dead broad told us to be. I ain’t ever believed in destiny, and ya know this. Ya my lover, and I ain’t willin to give that up. These are da choices we make, and I’m glad we made ‘em.”
Zan sighed softly. “So what ya wanna do ‘bout cherry?” he asked Ava. She shrugged as she looked at him closely. “I dunno yet, but I’m gonna call her in da mornin, and if she ain’t aiight, I’m goin back for her.” Zan tilted his head slightly. “Ya tight with this chick ain’t ya?” he said. Ava shrugged again. “I dunno Zan, but there’s somethin there. She’s my girl, and I’ll do anythin for her. So yeah, I guess we tight.” Zan grinned suddenly. “Cool enough.”
Part 4.
A knock on the door the following morning had Liz yawning as she sat up. The door opened, Liz blushing when her father stared pointedly at Kyle who was snoring beside her. Jeff shook his head, grinning when he saw the extra duffel bags at the end of the bed. “I take it Kyle’s going with you then” he murmered. Liz nodded as she got out of bed, wincing slightly as her thighs brushed together.
Her father nodded, telling her that he would ring Sam to tell her to expect another body on the couch. Liz smiled at him as she went to have a shower. She came back out ten minutes later, bending down to shake Kyle. He snorted as he woke up, both of them blushing as they stared at each other, before Kyle slid from the bed and headed for the bathroom.
Liz sighed softly as she started to get dressed, pulling a pair of warn Levi’s on and doing the buttons up. Her thoughts drifted back to the previous night, a blush staining her cheeks as she remembered what had happened. Twice. Liz gave a soft snort, pulling a black camisole top on and sitting down to pull her socks and boots on.
She had been trapped in a reoccurring nightmare, where Max and Tess cut her heart out. She had woken up with a strangled sob, Kyle entering through her window as she did. He had gone home to pack, waking his father to tell him of his plans. Jim had understood, giving him some money, and a credit card to be used in emergencies, before telling him to take the jeep rather than fly. Kyle had agreed, telling his father that he would come back for it in the morning.
As Kyle had turned to leave his house, he had seen Tess standing in the shadows, tears swimming in her blue eyes. “I’m so sorry,” she’d whispered, Kyle ignoring her as he pushed past her, and out the door. Tess had run out after him, the soft swell of her belly visible in the pale moonlight. “I didn’t mean for this to happen,” she’d cried, Kyle turning on her in anger.
“What, ya tripped and fell on his dick?” he’d spat, Tess paling. Kyle had stared at her for a long time, before turning to leave again. Tess had spoken again, her pain and grief evident in her voice. “He’s my destiny Kyle. And no matter how I feel about you, I can’t change that. This was meant to happen.” Kyle had turned to face her, his voice quietly controlled. “If you believe that Tess, then your more deluded than I thought. You wanted him from day one, and you didn’t stop until you got him. Neither of you thought about how this would affect Liz or me.”
Tess had swallowed hard, Kyle stepping so close to her that his breath puffed across her cheek, her eyes closing as she breathed in his familiar scent. “I will never forgive you for this Tess. I loved you so much, and this is the thanks I get. Liz was right. Because you’re alien you have all the excuses in the world, but here’s the clincher for ya ‘lover.’ I can move on, and find some one else to love, but you? You are gonna end up lonely and unhappy, coz Max is never gonna love you like he claims to loves Liz. And he’s never gonna know her touch, coz she won’t take him back now. So in the end, ya both loose.”
Kyle had left her crying in the street, hurrying back to Liz’s place. He had entered her room via the window, pausing when he saw her twisting in a nightmare. He had held her close to comfort her, and things had rapidly spun out of control from there. A noise at her door had her looking up, and she started laughing when Kyle handed her a single daisy, knowing he had picked it from the potted plant in the kitchen.
“What’s this for?’ she asked, not hearing Max as he climbed up he ladder. Kyle shrugged as Max bent down to look in her window, freezing when he saw Kyle clad in only a pair of jeans. “When ya take ya best friends virginity, generally speaking ya get them a small something in return. I got you a flower.” Liz chuckled, feeling the tension leave the room. Standing up on tiptoe, she brushed her lips over his. “Thanks” she said, gently setting the flower down on top of her bag.
Kyle groaned as he pulled his tee shirt on, the soft material scratching the bite mark on his shoulder. “Damn Liz, just do me a favor” he said. Liz raised her eyebrows. “Don’t bite me next time,” Kyle pleaded. Liz started laughing. “Who said there was gonna be a next time” she teased, Kyle rolling his eyes at her small joke. “Did ya ever tell him about future Max?” he asked suddenly. Liz shook her head.
“No. He wouldn’t have believed me anyway. Max was so caught up in playing the roll of the victim that he never saw the truth. Alex told me that when he heard about it, if it had been him staring through my window, that he would have climbed in and demanded an explanation. But Max didn’t. He saw what I wanted him to see, and that was that.” Kyle shook his head as he started making her bed.
“If things had worked out between you, you would have had to tell him eventually. You know, he would have known you were still a virgin.” Liz shrugged. “Would he of?” she mused. Kyle nodded. “I knew the minute I took ya last night that you were a virgin.” Liz smiled. “I’m not anymore am I?” she quipped, Kyle groaning as he plumped her pillows up.
Kyle turned to face Liz, watching her silently. “What happens between us now though Liz?” he asked softly. Liz glanced at him silently, before she answered slowly. “I don’t know Kyle. We’ve had sex twice in the past six hours, yet I can’t look at you as a boyfriend, so this is what I figure. We’re going away for three months. If one of us has urges, then it’s all good. But at the same token, if one of us meets someone, we stop. I don’t want anyone else to go through what we have.”
Kyle nodded, sliding his arms around her waist as he tugged her towards him. “I have urges now” he mumbled as he lowered his head to kiss her. Liz sighed softly, before breaking the kiss and pushing him away with a giggle. “Kyle, my Dads home” she admonished. Kyle chuckled slightly. “Yeah, and ya point is?” he muttered. Liz grinned as she danced playfully out of reach.
“He might come in here,” she said with another giggle. Kyle groaned as he flopped down on her bed. “He might have come in here twice last night Liz, and shot me when he saw that I had ya legs around my waist but he didn’t.” Liz shrugged. “Beginners luck” she said, both startled when her door swung open, revealing Jeff. Kyle and Liz looked at each other, before cracking up with laughter. Kyle finally stopped laughing a minute later. “My dad said that if it was ok with you Mr. Parker, that he’d lend me the jeep, so we could drive. It’s cheaper, and we can take our time.”
Jeff nodded, agreeing with the logic. “You kids ready to go?’ he asked, leaving as they grabbed their bags. They left the room, shutting the door as they headed out for a summer of fun. Max waited until he saw them pull away, and crawled through Liz’s window. He searched methodically, finally uncovering Liz’s journal. Tucking it under his arm, he left as quietly as he had come, needing answers to the many questions that had his head spinning.

Part 5.
Max shut his door as he entered his room, turning the lamp beside his bed on. Making himself comfortable, he opened Liz’s journal, flicking through the pages until he came across the entries from when he was in her life. He smiled sadly when he saw his initials entwined with hers in the margin, knowing he’d never seen anything like it before. She had loved him even though they were different. Settling against his pillows, he began to read. He sat up straight an hour later, seeing what had caused the rift between them.
An older version of Max arrived on my balcony today, and he tore my life apart with in minutes. He told me that in fourteen years from today, his enemies invaded earth, killing everyone we know and love. He had just held Michael in his arms as he died, and that Isabel had died a few months earlier.
I asked him what had happened, and he told me everything. It was my fault. I gave in, taking him back when he came to my balcony singing to me like my Max did tonight. He told me as Max threw me the roses that he would change them mid air to white, and it happened. Apparently, Max and I ran away to Vegas and got married when we were nineteen.
Tess couldn’t handle seeing us together, and she left town. With out her, the four square was destroyed, and they were weaker as a group. Apparently, Max and I made love for the first time the night of the Gomez concert, and after that, we were always together. Future Max asked me to push Max towards Tess, that they needed to be together as a group, or every thing as we know it would end.
Max swallowed hard, turning the page as he continued to read, remembering how bad things had been back then, the horrible things he had said to her, and the way he had pursued her relentlessly. Turning the page, he kept reading.
I set it up for Max and Tess to meet today, but Max saw me. He kissed me in Whitakers office, and future Max told me that he had never seen anything like it. He said the pain and desperation on my face made him want to cry, that he was sorry he was making me do this. Max asked me to go to the Gomez concert with him on Friday, and I now know what I need to do to make him leave me alone.
Max closed his eyes, feeling the old familiar pain resurface as an image of Kyle and Liz flashed through his mind. He took a deep breath, and kept reading, tears silently sliding down his face.
Max hates me. I knew he would come to my balcony tonight thanks to Future Max. I went and saw Kyle and asked him to help me. He did with no question to why. I arranged for Max to catch us in bed together and he did. Nothing happened of course. Kyle had his boxer shorts on, and I had panties on, and Kyle was the perfect gentleman, closing his eyes as I got into bed.
I will never forget the look in his eyes. It will haunt me until the day I die, knowing that I put it there, all the while loving him like no one else. As I said to Future Max, he’s the love of my life. He told me that I will love again, and no doubt I will. But I won’t love that strongly again. Not when all I can think about is lying down and dying.
Max kept reading, needing to know more as he wiped his eyes dry. He hadn’t known the strength of Liz’s love for him, and it lit a tiny flame of hope in his heart. That flame was squashed out when he came to the last pages of her journal, knowing as he read the words he had lost her not only as a lover, but as a friend too.
Maria came to me today, telling me something that I never wanted to hear. Max got Tess pregnant. Didn’t he know that Kyle and Tess were together? Probably, but being the selfish arsehole that he is, he probably didn’t care either. I’m listening to Linkin Park right now, curtsey of Kyle, and one song keeps reminding me of Max. If I change the lyrics slightly it’s a no brainier. We’ve decided this song will be our mantra from now on. It’s ironic that it’s from the Hybrid Theory Cd, concidering that Max is a hybrid.
I’ve lied to you
The same way that I always do
This is the last smile
That I’ll fake for the sake of being with you
Everything falls apart
Even the people who never frown, eventually break down
The sacrifice of hiding in a lie
Everything has to end
You’ll soon find we’re out of time
Left to watch it all unwind
The sacrifice is never knowing
Why I never walked away
Why I play myself this way
Now I see your testing me pushes me away
Why I never walked away
Why I played myself this way
Now I see your testing me pushes me away
I’ve tried like you
To do everything you wanted too
This is the last time
I’ll take the blame for the sake of being with you
Everything falls apart
Even the people who never frown, eventually break down
The sacrifice of hiding in a lie
Everything has to end
You’ll soon find we’re out of time
Left to watch it all unwind
The sacrifice is never knowing
Why I never walked away
Why I play myself this way
Now I see your testing me pushes me away
Why I never walked away
Why I played myself this way
Now I see your testing me pushes me away
When I listen to this song, the lyrics change, and I find myself hearing it differently.
Why I never walked away
Why I blame myself this way
Now I see, that destiny pushes me away.
Max told me that he loved me, that I was his destiny. Now when I hear that word, I feel physically sick. Even now he doesn’t know me. He thinks he does, but he’s wrong. I remember when Michael came to see me to apologize about holding Max back that day at the cave. I told Michael then that if Max loved me as much as he said he did, he still would have chased me.
That gave him food for thought. I know in my heart that I’ll eventually get over Max Evans, but at this point, I hate him. I can’t blame Tess. She was up front about him being her destiny, but at the same point I can’t forgive her for cheating on Kyle with Max. I can’t forgive either of them, and if I’m honest with myself, I don’t want too.
I would have done anything for Max. I jumped off a bridge for him, lied to my family and friends, and when things got tough between us, he bailed. It shows that he’s weak. I’m better off with out him. I just hope that I can move past this betrayal, because at this point, I can’t breath. All I want to do is die.
Max shut the journal carefully, her words burnt on his brain. Everything that he thought was real was a lie. The window swinging open had him jumping, Michael’s eyes immediately drawn to the leather book he was holding in his hands. “You took her journal” he accused.
Max swallowed thickly. “She didn’t sleep with Kyle,” he said faintly. Michael snorted. “You just figured that out” he spat in anger. Max looked up at him in shock. “You knew?” he asked weakly. Michael shook his head. “I didn’t need too. I know Liz. She would never do that to you. But it shows just how little you thought of her to think she would.” With that he with drew his head and stomped away, leaving Max with his troubled thoughts.
Darkness came and he quietly climbed Liz’s ladder again, needing to return the journal. As he past her chair, he let his knuckles graze it, images flooding his mind that left him reeling.
Liz telling Kyle not to get her pregnant. Kyle whispering her name as he made love to her. Kyle yanking his shirt back on. “You were a virgin.” Liz nodding.
Max closed his eyes as pain swept through him. He knew that it had happened the night before, and as he sat down with a thud, he realized that he had lost her for good. Shame coursed through his veins as he remembered calling her a slut, and he shut his eyes and wept with the knowledge that Liz had run again because of him. Only this time, he knew she wasn’t coming back. His jaw tightened. He’d go to her instead. Standing up, he began to make plans as he climbed back down the ladder.
Part 6.
Four days later.
Kyle grinned as Liz grunted in the seat beside him. They had gotten an early start that morning, and Liz had fallen asleep in the passenger seat an hour later. Kyle smiled as he drove, his thought wandering to the past few days. Her father had driven them back to Kyle’s house to pick up the jeep, Kyle grinning as he ran his hand over the steering wheel. It was a ’97 jeep wrangler, the red paint job contrasting with the black leather interior nicely. He had the top down, and the wind was tossing Liz’s hair as she slept.
They had stayed in run down motels along the way, stopping in all the major cites to go sight seeing, just enjoying being in each other’s company. They had spoken properly about their situation, and had agreed to not sleep together again. It would mean getting tangled up in a relationship, which neither of them wanted. Kyle paused as he thought about that.
Kyle had told Liz about his confrontation with Tess, and how she had told him that although she had feelings for him, her destiny was with Max. Kyle bit his lip as he took an exit, remembering how Liz had been drawn to Max when they had found the orbs, unable to stop. Max had told Liz it was the same with Tess, and Kyle knew if Liz was really honest with herself, she knew that he was telling the truth. That made it all the harder to swallow though, knowing he hadn’t stopped with Tess, when he had with her. Glancing at Liz again, he was pleased to see her awake.
Kyle nodded his head, tilting his gaze up as the city skyline came into view. “Damnnn” he breathed, Liz nodding as he down shifted and swapped lanes. Reaching out she grabbed her sunglasses and slipped them on, the sun bouncing off the many skyscrapers. Kyle did the same, rummaging through the glove box for a CD. He grinned as he pulled Linkin Park out, grinning again when Liz gave him the thumbs up.
He nodded, the pounding beats thumping through the car with in seconds. He settled back in his seat, glancing at Liz out of the corner of his eye. She looked happier than she had in months, her skin glowing in the bright sunlight. He pulled up at some traffic lights, Liz reaching out to grab a hair tie from around the gear stick as he waited for the lights to change.
Pulling her hair into a messy ponytail on top of her head, she tossed it over her shoulder, Kyle watching her silently out the corner of his eye. She was wearing skimpy denim cut off’s, with a black bikini top, the scent of her coconut oil teasing Kyle’s nose. She had said she wanted to work on her tan, and judging by the deep golden glow her skin had, Kyle could tell it was working. She was wearing runners on her feet with no socks, the length of her smooth legs visible.
Kyle gritted his teeth. He knew that he and Liz had agreed to remain friends, but he was male. He could remember what it felt like to have those legs wrapped around him, and he envied the man who would enjoy her next. Kyle sighed softly as he mentally shrugged. Oh well. He’d just have to shag himself silly in the city.
Liz glanced at Kyle when he sighed, her mind flowing in the same direction. He was wearing his baggy jeans again, and he’d tossed his shirt in the back seat some time ago, the heat getting to him. His bare chest and stomach rippled with muscle as he shifted in his seat, his body sore from being still for so long. She’d known his touch twice now, and she knew the next girl to have him was a lucky girl indeed. Oh well. She’d have some fun while she was here.
Kyle stopped the jeep again at the next set of lights, Liz rubbing her lower back as it ached with a dull burning pain. Kyle glanced at her. “Tattoo still hurt?” he asked. Liz nodded, rubbing her tender skin gingerly. She and Kyle had gotten the idea to do something totally off the wall in Texas, deciding to get a tattoo each. Kyle had gotten a fat Buddha on his left shoulder blade, Liz laughing herself stupid when she’d seen it.
She’d gotten a tribal design on her lower back, the intricate swirls starting at the base of her spine and arching in a V shape towards each hip. The ink was a mix of fine black lines and heavier pale blue ones, overlapping and twisting to form the total design. It had hurt like all get out, a constant burning that Liz had welcomed. She smiled inwardly. God what had happened to make her so damn twisted?
‘From the inside’ started to play, Kyle lifting his voice with Liz’s as they began to sing together. Liz grinned at Kyle as he stopped at the next set of lights, glad that he was with her. They had been bound in the lie that was Future Max, the knowledge strengthening an unbreakable bond. When the truth about Tess and Max had come out, they had withdrawn into a world that was their own, ignoring everyone on the outside. This had hurt Maria, but she understood, as did Alex that they didn’t know what Liz and Kyle were going through.
Privately, Maria and Alex had been startled by the changes destiny had bought forth in Liz, and as the months past, they watched as she became a virtual stranger to them, turning to Kyle more and more. When Maria and Alex had found out that Liz was going to the city with Kyle for the summer, they had been hurt again, but they knew it was the only way for them to heal. It would take time, but heal they would. It was a certainty.
The song changed, ‘Faint’ pumping loudly through the speakers as Kyle tossed his head back and howled, Liz starting to laugh as he started singing loudly. She reached out, turning the music up as he swapped lanes, taking the road that would lead them straight to her cousin’s place. Kyle snorted as he pulled up at another set of lights, reaching out to press repeat, loving this song more than any other. Liz groaned, watching as a mini van full of nuns pulled in beside them. The nuns shook their heads in disapproval, Kyle grinning wickedly as he reached out and ran his hand down Liz’s bare thigh. The song picked up in tempo, Kyle singing loudly as Liz’s cheeks turned a dull pink.
“Now, hear me out now,
Your gonna listen to me like it or not,
Right now, hear me out now,
Your gonna listen to me like it or not
Right now, I can’t feel the way I did before,
Don’t turn your back on me, I won’t be ignored.”
As he yelled the last line out, the nuns made the sign of the cross, Kyle laughing as he gunned the engine and took off, the lights green. Liz shook her head. Kyle was in a playful mood; one that she knew could prove dangerous. Reaching out, Liz changed the song, Kyle pouting as he stopped at the next set of lights. Liz lifted her hands up near her head, twisting slightly in her seat.
Kyle grinned, reaching into the back of the jeep for his cowboy hat. Liz grinned when he plunked it down on her head, shading her face as she watched the people walk across the road in front of them. “Too many sets of traffic lights” Kyle mumbled his fingers tapping out a drum rhythm on the steering wheel as they waited. “One more set” Liz promised, ‘With you’ starting as the lights changed for the flowing traffic.
Liz felt a tingle start in her stomach as Kyle started singing, lifting her head and scanning her surroundings in confusion as the tingle ran rampage through her body. Her breathing became shallow, her skin too warm, and Liz closed her eyes with a soft moan. The lights changed, Kyle pulling away quickly. Liz let out the breath she was holding, the tingle fading, as they pulled further away. Liz sighed. She’d felt eyes watching her, and it made her uneasy. She shrugged. It was a big city. She wouldn’t feel it again.
Part 7.
Rath watched Zan silently. Zan was staring out the window, his hands above his head as he stared down at the street. The muscles in his shoulders and back shifted as he sighed, Rath standing up and joining him silently. “What’s eatin ya duke?” he asked softly. Zan looked at him and shrugged. Rath rolled his eyes. “Don’t shit me man, ya been antsy since Ava told us ‘bout cherry in Roz-hell. Talk to me.”
Zan blew his breath out in frustration. Walking to the couch, he grabbed a tee shirt and tugging it on, gestured towards the front door silently. Rath nodded, following Zan down the hallway and out into the bright sunshine. Zan walked towards the clubbing district, ignoring the glances he was getting, Rath silent as he walked beside Zan.
“I’ve been havin dreams,” Zan muttered suddenly, raking his hand through his hair. Rath glanced at him silently, waiting for him to continue. Rath sighed. “Tell me ‘bout da dreams” he said. Zan sighed in frustration. “It’s a girl. I can’t see her face, but she’s watchin me. I know her scent, I know her taste, but I still can’t see her face. She’s small, yet she fits me.”
Rath paused. “Hang on duke, dreams as in ‘dreams’ to awaken us dreams” he said. Zan nodded. “Yeah, those dreams. It’s buggin da shit outta me. I ain’t ever believed in destiny Rath. Yeah I’ve done Aves, several times, several ways. But that was convenience.” Rath sighed softly. “Do ya think Aves is dream walkin ya, or plantin da dreams?” he asked softly.
Zan shook his head. “Nah man, I know her too well for that. This is different. I’ve spent da last four nights dreamin ‘bout her. She doesn’t know me, and she doesn’t know I’m there. She’s so damn innocent Rath. I’m used to chicks that are more…I dunno. All I know is that when I wake up, I can smell her scent lingerin in da air.”
Rath paused, pulling Zan to a stop. “What do ya mean she’s innocent?” he asked in surprise. Zan sighed. “Just that bro.” Rath glanced over his shoulder, before speaking quietly. “Ya don’t do innocent Zan. Ya never have. All da chicks ya bounce on are gutter whores, girls that are used to ya fuckin and runnin.” Zan held his hands out. “That’s my whole fuckin point Rath. She’s different.”
They crossed the street, Zan stopping to buy an orange from a street vendor. He gestured to Rath, who shook his head at the offer. Zan shrugged, and they kept walking, Zan tossing the peel from the fruit into a bin as they passed it. He took a bite of the juicy fruit, Rath laughing as Zan muttered, the sweet juice running down his wrist. He shook his head, finishing his orange as he stood there.
They continued walking a few minutes later, Zan scowling as another tingle ran down his spine. “Damn it” he spat, rubbing his eyes in frustration. Rath looked at him in concern. “Duke?” he asked. Zan shrugged again. Zan heard Linkin Park pounding out of an open-air jeep, his eyes drawn to the car. ‘With you’ started playing, Rath nodding his head in time to the beat. The lights changed, allowing the pedestrians to cross the road, Rath pausing when Zan grabbed his wrist. Glancing at Zan, his eyes widened. Zan was pale, his skin flushed as he stared at the jeep.
Rath glanced at it, his eyes widening. A girl sat in the front seat, and he and Zan watched her, she suddenly lifted her head, scanning the crowded footpath. Rath saw long slender legs and a body he’d defiantly enjoy bouncin on. A hat shielded her face, and Rath turned back to Zan in confusion. His eyes were trained on the girl, and as the lights changed the jeep pulled away. Rath steadied Zan who was staring after the jeep in confusion.
“Duke?’ Rath asked. Zan shook his head slightly, his whole body tense as he watched the jeep disappear from sight. “Zan, what is it man?” Rath asked again. Zan stroked his goatee thoughtfully. “Didn’t ya feel it?” he asked. Rath’s eyes narrowed. “I ain’t da hound you are Zan.” Zan smirked slightly, his eyes darkening with anticipation. “We got some visitors in da city” he murmered.
Rath glanced the way the jeep had gone. “Visitors?’ he asked quietly, jerking his head upwards. Zan smirked. “Yeah. New players. Two of them. We gonna have to be on guard Rath. Don’t let da girl’s outta ya sight alone. This could be trouble.” Rath nodded, following Zan as he abruptly turned around, and headed back towards home.
Zan ran up the front steps quickly, calling for Lonnie as he entered the apartment. She stuck her head out of her room, her eyebrows raised when Zan beckoned to her. Ava wandered out of the kitchen, an apple clenched in her hand as she sunk her teeth into the firm flesh. “What’s up?’ Lonnie asked as Rath pulled her down into his lap.
Zan sighed, spreading his legs as Ava sunk to the floor between his feet, Zan automatically reaching out and tugging on her hair. “We was cruising up da street, and I felt somethin. We got two new players in da city. I ain’t sure what they were, but between ‘em, they got power like all get out.” Lonnie nodded, Ava resting her head against Zan’s knee.
She tilted her head back when he tugged on her hair again, Zan smiling at her softly. “Did ya get a hold of cherry?” he asked. Ava shook her head. “Nah, I spoke to her pops though. He said she’s gone away for da summer with a friend. She’s stayin with her cousin, and Mr. P was worried coz she’s gonna be workin at some club or other.” Zan nodded, and they relaxed, discussing strategy incase they were attacked. “Find ‘em, and we’ll follow em, see what da deal is” Rath said, Zan agreeing with his idea.
Lonnie tilted her head, Rath nibbling on her shoulder lightly. “And if ya’s find ‘em?’ she asked. Zan’s eyes took on a predatory gleam, one that Rath recognized well. Rath hooted. “Damn man, ya enjoy breakin ‘em don’t ya?” he laughed. Zan smirked. “You know it,” he purred. Rath glanced at Lonnie. “Ya remember what he did to da skank we found skulkin round da place just before we went to Roz-hell don’t ya?”
Lonnie’s eyes widened. “Damn Zan, she was beggin ya to kill her in da end” she murmered. Zan smirked again. “Ain’t my fault she had no stamina” he said with a cocky grin. Lonnie shook her head slightly. “Between you and da freak here, I ain’t surprised she was beggin.” Rath smirked. “Phtt, that’s it babe.” Ava tilted her head back slightly, her eyes seeking Zan’s. He felt her gaze, and looked down.
“What did ya do to her?” she asked softly. Zan smirked slightly. “Don’t worry ya pretty head ‘bout it. We took care of da situation, that’s all.” Ava rolled her eyes. “Lemme guess. Ya used ya powers on her, da freak over there bounced on her, and then ya’ll sent her back to Kivar in a jar.” Zan smirked. “Pretty much.” Ava shook her head slightly. “Ya got a mean streak a mile wide in ya Zan” she mumbled.
Zan frowned slightly, fisting his hand in her hair and tugging her head back sharply. “Don’t flex on me Aves. I do what I do to keep ya’ll safe. If I happen to cop a fuck outta it, I ain’t gonna argue. So don’t play da innocent little party in all this. If da shoe was on da other foot, and Niko had gotten a hold of ya, he would have done da same thing. I ain’t tied to no one Aves. We fuck occasionally, that’s it. I don’t have to answer to you.”
Ava tugged her head free of his hand, dropping her eyes to the floor. “I know that Zan. I know you ain’t ever gonna love me like I want ya too, but I can’t help it.” Zan snorted. “Look Aves. I do love ya. Back up there, yeah sure, ya were my queen and all that shit, but here, Aves, I can’t give ya what ya want. I don’t want to hurt ya Aves. But at da same token, I ain’t ever gonna change either.”
Ava nodded, standing up slowly. Looking at Zan, she spoke softly. “I know that Zan. And I’m startin to look elsewhere. I got ya back and all that, but I gave up on destiny da day ya died in da street. Just coz it isn’t real, doesn’t mean I can love ya back either. Not like I did. But I’m happy to stay ya lover, ya friend, what ever. But that’s it.” Zan stood up, towering over her slender frame.
“No worries Aves. But understand this. I’m da man. I make da choices, and I live with da consequences. That’s my job, my life, who I am. If I happen to kill a couple dozen skins along da way, then it’s all good. But I won’t have ya flexin on my authority Aves. Not when every thing I do, is to keep ya’ll safe.” Ava looked at him, and then sighed. “Ok Zan. Where do we start lookin?” Zan grinned. “They’re drivin a red jeep. That’s where we start.”
Part 8.
“Liz!!” a voice cried, Liz looking up from where she was leaning against the wall outside her cousin’s club. She smiled when she saw who had called out to her, a small “oomph” escaping her lips as her cousin pulled her into her arms for a tight cuddle. She pulled away a minute later, grinning at Sam who simply sighed, before pulling her close again for another cuddle.
“How are you baby doll?” Sam asked softly, tilting Liz’s face up in her hands, searching her eyes closely. Liz smiled again. “Better now I’m here” she answered softly. Sam grinned, both girls turning when Kyle coughed gently behind them. Liz grinned again. “Sam, this is Kyle. Kyle, my cousin Sam.” Kyle held his hand out, a smile crossing his face as he looked closely at Sam.
She was slightly taller than Liz, and only a few years older. She and Liz were almost identical in appearances, both graced with the same dark hair, high cheekbones, and doe eyes. Sam was all curves, her eyes slightly harder than Liz’s, due to having to grow up quickly. Sam shook Kyle’s hand, her face lighting up as she spoke with obvious pride. “Welcome to the city guys, and to my home away from home. This is Gilded Chains.”
Liz and Kyle both gasped when they walked inside, their eyes widening as they looked around. The club boasted three levels, Kyle and Liz nodding as Sam showed them around. The bottom level had a bar that ran around half of the room, before the room became all dance floor. In the middle of the dance floor was a stage, Sam explaining the stage was for bands and DJ’s. It was open planed, Liz able to see the roof from where she stood in the middle of the floor.
The walls behind the bar were all mirror, the bar and stools made of solid wood. Near the entrance to the club was a massive staircase leading up to the second and third levels. Sam led them up stairs, Liz nodding as she looked around. Booths and couches lined the walls, dark and inviting. Candles were dotted on each table, Sam explaining that she liked the way they gave a sense of privacy to the booths.
Leading them up to the final level, Sam explained this was the VIP lounge. More booths and couched lined the walls, Liz running her hand over one of the tables. The tables were made of solid wood also, the booths and couches made of black leather. Chains hung from the roof, and were coiled into patterns along the walls. Sam led them to her office, showing them how to open the door with the keypad.
The door swung open, Sam crossing the room quietly as Liz and Kyle entered the room. A large oak desk sat near the far wall, the walls lined with framed photos of Sam with different celebrities, as well as framed photos of family and friends. Sam sat down behind her desk, a smile crossing her face when a man entered the room.
“Jy” she said happily, tilting her head back to give him a welcoming kiss. Liz watched them, a smile playing at the corners of her lips. Jy was tall and muscular, his skin glowing the color of dark honey. He had black hair, which was heavily tipped pale blue, his eyes a startling green. His lips were full, the lines of his jaw sharp. He felt her gaze and turned, his white teeth flashing when he saw her.
“Lizzie bear!” he cried, crossing the room and sweeping her into his arms. Liz smiled as he held her close, breathing in the familiar scent of his skin. Jy set her back on her feet, regarding Kyle silently. “Jy, this is Kyle. Kyle, this is Jy. He’s Sam’s fiancé and also her business partner. They own and run this place together.” Jy grinned, holding his hand out. He was pleased when Kyle shook it firmly.
They settled down in the chairs as Sam sorted through some paper work, before she finally threw her pen down, and turned her gaze towards them. “Ok, this is the deal. You are both underage for drinking and serving drinks, but Jy and I discussed it, and we want to hire you both as promoters for the summer. It means working from start to finish, say three or four days per week.”
Liz nodded, Kyle raising his hand. “What’s a promoter?” he asked. Sam smiled. “You’ll be paid to dance on the floor all night, as well as handing out drink cards and entry passes during the day. We supply the clothing, and we’ll also pay to have you cleaned up to my standards for the club. I’ll pay you say a couple of hundred dollars per week, and believe me, you’ll work ya arses off for it.”
Kyle nodded thoughtfully. “What type of dancing?” he asked. Sam grinned. “Club style Kyle. Hard, fast and full of heat. The guys we hirer for promoting, are flashed up on the screen inside the club, as well as out side. Here, let me show you.” Sam leant forward, pressing play. The scenes that filled the flat screen on the wall where from the night before, Kyle and Liz watching as the images flickered quickly, showing various couples dancing together.
Kyle nodded, knowing he and Liz had danced like that several times together in the past. Liz spoke up. “Do we dance together all the time, or with other people?” Sam grinned. “You’re paid to just dance and have fun. Who with is up to you. As I said though, you’re gonna have to clean up some. You’re both too tame for this place. Come on, let’s go now. You start tomorrow night.”
Three hours later, Liz and Kyle walked out of a salon, both of them shell shocked at what they had just gone through. They stared at each other, before bursting out laughing. Liz’s dark hair was still straight, but the front had been heavily layered, the layers framing her face and showing off her eyes. The top half of her head had been colored, the dark brown strands now heavily streaked with blonde. She’d had three more holes pierced in her left ear, two in the other.
Liz smiled as she looked at Kyle. His hair was straight, the slight wave relaxed. His hair had been streaked a pale blonde, showing off his bright blue eyes, and the tan that graced his chiseled face. “Damn you look hot Liz” Kyle said finally, plunking his hat down on his head. Liz grinned. “You too Kyle. You look like a cowboy from Montana” she said, Kyle pleased with the compliment. He fingered the barbell that adorned his left eyebrow, grinning when he felt the multicolored spike that sat at the top. The bottom ball was a blue, Sam explaining that it would glow in the club.
They sat down on a bench together to wait for Sam, Kyle running his finger tips over Liz’s bare skin slowly. “Tell me about Sam” he said, Liz nodding as she slid her sunglasses into place. “Sam’s only twenty two. Her parents were killed in an accident three years ago, and they left all they had to Sam. She and Jy have been together since she was sixteen and he was nineteen.”
Liz sighed softly. “Sam sold everything, and pooled her money with Jy whose parents are millionaires. They bought the club as a run down dump, and his parents leant them the money to turn it into what it is today. Thy opened up six months after buying the club, and it’s now the hottest club in the city.” Kyle whistled softly, Liz smiling as she looked at him.
“She wasn’t jokin when she said we were gonna work for our money Kyle. Sam’s a ball breaker, and she expects 100% from those who work for her. She’s worked bloody hard to get to where she is, and to own what she does, and she expects nothing less from everyone else. There won’t be any slaking off on the nights we work.”
Kyle grinned as he stretched, dropping his arm around her in companionable silence. Liz turned to face him, pushing her glasses down the bridge of her nose so she could see him clearly. “I’m serious Kyle. It was a big deal for Sam, when Dad rang her to ask if I could come up here for the summer. She only has my Dad as family now, so it means a lot, knowing that he trusts her enough to take care of me.” Kyle grinned again.
“Take it easy Parker. I’m gonna behave. I promise to work my sweet little arse off for her, but on our days off, I’m gonna cut loose and have some fun. God knows we deserve it. I know that if I was still in Roswell, that I’d be getting maybe a hundred bucks a week by pumping gas or some shit like that, and when Sam said she’d pay us a couple of hundred for havin fun….damn!” Liz relaxed, nodding as Kyle gave her a gentle squeeze.
Sliding her glasses back up her nose, she smiled at him, speaking softly. “I’m so glad you came with me Kyle. I don’t know what I’d do if you hadn’t.” Kyle gave her a funny look. “What do mean?” he asked. Liz grinned at him. “I knew if I asked you to come, that you would. And I’m glad you did.” Kyle grinned again. “Minx” he muttered, Liz giving him a playful kiss on the lips. “You’re the best Kyle,” she said.
He grinned again, taking her hand in his and leading her towards the curb where Sam had parked. Holding the door open, he turned back to Liz as she started to slide into the car. “You’re gonna have fun Liz. Believe me.” Liz smirked. “I’m counting on it Kyle.” He hooted with laughter, and slammed the door, excited about a new start.

Part 9.
“Liz, come on girl, move that sweet arse of yours. We’re gonna be late” Sam called. Footsteps sounded down the hall, Jy whistling when Liz walked into the room. Her long hair was brushed down straight, the layers framing her face. The blonde streaks made her doe eyes stand out, the dark eye make up lending her an edge.
She was wearing army green cargo pants, the pants sitting low on her slender hips. Sam had talked her into wearing her black bikini top, the straps tied tightly around her neck and back. Sam had spent the afternoon applying small silver details to the bikini top, Liz still slightly self-conscious about showing so much skin in a nightclub. Chunky black boots completed her look, the old Liz parker a far cry from the girl standing in front of them now.
Kyle wandered out of the kitchen, his mouth dropping open. “Damnnn Liz, ya gonna start a riot” he exclaimed, Liz snorting with laughter. “Like your not” she retorted, Kyle giving a small twirl for her. He was wearing faded Levi’s, with a tight white tee shirt, his ever present cowboy hat firmly jammed on his head. Black boots encased his feet, a day’s worth of stubble making him damn sexy.
Sam beckoned to Liz, who walked over to stand in front of her. Sam turned Liz side on, hooking two slender silver chains across her hip, clipping them to the belt loops of her pants. They glinted against her thigh, showing off the black studded belt that circled her hips. Her tattoo was visible above the waistline of her pants, Sam shaking her head. Her uncle was going to freak.
Standing up, Sam grabbed her bag. “Kyle, you might wanna take your car. I don’t expect you guys to stick around for clean up, and Jy and I don’t get out of there until ten most mornings.” Kyle nodded; pocketing the keys that Jy tossed him. Grabbing his leather jacket, he shrugged into it. Liz was dong the same thing, Jy smirking to himself. Sam had been right. These two were hot, and they’d draw attention to the club.
Walking down to the car park, Kyle slid into the jeep, tossing the keys to Liz with a flick of his wrist. “You can drive,” he said cheerfully. Liz slid in beside him, her eyes starting to dance. “Linkin Park?” Kyle asked, Liz nodding in response. He turned the stereo on, the thumping beats filling the night air as Sam and Jy drove past in Jy’s Subaru WRX. His car was black with silver flames painted across the bonnet.
“One day I’m going to own a car like that” Kyle muttered, Liz grinning as she reached over, swiping her fingers across his lips. “You’re drooling,” she explained. Kyle wiped his mouth without thinking, snorting when Liz let out a peel of laughter. “You’ll keep Parker,” he muttered. She started laughing again, her hand gripping the steering wheel as she took off.
They got caught at a set of traffic light just before the club, giving them a chance to look at the line of people who were waiting to get in. It stretched from the entrance, and half way down the block. ‘Pushing me away’ pumped through the speakers, Kyle grinning. “Our song baby doll” he called, Liz grinning as he leant forward, turning the music up louder. They lifted their voices together, singing their version.
They spotted Jy and Sam waiting for them, Kyle gripping the edge of the windshield and standing part way up. “Hey Sam” he called, sweeping his hat off in a greeting gesture, causing Jy to break out laughing. Liz stared laughing, changing gears as she drove forward, pulling into the cage where employee’s cars were kept. Turning the car off, she tossed the keys to Kyle, before undoing her leather jacket. Kyle slid his arm around her shoulders, and together they walked towards the front of the club, unaware that they had been spotted.
Zan lifted his head when he heard Linkin Park start playing. He spotted the jeep immediately, nudging Rath who had his arms wrapped around Lonnie. He looked towards the road, nodding when he saw what Zan was staring at. Ava craned her head, but was too short to see what they were all looking at. Zan smirked slowly. A tingle at the base of his spine had him cursing suddenly. “That’s them Rath,” he warned softly.
Liz grinned as she danced with Kyle. She couldn’t ever remember feeling this free. The club was heavily crowded, Liz not feeling so bad when she saw the way the other girls were dressed. The music wrapped around her like an embrace, loosening the pain that had clouded her mind for the past few weeks. Kyle grinned at her, reaching out to splay his hands over her hips, pulling her towards him.
Liz moved her hips side to side, raising her arms slowly in the air. Kyle grinned, tilting his hat up slightly, the bar in his eyebrow glowing in the flashing lights, making his eyes appear unearthly. The music slowly faded, Sam clearing her throat in the microphone to get everyone’s attention. Liz turned to face her, Kyle wrapping his arms around her from behind.
“Hey guys, how ya’ll doin?” she purred. The crowd cheered, Sam grinning as she signaled the DJ. “Ok, this one goes out to my cuz and her boy. Welcome to New York guys. I know ya’ll love Linkin Park, what with ya blearing it at eight o’clock this morning and all Kyle, so this ones for you honey.” Kyle started to laugh, blowing her a kiss as she winked at him. ‘With you’ blared out; Kyle grinning as he promptly dipped Liz backwards.
He drew her up slowly, Liz wrapping her right arm around his neck, her left hanging by her side as they danced. They both felt eyes watching them as the song slowly faded out, Liz raising wary eyes to Kyle’s. He glanced around, shrugging as they continued to dance. The club was packed with people, the flashing lights distorting their vision as they danced close together. The hours slid past slowly, and before they knew it, it was four o’clock in the morning.
The feeling of being watched kept coming and going, Liz beginning to freak out slightly. She stepped closer to Kyle, who looked down at her in concern again. He slid his arms around her waist, slowly tilting her backwards, before drawing her up again, their pelvises pressed tightly together. Liz ran her hands up his chest, rolling her hips as Kyle turned her in his arms.
Liz raised her eyes, sweeping them across the crowded floor. She saw something that had her heart skipping a beat, and she froze in Kyle’s arms. He felt her stiffen in his embrace, and he dropped his gaze to her face. She was pale, and staring at something across the room. Lifting his eyes, Kyle immediately saw what she was looking at. Rath was leaning against the stage not three feet in front of them, his gaze settled firmly on them. Rath smirked, tilting his head in mock greeting. Kyle grabbed Liz’s hand, and turning quickly, began dragging her through the crowd.
He knew who Rath and Lonnie were from Liz telling him about the other set, and what they had done to their leader. Rath grinned, signaling Zan who was directly in the path they were taking. Zan smirked, stepping slightly under the stair well. He waited patiently, snapping his hand out as the guy ran past. His hand closed around the girls arm, and he dragged her under the stair well with him, Lonnie immediately mind warping the guy into not seeing them.
Liz cried out when a hand grabbed her arm, Kyle loosing his grip on her hand. She was jerked under the stairs, and shoved against the wall. Hands slammed down either side of her head, dark eyes filling her vision. Sweet breath puffed across her face, the soft snarl echoing in her ears. “Who are ya, and what da fuck are ya doin in my city?” Liz lifted her eyes, drawn in by the depth in the eyes that were currently staring into hers. “You’re dead,” she whispered. Sensual lips lifted into a smirk. “No I ain’t, but you will be if ya don’t answer my question. Now who are ya?”
Part 10.
Liz swallowed hard, trying desperately to calm down enough to think rationally. Zan leant closer, his nose almost touching hers. “I asked ya a question,” he hissed, Liz feeling his power rolling off his skin in waves, ebbing slowly into her body. He stepped closer to her, sliding his hands down the wall. He could feel the warmth of her skin as he placed his hands just below her shoulders against the wall, keeping her from moving.
Liz dropped her eyes, immediately feeling better. His eyes were powerful, and she felt like she had been drowning in them. They were harder than Max’s, darker with hidden mysteries. She felt him move his hand from the wall only to grip her jaw, his thumb forcing her head back so he could see her eyes. Her head thudded against the wall, and Liz locked eyes with him.
Zan felt like he’d been kicked in the stomach. Her face was familiar, as was the pain and confusion in the doe like eyes staring up at him. Desire speared through his body, Zan feeling like someone had taken a match to his blood, setting him on fire. He narrowed his eyes slightly, sliding his hand around to the back of her head. Gripping her hair in his hand, he tugged her head back, a scowl twisting his face.
“What are ya?” he hissed, trying desperately to control the fire coursing through his veins. Her eyes clouded with confusion, Zan feeling a seed of doubt enter his mind. Liz licked her dry lips, Zan’s eyes following the movement. Desire had him almost shaking with need, need that he kept tightly in check. “What do you mean?’ Liz asked softly.
“What are ya? Ya ain’t a skin, and ya ain’t Antarien, so what are ya?” he hissed. “Are ya an empath? Is that why I feel like I’m burnin?” Liz shuddered, her breath leaving her body in a shaky gasp. “What are ya talking about? I’m human,” she said, crying out softly when Zan stepped even closer to her. He slid his knee between hers, forcing her legs apart. Liz watched in silence as he licked his bottom lip, catching sight of the silver bar pierced through the center of his tongue.
Zan bent his head, running the tip of his nose over her shoulder, breathing in the fiery scent of her skin. Lifting his head he smirked dangerously. “I can smell it in ya. It’s in da air I breathe, it’s in da blood in my veins.” Liz frowned, even as her head fell against the wall, his free hand grasping her hip. “What are ya talking about?” she cried out softly. Zan laughing softly. “Ya power angel. Ya damn near buzzin with it. It’s in ya blood, as it’s in mine. What are ya?”
Liz shuddered as he drew her closer to him; heat flooding her body and setting her alight with need. “Zan.” her voice broke off, Zan tugging her head back again. “How do you know who I am?’ he hissed. Liz shuddered again, licking her lips, Zan once more following the movement with his eyes. “I know Ava. I met her earlier this year. She thinks you’re dead.” Zan smirked. “Nah angel, she don’t. She knows I’m here.” Liz yanked her head away from his grasp, her eyes blazing with sudden anger.
“Stop touching me” she spat, Zan smirking as he pressed his hands against the wall again. “Why’s that angel?’ he purred, knowing fully well why. Damn alien powers came in handy. “I can’t think when you’re touching me,” she said, biting her bottom lip. Taking a deep breath, she looked up at him again. “Is Ava here?” she asked. Zan narrowed his eyes. “Ya ain’t answered my question yet. Who are ya?”
Liz looked up at him silently, her doe eyes filled with hidden need, pain and the slightest tinge of longing. “If you’re telling the truth, and Ava is here, then she knows who I am.” Zan chewed on his bottom lip, finally snorting. “Fuck it” he spat, his large hands coming up to grip the sides of her face. He tilted her face back, looking deep with in her eyes, searching, searching…. ahhh, there it is.
Liz felt the exact moment he entered her mind, her breathing slow and steady as he sifted through her thoughts and memmories. She knew she should be fighting him, that she should be frightened of him, but for some strange reason she wasn’t. She was fascinated with the way his hair stood up in spikes, the magenta tips contrasting with the richness of his dark hair. His eyes were slightly different to Max’s. More alien, with a hardness and knowledge of the world that Max’s soft eyes didn’t possess.
Zan watched her memories flow past him like a stream of water. It was like time had stood still in this moment, a moment for them to share. Zan saw through her eyes, a face swimming into view. His face. “Liz, you have to look at me” The feeling of a large warm hand pressed against her slick stomach. A stomach slick with blood. Warmth spreading through her limbs. Healing warmth. “You’re alright now.”
Zan came out of her mind enough to run his hand down over her ribs to her stomach, pressing his hand over a wound that no longer existed. For a second he felt the blood pumping against the palm of his hand, before he locked eyes with her again, and he was once more was pulled into her mind.
Heat. Desire. All chemical. The inability to stop. The embarrassment of being caught in such a passionate embrace at school. The heat escalating every time he touched her. Watching as she slowly removed his shirt, running shy hesitant fingertips over his bare chest. Lost in the moment of kissing him, and feeling him lay her down on a threadbare couch. Need and desire pumping through his blood. So close to taking her, only to be interrupted….
Zan lifted his head slowly, his eyes blazing with desire. “What are you doin to me?” he whispered again. Liz slowly lifted her head, her own eyes matching his. “You’re the one walking around in my head” she murmered weakly, her skin flushed and shining with a light sheen of sweat. Zan ran his hands down over her shoulders, down her arms to her hands, feeling the slick satin of her skin under his calloused fingers.
He felt her entwine her fingers through his, confusion making him suck a deep breath into lungs that were refusing to co-operate with him. Lifting her hands slowly, he pinned them to the wall above her head. He could feel the confusion coming off her in waves. He was used to fear, not confusion. She wasn’t afraid of him. She was confused, but not scared. She felt…familiar. Familiar in a way that threw him. He knew this girl, knew her in and out. Looking at her face, he closed his eyes.
Blonde melted in chocolate. Dark eye make up vanished, leaving innocent eyes. High cheekbones that leant her an exotic look. Spanish fire in her blood, coursing through his veins. Olive skin that he knew would flush pink in the throws of passion. He didn’t know how he knew this, but he did. Just as he knew her name. Knew who she was, and how she had come to such power. Power that would either grow in time, or fade away.
He opened his eyes, staring down at the girl who was hiding behind an image that wasn’t hers. “Liz” he murmered, feeling rather hearing her sharp intake of breath. He could hear the music thundering through the club, yet it sounded like it was coming to him down a long tunnel. ‘Haunted’ by Evanescence. The song fitted the situation, Zan fighting the confusion and need as it ran rampage through his body. Her hands were still trapped in his, pressed up against the wall, causing her body to strain up against his as he leant his weight against her.
Zan tilted his head, his body shuddering as he continued to fight, fight the need and desire filled cloud he was trapped in with her. He watched as the tip of her pink tongue slid out of her mouth to moisten her lips, and his body burst into flames all over again. She didn’t belong with him. Didn’t belong to him. She shook under the intensity of his gaze, causing her body to arch against him again. He fought…. and lost. With a soft curse, he lowered his head, only to be interrupted…
Part 11.
Kyle turned when he lost Liz’s hand, his gaze sweeping the club quickly. She’d vanished. Kyle felt panic settle in the pit of his stomach. He couldn’t see Rath either, and as he swept his eyes over the club again, he saw something that had his heart jumping quickly in his chest. His long strides had him reaching her side quickly, his iron grip causing a gasp to escape pink lips.
“Where is she Tess?” he spat. Tess looked up at him in surprise. “What are ya talkin ‘bout?” she cried. Kyle shook her viciously. “Where is she?” he shouted. Tess yanked her arm out of his bruising grip, her eyes filling with tears. “WHO?” she shouted back, Kyle pushing his distress aside. “Who do you think I’m talkin about…you aren’t Tess…Ava,” he said. The small punk scowled up at him, before nodding.
Ava stared up at the guy in front of her. His eyes were a piercing blue, Ava instinctively knowing they would show all his emotions. His face was drawn into a frown as he once more swept his gaze over the club, his whole body sending off waves of fear and distress. She was surprised that he had seen through her warp, spotting her when she has been hiding in plain sight. Her arm throbbed where he had grabbed her, but she knew he hadn’t meant to hurt her. Not really.
Kyle grabbed her arm again, this time his grip gently. Ava’s eyes widened in surprise. “Who are ya?” she asked. Kyle snorted. “Kyle. We just saw Rath. I’ve gotta find her.” Ava bit her lip, glancing around quickly. She could see through Lonnie’s warp, spotting Lonnie and Rath leaning against the wall by the stair well. She sighed softly. “I know Rath and Lonnie are here. I’m here with ‘em.”
Kyle reared back like she’d slapped him. “But they killed ya leader” he cried. Ava’s jaw dropped open. How did he know that? “Nah man, they didn’t. Zan’s still alive.” Kyle stared at her. “Where’s Liz?” he asked softly. Ava blanched white. “Oh shit.” Ava pulled away from him, hurrying over to where Lonnie was leaning against the all, Kyle hot on her heals. Rath stepped in his path, Kyle simply shoving him out of the way.
Ava grabbed Lonnie’s arm, breaking her concentration. The warp dropped, showing Liz leaning against the wall, Zan holding her hands above her head. Kyle lost it. Reaching under the stairs, he grabbed Liz by the arm, yanking her out of Zan’s embrace. Liz stumbled slightly, Kyle catching her and drawing her into his arms. Holding her tightly he glared at the four aliens in front of him. He broke his gaze when Liz groaned softly in his arms, and he cupped her face gently. Tilting her head back, he looked down into her eyes.
“Liz, you ok baby?” he whispered, the four aliens able to hear him even over the thundering music. Liz shuddered, her head falling onto his broad chest. Kyle slid his hand over the back of her neck under her hair, gently rubbing the tense muscles with his thumb. Looking up again, he pinned his gaze on Zan. “What’d you do to her?” he spat. Zan smirked slowly, even though he was still on fire.
“Nothin.” Kyle glared at him, Zan unable to resist adding to his comment. “Yet.” Kyle narrowed his eyes, pinning all four with eyes that turned icy cold. “Stay away from her. All of you.” Zan stepped over to them, his height allowing him to look down slightly on the angry guy in front of him. Kyle met his gaze, and angry blue eyes met brown, which were filled with desire and amusement.
“Who da fuck do ya think you are?” Zan snapped, Kyle drawing Liz tighter into the circle of his arms. Kyle met his gaze, his anger tightly in check. “I’m the one who picks up the pieces when ya double damn near destroys her. He’s hurt her enough. She doesn’t need you to fuck her life up even more. Now stay away from us.”
Kyle turned his back on them, leading Liz carefully towards the side doors. Opening them, he led her to the jeep. Liz stumbled again, Kyle sweeping her into his arms and placing her in the front seat of the jeep. Locking her seatbelt around her, he grabbed her leather jacket and tucked it around her body. Liz started shaking, her eyes clouding over with pain.
Kyle brushed his thumb under her eye, catching the tear that threatened to spill forth. “Don’t you dare Liz. He isn’t worth it. No matter what face he wears, he isn’t worth it. Not for you, not for the tears that spill when ever he’s around. Get angry Liz. It’ll keep you alive” he whispered desperately. She nodded, closing her eyes and leaning her head against the seat. Kyle leant forward, brushing a soft kiss across her lips, watching as she fell asleep almost immediately.
Turning around, he stopped short. Zan was leaning against the car beside his, a look of confusion on his face. Lonnie and Rath were entwined in each other’s arms beside him, Ava sitting on the bonnet. Zan and Kyle locked eyes, Kyle finally breaking the staring contest a minute later and sliding into the driver seat. He started the engine with a flick of his wrist, jumping slightly when a small hand closed over his.
Turning his head, he looked silently at Ava, before wrenching his hand away from her. “Don’t touch me. I know that’s how she warps people the best.” Ava paled, Kyle’s face closed off, his eyes brimming with sadness and pain. He dropped his eyes slightly, his soft sigh echoing around them. “I’m sorry all right? I don’t do this well. I have a main purpose in life right now, and that’s to keep her safe. Safe from a guy who wears his face.”
Kyle jerked his head in Zan’s direction. Ava gently touched his hand again. “We ain’t like them,” she whispered. Kyle snorted. “Do you believe in destiny?” he asked. Ava shook her head. Kyle snorted again. “Neither did Max.” Ava’s head snapped up, Liz’s dream returning full force. “What’d he do to her?’ she whispered. Kyle’s mouth tightened. “I dream walked her Kyle. I saw Tess pregnant, and Max cuttin her heart out. What’d he do?” Ava asked again.
Kyle gunned the engine, before turning to look at her again. “You’re the advanced species. Analyze the damn dream, but add me into the equation, and you’ll have ya answer.” Ava tightened her grip on his hand, Kyle sighing softly. Ava tilted her head slightly, her eyes widening suddenly. “You were with Tess,” she breathed, Kyle clapping his hands sarcastically. Ava looked between Kyle and Liz, the dream making sense.
“Max was working it out with Liz, while bangin my girlfriend. The only reason we found out was coz he got her pregnant. That answer ya damn questions?” Kyle spat, once more removing his hand from under Ava’s. Her eyes filled with sorrow, and she spoke softly. “Liz helped me Kyle. I wanna help her. She’s gonna need it.” Ava looked at him closely. “And so are you” she hissed suddenly. Kyle looked at her like she had sprouted horns.
“Why?” he asked. Ava smiled sadly. “He not only healed her, but you as well. Am I right?” she asked. Kyle nodded, Ava reaching out and turning his hand palm up. Placing her hand palm to palm with his, she locked her eyes with his, and then slowly drew her hand up. Green sparks flew between their palms, Kyle hitting the steering wheel with his other hand. “Arsehole” he cried, watching the sparks dance over their hands.
Ava slowly let his hand go, watching Kyle closely. “You love her?” she asked. Kyle knew what she was asking, and with a soft sigh, reached out. Grabbing the back of her neck, he drew her quickly towards him, Ava realizing his intent. His lips closed over hers, and he poured everything he’d ever felt for Tess into the kiss. He let her go a minute later, watching as she stumbled backwards, the intensity of his feelings coursing through her body.
“I loved her. Things change, but these are the choices we make. I chose not to love her anymore, and it’s the anger and hurt that keeps me putting one foot in front of the other. Nothing less.” Kyle gunned the engine again, before looking at Ava once more. “Please Ava. Stay the hell away from us.” Ava lifted her head slightly. “Ya gonna need us Kyle. When ya come to da time ya do, just use your mind. Call my name, and I’ll find ya.”
Kyle looked at Ava strangely, Ava smiling as she explained what she meant. “Liz and I are linked by an old pain. One that’s new links you and Liz. Da three of us are linked. If you need me, call my name.” He smiled sadly, and then nodded. Kyle glanced at Zan once more, the silent warning clear in his eyes, before taking off with a squeal of tires, leaving the four aliens to watch them disappear down the ramp, and out of sight.
Part 12.
Kyle tucked Liz into bed, brushing a strand of hair from her face as she slept. With a heavy sigh, he walked back to the lounge room, his thoughts on Ava and Tess. He shouldn’t have kissed her, but he hadn’t been able to help it. She was so much like Tess, yet so different at the same time. He’d been drawn to her in a way he hadn’t felt before, and it scared it to know he wanted her more than he’d ever wanted Tess. Walking to the scotch cabinet, he grabbed a bottle of JD, and settled onto the couch.
He took a swallow of the fiery scotch, the amber liquid burning a path straight to his stomach as it slid down his throat. He reacted to it quickly just as Max had all that time ago, his vision blurring as he looked across the room. The flashing of the answering machine caught his eye, and with unsteady legs, he stumbled over to it.
It took him a few goes to hit the right button, his fathers voice filling his ears. His voice was strained and filled with pain. “Kyle, it’s dad. You’ve gotta call home. It’s bad news son.” Kyle took another swallow of the scotch, wincing as he picked the cordless phone up. He dialed his dad’s number, Jim answering on the second ring.
“Dad, it’s me,” Kyle mumbled. Jim sighed. “Thank god Kyle. It’s Tess.” Kyle snorted. “What’d she do this time? Fuck Michael?” he mumbled. Jim sighed softly. “No Kyle, she loosing the baby.” Kyle slid down the wall into a heap, his mind clearing slowly. “Is she ok?” he asked carefully. Jim sighed softly. “No Kyle she isn’t. Not emotionally anyway.” Kyle swallowed again, his eyes filling with tears.
Jim sighed heavily, his voice unsteady. “Kyle, there’s some thing else though son.” Kyle closed his eyes, waiting silently. Jim heaved another sigh, knowing he was about to break his son. “Max connected with the baby to try and save it Kyle. He tried his best, but the baby wouldn’t let him form the connection.” Kyle found his voice. “Why not?’ he whispered. Jim took a deep breath. “Because the baby’s yours.”
The phone fell out of Kyle’s hand with a soft thud, a strangled sob escaping his lips. “Kyle are you there?” His father’s voice crossed the distance between them, Kyle fumbling for the phone. “Yeah?” he mumbled, tears coursing down his face. “An alien called Larek is arranging for Tess to be taken to his planet to be healed. It’s the only way. She’s leaving tonight. She wants to talk to you son.”
“Kyle?” The soft voice brought another sob from Kyle’s lips, Tess starting to cry on the other end of the phone. “I’m so sorry Kyle. I’m so sorry” she whispered, Kyle biting his lip so hard that it started to bleed. “Why Tess?” he whispered, her soft sobs breaking his heart all over again. “I didn’t know Kyle, I swear I didn’t. I’m trying so hard to save her Kyle.”
Kyle started crying again, clutching his heart as he felt pain like no other course through him. “God Tess. Why didn’t you tell me? Did you even know? Did you care?” he hissed, taking another swallow of the scotch, the familiar numbness spreading through his body. Tess started crying again. “I’m sorry Kyle. I’m so sorry” she wept. Kyle closed his eyes, Ava’s face filling his mind.
“Good bye Tess.” Kyle disconnected the phone gently, stumbling as he climbed to his feet. The need to feel safety with Ava had him climbing back to his feet. He tripped over as he walked towards the front door, eager to get away from the demons that chased him. The phone rang behind him as he shut the door, the answering machine picking up.
“Hi, you’ve called Sam, Jy and for this summer, Kyle and Liz. We’re to busy partying to answer the phone, so leave a message, and we might get back to ya.” BEEP. “Kyle, it’s dad. Pick up son…. Pick up the phone Kyle…. Damn. Kyle, be careful son. I’ll talk to you soon. Don’t blame Tess Kyle. She’s a victim too.”
Kyle stumbled along the streets, his bottle clenched in his hand. Stumbling into an alleyway, he shut his eyes, leaning against the wall. Tears ran down his face in rivers, Kyle ignoring them as he drank the final dregs of the scotch. He clutched his chest again, before he fell to his knees. He called out to the one person he knew could help him. “AVA” he screamed, his sobs echoing around him. Clutching his head, he screamed silently into the dawn air. “AVA!!”
Zan looked out the window down onto the busy street, his body in knots. He rolled his neck slowly, his body still simmering. Wiping his hand over his mouth, he hissed slightly, smelling her scent still lingering on his palm. Confusion clouded his mind again, and with a soft curse, he walked over to the couch, flopping down and staring up at the ceiling.
“Liz.” Her name rang in his ears, her doe like eyes all he saw when he closed his eyes. Dreams and reality blurred, and he now knew who he had been dreaming about for god knows how long now. The past week had shown him dreams of destiny, a destiny he chose to ignore. But now destiny had a face. A face that haunted him.
He thought back to the images he had stolen from her mind earlier on in the night, images of Liz with Max. His mouth tightened with jealousy, and he gave a soft snort at the new emotion he was feeling. Kyle’s words rang in his ears. “Stay away from her. He’s hurt her enough. Stay away from her. He’s hurt her enough.” Zan sighed softly. He’d wanted her. Wanted her like he’d never wanted anyone.
He remembered the look on her face as he’d lowered his head to kiss her. Fascination. Desire. Fear. Need. All of the above. What the hell was he doing? She was human. “No she isn’t” a soft voice whispered in his mind, Zan shutting his eyes tightly to block it out. Doe like eyes swam in his mind, and with another curse he re-opened his eyes. He didn’t need this. He didn’t want this. “Yes you do” the soft voice whispered.
“Zan.” He lifted his head slightly, meeting Lonnie’s warm eyes. “What Lon?” he asked warily. She walked around the edge of the couch, Zan lifting his legs up so she could sit down. She sat down, letting his drop his legs across her lap. “What’d she do to ya?” Lonnie asked softly. Zan opened his eyes slightly. “What ya talkin ‘bout?” he asked.
Before she could answer him, footsteps pounded down the hallway, Ava skidding around the corner. She paused long enough to grab her jacket, cursing a blue steak as she pulled it on. “Fuck it!” she cried in frustration, tearing the sleeve in her hast. Dropping the jacket, she bolted for the door, bouncing off Zan as he blocked her way.
“What’s da hurry Aves?” he asked. She looked up in surprise, seeing him for the first time. “Kyle, he just screamed my name. In my head. He’s hurtin Zan. I gotta go…. Lemme go damn it!” She shrugged out of his grasp, bolting down the hallway for the front door. Yanking it open, she disappeared down the corridor, the front door swinging in her wake.
More foot steps thundered down the corridor, Rath appearing, yanking his tee shirt on as he struggled to jam his feet into his boots. “Where’d she go?” he asked, finally sitting down to quickly yank his boots on. Zan grabbed a jacket, Lonnie standing up from where she had been putting her own shoes on. Zan closed his eyes, and then snapped them open. “Not far. Come on.”
They took after her, their long strides closing the ground between them. Zan spotted Ava in the distance, pointing her out to Rath and Lonnie as they ran after her. Ava was dodging people as she ran full tilt, disappearing around a corner. Zan put on an extra burst of speed, catching sight of her pink head as she disappeared into an alleyway.
They ran after her, skidding to a stop when they heard the shattering of glass. “Fuckin whore!” a guy screamed, Zan’s eyes widening. He stood there silently, watching as Kyle fell to his knees in front of Ava, his arms wrapped tightly around her waist, his face pressed to her stomach. His whole body shook with silent sobs, Ava wrapping her arms around his shoulders, running her hands through his hair as he cried in her arms.
Zan approached carefully, listening as Kyle rambled on drunkenly. “She wasn’t his, she’s mine, and she’s gonna die. He took her away from me, and now she’s leaving with her.” He tilted his tear stained face up to hers, his eyes rimmed red and swollen. “What did I do Ava? What’d I do that was so bad to deserve this? I’m not a bad guy, really I’m not.” Ava choked back a sob as she held him tightly. “It’s gonna be ok Kyle. It’s gonna be ok. Where’s Liz?”

Part 13.
Liz walked down the hallway silently. She tightened her robe around her slender shoulders; the red satin cool against her skin. “Kyle?” she called. No answer came to her, Liz shrugging as she turned the kettle on. She’d been unable to sleep, her body still filled with heat. Zan had filled her thoughts, causing her to curse softly. She’d gotten out of bed, taking a cool shower.
Her damp hair hung down her back, her body slowly cooling down. The whistle of the kettle broke her thoughts, Liz making a pot of strong black coffee. Pouring herself a cup, she wandered out onto the balcony, watching as the sun bounced off the windows as it rose. Her thoughts returned to Zan, Liz sighing softly. She had a vague recollection of seeing Ava, but her mind had simply shut down, allowing her some precious sleep.
Zan. He was a mystery Liz was scared of analyzing. He was darker than Max. He had an edge that Max didn’t, Liz instinctively knowing he took without asking. He had been about to kiss her, Liz wondering if his lips were as soft as they looked. The piercing in his tongue flashed before her eyes again, Liz slapping herself mentally when she found herself wondering how it would feel against her skin.
Standing up she returned to the lounge room, sitting down on the couch and tucking her bare legs up under her. Something thudded against the door, Liz turning her head towards the noise. A soft click announced the front door had been unlocked, Liz watching as it swung open. Her mouth dropped when she saw Zan standing in the doorway. He turned slightly, helping Kyle through the door, Rath supporting his other side.
“Kyle” she cried, standing up and moving towards him as he fell to his knees. Zan jerked him up again, helping him towards the couch as Ava and Lonnie slipped inside, shutting the door behind them. Liz ran towards them, slipping her arms around Kyle as he stumbled again, catching his weight as he fell once more to his knees, taking her down with him.
He raised his head, his eyes blood shot and rimmed red, his face stained with tears. Liz cupped his face gently; her eyes filled with worry as he slowly lowered his head to her shoulder, his arms sliding around her waist. His hand pulled slightly at her robe, the satin sliding off her right shoulder. She felt his tears soak her robe, and she closed her eyes, resting her head against his.
“She’s dying Liz,” he mumbled, Liz lifting her head when she heard his voice. “Who Kyle” she whispered. “My baby Liz. My baby girl. She’d dying. Max tried to save her, but she wouldn’t let him. She wanted her daddy, and he wasn’t there, so she’s going away. Tess tried to save her, but she couldn’t. Not here. Oh god Liz, I can’t breathe.”
Kyle slowly fell on his side, resting his head on her bare thigh where her robe had ridden up. Liz stroked her fingers through his hair, feeling the tremors that ran through his body as he started crying again. He looked up at her, reaching up to run a strand of her hair through his fingers. “Tess said she’d look like me Liz. Dark hair, blue eyes. What’d I do Liz? Why me?”
Liz lifted her gaze to the ceiling, her eyes filling with tears that spilt down her face when she looked back down at him. “You’re gonna be ok Kyle. I’m here ok? I’m right here.’ He nodded, mumbling softly as he slowly passed out. Liz bit her bottom lip as she bent over him, holding him tightly as he gave a shuddering sigh, signaling that he had fallen asleep.
She felt a calloused hand close over her bare shoulder, tilting her head up. She met Rath’s clear gaze, and he motioned to Kyle. “Where do ya want him?’ he asked softly. Liz wiped her eyes, before pointing down the hallway. “Second door on the right.” Rath nodded, Zan helping him yank Kyle to his feet. Between them, they half carried, half dragged him down to his room, where they dropped him on the bed.
Liz followed them down, Ava and Lonnie watching from the door way as she started removing his boots. They thudded on the floor as Liz dropped them, Zan helping her sit Kyle up so she could remove his tee shirt. Ava came to stand beside Liz, Kyle’s hand searching the bed. With out thinking, Ava reached down, touching his hand gently. He grabbed her hand tightly, tugging her down on the bed with him.
Ava blinked as he wrapped his arms around her waist tightly. “Don’t leave me too Ava. I don’t wanna be alone” he mumbled. Ava rolled over in his arms, holding him tightly as he moved closer to her. “Don’t worry Kyle. I ain’t goin no where” she whispered, his breathing slowly evening out again. Ava looked up at Liz quietly. “Ya ok with this?” she asked. Liz nodded. “Yeah. He needs you right now Ava. Stay with him.”
Ava nodded, then looked back at Liz. “It’s good to see ya again Liz, I just wish it was under different circumstances.” Liz gave her a sad smile. “Me too Ava. Me too.” Grabbing the throw blanket from the chair, she covered them up, Kyle starting to shake with cold. Ava held him tighter, his shaking slowly subsiding as Liz closed the door silently.
Returning to the lounge room, she regarded the others silently. “What happened?’ she asked. Zan looked at her. “He called out for Ava, and that’s how we found him.” Liz’s mouth tightened, and she walked over to where the phone was normally kept. The phone was missing, Liz noticing the flashing light on the answering machine. She pressed play, the mechanical voice announcing that there was two messages.
“Kyle its dad. You’ve gotta call home. It’s bad news son.” Liz swallowed, the second message staring a second later. “Kyle its dad. Pick up son…Pick up the phone Kyle…. Damn. Kyle, be careful son. I’ll talk to you soon. Don’t blame Tess Kyle. She’s a victim too.” Liz swallowed hard, deleting the messages quietly.
Looking up she saw Zan pick the phone up off the floor. He handed it to her silently, Liz dialing the familiar number quickly. It rang twice, then Jim’s sad voice filled her ears. “Hello?” Liz sighed. “Sheriff, it’s Liz.” Jim gave a soft sob. “Is Kyle ok Liz?” she sat down on the couch, dropping her head into her palm as her eyes slid shut. “No he isn’t sheriff. He’s gotten really drunk. What’s happened? He’s rambling on about a baby girl.”
Jim sighed. “Tess’s loosing the baby Liz. Max tried to connect with her, but the baby wouldn’t let him. Turned out to be Kyle’s kid she carrying, not Max’s.” Liz shot up off the couch like she’d been burnt, her anger crackling along her skin. “What?” she cried. Jim sighed. “Tess is leaving the planet tonight Liz. She’s going with Larek. He’s the only one who can save their child.” Liz snorted.
“So what, she gets to jet off into the sunset, and Kyle’s left to pick up the pieces again? No way Sheriff. Put her on the damn phone.” Tess’s soft voice echoed in her ears a few minutes later. “Hello?” Liz snarled in anger. “You fuckin whore” she spat, causing three sets of eyebrows to shoot up. “How could you Tess? How could you do this to him?”
Tess started crying again, Liz waving her hand in anger. “Don’t damn well cry to me Tess. How could you? Do you even care? Oh yeah, that’s right. ‘My protector raised me, so I have no feelings’” she mimicked in a high pitched voice, Rath covering his mouth so he didn’t laugh out loud. Zan smirked slightly, relaxing his face into a frown when Liz glared at him. Rath snorted softly behind his hand when Zan backed down, earning him the same glare that quickly shut him up.
“I love him Liz” Tess cried, Liz snorting again. “Oh frog shit Tess. You loved him that much that you were fuckin Max on the side. What, one guy not enough for you? Why don’t you just fuck the whole footy team while you’re at it?” Tess started crying again, Liz rolling her eyes. “I’m sorry Liz” Tess sobbed. Liz laughed dryly. “So am I Tess. Sorry I ever laid eyes on you in the first place.”
Rath started laughing. He couldn’t help himself, Liz shaking her head wryly. She turned her back on them, giving her attention back to Tess. “All I can say to you is this Tess. Don’t come back. If you do, I’m gonna bitch slap ya arse back off the planet. We clear?” With that she hung up, throwing the phone down on the couch in anger. Rath wiped his eyes, his body still shaking with laughter.
“Frog shit? Da whole footy team? Bitch slap ya arse back off da planet? Man, I never knew ya had it in ya” he said, laughter bubbling up once more when Liz glared at him again. He sat down with a soft thud, his whole body shaking as he howled with laughter. Liz couldn’t help but smile as he laughed, her whole face transforming. “What can I say? She pisses me off,” Liz said, causing Zan and Lonnie to start laughing as well. Liz snorted, before laughing herself.
Liz shook her head, sitting down, as she looked them over carefully. Rath still had a mow hawk, but it had been trimmed down sorter, and streaked blonde. His piercing were still there, his gruff attitude hiding a wicked sense of humor. Lonnie still looked the same, breath takingly beautiful. The only differences being that her eyes were softer, the hard edge gone. Liz swept her eyes over Zan, once more struck by the similarities and differences between him and Max. Ava had changed the most; reminding Liz of Tess with how her blonde hair now rested in loose curls on her shoulders, hot pink steaks defining curls.
Lonnie wiped her eyes, sitting up slowly. She looked at Liz, and held her hand out. Liz took her hand, smiling as they shook hands. “Lonnie. Nice to meet ya.” Liz started laughing “Liz, and it’s nice to meet the real you.” Lonnie started laughing again, glad that Liz had known why she had introduced herself. Lonnie pointed at Rath.
“Rath ya know. This is my bro Zan.” Liz grinned. “Nice to see you again when my eyes aren’t crossed” she said, Zan chuckling. “I don’t ask, I just assume ya da enemy,” he said. Liz snorted. “Yeah, I’m real dangerous.” Zan snorted, watching as Lonnie touched Liz gently on the back of the hand. “If it’s aiight with ya, I gonna dream walk Kyle, make sure he’s ok. While I’m in there, I’m gonna fix his pain.” Liz looked at her strangely.
“Fix it how?’ she asked. Lonnie smiled. “Nothin dangerous. He’ll remember everythin, it just won’t hurt as much.” Liz sighed, and then nodded. Picking up her bag, she removed her wallet. Opening it up, she took a photo of her and Kyle out, handing it to Lonnie silently. “The spare rooms next to Kyle’s. You can crash in there.” Lonnie grinned, taking Rath’s hand and leaving the room. Turning around, Liz came face to face with Zan. She swallowed hard. They were alone now.
Part 14.
Zan leant against the wall, his feet crossed over each other, his arms crossed over his chest. He smirked to himself as he watched Liz swallow. She looked like a deer caught in headlights. All eyes. Straightening up slowly, he crossed the room, plopping down on the couch, Zan patting the couch beside him. Liz swallowed again, causing a throaty chuckle to emerge from Zan’s mouth.
“Relax, I ain’t gonna bite,” he said, Liz blushing a soft pink. She sighed softly, crossing the room and sitting on the other end of the couch. Zan slumped down in the couch, his long legs open and sprawled. He rested his arm along the back of the couch, his eyes lazy as he looked at her. Liz bit her lip, tucking her legs up under her again, Zan noticing the length of her bare legs as she tugged her robe down.
She tucked a strand of hair behind her ear slowly, and then looked at him. “What did you mean when you asked what I was?” she asked quietly. Zan raised his eyebrows slightly. “Ya don’t know?” he asked. Liz shook her head, Zan chuckling softly. “Shit, ya really don’t have any idea do ya?’ he asked. Liz shook her head again, Zan reaching out and picking her hand up.
Liz froze at his touch, Zan simply smirking as she tried to hide her reaction. Turning to face her, he held her hand in his, turning them so they were palm up. Using his middle finger, he started at her wrist, and drew a soft line down the center of her palm, his finger lingering along the surface of her skin, his eyes locked with hers.
Liz’s eyes widened at the intimate caress, her lips parting when she felt the tingle on her palm. Zan dropped his gaze, Liz following the direction his eyes had gone. Green energy flowed over their hands like water, Liz’s breath quickening. Her eyes widened, a small crease appearing between her dark eyebrows as she made a small sound of distress.
“What’s happening to me?” she whispered, Zan releasing her hand slowly, the energy continued to dace over her hand, before slowly dissipating. She looked up at Zan, panic visible in her eyes. Zan picked her hand up again, gently squeezing her suddenly cold hand. “Ya have no idea why this happened do ya?” he asked. Liz shook her head, Zan pulling her to her feet. He drew her between his thighs slowly, her eyes widening in surprise.
His hands went to the ties of her robe, gently parting the satin material. She was wearing black panties and a matching camisole top, the strap falling from her shoulder slowly. His eyes flicked over her smooth skin, before he reached out and placed his hand over her old wound. Liz arched slightly under his touch, the memory surfacing, and she once more felt the bullet enter her stomach.
Zan slowly withdrew his hand, Liz starting to shake as she drew her parted robe around herself, suddenly cold all over. She swayed on her feet, Zan pulling her down beside him on the couch again. Liz swallowed hard, before speaking again. “Max healed me…that’s all right?” Zan shook his head, Liz closing her eyes slowly. Her chin dropped slightly, Zan tilting her face back up so he could see her eyes.
”He changed ya. Both of ya. I dunno if it’s permanent or not, but right now…ya both have power like ya wouldn’t believe. That’s what I meant. I felt ya’s da day ya entered da city, and not knowin what ya were, we came lookin for ya.” Liz swallowed slightly. “If Ava hadn’t known me? Or we’d been an enemy?” she whispered. Zan shrugged. “I woulda killed ya both.” Liz blanched white, Zan tilting her face up to meet his gaze again.
“I won’t take chances with my family Liz. I already died once to protect ‘em, I ain’t doin it again. It damn near tore us apart, and even now, I don’t think Aves trusts us fully.” Liz swallowed hard, Zan watching as she stood up. “Liz.” she looked down at him. “I ain’t Max. Don’t confuse da two of us. I’m not some pansy arse momma’s boy. I’m a man who grew up knowing what he was, and what had happened in da past.”
Liz nodded, walking slowly towards her bedroom. She paused before she left the lounge room, looking back at him. “Thank you for helping Kyle” she said softly. Zan grinned. “It’s aiight angel.” She looked at him once more. “Angel?” Zan nodded. “Ya ain’t some fragile bit of glass Liz. Ya took a tumble, a big one at that. So yeah, angel.” Liz smiled slightly, and disappeared into her room.
Zan drummed his fingers on his thigh, counting backwards from one hundred slowly. When he hit one, he stood up, walking quietly down the hallway. Opening the door to Kyle’s room, he checked in on Kyle and Ava, hiding his smirk as they snored softly in unison. Shutting the door behind him, he checked on Lonnie and Rath, biting his lower lip to stop himself laughing as Rath smothered Lonnie with his weight.
As always, Lonnie was asleep on her back, Rath asleep on his stomach, his weight half over her slender body, pressing her down into the soft bed. Rath snored into her shoulder, Lonnie’s hands tangled with his, her face turned towards his, their noses touching. Zan wandered into their room, pulling the tangled blankets up over them silently before leaving the room.
He paused outside Liz’s room before nudging the door. It swung open silently, Zan smirking when he realized Liz hadn’t shut it properly. Entering her room, he shut the door quietly, before crossing the darkened room. He could smell the lingering scent of candles, and with a small gesture, lit them. Only two flickered in the room, both on the bedside table. Zan stood at the end of the bed silently, watching Liz as she slept.
She was sprawled on her stomach, her hair spread across the pillows. Her right hand was fisted under her chin, her long legs silhouetted under the thin sheet covering her. Zan tilted his head as he watched her sleep, her face twisting into a frown, before relaxing again. Nudging his boots off, Zan kept his eyes firmly on the bed. He removed his tee shirt slowly, before tucking his socks into his boots.
Moving around to the other side of the bed, he slid beneath the sheet, lying on his side as he continued to watch her sleep. A thick strand of her hair had fallen across her eye, Zan reaching out to tuck it behind her ear. Liz murmered softly, rolling onto her side to face him. She sighed softly as she settled back down, Zan closing his own eyes.
Sam and Jy entered the apartment an hour later, laughing softly as they walked into the lounge room. Jy lifted his head suddenly, looking around. “There’s someone here” he murmered. Sam glanced at him quickly, following him as he moved down the hallway. He opened the door to Kyle’s room, his face relaxing. “Who’s that?” Sam whispered. Jy smiled. “That’s Ava. If I’m not wrong, Zan, Lonnie and Rath are here too.”
They opened the door to the spare room, Jy shaking his head when Rath lifted his head. “Hey Jy” he mumbled, Jy grinning when Rath started snoring a minute later. He shut the door, moving across the hall to open Liz’s door. He shut his eyes momentarily when he saw the bed, Sam smiling softly. The candles were still flickering, illuminating the bed clearly.
Zan was still lying on his side, Liz firmly locked in his arms. Her face was pressed against his chest, her hand curled over his heart. Their legs were tangled together, Zan’s arm supporting her head as they slept. His other arm was around her waist, his head tilted so his nose was resting in her hair. As they watched them sleep, Liz murmered softly, Zan reaching up and stroking her face gently with his thumb, settling her back down easily. When she’d settled, his arm slid back down around her waist.
Jy shut the door quietly, motioning towards their room. Sam followed him quietly, sitting down as she watched her lover get ready for bed. “Who are they?” she finally asked. Jy sighed softly, lifting his gaze to the ceiling. “Antarien royalty” he finally said. Sam looked at him in surprise. “The girl with Kyle is Ava. Lonnie and Rath were together.” Jy swallowed hard. “And Zan is the king of my neighboring planet.”
Sam narrowed her eyes. “Ok Jyrelik. Start talking. I know your brother is Larek. I know that you are a prince on another planet. How do you know who they are?” she hissed. Jy smiled. “They died nearly fifty five years ago, and were recreated and sent here. This is their second life. Don’t worry Sam. They won’t hurt Liz or Kyle.” She nodded, sliding into bed with him. “They’d better not, coz if they do…I’ll kill ‘em.” Jy chuckled as they settled down to sleep. “I’m sure you would” he murmered.
Zan woke slowly a few hours later. He yawned widely; unable to recall the last time he had slept so soundly. Reaching out he encountered the pillow, his eyes snapping open. He snorted softly when he realized he was alone. He blinked, unsure of what to do. This never happened. He was always the one to leave. “But you’ve never just slept in the same bed with a woman before” a voice whispered.
Zan sat up slowly, scratching his bare chest slowly. He glanced at Liz’s side of the bed again, smiling softly when he saw the sheet of paper folded in half on her pillow. He opened it up, scanning her words as a smirk appeared on his face.
Zan, I didn’t want to wake you. Thank you for helping Kyle before. I won’t forget what you did for him. Thank Lonnie, Rath and Ava for me when they wake up. See you around. Liz.
Zan grinned as he slid from her bed, tugging his tee shirt on slowly. “See me again ya will Liz” he whispered. “Ya can count on it.”
He raised his head, his eyes blood shot and rimmed red, his face stained with tears. Liz cupped his face gently; her eyes filled with worry as he slowly lowered his head to her shoulder, his arms sliding around her waist.

Part 15:
Thank you for the feed back guys, but just a small note. This is just a story, and my idea's on what "could" of happened. It's not the actual show itself, and i know all feed back is appreciated, but if you don't like the way i'm writting this story, or the way i'm interpriting the character....don't read it. Thanks.. Kerri.
Liz grunted as she lifted the case off beer out of the fridge. It was cold in the cooler room, Liz only wearing her skimpy denim shorts and a tight pink tank top. Her hair was in a messy bun at the back of her head, held in place with a pen. Shutting the door quickly, she walked carefully back up the stairs. Crossing the floor, she set the beer down on the bar, and started loading the fridges up.
It gave her time to think, her thought conflicting with each other as she stocked the final fridge. She had been startled to find Zan in her bed when she’d woken up earlier on in the day. Even more startled to find herself locked in his arms, his breath brushing across her shoulder as he slept. Even more startled to realize she hadn’t slept that well in nearly two months.
She had slid silently from the bed, her heart pounding as she watched him roll over onto his back, his muscular stomach and chest rippling as he moved. She had fled to the kitchen, Sam cheerfully greeting her and asking her to help with the set up for that night. Liz had agreed immediately, glad to have an excuse to be gone from Zan’s presence.
She wasn’t scared of him, but he did make her nervous. There was a sense of danger to him, a knowledge that he was more experienced in the way the world worked. An edge that made him a man, not a boy. Liz blew her breath out in frustration. Standing up, she crossed the room again, throwing the empty box down with the rest of the empty cartons.
Returning to the main floor, she picked up the box of candles, taking her time to replace the old ones on each table. Soft music drifted through out the empty club, Liz humming softly as she made her way back down stairs. It was humid in the club, Liz feeling a bead of sweat run down her spine. She was used to the dry heat of the desert, not the humidity that came with being so close to water.
It reminded her of the heat wave that had swept Roswell two summers ago, when her life had been spinning uncontrollably towards her destiny. A destiny that she would find meant walking alone. Crossing to the bar, she bent down to duck under the opening, grabbing a bottle of water from the fridge. Opening it, she took a deep swallow, the cool water easing her parched throat.
She closed her eyes slowly, sighing softly as she leant against the bar. Shaking her head slightly, she ducked back under the bar, and headed for the cooler room again, needing a reprieve from the relentless heat. She stood in the middle of the cold room, her head resting against the beam that stood behind her. She was lost in thought when the voice startled her out of her daydream.
“Whatcha doin?” Liz spun around, locking eyes with Zan. He was leaning against the door, a lazy smirk on his face. Liz swallowed, dropping her eyes to the floor. Safer that way. “How’d you get in?” she asked softly. Zan smirked again. “Alien powers…. come in handy some times.” Liz’s eyes flew to his face, the look on her face causing him to start laughing. “Relax Liz. Jy and I go way back. He’s up stairs.”
She blushed, causing him to start laughing again. He clomped down the stairs, his tread heavy as he leant against the door of the cooler. Liz flicked her gaze over him. He’d obviously been home to change, his clothes different from the night before. Instead of the baggy jeans he’d been wearing, he was now clad in black cargo pants, a hole in one knee. A black tee shirt had been replaced with a gray one, both tight enough to show his body off.
He regarded her silently, Liz once more dropping her eyes to the floor. Zan smirked slowly. He could feel her confusion, tinged with fear and…. something else. “So, whatcha doin?’ he asked again. Liz looked up at him. “Setting up for tonight,” she said softly. He nodded, sliding down the fridge door and leaning against the cold surface. “Damn it’s hot today,” he muttered, Liz smiling slightly.
“You wouldn’t last in Roswell then” she said, Zan grinning at her. “Why?” he asked. Liz slid down the beam, resting her head on the solid wood. “Out there, it’s dry heat. It gets hot early, and stays hot until really late at night. The breeze tears at your skin, reminding you that you’re surrounded by sand and rock, nothing else.” Zan winced. “Ouch” he muttered, Liz laughing softly. “Yeah.”
He stood up slowly, his movements feline as he crossed back to the stairs. Glancing at Liz he gave a slow smile. “Dry heat hey?” Liz looked up at him, a questioning look on her face. A smirk crossed his face. “I prefer wet heat.” Liz blushed again, Zan chuckling softly as he climbed the stairs. Liz fanned her face, instinctively knowing what wet heat he had meant, and it wasn’t the weather.
She blew her breath out, climbing the stairs slowly. Jy was at the DJ booth, fiddling around with the CD’s. Liz walked over to him, hoisting herself up onto the stage. Jy grinned at her, sliding a new CD onto the turntable. He hopped down, holding his hand out to Liz, who started laughing as he helped her down. Guns N Roses started playing, ‘don’t cry’ filling the empty club loudly.
Jy held her in his arms gently, Liz smiling up at him as they danced. Jy smiled at her gently. “I know Liz. I know who you are. I know who Max is.” Liz froze, Jy simply standing still with her in his arms. “I know who Zan is. I always have.” Liz licked her lips slowly. “Know what Jy?” she asked softly. He grinned at her. “My brother’s name’s Larek. Tess is going to our home tonight. I know.”
Liz sagged slightly, Jy tilting her face up gently. “It’s ok Liz. Sam knows who I am. She doesn’t know about you and Kyle, but she knows about the whole other world deal. The reason I’m telling you this is because you deserve to know the truth. Listen to the song Liz. My gift to you.” Liz nodded, Jy dropping a kiss on her nose, before heading up stairs.
Part 16:
The music continued to play, leaving Liz lost in her thoughts again. A hand took hers, Liz turning to face Zan. He smiled down at her, turning her under his arm, as Future Max had done not so long ago. But instead of letting her go as Future Max had done, he simply drew her back towards him. He held her loosely, Liz knowing that she could break free of his embrace easily if she needed or wanted too.
Zan slid his hand around to the small of her back, drawing her slowly towards him, his other hand holding hers. Liz tilted her face up, watching him silently as they danced. Her eyes started to darken, Zan’s skin heating up slowly. The reaction to the close proximity of each other was heat: Pure, unbridled heat that scorched from the inside out, leaving them dewy with the slightest sheen of sweat.
“What da hell are ya doin to me?” he mumbled, licking his dry lips slowly. Liz’s eyes fluttered shut momentarily, before she shook her head. “What do you mean? That’s the second time you’ve asked me that.” Zan snorted softly. “You’re in my head, in my blood. I’m on fire.” Liz swayed slightly in his arms, Zan drawing her firmly against him.
Her head fell forwards onto his chest, Zan running his hand up her back to remove the pen from her hair. It clattered to the floor when he dropped it, neither of them noticing. Her hair rained down over his hand, silken grains of sand running through his fingertips. He ran his hands through the long strands, slowly replacing the blonde streaks with a deeper red, setting her hair on fire with the shimmering color.
He felt Liz shudder in his arms, dropping his head to her shoulder as they turned slowly. He breathed in the clean scent of her skin, smelling soap and fire, the scent slowly driving him mad. Liz slowly ran her hands up his chest, feeling him wrap both arms around her waist. She rested her hands just below his shoulders, her heart pounding as his breath skittered over her shoulder again.
He drew small circles on the base of her back with his fingertips, Liz arching slightly in his embrace. Zan lifted his head, blinking slowly as the familiar heat induced cloud closed around them. Drawing his right hand up her back slowly, he gently cupped her face, tilting her head back. Liz opened her eyes, drowning slowly in the dark depths staring down at her.
Liz licked her lips slowly, Zan silencing a small groan as he watched the tip of her pink tongue flick out from between her lips. He dragged his thumb lightly over her bottom lip, feeling the moisture on the pad of his thumb. Liz looked up at him; her eyes filled with need, yet tinged with fear, Zan knowing he had to move carefully.
Holding her face gently, he licked his lips again, and then lowered his head. Just as he went to kiss her, a voice broke through their private cloud. “Hey Zan, can ya gimme a hand up here?” Liz jerked out of his arms in fright, Zan swearing softly. He was gonna kill Jy. He looked back at Liz, who bit her bottom lip, then started to back away from him. Her eyes were filled with confusion, and as Zan watched her, emotions flickered across her face rapidly.
Desire. Fear. Confusion. Need. Lust. Something else. Liz watched Zan watch her, emotions in plain view on his face. Desire. Lust. Confusion. Frustration. Determination. She took another step away from him, and then bolted. Zan watched her go, a small smile crossing his face.
Zan entered Jy’s office quietly, leaning against the door as he watched Jy shuffle through some papers. Jy felt his gaze and lifted his eyes, frowning slightly as they regarded each other, Jy motioning to the chair across from him. “Sit down Zan, I think we need to talk.” Zan smirked, remaining where he was. “So talk,” he said, crossing his arms over his chest.
Jy bit his lip, then pressed play on the monitor in front of him. Zan glanced at the screen, his eyes darkening slightly as he watched himself dance with Liz. Jy pressed pause, turning to face Zan slowly. “Are ya dogin my girl’s cuz Zan?’ he asked softly. Zan snorted. “Please Jy, I ain’t needin no damn alien powers to get laid man, ya know that.”
Jy’s mouth tightened again, Zan rolling his eyes, as he got ready to receive moral lessons 101. He’d heard it all before, and was damn tired of it. “Lemme guess. Stay away from Liz. Ya ain’t nothin but trash. Am I right?’ he spat. Jy shook his head. “No. You aren’t trash, but you were right on the staying away from her part.”
Zan snorted, Jy rising from his chair. “I mean it Zan. She’s been to hell and back lately, and I won’t have ya use and abuse her. Remember, I’ve known you for a long time my friend, and I know how you are with woman.” Zan narrowed his eyes slightly, his anger rolling off him like an ominous cloud. He stalked over to the desk, slapping his hands down on the surface hard, the bang echoing around them.
“Yeah, ya right Jy, ya have known me a long time, so ya know I’m right when I say that I’ve shown some restraint with her. I ain’t even macked on her yet Jy, and I don’t normally think twice ‘bout fuckin some random face against da wall of ya club. Ya know this, so don’t pull this shit with me.” Jy blinked, watching as Zan sat down in the chair with a thud.
Jy sighed softly, sitting down again himself. “Look Zan, she’s a good kid. But she’s just that…a kid. Not even eighteen yet. You’ve got the years and the experience on her.” Zan snorted again. “What? So I’m eighteen. I grew up on da streets Jy, not in some cushiony fuckin palace. I was fuckin Aves at fourteen, and lemme tell ya this: in all the years I’ve been doin this city, I ain’t ever restrained myself. I ain’t ever felt da pull I’m feelin towards her.”
Jy shook his head again, Zan standing up abruptly. “Don’t fuck with me Jyrelik. Your da prince remember. I’m da fuckin king, so don’t pull ya punk arse rank shit with me. It don’t work. Not here, not ever. I keep this city clean of vermin for us, and I go to bat when Kivar pulls whatever shit he’s pullin, so don’t tell me what to fuckin do. I want her Jy. And I’ll fuckin have her, no matter what ya say.”
Jy swallowed, lowering his eyes to the table. He hadn’t seen Zan this angry in all the years he’d known him, and he was startled to find himself speaking softly. “What pull are you talking about?” he asked. Zan snorted. “She’s in my head Jy, in my blood. We got heat. Not some random smolder, but a full fledged fuckin inferno.”
Jy felt his eyes widen. “Heat as in ‘heat’?” he asked. Zan shrugged. “I dunno man, but I’ve been dreamin ‘bout her for days now, before I even saw her face, I’d been dreamin ’bout her. I feel like I know her in and out Jy. In and fuckin out man. I know how to make her laugh; I know how to make her scream. I dunno how, I just do.”
Jy nodded slowly, his mind in a tailspin. Lifting his gaze to Zan’s he spoke with a soft sigh. “Fine. But know somethin Zan. Ya hurt her, and ya gonna have a whole house of pain bought down on ya arse. Not by me friend – by Sam. They both have Spanish blood in their veins Zan, and the tempers to match. Sam won’t think twice. She’ll hunt ya down, and rip ya nuts off. If you’re gonna do this, for fucks sake, do it right.”
Zan grinned. “Spanish fire hey? I felt it da other night. Spanish fire in her blood, coursing through my veins. She’s inside of me Jy. She’s da air I breathe, da blood in my body. Believe me man, it’s gonna take a whole lotta convincin to make me turn away from this.” Jy nodded, Zan smirking as he left the office. Jy sighed softly. Now all he had to do was convince Sam not to interfere.
Part 17:
Ava woke up slowly, her eyes still heavy with sleep as she yawned softly. The arms around her waist tightened, Ava’s eyes flying open as the event of the morning came crashing back into her mind. Forcing her eyes to open, she looked over her shoulder, relaxing when she saw that Kyle was still asleep. Rolling over onto her stomach, Ava leant up on her elbows, studying him as he slept.
There were dark smudges under his eyes, telling Ava he hadn’t slept well lately. The tick in his jaw also gave strength to that opinion, his whole body tense. He twitched as he slept, Ava placing her hand over his heart gently. He stilled under her soft touch, a sigh escaping his mouth as he relaxed into a deeper sleep. Ava smiled softly, reaching up to touch the multicolored spike adorning his eyebrow.
Her thoughts drifted back to when she had heard his cry, a shadow passing over her eyes. She had been reading a magazine in her room when his cry had made her clutch her head in fright. There had been pain and betrayal in his cry, his desperation causing her to stand up to Zan for only the second time in her life. Her heart had been pounding as she ran towards him, her head and feelings on high alert.
She’d found him stumbling down the alleyway towards her, as drunk as a skunk, tears streaming down his face. She had touched his shoulder gently, Kyle turning on her violently, the bottle in his hand shattering when he cursed ay her. It had taken a few seconds for him to register that she wasn’t Tess; Ava nearly sobbing at the iron grip he once more had her in. his eyes had widened, and he’d fallen to his knees in front of her, crying brokenly in her arms.
It had taken all of Zan and Rath’s combined strength to pry him free from her, hauling him to his feet and dragging him the three blocks he’d walked back to the apartment. She had immediately recognized the loft as the one belonging to Jy, her eyes widening in surprise. Lonnie had led her inside, Liz coming off the couch in shock.
Liz. Ava sighed softly. The look on her face when she had cupped Kyle’s face had been heart breaking. Pain. Grief. Strength. Ava sighed again. It was obvious to all of them they had been intimate in the near past. They had an air of comfort and understanding about them. The way Liz had immediately relaxed in Kyle’s presence in the club, and the way he had reacted with near violence when he found Zan with Liz showed a depth of love and friendship that Ava couldn’t help but envy slightly.
Ava turned her thoughts away from the past, looking once more at Kyle. His eyelashes were long and dark, yet the tips were a pale gold, telling Ava he spent a lot of time outside. His face was chiseled, the bone structure well defined. His nose was straight, his cheekbones to die for. As for his mouth…. damn. The boy could kiss, and he knew how to use those lips.
Ava tried not to think about that kiss, but she couldn’t help it. His lips were firm, his taste intoxicating. In the time he had first pressed his mouth to hers to when he had abruptly withdrawn, he had explored her mouth with a laziness that made her think of hot afternoons, spent wrapped around his body. Ava felt heat stain her cheeks, snorting softly when she realized she was blushing. She never blushed.
Unable to help herself, she reached out slowly, tracing his bottom lip with her index finger, barely touching the satiny skin. Her finger slid from his lip slowly, down over the shadow of growth that covered his jaw, feeling the stubble tickle her finger. She was so intent on her exploration of his face, that she never saw his eyes flutter open.
Kyle slowly came to the land of the living, feeling a whisper soft caress on his lip. He opened his eyes slowly, watching Ava as she traced his jaw line. She was chewing on her lower lip, the silver ring in her mouth glinting in the dim light. She sighed softly. She hated the ring at times, so she made a choice. Ava released his face. Reaching up and removing the ring from her lip she healed the small hole slowly.
She slid the ring into her pocket, before resuming her exploration of his face. Kyle watched her through lidded eyes, taking in the differences between her and Tess. Ava had grown her hair, the loose curls resting on her shoulder, the pale blonde contrasted with hot pink. Her blue eyes were open and unguarded, some thing Tess’s had never been. There was an air of strength to both girls, but there was hidden pain and fragility in Ava, causing an air of protectiveness to wash over him.
She seemed fascinated with his lower lip, tracing the small scar he had gotten from football repeatedly. It ran just below his bottom lip, the scar pale in contrast to the tan he had. She moved on the bed, sitting up slowly and tracing the stubble down his throat slowly. Her finger dipped into the hollow of his throat, before smoothing along his collarbone. She ran her finger down the center of his chest, her head tilted to the side, nibbling on her lower lip.
Running her finger down over his ribs, she circled his belly button, dipping inside of it before running her hand over the muscles in his stomach. His skin was tanned, Ava smelling the warmth of the desert emitting from his pores. She breathed in the clean scent deeply, her eyes closing slightly, before she once more ran her hand over his ribs. She heard him suck in a deep breath, knowing he was awake and that she’d been caught.
She looked up, blushing when she met Kyle’s blue eyes. “Sorry” she whispered, Kyle nodding slowly. “That’s ok.” “Ya aiight now?” she asked softly. Kyle frowned slightly, and then nodded. “Yeah. I think I am. It hurts, but I understand now why she’s leaving. I just don’t understand how she could play me the way she did.” Ava sighed softly.
“I dunno Kyle. I only spent a few minutes with Tess, so I honestly couldn’t give ya da insight into what makes her tick. It was mad dog wrong what she did to ya, but maybe it’s for da best. Ya know, da baby livin and all. If she’d stayed and da baby died, ya would have never forgiven yaself.” Kyle looked up at her silently.
“How do ya know that?” he finally asked. Ava smiled. “Dunno. Just do. Ya seem to take da best with da worst, but this would have killed ya either way. Knowing ya could of let her go, but made her stay. Tess lived with a man who gave her no affection, only a destiny. It takes strength to turn ya back on all ya know. She did that, but couldn’t stay that way.”
Kyle frowned slightly. “She said it was chemical. What did she mean?’ Ava sighed again. “Heat. It takes ya over, makes ya hot. Ya throw caution to da wind because of it, and damn all da consequences. Ya don’t really have a choice in da matter, it just takes over.” Kyle nodded slowly. “Do you and Zan have this heat?” he asked.
Ava shook her head. “No. We had lust, and we had a damn good time, but never heat. Not that way. I never really gave myself to him fully. I always felt like he was waitin for someone else to walk into his life, and when I thought he was dead, I turned my back on him in that way. We ain’t bounced in nearly six months now. Da last time was ‘bout two weeks before he ‘died.’ And now, it just don’t feel right. Lonnie and Rath though? They have it.”
She smiled at him gently. “What ‘bout you and Liz?” Kyle blushed, shaking his head. “No, we’re not together. We decided we were better off as friends. No need to complicate things.” Ava smirked. “Zan’ll be happy to know that” she chuckled, Kyle sitting up quickly. He went to protest, Ava placing her fingers against his lips to silence him.
“Forget it Kyle. Ya know da heat we were just talkin ‘bout?” Kyle nodded. “They got heat. Whether ya want it to or not, it’s gonna happen. Zan wants her, and he always gets what he wants. Da fact that they got heat…. no chance in hell of stoppin it.” Kyle sighed. “I don’t want her to get hurt again,” he mumbled. Ava smiled gently.
“He won’t hurt her Kyle. When I first met Liz, even back then, I knew, if Zan ever met her, he’d be a goner. He’s holdin back. That speaks volumes for him. Trust him. Trust us. We ain’t gonna hurt ya’ll.” Kyle sighed, and then spoke quietly. “What about you?” Ava shrugged. “I’m lookin for normal. For da guy who’s gonna love me coz he chooses too, not coz of destiny. I ain’t gonna settle for anythin less.”
Kyle smiled softly. “How about friendship?” he mumbled. Ava smiled at him, her whole face lighting up. “I’d like that a lot Kyle.” He nodded, and shut his eyes, Ava watching as he once more went to sleep. The phone rang, Ava grabbing it with out thinking. “Yeah?” she said softly, watching as Kyle grunted and curled his body around hers, resting his head on her thigh.
“Is Kyle there?” a male asked. Ava smiled slightly as he started snoring. “Yeah, but he’s sleepin right now. Whose this?” “Michael.” The bedroom door swung open, banging against the wall. Ava looked up, watching as Rath winced apologetically, Lonnie smacking him on the back of the head. “Damn Rath, keep it da fuck down aiight. Lonnie, keep da freak on a leash” she spat, turning back to the phone. Dial tone met her ears. She shrugged, returning the phone to the cradle.
