I feel like yelling at both the men for just walking out of the room and leaving me with the lady doc. What the hell am I supposed to talk to her? I hate making polite conversation! Max shot me a warning look before leaving, so I guess he expects me to make her feel at home which I suppose I would have to do anyway if he is marrying her.
"Please sit down." I wave my hand motioning for her to take a seat "I take it that you're the one Max chose. You must be special. He's quite a fussy person when it comes to people and I know you must have made an impression on him for him to have wanted to meet you."
Hannah comes in at that moment, "Hannah could please get Doctor Parker and me a two glasses of iced tea, please." I turn to look at Elizabeth "I hope that's okay, unless you would like to drink something else?"

I almost panic when Alex and Max leave the room. It's suddenly dropped about 20 degrees. I sit down when she orders me to like a queen and when she asks the maid to bring us some iced tea, I know who is mistress of this house. "I-iced tea w-would be nice, thank-thank you," I manage to stutter out. This woman is so beautiful and I feel a little like a frumpy crone next to her. I clear my throat and try to smile but I know it doesn't come out naturally.
"I didn't really catch your name...or how you know Max," I say as a way to hopefully break the ice. Her words a few minutes ago about Max choosing me didn't sound like she really approved of all this. She kind of emphasized the "must" when she said I must be special...almost like she hadn't any idea why.

I notice that she seems uneasy but it's not my fault, I haven't done anything but try and be polite.
"I didn't really catch your name...or how you know Max." she says hesitantly
I frown when she says that, "I am Max's sister, Isabel and I live here as well." I know that came out rather coldly but I couldn't help myself
"Do you have any family?" I ask and then quickly add "Aside from your best friends of course." before I have to her another story about what wonderful friends she has in Maria and Alex, that they are like family.

"Do you have any family?" she asks and I look down at my hands as I think on her question. She sounds like she's trying to be polite and she certainly is beautiful. It's suddenly very important to me, for some unknown reason that she like me.
I glance back up at her and smile. "I have a great-aunt that lives in Florida that I see maybe once a year. We're not that close. Other than that and a few distant cousins that I have never met, I don't have any family." I can't help the tears that fill my eyes but I quickly blink them back, glad to have enough will power and strength to keep them from flowing freely. It's still hard to think about my parents and my grandmother. "So are you and Max close?" I ask, quickly trying to get the focus off of myself.

"Is there anything you think I should know? I doubt Liz left anything out... but is there something as her friend you think I should know?"
I think about the question for a moment, trying to decide if there is something I just *have* to tell the guy. I can't think of anything that would not violent the 'best friends' rule Maria and Liz made up once, so I just shrug. "No, sorry, I can't really tell you the embarrassing stuff of Liz's life yet and I don't think Liz kept something from you."

Michael shoots me a devastatingly handsome smile that sends tingles all the way down to my toes. His gaze shifts from my blushing face to the pleasant older lady behind the counter. There seems to be a familiarity between the looks they exchange. He must really love pastries. "I'd like a tall spice chai tea, and a chocolate `eclair also." Wow, he appreciates a little spice does he? I’ll be sure to keep that in mind. *Wink Wink*
"The drinks will be a moment, you can go ahead and take a seat if you'd like," The woman offers with a gentle grin that makes me believe that she knows something I don’t. I watch in utter fascination as she reaches into the shelf and retrieves our purchases. The kind waitress places them in he bag and then hands them over the Michael who places his free hand on the small of my back. I inhale deeply wanting to savor the slight touch but the sweet moment is interrupted when he gestures for me to choose a table.
I do so by making my way over to the small booth in the corner. It’s cozy and not to mention private. That way we can discuss whatever we like without having to worry about innocent ease dropping. Once seated I reach into my bag wanted to grab some spare napkins when I notice the flashing light on my cell phone. Huh? Frantically I flip it over. One Missed Call? How is that possible? I must have never heard it ring. Oh my God!!! What if it was Liz?! I am the most horrible awful terrible appealing nasty dreadful atrocious ghastly…
( Okay I am running out of synonyms for bad) friend ever! “I’m soo sorry but I need to make a quick phone call.” I stammer immediately fearing the worst. I bet that King dude is a real smooth talker. There’s no telling what he’s convinced my tender hearted good natured cheerful friendly (Sorry I even babble in my thoughts) friend to do. I hit one which goes directly to my voice mail and sure enough my worst fears are confirmed. This emperor or whatever has dragged my Lizzie to parts unknown.
There isn’t much I can do but just sit back, enjoy an éclair, and pray to a God I’m not sure I believe in that she doesn’t come back to me debauched or tainted in any way. I close my phone and turn back to my puzzled companion. I flash him an apologetic expression before slipping my phone back into my purse. ”You know that friend I’ve been telling you about? Well, she’s been kidnapped.” I pause for dramatic effect before continuing,
“Well technically she went willingly but there is no telling what kind of freaky alien voodoo he performed on her to get her to agree.” I run a frustrated hand through my long blonde locks. I hope she’s okay. Liz and Alex are family. I don’t think I can lose anyone else that I’m close to.

She seems to get upset while talking about her family and that makes me uncomfortable. It wasn't my intention to make her dredge up bad memories.
"So are you and Max close?" she asks changing the topic
"Yes!" I answer promptly "That is why I was so surprised by this sudden arrangement to marry someone from another species. No offence meant to you of course."
The iced-tea is served and we both take our glasses and sip our drinks almost simultaneously.
An uneasy silence resumes until I decide to ask her about Max, "So what do you think of Max?" I know I am being blunt bu that is the way I am

I think about my answer long and hard before finally starting with, "He's not exactly what I had been expecting." I see her bristle up and I realize that I'd better clarify that. "I mean, I kept hearing about this alien king...this great leader of his people and how brave and great he is for everything that he's doing and will do for everyone. I guess I was expecting someone confident, maybe even arrogant, used to giving orders and having them fulfilled without any arguments..." I trail off not really sure where else to go with that line of thinking.
Smiling at the memory of the look of uncertainty on his face the first time I saw him, I swallow another sip of tea and shake my head. Quietly I say, "But he surprised me. He's so quiet and humble...unsure of himself...well maybe unsure of himself isn't the right term, but afraid of making a wrong desicion for everyone. He's a very nice guy and seems so genuine. I really was happily surprised and I really like him."
I startle myself at my words and clear my throat nervously, wondering if I've said too much. His sister is staring at me and I can't tell what she's thinking. Giving a nervous laugh, I admit, "I really don't know why he wanted to meet me of all the girls in the world. I guess he's probably meeting with several of them to see which one he likes best...which one would be the best for his people."
