A little Kiss and some Memories…
Liz woke up early and made her way to the kitchen, she was surprised to find Max standing at the stove wearing an apron making pancakes. She walked over and peeked over his shoulder, “what is this?” she asked.
“I am cooking for you this morning, sit down and have some juice these flapjacks will be ready soon.” He told her.
Liz turned to go and sit at the table and laughed when she saw a half sleeping Michael sipping on some coffee. She turned back to Max just as he was about to flip the pancake, “would you like a little bit of help?”
Max shook his head, “No, I am cooking for you now go and sit down like a good girl.” He said as he turned the pancake over just barely getting it back on the grill.
Liz laughed, “are you sure you can handle this?” she asked sounding skeptical.
Max shook his head and laughed, “Yes I am sure, look I have three separate degrees on business, political science, and history, I think I can manage to read a recipe and make some pancakes.”
“Alright then, I will just sit down over here and wait with Michael.” She told him trying not to laugh as he spilled batter on the counter. “Good Morning Michael why are you up so early?” she asked as she sat down next to him.
“Your husband the chef came in just after 6:00 begging for help.” Michael explained his eyes barely open.
Max laughed, “Yeah well I just wanted to see how well those lessons Liz gave you worked out that’s all.”
“Yeah well I am getting paid for this, it’s over time, and my shift doesn’t usually begin until after 7:00.” Michael told him as he tried to keep from yawning.
Liz got up and poured Michael some more coffee, “Oh poor Michael, here have another cup it will help you to keep your eyes open today.” She said as she sat back down. Max was busy working on some sort of fruit concoction when Isabel and Alex came into the kitchen, “so this is where everyone is hiding?” she said walking over and sitting at the table while Alex poured them both a cup of coffee.
Isabel looked over and saw Max standing at the stove with an apron tide around his waist and laughed, “Oh Max what on earth are you doing?”
He glanced over his shoulder, “I am cooking breakfast what does it look like I am doing?” he said as one of the pancakes began to burn.
Isabel laughed, “Liz what ever have you done to him.”
“Don’t blame me, I got up and found him cooking this wasn’t my idea.” She laughed.
“Alright, enough all you, I wanted to make breakfast for Liz so I gave Hilda the morning off. Now here try these…” he said as he placed a large serving platter of different sized pancakes drenched in strawberries in front of them. Liz smiled and took three small pancakes on her plate as did the others. Then she reached over and used the spoon to place more of the strawberries and syrup on top. Max waited patiently as she took her first bite, “Well…what do you think?” he asked.
Liz tried not to gag as she grabbed her napkin and spit out her food then reached for her glass of juice and drank the entire glass in one gulp. “Oh Max that was …well you did use sugar for the fruit topping didn’t you?”
Max looked back over to the counter and the two containers sitting there, “Yeah, I think so why?”
“Well it taste like you used salt by mistake….” She told him trying not to laugh.
Max walked over to the counter while everyone else pushed their plate away, “Hey how about we head over to my moms for breakfast?” Alex asked.
“I’m in” Michael said as Maria walked into the room.
“In for what?” she asked. Michael grabbed her hand and pulled her along behind him, “I will explain on the way, come on.” He said as Isabel, and Alex headed for the car.
Liz walked over and stood behind Max, “So want me to fix us something or do you want to go to my moms?” She asked trying not to laugh.
Max shook his head, “I can’t believe that I mixed up salt for sugar….” He said sounding pitiful.
Liz patted him on the back, “Well …it happens.” She said trying to make him feel better.
Max turned around to face her, “So then this is a really common mistake for a first time cook?” he asked.
Liz couldn’t hold it back any longer, she busted out laughing, “No not really, I am sorry. Don’t feel bad though at least you tried.” She told him.
He pulled her into his arms and laughed, “Well I guess that makes me pretty hopeless I can’t even follow a recipe ugh?”
“Well not hopeless, just in need of some one on one instruction.” Liz said as she wrapped her arms around his neck.
Max whispered softly, “Well now I like the sound of that,” then he captured her mouth with his for a very passionate kiss. Liz whished that they could continue this exchange upstairs in one of their rooms but didn’t know how to tell him that she wanted to be with him. Max was the first to pull him self away, “I guess we should go with the others to your moms since I ruined breakfast.”
Liz sighed, “Yeah I guess we should.” She agreed. Max untied the apron and pulled Liz along behind him as they made their way to the car.
It wasn’t a long drive to her parent’s house and Liz was excited to show Max where she grew up. Liz pointed out several places along the way that had special meaning to her for one reason or another. Max loved listening to her; she was so open to sharing every little detail with him. “Here we are this is where I live….I mean where I grew up.” She stopped and corrected herself.
“Its beautiful here, I can see why you were having a hard time giving it up.” He told her as they got out of the car and headed into the front of the house. Nancy Parker was so excited to see everyone and they spent all morning catching up. Max loved the close net feeling that they all shared with one another. After Liz helped with clean up she walked over and took Max’s hand into hers and pulled him along behind her, “Come on I will show you my backyard.”
Max followed Liz out the back door and on to the porch; He stopped and looked out across the beach. “This is so beautiful Lizzie; I bet it was wonderful growing up here.”
“It was I love the ocean.” She said taking in a deep breath thinking about how much she missed being home. “Want to go surfing?” she asked.
Max shook his head, “Surfing…you know how to surf?”
Liz nodded her head, “Yea, would you like me to teach you how?” she asked.
Max laughed, “You’re amazing, it seems like I learn something new about you everyday.” He told her. “Alright, let me tell James, I don’t want to make his job to difficult. I am not sure if he can shadow us while you teach me to surf.”
“Ok but this is a semi private beach, the only ones every around are some little children that come down in the summer to visit with their dad.” Liz told him as she walked over to the garage and pulled out her board and began walking down towards the water. Max called to both Michael and James, “Liz wants to go surfing; logistically how hard is that for you guys.”
“I’m good with it Max, I actually know how to surf so I can head out with the two of you just let me grab another board from the garage.” Michael told him.
“There is extra security here so we should be fine.” James explained as he positioned himself on the beach.
Isabel, Alex, and Maria made their way out to watch with Max as Liz swam out just beyond the cove then stood up and skillful maneuvered her way back into shoe with out ever loosing her balance.
Max was truly impressed as he ran out into the water to greet her. “That was so awesome.”
“Hop on the board and I will take you out with me.” She said as Max waded out to where she was and joined her on the board.
Isabel smiled, “Can you surf too?”
“Yeah, do you want to give it a try princess?” Alex asked her.
She shook her head, “I’m not sure, is it safe?”
“Absolutely, besides I wouldn’t ever do anything to put you in any kind of danger.” He whispered in her ear then went to get another board.
Michael motioned for Maria to join him but she shook her head and lay out on the beach instead. “I want to get some sun, besides your working remember.” She yelled to him.
The rest of the afternoon Liz spent trying to teach Max how to surf. By the time they finished he actually was doing pretty well. “This has been wonderful Lizzie, thanks for sharing this with me.” He said as they floated into the shore.
“I’m glad you’re having fun.” She said as he stopped and stared at the cliff next to her house, “Is something wrong Max?” she asked waiting for him to get off the board and join her on the blanket for some sun. Max didn’t say anything he hopped off the board and stuck it into the sand then walked over and stood above Liz, “I have been here before?”
Liz laughed, “What are you talking about?”
“This cliff, I have been here before, and the house…I don’t know why I didn’t recognize it before now but I have been here before?” Max said as he turned to look at the back of the house and then over towards the cliffs.
“I don’t think so Max, I have lived here my entire life, believe me if you had ever visited my house I would have known it, I mean look at how much security is out here, that’s not something you miss.” She teased him as she got to her feet and stood just behind him.
“No I know I have been here before, these cliffs over here, they lead into a small inlet right?” he asked pointing over toward the rocks that were now completely covered surrounded by water.
Liz stood up and shook her head, “Yeah, when the tide is out you can get around the ledge and into the cove but it can be tricky.” She told him.
“Yeah I know, I remember…it was just before the tide was do to come back in and there was a little…” he turned and looked at her “It was you.” He said softly.
“Me…what are you talking about?” Liz asked trying to make sense of what it was he was saying.
“You said you lived here your whole life right?” He repeated to her. Liz nodded her head yes. “You also said that this is a semi private beach not to many people ever come around right?” again Liz nodded. “Then it had to be you, I made my way out around these cliffs and I was exploring around the inlet, I got stuck some how and you came and helped me.” He told her remembering the day more clearly.
Liz smiled and looked into his eyes, “There was a boy, he said his name was Max but I had no idea that was you…is that why those men came chasing after you that day, you ran away and they were looking for you ugh?” she said.
Max pulled her into his arms and laughed, “Yeah, I did. I was always trying to take off on my own and that day I was out exploring for hours before they found me. I remember that you came and pulled my foot free and we made it back to shore just in time before the waves crashed in.” he told her.
Liz couldn’t believe what she was hearing, “That’s not all that happened.” She told him softly.
“I don’t remember too much after that, you’ll have to refresh my memory for me...” he said his mouth just inches away from hers.
Liz stared into his eyes intently, “Well you said I had the most beautiful brown eyes you had ever seen and then…” she told him.
Max pulled her closer to him and whispered softly, “I remember that, then what happened.” He said in a deep husky voice.
Liz wrapped her hands around his neck and pulled his head even closer to hers, “Then you kissed me, it was the first kiss I had ever gotten…” she told him.
Max captured her mouth with his and closed the last little bit of space in between them. He had forgotten for all these years, he had put the fantasy about the little brown eyed girl out of his mind thinking them to childish but now here he was holding her, kissing her, and she was his wife. Max pulled away just a bit and whispered softly, “It was the first kiss I had ever given…”
“Hey mister…can you help us.” A little boy shouted from down the beach a ways.
Max turned to look at the small boy and girl who where playing in the sand not to far down the beach from where they were. Liz smiled, “Oh that’s Sara and Bobby, the two kids I was telling you about, they come every summer to see their dad.” Liz explained.
“Hey can you help us build a castle…please?” Sara called out to them.
Max shook his head, “Sure.” He yelled as he walked towards them. Liz followed him. “So what seems to be the trouble here?” Max asked as he sat down in the sand next to Bobby.
“I’m not sure but I think that we are to close to the water, the sand keeps sinking.” He explained his voice sounding a bit frustrated.
“I remember you; your name is Liz ugh?” Sara said shyly.
“Yep, how are you doing Sara?” Liz asked.
“I heard you got married to the prince is that true?” she asked excited.
Liz laughed, “Yeap I did. Would you like to meet him?” she asked the little girl.
“Ugh huh.” She said simply.
“Sara…this is his royal highness Prince Maxwell Aaron Evens, this is Sara and her little brother Bobby.” Liz introduced them.
“Hey I’m not little.” Bobby protested.
“Oh I am sorry I meant her younger brother Bobby.” Liz corrected herself.
Sara turned to face Max and made a small curtsy, “Hello Your Highness, it is very nice to meet you.” She said softly.
Max smiled and shook her hand, “Well it is very nice to meet you both, but you don’t have to call me your highness... just call me Max, ok.” He said and Sara nodded her head. “Now about this castle, I think your right Bobby if we move back a few more feet away from the water we will be able to build a great sand castle.”
“As big as the one you live in?” Sara asked excitedly.
Max laughed, “Well we can try can’t we.” He said helping them move their shovels and buckets further up the beach a bit to avoid the waves. Liz watched Max as he interacted with Sara and Bobby. She was amazed at how relaxed he was with the two of them. She smiled he would make a wonderful father some day she thought. She looked back over towards Old Mans Cove and smiled, she would not have ever guessed that she and Max had meant all those years ago. She tried to picture Max as he looked that day, and realized that she did see some of the resemblance that was there. How funny she never believed in fate before but now she was beginning too. Perhaps this really was her destiny all along, to grow up and marry the man of her dreams, the man that had grown from the little boy who had given her, her first kiss. A moment she had dreamed about often. Max stood up and walked over to her, “Hey penny for your thoughts?” he whispered softly.
Liz smiled, “I was thinking about you and I meeting all those years ago…” she told him.
“I know it’s pretty remarkable that you and I would end up married, I mean I wouldn’t even be standing here if it had not been for you, you saved my life that day.” Max told her. “It’s funny when my father first showed me your picture, it was your eyes, I loved your beautiful brown eyes, it was like I knew that you were the one I was suppose to marry, like some how this was more then just a chance thing for you and I and that was why I agreed to the marriage.” He told her. “That sounds silly doesn’t it?” he whispered.
Liz shook her head, “Not at all. I thought about that helpless little boy stuck in the rocks once or twice growing up too.”
“Hey I wasn’t helpless; I probably could have gotten my ankle free eventually.” He said trying to sound tuff.
Liz laughed, “Sure you would of when the tide had come in and your head was about 3 feet under water.”
Max laughed, “Yea ok.” He agreed reluctantly.
“Hey Max, I finished the moat come on, now we can work on the tower.” Bobby told him.
“Well come on we can’t have a castle without a tower now can we?” Max said he went back over to the sand castle they had been working on. Liz followed along and sat down next to Sara and began working on the back portion of the castle.
It was almost 6:00 by the time they finished their castle and Bobby and Sara’s father called for them to come home for dinner. Max took Liz in his hand as they walked back over to her parent’s house, where Nancy had dinner all ready for them. After having firsts and seconds of her famous Chicken stuffed tacos Max and Liz sat down together on the porch swing to relax, “Thanks for having us Mrs. Parker.” Max said.
“Please Max call me Mom, we are family after all.” She insisted before heading back into the kitchen to make sure everyone else was finished eating.
“Your family is great Lizzie; I really like both your parents very much.” He told her.
“Thanks Max, I know they feel the same way about you too.” She admitted.
“So today was fun, I mean just hanging out with your family and friends here. I really enjoyed my self.” He told her.
Liz smiled, “I did too. I was a little worried that you might find it boring since it is such departure from your routine and well all the press and attention.” She said softly.
“Not at all, I mean I know I must seem like a workaholic but truth is I really would rather spend my time with you.” He told her.
Liz smiled and took his hand in hers, “Max, can I ask you a question?”
“Yes of course Lizzie, you don’t have to keep asking me first either, if there is something that you want to know please just ask me alright.” He told her as he sat back in the swing and sipped his tea.
Liz nodded her head, “Ok, I was just wondering about you and Ava…did you bring her here for vacations?”
Max’s attitude abruptly changed, “No…she didn’t like the sun at all.” He said quietly not wanting to think about her.
Liz could tell at once that he didn’t like talking about his late wife so she didn’t say anything more. Max knew that he did not handle that to well, he let out a small sigh, “Ava was not very interested in the beach, or the sun…this kind of vacation would have driven her crazy. She really loved the attention and the lime light more then I ever did.” He explained.
Liz lay her head against his shoulder, “Oh, well I am really glad that you and I get to share this with each other, being with you has been wonderful Max, I love…” she started to say but stopped when he turned to look at her directly.
“I love the ocean, and well it’s just been great sharing it with you.” She said trying to cover her almost slip.
Max smiled, “Yeah, it’s great; I had forgotten how much I enjoyed being here.” He said as Isabel came out to get Liz.
“Show me your room; I am going to be using it, if that is alright.” Isabel told her.
“Sure, come on I will show you where it is.” Liz told her then took her up to the room.
Afterwards they said good bye to Liz’s parents and made their way back to the beach house. Liz noticed the skies were getting dark as the limo pulled up in front of the house. Max stepped out and opened the door for her. “We are going to get a storm.” She told him.
“You think so, maybe it will just blow past.” Max said.
“No this one is going to hit us for sure, didn’t you notice the sky this morning?” she asked as they walked into the house.
“I guess I wasn’t paying attention what about the sky?” He asked her.
“Well it was red sky just after sunrise; there is an old sailor’s lore that goes like this “red sky at night…sailors delight. Red sky in the morning…sailors take warning.” She repeated the lore for him.
“And this means what exactly?” he asked puzzled.
Liz laughed, “It means since there was a red sky this morning that it is going to storm and sailors on board ship can prepare for it, if their was a red sky at night it’s a sailors delight, smooth sailing ahead less work to do.” She explained.
“Well aren’t you just a wealth of silly and strange knowledge.” Max teased her.
“Mock me if you will but we are going to have a storm tonight, and judging by those clouds rolling in it will be a nasty one too.” Liz told him.
Max was about to say something when Thomas walked in, “I just wanted to let you know that I secured the sail boats down on the dock sir, we are in for a nasty storm this evening.”
Max shook his head, “Well perhaps the storm will pass.” He suggested as he glanced over towards Liz.
“Oh no sir, I don’t think so the sky was brilliant red this morning, its going to storm for sure.” Thomas said and then made his way back out to the kitchen.
Liz looked over at Max and busted up laughing, “I told you so.” She said then headed to the kitchen for a snack. He watched her go as she left the room then he walked over and looked out the window. He didn’t like storms very much so he was hoping that it would just pass them. He thought about the day they had shared together, he smiled when he thought back to that day when she rescued him from the rocks all those years ago. He had always thought about going back and trying to find that beautiful little browned eyed girl some day, just to see what she was like, he remembered dreaming about her so often when he was young. It was strange how things worked to bring them together again, he smiled. The truth was if he had not left the decision to find him a new wife up to his father he may have never found Liz. He thought about what his life might belike right now with out her, he cared very much for her and wanted to make her happy, he almost thought she was going to profess that she loved him before but she had only been talking about the ocean. In a way that was a relief for him, he knew that as much as he cared for her and wanted her, he was not sure he was in love, or was he just to afraid to feel that kind of pain again, to let him self love he wondered?
See Ya
