Damn you Val! You interrupted some potentially HOT action....though strangely enough they are both pretty injured and still wanting to make out...Bane more than Maria...perhaps. I hope things with Tess and Kyle are ok. I loved Val's recollection of being caught by Kyle...hilarious. Excited for more~

Part 25
begonia9508: Thanks for reading!
Earth2Mama: That’s definitely something that could go either way but we’ll find out today what she’s feeling.
As promised Val will be checking in on their situation soon.
Roswelllostcause: Yeah, lol, Val has great timing, doesn’t she?
keepsmiling7: It helped chase that exhaustion away for a bit.
L-J-L 76: Thanks!
Val keeps her cards close to the chest and she doesn’t reveal anything that she doesn’t think is absolutely necessary. We’ll have to wait to find out what’s going on with Max and Liz.
sarammlover: Lol, she did interrupt the potential for something happening. Call it a heat of the moment thing... it’s definitely what Bane will call it. Val will check in with the situation with Kyle and Tess and report back. Yeah, Val isn’t as fond of that memory, lol.
A/N: We are taking a one week break and will be back July, 25th.
Part 25
“He didn’t make it back...,” she repeated his words, but they didn’t make sense.
“The yacht was rigged with explosives. From the sounds of it the bomb activated when he started the engine. News reports indicate you were also onboard at the time of the explosion.”
Maria stared at him as if she couldn’t understand the words he spoke. “What’re you sayin’-”
“He’s dead,” he said bluntly. Was there any other way to say it? When your number was up, it was up. That’s all there was to it.
“Dead,” she whispered, turning to face the window again as his words sank in. No, they had mostly disagreed on things and a lot of things indicated his involvement with whatever was going on, but he was the only relative she had left and now he was gone. A heavy feeling of loneliness spread in her chest.
“Look, you’re better off without that guy anyway.”
How sensitive, she thought, not moving from her spot. Maybe she was, but that thought wasn’t comforting. Not a tiny bit.
He shook his head, not understanding. “Anyway, Valkyrie’s comin’ here, tomorrow if she can keep to the schedule.”
“Is she bringing Alex?” she asked hoarsely.
“She’s bringin’ company,” he answered noncommittally.
At least Alex would be around, she thought thankfully. “I’m gonna take a look around the cabin.”
He watched her but forced himself to remain rooted to the spot. “Stay clear of the windows.”
She didn’t acknowledge that she had heard him, wandering though the huge cabin and finding another bedroom, a small sauna, a hot tub on the balcony off the master bedroom and a very comfortable living room with a fireplace. Michael had lit a fire so she sat in front of it, pulling her knees towards her as she stared into the flames.
Bane didn’t bother following her, leaving her to her own devices while he cleaned up the small mess they’d made. He loaded the dishwasher and went down to the basement to pull out a couple of steaks to thaw for dinner. He had no idea what to do with Maria so he decided to take inventory of the weapons in the locked gun rack in one of the rooms.
Hours passed without them speaking. She drew comfort from the warm surroundings but it only helped a little. At some point she had gotten up to lay down on the couch since her muscles hurt. When she woke again she could hear him somewhere in the cabin, but she didn’t bother asking if she could help because the empty feeling in her was eating up all her willpower to get up.
What was she going to do when this was over? She shook her head at that thought. NO, this wouldn’t be over. It was just a matter of time before she followed her uncle.
He went into the kitchen, checking the steaks that were now thawed, and he marinated them before setting them aside for a while longer. He had moved around the cabin, checking the windows and doors, memorizing the layout over and over, and making notes about trouble spots. Basically, he was bored, and it didn’t make sense. He paused in the living room doorway and watched Maria for a few minutes before his feet carried him deeper into the room. The light outside was fading as day gave way to night once again. “You know how to cook steak?” He didn’t know what to do with her, but maybe keeping her busy would keep her mind occupied. She hadn’t moved much all day and he was concerned that she was obsessing over someone who wasn’t worth her time, someone who was probably responsible to some degree for the deaths of her family when she was a child.
“Isn’t it just a matter of throwing them into a pan and then turning ‘em over?”
He opened his mouth but snapped it shut again and shook his head. “Are you serious?”
Maria shrugged and sat up on the couch. “That’s as much as I know about steaks. Take it or leave it.”
“Fine, it’ll do.” He grabbed the remote and dropped down in the recliner. “No baking potatoes, but there’re mashed potatoes, canned potatoes, rice, or frozen potatoes. I’m not picky.”
“Me neither.”
He slouched down and grabbed a throw pillow, wedging it between his injured side and the arm of the chair, sighing when it relieved the pressure there. He’d noticed earlier that there were plenty of movie channels to choose from so he quickly switched channels from CNN to a higher number, scrolling through the list of movies that were starting soon.
Maria turned to lie on her back, staring up at the ceiling while he picked the TV program. “So you said I’m officially dead as well?”
“That’s what they’re reporting,” he said with a sideways glance at her.
“Well, at least they won’t look for me then and I won’t be plastered to the walls on a missing person poster.”
“No, and that’s a good thing for now.”
She nodded. “I feel like a dead person.”
He arched an eyebrow and scrolled to the next movie. “How do you feel like a dead person when you’ve never been dead?” He scanned the movie description and rolled his eyes at the decidedly feminine content. No thanks, next.
“I actually was. My heart stopped two times on the way to the hospital.”
He stared at her for a moment before redirecting his attention to the screen. Another chick flick, pass. Guy-on-guy action, hell no, pass. Girl-on-girl action, well... that had promise.
“Are you really considering playing a lesbian movie now?” She rolled her eyes.
“Why not?”
“Well, because I’m here, too? And I’m not interested in that kinda stuff.”
“Oh, well, if guy-on-guy’s more your thing you’re outta luck ‘cause I’ve got the remote and I’m not interested in bein’ scarred for life.”
Maria made a face. “I’m not into any of that either. Just turn on something decent for God’s sake.”
He looked over the list and selected one just to be irritating. “How about regular ol’ porn?” he asked, watching her from the corner of his eye as the couple on screen went at it in some completely improbable situation.
She blushed at the sight and stood up. “Ungh, that’s ridiculous.”
He tipped his head to one side. “I’d have to agree. He’d never have her screamin’ like that in that position.”
Her eyes turned to the TV and she winced when the display of sex was more than graphic. “Bet she’s concentrating more on not losing her balance than his dick.”
He laughed outright at her comment and switched the channel again. “Like I said, completely improbable.”
“Have you tried many different... positions?” she asked curiously, leaning against the back of the couch.
He shrugged. “Enough to know what I like.”
“An’ what do you like?”
“I like sex and lots of it, Blondie.”
She rolled her eyes. “I meant which positions.” God, it took all her courage talk about sex in front of him but what did she have to lose? Nada.
“Depends on the mood, depends on the woman, depends on the location... in bed, up against a wall, in the car, showers are great and serve a dual purpose, kitchen counters and tables work, pretty much any piece of sturdy furniture will work. I knew this one chick who liked to be fucked from behind while she did the mornin’ crossword puzzle. Never did figure out how she could concentrate on the answers when she told me that.” He shot a smug grin at her. “She wasn’t fillin’ in those little squares while I was fuckin’ her though.”
She shifted uncomfortably at his words. Or was it something else too that left her with an awkward feeling in her gut? “Well, that’s a lot,” she dropped her gaze to the carpet, her cheeks probably as red as they felt.
He followed her gaze and couldn’t help going on. “The floor’s good, but then you’ve gotta deal with rug burn later on. Doesn’t matter so much in the moment, but afterwards, well, that’s a different story.”
Her eyes shot up and she didn’t miss the teasing smirk. “Have you ever been with a virgin?”
He shook his head. “No.” V-girls wanted ties, they wanted some guy who gave a shit about them, and they wanted a guy who was interested in saying and doing all the right things their first time out of the gate.
“Because you didn’t want to or because you never had the chance?”
“If I wanted to do a virgin, I could’ve done it several times. But inexperienced girls want a guy who plans to stick around, Blondie. I’m not that guy. And I might be an asshole, but I’m not about to do some chick with romantic notions of what that magical first time’s all about.” He rolled his eyes. He didn’t have any experience with virgins, but from his understanding that first time for a chick wasn’t anywhere close to being magical and it wasn’t necessarily that great.
She nodded, her heart hammering wildly against her ribs when she tried to find the courage to ask her next question. “Would you make an exception for me?” Last night he had wanted to touch her, right? Or had it been in her imagination?
His head snapped to the side and he frowned as he stared at her. “What the hell did you just say?”
Oh, he had understood her perfectly well. “I don’t expect you to be romantic. I just want to... before...”
“You want me to fuck you so you don’t die a virgin?” He got up and threw the remote in the chair, moving to stand in front of her, his hands gripping the back of the couch on either side of her as he leaned in close. “And what would you like, Blondie? Want me to bend you over the couch and do you right here?” His hand moved to slowly pull the tongue of his belt free. “We can start with a blowjob.”
Her eyes dropped to his hands and widened in shock and also a little fear.
“Yeah, you don’t want a guy like me to punch your V-card.” He slipped the belt back through its loop and he backed away from her. He had to keep his distance and the best way to do that was to push her away. She was a complication he didn’t need. He’d always believed himself to be impervious to the kind of involvement a woman like her would require from a man and their constant contact was threatening those beliefs.
“Why not? You’re experienced.” She dared to look at him. “You said I didn’t know what I was missing and if.... if you don’t do it then I won’t ever find out.”
He bit back a groan at the challenge in her eyes and the blush on her cheeks. She was trying her damnedest to maintain eye contact in the face of his attitude and he admired that. “Look, I get what you’re sayin’, but I’m not the right guy. Ask your friend when he gets here.”
“Alex?” She laughed. “No.”
“He’s got a dick, doesn’t he?”
“I’m not attracted to him.”
“Oh, for fuck’s sake! You’re not attracted to me, it’s just the circumstances! If we’d just met someplace and I was some random guy you’d never have looked twice. You probably would’ve shown good judgment and run the other way.”
“Why does it matter? We can’t change our circumstances. Last night you wanted to touch me. What’s different now?”
“Offerin’ to get you off was one thing. Takin’ you to bed’s somethin’ else altogether.”
“What?” She looked at him, confused until his words completely registered. “So you’d touch me but you wouldn’t sleep with me?”
“Yeah, last night that’s what would’ve happened.”
But now it wouldn’t. She didn’t have to ask since the answer was clearly written across his hard face. The feeling of rejection crept up her spine and was stretching its ugly roots all over her body and most importantly all over her already wounded heart.
“I’m gonna take a bath,” she said and walked past him.
He shrugged. “Before dinner?” He didn’t know why he was baiting her. She had turned tail and was leaving, obviously wounded. Maybe because he preferred pissed to hurt, it was easier to deal with.
“What do you care?” she snapped. “And by the way, Bane, if you had met me someplace different and I was just a random girl with no connection to your past you wouldn’t have noticed me either.”
That much was true, he mused. Somehow her anger – anger that even he could tell was fueled by pain – wasn’t any better. “I’m hungry.”
“Fine. Go fuck yourself,” she spit out and stalked out of the room, slamming the bathroom door loudly. Hopefully he’d choke on his stupid steak!
Leaning against the tiles, she pulled in some deep breaths to get control of the violent feelings raging inside of her. He’s not worth it, she told herself over and over until her hands weren’t shaking anymore. She walked over and turned the water on, adjusting the temperature and pouring enough bubble bath in the tub for at least three full baths.
Her gaze wandered to the door and she considered locking it, but what was the point?
Once the tub was full, she quickly slipped out of her clothes and sank into the water with a sigh. The warmth felt like an embrace. Something she had craved all day but had been denied.
Bane stalked around the kitchen, slamming pots and pans on the counters as he set about preparing dinner. After a while he forced himself to calm down and he worked in silence as he readied the steaks. He mentally went over every bit of information he’d collected about this situation while at the same time wondering what Valkyrie had gathered off of the senator’s yacht. He seriously hoped it was something of value because he was ready to get this finished and move on.
He opened the oven door and slid the steaks inside, checking the temperature on the broiler one more time before turning back and debating what kind of potatoes he wanted to go with his steak. Fried, he decided, just to be ornery. He collected a bag of the frozen potatoes from the freezer and then started a search of the cupboards to find a suitable vegetable. Dissatisfied he returned to the freezer and snatched a bag of broccoli.
He didn’t know why women had to be so fucking difficult, but it sure as hell drove home the fact he didn’t want one in his life on any kind of permanent basis.
Maria took her time with the bath, using a razor to get rid of nasty hairs although she had no clue why because obviously no one was interested.
For you, she reminded herself and went on to shampooing her hair and diving completely under the water to wash it out again. Maybe if she stayed in long enough he would just eat without her and she could get away with having dinner alone later.
So he was looking at this rationally? Fine. She’d do the same. She’d do what he said when there was danger and for the rest of their time together they’d just coexist.
He checked the steaks and turned them before turning his attention back to the fries. Certain they were fine he went back to the cheese sauce for the broccoli, making sure it was smooth and creamy. He drained the broccoli and set it aside, pulled the steaks out, and tossed a couple of frozen biscuits on the pan and slid it back in the oven. He made a half-hearted attempt to cover the second steak and tossed it on the counter before he finished putting his plate together.
Once everything was ready he grabbed a beer from the refrigerator and carried it along with his plate into the living room. He staked out a spot on the couch, turned the TV on and found something to watch. He really considered finding more porn and turning it up as loud as it would go, but why bother? The way his luck was going here lately she’d think it was an invitation. So he settled on an action flick and forced himself to watch it.
The sounds of heavy gunfire greeted her when she tiptoed into the bedroom with just a towel wrapped around her body. She pulled out more clothes belonging to the unknown woman, combed her wet hair and then went to the kitchen, making as little sound as possible.
The huge TV screen from the living room provided enough light to move around and see the rest of dinner on the counter. It was considerably less than hot by now and she felt a bit sorry because it really looked well made. In spite of his denial, he certainly knew how to cook.
Fixing herself a plate, she sat at the counter and ate alone while staring at the back of the couch and his head.
Bane controlled the urge to shift when he felt her staring holes in the back of his head. He refused to give in to the desire to turn around and look at her, let her know he knew she was watching him. He set his empty plate on the cushion next to him and belched loudly as he sat back, feet propped on the coffee table and his fingers laced together on his stomach.
Prick, she thought, annoyed, finishing her plate. She was about to leave when the news interrupted the movie, showing a video they had just gotten from a sailor who had accidentally filmed the explosion of her uncle’s yacht.
When her face was displayed and the reported started to speak about the tragic history of her family and how she had already lost everyone ten years ago to an explosion, she felt sick to her stomach.
Bane started to switch channels when he heard the telltale hitch in her breathing but he changed his mind and left it where it was. She had spent a lifetime being sheltered and now she had no one around to do that, no one to protect her from the world, and she needed to get used to the ugly reality of life sooner rather than later.
A picture of her parents appeared on the screen and she grabbed the counter tightly. How dare they use her family’s history to make an exclusive story?
“Tragedy has followed the Deluca family for decades,” the reporter on screen stated, his voice conveying false sympathy. “Gerald Deluca, a highly respected journalist for the Observer, suffered a heart attack that nearly took his life after losing his youngest son, FBI Agent Sam Deluca to a fatal shooting during a raid back in July of 2000. Just five years later his family was almost entirely wiped out after a gas leak caused an explosion during a wedding at the family home.”
Footage from the wedding flashed on screen for a few moments and Bane sat up when he caught sight of his younger self, a pissed off expression on his features.
“The Senator took on guardianship of his young niece, renowned FBI Agent Daniel Deluca’s daughter, upon the death of her parents. In spite of the loss of his family, Reginald Halverson continued to push forward with his career. There were rumors the good senator intended to announce his run for the presidency in the coming year.”
“Tragedy sells,” he muttered to himself and shook his head. He got to his feet and carried his plate into the kitchen. “Any idea where they got footage from that day?” To the best of his knowledge nothing like that had ever been revealed to have survived the explosion.
“I don’t know. It’s not one of mine.”
“No, yours were all still shots.” Where had the reporter gotten that video?
“I have a few low quality vids and more photos. You just never saw ‘em. Someone was there to set the bomb, right?”
“At some point, yeah.”
“Then maybe they took it.”
“It’s possible, but that suggests that whoever set the bomb off had to be there that day.”
“Maybe we can have a look at my videos. If so then the person might be on it.”
He ran a hand through his hair. “Where are they?”
“Uploaded on a server.”
He shook his head. “We’ll have to wait until your hacker friend gets here. If we don’t take the right precautions we’ll bring ‘em right to our door.”
“Yeah, Alex will be able to do it.” She slipped from the stool and carried her plate to the sink. “If there is someone from your Circle thing then maybe you or that other assassin will recognize him or her.”
“Maybe.” He shrugged and added his plate to the pile. “Depends on who it is. If it’s someone who’s inactive or dead we may not know them.”
“Too bad you don’t remember your family. We could exclude everyone if you did.”
“You assume no one in your family could’ve been involved.”
“No, what I mean is I can identify which people belong to my family, but I never got introduced to all the members of yours, so we won’t know if there’s anyone in the pics that don’t belong to you.”
“That’s true.” He rubbed his forehead as he considered that. “The files regarding my past have been scrubbed but maybe Whitman can dig somethin’ up. Val seems to think he’s good at what he does and if he’s impressed her he’d have to be.”
“Alex is one of the best.”
“He’d better be,” he muttered. There was a helluva lot riding on the abilities of a guy he didn’t know.
“I’m gonna go to bed,” Maria informed him when she couldn’t think of anything they could’ve overlooked so far. Once Alex arrived they could pick up the investigation, but until then they really had nothing in common to share.
He made a dismissive motion with his right hand, his mind otherwise occupied as he considered all the angles. He hated sitting on his hands, waiting for someone else to do something to get a job going.
She rolled her eyes at his lack of interest and walked down the hallway towards the bedroom. “I don’t think it’s necessary that we share a room since there are several in the cabin that’re unoccupied,” she called before she closed the door behind her. Jerk!
He snorted and dropped his head back to thump against the cabinet behind him. “That’s what you think, Blondie.”
Earth2Mama: That’s definitely something that could go either way but we’ll find out today what she’s feeling.
As promised Val will be checking in on their situation soon.
Roswelllostcause: Yeah, lol, Val has great timing, doesn’t she?

Oh boy... it would be great if looking at the footage & photos unlocks part of Bane/Michael's memories of that day.
I hope it does.
I'm for one glad that he refused Maria. Definitely not the right set of circumstances and she would have regretted it later. But, just how long will they both hold out? Hmmm...

Week after week you keep me on the edge of my seat. I guess I will have to wait 2 weeks for this next one! Great job!

The chemistery between Maria & Bane/michael is building. The tension between them grows and makes them skittish and on edge. Even more whith everything that's going on.
So the reunion is for one of these days, huh? Very curious how that will turn out.

Great part and you know what its said:
'Union fait la force' wich - means in englisch - 'united we stand, divided we fall'
And in this case, that's the truth even if they are both too wounded by the experiences they are going through than trying to fight together their ennemies who are in both of them interested... even if it is difficult to understand who is behind all of this!
At least, I feel it that way...
Thanks and have a great holliday week! EVE

Wow! I am happy ML met up with Alex and Val. I love that they will all be together. I hope Maria can forgive ML because she really needs a friend to sort her through all she's been feeling and going through. I feel really badly about her losing her uncle.
Poor Michael his people skills need lots of work. I wonder how long before he can't hold out with Maria anymore. I hope it doesn't take long for the sake of her self esteem.
Excellent parts. I hate missing out on account of RL but I love having lots of parts to read at once. I hope you both had a good vacation. I hope you begin another story now that TT is finished.
