The Usurper (AU M/L, K/I, Mi/M Mature) Ch 5. 9-19-08 (WIP)

Post by Evansgurl01 »

Title: The Usurper
Disclaimer: Not Mine!
Rating: Mature/Adult
Couples: M/L, K/I, Mi/M,
Summary: Liz Parker is the smallest of small town girls. Working as a maid at the Eclipse Hotel, Liz finds herself one day staring into the eyes of Emma Evans a woman who could’ve been her twin. Accused of stealing from her Liz is given an ultimatum. Either spend countless years in jail for theft or take Emma’s place in the Evans Mansion, as business tycoon, Maxwell Evans’ wife for a year.
Author’s Note: I know, I know I always start things and never finish ‘em. Well I just had to start this story. It’s been in my head for a while after watching a Spanish Soap opera called La Ursurpadora, which means The Usurper. The idea is the same but that’s the only similarity.

*~*~*~*~*~*

Prologue

*~*~*~*~*~~

“She has to know the truth Rosie.” Nancy Parker said hoarsely. Nancy Parker knew after tonight she would breath no more. The cancer inside her had gotten steadily worse over the past few months and had slowly taken her strength. She knew Elizabeth would be fine. She may only be sixteen but she was strong, always a fighter, her Lizzy.

“Are you sure Nancy? Whatever she doesn’t know won’t hurt her.” Rosie cajoled. Rosie sat at the corner of Nancy’s bed wringing her shaking hands. Nancy was her most trusted friend and seeing her like this, knowing she wouldn’t live to see another day was slowly killing her inside.

“Sh-she would never forgive me Rose. She must know.” Nancy weakly reached under her pillow and handed Rose an envelope. “Here. Give this to her. My soul will rest peacefully knowing she will soon find out what I’ve kept from her for so many years.”

Rose felt the tears slide down her cheeks as Nancy’s eyes fluttered shut and with one last shuddering breath she passed. Rose didn’t know how long she sat there crying with the letter held tightly in her hands when she heard the front door to the small apartment open.

She got up and turned to the door when Liz opened it softly. “Mom? Are you up?”

Liz looked at Rose whose cheeks were wet from tears then over at her mother who lay motionless on the bed. She didn’t realize she was shaking her head in denial as slow tears started coming down her face until Rose went over to her and gripped her in a tight hug.

“No….no….no. Rose please tell me she isn’t.” Liz cried out holding on to the woman she considered as a second mother for dear life.

“I’m so sorry sweetie. I’m so sorry.” Rose whispered as she rubbed her back soothingly.

Rose pulled back not bothering to wipe the tears away, knowing they would continue to fall. “She asked me to give you this.” Rose handed her the envelope.

Liz looked down at it before crushing it to her chest. She fell to her knees unable to handle the pain of losing her mother. She was now truly alone in the world. Rose fell to the floor with her and hugged her again. No. She wasn’t alone. She had Rose and everything was going to get better. Maybe in time the pain will go away.

Chapter 1

*~*~*~*~~*~*~~*~

Ten years later

“Lizzy! Get up sweetie you’re going to be late on your first day!” Liz groaned, slowly blinking open her eyes. She turned to look at the clock on her bedside table. Six thirty. Groaning again she got up slowly and made her way to the bathroom.

“Lizzy, you’re food will get cold if you don’t move those feet young lady.” Rose said tapping her foot on the ground with her hands on her hips. Liz slowly made her way to the small kitchen table. “You know breakfast is-”

“The most important meal of the day, I know Rosie.” Liz said yawning widely.

Rose laughed. “Oh, I just want you to have a good day at work Honey bear. I know how hard it’s going to be for you to work around those snooty, snobby, rich people.”

Liz smiled softly. “Oh, they’re probably not so bad Rosie. Some of them are probably really nice and money isn’t everything. I bet they’re just lonely.”

Rose shook her head. “You’re just too nice for your own good. Your kindness is admirable sweetie but some people are just plain mean. Imagine what we could do with just a quarter of what those snobs have. We could get out of this dump that’s for sure.” Rose said looking around their tiny apartment.

Liz sighed before taking one last sip of her orange juice and getting up. “Money isn’t everything Rosie.” Liz said wrapping an arm around the older woman. “We have each other. That’s all that matters.”

Rosie smiled, giving Liz a kiss on the cheek. “Go finish getting ready. You might really be late if you don’t hurry.”

Liz quickly dashed to her small room and put on her maid uniform. She stuck her socked feet into her well-worn white sneakers before getting up to look in the mirror. She tied her waist length brown hair into a ponytail and sighed. Opening the top drawer of her beaten dresser she pulled out a wooden box. Lifting the cover she looked down at the aging envelope. She had never opened it. All these years and she was still too afraid to look inside.

“Lizzie! It’s seven o’clock! The Eclipse opens at eight sweetie!” Rose called from the kitchen.

Shaking her head she put the envelope back into the box and pushed the drawer closed. One day. One day she will get the courage to open it.

*~~*~*~*~~*~*~*~

“Welcome back to The Eclipse Mrs. Evans.” Jack said, as he looked the delectable woman up and down. He remembered well her last visit to is hotel. Her smooth legs had felt wonderful wrapped around his waist.

Emma smiled flirtatiously, loving the attention she received from the handsome hotel owner. “Oh, I couldn’t help myself. It had been so long since I visited New Mexico. I missed the scenery.” She smiled wider looking at his well-built form.

Jack grinned. “And will your…husband be joining you on this trip?”

Emma shook her head pouting. “No, my husband is home taking care of the business and kids.”

“What kind of man leaves such a gorgeous woman to vacation alone?” Jack said shaking his head. “If there’s anything you need Mrs. Evans I’m here to help.”

“Oh, I am sure you will be of service to me soon Mr. Dontell.” Emma smiled.

“You know where my office is.” Jack said bowing slightly before departing.

Emma watched him walk away her eyes wondering to his ass before the bellhop appeared next to her ready to take her bags to her room. Emma smiled and followed the man up to her penthouse.

“Room 2135 ma’am.” The bell-hop said opening the door and setting her luggage in the corner of the huge room.

“Thank you.” She said tipping the man and quickly walking to her bathroom wanting to check her make-up before heading down to Jack’s office.

Retouching her lipstick she brushed out her shoulder length brown hair and smoothed out her burgundy tight fitting dress. God, how she wished she could just stay on vacation forever. She no longer had to pretend she was in love with her boring husband and his stupid kids. Why she thought marrying a man with kids was a good idea she would never know. The money must have blinded her. He had enough to keep ten generations of his family living without having to work. He was handsome too which was a plus but Emma was no longer interested. She had gotten him to marry her and keep her from poverty but now she was also rich. She had saved money into her own bank account and could easily find a wealthy man to give her everything she wanted.

Smiling to herself she blew her reflection a kiss before heading down to the lobby and towards the office.

*~*~*~*~*~*~~*~

“Okay, you’ll have the second floor today. Now remember you clean around everything and make up the bed. Make sure everything is in place before leaving the room. Vacuum the rug in the hallway before you start on the rooms “ The head maid explained to Liz.

Liz nodded. “No problem.”

“Alright, you are to start in room 2123 and make your way to 2135. This will probably take you all morning and well into the evening.”

“Okay.” Liz said before rolling her cart to the elevator and making her way up to the second floor.

At the end of the day faith is a funny thing. It turns up when you don't really expect it. It's like one day you realize that the fairy tale may be slightly different than you dreamed. The castle, well, it may not be a castle. And it's not so important happy ever after, just that it's happy right now. See once in a while, once in a blue moon, people will surprise you, and once in a while people may even take your breath away

*!*!*!*!!*!*!!*!*!!*

Chapter 2

*!*!*!*!*!*!*!!*!**!

“Oh! Right there!” Emma screamed as Jack pounded into her from behind.

Jack grunted harshly before pushing inside her one last time and exploding. Emma shuddered in her climax. They lay on top of his desk for a couple of minutes before Emma got up to get her clothes.

Jack watched as she bent forward to pick up her panties. His cock twitched at the sight of her. His eyes skimmed over her back stopping at the heart shaped beauty mark for a bit then continuing down to her ass. He was contemplating getting up and going for round two when she lifted her dress from one of his chairs and slipped it on.

Emma turned around smiling brightly. “So, where are you taking me tonight?”

Jack smiled back. “How would you like to be my date for a function I’m going to tonight?” he got up pulling her into his arms and kissing her neck. “There will be dancing, food….”

Emma pursed her lips before smiling. She was sure there would be rich business men attending and knew she’d be able to snag herself one before the night was over. “Oh, but I didn’t bring anything suitable to wear for a function.” Emma said pouting.

Jack kissed her pout. “Don’t worry baby. We’ll go shopping for some clothes.”

“And jewelry?” Emma asked running her hands down his chest.

“Whatever you like.” Jack said smiling.

Emma grinned. “Ok. I’m going to get ready.”

“How about I meet you at the lobby in an hour.” Jack said.

Emma nodded, kissing him soundly before leaving the office.

*~*~*~*~~*~

Liz pushed her heavy cart in front of her last and final room. 2135. She was exhausted and was eager to finish the room and get herself home. Knocking softly she waited for the door to be opened. After a short while she pushed the universal key card into the slot and let herself inside.

“Room service.” She called out.

Not getting an answer Liz began to tend to her duties. She started with the bed, changing the previous sheets and fixing on brand new ones. Taking the vacuum cleaner from her cart she connected it to the wall and began to clean the rug. With her back to the door and the noise from the vacuum, Liz didn’t hear or see the woman come in through the door.

Emma didn’t even spare the maid a glance before heading into the bathroom. The bellhop would be up with her shopping bags soon and she needed to get ready for the function. Dumping her clothes on the floor as she went Emma stepped into the shower.

Liz turned off the vacuum, finally hearing the shower running and seeing the clothes on the floor she realized the person staying in the room must have returned. Sighing she picked up the clothes and folded them neatly on the bed. Liz turned to wipe the mahogany dresser when there was a knock on the door.

“Room Service.” Liz heard from behind the door.

Liz walked over and opened the door to the bellhop. Well at least she thought it was. She couldn’t see his face from over the amounts of packages and boxes he was holding in his arms.

“Drop them on the bed.” Said a woman’s voice from behind Liz.

Liz stood behind the door keeping it open for the bellhop as he walked in and dropped the packages on the bed. Liz held the door open until the bellhop left. Seeing as the woman was busy looking through her packages Liz made her way into the bathroom to clean up.

Emma pulled out the long gold dress from the box and held it in front of her. She grinned. The dress was going to look wonderful on her. She remembered picking it out when she realized the price was seven thousand dollars. Laying the dress on the bed, Emma turned to one of the smaller bags and pulled out two jewelry boxes. She opened one smiling when the diamond necklaces glittered. She opened the smaller of box her smile widening when she looked at the matching diamond bracelet and earrings. Putting the jewelry down Emma pulled out her new lacy underwear from one of the bags and slipped it on. She then put on her gold dress and matching shoes. Emma decided to put her make upon before putting on her jewelry. Grabbing her make up bag she headed back into the bathroom.

Hearing the tapping of shoes Liz looked up from the counter she was wiping and gasped when her brown eyes met similar ones in the mirror. Liz watched the woman drop her make up bag on the floor spilling its contents. Liz slowly turned around, her eyes taking in the woman before her. They were identical! Apart from the difference in hairstyles and the fact that the woman was clearly wealthy, they were the same.

“Who are you?” the woman asked.

Though they may have looked alike, Liz realized, they didn’t sound alike. While Liz’s voice was more soft-spoken and timid, this woman’s voice was husky and commanding.

“I-I…” Liz stammered. “M-my name is Elizabeth. Elizabeth Parker.”

Emma stared at the shy woman in front of her. She couldn’t believe their resemblance. If Emma weren’t an only child she’d wonder if they were separated at birth.

“I’m Emma Evans.” Emma said smirking.

Liz opened her mouth to ask her where she was from when a man’s voice came from the bedroom.

“Baby? Are you ready?” Jack called out before heading towards the bathroom. When he looked inside his eyebrows shot into his hairline. “Holy shit.”

Emma turned and smiled brightly at Jack. “I’m almost ready.”

“You guys…are identical.” Jack said looking from Emma to Liz.

Though Liz had b=never met the owner of the hotel she was well aware of what he looked like. Stuttering a quiet apology she quickly made her way past them grabbed her cart and was out the door before either of them could say another word.

Emma stood staring at herself in the mirror but not really seeing her reflection. Her mind was working fast as an awesomely bad idea popped into her head.

Jack bent down to pick up Emma’s make up. “Get ready, we cant be late.” Jack said handing her the bag.

Emma walked over to the counter and started putting on her make up as she thought carefully about how she was to pull this off. Once she was done applying her lipstick she turned to Jack.

“How would you feel,” Emma said getting up and wrapping her arms around Jack. “If I stayed here for two months instead of two weeks?”

Jack bent to kiss her lips softly. “I’d say that would be wonderful but what about your husband? I think he’d realize you were missing after a while.”

Emma smiled. “What if I told you I’d be in two places at once.” She said raising her eyebrow.

Jack slowly smiled back. “What are you planning to do?”

Emma laughed. “How about you help me put on my jewelry and we’ll talk about it on our way to the function.”

*~*~*~~*~*~*~

Liz sat on the bus on her way home, her mind and thoughts jumbled. She couldn’t keep Emma out of her head. It was so strange to see someone so much like you but not. Well, they did say everyone had a twin somewhere right? She wondered where Emma was from; she had to be from somewhere rich like California or something. Liz was so lost in her thoughts she almost missed her stop. Liz dragged her tired feet to her rundown building and up to her apartment.

“I’m home Rosie.” Liz called making her way to her room to drop off her bag.

“I’m in the kitchen honey bear.” Rosie called back.

Liz sat herself on one of the kitchen chairs and rested her head in her hands.

“Long day?” Rosie asked rubbing Liz’s back.

Liz lifted her head and smiled tiredly. “Sort of.”

“How was it? What did you do?” Rosie asked as she put a plate of food in front of Liz.

Liz explained to Rosie how her day went careful to keep the part about meeting Emma to herself. She didn’t know why she felt like she needed to keep it a secret but she did. They finished their meals and when Liz went to wash the dishes Rosie shooed her away.

“Go shower and get to bed. I’ll do the dishes.”

Liz smiled. “Alright.” She kissed Rosie on the cheek and headed to the bathroom.

*~*~~*~*~*~

Emma opened her eyes slowly, taking a deep breath a smile slowly appeared on her face when last night came rushing back to her. On their way to the function Emma explained to Jack her plan. Elizabeth would be taking Emma’s place in the Evans household for a year. Emma free to do what she wished would travel the world until the year was up and take her place back with the Evans. Jack had agreed whole-heartedly with her plan, wanting to spend more time fucking her beautiful body.

Once they’d reached the function Jack had introduced her before leaving her to mingle with his associates. Emma drank from a flute of champagne while she watched everyone around her. She wondered which one of the men in suits was the richest.

“Hello, lovely lady.” A man said from behind her.

Emma turned around to face a handsome man in his late thirty’s. She smiled flirtatiously, knowing the man was loaded. If his thirty thousand dollar watch didn’t say it, the fact that she recognized the suit he wore and knew it cost him more than ten thousand dollars said it all.

“Hello.” Emma said lifting her hand.

The man took it brushing his lips over the back of it lightly. “And what is your name?”

“Emma. Emma Green.” She lied smoothly. She couldn’t very well tell him her real name and have him recognize it.

“Beautiful. I’m Jonathan Washington.” He said smiling. “So, are you here with your husband?”

Emma grinned. “No. I came to accompany Mr. Dontell. You may know him. He is the owner of The Eclipse Hotel.”

Jonathan nodded. “Jack, of course. And are you two…an item?”

Emma shook her head. “Oh no. Definitely not. We just get together from time to time.”

Jonathan stepped closer to Emma. “And how would you like to get with me form time to time.”

Emma smiled. “Sounds wonderful. How about you give me a call sometime?”

Jonathan took down Emma’s number. He then lifted her hand again and brushed his lips against it before walking away.

Emma got up from her bed and made her way to the bathroom. She had a lot of things to do today. Beginning with speaking to Elizabeth Parker.

Thank you all for your fb. I've written another chapter for you. Hope you enjoy it!

*!!*!**!*!*!*!*!

Chapter 3

*!*!**!*!*!!**!!*

“Elizabeth, Mr. Dontell would like to see you in his office. Do you know where it is?” the head maid asked Liz.

Liz’s eyes widened. Why in Gods name would he want to see her?

“Elizabeth?” Liz nodded before putting her broom back in her cart.

Liz walked slowly towards her boss’ office. Was he firing her? Well, she hadn’t done anything wrong…had she? Liz sorted through her thoughts wondering what she could have possibly done to get called into Mr. Dontell’s office. By the time Liz reached the door she was still unsure of why he wanted to see her. With a shaky hand Liz knocked softly on the door.

“Come in.” she heard Mr. Dontell’s muffled voice.

Liz turned the knob peeking her head inside. She let out a small gasp when she saw Emma sitting on Mr. Dontell’s desk.

“Well, come in Elizabeth.” Emma said.

Elizabeth bit her lip and made her way inside the office. She wrung her hands nervously.

“I bet you are curious as to why you are here Elizabeth.” Emma said getting up.

Liz couldn’t help admire the beautiful and expensive dress the woman wore. It was a deep shade of red that matched her lipstick perfectly.

“Yes, I don’t understand what I’ve done wrong.” Liz answered.

Emma smirked. “You’ve done nothing wrong sweetie. I asked Jack to call you into the office.”

Liz’s eyes darted to the man behind the desk, who was also smirking before going back to Emma’s. “Why would you want to see me?”

“Well, I have a proposition for you.” Emma smiled brightly. “You and I look very much alike right?”

Liz frowned, nodding slowly.

“Well, how would you like to live in a mansion, with a car, money, and whatever your little heart desired.”? Emma asked her eyes shining.

Liz shook her head. “I don’t understand.”

Emma sighed sitting down at the edge of Jack’s desk and crossing her legs. “I want you to take my place in my home for a year. I live with my husband and his family. I will provide you with money of course, clothes, and jewelry. Anything you think you may need to pull this off. Once the year is up, I will give you a hefty amount of money for your trouble…let’s say about five hundred thousand dollars. What do you say?”

Liz stared at Emma wide-eyed. Was she serious? Five hundred thousand dollars was a lot of money. She could take care of herself and Rosie that was for sure…but it was wrong. Liz was never one to lie and she would have to lie to not only Emma’s husband and family but to Rosie as well. No, she couldn’t do it.

Liz looked from Jack to Emma. “I’m sorry Mrs. Evans. But I can’t do that. It’s not right. If that was all you wished of me, I am going to go finish my duties.” With that Liz turned and left closing the door behind her.

“Damn it!” Emma snarled slamming her fist on the desk and narrowing her eyes at the closed door.

“What are you going to do now? She didn’t accept.” Jack said leaning back against his chair and putting his hands behind his head.

“She will accept. Even if I have to force her to do it.” Emma said a malicious smile forming on her face when she thought of a plan.

*~*~*~~*~*~

Liz made her way into the hallway bathroom her thoughts going to Emma’s proposition that morning. She couldn’t believe the woman’s audacity. Liz stopped her cart outside the bathroom door and pulled out her supplies. Liz started sweeping up the floor before moping it. She then cleared out all the trash bins and finally made her way to the counter. Liz started wiping down the marble swiftly when she spotted something glittering in the corner. Frowning Liz put down her rag and leaned over to pick up the shining object. She gasped when she realized it was a diamond bracelet. It was a little heavy and Liz knew it had to be really expensive. Someone must have left it by mistake. Liz was on the verge of putting it in her pocket so she could give it to security at the front desk when she bathroom door burst open.

“That woman officer! She stole my eight thousand dollar diamond bracelet!”

Liz’s eyes opened wide as saucers as she looked from Emma to the officer with the bracelet in her hand.

The officer quickly made his way to Liz taking the bracelet from her hand and grabbing her arm. “Let’s go ma’am. You’re coming with me.”

Liz shook her head. “B-but. I-I didn’t steal anything! I found it on the counter, I swear! I was going to give it to security. I wasn’t going to keep it!” Liz said trembling, her eyes already filling with tears.

“That’s what they all say. I’m taking you in,” the officer said starting to drag Liz away.

“Wait! I- Mrs. Evans, I didn’t steal anything. You know I didn’t! Tell him!” Liz pleaded with Emma who was smiling brightly.

“What in God’s name is going on here?” Jack asked coming into the bathroom.

“This woman was caught stealing in you establishment sir. An eight thousand dollar bracelet was taken from Mrs. Evans and we found this maid admiring the stolen item moments ago. She must have taken it from Mrs. Evans room.” The officer explained.

Liz turned her tear-streaked face to her boss. “No I didn’t! I wasn’t! I haven’t been near Mrs. Evans room today. I was assigned the first floor. I didn’t steal anything! I just found it, I was going to give it to security!”

Jack looked from the officer to Liz. “Officer…Traves,” Jack said reading the man’s badge. “Thank you for your fine job at catching this thief. She is my employee and I will deal with her accordingly.”

“Are you sure sir? We could lock her up for quite some time if Mrs. Evans chooses to press charges.” Officer Traves said.

Jack shook his head. “That won’t be necessary. If Mrs. Evans chooses to press charges, than I will be the first to contact you.”

The officer nodded and released Liz’s arm before walking out of the bathroom.

Liz couldn’t stop the tears that were sliding down her cheeks as she looked from Jack to Emma.

“Tut, tut, tut Elizabeth. How could you resort to stealing?” Emma said smiling as she circled Liz. “If you needed money so badly you should’ve just taken me up on my offer don’t you think?”

Liz crossed her arms over her stomach. “I didn’t steal anything. You know I didn’t.”

Emma stopped in front of Liz and gasped mockingly. “Are you saying that I planned all this? That I would ask the head maid what your schedule was. That I would plant my bracelet in the bathroom before you came in. That I would have Jack watch you through the cameras and have him inform me when you found the bracelet. Huh? Is that what your saying?” Emma asked before bursting into laughter.

Liz shook her head at the woman. “Why would you do this?”

Emma’s laughter abruptly stopped and she glared at Liz. “Because I always get what I want. Now here’s the deal sweetie, you either take my place. Usurping me in my home for a year…or I have you locked up for so long you wont remember what the sky looks like,” Emma smiled. “It’s your choice.”

Liz looked away from Emma. What was she going to do? If she did what this woman asked she’d have to live a lie for a year. Fool so many. Fool Rosie. Liz willed the tears to stop but they continued to slide down her cheeks. What would happen with Rosie while she was gone? Who would take care of her? What will Liz tell her?

“Come on Elizabeth. I don’t have all day. What do you say? My offer….or jail?” Emma asked raising her eyebrow.

If she went to jail who knew when she’d get out. She’d have to leave Rosie for a long time. If she did this…then she’d only leave Rosie for a year and she’d have more than enough to take care of her. She had no choice.

Liz slowly lifted her eyes to meet Emma’s. “I accept. I’ll take your place.” Liz whispered.

Thank you so much for your feed back and I totally agree that Emma is a bitch. Hope you guys are enjoying the story. Here's the next part!

*!*!!*!*!*!*!*!**!*!!*

Chapter 4

!**!!*!*!*!*!*!*!*!*!*

“Rosie? Can I talk to you for a minute?” Liz asked one evening.

It had been a couple of days since she’d agreed to Emma’s plan and was now mustering up the courage to lie to Rosie. She had come up with what she was going to say and practiced it in the mirror until she was sure she’d be able to convince her.

“What is it honey?” Rosie asked sitting next to Liz on their small battered couch.

“I have something important to tell you.” Liz said a smile on her face. “It’s going to change our lives forever.”

Rosie raised her eyebrow. “What is it?”

“I’ve been promoted!” Liz said excitedly.

“Promoted? But you’ve only just started.” Rosie said frowning.

“W-well I’ve been doing a wonderful job and my boss called me into his office and offered me a position in California, San Francisco to be exact. I’ll be starting in two weeks.” Liz said hoping she sounded convincing.

“California? They’re sending you all the way across the state?” Rosie said narrowing her eyes.

Liz nodded. “Yes. It’ll only be for a year while I train in business. Oh, please say you’re okay with this Rosie. He’s already given me a payment in advanced. I’ll leave you more than enough money, so you don’t have to worry while I’m gone.”

Rosie looked into Liz’s eyes for a while before grabbing her hand. “It’s okay Lizzie. I’m happy about your promotion.” She said smiling.

Liz felt tears well in her eyes. “Thank you. Once the year is over I’ll come right back to you.”

Rosie nodded. “Alright honey bear.”

*~*~~*~*~~

“Alright, the first thing we have to do is cut your hair.” Emma said walking around Liz. “Get you a completely new wardrobe. The poor, raggedy look doesn’t look good on me.”

Liz nodded. “Alright.” She said softly.

“Yeah, and you’re going to have to practice speaking louder. Stronger. More confident, like me.” Emma said smiling brightly. “Now, let’s get you to a salon then we can deal with your clothes.”

Once they reached the salon, people quickly surrounded Liz. Emma was barking out orders to them telling them exactly how she wanted Liz to look and how her make-up was to be done. When the woman who was doing Liz’s hair approached her with scissors Liz had to hold back her tears. She had never cut her hair in her life, wanting to be exactly like her mother. Nancy’s brown hair had reached to her waist just like Liz’s.
The hair stylist tied Liz’s hair in a ponytail and started snipping at her hair. Liz watched through blurred vision as the woman handed Liz her hair and continued to snip here and there.

“Oh, stop crying. Its just hair.” Emma said smiling. “You look better now anyway.”

They continued to work on Liz until finally the man that had been doing her make-up turned her to the mirror. Liz gasped when she saw the woman looking back at her in the mirror. Her eyes had a beautiful shade of dark purple shadow. Her cheeks were rosy in color and her lips were now a deep plum color. Her hair was cut in shoulder length layers and highlighted with honey streaks. Emma walked over and stood next to her. It was incredible. You couldn’t tell the difference.

Emma began to laugh loudly. “Perfect.”

The next week and a half passed by too quickly for Liz and soon it was the day before she had to go to California. She was sitting in Emma’s hotel room while Emma quizzed her on the family she was soon to meet.

“Alright, who lives in the house and what are they to you?” Emma asked.

“Maxwell is my husband, I have two step children, Alexis or Lexi who is three and Alexander or Xan who is six. My brother in law’s name is Michael and he has a wife named Maria. They don’t live in the house with us but they’re our neighbors. My sister in law’s name is Isabel and her husbands name is Kyle. Grandma Claudia is Maxwell’s grandmother.” Liz recited for what seemed to be the hundredth time.

Emma nodded. “What is the company name?”

“Evan’s enterprises.” Liz answered.

“Alright, and what is your address?”

“Um…seventy five mountain Spring Avenue.” Liz answered.

Emma frowned. “There can’t be any hesitation in your voice. And what did I tell you about speaking louder?”

Liz nodded though she knew she would never be able to pull of speaking like Emma. Maybe they won’t notice.

“Alright. We’ve practiced walking in heels so you’re fine. I told you the lay out of the mansion so you should have no trouble finding your way. As me you need to know that I love to drive and you should-“

“Um,” Liz started. “I-I don’t know how to drive.”

“Urgh! Great…well try to find a way around that I guess. We have drivers so it shouldn’t be hard.”

Liz got up from her chair wobbling slightly in the heels Emma had given her to practice walking in. She was still not used to them but after a couple of days she managed not to trip or fall.

“Well, if it’s alright I’ll go rest for a couple of hours before I leave in the morning.” Liz said turning towards the door. Emma had told her to stay in her hotel room that night so Liz could leave as if it were she.

“Oh and there is one more thing,” Emma said.

Liz turned to look at her. “Yes?”

“I expect you to keep your hands off my husband. Though you are usurping me, you will not take it that far. Are we clear?” Emma said raising her eyebrow.

Liz nodded. “Crystal.”

Emma smiled. “Good. Now get some rest Emma. The private jet will be at the airport early in the morning.”

Liz took a deep breath before heading outside to the pull out bed in the living room.

*~*~*~~*~*~*

Liz tried her hardest not to fidget while she followed the man carrying her luggage to the jet. She knew she had to walk like she owned the world as Emma had taught her to. Once they reached the jet the man put her luggage in a compartment, and helped her up the steps into the jet.

“There you go Mrs. Evans. Have a safe trip.” The man said smiling.

Liz smiled taking out some money and tipping him. “Thank you.”

Once the door was closed and Liz was safely buckled to her seat the pilot told her they’d be reaching San Francisco in about two hours. Liz bit her lip nervously going over the information Emma had given her and making sure she got it right.

“Oh please God. Please let me pull this off and not let them find out I’m not Emma.” Liz prayed quietly.

Sighing she sat back and closed her eyes thinking about the tearful goodbye she had with Rosie. It had been terrible to leave Rosie all alone in their apartment but at least she knew Rosie wouldn’t have to worry about money. Emma had given her a large sum of money to keep up appearances and Liz had given Rosie enough to last her the year and longer. Liz wished she could have brought Rosie along with her. It would have been so much easier for her.

Before Liz knew it the pilot was telling Liz they would be landing in a few minutes. Her heart beating wildly Liz got up from her seat when the jet stopped. A man opened the door and waited while Liz stepped off the aircraft.

“Hello, Mrs. Evans. Hope you had a wonderful vacation.” The man said smiling.

Liz smiled. “Thank you.”

The man led her to a black limo and opened the door for her. Liz got in looking inside the limo with wide eyes. She’d never been inside one before. Liz heard the man put her luggage in the trunk and walk over to the drivers seat.

Liz couldn’t keep her eyes still as he drove her through the streets of San Francisco. Oh it was a beautiful place. Liz watched curiously as the limo stopped in front of a large gate. The driver lowered his window and pushed some buttons on an intercom. The large gate opened and the limo drove inside. Liz looked around at the beautiful flowers they passed as they drove up the long drive way. The limo stopped on front of the large mansion and Liz couldn’t stop her mouth from hanging open. This was where she was going to live for a year? It was the most beautiful house she’d ever seen! The structure was made of stone bricks with a green roof. There was a beautiful fountain streaming water in front of the house and beautiful colored tulips grew around it. The front doors where mahogany and huge. The widows were also huge and painted white.

The driver opened Liz’s door startling her. Liz quickly got out wanting to see more of the beautiful place. Liz stood outside for a good long while just admiring the view when the driver cleared his throat holding up her heavy luggage.

“Um, madam. Do you wish to go or will you be going inside?”

Liz nodded. “Oh! I’m so sorry. Yes, I am going inside. Would you like me to help you with those? I know they’re heavy.”

The driver looked at her strangely before shaking his head. “Uh, no Mrs. Evans. That’s all right.”

Liz walked up to the mahogany doors and turned the knob slowly. She stepped inside holding in a gasp. Inside was even more beautiful than outside. The floors were made of red wood and shined brightly as if it had just been polished. A grand staircase with marble steps led to the upstairs rooms. A large crystal chandelier lit up the room the light bouncing off the floor.

“Welcome back Mrs. Evans.” A woman in a maid’s uniform said coming up to her. “Would you like your things put in your room?”

“Um, yes. Thank you.” Liz said smiling at her.

The woman didn’t smile back. She just took the luggage from the driver and made her way up the grand staircase. Liz frowned after her. For some reason Liz got the feeling that the woman didn’t like her. Liz was lost in thought when she heard something pattering and soon a little girl with curly blonde hair came running through one of the doors to Liz’s left.

“Mommy! You back!” Lexi said hugging Liz’s knees.

Liz’s eyes widened as she looked down at the little girl. Her heart jumped when she heard the word mommy being directed at her.

“What did I tell you Lexi?” A woman came through the same door Lexi had run out of. “Your mother doesn’t like to be bothered.”

Liz looked at the taller woman. Her face was devoid of make up and she wore thin-rimmed glasses. Her blonde hair was tied back in a tight bun. She wore a long black skirt and long sleeved black shirt that wasn’t form fitting at all. She sort of looked like a strict nun. Liz immediately knew this must have been Isabel. Emma had described her to Liz as a boring prude who wasn’t worth talking to.

Liz bent down and picked up Lexi in her arms. “Oh, it’s all right. I really don’t mind.”

She walked over to Isabel and smiled. “How are you Isabel?”

Isabel narrowed her eyes. “Terrible now that you’re back.” She said nastily.

Liz’s eyes widened at the hate in the woman’s eyes. What could have Emma possibly done to her?

“You should’ve stayed away permanently. Or better yet you should’ve gotten hit by a car and died out there. Unfortunately you know what they say, weeds never die.” Isabel said coldly.

Though Liz was unsure of what Emma did to Isabel she wasn’t going to let her talk that way in front of Lexi.

“Watch what you say Isabel. If you have a problem with me that’s fine but don’t say things like that in front of Lexi.” Liz said angrily.

Isabel rolled her eyes. “As if you are what happens to Lexi or not. Come to think of it. This is the first time I’ve even seen you hold her.”

Liz looked down at the little girl who was smiling brightly at her with big blue eyes. How could Emma not want to hold her and kiss her all the time? Liz jus met the little girl and was reluctant to put her down.

“Oh, Emma. You’re back.” Said a man’s voice from behind them. Liz turned around to see a man with sandy brown hair and green eyes walk towards them. She remembered Emma describing this man. Kyle.

He looked very happy to see her, which was a good sign to Liz. At least someone was happy. Kyle walked over to Liz and took her hand in his kissing the top of it. Liz felt like he lingered a little too long on her hand but let it go.

“Hello Kyle.” She said smiling politely.

“I’m happy to see you.” Kyle said looking her up and down.

Liz frowned not liking the way he was looking at her at all.

“Of course you are.” Isabel snarled.

Kyle rolled his eyes at his wife. “What now Isabel.”

“Don’t talk like you don’t know Kyle.” She said before looking hatefully at Liz.

“You’re overreacting as usual.” Kyle said.

Isabel shook her head before running up the stairs. Liz turned to Kyle who was leering at her.

“So, do you want to hang out later? Just me and you for old times sakes?” Kyle asked.

Liz didn’t know why but she felt like she never wanted to be alone with this man.

“No thank you.” Liz quickly made her way upstairs. She walked down the decorated hall not really sure where she was going.

“Mommy, do you wanna play dollies?” Lexi asked. “I know you say you is busy lots and lots but today you not busy wight?

Before Liz could answer a small voice came from a door behind them. “Don’t bother asking her Lexi. She never has time for us.”

Liz turned around and looked down at a small boy. Xan. He had short brown hair with ears that were a little to big protruding from his head. His eyes were a beautiful hazel and were focused on Lexi.

Liz walked over to the little boy. “Why would you say that Xan?”

Xan looked up at her. “It’s true. You never have time for us. You’re always too busy to care.”

Liz frowned. She didn’t know what to say to him. It was obvious Emma scarcely paid attention to the children. She knew she had to change that soon. Liz pt Lexi down on the ground and bent down to be at eye level with Xan.

“I’ll tell you what. Once I get settled in, we could all play a game together. How does that sound?” Liz asked.

“YAY!” Lexi said hopping up and down.

Xan looked at her then shrugged. “Whatever. Something will come up. You’ll see.”

Sighing Liz got up watching as Xan took Lexi’s hand and brought her into his room.

This was going to be a lot harder than she thought.

Thank you guys for all the feedback. I'm glad you're enjoying this story. This part is short but I promise to make the next chapter longer.

Chapter 5

*@*@@*@*@@**@

Liz walked down the hall of the mansion trying to remember which room Emma had said was hers. She knew it was next to a bathroom but she wasn’t exactly sure whether it was to the left or the right of it. Taking a chance Liz opened one of the doors. Peeking her head inside she noticed a large king sized canopy bed in the middle of the room. The bed was covered with what looked like silk navy blue sheets. There were two mahogany dressers on each side of the bed, with beautiful lamps on top. The rug was plush white and looked like one was going to step on a cloud. Liz briefly wondered whose room this belonged to. She knew it wasn’t Emma’s, who had told her; her room was pink and beige.

“I see you’re back from vacation,” a deep husky voice said from behind Liz making shivers run down her spine.

Liz had never had a reaction like that in her life to a man’s voice. Turning slowly Liz looked up into a pair of incredible amber eyes. The man’s hair was short and brown and didn’t hide at all his slightly large ears. He looked very handsome in his black Armani suit and Liz couldn’t help but notice how broad his shoulders were. She immediately saw the resemblance between him and Xan and knew that this was Max Evans.

“Emma? Did you hear me?” Max said raising his eyebrow.

Liz shook her head clearing it. “Um, yes. I-I did hear you.”

Max frowned. “You sound…different.”

Liz cleared her throat. “Oh, just tired I guess, you know how I hate to ride on that jet.” Liz answered trying to mimic Emma’s voice.

Max’s frowned deepened. “I thought you loved the jet.”

“Oh…well…” Damn! At this rate she wouldn’t last a day let alone an entire year, Liz thought angrily. “I don’t like it that much anymore. I’ve realized the flights drain me.”

“Whatever Emma. Michael and Maria are coming over for lunch. Will you be gracing us with your presence?” Max asked.

Liz stared at him for a while. She had a vague feeling that he was being sarcastic. Not wanting to miss an opportunity to meet the rest of the family she nodded.

“Fine.” Max said brushing past her and heading inside his room. “Meet us down at the gazebo in an hour.” He said before shutting the door in Liz’s face.

Liz didn’t know what kind of marriage Emma and Max had but it was obviously not a happy one. Max didn’t seem to want to be near her at all. Liz wondered why they married if Max didn’t have feelings for Emma. Biting her lip Liz walked passed Max’s room and the bathroom before reaching Emma’s room.

It was lovely, looking much like Max’s room only done in light pink and beige. Stepping inside Liz put her purse down on the bed and went to the closet. She felt dirty from the flight and wanted to shower and change before meeting with Max’s brother and his wife. Liz rifled through the closet looking for the clothes she and Emma had bought in Mexico. Though Liz knew she was supposed to be Emma, it didn’t mean she had to dress herself as revealing as the other woman did. She refused to wear such low-cut dresses. Pulling out a pink skirt that fell just above her knees and a white button up she placed both items on the bed. After searching for underwear and shoes Liz headed to the bathroom for a shower.

*!*!*!*!*!*!**!*

Max lay back on his bed deep in thought. How had he gotten into this? This sham of a marriage? He knew how, he had confused lust with love. Had been on the rebound after Rachel’s death and had fallen into the Emma’s trap. At first it had been great. They had great sex, partied, had fun…then Max realized that was all she was, fun. He couldn’t talk to her about how he felt or about things that bothered him. He never spoke to her about Rachel knowing she had a fit whenever someone mentioned her. Max knew Emma didn’t want anything to do with his kids, even though at first she had paid them attention. Lexi had just been born and Xan had been three when Max had gotten tangled with Emma. She would smile at them and let Xan sit on her lap. Max realized now that she never actually held them. Rachel had died and Max had suppressed the pain, opting to bury himself in work and going out at night. That’s how he’d met Emma one night and now didn’t know what to do.

Max knew Isabel hated her but she refused to tell him why. Michael could hardly stand the sight of her and Maria had no patience for her. They all thought he needed to find someone loving and caring. Someone who would love him for him not for his money or what he could get them. According to them he deserved someone who would love his kids as they’re own. Max sighed. He had given up on finding that person a while ago. He needed to be in a loveless marriage. After all when you killed your wife it’s the least you deserved.

*~*~*~~*~*

“So, now that you’re free to do what you wish for an entire year what are you going to do first?” Jack asked kissing down Emma’s body.

Emma sighed happily, a brilliant smile on her face as she sipped champagne from a glass. “Well, I’ll play with you for a month or two then see where things go from there.”

Emma made a mental note to give Jonathan a call. She’d have him wrapped around her finger in no time.

*~*~*~*~~*~

Liz finished her shower and got dressed. She put on light pink eye shadow and light pink lipstick before slipping into her shoes. Seeing as she had plenty of time before she had to meet Max, Liz decided to explore the huge house.

Liz walked down the halls peeking inside doors whenever she came across one. So far she’d found two more bathrooms, four bedrooms, a study, a library, and an office. Peeking into another room Liz stopped when she saw a woman laying on the bed sleeping. The woman looked to be about sixty or seventy. Her hair was dyed a beautiful shade of brown but looked very unkempt. She had a beautiful face though Liz noticed she had bags under her eyes. Liz realized this must have been Max’s grandmother. She watched the woman stir from her slumber and meet her eyes.

“Emma! You’re back from vacation!” grandma Claudia said, her speech slightly slurred.

Liz frowned and walked inside to stand by her bed. “Yes, I’m back. How are you grandma Claudia?”

“Great now that you’re here…listen,” grandma Claudia said licking her lips. “Did you bring me a present? You know, the kind I like?”

Liz shook her head. “I’m sorry grandma Claudia but I didn’t bring anyone anything.”

“Oh, that alright Emma. I know you’re the only one that loves me.” grandma Claudia said. “You’ll get me some rum from Max’s study won’t you? He hates me you know. Always hiding the vodka and rum from me. But not you Emma,” grandma Claudia smiled drunkenly at Liz. “You always get me what I need.”

Liz shook her head unable to believe her ears! Emma was feeding this woman’s obvious addiction. How could she do this? Grandma Claudia could die if she continued to drink.

“No, grandma. I’m not getting you any more alcohol. It’s not good for you.” Liz answered.

Grandma Claudia went red with anger. “You don’t love me! You hate me like the rest of these people! Get out! Out!”

Sighing Liz left the room, shutting the door behind her. Emma really messed up this family, Liz thought sadly.
