Chapter 31
The next weekend, Kyle drove up to Hudson in his new truck. He had saved his money, and finally got a car, which he needed badly. Now that Michael lived in Virginia, he had no ride up to Hudson. Michael had come to get him a few times, but it was such a hassle.
Immediately when he got to the school, he and Tess went up to Maria’s room. “Hey girl,” Maria said answering the door. “And Kyle,” she grinned hugging him tight.
“We just came up to hang out. There isn’t anything to do in my room,” Tess said flopping down on Maria’s bed.
“Cool,” Maria said laying back down on her bed. Tess cuddle with her and then Kyle cuddled with Tess as they watched TV.
“We are so weird,” Tess laughed.
“Why?” Kyle asked.
“Because all we do is cuddle and watch TV,” Tess giggled.
“Ummm, that would be because we are all Earth signs,” Maria informed them. Kyle rolled his eyes and Tess nodded.
They stayed that way until Michael got off work. “Come in,” Maria called when she heard his knock. She had learned to decipher his knock from everyone else’s. Her eyes lit up, as usual, when he walked into the room. “Hey baby,’ she said scooting over so that he could lay down on the bed too.
It was a tight fit but he moved in behind her and wrapped his arms around her. “So, what is that plan tonight?” he asked rubbing his nose in her hair.
“Katie is having a party. But we’ve got some time before the festivities start.” She giggled.
Tess and Kyle looked at each other and nodded. Michael and Maria definitely needed to be alone for a little while, and so did they. “Ok, we will see you guys at the party,” Tess said getting off the bed, Kyle following her.
Maria and Michael said goodbye, but their attention was on each other. “So, how was work?” Maria asked Michael, snuggling into him.
“Good, but it was long.” Michael said as he traced his fingers over the soft curves of her face. “Glad to be here,” he smiled.
Maria smiled back, “Michael, can I ask you something, and you promise you won’t be offended?” she asked.
Michael looked her in the eyes with confusion but said, “Yeah, you can ask me anything.”
“Have you ever had an STD test?” Maria asked. Michael’s eyes doubled. That seemed to come form out of nowhere.
“Yeah, I had one about 6 months ago,” he said. “Why?”
Maria smiled, realizing she was freeking him out. “And you havn’t been with anyone but me since then?”
“Just you, baby. Why?” Michael asked. He was worried. Was Maria sick?
“Well,” Maria said nervously. She never got nervous about sex, but the thing she had to ask him was something she had never discussed with anyone. “I’m on the pill, as you know, and I wanted to start making love to you without a condom.” She said quickly.
Michael breath a sigh of relief. “Oh, Well, yeah I’d like that too, if you are sure,” he said.
“I just want to feel you completely. I want to feel you come inside me. I’ve never had that with a boyfriend. I’ve never trusted anyone that much, but I want it with you,” Maria explained.
Michael smiled and pulled her even closer into him. “Mmmm, wanna start now?” he asked excitedly.
And for the first time in her life Maria shook her head. “Can we just lay here with each other.” Her own words shocked her. She loved fucking Michael, but at that moment she just wanted him to hold her. Talk to her.
“Of course, baby.” He said rolling on his back. Maria laid lightly on his chest. They stayed that way for hours, talking about life, love, the future and each other. Time passed quickly as they lay there with each other. It seemed like no time at all before Katie called Maria to tell her to get her ass downstairs immediately.
“Let’s go,” Maria said pulling her shirt off and putting on a sheer cotton shirt on in it’s place. Michael took her and and led her down to Katie’s room.
When they got there, they saw the party was going on in about 3 rooms, with about 25 people around in the three rooms. “Damn, who the hell are these people,” Michael laughed as they made their way into Katie’s room. She was already trashed.
“HEY BITCHES!” she yelled hugging them both and handing them a beer. Michael made his way to Katie’s bed and say down. Tess, Kyle, Kaley, and Sarah were already there and Maria and Michael spent most of their time talking to them.
As Maria started to get a little buzzed, she noticed Isabel and Courtney enter Katie’s room. “Yay!” she said with fake enthusiasm.
Kaley got up to kick them out, but Maria stopped her. “No, they are fine, ignore them,” Maria said.
Isabel and Courtney looked around the room. Isabel had onl brought Courtney because she begged. She really just wanted to be there so that Maria could see that she wasn’t a total bitch. Courtney spotted Maria and looked at her smugly with a grin playing across her face, and Isabel just rolled her eyes at Courtney. Why did she hate Maria so much? There was a time before Maria was with Michael that Courtney liked her, now it seemed she hated Maria with every fiber of her being.
Isabel smiled at both Maria and Michael, trying to silently apologize for her ignorance. Maria ignored her, and Michael scowled at her. This was going to be hard, but she was willing to wait for them to forgive her. She had been an idiot. She deserved their distaste. Courtney made her way into the room and sat on Katie’s bed, Isabel sat next to her.
Maria went on ignoring Isabel and drank her beer. She wanted to get trashed tonight, and she barely had a buzz. A drunk Kaley leaned over to her and said, “Hey let’s smoke.”
“Ok,” Maria said getting up. “Baby, you coming?” she asked Michael.
He shook his head. “No, I just smoked one a little while ago.” He said. But apparently everyone one else in the room needed a cigarette at that exact moment because all 7 r 8 people in the room got up to go outside. All of them, that is, but Courtney and Michael.
Maria bent down and kissed Michael lightly before leaving the room and walking out the balcony. That left Courtney in the room alone with Michael. She licked her lips as she looked at him. Michael sat on Kaley’s bed uncomfortable as Courtney seemed to move closer and closer to him. “What are you doing?” he asked.
“What do you mean, Michael?’ Courtney asked innocently, however her body language only made him more uncomfortable, as she moved closer to him. “You know, Michael, I’m confused.”
“About what?” Michael asked. He didn’t really care, but what the hell was her going to say.
“Well, Maria, for one. I just don’t see what you see in her.” Courtney said smugly.
“Well, I guess it is a good thing you don’t NEED to understand then,” Michael said, irritated. Who the hell did she think she was?
“I’m not trying to talk shit,” Courtney explained, “I’m just telling it like it is. Maria is not all that. Besides, she’s been around the block a time or two.” Courtney said moving even closer to Michael. She was inches away from Michael now.
“Look Courtney, I don’t need to talk to you about this,” he said starting to get up, but Courtney was quicker than he was. She immediately pounced on him and pushed him back on the bed.
“Let me show you what a real woman can do for you,” she hissed, holding him down, and before he could get his wits about him she pressed her lips to his, kissing him hard.
It lasted just a second before Katie and Kaley’s door swung open and Michael pushed Courtney off of him. There he saw Maria, Tess, Kyle, Katie, Kaley, and Isabel standing at the door. Maria’s eyes filled with tears as she shook her head in shock. Her heart was breaking into a million pieces at that very moment.
Michael shot off the bed immediately and made his way to her. “Baby…” he started but Maria shook her head and ran. She ran straight up to her room and slammed the door behind her, locking it. That was when the tears began to fall.
Back downstairs, Michael began to follow Maria. “No,” Kyle said angrily. “Let her go.” Michael looked at his friends helplessly.
“How could you?” Kaley snapped. “How could you do that to her?”
Courtney moved out of the room and grinned, “He just saw a real woman and went for it, you can’t really blame him.” He said before winking and walking down the stairs.
“Why don’t you go with you FRIEND,” Tess barked looking at Isabel.
“I swear to GOD I didn’t know,” Isabel said almost pleading. Now that she thought about it, she should have known that Courtney had something planned. She always talked about Michael, and she seemed to hate Maria. But she really had no idea, and she could kill Courtney. She knew Michael would have never seen anything in Courtney, and he certainly wouldn’t cheat on Maria with her.
“I swear I didn’t do anything!” Michael cried.
“Whatever,” Katie said flipping her hair at him. Everyone stormed back into her room, the party officially over.
“Fuck!” Michael yelled as the door was slammed in his face. He quickly stormed out of the building and drove back to his apartment, crying the whole way home.
Back in Maria’s room, she sat on the bed, notebook in hand, crying and writing a song. She couldn’t understand why this had happened. She finally gave her whole heart so someone, and then he cheated on her. With Courtney of all people?
Isabel walked slowly into Courtney’s room. “What the hell was that?” she huffed.
“Oh Common, tell me your arnt’ happy to see those two apart,” Courtney said, sure of herself.
“No, I’m not. I was wrong about Maria. She loves him, and you just fucked that up.” Isabel said. She was pissed. Courtney had just ruined her best friends only chance at happiness. She walked straight up to Courtney and slapped her hard across the face. “Stay the fuck away from me. And Maria and Michael.” She warned before she walked out of the room.
She made her way up the stairs next. She needed to talk to Maria. She knew Michael loved her and she needed Maria to understand that. She saw Kaley and Tess standing outside of maria room. They shot her a glare. “What are you doing here?” Kaley snapped.
“I…I know Michael didn’t cheat on her. Courtney planned the whole thing. I need to talk to her.” Isabel said.
“Well she isn’t talking to anyone. Least of all you,” Tess huffed and then returned to speaking into the door. “Maria, talk to us. Please.” There was not answere. Maria was in her own depressed world.

Chapter 32
Tess and Kaley finally convinced Maria to open the door at about 4:00am. Her eyes were puffy and she looked like she ahd been run over by a Mac Truck. “Maria, talk to us,” Kaley said leading her to the bed. She and Tess sat on either side of her, wrapping their arms around her.
“I hate him,” she cried. “Why? Why would he go to all that trouble to get me to trust him if he just wanted to fuck Courtney,” she asked no one in particular.
“Maria, do you really think he would do that?” Tess asked. She knew what she saw, but she still couldn’t belive it. Michael wasn’t like that, and he certainly didn’t seem like the time to risk true love for a roll in the sack with Courtney.
“I saw him, Tess.” Maria cried. “It’s typical. See, this is why I don’t let people in.” She said with more conviction as she wiped her face. “When you trust people, they let you down.”
Kaley sighed silently. Dammit, if Maria could just stop being o damn stubborn. “Look, we will stay with you tonight,” she said getting into bed.
“You don’t have to,” she said, “Kyle’s here, Tess. You don’t want to stay here. Besides, I’m fine. It’s for the best.” Maria said not betraying her inner sadness. “I was stupid to jump into this, and I just got my wake up call.”
Tess and Kaley frowned at her but continued to get into the bed. “Kyle went out,” Tess said. She didn’t want to tell Maria that he had gone over to Michael’s, but Maria wasn’t dumb, Tess could see the understanding in Maria’s eyes.
“Oh,” she said with a slight nod. “Ok, well I’m tired, so I’m gonna go to sleep,” Maria said quietly. She moved into bed with Tess and Kaley and laid there. She listened as their breath evened out and they fell asleep. She on the other hand couldn’t sleep. The image of Courtney’s body pasted to Michael’s was burned into her brain.
She kept going over the events of the evening in her head, over and over again. It made her sick. It made her angry. All that she had put into this relationship, all the trust she had mustered up, and all the issues she dealt with were all for nothing at this point. Why? She loved him, and he promised to love her back.
At the same time, all of this was so uncharacteristic for Michael. Even if he didn’t love her, he was upfront right? But she couldn’t help what she saw and how it made her feel.
Meanwhile, with Kyle and Michael…
“You know I didn’t do this!” Michael yelled as he ran a frustrated hand through his unruly hair. He paced the floor, trying desperately to keep back the tears that had been spilling all night.
“You’re right,” Kyle said, “Michael Guerin wouldn’t give up on his one true love for sex with some skank like Courtney. But the fact is that, what I saw was You kissing Courtney. And that is what Maria saw. You know the issue prone Maria. The one that trusts no man.” Kyle said looking at his friend.
At first, Kyle was very pissed off at Michael, but the more he thought about it, the more he realized that something about this whole situation was off. Michael wouldn’t cheat on Maria ever, but definatly not with Courtney. So he went to see him.
“I have to see her. I have to make this right,” Michael said pulling on his jacket.
“Kyle it is 5 in the morning. She is probably asleep. Besides, she was pretty upset. Maybe you should give her a little while.” Kyle said.
“No, Kyle. I shouldn’t have left. I love her, and I’m not letting her issues come in the way of our being together. I HAVE to see her,” Michael said grabbing his key. Kyle reluctantly followed Michael out the door and to his truck. He wasn’t sure this was a good idea, but he couldn’t do anything about it.
********
Michael banged on Maria’s door, hard. He ran his hands through his hair as he heard a rustling in the room. A groggy Maria opened the door, and when she saw him her eyes went wide as she began to shut the door in his face. “Maria, wait,” Michael said, “Just talk to me!”
“About WHAT, Michael?” Maria screamed, waking Kaley and Tess from their slumber on her bed. They immediately came to Maria’s side.
“Baby, please don’t do this,” Michael cried, nearly fallinf to his knees. “I didn’t kiss her. Please! Don’t shut me out!” Michael yelled.
“Shhh,” Tess said harshly. “You are going to wake up the whole building.”
“Stay out of this!” Michael shot back. He didn’t need Maria’s friends’ opinions on their relationship right now.
Tess looked at him in the eyes, glared and then walked out of the room. Kaley followed behind, shaking her head at Michael. “I have nothing to say to you.” Maria said coldly, never looking Michale in the eyes. If she looked at him, she would break.
“Maria, why don’t you stop being the victim here and listen to what the fuck I have to SAY, dammit!” Michael boomed. Maria finally looked up at him, shocked. Michael had never talked to her like that. EVER.
“Fuck this. I’m not going to stand here and listen to you yell at ME after you made out with that bitch! Get the fuck out!” Maria said, and she slammed the door in Michael’s face. He sighed heavily, knowing that he had sooooo made the situation worse. Why did he yell at her? He was mean, and rude, and angry, and he had taken all of that out on Maria. After all the abusive relationships he knew she ahd been in, he had let his emotions get the better of him.
Fuck, this sucked. He sat down outside of Maria’s door and thought, tears streaming down his face. This was a hopeless situation. Maria was never going to listen to him, and he was never going to get her back, and he would be alone. Again. Only this time, the women he lost, he actually loved with his whole heart.
He was torn from his thoughts as Isabel slowly walked toward him. “Michael,” she said quietly, as to not startle him.
“What do you want?” he nearly barked, only this time he was conscious of his volume.
“Michael, I know you are innocent. I didn’t know Courtney was…” she began but Michael stopped her.
“You know, I don’t really have time for this right now.” He said, “The Isabel I know would never do something like this. But then again the Isabel I knew would not let some strange mand in to attack my girlfriend. The only thing I’m concerned about right now is Maria. And right now she isn’t talking to me. So that is what I’m focusing on.” Michael informed her.
“I know, and I’m going to try,” Isabel said reaching for the door.
“She isn’t going to let YOU in!” Michael huffed.
Isabel turned the nob and saw that the door was unlocked. “Well, then it’s a good thing that I don’t need to get her to open up then,” she said before walking into Maria’s dark room. Michael watched on helplessly. He had no idea what was going to happen. He had no control, but he vowed then and there to work through his issues with Isabel if she could get Maria to talk to him again.

Chapter 33
“Michael, get the fuck out!” Maria yelled when she head the door open. She didn’t look up. She didn’t want to see him. She didn’t want to look at him. She just wanted to be alone.
“It’s not Michael,” Isabel said quietly as she moved further into the room, closing the door behind her.
“What do you want? Here to gloat?” Maria asked, teary eyes as she sat up in bed.
“Common Maria, give me a little credit,” Isabel said sitting next to her on the bed. When Maria didn’t push her off, she turned to her.
“Ummm, no, I don’t belive I need to give you any credit at all. You wanted Michael and me to fail, and look you got your wish. Only you were a little weak on the details, seeing as Michael cheated on me, not the other way around,” Maria spat.
“Maria, you don’t honestly thing Michael was cheating on you,” Isabel said rolling her eyes. She was not about to let Maria get away with what she knew she was doing.
“I saw him, Isabel. And so did you.” Maria said defiantly.
“Why don’t we talk about what this is really about,” Isabel said, running her fingers though her hair.
“And what is that, oh wise one?” Maria said rolling her eyes. Isabel’s attitude was about to make her scream.
“What you walked into tonight gave you exactly what you wanted.” Isabel said, sure of herself.
“Stop talking in riddles and tell me what the fuck you mean!” Maria yelled.
“Ok fine. When you walked into Courtney pushing herself onto Michael, it gave you a perfect out of this relationship,” Isabel said looking Maria dead in the eyes.
“So what you are saying is that I don’t love Michael, and I’m looking for an excuse to break up with him.” Maria said with a huff. ‘big surprise that you doubt my feelings for him.” She said almost under her breath.
“Look, I have no doubt in my mind that you love Michael. I was an idiot. I see that now. But that doesn’t change the fact that is scares the shit out of you,” Isabel said.
Maria looked at her silently. Ok, she might have had a point, but that didn’t change anything. “Maria, stop being so selfish!” Isabel finally said. She had never been one to hold back, and she wasn’t going to stop now that two of her friends were involved. Yes, Maria still was her friend as far as Isabel was concerned.
“Go to hell, Isabel.” Maria said, but her heart wasn’t in it. She was still thinking.
“No, this is important. Give Michael a little credit if you aren’t going to give me any. He loves you. He loves you with his whole heart, and Courtney is a cuniving bitch. It doesn’t take a rocket science to realize what the hell happened tonight.”
Maria felt tears stinging her eyes. Isabel was right. One hundred percent dead on. “But…” she started. She couldn’t get her words out before she burst into tears, sobbing into the palms of her hands. Isabel immediately wrapped her arms around Maria and held her tight.
“Maria, I know you love him. I know you don’t belive that he would cheat on you. Please, just talk to him. He’s outside. He’s waiting for you.”
“How can he forgive me?” Maria asked. “I actually thought he would cheat on me with Courtney!” she exclaimed.
“Just tell him the truth. Tell him you are scared. Tell him you love him. Tell him what youa re feeling, because in the end that is all that matters,” Isabel said.
Maria wiped her eyes and looked at Isabel. “Thank you,” she said.
“No need to thank me. I’m sorry, maria. I’m so sorry that I didn’t trust you, that I hurt you. I’m sorry for everything.” Isabel said with tears coming to her own eyes.
“Look, I’m not saying I’m over it, but I can forgive.” Maria said quietly.
Isabel, uncomfortable with the exchange of emotions got up off the bed. “Ok, well I think you might want to talk to Michael before he has a heart attack right outside your door.”
“Ok, can you send him in?” Maria asked with a slight smile.
Isabel smiled and nodded, walking to the door. When she got outside she looked down at Michael, who looked like he was on the verge of throwing up. “Maria will see you now,” she said trying to hide a smile on her face.
Michael’s head shot up to look at her. He coulnd’t belive it. What had Isabel said that made maria want to talk to him. Not even her close friends had gotten her to do that. But without a second thought he shot to his feet and entered the room before Maria had a chance to change her mind.
When he walked into her room and closed the door behind him, he saw his sitting on the bed, waiting for him. “Maria, I…” he started, but Maria stood up and placed her index finger on his lips to stop him.
“Wait, let me talk first,” she said in a much nicer tone than she had used only moments before. “Michael, I’m an idiot,” she said plopping down on the bed. Michael hesitantly sat down next to her, and remained silent waiting for her to continue.
“I know you could never cheat on me. Especially not with Courtney. It’s just. When I saw you two…together,” she said visibly shaking from the horrific thought, “I just…I don’t know. I guess I took that as an opportunity to get out.”
“Out of what, Maria?” Michael asked, scared to death of her answere.
“Out of this. This relationship. I think I’m in over my head. I love you. I love you so much it scares the shit out of me. And knowing that you love me back just as much only makes this harder. Now I know, when this relationship fails, there will be no way out of having me heart ripped out of my chest, and I’ve never let anyone get that close. Not my friends, not m family, no one.” Maria tried to explain.
“Who says this has to end, maria. We love each other right?” he asked. When Maria nodded he said, “And we are having fun together, right?” she nodded again. “then why are you planning our inevitable breakup, when we don’t even know if there will BE a break up. Baby, you’ve got to stop this. Just let it go. I’m not going anywhere. I love you too much. Even if we DID break up, which I find impossible to imagine at the point, I could never be without you in my life.” He said seriously. He lifted her head up to look at him. “I’m here forever.”
“I know. And I’ve told myself that a thousand times. I know you aren’t going to leave me. It was stupid for me to get so upset about this, but I’m just scared. I’m scared because I’m quickly losing myself in you. I’m scared because I feel like I need you. Like I’ll die if I’m not with you, and that I so not me, Michael. I’m not the dependant girlfriend.” She said in distress as she allowed Michael to pull her into his arms.
“Maria, you are the more independent woman I’ve ever met. You’re not dependant on me. You are in love.” He said with a smile. It was still hard for him to get used to the idea that Maria loved him just as much as he loved her. “Baby, don’t shut me out.” He said holding her close.
“You know, you are quickly turning me into a weepy bitch,” Maria chuckled wiping the tears from her eyes. She got back in bed and motioned for Michael to join her. “Will you hold me tonight?” she asked. It was the first time she had actually said something that cheesy, and she didn’t even care.
“Always,” Michael said stripping out of his clothes and getting into bed.
*******
The next day, Maria and Michael went to breakfast together, and when Maria saw Isabel sitting at a table alone, they joined her. “Morning Isabel,” Maria smiled. Isabel smiled back, happy to say that Maria had heeded her advice.
“Good morning, Maria. Morning Michael,” she said. And Suprisingly Michael smiled at her. It was the first time he had showed her a friendly sign since he and Maria got together.
“Look, Isabel. I wanted to say, that I forgive you. It will take a long tiem to get back where we were, but I’ll try,” Maria said.
“Ditto,” Michael said. It was all he could manage at the moment.
”I understand,” Isabel said. A smile played softly across her features. It was a beginning and a big one at that.
“So, what are you two doing for Thanksgiving?” Isabel asked, as she buttered her toast.
“Hanging around the campus I guess,” Maria said. She wasn’t going to fly home for Thanksgiving. She would rather die.
Michael looked up at her. “Well, I was thinking, Maria. I kinda wanted you to come home with me. You know, meet my family.” He said shyly.
Maria’s eyes doubled. Oh this was big. “Ummm, well, I mean…I want to meet them,’ was all she could muster. This could be bad. Very bad. What If they hated her? What if they told him Michael could do better? She knew it was the truth, what if they convinced him?
“You don’t have to,” Michael said quiety. He had pushed to far. It probably wasn’t the best time.
”No!” maria said, “I want to.” She said finally. Michael smiled and nodded as he dove back into his omlete.
“Oh shit,” Isabel said suddenly. “Thanksgiving is next week. I thought it was in two,” she said bitting her nails.
“What’s the big deal?” Michael asked.
“I just didn’t realize is all. I like to have a plan Michael. You know that,” she said. And her heart was fill with joy at the fact that she and Michael were already re-starting their famous banter.

Chapter 34
“You ready?” Michael asked Maria the Wednesday before Thanksgiving.
“Yeah, let me just check again,” she said rushing to get her bag ready. “We are coming back Sunday, right?”
“Yeah,” Michael said smiling at her. She was so nervous. He didn’t know why. It wasn’t like she had to be. She didn’t need to impress his family, and he was sure she wouldn’t. She had captured his heart, and that was all that mattered. He just hoped his family behaved.
“Ok, I think I’m ready,” she said pulling her duffle bag onto her shoulder.
“Ok, well let’s get Isabel and get on the road.” Michael said.
“Yeah,” Maria said looking back at her room one last time. They were going to give Isabel a ride to her car and then they were off. She, Michael, Isabel and Kyle were going to meet up later for dinner. It was nice to know that Maria had friends in Michael’s town. It would take some of the stress of the visit.
*********
“Baby, we are almost there,” Michael said, waking Maria up as they reached the town limits. Maria blinked and opened her eyes, sitting up straighter.
“Sorry, didn’t mean to fall asleep on you there,” she smiled.
“it’s fine, I know you are tired from last night,” Michael smirked.
Maria winked and placed her hand on Michael’s thigh, “It’s too bad we can’t have a repeat of that again tonight,” she said rubbing him the way she knew drove him crazy. As she almost reached the bulge in Michael’s pants, he placed his hand over hers and stopped her motions.
“You have to stop.” He growled. “I’m going to wreck the truck.”
Maria giggled and moved her hand away from him. “Yeah, I just want you so bad,” she said.
“Me too, baby. But my mom is old school. She isn’t going to let I stay in the same room.” He explained. Maria nodded her head. Her mom wouldn’t care. Maybe it was better that he had a mom that DID care.
Soon, they were in front of Michael’s house and he took her hand in his and kissed her knuckles. “Ok, lets go,” he said, not betraying his inner nervousness. Maria smiled and got out of the car, grabbing her bag as Michael got his and they walked up to the door hand in hand.
Michael gently walked into the house and called, “MOM! We’re here.”
Soon, a short, thin woman about 50 years old came out from the kitchen, “Michael?” she called before looking up. “Oh MICHAEL!” she said before rushing to her son and wrapping her arms around him.
“Hey mom,” Michael said untangling himself from his mother. “This is Maria,” he said introducing the two. He smiled at Maria with pride, and he noticed a slight flinching from his mother, but shrugged it off as she extended her hand to shake Maria.
“Hello, Maria,” she said coolly. None of which went unnoticed by Maria.
“You have a lovely home, Mrs. Guerin.” she said, looking around.
“Thank you,” Mrs. Guerin said with a slight smile. “You can call me, Cindy.” She said.
Maria smiled and nodded, and then stood there uncomfortably. Michael squeezed her hand and said, “So, where are we going to set Maria up?”
“Oh, the guest room upstairs,” Cindy said pointing up. There are fresh sheets on the bed. Michael nodded and lead Maria up to the room. Inside he closed to door and pulled her into an intense kiss.
“Mmm,” Maria moaned as she dropped her bag on the floor. “As much as I love this, we can’t.” she said backing up, “I’m pretty positive your mom hates me. The last thing I need is to be caught corrupting her son.” Maria laughed. Internally, she was a little upset by Cindy’s cool reaction to her, but she was just going to let it go.
“She doesn’t hate you,” Michael said rubbing her back. “She is just…well she is protective. Like Isabel. My mom only has me, and I’m already far away from her. To have another woman thrown in, it’s just hard for her. But she will love you. I know it.” Michael said. It was his other motley crew of family members he was really worried about. His 2 cousins and aunt that were coming for dinner tomorrow would probably give Maria a hard time. But he would be there, to protect her.
“Ok, well anyway, we need to be careful,” Maria smiled. Usually she wouldn’t care. She had had sex in many a man’s bed with his mother at home, or even in his own mother’s bed, but with Michael it was different. She wanted to impress his mother. She wanted to make Cindy like her, and trust her. To know that Maria’s love for her son was real.
“Alright,” Michael said pulling away from her. “Let’s get settled and then we can meet up with Isabel and Kyle.” Maria smiled and nodded as Michael left for his room.
**********
“So, you met Cindy Guerin?” Kyle asked with a chuckle, but when Michael smacked him on the back of the head, he sobered up. Michael through him a scowl, and Maria looked at them both confused.
Isabel did her best to explain. “You see, Mrs. Guerin is not a fan of Kyle, and she is not very kind to him.”
“Oh,” Maria said, not far from feelings Kyle’s pain. “Well, I’m sure she had her reasons,” she chuckled, winking at Kyle. He stuck his tongue out at her, while Michael and Isabel laughed at them.
“Anyway, what’s up tonight?” Isabel asked, picking at her fries.
“Hmm, I don’t know.” Michael said, “Not really looking forward to going home and being bored,” he almost pouted.
“Awww, is Michael sad that he isn’t getting laid tonight?” Kyle asked. Michael didn’t even need to smack him. Isabel took the liberty.
“Well, Michael,” Maria said. “We could always check out the sites in the town. The DESERTED sights.” She said with a wicked smirk.
“Well, I think this is our cue to leave,” Isabel said, not wanting to know what Maria had in mind for the rest of the evening. “We’ll see you tomorrow night after Family stuff, right?”
Michael nodded, “Yeah, later,” Michael said, his complete attention on Maria. Isabel pulled Kyle away from them, but Michael didn’t notice. He was wracking his brain for places to take Maria that were still romantic.
“So, what do you have in this town?” Maria asked, “That is nice and quite and away from everything.” Maria asked.
“Come with me,” Michael said taking her hand. They got back into the truck and Michael sped off down the road.
“Where are we going?” Maria asked.
“You’ll see,” Michael said smiling at her.
Maria huffed good-naturedly, but allowed him to surprise her. It was she who was surprised though, when they came up on the play-ground. “Michael?” she asked.
“It’s remote, quiet, and most of all, closed to the public,” Michael said, opening the door for Maria.
“Mmm,” Maria moaned as she leaned into him, kissing him hard. She slammed the door behind her, and wrapped her arms around his neck. He pulled her over to the swing-set and sat down. She straddled his legs on the swing and continued to kiss him.
“Maria…” He moaned into her hair as she kissed his neck, sucking on his pulse like it was her job.
“Mmm, Michael,” Maria moaned into his mouth as he moved it back to hers. “We need to move,” she said with great intensity. If this was going to go on, she couldn’t fuck him properly on a swing.
She gently got up off of his lap, took his hand and led him over to the jungle gym, where the climbed to the top. Maria had Michael lay down on the platform that lead to the slide and she was immediately all over him again. “Mmm, I want you,” she moaned, straddling him and rubbing her lace covered pussy against his jean-clad cock.
She quickly unbuckled his pants and unzipped them. She didn’t even bother with his shirt, knowing that it was too much trouble. She needed to be inside him at that very moment. “Michael, fuck me,” she groaned, pushing his pants and boxers down to his knees. She climbed back on top of him and, pushing her thong to the side, impaled herself on him.
Michael’s senses were in overload as Maria moved up and down on him with great force and intensity. He had to say, that as beautiful as Maria was making love to him completely naked, seeing her riding him, still fully clothed and in a public place nearly sent him into an orgasmic shock.
“Baby, that feels so good,” he groaned as the lace of her thong brushed the base of his cock. He dug his hands into her hips and helped her moved up and down on him, as he could tell Maria was in such a state of complete lust at that time she was barely even conscious.
“Fuck, Michael.” She moaned loudly as she grabbed onto his shoulders to steady herself, never skipping a beat as she fucked him harder and faster.
“Come for me, Maria,” Michael nearly growled. HE was close and he wanted her to come with him. He reached down and gently flicked her clit and her walls automatically clamped down around him.
“FUCK YEAH, MICHAEL!!!!!!!!!” she screamed as she came hard. Her motioned stopped as she tried to catcher her breath and Michael thrust into her a couple more times before he came too, deep inside her.
“MARIA, BABY!” he yelled at the top of his lungs, not caring if the whole world heard him. He loved this woman. She was his soul.
Maria was now laying lightly on Michael, him still sheathed in her. Finally, she came back to reality and moved off of him, fixing her underwear and helping him get re-dressed before she laid next to him. “I love when you come inside me,” she said with a smile. He was the fist guy she ever let do that, and it felt so amazing. She never knew it could make the sex even hotter.
“Mmmm, baby, you keep talking like that and we are never going to leave this playground,” Michael said kissing her temple.
“Promise?” Maria said with a giggle, and Michael attacked her once again.
********
“You guys are back late,” Cindy said as Maria and Michael walked through the door at 11:30pm. Late? This wasn’t late, Maria thought.
“Well, we got a little tied up with Isabel and Kyle,” Michael said without skipping a beat. Maria smiled at him. Did she just see perfect Mr. Guerin lying to his mother?
“Ok, well I’m going to bed. Don’t stay up too late,” Cindy said without so much a regarding Maria’s presence.
When Cindy was gone, Maria breathed a sigh of relief. Something about that woman wouldn’t let her relax. “Come on, we better go to bed too,” Michael said kissing her sweetly on the lips. “It’s going to be a long day tomorrow,” he said.
“Why do I NOT like the sound of that,” Maria asked with a smirk.
Michael chuckled. “It won’t be that bad. But when my cousins hit on you and my Aunt is rude to you, please promise me that you will still love me.” Michael said only half-serious.
“I promise. I will still love you. But is makes me so much happier to know that it isn’t just your mother that hates me on principal.” Maria said, only half serious.
Michael rolled his eyes and followed Maria up to her room. “Nighty night,” baby,” he said at the door.
“Night,” Maria said, then she leaned in a whispered, “I’ll be thinking about you tonight.” Then she winked and let him, and his hard on go to his room, alone.
TBC…

Chapter 35
Maria woke up the next day, and stretched in her bed. “Mmmm,” she moaned feeling her muscles stretch. She climbed out of bed and grabbed her toothbrush before going out into the hall and down to the bathroom. On the way, she ran into Michael, fully dressed and in a rush.
“There you are, sleepy head,” he said kissing her on the lips, lightly.
“Wait, what time is it?” Maria asked, panicked.
“About 12:30. Why?” Michael asked, confused.
“You let me sleep until 12:30!?!?! Oh god!” she cried.
“What? What’s the matter. Aunt Laura and Billy, Matt, and Kevin just got here a few minutes ago.” Michael said.
“Michael, now I look like I can’t wake up on time!” Maria said. As if it wasn’t hard enough to deal with his mother, now she looked like a lazy ass.
“Baby, it’s fine. Just get dressed and I’ll see you downstairs,” Michael said with a smile. Maria smiled back at him, and nodded. If he wasn’t worried, she wasn’t going to worry.
Michael went downstairs and Maria finished getting ready. 20 minutes later she skipped down the stairs where she saw Michael and his three cousins sitting on the couch watching TV. “Hey, baby,” Michael said getting up and pulling Maria into a hug.
“Hey, so what are you guys doing?” she asked. New people didn’t usually make her uncomfortable, but this was different. Michael’s family intimidated her for some reason.
“Just getting ready to watch the game. Mom and Aunt Laura are still cooking a little but, we should be eating in about an hour.” Michael said. “Oh,” he continued shaking his head, “This is Matt, Billy, and Kevin. They are my cousins,” he said, “Unfortunately,” he added with a grin.
“Nice to meet you,” Maria said with a smile. Matt, Billy, and Kevin eyed Maria up and down.
“Well, damn Guerin.” Matt said. “You know how to pick ‘em,” he laughed. Maria smiled uncomfortably.
“Shut up,” Michael said, seriously.
“Man, they don’t grow ‘em like that around here,” Kevin said licking his lips. Maria was getting the distinct impression that these guys were assholes. Drooling over her like that in front of Michael was just plain rude.
“Guys, I’m warning you,” Michael said, and before Billy could make his own comments, they shut up, seeing that Michael was starting to really get pissed.
Maria smiled uncomfortably and then sat on the couch, next to Michael. She didn’t want to sit anywhere near his cousins. They freaked her out. “So who is playing?” Maria asked as Michael flung his arm over her shoulder.
“Cowboys and Colts.” Michael said.
“Alright. Go Payton!” Maria said, excitedly.
“You mean, she likes sports too?” Billy said. “Mike, you better pinch yourself to make sure you aren’t dreaming.” Michael elbowed him in the stomach and he shut up.
“Michael, is Maria up?” Cindy’s voice called from the kitchen.
“Yeah, mom, she is up.” Michael said.
“Send her in here,” Cindy laughed. Maria looked at Michael, scared, but got up and went to the kitchen. Man, would she have rather been on the couch watching TV with Michael. Cindy was scary.
When she entered the kitchen she saw Cindy, in an apron, moving about the kitchen along with another women, a little younger than Michael’s mother, and much plumper. They seemed to be having a great time, thought Maria couldn’t explain it. Cooking an good time were antonyms in her thesaurus.
“Maria,” Cindy said with a smile, “Why don’t you help us in the kitchen while the boys watch TV.” He said. Maria wanted to scream that this wasn’t the 1950’s but she just smiled and nodded.
“Did you have trouble sleeping last night?” Aunt Laura asked.
“Oh no, not at all,” Maria said, busying herself with chopping veggies.
“Oh, well I just figured you had, since you woke up so late,” she said with a condescending tone.
Maria just grinned and smiled. She wanted to smack the smug look off her face, but she was being polite. Damn, Michael was lucky she loved him. Why would he bring her here if he knew his family wasn’t going to like her?
Maria lightly talked with Cindy and Laura as they finished dinner, and the two women continued to be less than warm to her. Cindy actually said at one point, “Well, in the South, we just do things a little differently, I guess.” When Maria told her a very little bit about her friends back home.
2 hours later, dinner was ready, and Maria was all too willing to be done with the torture of cooking. She went back into the living room and sat next to Michael. “You know I’m going to kill you, right?” she whispered in his ear.
“I’m sorry,” he whispered back, then he leaned in and kissed her lightly on the lips, causing her to feel a little better. None of this went unnoticed by the family, most of all Cindy.
“Ok, let’s eat,” Cindy said clapping her hands together. Everyone sat down at the table and she said, “Let’s say grace. Maria, would you like to?” she asked.
Maria looked at Michael for help, “Well, ummm, I don’t really…I mean I’m not…” she started.
Michael quickly jumped to her defense. “Maria doesn’t believe in organized religion, mom,” he said shooting his mom a look. He knew that he had told his mother this already.
“Oh,” she said as if she hadn’t known, “Well, Billy will you do the honors?” she asked sweetly. Maria wanted to gag.
“Dear Lord, thank you for being with us today, for this wonderful food, and for placing us in a good Christian home. Thank you for the morals and values that you instill in this house. And thank you for our wonderful family. In Jesus’ name. Amen.” Billy prayed duitifully.
As he prayed Maria bowed her head politely, but couldn’t help but be personally offended. Somehow she knew that whole thing was aimed at her. “Thank you, son.” Laura said with a smile, and thus the meal began.
As they passed the food around, Maria didn’t put much on her plate. It wasn’t that she didn’t like the food, it was that her stomach was in knots. Every time Laura, Cindy or the boys sked her a question, she seemed to be digging a deeper hole for herself. But she was Maria DeLuca, she wasn’t going to change who she was.
“So, Maria. What are you in school for?” Cindy asked.
“Well, I’m a double Major. Political Science and Music.” Maria said. “I’ll probably go to Law School after undergrad and then a Conservatory after that.” Maria said with a smile. She could handle THIS conversation.
“And would you want to TEACH music?” Laura asked, dishing out a hefty helping of mashed potatoes.
“Oh no,” Maria laughed. Michael smiled at her in pride as she spoke. “I don’t have the patience for children. Or teaching for that matter. I’ll either be a lawyer or musician. Maybe both.” She chuckled lightly.
“Well, children are blessings,” Cindy said curtly before dropping the subject. Michael shot his mother a glare, but continued to hold Maria’s hand under the table.
“So, how did you and Michael meet?” Billy asked, getting bored with school talk.
“Isabel is a friend of mine at Hudson and Michael came down to see her, and we just hit it off,” Maria said looking at Michael and thinking about their first few days together.
“Oh, ISABEL,” Cindy said, her face breaking into a smile. “How is she? Now THERE is a girl who knows where she is going,” she said with nod of the head. Laura agreed, and the boys didn’t seem to care anymore.
Maria looked at Mrs. Guerin astonished. The woman actually insulted her to her face, comparing her to Isabel. If she only knew. “Excuse me,” Maria said getting up from the table and placing her napkin over her plate.
“Baby, wait,” Michael said helplessly as she got up from the table.
Maria turned around for a second and said, “I’ve tried Michael. I listened to your mother condescend me, and…and I’ve looked past it, because I love you. But I can’t take it anymore Michael.” She looked at Cindy, who seemed beyond surprised as her outburst. “I’m not going to sit her and be mocked and hated.” She said, not letting the tears fall from her eyes until she got into the guest room and shut the door behind her.
Why did they hate her? It was obvious now that they did. What had she done? She slid down the wall and sat on the floor next to the door. It wasn’t long before she heard Michael shouting. She cracked the door to hear what they were saying.
“What is your problem?” Michael boomed, standing up at the table.
“Honey, she isn’t right for you. I know you don’t want to see it. I mean I’m sure she offers you cheep thrills, but you can’t have anything long term with a girl like that,” Cindy said sure of herself.
Laura and the boys just watched in mild amusement as Michael sighed in disbelief. “Cheep thrills? Mom, I don’t even think I WANT to know what you mean by that. The point is that I love her. I LOVE her! Don’t you hear me? She is the best thing to happen to me, and you are just making her doubtful about us!” Michael said. He was so sure that this little Thanksgiving trip could mark then end for him and Maria, and if that happened, he would be lost.
“Michael, I’m your mother, and as your mother it is my job to protect you. Protect you for girls like that. She’s a good time girl. She isn’t a mother, and she isn’t a wife.” Cindy stressed.
“First of all, WHO is getting married? And who is starting a family? And how do you know if she is wife material or not. She is 21! Just because she doesn’t want to be a mother and wife now doesn’t mean she never will. She is still getting her life together. Just like I am.” Michael said. “Mom, please don’t do this. Please don’t take your Southern Belle frustrations out on Maria.”
Cindy just glared defiantly at her son, and Michael turned to walk up the stairs, “I’m going to check on Maria. I hope to god you haven’t made her run away.” He said taking the steps two at a time to Maria’s room.
She moved out of the way of the door when he walked up to it and pushed it open. “Maria, I’m sorry.” He said honestly as he wrapped his arms around her.
Maria wiped her tears and looked up at him. “Why did you bring me here?”
“I didn’t know my mom was going to be like this. I guess I should have. But I’m just so proud of you. I love you, and I wanted my mom to meet you. I’m sorry she hurt you, but you know that nothing she thinks will change what I feel for you.” Michael said holding her tighter.
Maria got up off the floor with his help and he led her over to the bed, where they both sat down. “I know,” Maria said, smiling at him. “And I’m honored that you would want to share your family with me. But I can’t stay here. I love you, but I also have some self respect. I can’t stay here. You’re mom hates me and if I’m being completely honest, I don’t really like her either.” Maria said.
“I understand,” Michael said with a nod. “You want to go back to Hudson.”
“Yeah, I’ll get a bus.” Maria said getting up and beginning to get her stuff together.
“Wait, I’ll get my stuff and we can both go back,” Michael said getting up.
“No,” Maria said smiling at him. “Stay here. Be with your family. I’ll go back and I’ll see you on Sunday,” Maria said pecking him on the lips.
“Mmmm, but I’ll miss you,” Michael said deepening the kiss.
“I know, but you’ve got your hand.” Maria giggled.
“You’re bad,” Michael said.
“Don’t I know it.” Maria laughed.

Chapter 36
After Michael saw Maria off, he stormed back into his house. "Mom!" he yelled as he re-entered the house.
"Yes honey," she replied sweetly as she entered the foyer. She smiled at her son, pleased that she had gotten Maria to leave. Now she had him alone and she could make him see that he was not ment to be with that girl.
"We are talking," Michael said forcefully. "We can do that with Aunt Laura and the guys here, or you can make them leave, but one way or another we are going to talk about this." he said glaring at her.
"Michael, this isn't really the time," she said taken aback by her son's forceful tone. It didn't make her like Maria any more. Michael had yelled at her 2 times now in one day.
"No, now is the time!" he yelled, following her into the living room. "I guess we are going to do this with an audience," he said with a snide grin.
"Michael, i'm still your mother." Cindy said firmly, "Show me some respect."
Michael backed off a bit, but still stood strong. "Yes, i realize that. YOu are my mother, and i appriciate you and what you have done for me, but this is important to me. You just made the girl of my dreams run for the hills becuase you have issues with me getting close to anyone." Michael siad. He knew that his mother's issues with Maria were more about jealosy than her not being right for him. His mother knew that Maria was special and she hated it.
"Michael, that isn't true. But why can't you be with someone from around here. A girl from the south, with good parents and values," she said, like a broken record.
"OH MY GOD MOM!" Michael bellowed in frustration. "How many times do i have to tell you that that isn't even waht i want. Maria and i have a lot in common. We have common interests. We want the same things, and we are young!" he said. "But that isn't even the point. YOu are mad becuase you think she is taking my away from you." he countered. "BUt teh fact is you are pushing me away."
"Don't be rediculous," Cindy said, "YOu are just blinded by this girl. This girl from and exotic place to you. The new will wear off and then what are you going to do?" Cindy asked.
"It doesn't even matter. I love her. What happens will happen. BUt i love her, and i'm going to be with her. You can be with me, or you can give up on me, but if you really love me, you will wnat me to be happy. YOu dont have to like Maria, but you DO have to accept her as the woman in my life, becuase she is. And she will be for a long time if i have any say in the matter." Michael said.
Cindy just scowled at her son. How had everything gotten so far out of her control. She still had one card to play. "YOu know, i'm funding this lifestyle in Hudson. I could take my money out of the school at anytime." she said.
Michael's shoulders sagged, fearing this would happen. "If that's what you feel you need to do, fine. I lived paycheck to paycheck here, i could do it there too, but i wnat this mom. I need you if i'm going to live my dreams. But if you want to take your money out of my education, that is your perogotive," he said.
He gave his mom one last look before saying, "Look, I should probably just leave. I'd like to talk to you about this, but until you can be resonable, we dont ahve anything to talk about. You can call me anytime," he said. He didn't even look at his other family members before he went upstairs and began to repack.
***********
"Thank you so much, Kyle," Maria said as they got to Hudson.
"Not a problem. I told you that woman was nuts," he said with a laugh. Maria was really upset when she called him and asked him to drive her back, and he was happy to leave his dysfunctional family.
"So, are you going to drive back, or do you want to stay here?" Maria asked. Honestly she wanted him to stay. No one was on campus and she didn't really want to be alone.
Kyle smiled at her. He didn't want to go home, and he didn't want to leave Maria alone. "Sure, i'll stay here," he said. Maria smiled back at him and he helped her with her bag.
Once in her room, Maria flipped on teh light and ploped on the bed. "Uggghhhh!" she groaned pulling her shoes off. Kyle kicked his off as well and sat next to her on the bed. "If i never go back to your hometown it will be too soon," she laughed
"YOu and me both," Kyle replied with a sigh. "Just think i've got family there." he said raising his eyebrow.
"Yeah, trust me, i can deeply relate. The only reason i go to Roswell is to see Zan and Alex." Maria said with a sigh. "Looks like we've got something in common."
"Hooray for the fucked up family crew!" Kyle said giving Maria a high five. She giggled and slapped his hand, feeling better already. "SO, how about we just pop in a Comedy and get a good night sleep. No thinking about our families, or anyone else's families," he said with a chuckle.
"Deal," Maria smiled. "Let me go get changed. Pick out a movie," she said motioning to her blockbuster wall.
"You don't happen to have any, um, guy's clothes in here do you?" he asked hopefully. "Tess has some of my clothes but her room is locked."
Maria smiled and pulled a pair of boxers and a tee-shirt of Michael's out of her clean clothes basket. "Here you go," she said throwing them to him as she walked out the door with her own PJs.
Kyle was dressed and reclining on the bed with the remote when she got back to the room. "You girls take forever to get dressed," he laughed. Maria rolled her eyes at him. "So i decided it was a Dodgeball night," he said with a smile.
"Yay!" Maria said getting under the covers. Kyle pressed play and they began to watch.
About halfway through the movie, Maria turned to Kyle. "Do you think i did the right thing?" she asked, not really able to concentrait on the movie completely.
Kyle sighed and turned to her. "Yes, Maria. You did the right thing. You dont deserve to be treated like that by anyone."
"But do you think Michael..." she started, but Kyle stopped her.
"Michael loves you. That's all that matters," Kyle said with a smile. "His mother is goign to realize that one day. I just hope it isn't too late, becuase when it comes down to it, in a battle between you and Cindy, you are going to win with michael everytime." Kyle said. And he meant it. He knew that Cindy made a huge mistake in trying to break down Maria.
"Thank you, Kyle." Maria said with a warm smile. She hugged him lightly and turned her attention back to the movie.
She fell asleep about 20 minutes later and Kyle followed close behind, both tired from the events of the week.

Chapter 37
Maria woke up the next morning to a light knock on her door. Kyle was still dead to the world. She smiled at him and rolled out of bed to get the door. She wondered who that could be, since no one was on campus.
She opened the door to see Michael Guerin standing in front of her. The shock quickly left her face as she smiled and pulled him into her arms. “Baby, what are you doing here? I thought you were with your family.” She said, excitedly. She was happy to see him. At least his mother hadn’t talked him out of seeing her again.
“You know I’d rather be here,” Michael said squeezing her tightly. He pulled away from her and she moved out of the door way to allow him room to come inside. He eyes the moving person on the bed, and cocked his eyebrow when he saw Kyle laying there.
Maria’s mouth fell open and she hurried to explain. “Oh, so Kyle stayed here because I didn’t want to be alone and it was really too late to make him drive all the way back by himself, and…” she started, but Michael stopped her by kissing her deeply on the lips.
“Baby, chill,” he said with a laugh. “I don’t care. It’s Kyle. And to tell the truth, I’m glad he stayed. That way you weren’t here alone.”
Maria smiled at Michael. He was so amazing. A situation that would have sent her into a rage, he understood and didn’t let get to him. She wished she could trust him the way he so obviously trusted her. Damn to parental issues. “Well, it’s still early. Want to climb in bed and take a little nap?” Maria asked sweetly.
Michael lightly chuckled and then shook his head. “No, I’m up, but if you want to go back to bed, I can go out and get something to eat.” He offered.
Maria shook her head back. “Nah, let’s you and I go out. Leave sleeping beauty here to get some rest.” She smiled. Michael nodded and headed for the door as Maria jotted a little note for Kyle in case he woke up. Then she looped her arm in Michael’s and followed him out the door.
*******
Kyle woke up not long after maria and Michael left and looked at the note next to his head on Maria’s pillow. He smiled as he read it:
Kyle,
Michael’s back. We went out to breakfast and I decided to let you sleep. I’ll bring you back something.
Sweet Dreams,
Maria.
Kyle’s smile grew larger as he placed the not next to Maria’s bed and laid back down, sniffing the aroma that was uniquely Maria. Yeah, Michael was one lucky fucker. That girl was amazing.
*******
“So, are you going to tell me what happened with your mom, or are we going to sit here and pretend everything is ok?” Maria asked, taking a sip of her water as they waited for their breakfast to come.
Michael grinned at Maria. He never could avoid a subject with her. “OK, well, what do you wnt to know?” he asked.
“How did she let you out of her grasp long enough to come back?” Maria asked, a little bite in her voice.
Michael cleared his throat and answered, “I just told her that I was leaving.” He said. “I love my mother. And I appreciate her very much, but she can’t control my life. I’m 22 years old.” Michael said.
Maria chuckled, “Hey, slow down there. You don’t have to rationalize with me. I understand. I actually thought about calling my mom and thanking her for staying out of my life.” Maria laughed. She placed her hand over Michael’s and gave it a squeeze.
“I told her I loved you. She doesn’t like it, but you need to know it doesn’t have anything to do with you. My mom just wants me to be her little momma’s boy forever. She doesn’t like you because she knows that you have become more important to me than her.” Michael explained.
Maria smiled and began to talk but was interrupted by the food coming. After the waitress left she turned back to Michael, “I love you too, Michael. But I don’t want to be the reason you and your mom don’t speak. That’s too much pressure for me.”
Michael sighed, “It’s not all about you, Maria. There is so much. This has been a long time coming. My mom will get over it. And if she doesn’t it is her loss because I won’t let her control me anymore. Whether it is you, or my art, I don’t want to give up anything anymore.” Michael said.
Maria smiled at Michael with pride. He had grown so much since they had first met. “Well, let’s eat.” She said, officially ending the conversation.
********
“Here you go,” Maria said to Kyle as she handed him his breakfast.
“Thanks, you didn’t have to,” Kyle said.
“Forget it,” Maria said plopping down on the bed next to him. Michael moved in next to her and Kyle dug into his food. He scarfed it down in record time, and Maria chuckled as she watched him drink his orange juice in .2 seconds. “Hungry?”
“A little,” Kyle smiled back at her. Michael pulled Maria into him and kissed her on the lips, causing Kyle to scoot further away from the couple. Maria pulled away from Michael and gave him a confused look. Kyle was there. It was sort of rude to make out with each other when he was sitting on the bed with them.
Michael sighed and nodded, knowing the reason for Maria’s hesitation. After a few minutes of silence, Kyle cleared his throat and said, “Well, I better get going.”
“Going back home?” Michael asked.
“Yeah, might as well.” Kyle answered.
Knowing how much Kyle hated his family, Michael said, ‘Why don’t you stay at my apartment for a few days? Tess will be back tomorrow. That way you can hang out with her.” Maria smiled, liking that idea. Tess missed Kyle. She had already told her 100 times.
“Ok, got some keys? I need a shower.” Kyle said. “And I’ve got to call my mom and tell her I’ll be a few days with the car.” He grinned.
Michael tossed Kyle the keys to his apartment and said, “Alright. I’ll call you later.” Michael said, just wanting Kyle to leave. He loved his friend dearly, but Maria smelled so good and he wanted to be alone with her.
“Alright,” Kyle said. “Later, you guys.” He smiled on his way out. Michael locked the door behind Kyle and turned back to Maria.
“’You are bad,” maria said, unable to be really mad at Michael.
“What?” Michael asked innocently.
“That was rude. Kyle didn’t need a live porno.” She giggled. “Though I really wouldn’t mind if he watched.” She said, hopping to get a rise out of Michael.
It worked and she almost fell off the bed in laughter when she saw his bottom lips jut out in a pout as he said, “Better not.”
“Oh come here,” Maria said pulled Michael down on top of her. Her lips found his neck as she sucked his pulse point.
“Mmm, baby,” he groaned as he pushed his erection deeper into her thigh. “I want you so much,” he moaned as she gyrated against him.
“Then take me,” Maria moaned already removing his shirt. He in turn pulled off his tanktop, freeing her breasts as she never put a bra on when they went to breakfast. He took one of her pert nipples into his mouth. “Fuck yes,” Maria moaned.
Her hands went instinctively to his jeans as she unbuckled him and pulled his pants down. She pulled him out of his jeans and boxers and then quickly kicked her own shorts off before climbing on top of him and impailing herself on Michael’s rock hard cock.
“Baby, what’s the rush?” he moaned out through gritted teeth.
“I just need you,” she moaned throwing her head back as she begin to ride him hard and fast. “Oh fuck,” she groaned, leaning back further and grabbing her ankles. “mmmm,” she moaned.
“Fuck Maria, that feels good,” Michael early growled as his fingers dug into her fast gyrating hips. He could tell he was leaving marks on her and it only urged him on even more. “So wet,” he moaned as she picked up her pace to near hysteria.
“Fuck! Oh God, YES!” Maria screamed as she came hard around Michael, still pumping him but with less intensity.
Michael came close behind her, spilling his seed deep within her. When Maria felt him come, she collapsed on top of him, letting her body revel in the orgasm ripping through her system. “damn,” she said with a breathless chuckle. “It’s been too long.”
“It was like 3 days,” Michael laughed.
“Hey, I like my sex. A lot.” Maria said. “Now how about that nap.”

Chapter 38
“Maria what are you doing here?!?” Tess asked as she saw Maria, Michael and Kyle sitting in Maria’s room the next day. “I thought you weren’t coming back until Sunday night,” she continued, sitting down next to Kyle, who laughed at his girlfriend’s total disregard for him.
“Oh it’s a very long story,” Maria said with a sigh. “A very long story I would have told you, if your phone had been on,” Maria laughed.
“Yeah, I know. My family wanted all family time,” Tess rolled her eyes. “So I’ve got time now, what happened,” she asked looked at the three of them.
Michael sighed and leaned back on the bed. “My mom was not so friendly.” He said, still feeling bad about the whole situation.
“Oh Maria,” Tess said sympathetically as Kyle pulled her closer to him. “I’m sorry.”
“It’s ok. Nothing I can do about it now.” Maria said, brushing it off. The whole situation still bothered her, but there was no use worrying about it now. “She hates me, but at least Michael doesn’t,” she laughed making a joke of the situation. Typical defense mechanism for Maria DeLuca.
“Well, I wouldn’t worry about that,” Tess said smiling at Michael. If there was one thing about Michael, it was that Maria was his world. “Well, at least that gives us a day and half to reek havoc on the campus and Roanoke before the rest of the school gets back!” Tess said excitedly as she realized that Maria and Michael found the entire subject of Thanksgiving unnerving.
“Wanna go out tonight?” Maria asked, getting up off the bed and heading to her closet to see if she had anything to wear.
“YAY!” Tess said excitedly. “Let’s go to that club. The one that we all went to toward the beginning of the year.”
Michael and Kyle looked at each other warily, but nodded, wanting to please their girlfriends. Besides, it wasn’t as if there was anything else to do on campus. Besides, seeing Tess and Maria get all dressed up and dance, seemed like worthy viewing material.
“Well, I guess I better get back to the apartment and get ready if we are going out,” Michael said, standing up and stretching his legs. Kyle followed suit, getting his jacket as they headed out the door.
“Ok, we will be ready about 7:30,” Maria said, “Want us to meet you at your apartment?”
“Yeah,” Michael said leaning down to kiss Maria lightly on the lips. Kyle did the same and then they left.
Tess turned to Maria and said, “Alright, I’ll be in my room. Come down when you are ready.” Maria nodded and Tess skipped out of the room. Maria sighed and turned back to her closet, trying to figure out what she was going to wear to make Michael as well as everyone else’s head turn.
***********
“Michael’s going to lose it when he sees you,” Tess giggled as they walked up to Michael’s door.
Maria smiled with satisfaction and unlocked her boyfriends apartment, stepping inside. “Michael!” she called when she didn’t see him. Michael moved quickly into the living room, Kyle close behind. They looked amazing. Kyle had poured himself into a pair of tight jeans and a crisp blue button down.
Michael had on Black slacks and a pale yellow polo. They were both freshly showered and shaved. But the real attention in the room was on Tess and Maria. The boys stopped dead in their tracks looking at both of them.
“Wow,” Kyle said, first. Tess had on a micro-mini blue jean skirt and a tight white tank top. Her hair hung in loose curls around her face and he make-up was flawless. Maria was wearing a studded leather skirt, with a ripped up white wife beater and about 1000 studded necklaces and bracelets.
“See something you like?” Maria joked wit a wink.
“You guys look amazing,” Michael said pulled Maria to him with an animalistic growl.
“Nope, you will mess up my make up,” Maria smile before Michael could drop his lips onto hers. “Ok, let’s go,” Maria said taking Michael by the hand.
‘Who is driving?” Kyle asked.
“I will,” Tess offered, having the only SUV in the group. The four of them pilled in and sped off down to road to the club.
When they got there, Tess and Maria led the boys to a booth in the corner. “What do you want to drink?” Kyle asked Tess.
“Bay Breeze,” Tess answered with a smile and a kiss on the lips.
Michael looked at Maria and she answered his silent question, “Gin and Tonic.” The boys disappeared to the bar to get the girls drinks. “So, we going to dance tonight, or hang out here?” Maria asked, laying her jacket next to her in the booth.
“In this outfit. Oh we are dancing. Just have to get Kyle and Michael to join us,” She laughed, with a gleam in her eyes. Maria smiled a bright smile at her, more than ready to cut up the dance floor.
Soon the boys were back with the drinks and the girls sipped with quickly. “What’s the hurry, baby?’ Michael asked with a laugh.
“We are going to dance!” Maria cooed, slamming her drink glass down on the table. “Alright get up, boys,” she taunted, and both of them shook their heads no adamantly.
“Oh come on!” Tess whined, jutting her bottom lip out. “Please!”
“Nope,” Kyle said firmly.
“Fine we will dance by ourselves,” Maria said with a nod of the head. She took Tess by the hand and they paraded to the dance floor that was becoming increasingly packed with sweaty, sexy dancers.
Once in the center of the floor, Maria and Tess began bumping and grinding with each other, having the time of their lives. Maria needed this. She hadn’t had a chance to cut loose for quite a while.
Michael and Kyle kept a close watch on their girls, feeling the unnatural need to join them. Not that they wanted to dance, but they were the hottest girls on the floor, and the guys around them were definitely noticing. “Well, I guess we are dancing,” Kyle sighed getting up from his seat. Michael nodded and followed him reluctantly to the girls on the dance floor.
“It’s fucking hot,” Maria called to Tess over the music as they danced together.
“Tell me about it,” Tess giggled. Then suddenly they both felt strong arms wrap around them. Maria was about to turn around and give whichever guy was feeling her up and piece of her mind. But when she turned and saw that it was Michael moving close to her she smiled brightly and pulled his head down to her’s locking him in a passionate kiss.
She looked over and saw Tess and Kyle dancing closely and smiled at her friend before turning back to Michael. “So, what changed your mind?” maria asked throwing her arms around Michael’s neck.
“Oh, you know you are irresistible in that outfit,” Michael joked back.
“True,” Maria admitted with a shrug, but the two of them were pulled out of their happy-go lucky moment when someone flipped Maria around in Michael’s arms.
Maria was took shocked to put her words together as she stared at Billy, the bartender from the beginning of the year. “So, you’ve finally come back,” he said with a drunken smirk.
“Who is this guy?” Michael asked standing protectively behind Maria, and looking at the man in front of them warily.
Maria got her voice back and turned up to look at Michael. “No one,” she said trying to turn back around to Michael, but Billy caught her arm and stopped her. “Got off me,” she bit out pulled her arm out of his grasp.
Michael immediately stepped into action, pulling Maria behind him and Kyle and Tess were at his side in a second. “Hey, what is your problem, man,” Michael asked, gruffly.
“This is between me and that little bitch,” Billy answered angrily.
“Dude, watch who you are calling names,” Kyle said, in full battle mode.
“Come on guys, let’s just go,” Maria said taking Michael by the hand.
“No, you owe me an explanation.” Billy said, crossing his arms over his chest.
“For what?” Maria asked incredulously.
“Oh I don’t know. For fucking me, then giving me a phony number. Never calling me. Not even telling my your full name,” Billy said as if it was obvious why he was made.
“It was a one night stand. Get over it,” Maria said rolling her eyes.
Michael watched Maria stand up for herself and couldn’t help but feel strange. She didn’t need him to fight her battles. She could fight her own.
“No, no that’s is just what girls say. There is no way that you didn’t want another date. So what is your problem.” Billy said sure of himself.
“God, how does you’re ego fit in the same room with you,” Maria sighed. “Look, I was looking to get laid. I did, and it wasn’t that good, and I didn’t want you to call me, because I didn’t really have any desire to see you again. Now get out of my way!” Maria said pushing past him, her friends behind her, but Billy caught up and twirled her around wrenching her wrist away from her.
“So you’re just a fucking…” he started, but he words were cut off when Michael pulled him away from Maria, and soon a bouncer approached them.
“We have a problem here?” the bouncer asked.
“No, we were just leaving,” Tess said taking Maria’s hand and leading them out of the club. The three of them looked at Maria worried, and she just laughed.
“I’m fine. Come on, the guy has the strength of a 5 year old.” She smiled. “What do you say we just go to a bar and sit and drink. Clubs in Hudson don’t seem to agree with me,” she laughed.
“Ok, lets go,” Michael said letting it go. No need to play over protective boyfriend just to piss her off. But he was more concerned that he let on.

Chapter 39
“So you want to what?” Michael asked Maria 2 weeks later as she was packing to go home for Christmas.
“I want to go to your apartment, stay for the full 2 weeks of Christmas break and sell my plane ticket.” Maria said seriously as she folder her clothes.
Michael smiled at her and took the shirt out of her hand and pulled her into him. “You have to go home,” He said kissing her on the cheek. “Everything will be ok. You can hang out with Alex and Zan and I’ll be there for New Years, and everything will be fine. You don’t even have to talk to your mom that much.” Michael said, trying to ease Maria’s mind.
“Ugghhh!” Maria sighed plopping down on the bed. “I know. And I miss my friends, but I just don’t want to deal with all of that family bull-shit!”
“I know. But it’s 2 weeks. And the last week I’ll be there so if anyone starts anything with you, I’ll end it,” he said seriously. He knew that he would protect Maria from anything, including her family.
“Ok,” Maria said, caving. She really did want to see Alex and Zan, and she was pretty positive that they would let her crash at their apartment. All she had to so was get through Christmas Eve Night, Christmas morning, and the New Year’s Eve Party. Those were her only obligations, technically.
“So hurry up, you need to be at the airport in 2 hours and you aren’t done packing.” Michael chuckled.
“Oh I’m almost done. And that gives us plenty of time to get one more round in,” Maria grinned wrapping her arms around his waist.
“Ah Ah Ah. Nope,” Michael said wriggling out of her grip. “No more putting off packing. When you are finished, we will talk about another round,” he said, kissing her cheek and then turning her around and back to her work.
Maria sighed, but knew he was right, and finished packing in record time. After she zipped her duffle bag, she turned back around to Michael and slipping her arms through his, she said in her sweetest voice. “Now, will you fuck me?” she asked.
Michael looked at the fire in her eyes and nearly growled as he moved her to the bed. “Ok, but we only have time to do this once,” he said as he easily slipped her shirt off her head.
“I know, but then we will have to wait over a week.” She said between kisses. She tore his shirt away from him and placed hungry kisses down his chest. “Mmm, god I want you,” she moaned as she pulled his pants down his legs, his boxer quickly following.
“Ditto,” Michael moaned as he fiddled with pulled Maria’s thong down her long legs. He moved up her body once they were both nude, and fel his cock brush against the wet fold of her pussy. “Mmm,” he moaned as he took himself in hand and guided himself into her tight warm sheath.
“Fuck yeah,” Maria moaned angling her hips so that Michael entered her deeper and deeper with each thrust. She gripped his ass tighter pulling, willing him inside her. She couldn’t get enough. Sex was addictive with him. Even more than it had ever been before. She didn’t know how she got by without fucking him for so long.
“Maria,” Michael moaned as she gripped him tighter and flexed her in inner pussy muscles. “MMMM,” he growled thrusting faster and faster.
Then and idea popped into Maria’s head. She didn’t know why she’d never do it to him before, but soon, she found her hand reaching lower on his ass, in between his ass cheeks and over the puckered whole of his anus.
“Oh shit,” Michael groaned, bucking sharply into her. “What are you doing?” he asked looked at her wide-eyed.
“Trust me?” Maria asked with hitched breath.
“Always,” Michael answered.
Maria leaned up and kissed Michael passionately as he continued to fuck her and she gently messaged his asshole. “God, that feels good,” Michael admitted and Maria delved further pushing a finger into his ass and she listened as his breath quickened and he growled obscenities.
Maria located Michael’s prostate and gently flicked her finger over it. “Fuck me, SHIT!” Michael moaned, bucking wildly into her, and as Maria felt his cock pulse inside her she let go and came hard around him sceaming his name.
Michael followed closely behind coming harder than he ever had in his life. “Maria, fuck!” he screamed and then collapsed on top of her, panting for his life.
Finally, he rolled over and pulled Maria into him. “How did you know to do that?” he asked, mesmerized that after all the sex they had had, Maria still found ways to surprise him.
“Most guys like it,” Maria giggled, knowing that Michael hadn’t been with girls who knew about the sexual liberation movement, and that men could in fact like anal play and be completely heterosexual.
“Damn,” was all Michael could say. Then, gather his wits, he looked at the clock and said. “Well, it’s about time to go. Better get dressed.”
Maria sighed and nodded. “Yeah, lets go,” she said glumly.
***********
“Fuck,” Maria said under her breath as she spotted her mother at the airport. She thought Alex was going to pick her up. He must had told her mom the flight number. Oh that boy was going to get it.
“RIA!!!!!!” her mother nearly screamed as she spotted her. Maria wanted to bury her head in her hands as her mother, dressed in some god-awful outfit ran to her.
“Hi mom,” Maria said shifting the bag on her shoulder.
“Hi mom,” her mother mocked. “That’s all you can say after 4 months. You didn’t even come home for thanksgiving Maria.” Her mother scolded.
“I know, mother,” Maria answered, fighting the urge to roll her eyes.
“Well, come on, Jack is out in the car.” Amy DeLuca said, grabbing Maria’s bag off her shoulder, without even asking.
“Jack?” Maria asked, confused.
“Oh you’ll love him. He’s great.” Amy said.
“What happened to Jim?” Maria asked.
“Oh Maria, let’s not dig up ancient history,” her mother answered exasperated.
“Fine, just drop me at Alex and Zan’s apartment.” Maria said, following her mother outside.
“Why can’t you just stay at your own house.” Her mother huffed exasperatedly. “You know, you only come home a couple of times a year, and all you want to do is stay with your friends. It’s weird, maria. Most people miss their mothers.” Her mother said loading her back into the trunk.
Maria moved into the back seat and took note of the red neck her mother was shacking up with at the moment. ‘Most people’s mothers aren’t certifiable’ she silently answered her mother.
“Look, mom. I said I would come home for Christmas, and do the Christmas thing. That doesn’t mean I need to stay at home.” Maria answered, not wanting to go into this for the 4000th time.
“The only reason you want to go over there is to sleep around with those two boys,” Amy said with a huff. Jack didn’t even acknowledge Maria’s presents, not that she wanted him to.
“Mom, I’ve told you a hundred times. I’ve got a boyfriend back at Hudson. Besides, It’s none of your business who I’m sleeping with.” Maria said, tired of the conversation before it even started.
“This is why we don’t talk Maria. You think you are so above the rest of your family,” Amy said, lighting a cigarette and handing it to Jack. Maria scoffed and looked out the window.
“Mom, seriously. Just drop me at Alex and Zan’s. I’ll call you tomorrow.” Maria said, knowing it was the only way she was going to get away from her mom for the night.
“Fine,” Amy sulked. “Turn here,” she ordered Jack and he silently followed her directions all the way to the apartment.
When they pulled up to the building, Maria quickly got out of the car, took out her bag and began to walk away from the car when her mother stopped her by getting out of the car. “So, will you be making it to see the rest of your family while you are here?” Her mother asked, still pouting.
“Yes, mom. Just let me get some rest. I Will Call You Tomorrow!” she said and then turned on her heel and into the apartment building. Soon, she was standing in front of Alex and Zan’s door, knocking furiously. She couldn’t wait to see them.
“What’s up!” Alex greeted as he opened the door and pulled Maria in, in one swift movement.
“Is she here?” Zan asked walking into the living room. He smiled when he saw her.
“You know I’m kicking both of your asses, right?” Maria asked, as she crossed her arms over her chest.
“What did we do?” Alex asked, innocently.
“Oh I don’t know. My mother picking me up from the airport maybe. With her very talkative fuck buddy.” Maria added.
“I’m sorry,” Alex said as they all sat on the couch together. “But you know how she is. She cornered me. And she threatened my bodily harm if I didn’t let her pick you up.”
“She’s missed you, Maria.” Zan said.
“Yeah, I bet. She looked really broken up,” Maria pouted, knowing she sounded like a five year old, but there were some things that couldn’t just be forgiven and forgotten. “Look, I’m just in a really good place right now. You know, I’m dealing with issues, and Michael is great, and I can actually say that I love him. I do not need to deal with my mom right now.”
Alex and Zan just listened, as they always did, knowing that Maria just needed a little time to vent.
“And it isn’t just that. I’ve got my Grandfather and my Aunt and Uncle to deal with. On top of that, the aunt that I like. You know, the one that is close to my age…Gone! Spending the holidays in Napa Valley, that bitch!” Maria chuckled, at her rant. “Ahh, fuck ‘em. Michael will be here New Year’s Eve, and until then I can deal.”
“Well, you know you can crash here for two weeks if you want. I’m out of school, and Alex is off until after New Years.” Zan said motioning at Alex.
“I really really love you guys,” Maria said with a smile.

Chapter 40
“Maria, get your ass out of bed,” Zan yelled before slapping her playfully on the butt.
“NO!” Maria moaned like a small child.
“Yes, yes, yes,” Zan laughed, “You know if you don’t get up and go over to your grandfather’s house, your mother will just come to get you.”
‘Uggg, I know.” Maria said sitting up on Zan’s bed. After much protest, Maria finally took the bed that he offered while he slept on the couch.
“Here’s your coffee,” Alex said handing her a mug as he entered the room.
“Thank you,” Maria smiled warmly at her friends. She’d been in Roswell for 2 days and had avoided hanging out with her family, but today she had to go to her grandfather’s house, which wouldn’t have been THAT bad if her mother wasn’t coming too. It was one of those times when her Grandfather and mother were trying to get along. Gag.
They were going to put up the Christmas Tree, it seemed kind of dumb, because no one in her family actually was a Christian, but they always celebrated the secular Christmas. She remembered how much she used to love Christmas. She still loved the season, but the bitter feelings she had toward most of her family kind of made the season suck. After the Tree they were going to her Aunt and Uncle’s house for a formal, hoity-toity Christmas dinner. Yuck.
Just as she was making her way out of the apartment, her cell phone rang. “Hello?” she answered.
“Hello, my love.” Michael replied. He knew that Maria had to do the big family thing today, so he knew she would need his support.
“Hey, baby,” Maria said, her smile lightly up her face. She began walking toward the nice side of town where her grandfather lived. She had lived on that side of town with her grandfather for years, being that he raised her, since her mother couldn’t, but it still seemed like a foreign land. It was amazing what the best boyfriend on the world. It was amazing what the best boyfriend on the planet and 5 months 2000 miles away could do.
“So, what are you doing?” Michael asked.
“Walking to hell, I mean my family Christmas Tree event,” she laughed. Talking to Michael, she felt she could face anything.
“Just think, I’ll be there in 4 days, and Christmas is in 3. You will make it.” Michael said. “So, how are Zan and Alex?”
“They are good. We’ve been having a good time.” She smiled. “We drove around and looked at lights last night. And after the hell dinner tonight, we are going to go out to Hondo to see he light show. We’ll probably hit up midnight Mass in the desert on Christmas Eve.” She informed Michael.
“Sounds fun,” Michael replied, glad her whole vacation wasn’t being ruined by her family.
“See, I like Christmas. I LOVE Christmas. I just hate my family.” Maria chuckled lightly. “Maybe when you get here, we can go back to your hotel and have our own Christmas,” she said getting more and more excited at the thought. “With lights, and presents and everything.” She said, downright chipper.
“I would want nothing more,” Michael said, smiling at his little pixies excitement.
“Mmm, ok. Well I’m almost here,” Maria said, hating to get off the phone, but after talking to Michael, she knew that the day wouldn’t be that bad.
“Ok, well just remember that I love you. And let everything that they say go in one ear and out the other. I’ll be there soon, and we will be celebrating New Years together.”
“Ok, I love you, boo boo.”
“Love you too, bye bye, baby.” Michael said before hanging up the phone.
Soon, Maria was standing in front of her childhood. She took a deep breath before she let herself in the front door. “Is that Maria?” the syrupy sweet voice of her grandfather’s wife, who was all of 40 years old while her grandfather was 70.
“Yeah it’s me.” She said, trying to sound a friendly as possible. She could do this. It wasn’t that hard.
“Nice of you to make an appearance.” Her mother said, as the family came to the foyer to greet her.
“It’s only 11:00,” Maria said looking at her watch.
“It’s fine, dear,” her condescending step-grandmother said. “We were just starting the apple-cinnamon cider.”
“Cool,” Maria said, ignoring her mother, and following Michelle (grandad’s wife), her grandfather, and mother into the kitchen. Luckily her mother did not bring her latest boyfriend. That would have just been way too weird.
So they all sat around talking. They talked for a few hours, everyone asked about school, and her grandfather seemed surprisingly supportive of her. He’d never really talked to her like she was an adult, able to make her own responsible decisions before. Her mother could always be counted upon to show as little class as possible, but Maria was just happy that she and her grandfather were getting along so well. They were even talking politics, and he was actually listening to her. It’s amazing what going away to a good college, and making good grades did. She hadn’t known before, because she had kind of always put partying before school.
Soon, it was time to break out the tree, and while her mother sat on the couch, sort of directing everything, Maria and her uncle put the lights and ornaments on the tree. When they were done, they took pride in their work and sat down on the couch.
Her grandfather, David, looked at his watch and said, “Alright, we better get ready for dinner, we are supposed to be at Steve and Mary Jo’s by 6:30. Steve nodded and said he would meet them at his house. Her mom left, not wanting to go to dinner. She didn’t get along well with Steve’s wife, and that was about the only thing Maria and her mother had in common.
**********
“So, we here you have a boyfriend,” Mary Jo began as she passed the potatoes to Maria. “It is serious?”
Maria dished out her food, and passed the bowl on to her cousins, two spoiled brats that had, at 14 and 12 had already thrown a dozen fits in the hour she had been at the house. “Well, we are taking it slow, but I really like him,” Maria said, not willing to give up much information about her relationship with Michael.
“Marriage in the cards?” Mary Jo asked, her perfectly manicured eye-brow raising, as if she had just thought of the most brilliant plan in the world and she was sharing it with someone she was sure would agree.
Before Maria could answer, her grandfather came to the rescue. “I think it might be a little early for that.” He said, matter-of-factly. Maria silently thanked him, hoping the conversation would be dropped, and it was, in favor of the meaning of Christmas in the religious sense.
Maria just remained silent, knowing that if she got into this conversation, she was just going to start a fight. But when the conversation turned to morality, she couldn’t help herself. Sure, her grandfather was siding with the secularists, but she couldn’t just let Mary Jo act as if the only moral people were the religious ones.
“So, what you’re saying is that morality was born out of religion?” Maria asked.
“Well yes. The reason our country has survived is that it was founded on Christian morality.” Mary Jo said. This woman was a lawyer. It was scary.
“And what morals are those?” Maria asked.
“Well, treating others as you want to be treated. The 10 commandments…” Mary Jo answered.
“And no other religions believe in those things? No atheist people fallow that moral code?” Maria asked, knowing that Mary Jo had nothing to say.
Just then, her cousin, Jilly came into the room. “Sweety, go into the other room,” Mary Jo said, like she was talking to a 5 year old. The girl was 14. “Well, I don’t think we need to talk about this anymore,” she said turning back to Maria, and giving her a death glare. Granddad let up as well, but Maria, was still a little perturbed. Oh well, who cared what they thought.
At the end of the night, her grandfather drove her back to Alex and Zan’s apartment. “I was proud of you, tonight.” He said to Maria.
Maria nearly choked. “What?”
“The way you handled that argument was very intelligent.” He said.
“Thank you,” Maria said, smiling. Wow. She didn’t think that would happen in a million years. Things weren’t that bad. And Michael would be coming in 3 days. Maybe Christmas wasn’t so bad.
