CHAPTER 12
“Good job, baby! I knew you could do it!” Max beamed for his girlfriend across the phone.
“And I couldn’t have done it without you. You knew everything she was going to ask!”
“Hey, don’t go giving me a big head, now. Anyone who had been to that board before could have told you the same things,” Max laughed over the phone.
“Yeah, but it wasn’t just anybody, it was you,” Liz’s voice softened. “Thank you so much, Max. I love you.”
Max’s heart swelled at her declaration of love. He honestly wasn’t sure if he would ever hear those words fall from her gorgeous lips. He felt it was only right for him to return her feelings. “I love you too, Liz.”
After a moment of nothing but charged air over the line, Max decided to lighten the mood. “So...how are we celebrating tonight?”
Liz’s face dropped, realizing that she couldn’t even really share the celebration with the one person in the world she most wanted to. “Oh, Max...I’m sorry...but...I already promised some of the people from work that I’d take them out tonight. I’m so sorry, Max.”
Before Liz could continue, Max interrupted her. “It’s okay, Liz. You go ahead and have fun.” Max was never very good at hiding his emotions, and with Liz it was even harder.
Now Liz couldn’t see his face, but she could definitely hear the dejected tone of his voice. “Max, look...” She started to propose and alternative suggestion, but Max didn’t let her finish.
“It’s not like you can really go anywhere in public with me anyway, right?”
“Max...”
Max lifted his voice just slightly for her sake. “Liz, it’s okay. Go out with your friends and have fun. Please, baby, you deserve it. We can celebrate another night.”
“Are you sure? Because we could...”
“Liz, stop it. Go. I’ll see ya tomorrow, okay?”
Liz nodded, knowing that he meant what he said. “Okay. I love you,” she said hoping he would say it back.
A smile graced Max’s face at her words. “I love you too, baby. Bye.”
Liz hung up the phone. After talking to Max, now, she didn’t really feel like going out. He was hurt and she knew it. She heard Maria knock on her door and decided to at least try to make the best of her night. She left with Maria and headed to the Icons for her celebration.
*****************
Max was getting angry. He had already popped one of his pills and he had just gotten back from the gym. He had punched the hell out of that bag but couldn’t seem to calm himself down. He was being irrational once again but he couldn’t stop. He wanted...no...he needed Liz here with him. She would calm him down. She would cradle his head to her chest and he would even out his breathing and everything would be fine. But she wasn’t here.
He kicked his wall, putting a nice dent in it. The fact that it was only a dent pissed him off more and he kicked it again, this time turning the dent into a small hole. He couldn’t figure out why he was mad. Liz was celebrating as she should be. She was with her friends and she was having a good time. The thought of Liz laughing with her friends made Max’s heart flutter. But as soon as he realized that she wasn’t laughing with him it made him angrier and suddenly the small hole he had just made in the wall grew a little bigger with the next swift kick.
******************
Liz had a funny feeling in her stomach. She couldn’t quite explain what it was, but she was sure it had something to do with Max. She quickly got up from the table she was sharing with Michael, Maria, and Alex.
“Where you goin, Parker?” Alex asked her.
“Are you upset we won’t let you get drunk?” Michael teased her. Liz’s night had been quite a celebration watching Michael and Alex get drunk because they were both 21, and Liz and Maria laughing at their dumb jokes. They were in a public place, so they couldn’t allow Liz to get hammered or they’d be in deep shit. They had promised to leave early and celebrate at the barracks some more, but that had been 3 hours ago.
“Um, I’m gonna head home, I’m tired. Besides, we have to go to work tomorrow. I suggest the rest of you get back as well, considering we all have to be up in...” Liz glanced at her watch, “4 hours.”
As Liz left them she could hear, “Party pooper,” come from Alex. She continued on her way out when she saw CSM Evans coming in. They stopped just outside the club.
“Parker! I’m glad you’re still here. I just stopped by to congratulate you.”
“Oh well, thank you, Sergeant Major.”
“It’s not a problem, you did a great job. I normally get everyone with that bull question. Someone must have filled you in on my tactics.” Diane teased.
Liz laughed a little shakily. “Um...what are you...” Liz was referring to the lateness of Diane being out.
“Oh...I had a late night in the office and then the hospital called and asked me to drop off clothes for Phillip. He’ll be coming home tomorrow, after all. So, I figured you would still be here and that I’d drop by to congratulate you. I would’ve asked Max to do it for me, but his stereo was turned up pretty loud and I know what that means. We’ll be spackling another hole in the morning. Anyway, I’ve gotta go. I’ll see you tomorrow at PT.”
Diane left Liz extremely upset. Max was in pain and he needed her. She got into her car and sped through the near empty streets to his house.
****************
Max heard a funny noise coming from outside his open window and thanked his lucky stars. He grabbed a nearby baseball bat. A burglar was trying to get in and he was going to pound the crap out of him. He’d been waiting for something like this his entire life.
He heard the noise get closer and raised his bat high in the air as he stood beside the window. Then he saw a hand come onto the sill. A small hand. He started to lower the bat when a thought occurred to him. A female burglar! He raised the bat again and saw a head of silky brown hair.
When her eyes turned to him she screamed. Max, seeing who it was, immediately dropped the bat on the ground and began helping her inside.
“Liz...are you fuckin crazy?! I could’ve killed you!” Max began dusting the dirt off her clothes.
“Well, it’s nice to know I’ve found myself a big strong man to protect me at all costs.” Her eyes immediately searched for the hole in the wall Diane said would be there. Sure enough, there it was beside his bed. She pointed to it. “Was that for me?”
Max lowered his head, ashamed for getting out of control like that. “I’m sorry, Liz.”
“Hey,” Liz rushed to him, placing her hands on either side of his face. “It’s okay. Your emotions just managed to get the better of you. It happens to all of us, ya know.”
“Yeah, but not like this! Normal people don’t do this! Normal people don’t kick holes in the wall because their girlfriend couldn’t hang out for one night! Normal...”
“You stop right now, Max!” Liz could no longer sit here and allow him to consider himself a freak. “Normal people have emotions, Max. And too often they hide them. Afraid to show who they really are. Or what means the most to them. Or what they’re afraid of. Max, just because you get upset, it doesn’t make you any less of a man. Your emotions are beautiful, and me knowing that you can’t hide your emotions makes the relationship a hell of a lot easier than most. It’s okay to feel things, Max.”
She wrapped her arms around him and let him whimper momentarily into her shoulder. He grabbed a hold of her hair and dipped her head back to give himself access to her sweet mouth. He couldn’t love her any more than he did at that very moment, and he wanted to show her.
He plundered the depths of her mouth, tasting every crevice while he gently eased her back onto his bed. As soon as the mattress was underneath her, she tore at his shirt, exposing his beautiful body for her hungry eyes. He helped her pull the dress she wore over her head, leaving her in black panties and nothing else. She was perfect...and she loved him despite his flaws...and he couldn’t ask for more.
She pulled down the zipper on his jeans, pushing them down his thighs along with his white boxers. While he pulled his jeans off, she pushed her panties down her legs and quickly pulled him back to her, eradicating the small space between them.
He took her smoothly and quickly. They panted against each others lips, gasping each other’s names.
Liz pushed down on his buttocks, wanting him as deep inside her as he could get. His pelvic bone touched hers, manipulating her swollen tissue. That was all it took before Liz was crying out. “Maaaaxxxxx!!!!!!”
The sound of his shrieked name caused Max to come involuntarily. He hadn’t even realized he was that close. He quickly pulled out, suddenly frightened.
“What’s the matter?” Liz breathed.
Max didn’t beat around the bush. “We didn’t use anything!” He started to get up, but Liz pulled him back quickly.
“It’s okay, Max, I’m on the pill.”
“You are?” Max was shocked. He hadn’t known she was on the pill.
“Yeah, I’ve been on it since before we met. It doesn’t hurt to have some added protection,” she smiled up at him.
His face reflected hers until they suddenly heard a door slam.
“Max, honey!!!” Diane yelled.
“Shit!” Max and Liz whispered together.

AN: OK, this part is also really short, but I honestly couldn't think of a better way to end it.
CHAPTER 13
Max and Liz scrambled to get dressed as they heard Diane’s footsteps coming slowly up the stairs. Max noticed that, in fact, his mother was so slow, it was almost as if she was giving them extra time. Liz looked Max in the eyes while trying unsuccessfully to zip the back of her dress. “Did you lock the door?” she whispered. Liz knew the answer from the expression on her inexperienced boyfriend’s face and hurried even more to find her panties. They were nowhere in sight and the couple was running out of time.
Max gently pushed Liz into the closet, being sure to kiss her quickly before closing the door on his beloved. Just as he shut the door to the closet and finished zipping up his jeans, his bedroom door creaked open and Diane spoke from outside the door.
“Max, honey, Kyle is here. He said he’s been knocking for five minutes. Didn’t you hear him?”
“No, mom, I guess I didn’t,” Max tried to act casual.
Diane pushed the door open. “Well, he’s on his way...oh...here he is.” Kyle came inside Max’s room and Diane left them alone.
“Hey, Kyle. What are you doing here?” Max wracked his brain for a way to get rid of him. Liz was still in the closet. He watched as Kyle looked around the room, inspecting it.
“Did you forget I’m spending the night? Dad just left and he won’t be back til the afternoon. He doesn’t like me being alone all night.”
“Oh yeah.” Max had forgotten about Kyle. Kyle’s dad was an MP (military police). He worked strange hours sometimes and Diane and Phillip had agreed to let Kyle stay with them whenever he worked the night shift.
“Who’s the lucky lady?” Kyle grinned.
“What?” Max searched the room, looking for an answer to how Kyle could have possibly known. He watched Kyle go over to the dresser, where he turned around back to Max, dangling a pair of black panties from his index finger. Liz’s panties.
“Gimme those!” Max snatched them from Kyle’s hand. Max’s face turned a crimson color as he shoved the underwear into his pocket.
“Where is she?”
“What?” Max was so embarrassed and still a little out of breath from all the running around.
“I knock for 5 minutes and no answer. It still smells like sex in here. And just before your mom showed up I heard this piercing scream. ‘Maaaaaaxxxxxxxxx!’” Kyle imitated, then laughed at Max’s wide eyes. “Where is she Max?” Kyle looked out the window, but she wasn’t on the roof or anywhere on the ground. “Nope, not there. Maybe under here.” He looked under the bed, but still nothing. "Lady with the pretty panties," he whispered in a sing-song voice, "Come out, come out where ever you are."
“There’s no way she went anywhere this quick. I’ll find her. It’s that new girl, Tess, isn’t it? She’s totally got the hots for you, man.” Max cringed. He’d wouldn’t touch that skank with a 10 foot pole. Kyle continued as he searched out the premises. “I told her you were dangerous, but she just seems to be more intrigued.” Max nearly threw up in his mouth.
There was only one more place to check. He started walking up to the closet. Max threw himself in front of the closet, blocking Kyle. “Ha, ha! I knew it. Come on, Max, cat’s outta the bag, let me meet her.”
“No way!”
“Ok, I’ll just go see what your mom’s doing?” Kyle taunted him. He didn’t get far. Max grabbed his bicep.
“Alright!” Max closed his eyes and Kyle opened the door to the closet. Max didn’t know what else to do. He couldn’t risk getting Liz in trouble.
“I’ll show that bitch dangerous! Who’s Tess?” a jealous Liz asked as soon as Kyle revealed her. Max opened his eyes slowly.
“Nobody, baby,” Max quickly assured her as he came over to her and took her hands.
“Liz???” Kyle was shocked. He had no idea that Max was still seeing the girl they had met at Icon. Max had told him a few weeks ago that she found out he lied about his age and didn’t want anything to do with him. Not to mention that Liz technically worked for Max’s mother. Kyle looked over the couple. Liz didn’t look happy and Max was acting awful sweet. It was disgusting.
“Who’s Tess, Max?” Max shook his head vehemently.
“She’s just this new girl at school. She’s nobody.”
“She’s been hitting on you?” Liz was getting really upset over this.
“Baby, she’s nobody. I swear,” Max soothed Liz with his amber eyes, telling her without words that she was the only one for him.
“Chill out, Liz, Max hasn’t even looked twice at her,” Kyle piped up as he gave Liz a once-over. "And now, I can see why."
Liz and Max turned to regard Kyle. Their expressions angry at his intrusion. He smiled widely at her. He grinned cheekily as he said, “Don’t worry, I won’t tell.”

AN: I'm so so sorry! I really didn't want to use Tess, but there was no one else and I couldn't very well use Isabel! Tess's part is, however unfortunate, crucial to the story. Oh my gosh, I might have said too much!

AN: Okay, everyone, this is the last update for a little while. I'm going on vacation and I won't be back for a couple of weeks. Also, this is the last part where there's no angst. After this, the drama will come steam rolling in. So enjoy it now, because it will not last, I promise you.
CHAPTER 14
Liz left once she was certain Kyle would keep his big mouth shut. She didn’t mind giving him a small lesson on tact either, what with the way he babbled about Tess not knowing who was in the closet. Max had to second her motion on that one. After a few sweet kisses goodbye, Liz was gone.
*****************
A couple of weeks later, Liz was once again working the lunch counter by herself. Everyone else was out eating lunch, of course. Diane came in with her husband on crutches.
“SPC Parker! Tomorrow’s the first, isn’t it?”
“Yes, Sergeant Major,” Liz smiled brightly while going to parade rest.
“Good! I’m looking forward to pinning those stripes on for you.”
“Me too, Sergeant Major.” Liz was so excited. Tomorrow morning, on the first of July, she would become a Sergeant, and she couldn’t wait.
Diane smiled before turning to her husband. “SPC Parker, I want you to meet my husband, Phillip.”
Liz stuck out her hand for Phillip to shake. “It’s nice to meet you, sir. I’m glad you’re feeling better.”
Phillip laughed. “Yeah, well they’ve got me on so much medication it’s like being in a big field of daises all day long.”
Liz smiled remembering how Max had mentioned his dad being quite loopy lately. She started to wonder what Max was doing right now. She knew he was in summer school. He had failed science and needed to take it over. Liz wanted to help him, but she had been so busy herself lately, it had been almost impossible. And on top of that, for the past week, Liz had been trying to teach Max some techniques to help him calm down whenever he got aggravated. It has been a slow start, but she’s sure he’ll be getting much better.
Phillip broke Liz from her thoughts. “So, SPC Parker...what are you doing tonight?”
“Nothing, sir,” Liz responded immediately. She was going to be with Max tonight, but that wouldn’t be until much later, so her schedule was clear.
“Well, I wanted to thank you in person for your help the day of my accident.”
“Oh, you’re welcome, sir,” Liz replied sweetly.
“How about just one more dinner at our house? Diane is going to make my favorite...spaghetti,” Phillip tempted Liz with food the same way Diane had done the first time. Liz knew they did it on purpose. It had been a long time since she had tasted a home cooked meal. The last time, besides the last dinner at Diane’s house, was in December when she had gone home on leave for the holidays. Since then, all she’s been eating is chow hall food and fast food. This time though, Liz was willing to jump at the opportunity.
“Id like that, sir,” Liz smiled.
“Great! Then we’ll see you tonight,” Phillip shook her hand once more and the two of them left Liz to her duties.

On the other side of Fort Carson, Max was in science class bored out of his mind. Mrs. Connelly was passing back the last test they had been given and Max’s did not look good. There was so much red ink, he could barely read what he had written. The top of the page showed a score of 37. Max rolled his eyes and sighed loudly, quickly turning the test back over so no one else would see it. He had to pass this class because he refused to sit through this again next year.
He hated having to be in summer school at all, but he would do whatever he had to in order not to get this wench for a teacher again next year. ‘Maybe I’ll ask Liz to help me tonight,’ he thought to himself.
His eyes went to the blond head of hair seated in front of him. Tess Harding. She was in summer school with him also, but not because she needed it. She was a science whiz. She was there as an assistant for the teacher. She wanted the credits for college. Max thought she was a skank. Ever since she showed up at their school, almost every guy had claimed to have had a piece. Max was never one to listen to the rumor mill, considering he had been the butt of the jokes for so many years, but this one he believed. He couldn’t stand the sight of her. She was always trying to talk to him and he hated it. He figured she had pinned him for her next victim. ‘She ain’t gettin her dirty claws into me,’ he thought briefly before turning to the clock on the wall.
The bell rang, signaling the end of the day, and Max got up quickly, wanting to get out of that building now. But he was never that lucky.
“Mr. Evans...Ms. Harding...could you two stay back a moment?” Mrs. Connelly said before everyone left the room. Max and Tess went up to the teacher’s desk, Tess with a bounce in her step, Max with his head down the whole way. “Ms. Harding, I was wondering if you wouldn’t mind doing an assignment for me?”
“Of course not, Mrs. Connelly! How can I help?” Her sugary sweet smile and whiny voice made Max want to throw up. ‘How could anyone be that happy all the time?’ he wondered.
“I would like you to tutor Mr. Evans.”
“What?!” Max shouted.
“Mr. Evans...you only have two months left and you’re not doing very well. I know for a fact that you don’t want to see me again next year, so do yourself and me a favor and take Ms. Harding’s help. She’s an excellent assistant and I’m sure this will be no challenge for her.” The woman’s voice was tight and her eyes were menacing. Max knew he couldn’t say no.
Max grumbled, “Fine,” in a tight, low voice, clenching his jaw and his fists the entire trip home.
*************
Max was upstairs laying on his bed in just a pair of long shorts bouncing a tennis ball off his ceiling and catching it before throwing it again. It was a really hot day and Max was starting to get hungry. The clock on his dresser read: 4:30. He rolled out of bed, deciding to go downstairs to find out when dinner would be ready.
In the kitchen, his mother was humming to herself and stirring a pot of spaghetti. “Hey, mom,” Max said as he went straight for the refrigerator.
“Hey, honey! Are you hungry?”
“Yeah, when’s dinner gonna be ready?”
“Any minute now.” Diane looked at her son’s wardrobe and frowned. “Would you mind going back upstairs and putting a shirt on?”
“What for?” Max mumbled around the piece of bread in his mouth.
“We’re having company,” Diane said.
Max didn’t ask who it was. He really didn’t care. He just treaded back out of the kitchen to heed his mother’s request. Ever since Phillip had come out of the hospital, the three of them had been doing ok. Max wasn’t getting into any trouble and his parents seemed to be laying off a little bit. Diane and Phillip couldn’t have been happier. Their son was finally getting better, it seemed.
Just as Max was passing the front door to head upstairs the doorbell rang. He turned around and opened it up.
“Liz? What are you doing here?” He tried to keep his voice down, unaware that his parents had invited her.
“Your dad invited me. Now, let me in,” Liz smiled at him when he blew out a breath. As she walked into the house she whispered into his ear, “What did you think, I came to see you?”
“It would’ve been nice,” he told her. Diane came up behind him then.
“SPC Parker, I’m glad you could make it. Why don’t you come in and have a seat.” She looked at her son again. “Max, please, go get dressed.” She turned to walk back into the kitchen and Liz leaned up to whisper to Max again.
“I wish you didn’t have to.” Liz bit her lip when Max closed his eyes in bliss and looked around the now empty hall they were standing in. He leaned in and kissed her quickly, giving her his tongue before stepping away from her and checking the hall once again for his parents.
“I love you,” he mouthed before heading upstairs to change. Liz smiled and went into the kitchen where Phillip was already seated at the dinner table.
****************
Halfway through dinner, Liz found herself having a good time. Phillip was pretty cool and so was Diane. She was grateful that they weren’t goading Max tonight and it helped the meal go by smoothly. She was sitting on one side of the rectangular table with Max next to her. The parentals sat on the other side with Diane across from her.
Suddenly, she felt Max’s hand on her knee and her whole body tensed. She was afraid to look at him. Christ, his parents were just on the other side of the table. She had no idea what Max thought he was doing, but he was going to pay for it later.
“Wow, I think that medication’s starting to kick in,” Phillip said to no one in particular.
“Would you like me to take you to bed?” Diane asked her husband. He nodded.
She felt Max squeeze her knee and was relieved when he took his hand away. She let out the breath she had been holding and quickly excused herself to use the bathroom.
Diane told her where it was before getting up to help Phillip.
Liz closed the bathroom door behind her and took a few deep breaths, grateful to get out of that room for just a moment. She was at the sink when the door suddenly opened and Max stepped in.
“Are you crazy?” she whispered. “Your parents are in the other ooohhhh....” she moaned softly when she felt his lips on her neck.
“Shhh...” Max put a finger to her lips and kissed her hard. “Don’t worry. Mom’s putting Dad to bed. She’ll be in there at least 15 minutes. Plenty of time.” He scooped her up easily, depositing her on the sink and working the button on her jeans.
“You’re insane. Max we don’t have enough...oh god...” She mewled when Max slipped two fingers inside of her. He quickly undid his own pants and pushed inside of her quickly and quietly.
“Yessss...” he hissed. He pumped into her quickly, the thrill of getting caught hanging over his head. He knew it was wrong, but it just felt so good.
“Max, hurry,” Liz whispered, wanting him to make her cum right this instant. He was absolutely nuts, and so was she, but god, he felt good.
Just as Max’s seed was spilling inside her there was a knock on the door. “Liz...are you still in there?”
“Yes, Sergeant Major!” Liz tried to calm her breathing with Max’s head buried in her neck.
“Did you see where Max went?” Diane called from the other side.
“No,” Liz yelled back.
“I’ll go check his room,” Diane said before leaving. Max started to shake with laughter and Liz found herself laughing too. There were both crazy and Liz just tapped Max on the shoulder.
“You have to go,” Liz whispered.
“Okay,” Max nodded, wiping the tears of mirth from his eyes. He quietly slipped out of the bathroom and evaded his mother until he had turned the corner. Liz heard Max telling his mother a quick lie about being in the other bathroom before she left the bathroom herself after fixing her clothes and hair.
The rest of the evening went wonderful and Liz left the house feeling rather good about everything. She would be seeing Max that night anyway and she couldn’t wait to pay him back for this evening. She was already thinking of things to do to his poor body while it was completely at her mercy.

AN: Okay, it's finally ready. Thanx again for all the wonderful comments. You guys make me feel all fuzzy inside! <sigh!> Here ya go!
CHAPTER 15
“God, Liz!” Max yelped as Liz rode him like an expert jockey. Max felt the tips of his toes start to curl and Liz could feel his body begin to tremor underneath her. Liz knew he was almost there, so she lifted up until just the tip of him remained inside her and waited.
Max’s hips bucked uncontrollably, desperately trying to bathe her walls in his cream, but Liz would just move further out of his reach. When Max finally opened his eyes, he looked at his angel and wondered what the hell she was doing.
Liz tsked at him, wagging her index finger in front of his face. “Not yet,” she whispered. Max looked at her as if she had snakes crawling out of her eyes. “Did you think that was funny?” she purred.
“What?” Max had no idea what she was talking about. His mind was blank from the mind-blowing sex they were supposed to be currently having.
“That one-on-one time in your bathroom with the one person who can ruin this for us just on the other side of the door,” she seemed to manage in one breath.
Max didn’t know what to say. So he tried, “I’m sorry?” he asked rather than stated.
Liz slowly shook her head as she smirked at him. “Wrong answer.” She began to ride him slowly, just letting him in a little at a time, before lifting up again, wanting him to have just a little, before she snatched it away just as quickly. He didn’t deserve to cum yet. He had been naughty.
“God, Liz, please...I can’t,” he whispered almost painfully. But it didn’t help. Liz just continued to assault his body. Giving a little...then taking it back. Max wanted to cum so badly, but at the same time, even with the torture being almost unbearable, Liz was making his body hum in a way it had never hummed before. Secretly, he wanted the torture to continue.
Finally, Liz gave up trying to punish him. She felt like she was punishing herself in the process and she needed him too badly. So she flipped them over and allowed Max to pump into her fast and hard. She kneaded the muscles in his back as a fire raged inside her, wanting him to put it out once and for all.
Max couldn’t seem to make himself cum at all now. She had made him wait too long and now his body wouldn’t be satisfied until he could no longer move. His thighs burned in protest, it was taking all his strength to continue, but he wouldn’t stop. He couldn’t.
Liz couldn’t take it anymore. She knew she had tormented him, but did that really mean she had to be tormented herself. She was only trying to teach him a lesson. Now the tables were being turned. The pleasure was unbearable and Liz knew she had to milk him before she passed out. She leaned up to whisper raggedly into his ear, “Now, Max...NOW!”
His body responded to her voice without hesitation, his cock throbbing painfully in release, his body quivering with the pleasure he had just experienced. “Liz!”
They both passed out, needing no words. Their damp bodies underneath the cool sheets of Liz’s bed.
****************
The next day, on the morning of 1 July, Liz stood before her peers and superiors at attention waiting patiently for CSM Evans, who stood at her side, to begin the ceremony. Everyone was at parade rest before her, and she tried to keep the smile off her face. It was not easy.
CSM Evans called the group to attention so that SPC DeLuca could read the orders out loud. “Attention to orders!” Maria read the orders promoting Liz to Sergeant and watched in excitement as CSM Evans pinned her rank on her left collar, and as per Liz’s request, Maria pinned the rank on the other collar.
Just then, Michael came running up to Liz from the back of the formation carrying a very large bucket. He dumped the contents on top of Liz’s head: Ice Water. Liz shrieked in surprise and then laughed as the cold water rushed down her uniform. Everyone started clapping and hollering, excited for her. Liz had managed to make her sergeant in two years. That was awesome, not to mention rare for the finance unit. It meant that she had worked really hard, and she deserved it.
***************
Liz had floated on a cloud all that day long, relishing being ranked SGT Parker. She loved the attention and the respect she had been receiving. She couldn’t wait to see Max.
In her room that night, her cell phone rang. She checked the caller i.d. and smiled. “Hey, baby,” she purred into the receiver.
“Hey, gorgeous. Look, baby, I just wanna say congratulations, but I’m not gonna be able to see you tonight.”
“But your mom’s in Texas on TDY, I wanted to see you. What’s going on?” Liz said, disappointed.
Max hesitated. “Well...don’t get mad.”
“Why do I not like the sound of that?” Liz was getting worried now.
“It’s just...that I have to study.”
Liz felt her anger melt. “Oh, well why didn’t you say so? You can still come over and we can...study,” she giggled.
Max felt a blush creep up his cheeks. “Baby, as much as I’d like to study with you, I won’t be alone.” Max winced, waiting for an explosion.
Liz’s anger was suddenly back. “Who are you going to be with?” she asked in a tight, controlled voice.
“Tess.” Max couldn’t lie to her.
Liz’s anger boiled over, and she didn’t want to show it, but she couldn’t seem to contain it either. “Why?!”
“I asked you not to get mad,” Max told her. He spoke again before she could say anything else, not wanting her to get the wrong idea. “Just listen to me for a second, ok? I’m failing science...again. The teacher assigned Tess as my tutor. There was nothing I could do.”
Liz felt herself grow sympathetic. “I’m sorry, Max. I should’ve been able to help you more.”
“It’s not your fault, Liz. You had other things on your mind. And it paid off.” Liz’s heart swelled. He was so understanding. “I don’t know when I’ll be done with this. Can I take a rain check on the study lesson?” he asked hopefully.
“Of course you can,” Liz smiled into the phone. “You just pass that class, ok? I’ll see ya tomorrow.”
“Okay. I love you.”
“I love you too, Max. Bye.” Liz hung up the phone and laid back on her bed, flipping through the television channels, trying to get the thought of her man and some wench spending time together out of her head.
****************
“See, Max, you’re doing really good!” Tess beamed at her partner. He wasn’t as dumb as he had seemed in class.
“Well you make it easy. Mrs. Connelly doesn’t teach as well as you do!” Max told her, shocked that she had been able to help him.
“You sound surprised.”
“Well, ya know, I just thought...that you were...” Max didn’t want to tell her what he thought. She would hate him. And so far, she had been really cool with him. She had managed to change his mind about her in a little over an hour.
“That I was a slut,” Tess said without shame.
Max head whipped up at her harsh words. “No! Not...I mean...”
“Max, it’s okay. I know what the guys say about me. It’s always the same, no matter which city or school.”
“Sorry,” Max said sincerely.
“Don’t worry about it.” Tess was used to having the guys think she was easy. She really was a nice girl, but no one ever took the time to find that out. She was glad Max seemed to be not so tense tonight, as he usually seemed in class.
“So...what are you in for?” Max asked the popular question some of the kids in school used.
“My mom and dad are Special Forces,” Tess explained.
“Really?” Max was impressed. Special Forces were the elite of the Army.
“Yeah. They don’t spend much time at home. You know how it is.”
“Yeah,” Max related. “What’s your mom do...admin?”
“Exactly. Very good with a computer...and leaving me with my grandparents for weeks at a time.” Tess was a little bitter about all the separation she had been through, but thankfully, her school work helped her occupy most of her time.
Max was actually having a good time talking to her. She wasn’t at all like the junior class said she was. She was actually a really nice person and they seemed to be hitting it off. As soon as the thought entered Max’s mind, he immediately felt guilty. He shouldn’t be thinking about any girls except for Liz. And from now on, he wouldn’t. But he couldn’t help admitting that Tess wasn’t all that bad.
************
Later that night...
Max was stirred from sleep at the tell-tale signs of an intruder. He groggily opened one eye and checked the clock. 2:16 AM. A smile inched up his face and he pretended to still be asleep. He heard the intruder come through the window and laid still, anticipating what would happen next.
“Whatever, I know you’re awake,” Liz whispered. Max opened his eyes and grabbed at her, wanting her next to him. Once he had her sprawled out on top of his naked chest, one thigh draped over the steel behind his boxers, Liz asked, “How’d it go?”
Max was no idiot. He knew his girlfriend well, and her stiff movements told him she was upset. “Baby...do me a favor.”
“What?” Liz hissed. Okay, so she was upset. She couldn’t help it. She was jealous. She should have been the one helping Max pass his science class, not some cum-guzzling gutter slut. 'Okay, that was cruel,' Liz thought as soon as the image etched into her brain.
“Take deep breaths...and try and let your mind blank out,” his soft voice rumbled in her ear. Her eyes slipped shut at his tone as he tried to get her to incorporate the calming steps she had taught him. As soon as her eyes closed, Max took her mouth in a torrid kiss, dueling their tongues in a match of what their lower bodies were already mimicking.
Max stripped her shirt off her body slowly, carefully memorizing every inch of smooth skin being revealed to him. He dipped his head to lick a path from her collarbone to that tingly spot behind her ear. He moved his hand to the back of her bra, flicking it open without much effort. He trailed his hands down her shoulders slowly, taking the bra straps with him before getting rid of that annoying thing once and for all.
Liz gently kissed his neck, moving her lips back to his, kissing him lazily, almost sloppily. She took her time with him, not wanting to remove herself from the warmth of his body just yet. She felt Max’s nimble fingers unsnap her jeans, and she helped him eagerly push them out of the way, taking her panties with them.
Max didn’t need to help her get ready for him, she was already so wet. He inched inside her easily, pushing up to bury himself in her depths. He eased them to the side, rolling them both over so that he could have the top this time. He wanted to love her slowly. She was too special for anything less than all he had to give her.
Their breathing labored as their lungs took in all the air they could get. Their soft pants filled the dark room until an occasional moan would bounce quietly off the walls. “I love you,” Max whispered against her soft lips. “I love you so much.”
Liz echoed his words. “I love you too...so much.” The bed began to squeak slightly, before picking up pace.
Suddenly, a strip of light filled the room. “Max, what are you do....” the voice of Phillip Evans floated into the room and Max stilled above Liz, trying as hard as he could to shield her face with his body.
“Dad!” Max shouted, discomposed and praying for a miracle.
.
“Oh...” Phillip apparently felt embarrassed and looked as if he was going to leave his son alone. Liz was still trying to hide behind his shoulder. The two were speechless and didn’t want to give anything away so they stayed perfectly still, waiting in fright for Phillip to assume his son was with some girl.
The door to his room began to close and the two almost let out the breath they had been holding...almost. The room filled with light once again as the door swung open and Phillip exclaimed in anger and confusion, “PARKER?!”

AN: Okay, I know the ice water thing is considered hazing, and it's not allowed in the military anymore, but it was too good to resist.

AN: Hey guys! I actually have another part ready for you. I know...it's too soon...and pretty soon you're gonna lynch me for building your hopes about the updates and then taking them away again when I don't have another update just as soon. Sorry about that! But I'm gonna post it anywaz!
CHAPTER 16
And there it was. The distinct sound of a speeding car coming to a screeching halt. It was over.
“Both of you get dressed and come downstairs now!!” Phillip was red-faced and heated. He couldn’t even think. All he had planned on doing was getting a glass of water before he heard noises coming from his son’s room. If he had still been high, he might not have even recognized his previous dinner guest, but they weren’t so lucky.
Phillip slammed Max’s door closed and headed straight for the kitchen to wait for his conniving son and the statutory rapist he had been caught with. He really wished his wife was here right now. But unfortunately, she had business to attend to in Texas. Phillip was never very good at dealing with the boy. Sometimes, Phillip had even been afraid of his own son.
In a way, he felt sorry for the girl who obviously had no idea who she was involved with. But his sympathy didn’t last long when he realized that this girl was older than his son and she worked for his wife and she was practically raping him. Phillip may have heard the exchange of ‘I love you’s’ but it didn’t matter considering their age difference. This had to be illegal!
Max and Liz trekked down the steps sullenly, scared out of their minds. They noticed Phillip sitting at the dinner table, his head down. Phillip looked up when he heard them enter the room. His eyes blazed into the young girl who really didn’t look much older than his son. But she was older.
“How long?” the man asked in a gruff, sleep disturbed voice. He watched them look at each other nervously. But neither of the kids answered his question. His voice boomed through the house as he asked once again, “HOW LONG?!”
Liz jumped unconsciously. Max immediately put a calming hand on her back, stroking her with his fingers. Phillip watched the intimate gesture and it only served to further infuriate him. He cocked a single eyebrow at his son and Max finally answered the question. “Almost three months,” he said softly.
“Three months?! And right under our noses the whole time?! Jesus, Max!”
Max didn’t know what to do. There was nothing he could possibly say that would change their being caught. He chanced a quick look at his love, and felt even worse when he saw her struggling not to cry under the scrutiny of his furious father.
Liz’s eyes watered but she refused to cry. She had to be strong for Max and for herself. She had to show her boyfriend’s father that there was nothing wrong with being in love. Liz silently prayed that Phillip would show some compassion for the two of them, but then he said the words she had dreaded hearing since this thing with Max had started.
“You just wait until your mother hears about this!” Liz’s eyes closed, a tear escaping despite her inner protests. “What are you crying about?! You’re practically raping him!”
“Dad! She is not raping me. What Liz and I have is purely consensual.” Max stood up for his relationship maturely, and Liz couldn’t have been more proud at the moment. He wasn’t throwing things or kicking things. Phillip didn’t seem to notice though.
“Do you think I give a rat’s ass that you happen to like it?! You’re a teenage boy, Max! Of course you like it! You’re still thinking with your dick and you have no idea that this little slut is taking advantage of you!”
“Don’t you ever call her that!!” Max flipped out. He wouldn’t stand here and have his father speak about Liz that way. The only thing that had stopped Max from choking his father to death was Liz’s hand on his arm.
Liz had seen Max ready to pounce and had quickly grabbed his arm when she saw Phillip step back, not wanting the situation to get worse than it already was. She had seen this coming. She had known they couldn’t hide forever and now it was over. To think it had only been over two months as well. It had seemed like so much longer.
“Parker...get out of my house,” Phillip stated leaving no room for argument. Liz hesitated only briefly, still clutching Max’s arm, until Phillip yelled, “NOW!”
Liz’s body jumped again and she hurried out of the house without another glance in the direction of that kitchen. She got out side the door and practically ran for her car, the tears streaming down her face with no longer a reason to try to hide her feelings. She couldn’t even think at this point. She was way too nervous for what was about to happen. She cried all the way home and probably would have cried all night too, but she got a phone call from Max.
“Hey,” he said gently.
“Hey,” she said back just as gently.
“I’m sorry, baby. I’m so sorry.”
Liz’s heart clenched. She didn’t know what to say. Neither of them did. So they just kept the phone to their ears all night, falling asleep to the lull of each other’s breathing.
**************
The next day, Diane came home extremely tired from the trip. She was jet-lagged and just wanted to fall asleep. She knew Max was at school because his jeep wasn’t in the driveway. She walked through the door and saw her husband’s distraught figure staring at the television not really watching the program. She went on alert immediately and demanded to know what had happened.
“I caught our son early this morning...in bed...with a woman,” was all Phillip said.
Diane honestly didn’t see that leaving her husband the look he had on his face. Their son was sexually active. No big deal. They would just have to sit down with him and discuss it like mature adults. They would just have to give him ‘The Talk.’ But judging from Phillip’s face, somehow, she didn’t think it would be that simple.
“It was Parker.”
Diane felt her blood turn red in that instant. “How dare she take advantage of our little boy! Who the hell does she think she is? That little tramp has no idea just who she’s dealing with!” Diane grabbed her husband’s arm and raced for the newly fixed SUV, hopping into the driver’s side and speeding straight for the JAG office.
***************
“I’m sorry, Sergeant Major, but the relationship is not illegal,” the officer behind the desk told the obviously very upset mother.
“How can it not be illegal?! He’s a child for Christ’s sake! She’s an adult!” Diane all but screamed at the lawyer.
“According to the state of Colorado they aren’t breaking any laws. She isn’t ten years his senior. From a legal standpoint there’s nothing you can do to her.”
The parents put their heads down and Diane rubbed her face. “This is bullshit!” Diane grabbed her husband’s arm and stomped out of the office, thoroughly pissed off.
Once they arrived home, Max was already there. The drive back had given Diane some time to think and although the anger had not gone, she had a very good idea of just what she could do to the new Sergeant under her command.
“I hope you’re happy, Max,” Diane said when she found him in his room. “That little girlfriend of yours is definitely going to pay for this.”
Max took note of the fact that his mother was angry, but that she also had a plan for Liz in mind. “Mom, what are you gonna do?” Max asked her nervously, very afraid for Liz.
“Oh don’t you worry about it, son. But I will tell you this: Once I’m through with her, she will know exactly what hell feels like.” Diane left her son to think about what she had just said and when she heard his window opening from outside his door, she let him go. She knew he was running for his whore, but she didn’t care. Let them wallow in their own guilt for a little while.
******************
Liz saw Max crawling through her window just as she was coming in her door, finished with work for the day.
“Max, what are you doing here, we’re already...” Max interrupted her by kissing her. He needed to feel her lips on his again, afraid it may be the last time.
Liz couldn’t have stopped if she wanted to. She knew this would be over for good soon, and she wanted to cherish these last moments with the man she was in love with. She kissed him back with wild abandon, allowing him to tear the uniform from her body and bury himself inside her.
The love making was fast and passionate, each lover trying to show with their bodies what they didn’t want to say with their voices. The completion came quickly and soon they were holding each other tightly, not knowing if this would be the last time.
“I’m so sorry, Liz,” Max whispered painfully. “I’m so sorry, baby.”
“I was there too, Max.” Liz held him and stroked her fingers through his thick, sweaty hair.
“But it’s my fault...if I hadn’t pursued you...if I hadn’t made you say yes...”
“Max! I am a grown ass woman. I didn’t have to say yes.” Max nodded slightly against her chest and held her tightly to him. After a while of silence, Liz finally asked what she had been wondering since last night. “Max?” Her voice was barely a whisper, but Max heard her all the same.
“Yeah?”
“What is she gonna do to me?” Liz’s voice quivered as her strength wavered.
Max’s tone didn’t sound much stronger than hers when he said, “I don’t know, baby. I just don’t know.” They held each other close for a long period before Max decided it was time for him to get home. He didn’t want to get Liz in more trouble than she was already facing.
Before Max left the way he came, he said, “This isn’t over, Liz. I promise. I will find a way for us to be together.” Liz looked him in his gorgeous amber eyes. “I love you. Please don’t give up. Not yet.” Max pleaded with her, but wasn’t sure if she was going to take his advice.
“I love you too, Max,” was all she said before ushering him out the window. Liz wished she had said more to him, but she didn’t want to make him any promises that she had no idea whether or not she could keep. Maybe it was better this way.

AN: Okay, I had to throw this out there because that last part kinda threw everyone into a frenzy. I know that technically, Liz isn’t much older, and Max isn’t much younger. However, without conflict, there is no story, and for what I have planned, there’s gonna be way more of an uproar as far as this story is concerned. Everyone will probably do things they won’t be proud of at the end of it all.
And for the most part, people tend to have different views when it comes to the ages of the people involved in something like this. From what I’ve found, the sexes of the people are also a big deal. Imagine if the tables were turned, and Liz was the 16 year old. That’s not a huge turnaround considering it’s only three years, but I couldn’t have made them that far apart, cuz that would’ve just been uncalled for and Liz would have been way too old to have met Max at all in her situation. Also, if Liz had been the younger one, the parents definitely wouldn’t have been understanding at all. Normally in a situation like this, the parents would be more understanding because he’s their son. So for the sole purpose of weaving a story, I’ve switched the roles.
And now I’m done blabbing on my views and issues. Please enjoy this next part, and try to keep in mind the chance of the roles being reversed and the way a parent might feel about that.
CHAPTER 17
The next morning for Liz began as officially the worst day of her life. She and Maria had gone to PT expecting it to be like any other day, except for Liz, any other day would have been heaven compared to what she was about to face.
They had been standing in formation with Captain Bruno in the front, telling everyone what they would be doing today. That’s when CSM Evans showed up and whispered to CPT Bruno. Liz’s eyes grew wide as she saw her commander nod at the Sergeant Major and pointed to her. “SGT Parker, Sergeant Major Evans says you need some help on your run. Personally, I think you’re fine. But if you want to be faster, I won’t stand in your way.” The commander smiled at Liz as she looked to Maria in desperation. Maria shook her head slightly, unable to help.
Liz looked up at Diane and watched a smile curl on the old woman’s lips as she beckoned Liz forward. Liz went to her, scared shitless of what would happen next. Luckily, for Liz, Diane didn’t waste any time on chit-chat. She started to run just as Liz reached her side and Liz kept up with her.
After 10 minutes of run time, Liz knew where they were going. The Special Forces Track. This track was nothing more than a six mile long dirt road that was particularly famous for the steep hills and low slopes that wrapped around a good part of Fort Carson. The whole track was better suited for a roller coaster than a good run. Liz had run this track before, but she knew today would be much worse than just a six mile run. Liz just hoped that track in high school had her equipped for this morning’s run.
The two women ran the track at a pace of a good 5 minute mile (army talk for running a mile in 5 minutes). They were going so fast, even Liz, with as good a runner as she was, had trouble keeping up. The thick air of the mountains also had an effect on Liz’s breathing. Diane wasn’t completely heartless, though. Once they had reached the top of a hill, she would drop Liz for a set of 20 push-ups before practically sprinting to the next hill. Then it would be 20 sit-ups. Liz was finding herself grateful for the stops to do exercises. It gave the poor girl a chance to catch her breath, sort of.
Liz would not falter though. She kept up with the woman who may one day be her mother-in-law. She would not allow Diane to intimidate her. The love she had for Max would hopefully get her through this.
Finally, they returned to the PT field from which they had started this hellacious run. Diane hadn’t said anything the whole time, and Liz was thankful for it. She didn’t want to hear the names that she would be called by a protective mother.
Once they stopped and Liz bent over breathing harshly, her legs feeling like a puddle of goo, her body drenched in sweat, Diane checked her watch. “Not bad, Parker. You’ve got exactly ten minutes to get to work.” Diane looked at Liz almost humorously. “Good luck.”
Diane turned away and Liz raced for her vehicle. There was no way in hell she would make it on time. She had to go straight to work after changing. She couldn’t possibly take a shower. There just wasn’t enough time, and she was already sure to be hung for this one. She would have to wait until lunch for a shower.
She put on deodorant and perfume, hoping to hide the smell of 6 miles and sped as quickly as she could without getting pulled over to work.
Liz made it work...ten minutes late. She had missed the formation and was greeted by a frantic Maria as soon as got inside. “What happened?!” Maria asked in a stage whisper.
“We went for a run,” Liz said sarcastically.
“That’s it?” Maria knew there was no way it was just a run.
“Yup,” Liz kept tight-lipped. She obviously didn’t want to tell Maria the whole story. So Maria left it alone, knowing that her friend would talk once she was ready.
“Oh...um...”
“What?” Liz asked, waiting for Maria to spit it out already.
“CPT Bruno wants to see you,” Maria said nervously.
“Perfect,” Liz mumbled and headed to the back of the office to get reamed by her commander.
“SGT Parker,” he greeted her warmly, surprising Liz. “Have a seat,” he gestured to the chair in front of his desk. Liz sat down, prepared for him to rip her a new asshole, but it didn’t happen. “What happened?” he asked, truly concerned.
“No excuse, sir,” Liz immediately said. She sure as fuck wasn’t going to tell him the truth.
“Wow. I assumed you would have had a good excuse. You’re never late.” Liz shook her head slowly, indicating that she truly didn’t have an explanation. “Ya know...standard procedure...says I’m supposed to give you a counseling statement for this.”
“Yes, sir,” Liz didn’t argue. A counseling statement was better than lost rank, even though it would be her first one ever. But then, CPT Bruno surprised her yet again.
“But why don’t we just keep this between us just this once.” Liz’s eyes widened to the size of saucers. “Sometimes Sergeant Major Evans can get a little carried away on her runs. I’ve been there,” he pinned her with a knowing stare.
“Thank you, sir,” Liz said in awe of the situation.
“Just don’t let it happen again, ok?”
“Yes, sir!”
“You’re excused,” he nodded toward the door and Liz didn’t need to be told twice. She saw Maria in the hall, questioning her silently. Liz smiled slightly and gave her a thumbs up. Maria let out the breath she had been holding and went back to work, feeling for her roommate.
*****************
As the day wore on, even Liz’s bones seemed to ache. Her whole body hurt and even walking around the office took a mighty effort. Her muscles felt like they had been torn apart and were slowing trying to reconstruct themselves back together. It was almost 12:00 and she was more than ready for lunch. As if reading her mind, she heard Maria walk up behind her.
“Lunch time, Parker! Chow hall?”
“Yes!” Liz didn’t hesitate. She was starving. The two walked out the door, and straight for Maria’s Jetta. “DeLuca, where’s your cover?” Liz asked, referring to the beret she was supposed to be wearing on her head.
“I left it in the room, don’t tell anyone,” Maria waved it off like it was no big deal.
Still, Liz couldn’t help it when a lesson was about to fly out of her mouth. “AR 670-1, DeLuca.”
“Yeah, yeah, enough with the regulations. Nobody will even notice. Besides, I’m gonna get it before we go to the chow hall.”
“You shouldn’t have left without it,” Liz scolded. But then, Liz was grateful for the stop at the barracks. She still needed a shower and she secretly wondered if she stank. Nobody at work had mentioned it.

Meanwhile...Evans’ Household
“What’d you do to her?!” Max demanded as soon as his mother walked in the door for her lunch break.
“Max...you’re home early,” Diane said, ignoring his question.
“Tell me!” Max’s fist slammed into the wall beside his mother of its own accord, putting a hole there. Diane startled, but quickly recovered, holding her head up.
“We went for a little run this morning, that’s all.”
“Bullshit,” Max said as he stomped away. He had to get back to school anyway. Whatever his mother was doing to Liz was putting him in enough pain just thinking about it.
“Oh, Max,” his mother called before he could leave.
“What?!”
“Meet me at the track outside the gym at 6,” she said cheerily.
“What for?” Max’s blood was boiling and he didn’t want to deal with her right now.
“Just do what I say.” Her answer was cryptic and Max knew he couldn’t disobey her, afraid for Liz’s benefit. Max didn’t answer his mother, he just left the house before he hit anything else. He would have to use that calming technique in the car on the way back to school.
*************
The end of the day couldn’t have come sooner for Liz. Her body felt bruised and battered from this morning’s activities and she just wanted to go home and sleep until tomorrow morning. Just as Liz walked to the front door, intent on locking it, she saw Diane headed straight for her, a gleam in the woman’s eyes. Liz froze, waiting for Diane to say something. She didn’t disappoint. “You didn’t think the day was over yet, did ya, Parker?” Diane smirked.
Liz didn’t say anything, she just followed Diane out to the parking lot where she was told to follow in her car. Diane drove to the barracks first. Liz got out of her car and walked up to Diane’s, looking at her through the open window.
“Go get your PT’s.” Liz sighed loudly when she was out of earshot of her superior. She went inside to get her exercise uniform from her room. She didn’t know if she could handle anything else. This day just wouldn’t end, and she couldn’t imagine it being any worse.
After changing, Liz followed Diane to the Special Forces track where they once again began to run, but this time, Diane was going to give this girl a piece of her mind.
Diane stopped their run and said to Liz, “Beat your face.”
Liz got down and started doing pushups, calling out the numbers every time she went back up. “1, Sergeant Major...2, Sergeant Major...3, Sergeant Major...”
But Diane didn’t want to hear her voice. “Shut up...just keep going.” Liz complied and continued to push. Diane had no idea what this girl was thinking. But she hadn’t once complained and lost her cool, or said anything at all for that matter. It was pissing Diane off. How long would it take to break her? “You little brats think you’re pretty slick, don’t you? Not breaking any legal laws. But you broke my law, Parker. Having sex with my son. Just what were you trying to prove? What were you trying to accomplish?”
Liz didn’t say anything, she just kept doing her pushups, looking straight ahead at the mountains.
“Are you in pain yet, Parker?” She was met with silence except for the occasional grunt as Liz continued to push. “I know it hurts. You may not want to admit it, but I know it does. Apparently, there isn’t much I can do to you legally. And god knows I don’t want this getting out. So I guess you’re just going to have to deal with me from now on.” Still nothing. She was a tough one.
Liz knew what her boyfriend’s mother wanted. She wanted Liz to give up, throw in the towel, cry like a baby. But it wasn’t gonna happen. Liz knew she could beat this, and she would. If it would bring her closer to Max, it didn’t matter what she had to go through. She was on her 35th pushup when Diane spoke again.
Liz’s arms were shaking terribly from the strain on her muscles. Diane could tell that she was bringing the girl to muscle failure, but she watched in awe as Liz managed to push on.
Diane ignored the small tug in her heart that told her this girl must really care for Max, and bent down next to Liz and spoke softly and menacingly. “Come on, Parker. I can make this go away. Nobody would ever have to know.” Liz refused to give up still. If this was a fight, she was in it for the long hall. Diane decided to try once more. “Is he really worth all this?” Diane’s teeth grinded together and she watched Liz stop her pushups to rest with her back arched high, the proper rest position. It was all Liz could do without just dropping to her belly.
Liz thought for a good minute about what Diane was offering. But she didn’t have to think long. She went down for another pushup and when she came up she said, her voice full of conviction, “44, Sergeant Major!”
Diane got up angrily. “Get up!” she yelled. Liz stood up at attention and waited for her next instructions. “Run to the gym we do PT at. I’ll meet you there.” On the outside, Liz showed no emotion, but on the inside, she was crying. It was a long run from here to that gym, and Liz had to jog there. Diane left to get her car and Liz began to run. ‘Was this day ever going to end?’ Liz wondered.

CHAPTER 18
AN: Before you read the next part, I’m gonna comment on some of your feedbacks. Don’t worry, it won’t give away the story.
As far as Diane’s comment about Max being worth it, I had no intentions of making it seem as if Diane was condescending her son in any way. I was just having her pose the question to Liz as if to ask Liz if she wants to pursue this relationship knowing what Diane can do to her. It was never meant to imply that Diane didn’t love Max.
And as for whatever Diane is doing being illegal, Emz, it’s really not because Diane isn’t going to tell anyone, and Liz has already proven that she isn’t going to tell anyone. So in reality, it can’t be wrong if nobody knows about it. Besides, I really don't think it's illegal.
And now I’m done, on with the show!
When Liz finally got to the track outside the gym, she saw Max, in a large t-shirt and a pair of long red gym shorts, his back to her. He was like a breath of fresh air and Liz stumbled over to him, her legs just a blob of jelly at that point.
Max had gotten here on time, just as his mother had requested, but he had been waiting here for nearly a half an hour. There were so many other better things he could be doing with his time, like calling Liz. Diane was currently in the gym filling up her water bottle. She had asked Max to wait for her. Max suddenly heard heavy panting behind him. He turned around to see what was going on and he saw her.
She looked battered, like she had just been through a war. She was sweating profusely and Max finally knew what her punishment had been. His mother was killing her!
Max ran to his love, who looked as if she was about to pass out. He wrapped her in his arms, holding her tightly, trying to shield her delicate body with his hard one.
Liz wrapped herself around him, needing his strength for the moment. She didn’t know where CSM Evans was and she didn’t care. She just wanted to disappear inside of the man she loved. She pulled on Max’s shirt, bring him to the ground with her. Her legs didn’t want to hold her body up any longer.
“God, baby, I’m so sorry. I can’t believe she...” Max couldn’t say anymore. Liz’s shoulders heaved as she cried into his chest.
The dam would not hold back the waterworks any longer. As soon as he had wrapped her in his strong arms, the tears just fell. Liz was hurting physically and mentally. Max’s mother was really upset about their relationship, but Liz was sure it was all a test. Diane wanted to know if Liz was serious enough about Max to endure the hardships. Diane wanted to know if Liz was strong enough.
Max couldn’t believe what his mother was doing. This was exactly what he hadn’t wanted to happen. And Liz was at the ass end of the deal. Max knew his punishment had yet to start, and he could deal with that. He was ready for whatever his mother threw at him, but he had not been ready for this. Liz didn’t deserve this. It was just plain cruel.
Max felt Liz’s crying subside, and he cupped her little face in his big hands, pushing her head up gently to look at him. “Are you okay?” he whispered. Liz nodded at him, offering just a slight smile before burying her head back into his chest. He stroked her damp head, trying to soothe her.
Little did they know, Diane was watching on from inside the door of the gym. Her head told her that it was wrong, but the romantic part of her heart told her that they loved each other. No matter. Once this was over, if they truly loved each other, nothing would change it. And if they didn’t, Diane had just done her son a favor.
Diane came back outside. The lovers didn’t even notice her as they continued to hold each other on the grass. Luckily, the place was practically empty. It was almost 6:30 and everyone was at home relaxing by then. Max saw his mother first and jumped up, pushing Liz behind him protectively, staring hard at the woman who gave birth to him.
“Why are you doing this to her?! Why are you punishing her? Punish me! She doesn’t deserve this!”
“That’s where you’re wrong, son. Look at yourself. I am punishing you,” was all Diane said with no further explanation. Max knew what she meant. He was in enough pain simply because Liz was. But he still wished it was more of a physical pain, if only to compensate for Liz's pain. “Now...I want you both to run around the track eight times.”
“8 times?! That’s two miles!” Max exclaimed.
“Don’t I know it,” Diane said without emotion. “Don’t worry, Max, you’ve got it easy. Maybe you should stick by Parker though. Make sure she doesn’t drop dead in the middle of it.”
Max watched Liz start running, even though he could tell it wasn’t easy for her. His heart ached for her, wanting to take her pain away. He ran up to her, taking her arm, trying to hold up her lithe frame. He ran with her slowly, wishing he could take away her anguish. They ran so slowly, it took them almost an hour to finish it. But finish it they did. When they finally got back to Diane, Liz collapsed on the grass, and Max handed her the water bottle. “Take small sips,” he advised gently as he rubbed her back.
Liz did as she was told. She was in more pain than she had ever imagined. Diane looked at the two of them together, trying not to listen to the beating heart inside of her body. “Max, go home. Liz, you’re excused.”
That wasn’t great for Liz. Her car was still parked three miles away. “Let me give you a ride,” Max told Liz.
“No! Max, go home!” Diane told him. She watched Liz nod her head at Max, and she ignored the death rays spilling from Max’s eyes as he trotted to his jeep and drove off. Diane took one last look at Liz and went to her own car, leaving Liz alone to get back.
After a few more minutes of sipping water, Liz got up and started the walk back to her car. She heard a car come up behind her and turned to look over her shoulder. A loud sigh rose from her chest as she saw Max’s jeep. He pulled up beside her. “Get in,” he said after he opened the passenger side door.
Liz eagerly got into the jeep and Max drove them back to her car. He parked in front of her car, seeing the PT field empty. “Baby, I’m sorry. I don’t even know what to say.”
“It’s okay, Max. It’s not your fault.”
“Are we gonna get through this?” Max asked painfully.
“We’d better,” Liz chuckled softly. “I don’t want this to all be for nothing.”
A half smile tugged at Max’s lips and he leaned over to give his love a thorough kiss, slipping his tongue delicately into her dry mouth. He rested his forehead against hers and looked deep into her eyes. “I love you,” he whispered against her lips.
“I love you, too.” Liz kissed him one more time, her fingers tunneling into his hair briefly, before reluctantly pulling back. They stared at each other for a few more moments, before Liz got out of the jeep and into her car, looking at Max one last time before driving back to the barracks.
*************
When Max got home, his mother and father were at the dinner table. “Max, sit down,” Diane told him.
“Yes, Ma’am,” Max said venomously as he plopped down in an empty chair.
“I know you gave Parker a ride back to her car,” Diane said.
“Her name...is Liz,” Max said her name clearly so they wouldn’t forget it.
“I must say that I’m a little shocked at how chivalrous you can be. I can’t remember the last time I saw it from you.” Max picked at the wooden table with his thumbnail, his jaw clenched.
“Maybe that’s because you don’t give me any reason to be,” Max spat out.
Diane ignored him for the moment. “I also notice that you’re not throwing things and you haven’t hit your father yet.”
“That was an accident!” Max couldn’t believe they were still hanging on to that. It was over a year ago. He had gotten upset about the fight he had been in earlier with some kid from school who didn’t know how to keep his mouth shut. He had thrown his book bag down on the couch and when he had turned around a little too quickly he had elbowed his father in the eye. Phillip’s eye was black for a month. Ever since then, the old man gets nervous around his own son sometimes. But it was an accident. Max would never purposely hit his own father...except for when he had called Liz a slut. Max would have gladly decked him for that comment.
“Your father told me this has been going on for three months now. I know that the two of us haven’t exactly been around much these last few years...”
“Try ten,” Max mumbled.
“But I want that to change,” Diane continued. “I’ve only got a few years left before I retire. I just wish we could be friends again.”
“I don’t wanna be your friend! I wanna be your son! You either treat me like I’m six years old or like I’m a maniac! I’m an adult, goddamnit!!” Max slammed his fist on the table making both his parents jump at his callous words.
Nobody said another word for a few minutes, both parents thinking about what he had just said. In Max’s mind, he was trying to let it blank out, trying to breathe evenly, trying to picture Liz’s beautiful face. But that posed a whole different problem. Picturing her face didn’t stop at just her face. He pictured her whole body suddenly...nude...riding him. “Damnit!” he grumbled. His parents looked up at him to see what was wrong. Max just stood quickly and turned his back on them. “I’m going to take a shower,” was all he said before rushing to the bathroom for a very long, very cold shower. He knew he probably shouldn’t be thinking about her that way, considering the situation they were in, but try telling that to Little Max.
*****************
When Max got out of the shower, his phone rang. "Hello?" he asked when he picked it up.
"Hey, Max," came the response.
"Hey, Tess...what's up?"
"Are we getting together tonight to study?" She asked hopefully.
Max blew out a breath. There was so much going on right now that he hadn't even been thinking about science. He was about ready to just blow Tess and the study session off, but he remembered Liz asking him to pass the class. "Yeah, but can I come over there?"
"Sure! There won't be anybody here?" she asked rather than stated.
"It's okay. I just gotta get outta this house."
"Okay! See ya soon," Tess said.
"Bye," Max hung up. He went upstairs to change for the study session. Hopefully, tomorrow wouldn't turn out anything like today.

AN: Sorry, guys, this one's kinda short, but I hope you enjoy it anyway. Actually, no, you probably won't enjoy it. I retract my last statement. But please read it anyway.
CHAPTER 19
Max knocked on Tess’s door twenty minutes after hanging up with her. When he had told her that he would come over, he hadn’t really been thinking about anything but getting out of the “House of Horror.” Now that he was here, he wasn’t so sure this had been the best idea.
Tess opened the door with her sugary sweet smile and Max couldn’t help but notice how Liz’s smile was so much brighter without her even trying. “Hey, Max,” Tess greeted him.
“Hey.” Max walked past her into the house. It was a pleasant setting. It was very clean and it smelled nice. He turned around quickly. “So where...” he was cut off by Tess’s face. He had turned around just as she was coming towards him and they were now less than an inch away from each other. He was too stunned to move at the moment. When he saw Tess’s eyes dart to his lips he quickly backed away from her. He cleared his throat. “Where should we study?” he asked without looking at her, hoping that she hadn’t gotten the wrong idea.
Tess seemed to recover quickly. “Oh, well we can...study right here,” she suggested, pointing to the living room they were currently standing in. Max smiled awkwardly and moved to the couch to sit down. Tess followed his lead and sat down next to him.
Max put his book bag down and rifled through it for his book. He took a quick look at Tess as she was also pulling her book out. When her eyes met his, Max quickly buried his head into his book. Max didn’t know what the hell he was doing, but he needed to get this study session over with soon.
***************
Liz practically fell down on top of her bed when she got out of the shower. Maria wasn’t home, or at least Liz didn’t think she was. Liz needed to close her eyes, they were so heavy, and her body felt limp. As soon as her head had hit the pillow, she was out like a light.
*******************
2 Hours Later...
“Max, that’s awesome! You’re doing great!” Tess flung herself into his arms and Max hugged her back, grinning from ear to ear, proud of himself and her teaching. Tess pulled back still smiling, but not taking her arms from around his neck. “See, it’s not that hard. I’m saying the same things Mrs. Connelly says, but for some reason you don’t listen in class,” Tess laughed at him.
“I don’t like her,” Max joked back. They laughed at his jest. Then, the jokes stopped, but the closeness was still there, and Max had to put an end to it. He withdrew his eyes from hers, embarrassed, and let go of her just before his cell phone rang. He glanced at the caller ID and saw it was his mother. He excused himself to the kitchen to take the call.
Max explained to his mother that he was with a girl from school and they were studying. She didn’t buy it though and actually wanted to talk to the girl! Max politely asked Tess to talk to his mom. Tess was confused, but got on the phone anyway. She assured Diane of the same thing Max had already told her, that the two of them were just studying.
Diane had one more question before she would let her son hang up though.
“Tess, huh?” Diane asked, amused.
Max couldn’t believe the nerve of this woman. He spat back into the phone softly so Tess wouldn’t hear, “Don’t get any ideas.” He quickly pressed the END button and went back to the living room.
When Max reemerged from the kitchen, Tess and Max decided to wrap up the study session. Tess turned to him. “What was that about? Doesn’t your mom trust you?”
“Not right now,” Max replied bitterly. “Look, I better go. It’s getting late, and Mom’s gonna kick my ass if I don’t show up soon.” Max chuckled.
“Okay! Well...um...when do you want to get together again?”
“I’m not sure,” Max said as he picked up his bag and flung it over his shoulder. “Call me okay?” He found himself in that position again where he was looking into her blue eyes. They were like ice, he thought. He also found himself in the position where she was staring back.
He saw the moment change for Tess and backed up again before he could do anything he’d regret, mentally scolding himself for being a complete dick! “Bye,” was all he said as he went out the door.
Tess watched him leave half-heartedly. She closed the door behind him, leaned her head against the wood, and asked herself, “Is he ever going to kiss me?” She sighed and decided to go to bed.
*****************
Max was on his way home when he checked the clock. It was only 10:30, and his mom had told him to be back at 12. He had lied to Tess just to get out of there, but now he didn’t want to go home. After the encounter with Tess, his body had yet to cool down. He was pissed off with himself that he actually found Tess attractive. And he was even more pissed off with himself that he had probably just led the poor girl on.
Suddenly, without really needing to think about it, he cut a u-ey in the middle of the deserted road and sped off, knowing exactly where he needed to be at the moment. Somewhere he could wash the scent of blonde off of him. Somewhere he could bathe in brunette.
*****************
He sat on her window sill watching her breath evenly for a little while. She looked so peaceful, and so much better than she had just hours ago. She was the most beautiful thing in the world.
“Aren’t you gonna come in?” Liz asked him with her eyes still closed.
Max sat in shock for a second. “I thought you were...”
“I’m a soldier. It’s my job to know if someone’s watching me.” She finally opened her eyes for him. He smiled and moved to her, laying himself over her. “What are you doing here?” she whispered.
“I was studying tonight.”
“Good,” she told him, happy he was still remembering her request.
“But I was with Tess.” Liz was too tired to comment on it. She sighed heavily.
“Why did you tell me that?”
“Well, the last time I was studying with Tess, you came over and I had to calm you down.” He quirked a small smile at her jealousy.
“Yeah, and then we got caught,” Liz replied bitterly, but not too bitterly.
“Considering that won’t happen again,” Max continued, “I was kinda hoping...that you might need me to calm you down again.” Liz couldn’t help the smile as she listened to his flirting.
“Ya know...I’m really tired,” she teased.
“I know.”
“And I’m in pain.”
“I know....and I wanna take it away. Let me take it away,” his voice was a mere whisper against her lips. She wrapped her arms around his neck.
“Okay,” she whispered back before sealing their lips together.

CHAPTER 20
AN: Don’t get so aggro with Max, guys. He’s a teenage boy. Sometimes he thinks with the wrong parts of his anatomy. He wouldn’t be human (or straight for that matter) if he didn’t find other girls attractive once in a while. Not to mention, he’s vulnerable right now, and Tess just happens to be there. On with the story.
It had been two days since Diane had started this little game of hers. The day after Max had come over to comfort Liz, Diane had been just as brutal with the PT, and Liz had been tired, but for some reason, Diane hadn’t continued the torture this morning. Not that Liz wasn’t happy about it, but she had no idea of why Diane hadn’t grabbed her this morning for PT. She assumed that maybe Max had somewhat gotten through to his mother, and she wanted to kiss him all over for it. She remembered the conversation she and Max had the night he was with her.
Max had made love to her slowly and gently, not wanting to cause her any more pain. When they had finished, Max rolled them over so that she was lying on his chest.
“I can’t stay, ya know. Mom wants me home by twelve,” he said regretfully.
“It’s ok. I knew you wouldn’t be able to stay. But it was still worth it, even if only for a little while.”
Max smiled at his angel. “I love you.” He realized he had told her that before, but this time, the words came out more raw.
Liz lifted her eyes to meet his, hearing all of the emotions going through that statement. “I love you too, Max. Don’t worry. We’ll get through this.”
He hugged her and kissed the top of her head gently. Then, he had to get up and make his exit, and leave her alone again. He didn’t want to...God how he had wanted to stay with her the whole night, but he knew it wasn’t possible, and so did she. He left through the window once again, with a smile on his face, and Liz fell back asleep, smiling herself.
“Okay, so what’s been goin on?” Maria pulled Liz from her thoughts. The two of them had the lunch counter together. Maria sat down in the seat next to Liz, wanting an answer to what had been happening with Diane, who had pulled her out of PT two days in a row. Liz hadn’t mentioned it yet, and Maria, being who she was, was burning with curiosity.
Liz gave up trying to elude her roommate. “Nothing. Command Sergeant Major Evans just wanted me to know what I was getting myself into.” Liz said with disdain.
“She’s been working you hard, huh?” The girls kept their voices down, not wanting anyone important to know what was going on. Their heads were slanted together and they were whispering. It felt almost as if they were discussing alien conspiracies or something.
“Yeah.” Liz stopped for a moment before continuing in confusion. “But not today for some reason. I don’t get it. She pulls me outta PT two days in a row to give me hell, most of the time finding every nice possible way to call me a slut, and then suddenly, today, she doesn’t show. I don’t know what’s going on.”
“Well, maybe Max asked her to stop.”
“I was thinking the same thing, but you didn’t see her with Max and me the other day. Max asked her to back off then too, and she showed absolutely no mercy. I know she has something planned for me but I don’t know what it is. And it’s driving me absolutely crazy trying to figure it out.” Liz sighed.
“Well, when was the last time you saw Max. I mean, has he said anything to you about it?”
“No. The last time I even talked to him was when he came to my room two nights ago. But we didn’t do much talking,” Liz blushed and Maria smiled wistfully.
“You guys are so perfect together. I’m so sorry you’re going through this.” Liz shook her head and was about to respond until they heard someone clear their throat behind them. The girls turned around with absolute dread on their features, wondering how much of their conversation had been overheard and by whom.
Liz was almost relieved when she turned around to face Diane, but at the same time, the sparkle in Diane’s eyes told her that this woman just got herself some very valuable information.
*********************
Meanwhile, at Summer School...
“And now you’re excused for lunch,” Mrs. Connelly told the class. Everyone began to file out when Max heard the teacher speak a familiar phrase. “Max, Tess...could you two come up here a minute?” Max realized all too quickly that she wasn’t looking at him with disdain in her eyes, and her voice hadn’t been like the screeching chalkboard he was used to hearing, but was actually soft and gentle. He turned a curious eye to his tutor. Tess just smiled brightly at him, as if she had been expecting this.
When the two reached the teacher’s desk, she never took her eyes off of Max as she went on to say, “I just wanted to congratulate you, Tess. You’ve done a fine job with him. And Max, here’s the results to your first test under Tess’s wing.” She handed him the sheet of paper with questions and answers on it, but all he saw was the numbers on top. “I got a 97...I got a 97...” Both Tess and the teacher smiled happily at him as he continued on. “I got a 97! I got a 97! Tess...you gave me a 97!” He couldn’t help it. He picked her up and twirled her around, sporting a kool-aid smile.
“No, no, no...you gave yourself a 97. You did great, Max.”
“I knew you had it in you, Mr. Evans.” He turned to the teacher he hated the most.....and kissed her, hard! “Mr. Evans, I don’t think that...”
“You know what? I’ve got one final exam left to go, and as long as Tess keeps helping me, I will never have to take this class again. And it’ll be beautiful!” Tess grabbed Max’s hand, pulling him away from the confused teacher and the classroom, apologizing silently to their teacher.
Max literally flew through the empty hallway. “YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!” was all he could think to say at that point. Then he realized that he wasn’t alone.
“Wow...never thought I’d ever see you that happy. I’m really...really proud of you, Max.” Tess stepped closer to him, as if to hug him, but Max quickly stepped back.
“I’m with someone.” The words just flew out of his mouth without another natural thought.
Tess, however, felt like her heart just been crushed inside her chest. “Oh.”
Max saw the helpless dejection and wanted to make her feel better, but knew he couldn’t. “I’m sorry if I misled you in any way. I didn’t mean to hurt you.”
Tess quickly recomposed herself, sniffling back the tears that stung her eyes. “No, I’m sorry. Of course you have a girlfriend. Now I just feel like a fool.”
Max came and put an arm around her. “You’re not a fool. You’re a great girl...and he’s out there for you somewhere. He just isn’t me. I’m sorry.”
Tess looked into his beautiful eyes. “Yeah, but it would’ve been nice if I had found him in you. But then, we want a lot of things, don’t we?”
“Yes, we do,” Max said softly, rubbing her back, knowing those words held a double meaning for him.

Meanwhile, Back At Base...............(hee-hee, I’ve just always wanted to write that)
“Come with me, both of you,” was all Diane said as she led them toward the back office to meet with CPT Bruno. When they got in the door, Diane said, “I found two more for you.” When the Captain looked up, he was thoroughly confused as to why the CSM had brought these particular girls into his office with Michael Guerin standing over to the side. Maria and Liz were even more confused when Captain Bruno finally decided speak despite his gaping mouth. But soon enough, he had taken better control of his military bearing.
“Sorry for staring at the two of you, but I had no idea either of you would volunteer for Iraq.”

CHAPTER 21
AN: Okay, I wrote that last part while I was half asleep and too late realized that I had forgotten to throw some background information in there. Hopefully, this part will clear all that up.
“WHAT?!” Maria couldn’t help herself. She had to scream for just that brief moment, startling everyone in the room.
“DeLuca,” Liz whispered, knowing everyone could hear her.
Maria lowered her voice. “No, I mean...” and then her voice went up again, “WHAT?!”
Liz pushed Maria out of the office, smiling nervously at her superior officer and Michael who were confused as to why Maria was acting that way. “Excuse us for a second, Sir.”
Liz got Maria into the bathroom so that Maria could vent properly. “This is bullshit, Parker! Who the hell does she think she is?! She can’t do this to us! She absolutely cannot do this to us!” Liz just stood back, unmoving from her spot in the corner. Maria thought she looked way too calm. “Aren’t you gonna say anything?!”
“What’s there to say, DeLuca? Don’t you remember like a month ago when CPT Bruno asked for volunteers because we needed some finance soldiers over there?”
“Yeah...and SGT Guerin was the only one who volunteered. We didn’t!” Maria told her remembering that day.
“Exactly. They also said if they didn’t get enough volunteers they were just gonna pick names out of a hat. What do you want me to do? This is completely within their rights.” Liz’s voice remained down, though her knees betrayed her as they shook uncontrollably. Liz always knew that war was a possibility considering her job, but she never thought she’d have to go simply because of a relationship she was having with a boy.
“You have to get your ass in there and tell Captain Bruno that this is a mistake!” Maria pointed to the door.
“I can’t,” Liz said softly.
“What do you mean you can’t...” Maria would have continued, but Liz cut her off, yelling louder than Maria’s ever heard her yell.
“Because then I’d have to give an explanation!! I cannot go in there and tell my commanding officer why this has happened!” Maria sighed loudly, tears leaking out of her eyes.
“I can’t go to war, Parker,” Maria whispered brokenly. Maria was so upset that Liz wrapped her arms around her.
“DeLuca, listen to me. Even if we don’t volunteer, the Sergeant Major has the power to pick whoever she wants to go. If they don’t have enough soldiers for the deployment, they have to make decisions. I’m just sorry you got dragged into it.”
“Oh, this isn’t your fault, Parker,” Maria said as she wiped her tears away. Then an idea occurred to her. “Call Max. Tell him what’s going on. Tell him to make it stop.”
“Oh yeah, let me get right on that. It’s not gonna work,” Liz said sarcastically.
“I’m sorry, I’m just running out of ideas here!” Maria spat back at her. A loud knock sounded on the bathroom door just then.
“DeLuca! Parker!” It was Michael. “Come on, we have some things we need to go over!” The girls quickly composed themselves and left the latrine to deal with this situation.
*************************
Max had gone to Kyle’s house after school and came home around six to find the house empty. There was a note on the refrigerator though.
Max,
Went to an FRG Meeting. Mom’s working late. Dinner’s in the blue container.
Dad
Max sighed loudly, throwing the note into the trash and searched the fridge for the tupperware his father was referring to. When he found it, he threw it in the microwave so that he could eat. Just as he was pulling the hot dish from the microwave his cell phone started buzzing.
“Hello?” he asked when he answered without looking at the caller ID.
“Max?”
“Hey, baby doll, what’s up?” Max smiled, still excited about the great news he had for her.
“Can I see you please?” Liz whispered desperately.
“What’s wrong?” Max went on alert immediately.
“Please,” was all she said.
“I’ll be right there.” Max didn’t need to be asked twice. He hopped in the jeep and sped straight to his love. When he climbed through the window, he saw Liz and Maria crying on her bed. He went straight for her, wrapping her in his strong arms. “Baby, what happened?”
Liz was crying into his chest, and for the moment, she was so glad he was here, but she couldn’t speak. She couldn’t say anything. Max stroked his hands down her arms and her back before turning to Maria without letting go of Liz. “What happened, Maria?”
Maria, on the other hand, had no problem telling him exactly what was wrong. “That bitch, otherwise known as your mother, has put us on the list to deploy!”
“Deploy where?” Max asked in shock.
“Iraq,” Maria said without hesitation.
“What?!” He felt Liz shake harder against his body.
“That’s what I said!” Maria responded.
Max looked back at Liz, cupping her face in his hands and urging her to look him in the eyes. “Baby? I don’t understand.”
“You didn’t know about this?” she whispered brokenly.
“Fuck no! I’m gonna fuckin kill her!” Max held Liz tighter, unwilling to let her go anywhere and at the same time trying to breathe. This was getting absurd. His mother had no right to do this. How dare she even try. When he had cleared his head a bit, he looked down at Liz once more. “Can she do this? Legally?” Max asked her gently.
Liz looked into his gorgeous orbs and nodded her head slowly, making Max close his eyes against the tears springing forth. He took one arm and laced it over Maria’s shoulders too, pulling her close as well, and allowing them both to cry on him. He had to find out exactly what was going on. Because he refused to allow his mother to send Liz to war. But even as he swore this to himself, he honestly couldn’t predict the outcome.
