Destiny Finds You... (AU, M/L, Teen) Ch9-07/31 [WIP]

Post by Robyn »

Title: Destiny Finds You In Strange Ways
Couples: M/L
Rating: Teen for now
Disclaimer: I do not own anything Roswellian. The Roswell characters are the property of Melinda Metz, brought to our viewing pleasure by Jason Katims.
Summary: Liz meets the guy of her dreams in an unlikely place, and ends up with a bad case of seemingly unrequited love.

Chapter 1:

"I'd ask you if you met any hots guys, but it was brainiac science camp, so obviously not." laughed Maria, as she hugged her friend. Liz smiled at Maria's teasing, she had just gotten back from a week long science camp, and Maria was taking every opportunity to tease her.

"I don't know, a little chemistry, add some biology, and who knows what could happen." chimed in Alex, walking up towards them to take his turn to hug Liz. "Glad your back, our summer of adventure can now begin."

Liz looked dubiously from Maria to Alex and knew that they had some devious plan up their sleaves. "What ever you guys are planning, I want nothing to do with it." "Oh come on, party popper." chimed in Alex. "No," replied Liz, laughing at Alex's puppy dog face, and the pathetic doggy whine that was slowly growing louder.

Liz picked up a paper off one of the tables and threatened to disappline Alex with it. She brought it down on his head and then gave him a good petting, roughing up the new gel hairstyle he had was experimenting with. This sent Maria into a fit of giggles, giving Liz the opportunity to sneak up to her room to finish unpacking her bags. She pulled out her camera, and smiled to herself, she would prove Maria wrong about the hot guys.

She put her clothes away and then started taking out the various papers and some notes she had taken. She looked down at the scribbled handwriting next to her own and smiled inwardly, as she flicked on her computer.

She hit the add a new contact button and carefully typed in his user name. She then proceeded to add everyone else on the list, she couldn't be accused of having a crush on him if she added everyone. Liz rolled her eyes looking at her increased contact list. She knew she would never talk to most of these people, and just for a pointless crush.

Liz mentally admonished herself, he lived in another state and had spent the almost the whole camp hanging out with another girl. This was stupid. But then she rememberd how she felt the few times there eyes had met, how she had never felt so alive.

She looked at the pile of papers that were now sitting on her lap and she pulled out the camp picture they had given everyone. There were only 25 campers, "the best and the brightest" the man had flattered them all the first day they arrived. "Trying to suck up so we pick their school" the girl beside her had muttered. Liz had been sitting with a small group of girls who had all befriended each other the moment they met. She remembered clearly, because that was the moment she first layed eyes on him.

She had gotten a chance to know everyone fairly well, but she wished she had gotten to know him better. They had barely talked, but that didn't keep her from thinking "he's perfect for me, and I'll never see him again." as she drove away earlier that day.

End Chapter 1

Okay, this chapter is really short, but I came to a good ending so I had to stop. :>

Chapter 2: Destiny Finds You In Strange Ways

Post by Robyn »

Chapter 2:

“So you finally have the proof?” asked Maria as Liz walked in with her newly developed photographs in her hand. “I do.” replied Liz proudly waving the package in front of Maria’s skeptical eyes. “So, by all means, go ahead and show me your dream nerd.”

Liz ignored that comment and took the pictures out of their envelope and handed them one by one to Maria. “Okay, so they aren’t totally ugly.” Maria confessed. “But nothing to get so excited about.” Liz just smiled at Maria’s comments and finally began passing her the one’s she had been saving till last. “So this is him?” asked Maria, even though she could tell by the slight blush on Liz’s face. “Well, he certainly is, um….”

Maria had a funny look on her face and Liz looked at her questioningly. “What, you don’t think he’s hot?” asked Liz, trying not to sound too disappointed. Maria smiled before replying, “Oh, I think he’s hot alright, it’s just, he looks familiar. Like I know him from somewhere.”

“Really?” Liz didn’t doubt that Maria may have met him. She and her mother traveled all over the country and had settled down in Roswell less than two years ago.

“Well, I have his e-mail, you could e-mail him and ask if he knows you.” offered Liz. Maria smiled. They both knew that this was just an excuse for Liz to e-mail him, as she’d been too shy to start even an online conversation with him. “I think I will.” agreed Maria, playing to Liz’s hopes.

“But first, show me the rest of those pictures.” Liz handed them over to a curious Maria who took one look at them and smirked. “Why are you sitting next to a guy you say you hardly know with your head on his shoulder?” She paused for a second, and added while trying to hold back her laugher, “And why is your mouth wide open?”

Liz turned bright red before answering. She had wanted to see that photo so badly, only to be disappointed to find that the tilt of her neck had automatically opened her mouth, making it seem as if she was trying to give him a massive hicky.

“Well?” prompted Maria, raising her eyebrows at Liz. “Oh, we were the last three of our group of friends to leave and our friend wanted a picture of us. And for some reason told us to pretend we were asleep…It’s no big deal really” explained Liz. Maria gave her a funny look and then added, “And I’m sure you were more than happy to comply.”

Liz smiled at Maria’s comment. She had been more than happy to comply. She had merely laid her head back on the couch pretending to be asleep when she had felt his head lean against her shoulder. That action had thrilled her more than she would like to admit.

“So, this guy’s name is Max right?” asked Maria as she looked at Liz’s computer and clicked on his name.

“Yeah, that’s the one.” asked Liz, carefully watching Maria to make sure she didn’t get any smart ideas into her head. Maria opened Liz’s inbox and began to type the following:

Hi Max,

At that moment Liz’s mother called from downstairs, “Liz honey, we need to use the phone, could you go offline for a few seconds please?”

Maria clicked on the disconnect button and looked at the e-mail. “How about a practice one?” and immediately began typing.

Dear Max,
My name is Maria Deluca, I’m the best friend of one Elizabeth Parker who you had the utmost pleasure to meet last week at nerd… err.. Science Camp. She was showing me pictures of her fellow overachievers and she happened to have a few stud pictures of you. As I was admiring them, I thought to myself, I know this boy from somewhere. But perhaps that’s only in my dreams. Perhaps only in Liz’s.

At this point Liz grabbed the keyboard from Maria and typed the following:

Hey, this is Liz. And don’t mind anything that Maria says. She saw your picture and got excited. It’s been awhile since she last had a man in her life.

Maria stole the keyboard back from Liz.

But not quite as long as my pal Liz here. She’s a bit out of practice. The last guy she had a crush on said Hi to her in class one day and she begin planning their wedding the next day.

Liz once again regained control of the keyboard.

Maria just doesn’t understand that sometimes things actually can work with a subtle hello. I told her to try it once but she prefers the throwing herself at the boy technique. In fact last week I caught her, yes, I saw you Maria, actually dropping her pencil in front of her crush. Only instead of giving him the view, they both reached for the pencil at the same time and he ended up with a mild concussion.

Maria rolled her eyes at Liz, and pulled the keyboard into her lap away from Liz.

Well, that’s enough about that, but do tell me if my name is familiar to you. If not maybe it will be someday.
XOXOX,
Maria

“Maria, there’s no way I’m letting you send that.” protested Liz as Maria reconnected to the internet. Maria was still holding the keyboard in her lap away from Liz. Liz finally managed to snag the keyboard from Maria, but only because she had let go to grab the mouse and click the send button.

“Maria!” protested Liz. “He’ll think I’m a crazy person.”

“So? I think you’re a crazy person and I still love you” joked Maria. Liz could tell Maria was trying to help her, but she half suspected Maria wanted her to forget about this guy more than she actually wanted her to get to know him better. And she was probably right. This was her summer before senior year, it was no time to be caught up on some guy she would never see again.

Just then Liz’s attention was drawn to the screen. “Oh no, he’s online.”

Hey, sorry for neglecting this fic for awhile, but I started another and got wrapped up in it. Here's another part, sorry it's so short. Hopefully I will have a longer part up this weekend.

Chapter 3:

“Maybe he doesn’t check his e-mail?” Maria suggested, looking at the panic stricken Liz. “Oh come on, lighten up, it’s not like you’ll be seeing him again.”

Liz had to admit that Maria had a point, but she didn’t want Max to think she was some crazy girl stalking him or some such thing. But so far he didn’t seem to be messaging her. She wasn’t quite sure whether she wanted him to or not. And then it happened.

Max says:Hello?
Liz says: Hi Max. Sorry about the weird message, my crazy friend just thought you looked familiar.
Max says: That’s okay. It was pretty funny actually.

“I can’t believe you told him that he should hog tie me.” laughed Liz, after they had finished taking to Max for almost two hours.
“Well, he’s good looking and has a sense of humour too, but that doesn’t change the fact that he’s too far away to start anything with.” added Maria, bringing Liz back to Earth.
“I know that Maria.” asserted Liz, “It’s just, he’s so perfect. I swear, it’s almost like I ordered him out of a catalogue. But, you’re right, he’s too far away. Besides, he doesn’t like me that way. He spent his whole time with this other girl Tess.”

“Good, cuz I had someone in mind for you a little closer to home.” smiled Maria, obviously dying to play matchmaker.
“Sounds good.” said Liz, agreeing just because she knew if she didn’t Maria would accuse her of being hung up on Max. Which she obviously wasn’t.

~Eight Months Later~

Liz says: I can’t believe that grade 12 is half over already.
Max says: Me neither, time seems to be going so quickly. Did you get all your applications done?
Liz says: Yeah, I finished them last week.
Max says: Yeah, me too, I’m just waiting for one more reference letter for my last one though.

Liz smiled to herself, she and Max had applied to a lot of the same universities and maybe if the went to the same one…. But she would let that go. There was no way she was going to follow a guy to university, she would go wherever was best for her. But over the last eight months she and Max had spent hours talking to each other. And if she had thought he was perfect before, she now knew it. They seemed to be on the same wavelength for so many things.

“Stop it Liz.” she admonished herself out loud. So they were good friends now, they were still miles apart and being totally in love with Max wasn’t helping her. It was her grade 12 year and the few guys she had accepted dates from never held her attention. She couldn’t help comparing them to him, or feeling almost like she was cheating on him.

Max says: I had a date the other day, and I ended up leaving her alone to go play with my friends. She basically told me to though. I guess I didn’t make a very good impression.

Liz smiled to herself, she and Max had started comparing dating horror stories with each other. It felt good knowing that his love life seemed to be in arrest too, but it hurt that he didn’t even realize that maybe his dating escapades weren’t exactly her idea of an enjoyable conversation.

Liz says: Ha. I don’t think there was much chemistry there. Don’t feel too bad though, on my last date I dropped a spoonful of spaghetti on my dates lap!
Max says: I hope you didn’t mean to.
Liz says: Not consciously anyway.

Liz looked at the clock, 1 a.m and they were still talking strong. The spent so many nights chatting like this, and they always left her feeling so happy inside, but so alone at the same time.

Destiny Find You In Strange Ways: Chapter 4

Post by Robyn »

Thanks everyone so much for your comments. I’m just going to take a second to answer some questions because I’m not sure if I will get around to it in the story at all, or not for awhile and I don’t want to leave everyone confused till then.

Max and Tess:
Max and Tess have kept in contact as well. Tess lives closer to Max than Liz, but still too far away for them to have a good dating situation.

Max having Liz pictures:
So far he just has the picture that they all were given of everyone at the camp.

Max’s POV:
You’re going to have to wait to find out what Max is thinking. I really want this to be a Liz centric story, so if she’s confused, you are too. :>

As for the jumping ahead 8 months, well, that was just to get to the good part of the story while giving you the idea that they have been talking for awhile and really have a good friendship developed. Just to recap they met in the summer after grade 11 and now are it’s February of their grade 12 year.

I have a request of you guys, if you have one of those internet questionnaires, you know the kind that make you tell your opinion of the other person, could you please message me a blank copy. I would love to work one of those into my story but I think it would work better if it was genuine and I didn’t make it up myself. If one of you feel like making it up though, feel free. Thanks!

Chapter 4:

“I hate Valentine’s Day.” grumbled Maria, sitting down beside Liz and Alex at their usual table in the cafeteria.
“Me too.” agreed Liz. She couldn’t help thinking of the conversation she had with Max last night.

~
Max says: It’s my grade 12 year, I should be out there taking risks.
Liz says: Yeah, it’s a time to be doing things, and getting to know new people.
Max says: I think I will ask out Helen then. What do you think?
Liz says: I think you should go for it.
~

“What’s put you in such a bad mood? You don’t usually get this way till the end of the day when you realize that Prince Charming really isn’t going to come along.” joked Maria.
“I gave Max the ‘go for it speech’ last night about dating some bimbo.”
“Why would you do that? You’re practically in love with him.”
“Because, I can’t just say, Max, don’t date her, you should be pathetic and alone pinning for me, cuz that’s what I’m doing for you.”

“Wait a minute,” piped up Alex. “He asked you about dating this girl?”
“Yeah.” replied Liz, not thinking much of it.
“Did you ever consider that maybe he only asked you to see if you would care or not? I mean, from what you say, I don’t think people who are just friends material regularly stay up talking to each other for all hours of the night.”
“Thanks Alex, but I’m not the only one he’s talking to.” Liz frowned to herself. Oh well, at least this way Tess wasn’t getting him either.

“Well, Liz, how about we go strut our stuff tonight at the singles party.”
“Huh?” I asked Maria, her eyes beginning to glow with excitement.
“You know, the one Holly holds every year for all the single people on Valentine’s. I’ve heard it’s the perfect place to hook up.”
“I don’t want to hook up with someone Maria.”
“Ah come on Liz, a little making out at a party, doesn’t that sound like fun?”
“Not to me.” I replied, Maria should know that sort of thing wasn’t me.
“Okay, well then, next time you and Max talk you can tell him you were sitting home on the computer on Valentine’s day while he was asking out some bimbo.”

~
Liz looked at the skirt and top Maria had lent her to wear to the party that night and wondered where the rest of it was. “Maria, there’s no way I’m putting this on.” she yelled from Maria’s bathroom.
“Liz, it’s the only clothes I’m lending you. So it’s either that hot get-up, or the sweatpants you came over here in.”

Liz reluctantly squirmed herself inside the tiny skirt and pulled the shirt over herself. She had to admit she looked good as she looked in the mirror. She opened the door and slowly walked out to Maria.
“Liz, you look awesome. You’ll be able to pick up any guy you want at this party.”

Liz rolled her eyes. The only problem was she didn’t want any of the guys at the party, the only guy she wanted was at a Valentine’s dance, probably asking his date out at this moment. “Anyway, we were supposed to pick Alex up 20 minutes ago so we better get this show on the road.”

Alex was sitting on a trash can on the side of the curb when they arrived.
“It’s about time.” he said, jumping up and opening the door of Maria’s car. “Woah…” he blurted out when he saw Liz. “Ms. Parker, you clean up real nice.”
~

“Wow, there’s a lot of hearts.” observed Alex as they walked into Holly’s house. “And is that the Dirty Dancing soundtrack that’s playing? Are you girls sure you’ll be able to pick up guys here?” he asked skeptically.
“You know the Dirty Dancing soundtrack?” Liz teased Alex playfully.
“Maria forced me to watch it with her.” he defended himself.
“Don’t listen to Alex Liz, he wanted to watch it, and of course they’ll be guys here. I mean, wherever a group of depressed girls gather there’s bound to be a group of guys trying to get lucky.”
“That’s why I’m here.” asserted Alex, and both Liz and Maria gave him dirty looks. “Man, why don’t I have any guy friends?”

Liz and Maria both took Alex’s arms and pulled him into the living room where the party was in full swing. “There’s love potion Liz.” teased Maria, gesturing to the punch bowl. Maria had been dying to see Liz drunk for as long as they had known each other. “Bring it on.” replied Liz, and Maria’s eyes gleamed happily. “Liz, are you sure?” asked Alex. He didn’t want Liz to do this just because she had a bad day, plus he didn’t feel up to looking out for both Liz and Maria tonight. “I don’t want to be babysitter for both of you.” Maria glared at Alex, “I’ll stay sober to make sure she’s okay.” Alex smiled back, “Just because you’re not drunk, doesn’t mean I still don’t have to look out for you.”

Maria disappeared into the room to get a glass of punch and came back with one handing it to Liz. Liz looked at the cup and thought of Max. Here’s to your new relationship she thought to herself as she drank down the punch.
~

“Is Liz Parker drunk?” asked Kyle, walking over to where Maria and Alex were talking to a very giggly Liz. “I’d never thought I’d see the day.”
“Me neither,” replied Maria, as Liz wandered back to the punch bowl.
“Maybe we should cut her off after this one.” suggested Alex, and Maria nodded in agreement.

“Marcus, how are you?” asked Liz. She had biology with Marcus 2nd period and she had always had the inkling that maybe he was into her. He wasn’t very bright, but he did have a nice body. Sure, Max had brains and brawn, but he wasn’t here, and a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush. Or something like that.

“I’m good now.” replied Marcus, smiling at his luck. Liz Parker looked hotter than usual tonight and was actually talking to him. She had always seemed like one of those unattainable brainy chicks, or he would have tried his luck with her long ago.

“That’s good. Maria says making out in the corner is fun. What do you think?”
“I think your friend Maria is a very smart woman.”
“I don’t know, I think maybe we should start with a dance.” said Liz, suddenly feeling uncomfortable. She hadn’t expected picking up a guy to be this easy. Marcus took Liz’s arm and led her into the swarm of teenagers dancing in the living room.

“Where did Liz go?” Maria asked Alex, once Kyle wandered back into the crowd. Kyle was a good looking guy, Maria didn’t understand how Liz could just shrug him off. If Kyle was into her, she certainly wouldn’t have.

Maria and Alex hurried into the main portion of the party, desperately searching for Liz. It wasn’t very hard to spot her. She was dancing suggestively with some guy in the middle of the room, who was desperately trying to cope a feel. Besides that a small circle had formed around them, full of people who had stopped to stare at the new Liz Parker.

Alex rushed over to the group, “I’m cutting in.” he informed Marcus pushing the bigger guy away from Liz. “Hey Alex, why’d you do that?” asked Liz, smiling happily at Alex. “Because, I don’t want you doing anything stupid tonight.” he replied trying to get Liz out of the circle of people, but no one seemed to want to let them through. “Oh, thanks pal.” Liz said, giving Alex a big hug. “I think he was getting a little too touchy for me anyway.” Alex had finally managed to get Liz pulled away from the group and back over to Maria when Marcus came barging over to them. “Dude, what was that?” he demanded. “We were dancing out there.” Alex turned to Marcus, “If you hadn’t noticed she’s a little drunk and doesn’t need some guy trying to take advantage of her.” He didn’t care if Marcus could probably knock him out with one punch, he wasn’t letting anyone mess with Liz. Marcus was about to say something but both guys looked over to realize that Liz was sitting on the steps with Maria crying. “Whatever man.” replied Marcus, walking away from the group.

“Liz honey, it’s okay.” Maria was saying, and Alex sat down on the other side of Liz. “What did he do?” asked Alex, ready to get up and take on anyone for hurting Liz. Besides, he was better at getting beaten up then being a comforter. “It’s not Marcus, but thanks Alex.” Liz whimpered, “It’s Max. Why am I so caught up on him? Why can’t I move on?” Maria smiled at Liz sadly, "Honey, you can’t move on because nothing has happened between you two, maybe you should just tell him how you feel.” replied Maria, signaling Alex to bring Liz some tissue, which Alex took as a welcome reprieve.
“I can’t Maria. I just can’t.”

Destiny Finds You In Strange Ways: Chapter 5

Post by Robyn »

Chapter 5:

“Maria, I’m never letting you convince me to do anything ever again.” declared Liz walking into the cafeteria on Monday. All morning she had been dealing with people whispering, or whistling when she walked into the room. “Ah, come on Liz, you know you liked it.” teased Maria. “Liked it? I don’t think so…you know Marcus, from biology class? The guy you let me grind with? Well, we got paired up as lab partners today. Can you say awkward?” Maria couldn’t help laughing at the look on Liz’s face.

Liz rolled her eyes and threw a carrot stick at Maria. “I’m glad someone is getting some enjoyment from my pain.” Just then Alex came walking into the cafeteria balancing a tray full of food. “Hungry much?” asked Maria, as Alex slammed the tray down on the table. “Actually, half is for my new friend Cally.” Maria and Liz both gave Alex inquisitive glances as they sized up the girl who had walked into the cafeteria behind Alex.

“Cally, these are my friends Liz and Maria.” introduced Alex, proudly showing off his new ‘friend’. “Hi, it’s nice to meet you.” said Cally shyly. Maria jumped up and sat down beside her. “Welcome Cally. This is the first time Alex has brought one of his young ladies home.” Cally laughed politely at Maria, and Alex rolled his eyes, “Don’t let Maria scare you away. She’s a bit much at once, but she’s mostly harmless.”

~
Liz threw her schoolbag down on the floor in her room and plopped down on her bed. It had been a long day. The cat calls and whispering had pretty much stopped after lunch time, so that’s wasn’t bothering her anymore. What was bothering her, though she would never admit it, not even to herself, was she was jealous of her friends’ happiness. Alex had seemed so happy with Cally and she was happy for him, however she was a little annoyed with Maria. They had planned to go to the mall after school, a ‘cheer Liz up shopping spree’ Maria had coined it. But as they walked out of school the mysterious Michael Guerin who Maria had taken into her mind to ‘tame’ had offered Maria a ride home on his motorcycle. In all fairness Liz told Maria that she could go with him, but Maria didn’t have to accept so readily.

Liz turned on the computer and took out her homework as she waited for it to load. She looked at her contact list. He wasn’t online. “He’s probably too busy with his new girlfriend.” Liz thought to herself bitterly. She turned on her music and sat on her bed, looking at her homework aimlessly. She couldn’t keep her mind on her chemistry problems, her mind just kept wondering over to Max. She picked up her diary and began to write in it, but just as quickly closed it again and put it away. She didn’t feel the need to confide in her diary as much lately. Most things that bothered her she could confide in Max, everything of course but what she felt about him.

Liz picked up her pencil and began doing some of her homework problems, when she saw the familiar name flash on her screen. She sat there, and waited to see if he would message her.

Max says: Hi

Liz just starred at his message, and resolved that she wouldn’t respond. She would just go cold turkey. If she couldn’t be a sensible person and talk to Max without this painful longing she just wouldn’t talk to him at all.

Max says: You there?
Liz says: Yeah, just doing some homework.

Liz sighed to herself, why didn’t she have any self control?

Max says: Okay, well, can I bug you anyway?
Liz says: Sure, you're a welcome distraction.
Max says: Have a good weekend?
Liz says: More interesting then good. you?
Max says: Well, I asked Helen out Friday at the dance, and she said yes.

Liz looked at the screen and felt like stabbing it with her pencil.

Liz says: That’s nice.
Max says: We went to a movie afterwards with some mutual friends.
Liz says: What movie?
Max says: Oh, a couple of them, we went to the drive in.
Liz says: Oh, smooth move.
Max says: At least you think so. I don’t think Helen thought too much of it.
Liz says: Why do you think that?
Max says: Well, I took her home, we didn’t talk all weekend, and then she dumped me at school today.
Liz says: Ouch.

Liz couldn’t help smiling, it would have been better if Max had dumped her, but that was merely a detail. He wasn’t going to fall madly in love with Helen.

Max says: Yeah, it kind wounded my male ego. But it doesn’t matter that much anyway. We didn’t really click.
Liz says: It’s hard to find someone who clicks right away.
Max says: Yeah, you really have to get to know a person to tell if they’re the one for you, but it doesn’t take as long to tell if they aren’t. I wish we had gotten to know each other better at camp. Though I think I’ve gotten to know you pretty good online.
Liz says: Yeah, I feel like I’ve gotten to know you too.
Max says: Too bad you don’t live closer. We could go out sometime.

Liz looked at the message and smiled. So he did like her, well, at least enough to date her, if she was within radius of him. That wasn’t much of a victory, but it was something. “Why can’t you be closer?” Liz thought to herself.

Destiny Finds You In Strange Ways - - Chapter 6

Post by Robyn »

Hi, sorry that this part is so short. But there should be some nice long chapters coming after this. :>

Chapter 6:

~3 Months Later~

Liz watched the rain falling outside her window. What a dull Thursday afternoon, hopefully it would be better weather tomorrow. She, Maria and Cally had a night on the town planned. They were going to shop for prom dresses, go out to eat at the restaurant where the hot waiters work, and then hit a late movie. Liz personally thought that May was a still too early to be buying a prom dress, but Maria insisted that if they waited they would be stuck with the dreaded duplicate dress. “But I don’t even have a date.” Liz had complained. Maria only smiled and assured her that the dress was the thing to worry about and the date would work itself out. The dress is key, the guy's just an accessory, was Maria's mantra. It was easy for her to say when she knew exactly who would be taking her to prom. Sure, it might take some work, but in the end, Maria and Michael were a sure thing for prom dates.

“Liz, telephone.” her mother called from downstairs and Liz picked up the phone expecting to hear Maria come on babbling about her latest Michael conquest. “Hi, Elizabeth?” greeted the voice. “Hi.” answered Liz, deciding it must be another university representative. They had been calling lately to ask if she had any questions, or wanted to visit the campus or meet alumni. “I’m calling you to inform you that you have received a $25,000 dollar scholarship…”

“Thanks.” was all Liz managed to say while the lady asked her if she had any questions, only after she hung up, did the information sink in. Twenty-five thousand?! She had expected maybe twenty-five hundred, surely that’s what the representative said. Liz ran downstairs to tell her parents.
~

Liz had been in a blur of happiness all evening, and felt like sharing her news with everyone. But her parents had advised her not to tell too many people until she had it officially in writing, and Liz was inclined to agree with them. She would definitely tell Alex and Maria, but that could wait till tomorrow when she saw them in person. She turned on the computer and decided that she would tell Max. He wasn’t online though, so she wrote him a short e-mail, with the subject Me Happy!!!!

Liz picked up her diary and wrote an entry full of exclamation points and dreams for the future. She got so caught up in her thoughts that she drifted to sleep. A few hours later she woke up disoriented wondering why the light was still on in her room. As she reluctantly got out of bed to turn off the light she realized she had left her computer on as well. Liz went over to the computer to turn it off, but decided to check her e-mail in case Max had responded. He had, with an e-mail aptly titled, Me Happy Too!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Chapter 7

“Maria!” Liz ran towards Maria, knowing that she would just blurt her news out for everyone to hear if she didn’t move quickly. “Maria, guess what?”
“Um… You fell and hit your head a little too hard this morning?” asked Maria, wondering why Liz was acting like a two year old with a new toy. Liz rolled her eyes and smiled, “I got a scholarship for $25 grand to CAU.”

Maria looked at Liz stunned, “That’s amazing Liz. I’m so proud of you. I have a genius for a best friend!” Liz smiled, Maria was one of those great people who could share in the happiness of her friends wholeheartedly. “I don’t know if I’m a genius, but I may be a mad scientist some day. Cornell-Avery has some of the most advanced labs in the country.” Liz smiled to herself, as she imagined working in one of the up-to-date microbiology labs at CA.

“Well, it’s good that the labs are nice, but what’s the guy to girl ratio? Some of those universities are nastily under-male-enated.” Leave it to Maria to watch out for her love life. “It just takes one guy Maria.” replied Liz, unable to keep the huge smile off her face. “Out with it.” demanded Maria, obviously seeing Liz was dying to say something else. “Max got the same scholarship, so it’s almost 99.9% sure that we’ll both end up going to CA.”

“Well, that settles it, you have to ask that boy to prom now.” replied Maria. “Maria, he still lives almost 6 hours away, and just because we’re going to the same school doesn’t mean that suddenly he’s going to be crazy about me.” I pointed out, but there was no arguing with Maria. “Liz, me and Alex will gladly go kidnap him up for you, and as for it being sudden, that’s a load of crap, from what I’ve seen, both of you have been pining for each other for the last year, and this is the perfect chance to get a leg up before school starts next year. And I know you’re going to say that you don’t know how Max feels about you, but obviously you don’t stay up talking till 2 a.m. every other night for someone you want just for a friend.” Maria looked at me triumphantly after her rant. “I just don’t know how to ask him, it would be so odd, we have a good friendship, and it’s like, I mean, how would you feel if you found out Alex was secretly in love with you?”
“Well, I’d be flattered, that’s how I’d feel.”

“Just flattered eh? My life is ruined.” joked Alex as he joined them at the lockers. Maria hit Alex playfully and acted even more flirtatious than usual when she noticed that Michael was looking her way. Maybe she could frighten him into romance. “Hey, watch what you’re doing with my boyfriend.” Cally threatened playfully, joining the group as well. “Guess what guys? Liz has huge news, she got $25 grand to CA.” supplied Maria, unable to help herself from spreading Liz’s good fortune. So much for it keeping it hush hush Liz thought to herself.

“Liz that dress is amazing!” proclaimed Maria, not that she was much help, that was her response to the last five dresses Liz had tried on. “Maria, you’re suppose to be making this easier, telling me what colour makes me look fat or frilly or skanky.” Maria rolled her eyes, and grabbed a dress from her pile to try on. Each girl had picked out at least 10 dresses and was proceeding to try them on one at a time, so they could get opinions on each one. “Well, maybe we should have taken the digital camera, then you could have sent the photos to Max and ask him which one he likes best.” replied Maria, from the changing room stall.

Maria walked out wearing an orange and beige gypsy princess dress and twirled around the dressing room seductively. “That’s definitely the one for you.” decided Liz. “Yeah, I kind of like it. I didn’t at first, but it’s growing on me. Kind of like Michael.” added Maria, as she went back into the stall to take off the dress. She came out holding the dress over her shoulder, with the look of a successful hunter on her face.

“So, Cally found her dress, I found mine, it’s just you left Liz.” Liz proceeded to try on the rest of the dresses in her pile, but none of them seemed just right. Cally thought that the strapless light rose dress with the puffy skirt was perfect for her, and Maria had voted for the sleek sky blue dress with spaghetti straps. “Guys, we might as well just go to the movie, I don’t think I’m going to find my dress tonight. I’m sorry I took so long, you guys should have went looking for shoes without me.” apologized Liz. “It’s okay chica, this was a lot of fun, plus, we can dump you to look for shoes when we have to pull you back here to continue the dress hunt.”

Liz turned on her computer as she got ready for bed. She was hungry, with all the shopping they had missed out on eating, and the movie theatre popcorn hadn’t been very satisfying. So she sneaked downstairs to make herself a midnight snack. Maria had bought a prom dress magazine and had left it there, no doubt on purpose for Liz to find. Liz sat down at the counter and absentmindedly flipped through the magazine. After finishing her snack she cleaned up her mess and slipped back upstairs.

She looked at her computer, and there was a message from Max there.

Max says: Hi
Max says: Guess you’re not there?
Max says: Have a good night. :>

“Stupid hungry stomach.” thought Liz, as she messaged Max back. But it was too late, he had already gone offline 2 minutes earlier.

Chapter 8

Post by Robyn »

Hey, sorry it's been so long for this part. Better late than never I hope.

Chapter 8:

Max says: Hey Liz, you'll never guess who I'm taking to prom.

Liz looked at the line on the screen and felt herself die inside. The last time she and Max had talked, they had both been complaining about not having dates to prom. Liz hadn't jumped at the chance then, and now it was too late. But it wasn't her fault, Max hadn't jumped at her either. She had almost had this romantic idea that both of them would go to their proms solo if they didn't go together. Unfortunately Max hadn't felt like that at all.

Max says: Tess

Tess! Tess lived almost as far away from Max as she did. Granted she at least was in the same state, but Tess wasn't the one who was going to be going to the same university as Max.

Liz says: Wow, small world.
Liz says: Well, sorry Max, I really have to go offline. Need the phone.

"He's going with Tess." Liz said, after Maria asked her for the fourth day in a row if she had asked Max to prom. "Ouch, sorry chica." said Maria, "But, it's probably not even the same day, he could go to both." she offered, trying to cheer Liz up. "I would have felt bad asking him to drive out to go to prom with me, when he's already doing it for Tess I won't dare ask him. And I don't even want to be his reject backup person, and besides, he's taking Tess to his and he's going to hers, I mean, two proms is enough for anyone. I can barely stand one."

"I can set you up with my cousin." offered Cally. "I don't want to be set up with some random person like a loser." burst out Liz. "I mean, am I that pathetic? That I can't even get a date to my senior prom? Isn't prom supposed to be romantic? Not some blind date with a stranger you haven't even met. I mean, it's the end of something."

"WEll, chica, we can go together then." offered Maria, "I mean, I don't think that Michael is going to ask me afterall."

"Thanks Maria. But he is going to ask you, and I don't want you to give that up for me. You at least deserve to have the fairy tale evening, even if it's not going to work out for me. I mean, I'm so mad, I thought things were going to go so perfectly. We'd meet up at school, and I don't know, have one of those special soulful, magical relationships. I am such an idiot. He doesn't have feelings for me. We'll meet up and I'll have to deal with him constantly missing Tess, and every weekend he'll be off visiting her."

Maria, Alex and Cally all just stared at Liz as she continued her rant. Liz was always so guarded, so to actually see her open up when she wasn't drunk was non characteristic.

"And why does he have to be so perfect? I mean.... why can't he have a big nose, or bad breath.. anything."

"Is this a bad time?" asked Michael, walking up to the group. "No, it isn't." replied Liz, "It's a great time, as long as you're here to ask Maria to prom and not tell her that you accidently already asked Pam Troy, because help me God, if you don't make her dreams come true I will kick your ass."

Michael starred at Liz, shocked by her outbreak. In all the time he had known Maria Liz had maybe spoken ten words to him. "Umm.. yeah.. Maria, how bout it?"

"How bout it? What kind of lame romantic gesture is that?" blurted out Liz. "Where are the flowers? The taking her hand? Getting on your knees and beggin?"

"I don't beg." then Michael looked past Liz at Maria and asked, "So?"
"I would love to Michael." replied Maria, smiling to herself. She didn't need flowers or begging, just being asked was a huge leap for Guerin. But seeing Liz molest his technique was too funny.

"Well, she said Yes. Good for you. Now, you better make this a magical evening for her. If I have to live vicariously through my friends it better at least be good."

"Ah, Liz you scared him away." joked Maria as Michael walked quickly away from the group after procuring Maria's answer. "I'm sorry," said Liz, putting her head down on the cafeteria table. "I'm just... this just... it sucks."

"I know honey." comforted Maria. "But there's lots of guys right here in Roswell that will go with you. I mean, it's getting late, so the pickings are slim, but hey, that doesn't matter for you. Because you are the beautiful, smart very talented Liz Parker. And I'm sure Max really wanted to go with you, but honey, guys need to know they're wanted. Have you actually told him you like him? I mean, in any way more than friends? Cuz honey... you are going to go to school together and I don't want you spending four years in love with someone who may be in love with you without ever finding out for sure."

"I have my answer Maria. He's with Tess. It doesn't get any clearer than that what he wants."

Chapter 9: Destiny Finds You In Strange Ways

Post by Robyn »

Okay, so I neglected this fic for awhile and now I'm on a posting rampage.

Chapter 9:

"I'm glad you guys don't mind me tagging along." apologized Liz for the thousandth time. Alex & Cally, and Michael & Maria just rolled their eyes. Liz had actually thought they were going to let her go to her senior prom alone, but unbeknownst to Liz they had told Cally's cousin to meet them at the restaurant. He really was a nice guy and they hoped Liz wouldn't kill him for being kind enough to go with her.

"Hey, we want you here chica. This is our big night, our last hoopla goodbye to our high school lives. That is before exams start. What moron decided to have prom before exams?" Maria rolled her eyes at Liz. They both knew it was an administration decision to cut down on the wild parties after exams. A very unpopular administrative decision, but there was nothing they could do about it.

"Thanks Maria. But maybe I should have stayed home. I mean, I'm infridging on your couples stuff." apologized Liz.

"You sure are." added Michael, which earned him a nasty glare from Maria. "What? You've been giving more attention to Liz all night."

"Well, here we are." declared Alex, stopping his car and they all jumped out and looked at the restaurant. "Gaham's Italian Eatery.. very posh." observed Cally, impressed with Alex's choice. Michael looked somewhat dubious until Alex leaned over to him and assured him that the prices were very reasonable despite the fancy outlook.

"Hello, how may I help you?" asked the maitre d' coming up to join the fancily clad group. "I made reservations. Whitman." said Alex, proudly of his forethought when he saw how busy the restaurant was.

"Aw, yes, party for 6. Your friend is sitting over there waiting for you." The maitre d' pointed to a table in the corner where Cally's cousin sat waiting for them. He waved to Cally and the group made there way over to them.

"Um.. Maria, I think we need to freshen up." said Liz, pulling Maria away from the rest of the group and dragging her into the washrooms on the other side of the restaurant.

"Don't thank me too quickly." said Maria, as Liz fixed a deadly glare on her. "Maria, you knew I didn't want to get fixed up with some stranger."

"Yes, I knew that Liz was too proud for that. But really, Liz, when you had to walk over the stage by yourself, I know you would have wished you had a handsome, and nice guy to go with you. And so we supplied said handsome nice guy. Is it that bad?"

"Yes it's that bad, I'm set up with some random guy. I'll look pathetic. I mean, I know I am pathetic, but does everyone else have to?"

"No one needs to know you were set up honey. And would that be any more pathetic than going on stage by yourself?"

"I didn't need to go through walk through, I could just sneak in past."

"Not do walk through? Liz it's a prom tradition, you can't just not do it. It would be sacrilege."

"Maria, you know what I mean. Now I have to spend my whole prom, when I should just be enjoying my friends that I've known all my life, with a random guy."

"Well, honey, you're my best friend, and as much as I would love to buddy around with you all prom, I kind of want to spend some time with my random guy. And so will everyone else. And when you realize that you'll be glad for Will. So let's be a good girl, prep up our make up and get you out there."

"Mara! It's just..."

"No Liz, we're leaving the bathroom now and you're going to begin the dating dance and be nice to Will. Cuz he did come all this way to see you afterall. Which is more than you can say for Max."

"Maria." said Liz, looking at her friend hurt. "Sorry, that was uncalled for. But honey, you have to face it."

Liz smiled weakly at Liz and the made there way out of the bathroom arm in arm. When they made it to the table Liz had resolved that she would make the most of her date with Will, if not for her own sake, at least for Maria's.

"Hi, I'm Will Farthings." introduced Will, as Liz took her seat across from him. "I'm Liz Parker, but I'm sure you know that." responded Liz, smiling at Will despite herself. She would never admit it, but Maria was right, she was glad she wouldn't have to do walkthrough alone. And looking across at Will she realized that he was quite the looker. So maybe this wouldn't be all bad.

*
The gang made their way out to the parking lot laughing and talking after the meal. "We're not all going to fit into my car." observed Alex, "I hope you don't mind us abondoning you to Will Liz?" he added.

"No, of course not." replied Liz, suddenly cursing her friends in her head. "I guess we'll just meet you guys at the bowling alley?"

"Yep, but take your time if you want. We'll save a ball for you." added Maria, smiling mischieviously at Liz.

"It's right over here." said Will, taking Liz's arm much to her surprise and leading her to the other side of the parking lot. "It's that one." he said smiling. "A red convertable?" stammered Liz, looking at the beautiful car. "Yep. Impressed?" he asked. Liz didn't like the cockiness in Will's voice and was trying to think of a way not to be impressed when he smiled and added sheepishly, "It's just rented for tonight. But hey, that can be our little secret."

"Okay." replied Liz. She certainly didn't mind letting the school socialites think that she arrived at prom with a guy sporting his own sports car. A very good looking guy, and now that he was standing Will towered over her, and she realized he had to be at least 6'3. A tall dark and handsome guy sporting his own sports car.

"So, Liz where are you planning to go to school next year?" Will asked, smiling at her, and she had to admit, he had a beautiful melt you smile.

"Cornell." Liz responded, barely able to get the word out. Will was a very imposing person to talk to. She hadn't noticed it in the group but now his presence was overwhelming.

"Really?" he said laughing. "I go to Carleton."

Liz smiled at Will. Cornell and Carleton were rival schools located an hour from each other. "Really? Well, I guess I'll have to get out of this car before I ruin my reputation there before I even arrive."

Will smiled. "Hey, healthy competition can be a good thing. Makes life interesting at least."

"What are you studying?" Liz asked, trying to keep the conversation going. "I'm a history and poli sci double major." Will answered. "I'm hoping to go into law when I finish my bachelors."

"Well, we're here already." said Will. The convertable made a sharp contrast to the rest of the cars parked at the bowling alley. Liz smiled as Will walked over to her side and opened the door for you. "My lady." he said jokingly as she got out of the car.

They went inside to find the rest of the group taking off their fancy shoes to don bowling alley shoes. "Hey guys, you made it." smiled Maria. "Funny how we bet you here when you are driving a car with about 100 X more horsepower."

"Ha ha Maria." replied Liz, not able to hide the smile from her face. 'You owe me' mouthed Maria. "You owe me for actually going bowling in my prom dress." Liz whispered back to Maria. "Oh, you know you'll love it." Maria whispered back.

Maria picked up the bowling ball and gracefully flung it down the alley in her gypsy dress. Somehow Maria made it look perfectly natural to be at a bowling alley with a prom dress while the rest of them looked perfectly rediculous. But all in all they had a great time and played two games before heading to prom for the walk through.

*

"So, Liz Parker, how in the world was I lucky enough to be paired up with such a beautiful girl?" Will asked as they waited in the long line of couples waiting to make their brief appearance on stage.

"Oh." Liz fumbled.

"You must have had lots of offers." Will supplied. Seeing Liz's down turned face, Maria couldn't help butting in, "Mr. Right turned out to be a dud."

"Maria." protested Liz, she still didn't want Maria to call Max a dud, if nothing else, he was a great guy and a good friend.

"Ah." said Will, "A girl who is picky. Nothing wrong with that. I'm surprised you let yourself be paired up with me."

"I didn't." said Liz, feeling comfortable enough with Will to know he wouldn't take that harshly. "I sort of thought that when you bolted to the lady rooms upon first sight. I mean, I didn't think I was that ugly."

"Well, it's our turn." said Will, taking Liz's arm and leading her onstage. Liz smiled proudly as the camera's flashed at her. But instead of being thinking about Will and how great he turned out to be, all she could think of was how Max would react when she sent him the pictures.
