PART ELEVEN
“Liz?” He whispered “oh Liz…” his head dropped into her hair as he began to weep. Weep for the love he had lost. Weep for the pain he caused her. Weep for the life she never had a chance to enjoy. To live. The thought that he no longer had the woman of his dreams, his soul mate, sent his whole body is a fit of despair. His body began to shake violently and his heart to break into two pieces.
Instantly he knew that half of it was to go to with Liz to where ever she was to go, the other to lie dead and broken in his chest for eternity.
*I’m going to be alone* he thought to himself. He winced in pain as he realised that no one had answered him. Tears trickled down his cheeks, wetting Liz’s hair through, as he lifted hi head from where it was nestled. He wanted to see her rosy cheeks; he wanted to see her emerald eyes. He wanted to see her alive. He wanted to smell her strawberry moisturiser as she came up close to him. He wanted to be able to feel her warm skin beneath his hands.
He closed his eyes, resting his head against the wall. He could just remember what it felt like to be touched by Elizabeth Parker. It always sent chills through his body and made his spirit fly high. At times he felt so charged just by a simple touch from the woman. Sometimes it comforted him; it worked its way down into his soul and calmed the storm within. His soul was crying out for her as he sat there. Moments had pasted, his hands in her hair, stroking it as if she were still alive.
His back became tense as he sensed the others come into the room.
“LIZ!” screamed a distort Maria. His eyes flew open to the scene infront of him. Maria was nestled in Michael’s firm hold. Max was expecting his eyes to show no emotion, but something had changed his brother. Michaels gaze was focused on the body that was resting in Max’s arms, tears spilling from his eyes as he let out the emotion he held within. As Maria’s legs gave way he lifted her gently and took her from the room.
Valenti stood by the doorway with Tess and the small child, tears evident in their eyes.
Max turned to Isabel. Her hand was held firmly by Alex. His need for comfort was shown greatly on his face. Max studied Alex’s face, his eyes wondered over Liz and Max could see his heart in his mouth. He hadn’t believed her when she had said that she wasn’t sure she would survive the birth. He had always thought that she was exaggerating, thinking of the worst situation possible. A violent and loud cry escaped his body as it began to sink in. He had let her down. He hadn’t believed his best friend. Valenti went towards him, placing a hand on his shoulder to calm him.
Jim had always made him weary but Jim had proven to everyone, mostly to Alex, that he was worthy of their trust and although he had only known him for a little while, he still felt like Jim was a father figure. He had been the one to turn to if he had problems with Anya. He was the one Alex turned to when he was upset about Isabel, when he craved her to be the woman he once fell in love with. He laughed to himself mentally because even though she didn’t know that, he still felt she was his. He loved Isabel Evans and she was going to be his one-day.
He looked at her. Almost instantly Isabel let go of his hand, letting it drop to his side, as he stepped forward to Max. He knelt before them and began to stroke Liz’s soft cheek.
“She’s getting cold.” He whispered through tears. “Maybe she would be more comfortable somewhere warmer” All Max could do was nod and begin to stand, Liz in his arms.
He carried her for what seemed forever, and placed her in the bed he had slept in with Ava for the last couple of days. His heart filled with guilt, and his eyes filled with tears as he thought about the pain he had caused her by simply being with Ava. With Tess. He stumbled back as the sobs took over, and slumped to the floor.
“I’m sorry Liz.” He whispered. He wiped his face of tears as he looked at her. He waved his hand over the dress, ridding of the offending blood and just sat observing her. She looked so peaceful, so at rest.
“Once upon a time you told me that the day I save you was the day my life … my life…ended. I remember the way yyyyou felt. You felt so strongly that I shouldn’t have saved you. I should have let you die. But Liz” he lifted his hand up to her forehead, brushing away strands of hair “I couldn’t because I loved you. I have loved you since the day I stood off the bus, since the first day I saw you. I remember… remember the way I felt about you, even then. I just wanted to run to you and pull you into my arms and run away with you forever and ever.” He laughs, “I do remember the night of your blind date. I actually remember telling you that nothing else matters.” He paused, drawing a breath, “But that’s the thing you see… it didn’t then and it still doesn’t now. At the time I was scared. Scared that if I got too close I would feel for once. I was scared I wouldn’t want to go back to where ever I came from. I was scared I would fall in love. But the thing I realised was… I … was already in love, so I couldn’t stay away.” Fresh tears began to surface as he spoke. “I love you Liz. What am I going to do without you?” He lifted his hand from her forehead and placed it on her hand, holding it tightly. “You can’t be gone.” He whispered fiercely “You can’t be… I won’t let you. I won’t! I won’t! I won’t!” His whisper began turning into a shout. “I won’t let you leave me Liz! You can’t! We are meant to be together! You and me! Our baby.” He hand flew to his mouth as he realised he was a father. “We have a child Liz. You’re … you’re a mother.” Tears filled his eyes to the brim as he continued. “I’m a… a … a father.” He turned to Liz once again. “I need you. WE need you.” He closed his eyes with frustration as he shook her arm. “I need you Liz. You have no right to leave us! We need you! I… I … I… neeed you” His shouts dimmed down to a slight whisper as he laid his head down on the bed. “I love you” Tears fell down his cheeks as he began to fall into an uneasy sleep, making him miss the light that suddenly engulfed the room.
*****Dream*****
Max was stood at the doorway of the room, looking at the sight before him. Liz’s dead body, covered in blood. As he steps closer, her eyes fly open, blood shot and emotion filled.
“You promised me Max.” she said, her voice despairing. “You promised me that you wouldn’t let anything happen to me.”
“But I couldn’t heal you!” Tears choked him as they fell. “I tried… Liz… I really tired.”
“YOU PROMISED ME MAX EVANS!” she screamed as she stood from the floor. “You lied to me. Just like you continued to lie to me.”
As her small steps brought her closer to him, he could see the fury held within her eyes. A fury that scared him and sent guilt raging in his stomach.
“I don’t… don’t understand.” He stuttered. “I did… didn’t lie to you. I never have done”
“You told me you wouldn’t let anything happen to me! You told me you wouldn’t let me die!” Liz stopped directly in front of him, her hands clenched by her side. “I won’t let you lie to me again!” Her clenched hands suddenly shot from her side to his throat, squeezing the air out of him.
“Liz!” He screamed “Liz… stop it! LIZ!”
*****End of dream*****
* * * * * * *
“I can’t believe… it.” Maria gasped in a gaze. She was still held firmly in Michaels embrace, many hours after Liz’s death, both were silently letting tears fall as they began to grieve.
“She was so… so… young.” Alex exclaimed as he looked at the window. His arms were tightly wrapped around his chest; as if, if he were to let go his heart would fall out of it. The pain was so severe he just wanted to curl up in a ball and hide away for the rest of his life. He had never known what grief felt like until now. Time and time again he had been there for those who had been suffering due to the loss of a person they loved, yet it had never been him and as he looked out the window, he realised that he was alone in his grief. There was no one to carry him through because everybody on the ship was grieving for the lost of his dearest friend Elizabeth Parker. He had no one to turn to. Max had Isabel, Maria had Michael and Valenti had himself.
Everyone remained in silence for severals minutes remembering Liz’s short life. One full of joy, pain, friendship and love. One worth remembering. Tears slid down each cheek, each chest ached from the sobs and each sob left every person feeling weary. Maria smiled to herself as she remembered the moment she had decided that being with any member of the pod squad would not be good for their health.
The sentence “Me… I’m Teflon babe!” rang through her mind. It now sounded so ridiculous to think that she had actually said that, yet even more so because she wasn’t Teflon. She didn’t just leave Michael when things went wrong. She just couldn’t do it. Tears sprang to her eyes as she realised that, although things had worked out all right for her and Michael, what had happened to Liz was the evidence that being with an alien was going to get you hurt. She had wished that it had been her that had suffered, not Liz. She had always known that Liz would be strong with out Maria but it didn’t work out that way. Maria didn’t have Liz to fall back on now. She needed her best friend to help her guide her through her life, help untangle all the different and complex webs of emotions and help her figure out what she wanted in life. Now she had to do it on her own, which was a task that had always seemed impossible but now a reality.
“I wonder if Max is okay,” Tess whispered as she sat rocking back and forth, the young infant in her arms, making Maria turned to her. Her grief was evident in her eyes, which shocked Maria. She had never seen this woman show much emotion at all except complete and utter lust towards Max. The moment Tess had started to cause trouble between Liz and Max, Maria had already made up her mind that she hated her. She didn’t think about the fact Tess was still human to some degree, a factor she never took in to account when she was judging her. She watched as Tess’ gaze fell to the child within her arms, a whole new emotion began flooding over her. Compassion. This woman was still a woman. No matter how much she tried to rationalise it, Tess had always been the big bad alien to her and by just simply watching her, she was being to realise how similar she was to a teenage girl. She dreamt of meeting the love of her life, she wanted a big fancy wedding and she wanted to have a child. It was all marked on this woman’s face. For the first time ever, Maria was seeing the real Tess Harding. She sighed at the thought that it’s in times of grief where you can see a totally different side to a person.
“He’ll never be okay,” whispered Isabel in reply. “She meant everything to him. He will never be able to live happily again. He won’t be able to live.” She sighed as she began retreating in to her mind.
*Typical Isabel Evans* she thought to herself. *Hide away in your own mind when the going gets tough* the feeling of shame began to creep all over her body as she contemplated the fact she wasn’t by her brothers side at the time he needed her most. Yet what good would it actually do to be there? What go will it do if you are not the one person he needed most? She knew he would just shut her out anyway so she had already given up. She kicked herself as she realised she hadn’t even tried to help him grieve, to help with the situation and his emotions. She could picture him doing all sorts of things as a way of repenting for whatever pain he had put Liz through. Panic began to take over her body.
“We need to check up on him” she exclaimed as she headed out the door. “I think he might do something stupid” Her legs couldn’t move quickly enough as she ran towards the room where Liz’s body laid, the rest of the group following her. Her body was buzzing with adrenaline as the thought of her brother’s dead body, lying cold and motionless on the floor of the room, flashed across her mind. Her hands trembled violently with expectation of finding his body and as she swung the door open, the only word that could form on her lips was
“Liz.”
