What Destiny Brings
Part 17
He looked at the monitor, why wasn't it working? He should be able to see everything, who was coming in and who was going out. All he could see was black…
Evan carried the camera tucked securely in his hands, he didn’t want anyone to be able to see where he was. Looking around, he saw one of Liz’s ceramic boxes. Lifting the lid, he placed it inside. Once the lid was back on, he called to the others. “We did have visitors, they left us a present.” Putting his finger to his lips to signal to them not to say a word, he lifted the lid for them to see.
“Oh a mystery…we haven’t had any fun like this since Tess and Nesado!” Maria missed all of the excitement and mystery of their high school days…well it had scared her half to death on occasion, but it was always interesting. When she realized what she said, she gave Liz and apologetic look “Sorry.”
“Don’t be, I’m still here, they aren’t. We did have some pretty good times back then, didn’t we?”
Thinking about some of the situations that had happened made her smile. Even though they didn’t think of them as good when it was all going on, hindsight gave it all a new prospective. “Remember that time Kyle got Max drunk?”
“I only had one little sip, that doesn’t constitute drunk!” Max was pretending that his feelings were hurt.
Liz walked over beside him and pats his behind, “It does if you’re an alien, Dear. Now what do you suppose we should do with our gift?
“Let’s leave it in the box for now, maybe someone will come looking for it.” Michael wanted it out to look at it, to try to figure who would plant something like that here. He knew Max wouldn’t hear of it…they’d keep it closed up until they could take it somewhere else. He looked towards Max and Liz, they seemed more interested in the new destiny book. Evan and Capra had gone to stand by them, they wanted to know what it meant too. Liz picked it up, opening the cover, she looked for the picture of Evan and Capra…but she only saw Evan, Max was looking over her shoulder and saw it too. He reaches around Liz’s arm and takes the book closing it he tries to put it away.
“Wait, we want to see it…why did you close it like that?” Evan couldn’t understand what they saw that was so bad. “Our pictures are still in there right?”
“We’ll check it out later, when we have more time.” Max started to walk away, but Evan snuck his hand around and he grabbed the book away from him. “Evan! Give me that, we’ll look at it later!”
“No, if it has something to do with our future, I want to see it now!” He opens the book, then he sees it, he was the only one left, Capra was gone. “No! This is wrong! Where did she go?”
Capra looks over at the book and sees she’s no longer there. Her eyes fill up with tears.
“Does this mean…no, it can’t be that.” Looking at Evan, she runs for the door.
“It can’t mean that I lose her. I won’t let it! She’s the love of my life!” He runs after her, but she has disappeared.
“We have to get them back, to explain what they see isn’t necessarily what will happen…Max, he can’t lose her, it will kill him.” She began to fear for her grandson…if this destiny came to pass, she was afraid all would be lost for Evan.
“He will know soon, I think, that their destiny might be decided by how he handles a situation. Something or someone is coming, can’t you feel it?” Destiny hated it that she was burdened with all of the combined powers of her family. The intense flashes of things to come have been known to keep her locked away for days. No one, not even Liz knew how bad they could get. Sometimes they would be about people they didn’t know and had no way of finding, yet she was weighed down with the knowledge of something she couldn’t do anything about. Sometimes, when she could figure out where the person was, they would get there too late…making her unable to heal the person. “Sometimes I wish I could get rid of these powers, I feel like they will make me crazy.”
Max had never thought about what she went through…he knew what his cost him, but to have all of them, to always being connected with something or someone…was it a burden to her? He walks over to her and takes her into his arms. “Dessie, I know how they can be…no, I don’t know what you go through, it must be overwhelming.” That’s when he felt her crying, something she never did, at least in front of him. He just held her, he hoped that this would free her of some of the pain she must carry. “If there was anyway I could take them away, I would. But I think you were given them for a reason.” She looks at him, asking why with her eyes. “You are so much like your mother. When she was tested with Future Max, her strength to protect those she loved must have been immeasurable. She not only had to make me fall out of love with her, but she had to send me to Tess. I thought I would die when I saw her with Kyle…but for her to know that she didn’t have a choice, that she would have to lie to me, breaking my faith in her…I marvel at her every time I think about it. She is the real hero to me…she has survived what was put on her, to protect us all. Then when she found out it was all a test she accepted it because we had made it through it and it made us stronger. I think that sometimes you must be tested to accept the life you had no choice in. We never know what will happen, so we must accept each test one day at a time. I love you Dessie, you have made me so proud. You have your mother’s strength…you are my hero too.” He leans over and kisses her forehead. “Now, we have to find Evan and Capra and get this straightened out.” As he turns to go, he looks at her…when he does he sees a little girl that was lost changing into the woman that had finally found herself.
He stood off hidden in the rocks, watching. He saw her run out, this was good. She would be alone and upset. He would make his move now…
She stood in the shadows of the pod chamber, she ran down to the bottom. She didn’t want to take any chances by running up, not that she would, of course. The shade was cool, it let her clear her head. If they were in the book, then it changed, didn’t that mean that it could change back. She saw what their destiny was before and it was beautiful, even though it had surprised her. But to see that she wouldn’t be there…it just didn’t seem possible. Evan would find a way to save her…he had to. She was lost in her thoughts when she saw his shadow. “Evan, is that you?” She had to shield her eyes from the bright desert sun. He didn’t say anything, just pointed his hand at her, sending her backwards, knocking her out…
Evan went down the rocks, looking in every direction. “Capra! Where are you?” He waited but didn’t hear a sound…”Capra!”
“Evan? How are you?”
Evan turned at the sound of his voice “Professor Draakes, what are you doing here?”

What Destiny Brings
Part 18
“I don’t mean to sound rude professor, but did you happen to see Capra on your way here? She was upset about something and took off. I was just on my way to find her.”
“Sorry I didn’t see her…can I help in anyway?”
“No, we’ll find her. Is there something we can help you with?” Evan wanted to get going, he didn’t feel like making small talk with his ex-professor.
“I was wondering if you could make arrangements for me to see those burial grounds again, you seem to know the man at the trading post. Would there be any objections if I went up there and took some pictures?” The professor wanted to study some of the markings he saw.
“You can go up to the trading post, talk to Eddie, tell him I sent you. It should be okay as long as you don’t disturb anything. I really need to go, it’s important that I find her.”
He laid her down on the cave’s floor, he was surprised she hadn’t come around yet. Humans could be so weak. “I wonder how long it will take for them to figure out where I took her. Maybe they won’t figure it out, then what?” She started to make a small moan, then she went back to sleep. “I’ll give you another hour. Then I’ll make sure you’re awake to answer some questions…”
Evan checked every inch of the area in front of him, he knew it wouldn’t make any sense to go up, she would never do that no matter how upset she was. It was getting hotter and he knew she didn’t have any water, he had to find her soon. “Capra! Where are you?” He calls to her. There was one more place to check, and if she wasn’t there, then he wouldn’t know where she was. He looked around the area behind the rocks, a place she went to before, in the shadows he saw something. Bending over, he picked up her shoe. If she only had on one shoe, she couldn’t get far, unless someone helped her. “Camera man?” Did the person that left the camera take her, and if so, for what? He heard a noise behind him, making him jump “Capra?”
“No, it’s just us…sorry. You haven’t found her yet?” Max and Michael stood there watching Evan. “What’s wrong? Evan…” Max was starting to get nervous. With someone out there hiding cameras, could they have also taken her?
Evan held up the shoe. “She can’t be far off, she should be right here without her shoe. I don’t like the feeling I’m getting.”
“I think it’s time to get your mother involved. Let’s go.”
Destiny knew they were on their way, the feelings she was getting weren’t good. They needed to find her soon. But when they did, what would they do? It wasn’t going to be easy getting her back.
The door of the pod chamber came open; the three of them came into the room. “I think I can find her if you have a picture…I’ll need to dreamwalk her.” Evan thought for a minute…did he even have a picture of her? “I have one, just a minute!” He runs to his room, pulling down the box he had stored some of the things he had brought with him, he finds the group picture they took just before coming to Roswell. Returning to the living room, he hands her the picture. “It’s not real good, I hope it will work.”
Destiny looked at the picture, “This will do fine.”
Destiny placed her finger on Capra’s face. “Oh Capra, you have to hear me…we can’t help you if you don’t.” Closing her eyes, she leaned back and waited. She could smell and feel the dampness of the cave, but there were a lot of caves nearby, which one was it? She saw Capra lying on the floor. ‘At least she’s still alive’, but where were they? She needed to talk to her, but she didn’t know if she could get in. Capra started to roll over, opening her eyes she saw Destiny. ‘How did you get in? How did you get passed him?’ ‘I’m not really here. I’m in your dreams to find out where you are, can you help me?’
‘What do you want me to do?’ ‘Try to show me where you are, do you have any idea?’ Capra looked around trying to find something that would give her a hint to her location. Then she pointed to a wall, a green glow came from it. ‘The map cave? They took you to the map cave?’
Capra nodded her head. ‘I think there is only one of them. But there might be others. You have to go, I think he’s coming!’
She suddenly jerked herself up right. “Mom, are you okay?”
“Yes, she’s in the cave with the map, from what she says there is only one person involved. But there maybe others.”
“Let’s go!” Evan was ready to hit the road and get his wife back.
“No! We have to figure out the best way to get in there. If we do this wrong, we could get her killed.” Max needed to have a serious talk with his grandson soon. He has to learn that to go in blindly could be his downfall then everyone loses.
Destiny stood up; when she turned to go to the kitchen she bumped into the new destiny book. Picking it up she didn’t know if she should check it or not. Maybe it would be in their best interests if she did. Once she opened it she felt she had not made a mistake. Walking over to the table, she lays the open book for them all to see. “Evan, you must listen to whatever they say because if you don’t this will be the result.” Looking into the book, they see that Evan is gone too. “When it all comes down, you must also listen to Capra, she will save you from yourself. We must come up with a plan to make sure everyone comes home.”
He walked up the hill from the trading post, Eddie was kind enough to tell him a brief history of their burial grounds and what some of the symbols meant. He didn’t think the altitude had affected him this way that last time he was here…he could hardly breathe and his heart felt like it was racing, then he was on the ground…
“It’s about time you woke up. Now, what will it take to get them here?”
“I can’t believe it’s you, he would have trusted you with his life! I won’t tell you anything, you can’t make me talk!” Capra watched him, she couldn’t understand how he could do this to Evan…
The professor stood up, dusting off his pants…it wasn’t the best, but it would do in a pinch. It probably wouldn’t be for long anyway. Once this was done this body could die or it could live, it wouldn’t make any difference one way or another.
“I will have what I want, you and that boyfriend can’t stop me. Now where is it? I know you’ve seen it!” He walked towards her…this would be fun, he hadn’t had much fun in the past few years. That whole college thing was such a bore.
“Evan is my husband now, and I still won’t tell you anything!” Suddenly the light coming into the cave is blocked. Capra squints to see who it is. “Professor, get out of here now! Hurry before it’s too late!”
The professor starts to laugh, “It’s already too late…the professor is gone, at least for now.”
“It’s about time you got here! I don’t know how much longer I can stand this.” He starts to scratch at the peeling skin.
“Soro, my man, you are a mess. What happened to your moisture chamber, don’t you know that this dry, desert air is bad for you. What has it been almost fifty years now, if this keeps up, you won’t even make it the full time.”
“I’ve hated that stupid name ever since you gave it to me…what have you done with my moisture chamber?”
“All right Nicholas, are you happy now. Oh, yes, did I forget to mention that the last moisture chamber was destroyed when Michael blew up what was left of the Crashdown? Sorry.”
“I knew when I gave you the antidote for that damn poison that it would be the biggest mistake of my life…”
