Boomerang Effect-(AU,ML,MATURE) Part 14 6/7/05 Complete
Boomerang Effect
Title: Boomerange Effect
Genre: AU,
Pairings/Couple(s):
Max/Maria, L/Micheal, Liz/Max
Rating: Mature
Disclaimer: The characters of "Roswell" belong to Jason Katims, Melinda Metz, WB, and UPN. They are not mine and no infringement is intended.
Last Updated Date: CH. 11
Summary: This is all just from my head and as I go really. Max is married to Maria and they are very wealthy, however love is missing from their relationship. Michael and Liz are married and are not doing so well financially. However, there is a secret kept between Max and Liz and when it is brought out what could happen can change all couples involved forever or will history repeat itself if something isn't done to save these couples' marriage.
Prologue
It wasn’t supposed to happen. They were both happily married. However there was something missing from their marriages, love. Don’t get it wrong, they both respected their spouses and appreciated them beyond belief. While one married out of obligation, the other married out of the need to be wanted.
It had taken place eight years ago just after they had gotten married. It wasn’t supposed to happen, he just came over to talk to his best friend about a fight and the best friend was out of town on business. So they talked and when talking did not work they had sex. In the morning they promised to never discuss the events of last night to anyone.
So, Max went home to face his wife and apologize for the stupid fight they had the night before. While, Liz waited at home for her husband to arrive. As years went buy, the event was never brought up again. However, a secret was kept between the two beyond just the sex and secret was kept, a secret that for eight long years was never, ever revealed. This secret would change the course of everyone involved.
Remember for each action there is a equal reaction. So, I ask you, who will survive the boomerang effect, when the secret of that one night of passion comes out.

Part 1
Liz sat in her broken down apartment, folding laundry. She hated the apartment it was dark and gloomy and there weren’t any clean new things. Everything was broken and needed to be fixed, it looked like something from those old movies where poor people lived. That’s what she was poor, her husband had a minimum wage job driving for a truck company so he was gone most of the time and she had an eight year old daughter, Loretta.
Liz and Michael got married young, they were only 19.
Michael was the first and only guy who ever looked at Liz and saw beauty. Not that she wasn’t attractive, Liz just never overly dressed or played around with her beauty. She was very shy and rarely talked to anyone. Liz was a book worm and loved to read, she was just never that good when it came to math and sciences. She just never got it.
Michael was a hunk of sorts, just never that swift when it came to the math and sciences or English and basically all educational aspects of school. He would much rather fool around and skip school. It was love at first sight for Michael, he saw a girl who would care for him in his old age, a girl who would work to please him and that’s all he wanted in a girl.
Don’t get it wrong he indeed loved Liz, but loved her as much as he was capable of. The two met at high school and when their two best friends began to date so did they.
As Liz sat on her ripped up couch folding the laundry a tear rolled from her eye. The tears were made up of different emotions, not sadness of her life but also for the little girl who slept in a small sleeping bag on blankets right beside her and her husbands mattress. Will that little girl ever get the life she deserved.
Across town on Maple Street lived Max and his beautiful wife, Maria. They had no children but were very wealthy. Max was a lawyer in his father’s very big law firm and his wife, well she had no real job but she did handle money (well spent money well). There house was big and very tasteful. They got married seven years ago when they were only 18. They had dated all through high school, he was a smart big shot and she was the preppy cheerleader girlfriend. They loved every little detail of each other, well the details they could handle. They respected and cared deeply for each other. They weren’t forced into marriage, but Max had dated her long enough and thought he owed her marriage. He also would have enough money to support them and she was lovable, at times and he thought that’s what all marriage was.
That night the two sat at the dinner table eating quietly. Max was going over documents for an upcoming case, while Maria was listening to the music play in the background. She hummed to the music as she buttered her bread and drank her wine.
“you know I was thinking, maybe we should start a family,” Maria said seriously. Max who wasn’t paying attention until then, shot his head up from his papers and looked over at his wife. As they starred at each other, Maria began to crack a smile and giggle. “You should have seen the look on your face, I was so kidding ya me a mom…Please, I can’t even stand Liz’s kid that much and she’s an angel. I swear though, that look was priceless I think you were about to wet yourself.” Maria laughed and she took a bite of her bread. “Ya, very funny Maria,” Max smiled and looked back down at his papers. “Hey, I was thinking maybe we should go see a movie or something tonight, I mean it’s only nine thirty. It would be like high school again, us in the back of the movie theatre making out.” Maria said trying to catch Max’s attention again. Max looked up from his papers and nodded, “ya a movie sounds good.” Maria beamed, “great, I will go get the paper and get a movie time,” she said walking out of the dinning room Max just smiled until she was gone and then went back to his work.

PART 2A
The Next Morning
The Evans’ Residence
As the sun shone through the curtains, Max awoke and just laid there. Thinking of where his life has gone and then he looked to his right to see her lying there. That night after the movie they made love, for the first time in months. They were growing further and further apart it seemed, not like they were ever really close of anything. Sometimes the awkward silence at the dinner table or the ignoring each other for no apparent reason got to him.
He soon got up and went for his morning jog. He lived for his morning jog, it was his time. His time to not worry about his father and his job or where his marriage was heading. It was his time to just run away from his problems. As he ran he thought of her, he always thought of her. What she was doing right at that moment, if she was thinking of him. As he jogged a thought came to mind, one that has came to his mind a lot ever since the day she was born. There was something different this time as he thought of her, with the thought of her came a ache for knowledge and at that moment he needed to know. He stopped running and breathed heavily wondering how he would get the answers he needed. He looked around and again started to run.
Guerin Residence
Liz was making breakfast as Loretta was getting ready for school.
“Loretta, sweetheart breakfast is almost ready. I made your favourite- oatmeal with raisins.” Liz said as she mixed the contents in the pot. Loretta never talked, she would occasionally utter some words to her mother, but never anyone else. Not her father, not even at school. She was a mute to everyone. It wasn’t that she didn’t know how to talk or that she liked ignoring everyone, it was a medical condition. Every since she was born she was not able to cry or yell or anything. Her vocal cords where never fully grown and she was also a premature baby which didn’t help matters. Given everything she went through as a child it was almost a miracle she was alive today. Loretta Lyn Guerin meant the world to her mother, her father ignored her most of the time and so did everyone else, thinking she was a freak for not speaking. Her mother would do anything for her, she would give her life for that child.
Loretta sat at the table and smiled as her mother put the hot bowl of oatmeal in front of her. Loretta nodded in thanks and began to eat it slowly blowing on it so it wouldn’t harm her throat. Then there was a knock at the door.
“Coming.” Liz said getting up from the table. She opened the door expecting to see the landlord asking for his money, but what she found instead was something she never expected in all of these years.
“Max…”

Part 2B
Liz starred in shock at what she saw, “Ma…Max, what are you doing here?”
“I…I need to know something, it has been plaguing on my mind for eight years now and I know I should have said something when I thought it…” Max was speaking like 100 miles per minute.
“Oh…ok come on in,” Liz said shyly moving away so that he could come inside.
Once he was in the small apartment, he looked up to see the little girl at the table quietly eating her breakfast.
“Oh! I m sorry, I thought you were alone. I can come back some other time,” Max said still starring at Loretta.
“It’s ok, Loretta has school now anyway. You can have a seat while I get her off to school…you know…only if you want,” Liz said walking to stand in front of him. Without saying a word Max sat down on the couch and watched as Liz got Loretta out the door.
After Loretta was gone, Liz stood by the closed door not knowing what to say or anything. Sure the two of them had been in the same room as each other, they were married to each others best friend after all. However, they never really had a conversation or talked a lot since that incident eight years ago, they both felt it would be easier on the whole situation if they kept their distance.
“Would you like something to drink, we have water and…ummm water?” Liz asked walking towards the couch with her head down.
“No, uhhh…no thanks I m ok. Oh, but thanks for the offer,” Max said standing up and walking towards her.
“So…ok…ummmm… I need to ask you something and I need you to be honest with me, because I think I m going to explode if I don’t get an answer soon. Is…is she mine, I mean am I her father?” Max asked trying to get Liz to look him in the eyes.
Liz didn’t budge she kept starring at the floor, she knew eventually she would have to answer this, but it was so long ago and when he never asked back then she thought she would never have to worry about…that he didn’t really care.
“Max, why…now? Why do you need to know after eight years of her life?” Liz asked lifting her head up to see his serious facial expression.
“I don’t know,” he answered turning around and walking towards the window not far from where he was just standing. He starred out the window.
“It’s just, all my life I dreamed of the perfect life. Wonderful career, dedicated wife, dogs and cats. No children because, I was never big on having children. It seems now that I have all that it doesn’t matter. Like everything I have been working hard for all my life is pointless, like I m missing something. Then today when I was running and thinking about everything in my life, that night…the night we spent together came to mind and then I had like a sudden thought that your little girl could be mine and not Michael’s.” Max stated not turning to face her.
Liz was speechless, she sat down on the couch before her legs could give out.
“Max…I can’t tell you the truth,” Liz stated as a tear dropped from her eye.
“What?” Max asked as he spun around to face her once again.
“If I tell you the truth, it could change everything. All you have you could loose…are you sure that is something you would want?” Liz asked looking up at him as she wiped the tears from her eyes.
“So, it is true…I am her father and you knew? WHY HAVEN’T YOU EVER SAID ANYTHING?” Max asked getting angry
“You never cared to know, it was a mistake that we made…and I knew I could never tell you the truth without destroying your life that you have an know.” Liz said standing up and walking towards him.
Max took a deep breath and calmed down, he knew she was right. After all this time it shouldn’t matter. He couldn’t destroy Maria like this, it wasn’t fair.
He looked around the apartment, it was a ditch, and he knew they didn’t have a lot of money. Over the years he had offered to help Michael but he always refused saying he could handle it and that he didn’t want his charity. It was a non stop battle he had with him and Maria. Maria didn’t want to share their money, she thought that Michael and Liz got into this mess they should be the ones to get themselves out of it.
“Do you need anything…like…money or anything?” Max asked quietly
“No, we will be fine like always,” Liz replied in a calm voice.
She didn’t want him to think he had to be something he clearly wasn’t for her or Loretta all of a sudden.
Liz looked at Max and noticed that he wasn’t wearing a shirt and it did get awfully cold in the apartment, so she turned and went to the laundry basket and pulled out one of Michaels freshly cleaned sweat shirts and brought it over to Max.
“Here, you should wear this. It gets really cold in here and I don’t want you to catch a cold over everything else.” Liz said handing him the sweatshirt.
He looked up at her and felt something strong right at that moment. It was passion and the sense that maybe he had been wrong all along. He pulled her towards him and kissed her passionately. The two never parted and made their way to the mattress and fell to it. At that moment the two made love, but will history repeat itself.

Part 3
Max woke up to the smell of blueberry muffins. Liz was in the kitchen busying herself with cleaning and baking.
Max got up from the mattress and dressed quickly in his sweatpants and Michael’s sweatshirt which, Liz had gotten for him. He walked up behind Liz.
“Hey,” he said breaking the silence
Liz turned around and slightly smiled, “hey, do you want some muffins or some coffee.”
Max smiled, “ya, coffee and muffins sound great…ummm…can I use your bathroom for a minute?”
Liz nodded and showed him to the small bathroom down the short hall. As
Max walked into the bathroom, Liz breathed a heavy sigh and began to finish making the coffee.
When Max came back from the washroom, the coffee and muffins were out on the table and he took a seat quietly. Liz finished the dishes as he drank his coffee.
“Liz…come sit down with me, I think we need to talk,” Max said quietly.
Liz sighed heavily she was afraid of this, it felt as if she was right back where it all started eight years ago. She put her dish towel down and sat across the small table.
“Liz,” he began as he looked down at his mug, “I know the truth about Loretta, that she is my daughter. I was stupid to actually believe she wasn’t but for eight years, I can never forgive myself for that. I can never tell you how truly sorry I am for what you had to go through and how I treated you and everything. I just I don’t know anymore. It’s like I have everything in the world and it seems that even though it looks perfect on the outside, on the inside it is falling apart. I am falling apart.”
Max looked up to Liz with a tear in his eye, “can you…will you let me see her, I never really met her. I mean I know who she is and stuff, but I want to meet her as her father, will you let me?”
“Max, you can’t. You can’t all of a sudden after eight years of trying to ignore the fact you were her father, you can’t all of a sudden say I m stepping up to the plate. You had your chance and you struck out. Michael and I are raising her just fine, we don’t need your help,” Liz said
Max was beginning to get upset, “Michael and you are raising her! Ya, right! Whenever you come to visit Michael barely looks at her and when he does, he glares. He doesn’t love Loretta.” Max said standing up angrily
“AND YOU DO?! Since what 2 hours ago when you finally got your head out of your ass and realized how blindly stupid you have been for the past eight years. At least Michael has been here, he may not win the prize for most gracious and lovable father but either will you!” Liz yelled as she walked back to the dishes and hurriedly started washing pots and pans that didn’t even need washing.
Silence fell on the room at that moment, Max knew she was right but he needed to correct what he has done. “I just…I want to see her, talk to her. Even though she can’t talk back, I need too. Please…let me,”
Liz turned around slowly, “ummm…ok, she’ll be back from school in a couple of hours you can talk to her then. Wait, don’t you have work today?” Liz asked realizing the time
“uhhh…no, not today. I have no appointments and all of my cases are up to date. I only go to the office sometimes, just to get away from the silence in my house,” he replied
“oh, I see. Shouldn’t you call Maria and tell her your out. She will probably be wondering where you went,” Liz stated
“No, she doesn’t care. We eat together sometimes for dinner and the rest of the time I do my thing and she does hers…so…anyway, while I m here is there anything I can do?” Max asked clapping his hands together.
“Max, about what happen…we…you know what happened…we made love or had sex. Anyway, what does that mean?” Liz asked
“ It means, we had sex. Not everything has to be some big thing Liz. I was feeling lost and you feel lost it just it happens. I mean I have never cheated on Maria, ever in our relationship. It happened and you know what? I want it to happen again, with you. Max said touching her cheek softly, “I don’t know what it is, but it feels right.” Max leaned in and kissed her softly on the lips.
“Let’s see what happens and not look to deeply into yet,” Max said as their lips parted.
The room was once again filled with silence as they looked into each others eyes.
Finding the silence too much Max decided to break it, “So, what do you need help with…I noticed the water isn’t running very well in the bathroom and…” he walked to the kitchen faucet and turned it on. It took awhile for the water to come on and when it did it didn’t have a lot of pressure and when he turned the pressure up more the water began to spray everywhere and stall sometimes. “it seems that the water is working funny here as well, let me fix it.” Max said turning towards Liz, who just smiled. Max walked past her to where the couch was, “Michael keeps his tools under the sofa right?”

Part 4
It was three in the afternoon and Max still was working on the sink in the kitchen. He had been swearing and muttering the entire time and Liz couldn’t help but watch and laugh at him when he bumped his head for the 15th time on the one of the pipes.
“Max, maybe it just can’t be fixed,” Liz stated as she sat at the table with a cup of coffee in her lap.
“Of course it can, and I will fix it. Everything can be fixed if you work at it long enough,” Max said from under the sink.
“Well, I guess that can be said for your marriage as well then, huh?” Liz said shyly
At that Max came up from under the sink and looked at Liz, “my marriage to Maria was over before it began. There is no fixing something that was never there to begin with,” Max said throwing a hammer into the tool kit. He then turned around and sat on a seat beside Liz.
“Max, I feel awful. I mean you are married to my best friend and I m married to yours we can’t just…it’s immoral and completely unfair.” Liz said as fresh tears welled up in her eyes.
“I don’t care. Liz, I don’t care what happens if they find out. I mean maybe we were wrong to marry them to begin with. I mean my marriage is basically out of obligation Maria and I both feel because we have been together for so long. Also, I see the way Michael treats you, as if you’re a slave to him. There is no love there and you can’t sit there and tell me you love a man who gets off calling you names.” Max said as he stood up and starred down at her.
“and what we have is love? Max you don’t even know what love is. You think you do, but you have no idea! Max, eight years ago we had sex and what in one day you think you can undue all of those wrongs you did to me and our baby! You didn’t care, and don’t stand there and tell me you never knew Loretta was yours…you knew all along, but you were just to cowardly to ever admit it openly and to yourself. You can’t make her love you in one day…what are you going to stand there and say listen kid I am your father and I demand you love me, even though I hadn’t given a damn about you in your whole eight years of life! YOU WILL NOT HURT THAT CHILD OR SO HELP ME I WILL WISH YOU WERE NEVER BORN!” Liz yelled completely unburdening all her pent up emotions she has held inside since the moment he stepped foot in that door.
“You know, you’re right. I probably have always known deep down inside that she Loretta was mine and ya, maybe I never wanted to admit it. But, there hasn’t been a day that has gone by in all these eight years that I didn’t think of her or you and that night. I think about it everyday, what would have happened if we had continued from that night on. Why do you think I can’t love Maria and commit fully to my marriage. It’s because deep down inside maybe I do know what love is and maybe I do love you. The truth is I m not sure of anything, I haven’t been sure for eight years! You’re right I can’t in one day give Loretta what she hasn’t had in eight years… I may never be able to repay her that, but I…want to see her. And us, I don’t know what is going and I don’t know what it is…but I know it feels right and maybe that isn’t what you want to hear, but for now that’s all I can give you.”
Just before Liz was about to say something the door opened and in walked Loretta, home from school.
Both adults turned around as Loretta came in to the apartment.
“Hey, sweetie! How was school?” Liz asked walking towards the little girl and taking her back pack and shoes and placing them in the corner. The she bent down and gave her a kiss on the cheek.
Loretta smiled and looked towards Max and pointed, asking her mom why he was there.
“Loretta, you know Max. Daddy’s friend he came for a visit. Can you keep him company on the couch while I finish making us some tee and cookies?” Liz asked standing up and smiling sweetly at Loretta.
Loretta just nodded and looked to Max shyly. When Liz left them the two just stood across from each other in a starring contest, until Loretta just smiled and walked up slowly to Max and took his hand and led him to the couch.

Part 5
A few days had came and gone and Max had been spending some time over at Liz’s during his lunch breaks and when Loretta was at school so it wasn’t too weird for her. Max desperately wanted to spend more time with the young girl, but Liz had said to take things slowly because it would be unfair to rush Max into the young girl’s already difficult life.
Liz found herself at her kitchen table fiddling with her coffee cup and starring off into the universe somewhere. She was contemplating life, her life, her daughters life and where Max Evans fit into all that. The past few days had been nice, wonderful even, it felt good Max spending time with her. He helped fix things that needed to be fixed, even though he complained the entire time, he made love to her and held her. For the first time she felt loved, but the only sad thing was she wasn’t able to tell him how she felt because he wouldn’t hear of it. It was almost as if he was scared about the word, that if he heard it from her it meant he had to finally decide for once in eight years where his heart belonged. Love is a delicate thing, some people wait forever and never find it, others find it and are too scared to really act on the feeling. Max, was a complicated 27 year old man that was one thing Liz was certain of.
‘knock, knock’
Liz jolted out of her thoughts and went to go see who was at the door. When she peaked through the peep whole she wasn’t surprised at who she saw.
She opened the door and smiled at what she saw, “well, speak of the devil,” she said as he walked into her apartment.
“What?” Max asked defensively
“Nothing bad, I was just thinking about you that’s all,” Liz said shyly as she closed the door.
“Naked, I hope…” Max said mockingly as he gave her a wink.
“Ya, your so funny Mr. Evans,” Liz said as she moved forward to stand in front of him.
Max took his hands out of his jean pockets and pulled her into a hug and gave her a sweet but tender kiss on the lips.
“So, what am I doing today?” Max asked as he let go of Liz and moved around the apartment.
“Max, your not my repair man…in fact I don’t know what you are…” Liz said starring down at the ground.
“Liz…we talked about this, I don’t know what I feel all I know is that I want to be here ok. I want to be here with you right now, like this…so just let me, ok.” Max said coming closer to her once again.
“I know, I know…it’s just I hate not knowing what your thinking or feeling about me. I don’t just want to be the sluty girl who is doing her best friends boyfriend for pleasure. If we continue this I want to know where your heart is.” Liz said playing with the collar of his sweatshirt.
“Liz, when I find out where my heart is. You’ll be the first to know. Right now, I can’t lead you on and say ya, I love you if I don’t really know what it is yet. It’s not fair to you or in a way our daughter,” Max said kissing her forehead.
“Wow…” Liz said as she closed her eyes, just feeling his warmth.
“Wow, what?” Max said smiling down at her.
“I like when you say our daughter…it’s the first time I think you have ever said. It feels nice,” Liz said quietly
Max thought about it a moment and realized what he had indeed said, “ya…ya it does feel nice saying that.”
With that he leaned in for a more passionate and exciting kiss.
It was electric once he started he couldn’t stop. He deepened the kiss until they just had to break for a moment to catch their breaths. He pulled her dress over her head in one swift motion as he did that she pulled his shirt over his head. He took her hands and led her to the mattress. They laid down slowly and softly on it. Max took her hand into his and kissed her passionately. In that moment of passion the two made love both with urgency and patience.

“That was nice,” Liz said as she placed her head on his bear chest.
He played with her hair as he laid there in contentment, “ya, that was better than nice. It was…uhhh heck there aren’t any words to describe it,” he said with a laugh.
“Oh, come on. With all your knowledge I m sure you can think of some words,” Liz sighed
“hum, you think so huh? Wait…what about you, you were always the one with all the books in your hands,” Max said stroking her hair with his hands.
“Ya, well I was never that smart. I know that, I can live with it. I was always the one who was going to marry young and have a child right out of high school. No wonder my parents up and left me by myself.” Liz muttered to herself.
“Hey! Don’t say those things, what your parents did was unforgivable and you of all people don’t deserve to be treated like that. I mean what kind of parents leave in the middle of the night and leave a precious 5 year old to basically raise herself.” Max said and then he stopped when he realized he was exactly like her parents, he basically ran out on Loretta before she was even born. He was no better than them.
Liz saw the pain in his face and knew what was going through his mind, “hey, don’t do that. You are nothing like my parents. Yes, you technically left, but the main thing is you know what you did was wrong and want to fix it. Ok, so no more sadness mister!” Liz said trying to get a smile out of him. He gave her a weak one and placed her hair behind her ear.
“Hey, let’s share a personal story. One each you say one and I ll say one ok,” Liz said trying to break the unbearable silence.
Max nodded his head slightly.
“So…who wants to go first…ok, ok I will…what do you want to know?” Liz asked Max.
“What was the whole story with your parents?” Max asked quietly.
Liz knew he was curious and nodded in agreement to his question. She sat up and leaned against the wall.
“My dad was a druggie and never home practically, my sister Rose was older than me she was 15, my mom was 15 when she had her. Rose was at 15 already like my dad. She was into drugs and slept around. Anyway, my mom was sick. She had bad depression and was always gone and what not. Rose hated me, I think the whole family did. My dad always said that if they found out sooner about me. I would have been aborted. So, I guess my parents felt that it was better to leave me alone then have to deal with me anymore so they left me in a broken down, home. I was there for a week before Mrs. DeLuca found me and turned me into Foster Care. That was one of the scariest weeks of my life. I stayed in Foster Care ever since,” Liz finished as a single tear escaped her eye. Max reached up and swept it away.
“Why, didn’t Amy and Maria ever take you in. They had enough money?” Max said, feeling pity for Liz.
“They didn’t want to. Truth be told Maria and I aren’t the best of friends, sometimes I don’t even think we are friends. She just felt sorry for me one day and decided to talk to me. I took it as friendship and been the pain in her side ever since…hahaha…she was the only other person who ever talked to me in school,” Liz said shyly trying to hold back the tears.
“I m here,” Max stated taking her hand.
“really?” Liz asked, beginning to cry.
“really,” Max said trying to cheer her up by tickling her.
“ok, ok…ahhh…stop…Hashanah,” Liz screeched.
When everything calmed down, Liz turned to Max, “it’s your turn…tell me… tell me… ok, who was your first true crush? I know that’s an easy one, but it got to emotional based with my question…so say her name and let’s get dressed.” Liz sighed placing her head on his chest.
Max breathed deeply, “the truth huh…ok…my first crush was…well it…was you,” he said.
Hearing this Liz shot her head up and starred at the man in front of her, not thinking she heard him right. She was about to question when the door opened.
“OMG! Ummmm…what time is it?” Liz asked pulling the blanket around her body and looking at the door as it was about to open.
Max grabbed his watch, “3:15...Oh no Loretta, quick get dressed!” Max silently screeched.

Part 6
Max and Liz had just gotten dressed as Loretta came in the apartment.
“Hey, sweetie, How was school?” Liz asked in exhaust.
Loretta just smiled at her mother and gave her the thumbs up, Liz giggled and Loretta sat on the floor by the couch and began to doodle on old news papers and other items the family used for paper.
Both Max and Liz stood and starred at their daughter.
“You know, she could spend hours on end just sitting their and drawing pictures. She loves it, she draws pink horses and purple elephants because she thinks they are unique. The truth is she is unique, I think she is going to be an artist when she gets older,” Liz stated as she kept on starring at Loretta.
“Why? I mean it’s just drawing, don’t kids do that all of the time?” Max asked looking from Liz to Loretta and back again.
“Ya, but in Loretta’s case I think drawing and colouring are her way of communicating to people. Her way of expressing her feelings. Granted she is only eight and she is a little slower then most kids so her pictures aren’t perfection, but I think that’s what she’s trying to say. That we may not be perfect, but it doesn’t mean we quit trying to be. So, ya it’s her way of telling us what she feels…sort of like what you did when you sang and played the guitar for Maria.” Liz said looking up to Max.
“You, knew about that?” Max asked shocked that his secret had been blown.
“Maria, told everyone about her perfect boyfriend. Why don’t you do it anymore?” Liz asked curiously
Max just starred at Loretta, “no more songs to be sang I guess, you know…all the right and good ones have been sang.” Max said emotionless.
Liz just nodded as she looked back at Loretta, “maybe, but isn’t that when a creator finds something or someone else to sing about. Isn’t that when he becomes a true expressionist.” Liz said simply as she walked to the kitchen and began to clean the dishes and wipe the counter.
Max just stood there and starred at Loretta and after about 20 minutes of not blinking or looking away he finally decided to go up to her and ask to sit with her.
He walked up slowly, carefully as if moving around a sleeping lion.
When he finally got to in front of her he breathed in heavy, “ummm…hey, Loretta…remember me, I m Max and I was just wondering…if it was possible…I mean if I could just…uhhh…sit, with-you?” Max stuttered out.
Liz turned around and gave a light giggle to how he was acting.
Loretta looked up and beamed, she patted a place next to her inviting him to sit beside her. Max sat down and placed his arm around the girl and just watched as she drew picture after picture.

Later that night, the three of them had dinner together. They could have easily been mistaken for a perfect family. Max was making jokes and funny faces, which made both girls laugh out in hysterics. Liz would fix each of their plates, it was a perfect evening.
When dinner was over it was late, “well sweetie, time for bed why don’t you go get dressed and brush your teeth in the bathroom ok?” Loretta nodded and kissed her mothers cheek, she leapt out of her seat and before going into the bathroom gave Max a big hug and gave him a piece of paper, which he placed in his pocket.
“Wow, you seem to have a new fan Mr. Evans,” Liz smiled as she began to clean off the table.
“You think?” Max asked standing up with his glass and plate.
“Oh it is obvious,” Liz giggled.
“Now come on, out you go. It’s late and Maria is probably out of her mind wondering where you have been,” Liz said pushing him to the door.
“Well…I was going to help you clean and stuff and…” Max said in defence.
“Nope, you are going home to your wife,” Liz stated simply. Max realized there was no sense in fighting her.
“Ok, ok I m leaving. Geesh, well I know when I m not wanted anymore,” he said as he opened the door.
When outside the door he gave Liz a sweet kiss on the lips.
“Well, I have a meeting tomorrow and court all day. So, I won’t be back over until…Thursday. So I will see you then,” Max said quickly and before Liz could reply he was already down the hall and out of sight.
Liz walked back inside with a wide smile on her face.
When she got back in and closed the door behind her she found her daughter standing in front of her with a smile on her face.
“Come on, time for bed,” Liz said as she tucked her and began to play with her hair and sing to her.
~~~~~
Max walked in to his house quietly and shut the door trying not to make a single noise but…unfortunately…
“where, may I ask were you?” Maria barked as she entered the foyer from the kitchen.
“I was out…just out…” Max sighed heavily
He rubbed his forehead knowing that this was going to be a dozy.
“YOU WHERE OUT! Max you left here at 9 in the morning it is 8:30 no one is just ‘out’ for an entire day! I called the office, thinking you were there, and your ‘lovely’ secretary informed me that you weren’t at work all day today. So, I got to thinking and asked myself where would my husband be, if not at work…so I m going to ask you one more time…WHERE THE HELL WERE YOU?” Maria was beyond just angry.
“awww…Debra…remind me I have to fire my secretary…I don’t have to tell you where I was all day, I don’t question you when you are out all night partying with your ‘friends’ do I? SO JUST LEAVE ME ALONE,” Max barked back.
“NO! Listen I m not stupid I know the only reason you married me because you thought you were doing the honourable and noble thing and of course, there was that little fact that your parents would not have it any other way. I also know that you would never even think of leaving me because that would make you unemployed and oh ya, your family would never look twice at you. So, I get to make the rules, not you buddy. NOW TELL ME WHERE YOU WERE?” Maria screamed.
Max stomped up to her and looked her square in the eyes, “You don’t think I know what your little plan was. You picked me out of tons of people, made me fall in…made me fall for you and then when I thought it was forever, you trampled anything good I ever felt for you. You and my family manipulated me into marrying a women, who only lives for one thing. You…told me you were pregnant with MY CHILD and then once we got married I learn that it wasn’t mine, that you slept with my father! A man I despise and the whole plan was to get me to support a child that was my fathers, all so you could your justice that you thought you deserved and so my mother would never have to know, and now all I am to you and my father is a play toy. Now that there is no more baby, you still think you OWN ME! Guess again!…let me tell you something…I OWN YOU! I only stay in this marriage so that my mother never has to get hurt, she is a kind and loving lady and doesn’t deserve the wrath that the truth of this marriage will do to her and for my own reason...to make yous suffer just like you made me suffer!” Max said as he turned and started up stairs.
“THEN WHY DON’T YOU? HUH…WHY DON’T YOU UP AND LEAVE ME IF YOUR SO MISERABLE WITH ME?” Maria screeched.
“Because, I want to first make you miserable! Oh and by the way,” Max turned on his feet.
“I am having an affair, with Liz and oh…I should tell you that Loretta isn’t Michael’s. She’s mine…see I m already starting to feel better. You see it’s a boomerang baby, and your just starting to feel the come back.” Max stated simply as he walked up the rest of the stairs leaving a breathless and shocked Maria standing there all alone. Oh yes, the boomerang effect is starting to take on it’s real shape now isn’t it.
Max and Liz had just gotten dressed as Loretta came in the apartment.
“Hey, sweetie, How was school?” Liz asked in exhaust.
Loretta just smiled at her mother and gave her the thumbs up, Liz giggled and Loretta sat on the floor by the couch and began to doodle on old news papers and other items the family used for paper.
Both Max and Liz stood and starred at their daughter.
“You know, she could spend hours on end just sitting their and drawing pictures. She loves it, she draws pink horses and purple elephants because she thinks they are unique. The truth is she is unique, I think she is going to be an artist when she gets older,” Liz stated as she kept on starring at Loretta.
“Why? I mean it’s just drawing, don’t kids do that all of the time?” Max asked looking from Liz to Loretta and back again.
“Ya, but in Loretta’s case I think drawing and colouring are her way of communicating to people. Her way of expressing her feelings. Granted she is only eight and she is a little slower then most kids so her pictures aren’t perfection, but I think that’s what she’s trying to say. That we may not be perfect, but it doesn’t mean we quit trying to be. So, ya it’s her way of telling us what she feels…sort of like what you did when you sang and played the guitar for Maria.” Liz said looking up to Max.
“You, knew about that?” Max asked shocked that his secret had been blown.
“Maria, told everyone about her perfect boyfriend. Why don’t you do it anymore?” Liz asked curiously
Max just starred at Loretta, “no more songs to be sang I guess, you know…all the right and good ones have been sang.” Max said emotionless.
Part 7
Max proceeded to his and Maria’s bedroom after the big blow and sat on his bed.
He felt horrible, he had not only betrayed Liz but had completely ruined everything. He wasn’t planning on getting back at Maria, the feelings of pain had just always been there and no matter how much he tried to burry them they must have gotten out and our now playing games with his conscience.
Maria walked into the bedroom and saw Max sitting on the bed starring out into oblivion.
“If…you, ummm…if you want a divorce…I would understand,” Maria said holding back her tears.
Max got up and looked at her, “I don’t know what I want, if I divorce you I loose everything and you will shunned from not only your mother but by everyone, who ever gave a damn about you. As much as I hate you, I don’t want to see that much pain come to anyone. Also, if we divorce and people find out about the affair I…if they find out about Liz…I just don’t want to hurt her like that and Loretta…I won’t hurt them like that.” Max stated quietly as he took off his coat and shoes.
Maria nodded, “maybe…maybe we can work…work on our marriage. You know get it to where it was before we got married and before you found out the truth,” Maria suggested starring at the ground.
“Maria, we never really had a marriage. When I found out about the baby not being mine and your betrayal. There is just no way, I can just forget the fact that you slept with my father. I have tried, trust me I have. For the past eight years, I have done nothing, but try to forgive you and forget it. There’s just no use…because maybe, maybe I will be able to forgive you, but I will never be able to forget what you did, ever. You not only lied and cheated, but you played with my heart. There was a time, where I would have given you the world if you asked for it. I did everything in my powers to make you happy, but it wasn’t enough for you was it?” Max stated as tears came to his eyes.
“Did…that day you found out, did you go to her. Did you go to Liz? Is that when…Loretta. I can’t even say it, I feel sick to my stomach. Just please answer me, was she the one. Was she the one, you always thought about when you weren’t thinking of me, because I m not stupid Max. I know…I know I wasn’t your first choice, because every time you sang to me. The songs where never about me, were they? You loved her. WELL THEN GO TO HER! BE WITH HER!” Maria said tears gushing from her eyes.
“No, because…I won’t betray you the way you betrayed me. My mother, can never find out about you and him. I have promised myself that I will stick through this…this mess of a ‘marriage’ if anything for her sake. Yes, there was a time I thought…that…maybe I loved Liz. Long before I asked you out, but she was with Michael and I figured that’s the way it was all meant to be. That I was kidding myself and so I fell for you. You can dismiss it all you want Maria, but the truth is I did love you. Now, I don’t believe in love anymore,” Max said silently as tears dripped from his face.
“Did…did I do that to you, did I make you not believe in love anymore?” Maria asked stepping closer towards him.
“It wasn’t just you who did it, but my own father as well…I can’t talk about it now ok. SO LET IT GO!” Max stated getting more and more worked up.
Max brushed passed her and went to open their bedroom door, he needed to get a drink, “just…just please don’t say anything about me and Liz. Just forget about it.”
Maria was silent, for a while, “then just promise me the affair is over now, that you got it all out of your system.” Maria stated sighing heavily, deep down inside Maria still loved Max, she always would and to think her best friend was blessed with having his child made her sick.
Max thought for a moment. Maria was right, doing this with Liz would only make matters worse. He should have never started this with her, it was a mistake…a mistake he knew would hunt him for the rest of his life. He had to step out of the picture, he was no father and can never truly give Liz what she wanted more than anything…love.
~~~
Across town Liz was cleaning the dishes, when the door swung open and she quickly turned to see who it was.
“HONEY, I M HOME” yelled Michael in his usual drunken state.
Liz walked up to him slowly, “Michael, your…drunk again. You know you can loose your job if you keep that up.” Liz stated looking him in the eye.
Michael slapped her hard across the face, “shut it women, I didn’t ask for your f***** opinion k. I work hard, long hours and come home and this is THE THANKS I GET! You must have forgotten who was in charge of this place. ME! I get the money, pay the bills so you can have a roof over your head and freaken food in your belly and you can’t even say hello honey, I missed you! Goodness woman!” Michael slurred angrily, walking passed her.
“Michael, Loretta’s sleeping. Please…” Liz cried silently.
She didn’t want Loretta waking up to hear this.
“What did you just say, are you giving me lip lady!” Michael yelled punching again. The punch was so hard it left a bruise and she fell to the ground as blood spilled out of the side of her mouth.
Liz, cried as he hit her more and more. With every hit, it left a different bruise or blood. When he was done, he told her to get up and get him something to eat.
He wasn’t always like that. Only when he was drunk and Max never knew because it was always hidden. Max rarely came over to visit only if he was dropping Maria off for babysitting Loretta and those times were few and far between. Max and Michael had been friends since elementary school. Whenever someone picked on Michael, Max would stick up for him and vice versa. Some times Max would give him a loan if he was falling behind on the bills, without Maria knowing because if she found out, his father would never let him hear the end of it. The two usually met for drinks and that is about the only time they ever got together to talk, so the women were the last things on their minds.
Michael slumped on the sofa and watched TV as he drank another beer. Then he saw it, the shirt.
“Hey, what the hell is this!” Michael yelled stomping up to Liz, holding one of Max’s shirts.
“uhhh…” Liz was freaked, how was she going to answer him.
“uuuhhh… is not an answer Liz. Whose F***** shirt is this? Cause it ain’t mine. Have you been F****** someone else while I m out there working for you…you little ungrateful b****!” Michael yelled as he punched her in the eye.
She fell to the floor and he begin to kick her everywhere. He yelled and yelled and beat her some more.
Just a couple feet a way, Loretta laid there not moving an inch in fear that he would go after her next. So, she lied there pretending to be asleep and waited and waited. Until the yelling was done and the crying from her mother had died down.

Part 8
A few days had came and gone and life was pretty normal for everyone. Liz would clean and get her usual beaten when Michael was drunk. However, she never went to the hospital she would always put ice on her bruises or bandages on her cuts. She didn’t got to the hospital, for one of two reasons either she was completely horrified to let people know what she endured on a daily basis or there wasn’t enough money.
~~~
Max and Maria just ignored each other after the previous fight they had the other night. Max went on with his daily schedule, he would get up by day break, go for a jog and then head to the office. Maria would just go shopping or hang with her mom. Max, still wasn’t sure about what to do with his and Maria’s marriage. He knew it had to end, if not for his sake but for his daughters. However, he couldn’t bring himself to do so. If he did break off the marriage he would be questioned about why, you see, to the average day stranger Max and Maria where the perfect couple. However, behind closed doors their marriage was the mask covering the horrible secret their marriage was based on.
Max sat at his desk, tapping his finger. His mind was running a 100 miles per minute. Where his heart lied, he couldn’t tell anymore. He had no heart, it had been crushed. Everything, he ever knew broke the day he found out the truth. For the past eight years he had been dying inside. What he knew of love was destroyed because of what she did to him. His thoughts were interrupted by a knock at his door. He looked up to find his mother, wheeling in.
“Well, son. Don’t just sit there help wheel your old mother into your massive place, you call an office,” she said with a smile.
Max got up from his chair and walked over to her, “well if, it isn’t my favourite mother,” he said as he bent down and kissed her cheek.
“I’m your only mother and don’t you forget that when I m gone and your father remarries a twenty something bimbo, only in it for his wealth,” she said with a laugh.
Max choked back the tears at what she said, “so…to what do I owe this visit?” Max asked changing the subject as quickly as possible. His mother didn’t notice, just stayed silent.
“Well…I came to talk about…well about what the doctor said, Do you have a minute?” His mother said loosing her joking personality and replacing it with a fragile old lady.
Max stopped the wheel chair in front of his desk and sat back in his chair. He was nervous, she never came all the way to his office unless it was really important.
“Mom, what is it?” Max asked quietly
“Well…it seems the doctors and I finally agree, I m dying. Well, I mean we all do eventually it seems…I guess it is just my time. The doctors give me three more months…before I loose ability to do anything. Apparently, my muscles are failing faster then any of us thought,” his mother said with a gleam in her eye. Trying to keep from completely breaking down.
Max was in tears and placed his hand on his mothers, “Mom…three months, I thought…I thought it would be years and I…don’t want to loose you.”
“Son, you’ll never truly loose me. I m everywhere with you, I am that voice in your head and heart telling you everyday how proud I am of you. You’re a smart and decent man, just promise me that no matter what happens in life you will listen to what’s right and not whatever is the easiest,” his mother said as she carefully lifted her heavy hand and placed it on his.
“…and always remember what I told you since the day you were born…”
Max cleared his throat and relayed the message that she had said to him almost everyday of his life, “Pride like promises can break.” The tears were now completely spilling from his eyes.
“Mom, can I ask you something?” Max said wiping his eyes.
“Sure son, you can ask me anything you know that?”
“What if…what if you knew something that could…ruin everything if it got out. What if, you were helping to keep a secret…because…you knew if anyone else knew it could hurt not only someone you love but, also, someone you thought for a long time you loved?” Max said looking into his mothers eyes.
“Well…I guess I would have to wonder why this person is still in this mess, if he or she was just a victim in this as well and this secret has hurt him or her in the process of trying to keep it. If his or her well being is worth loosing, just to keep what he or she wants to stay the same…well just that the same. Sometimes Maxwell, for us to move forward we have to let go of what we want to be true. Even, even if it seems too hard and unfair, we have to. Because, if we don’t we are just sleepwalking through our lives. Trying to build a fantasy out of what used to be is like trying to build a sand castle too close to the water, you maybe able to do it but eventually something will come and take it down. Rebuilding, Maxwell is sometimes more difficult then letting go of what you used to know…does that help?” His mom looked up to her son who had gotten up and walked over to look out his window.
Max turned his head and looked at his mom, “ya…ya it does…mom…I…have…I have to go for a minute. Can you have my secretary help you down stairs?” He grabbed his coat and ran out the office. He was on a mission. His mother just smiled and shook her head.
“Maria! Maria! You home…I have decided, I want a div…oh! There you are!” Max yelled coming into the living room and saw Maria sitting on the couch crying.
“Maria, you ok?” Max asked sitting down beside her.
“No…Max…I have to tell you something…” Maria said tears gushing out of her eyes.
“Ya, I have to tell you something as well, Maria…I want…” Max started.
“Max, I m pregnant.”
A few days had came and gone and life was pretty normal for everyone. Liz would clean and get her usual beaten when Michael was drunk. However, she never went to the hospital she would always put ice on her bruises or bandages on her cuts. She didn’t got to the hospital, for one of two reasons either she was completely horrified to let people know what she endured on a daily basis or there wasn’t enough money.
Max and Maria just ignored each other after the previous fight they had the other night. Max went on with his daily schedule, he would get up by day break, go for a jog and then head to the office. Maria would just go shopping or hang with her mom. Max, still wasn’t sure about what to do with his and Maria’s marriage. He knew it had to end, if not for his sake but for his daughters. However, he couldn’t bring himself to do so. If he did break off the marriage he would be questioned about why, you see, to the average day stranger Max and Maria where the perfect couple. However, behind closed doors their marriage was the mask covering the horrible secret their marriage was based on.
Max sat at his desk, tapping his finger. His mind was running a 100 miles per minute. Where his heart lied, he couldn’t tell anymore. He had no heart, it had been crushed. Everything, he ever knew broke the day he found out the truth. For the past eight years he had been dying inside. What he knew of love was destroyed because of what she did to him. His thoughts were interrupted by a knock at his door. He looked up to find his mother, wheeling in.
“Well, son. Don’t just sit there help wheel your old mother into your massive place, you call an office,” she said with a smile.
Max got up from his chair and walked over to her, “well if, it isn’t my favourite mother,” he said as he bent down and kissed her cheek.
“I’m your only mother and don’t you forget that when I m gone and your father remarries a twenty something bimbo, only in it for his wealth,” she said with a laugh.
Max choked back the tears at what she said, “so…to what do I owe this visit?” Max asked changing the subject as quickly as possible. His mother didn’t notice, just stayed silent.
“Well…I came to talk about…well about what the doctor said, Do you have a minute?” His mother said loosing her joking personality and replacing it with a fragile old lady.
Max stopped the wheel chair in front of his desk and sat back in his chair. He was nervous, she never came all the way to his office unless it was really important.
“Mom, what is it?” Max asked quietly
“Well…it seems the doctors and I finally agree, I m dying. Well, I mean we all do eventually it seems…I guess it is just my time. The doctors give me three more months…before I loose ability to do anything. Apparently, my muscles are failing faster then any of us thought,” his mother said with a gleam in her eye. Trying to keep from completely breaking down.
Max was in tears and placed his hand on his mothers, “Mom…three months, I thought…I thought it would be years and I…don’t want to loose you.”
“Son, you’ll never truly loose me. I m everywhere with you, I am that voice in your head and heart telling you everyday how proud I am of you. You’re a smart and decent man, just promise me that no matter what happens in life you will listen to what’s right and not whatever is the easiest,” his mother said as she carefully lifted her heavy hand and placed it on his.
“…and always remember what I told you since the day you were born…”
Max cleared his throat and relayed the message that she had said to him almost everyday of his life, “Pride like promises can break.” The tears were now completely spilling from his eyes.
“Mom, can I ask you something?” Max said wiping his eyes.
“Sure son, you can ask me anything you know that?”
“What if…what if you knew something that could…ruin everything if it got out. What if, you were helping to keep a secret…because…you knew if anyone else knew it could hurt not only someone you love but, also, someone you thought for a long time you loved?” Max said looking into his mothers eyes.
