Chapter 10:

Serena looked at the clock ticking on the wall. She watched as the little red dial clicked second by second and she waited impatiently. Finally, there was a final click and then the loud ring from the bell. She stood up quickly trying to gather all her belongings. Now, they were all headed to the Evans’ house for a meeting. Just like the old days. Seemed she never escape from the alien madness, not even in this world.

She reached the parking lot and looked around when she caught Maria and Alex gathered near the red Jetta. She sped up a bit, hoping to reach them quickly, the security of a group becoming something she craved.

“Ready?”

“Yup.”

“Ok hop in.” They all jumped in and began to ride off, headed toward the direction of the house.

“This is so crazy.”

“Maria are you still freaking out about the whole… Czechoslovakian thing?” Alex looked to the back seat and laughed.

“The what?”

“Czechoslovakian. It was the code name for you them.”

“Interesting code name.”

“Well, whatever you call them, doesn’t it bother you that they really did crash land here in the forties? I mean, am I the only one that seems to notice that these kids are really like in their 80s?”

“No… that’s not how it worked. From what I remember, they were in these pods where they gestated and when they… hatched, I guess you could say, they looked like 6 year old kids.”

“Euww… pods? They hatched?! Oh God, this just gets weirder and weirder.”

“Well you know Maria, it wasn’t exactly attractive the way you were born. Last I checked you came out full of yucky guck screaming and crying after having pushed your way out of your mother’s vagi…” Alex stated as a matter of factly.

“HEY HEY HEY! I’m not the only one who came out like that ok? They on the other hand came out of pod thingies.”

“Ok guys. We’re here. Oh and Maria… please just try to be nice. After all, these people are trying to save my life. Besides, you can’t deny the fact that you think Michael is hot.”

“What?! Michael?! I never… you never… oh shut up.” They laughed and reached the door, the Jeep already parked in the driveway.

Serena walked up to the door and knocked and it swung open to reveal Max Evans with a smile on his face and a twinkle of laughter in his eyes.

“Hey.” She asked, curiously.

“Hey guys. Glad you could make it. Mom just finished our appetizers so if any of you are hungry, there are chips and dip and mini quiche thingies.” He rolled his eyes and she laughed. His mom was obviously a little over the top. Then again, it just showed how much she loved them.

They all walked in and saw Isabel, Tess and Michael sitting in the dining room, snacking on the food, waiting patiently. It all seemed so normal, so pleasant. Nothing seemed to be wrong or life threatening. They’d made a career out of lying to their mother.

“Dinner is almost ready kids. When it is I’ll call you all down ok?” She watched as Mrs. Evans smiled and headed back into the kitchen, a pleasant smell of herbs and meats cooking wafting in the air. They all picked up their things and headed up the stairs behind Isabel into Max’s room. She looked around, her stomach flipping from the times she’d gone to see him. Then she watched as Isabel closed the door behind her and turned around, her smile quickly fading.

Everyone stood in stunned silence and watched her as she stood quietly, her eyes looking down at her hands.

“Ok… what’s with the brooding silence?” Maria asked nervously. She looked around as Max and Tess sat on the edge of the bed, Alex leaned up against the wall, and Michael paced around nervously. Isabel was still leaning against the door.

“I didn’t want to lead on that something was wrong. Mom gets really worked up when we seem upset.”

“What did you find out there Isabel?” Serena looked up at her suspiciously. Isabel got up from her leaning position and headed over to Max and Tess to sit in the space between them on the bed. Max reached into his pocket and pulled out a folded piece of paper. Everyone turned in his direction as he carefully unfolded it.

“This is a rough sketch of what we found. It was behind the pods. We have no idea what it is or what it does. But… it looks like it might be really important.” They all stared at the diagram with the large cone in the middle.

“Wow… it looks… massive.” Alex explored it by tilting his head and Serena looked at it carefully.

“Do you recognize it?” Isabel asked eagerly, obviously having thought about it quite a bit.

“No. I’ve never seen it. I guess we hadn’t found it yet in our time.”

“Well it seems to be made of crushed granite and cement and it’s thick, in the shape of a cone that dives into a natural rock. It looked like quartz but I’m not sure.”

“Granite? It’s a granolith. A carving stone made of those materials is called a granolith. But… why would it lead into a quartz?” Serena racked her brain for a possible answer. She knew there was a reason for this. After all, the people back on their planet were technologically advanced. They did manage to form perfect hybrid mixtures of human/alien DNA.

“Well, this granolith seemed to have some foreign writing carved into the bottom of it and the walls were lined with what seemed to be metal sheets. I mean, it looked like some crazy sci-fi movie room.” Isabel rubbed her hands together tightly and looked over at Tess.

“It was completely black inside which leads me to believe that it’s hollow. Not completely full of the stones it is made of.”

“It has to hold some sort of power. Why would it be hidden away if it didn’t?” Maria asked her eyes looked at them curiously.

“That’s a good point. How do we find out? Should we go and test it?” Michael headed towards the door ready to leave.

“Michael… we can’t just test it. We don’t know what it will do and if it’s something big, we might draw a lot of attention to ourselves. We have to be careful how we figure this out.” Max stood up and now began pacing as well.

“I wish there was someone who could help us understand this!” He said frustrated as he slid his hand through his hair.

“I think I know just the person.” Serena looked down at the paper and nodded. “I’ll talk to her tonight.”

They all looked up and nodded.

“KIDS! Dinner’s ready!”

***

She looked up at the large spaceship flying over the door. God, how she missed her room, her bed. She wanted so badly to go upstairs and rummage through her clothes. But she knew what would happen if she did. She looked over at her partner in crime and smiled.

“You don’t think she’ll find this suspicious?”

“Are you kidding me? She loves talking about this stuff! Come on.” They walked inside and Maria commanded her to sit at the counter on one of the stools. “I’ll be back. Don’t move.” Maria headed upstairs and she sat, taking it all in.

Every experience here seemed so odd to her. Part of her memories still haunted her and then there was the new part of her, the part that wanted to pierce her nose and go dancing that seemed to take over sometimes. The part that she remembered what she learned in Biology but couldn’t for her life understand it. The part that knew she couldn’t sing but made her want to play the drums in the band with Alex and Maria. It was like she was torn between two personalities constantly trying to take a hold of her.

She was torn from her thoughts by the sound of footsteps coming from the backdoor. She prepared for Maria but what she saw threw her completely off guard.

“Mr. Parker….”

“Oh…hello. I didn’t know Maria had brought a friend.” He tried to smile, his face looking old and beaten.

“Yes, umm… my name is Serena.”

“Hello Serena.” He began to fix things up and then he reached under the counter for a rag with which he began to wipe aimlessly.

“Mr. Parker, I am so sorry about your loss. I know things must be very difficult for you right now.” He looked up, his sad eyes looking into hers for a moment. He then looked back down and continued his wiping.

“Thank you. It hasn’t been easy.”

“I just… everyone has said that you were such a wonderful father to her. And looking at you now, I can tell that is very true.” She tried to contain her tears, the ones attacking her from every angle.

He stopped the wiping and took a deep breath.

“I just wish I could’ve told her how much I love her.” He nodded and suddenly Maria and Claudia walked in through the back doors.

“Mom.”

“Oh Jeff, you look awful honey. Why don’t you take a break from cleaning up and go take a nice hot shower? I’ll finish up down here.”

“Come on Mom, you know you shouldn’t be doing all this work.”

“Please… go shower and leave it. I’ll take care of it. Now shoot.” He smiled and excused himself as Serena tried to regain her composure. She wasn’t sure she was going to be able to do this for much longer.

“Now Serena, how are you dear? I hear you wanted to see me.”

“Oh, hello Grandma Claudia. I’m fine… umm… yea I wanted to ask you some questions. Maria told me that you’re really into science and the Earth and natural elements.”

“Well, I do extensive reading and research on those sort of things. I’m very interested in what the relationship is that we have to the Earth. After all, dust we are and to dust we do return.”

“Well, what do you make of this shape?” She handed the folded piece of paper to Grandma Claudia and held her breath, the lights above the counter casting individual light on each of them.

“Interesting.”

“What is?”

“This looks like a machine that would make time travel possible.”

“Time travel?”

“Yes. See it follows all of the concepts.” She pointed to the cone and looked up at the girls with a knowing expression. “The cone opens up top, allowing space for the big black hole which is necessary in the propelling of intense energy to boost someone from one time dimension to the next.”

Maria stared at her blankly. She had to admit, she felt the same. Was this even possible?

“Isn’t time travel a false theory? I mean, doesn’t it violate like all sorts of scientific laws?”

“Well, not necessarily. You see, to understand the concept of time travel, you have to see time for what it really is.”

“And what is it?”

“It’s not a straight line, as most people assume it is. Time exists in several different dimensions. And according to the special theory of relativity, we can jump to and from these different dimensions if we use a strong enough power source, which would be propelled by a natural atomic element, such as crystal.”

“So wait, you’re saying that we can take a few diamond rings and they can boost up enough energy to send us back to 1912?” Maria’s eyebrows went up questioningly. This obviously seemed too easy.

“No. You see, there’s more to it than that. A person would need a large amount of energy to start the changing of the atomic structure which would then send a person to and fro in time. The only problem is, we as humans are not quite advanced enough to have found such an energy source.”

“And what about time paradox?” Serena asked, suddenly piecing everything together.

“As for that theory, we’d have to assume that each time dimension is like an alternate universe, where the actions in this world do not affect the ones in the other. Otherwise, if a mistake was made during your travels and say you killed your grandmother… well that would mean you were never born and then could never travel. Does that make sense?”

“Yea… actually in a really weird way it does.”

“So therefore, there are several dimensions all with their own realities and they are all affected differently. There is no telling how one affects the other, since there has never been anyone to successfully try it.”

The girls looked at each other and smiled.

“Thank you so much Grandma Claudia.” They both got up and hugged her, one on each side and then they all began laughing.

“What is this all about anyway?”

“I told Serena that you’re a genius and that you know everything so she should ask you for her science project.”

“Well… if you’re planning on traveling back in time… be careful. You don’t know what you may encounter when you get there.”

“Yea… I’ll keep that in mind.” She smiled and waved goodbye to Grandma Claudia. They headed out the door and into the Jetta where Alex sat waiting.

“So?”

“I think we have a plan.”

A/N: Hello all. I'm back... I've gotten some rest and I feel a little better. Thank you all so much for your concern. I feel so loved. :D Now, back to this little world I've created. You all seem to have concerns about certain things... well let me give you a few answers. Just keep in mind... this new world we're living in is full of new possibilites. No one is confined to their old lives and what makes it so special is that many events that made people who they were have never happened... so how do we react to new events to new circumstances?

Chapter 11:

They walked around inside the chamber and looked at the large image before them. The seven of them were sitting and standing all over the small room, looking at it from every angle, trying to figure out how to get it to work.

“Are you sure that’s what this thing is for?” Michael stood up from his crouching position and crossed his arms over his chest.

“Well, I’m not sure if it’s all it does. But I know that it is capable of it. From what I learned, this is your own little portable time travel machine.”

“How do we get it to start?”

“Thankfully we only need two things. A crystal power source and some very strong energy, which you all have plenty of right at your fingertips.” Serena smiled and touched the cone with her hand. She wasn’t sure this was going to work, but it was her only choice. But the fears plagued her. What if in her quest to go back to the future, she failed and went further back in time, or went to a different future? After all, as Grandma Claudia said, time’s dimensions could easily be confused.

“So what now?” Isabel and Tess looked over at Serena and she looked over at Max, a smile on her face. She would enjoy all her time left. She would enjoy it to the fullest because she did not know where she would be after this.

“Ummm… do you guys know the quartz crystal in Mr. Seligman’s class? The one he uses to explain how light travels and breaks into colors?”

“Yea. He’s been obsessing about it since we got to school. And we’re not even in his physics class.” Max rolled his eyes in amusement.

“Well, we’re going to steal it.” They all stopped and looked over at her with wide eyes.

“Are you serious? He’s going to notice it’s gone you know. He won’t be very happy about it.”

“I’ll be gone before he knows it and then you guys can return it. We need the crystal.”

“But… well… steal it? Can’t we like borrow it?” Isabel looked around uncomfortably.

“Isabel… you lie to protect yourselves, stealing this to save my life is ok. Besides, you’re going to return it. So technically, it is borrowing it.”

“Right.” She nodded in reluctant agreement and they all stood in silence for a few more seconds.

“What if this doesn’t work?” Max looked at Serena, his eyes full of anxiety and concern. They all stared over at her now, their own eyes betraying their thoughts. They had all been thinking the same thing.

“It will work. It has to work.” Tess said and looked over at Serena with a sad smile. She was right. It just had to work.

“Ok. So let’s get to school. We’ll have a normal day. We’ll meet up after school. Then, we do this tonight.” Max stated and headed towards the exit, with everyone getting up to follow.

They all got in their cars and headed towards the main road, off to a normal day at school. Serena sat in the back, her head hurting, and her heart feeling heavy. She was afraid of what was to come. Afraid of the future.

“You’re too quiet.” Maria looked through her rearview mirror, her eyes searching Serena’s for some sign of normalcy.

“I’m scared.”

The car was silent for a moment and Alex turned to look back at her.
“Don’t be. After everything you’ve seen, everything you’ve been through. This will work. I have to believe it will.” He smiled sadly and reached out to hold her hand. She squeezed his hand, taking comfort from him, knowing very well that this was all going to end soon. But how?

***

She opened her locker as she looked down at her watch. It was the break between third and fourth period. Then there’d be lunch soon. She was actually surprisingly hungry. She put in her books and pulled out her notebook. She watched as a small sheet fell from the notebook and she bent down to retrieve it. She opened it from its half fold and looked at the familiar writing.

Meet me in the eraser room after third period. ~Max

She felt her heart skip a momentary beat. The eraser room. She knew of the things that happened in the eraser room. Or at least the things she herself had done there. And the things she suddenly blushed at wanting to do again.

She pulled her backpack tightly up against her body and walked slowly towards the room. She looked around and opened the door as she stepped in. He was standing in the dark, his face turned away, when suddenly he turned to face her, his beautiful eyes looking worried.

“Serena.” She smiled and closed the door behind her.

“Max.”

“I just wanted to talk to you.” She nodded and sat down, looking over at him as he went to sit beside her.

“About what?”

“I’m worried. I… I’m not convinced this is going to work.” She looked at him and smiled, knowing very well he was going to say something along those lines.

“Max, you don’t have to worry about me. Seriously, I’ll be fine.”

“Serena….” He looked down, his hands wrapped tightly together, and then back up to look at her, his eyes looking intensely into her own. “I don’t want to lose you again.”

She looked up, her eyes suddenly filling with tears.

“You could never lose me.”

She leaned in and kissed his cheek. They sat for a few moments, and finally she stood ready to head back to class.

“Is it wrong that I’m scared?”

“No. Because I’m scared too.”

“Ok.” He said with a shy smile and grabbed her hand. “I believe in you.” He whispered and she smiled, knowing the truth in his words.

“I won’t disappoint you.” She smiled and he hugged her one last time before he walked out of the room first. She stood for a few moments, watching as his shadow walked out and down the hall. She waited and went to open the door when she felt a cold breeze sweep her hair.

“Serena, we have to talk.” She turned to see the blue eyes before her. The eyes she had struggled in this life to trust. And the ones she wasn’t completely sure she should.

“Ok.”

“Let’s go somewhere.” They stepped out onto the quad and Tess walked at her side silently, her eyes downcast, the air around them tense.

“Max told me that… that you’re from the future.”

“Well… technically. But, things are quite different now.”

“What do you mean?”

“The future I was from has a different past.”

“Is that how you recognized me?”

“Yes.”

“I got a feeling from you. A negative feeling. Like there’s some bad blood between us. So I wanted to ask you… what happened in the other life?” There was a silence and Serena stopped, turning to look at Tess, her eyes exploring the sincerity of her words.

“Are you serious?”

“I just… I want to know what happens.”

“It’s not going to happen Tess. Technically, my coming back has changed everything.”

“Then why do you still look at me that way?”

“What way?” Serena looked down, her eyes meeting her feet momentarily and then back up to meet Tess’ blues.

“There’s a silent hatred in your eyes.”

“It’s… it’s not hatred.”

“Whatever I did must have hurt you deeply.” Tess reached her hand over and placed it softly on the shoulder of the woman before her. Serena looked at her hand and then back up at Tess’ eyes. There was something different there she didn’t recognize. A soul within the bright blue eyes that hadn’t been there before.

“Don’t you know about the Destiny?”

“Destiny? What ours?”

“Yes. I mean, hasn’t Nasedo told you all of it?”

“Serena, since he came to rescue me from the cave, our protector has been drilling in my head that the mission is to get the others and go back. That one day we have to be prepared to fight our enemies and be the strong royal four. Then I came here and I saw Max and Isabel and Michael and how much they love their lives. And for the first time I felt an envy I’ve never felt before. He doesn’t even remember me or our planet or anything about us. And frankly… I kinda wish I didn’t either.”

She couldn’t believe what she was hearing. The destiny-obsessed Tess she had known did not exist in this world. In fact, she was sick of it all being shoved down her throat. All she wanted was peace. And in some way, she understood that. Tess had always been the less human of the four; not surprisingly, since her entire upbringing was with a murdering shape-shifting alien.

“Look, I’m not saying that I’m ashamed of what I am. I’m half alien half human, there’s nothing I can do that will change that. But… having friends… having family; I’d love to know what that feels like. I’m… I’m tired of being alone.” She saw the tears well up in her eyes and suddenly felt a pang in her heart. She never in a million years thought it was possible to feel anything for the woman before her. She reached out and hugged her, taking her tightly into her arms.

“You’re not alone.” They held each other for a few moments and then turned as they saw the watchful eye of Kyle Valenti upon them.

“What is this? Like the beginning of some girl on girl action? Cause seriously, nobody bothered to call me first.” He raised his eyebrows and they laughed, as Tess walked up seductively to Kyle and then pinched his nipple.

“OUCH!”

“Give me a call whenever you want the other one squeezed.” Tess smiled and shook her head as they walked back into the school and the bell rang for lunch.

“Did she just hit on me?”

“Goodbye Kyle.” They walked into the building and stopped for a moment before splitting ways.

“Thank you… for hearing me out. I guess I just kinda felt I was walking around with this demon, you know?” Serena nodded and smiled and after another awkward moment, Tess turned to leave.

“Tess?”

“Yea?”

“Thank you. You have no idea how much that has all meant to me.” Tess smiled and looked at her a bit surprised. She nodded and then turned around and disappeared down the hall within the crowd of people.

A/N: SO SORRY this took SOOO LONG. I hope you all understand. But, here I am. With the next chapter.

Chapter 12:

She sat in the dark room alone, a hint of the setting sun coming through the closed blinds. She kept her eyes closed, her mind focused on the task at hand.

“Keep your head clear except for one thing. Your mission.” She listened to the voice and allowed herself to clear her mind. She knew it probably seemed absolutely ridiculous. But she was terrified. Terrified of the outcome of tonight’s actions. All she could hope for… pray for was that things would work out her way. She had always had complete control, she could always rationalize her life. Now… she just had to believe.

“Serena? You’re distracted.”

“I know… I’m sorry.” She opened her eyes and felt the stare of Maria DeLuca even through the darkness.

“Look, you have to make sure that your body and mind are in synch, or else this whole thing may not go as planned. We don’t know what that massive thing is capable of… we have to make sure that you’re ready.”

“Maria… I might never be able to go back to my time. I might never be able to live the life I wanted with the people I love. And even though I have another chance to do things differently here… to be honest, I don’t want it if it means leaving out my family and my friends. I… need you guys.”

“I don’t know… I mean… it seems like a dream come true, to be able to go back and change your life. To be able to right the wrongs. It’s what everyone wants. What everyone would wish for.”

“That wish has caused you all immeasurable pain and suffering, that still hasn’t stopped with the Parkers. They are going to forever look at that corner and remember their dead little girl.”

“But you saved Max and Michael and Isabel. Isn’t that what you wanted?”

“Saved them from what? From Tess? I was so afraid of what being alien was doing to Max. So afraid of how it might change him. I was too scared myself to notice that wasn’t the issue at all.”

“Then what was the issue?”

“That no matter where we are or who we are… we’re all connected. None of us are going to escape this secret. None of us are going to go at it alone. And regardless of what might NOT happen in this life… there are still many, many things that CAN happen… things that may have been even worse than where I come from.” They sat in silence for a few moments. “I might die doing this Maria.”

The room seemed to suddenly stand still, as if it had been slowly swirling the entire time. The darkness made it seem sudden and abrupt. But she knew it was her swirling thoughts that confused her.

“No. No, you can’t die.”

“But I might.”

“Why are you saying that?” She could hear the change in Maria’s voice. She was getting upset, the sound of her tears in her throat was evident in her shaky words.

“Because I’m not meant to be here.” There was a long silence and she suddenly felt a cold hand on hers.

“I’m not pretending to understand what has happened here. It’s been an awfully long two weeks. But I do know that you fit here. Serena… this has been so weird. And when Liz died… well… you know… I just, I thought that life was over. But your being here has shown me… has shown ALL of us that there is so much more to life. That this life we have known deserves a much larger purpose. And that there is ultimately a master plan.”

“Do you really believe that?”

“I think maybe God is giving you the chance to see why you need us. Why changing your life so drastically by dying is not necessarily the practical solution. Maybe the lesson to be learned here is despite the bad things… as bad as they may seem at the time… can only get better. And maybe, this might be stretching it, but maybe the little green people need us to survive.”

She thought about her last words and the image flashed through her mind. It was dark, the water was cold and she held onto him tightly. He could barely walk and she was dragging him by the arm, repeating the same sentence over and over. They needed to get out of there. She thought of all the horrible things they did to him, the way he shook in her arms, and felt her heart go out to him. She would not let them get him again. She vowed it to herself. It was her job to help protect the man she loved.

“Serena. Serena are you alright?” She looked up suddenly, a trace of worried eyes slightly visible in the dark.

“I’m fine. Maria… we have to do this. We have to.”

“We will.” They stood up and headed out to the living room as Maria grabbed the keys to the Jetta. Alex knocked twice and after looking through the living room window, walked in and stood before them, looking at the two ladies.

“Are you ready?” He asked, his eyes obviously worried and full of concern.

“It’s now or never.”

“Do or die.”

“Right.”

He smiled and turned, willing the girls to follow. They stopped at the car and he opened the front door.

“It’s time.”

***

She looked around the cave in silence, taking in the sights and sounds. She’d only been there perhaps once or twice but none of it seemed familiar anymore. She was living a life that was not her past, a life that was much different and yet eerily the same. She tried to focus on her mission but could feel her heart beating fast. She was terrified. There was no way of knowing what would happen.

“Serena?” She looked up and saw the concerned eyes of Isabel Evans. She was standing beside Alex, his hand on her shoulder and they both stood before her looking down. She was sitting on the floor of the cave, completely focused and out of touch with reality.

“Yea?”

“Are you ok?”

“Yes…. Ummm I think so.”

“We won’t let you down.” Isabel tried to smile but it was obvious in her eyes that she was concerned.

“I know. I trust you.” Serena smiled and stood up just as Max and Michael walked in nodding at the group. Things were going to be starting soon. Maria walked in closer from her spot against the wall, and the six of them stood in a circle simply awaiting some sort of instruction. Max looked into her eyes, his eyes holding an expression she recognized. She looked at him, her eyes sad and concerned.

“Ok. Tess is on her way. Once we’re all here, we’re going into the chamber and we’re going to see if we can get that thing started. Do you have the crystal?”

Maria pulled it out of her purse and waved it up in the air.

“Good. So… this is it.” They all looked at Serena and she looked down sadly. “Maybe as Tess gets here you can take some time to say your goodbyes.”

She nodded in response and was surprised by the incredible connection she felt with all these people. After all… she was the stranger that they embraced and took in… no questions asked. She had gotten what she came for. A glimpse of life without Liz Parker and how it affected everyone involved. It didn’t change anything. There was still risk of exposure, there was still Tess and Nasedo. There was still regular teenage problems. But what she realized was probably the most important lesson of all. Without that other life… none of them were given the opportunity to grow and to build relationships and to feel… to really feel and fall in love and experience one of the most human emotions. And when she weighed it all, she wouldn’t give that up, not knowing how much he loved her in return.

The group went to separate areas of the cave as Maria and Alex stood around Serena.

“I’m not good with goodbyes.” She said as she felt Maria’s arms swing around her.

“Whatever happened… I’m thankful that you were sent when you were. When I lost Liz, I thought that I wouldn’t be able to deal. And then you came and showed me that there was so much more to life. So much that I needed to explore. And you helped ease the pain. So thank you.” Maria squeezed her tight and then pulled away, fighting her tears.

Alex came in for a hug as well, and now Serena was beginning to feel the lump of tears in her throat.

“Thank you for believing in me when no one else would.”

“Are you kidding? I was supposed to. There’s no way that I would let you have been alone. Just… don’t forget us.”

She laughed, the irony of his words hitting her.

“I’m going back to you all. It’s you who are all going to forget this ever happened.” She hugged him tightly and then he smiled as he headed to try and comfort Maria.

She stood by herself for a moment when Michael walked up to her, his usual serious face on. She wasn’t sure what he was going to say, after all, she hadn’t had the opportunity to truly befriend him.

“I didn’t want to believe you. Because that would mean that your life was dependant on ours. But when you shared all the things you knew about us… about the cave, I guess I couldn’t ignore it. I’ve been looking for answers my whole life. Now, I have some. So thanks.”

“Of course.” She nodded and smiled feeling like she’d done something important, something good. Isabel walked up and Michael walked away as Serena took a deep breath. Isabel had played a surprisingly important role in this entire thing. She had embraced her which didn’t make sense, considering their relationship in the past. Seeing what Isabel was capable of, seeing the Isabel she currently knew, she felt the need to run home. To tell them all it would alright because they’re together.

“I don’t really know what to say except that being who I am has made it very clear that anything is possible. Saying that, I guess I feel awful that we were so hesitant to let anyone in for so long. I was just so scared, you know? Terrified that people would run.”

“Isabel, what you are doesn’t change who you are. You’re still an incredible person with so much to offer to your friends and families. We would never run.”

“I know… I know that now.” They hugged for a brief moment and Isabel smiled. “Don’t worry. We’ll get you back home.” Serena smiled and nodded, believing with her whole heart that Isabel meant every word.

Then… it was as if time slowed. Max walked up to her, his eyes on hers the entire time. She didn’t want to say goodbye. She didn’t want to leave him because she was afraid of going back to a time without him. And she wasn’t sure if she could deal with that.

“I don’t even know what to say to you.”

“I know I’ve kind of turned your lives upside down. I’m sorry about that.”

“No, that’s not what I mean. What I mean is how do I say goodbye to you and lose both you and Liz in the same month?” She looked at him suddenly, the shock evident in her eyes.

“Max….”

“Just, let me say this. I always wanted to tell her, to let her really see me for me. But I couldn’t. And now, you come here and you know and you tell me that telling her resulted in the most incredible love imaginable and I feel how it stabs at my heart because I never got that chance. Except for you. You were our miracle.”

She looked at him, his feelings hanging on his very sleeve and she felt her heart beat.

“I want to feel everything that I was supposed to feel.”

“So do I.” She whispered as she craved home. Then he grabbed her face and kissed her, a kiss that tasted of sadness. A final goodbye. He pulled away and she looked into his eyes, the eerie lights of the pods shining on his sad face.

He reached down and grabbed her hands and squeezed them tight. Then the cave shook.

Tess appeared at the entrance, her eyes wild and her breathing ragged.

“We have to do this now!” Everyone jumped to attention and looked over. Isabel looked around and stepped forward heading toward Tess.

“What’s going on? Tess, what’s wrong?”

“Nasedo. He found out and he’s on his way.”

A/N: Here is the new chapter I promised you all! It is now coming to a close. What will happen to Serena? And will Liz be able to return home?

And thanks a TON to Hybrid-Angel who created this lovely banner.

Chapter 13:

They stood in the Granolith chamber, the walls suddenly shaking as everything seemed to glow with a bright light.

“Time is running out Max, we have to hurry.” Tess yelled out from her spot across the Granolith. Michael and Isabel on the opposite sides of them. They all held their hand out against the cone, a swirling light forming inside. They extended their energy, trying hard to get it ready. She only prayed it would work. It was her last chance to get home.

“Anything?” Isabel yelled out as she turned her head momentarily toward the pods. There was a pause and then the sound of Maria’s voice.

“No. Not yet.”

“Are you sure?” There was a long silence and then Tess dropped her hand away from the Granolith. They all looked over at her in surprise. There was a panic in her eyes as she stepped away from the giant swirling light inside the cone.

“Tess!”

“He’s here.”

“What?”

‘He’s here!”

“How do you know?” They all stopped and stepped away looking around the room.

“Because she knows me.” His voice was loud and deep, with a frightening timber of finality as he looked at them.

“How did….?” Michael looked at him in shock and then over at Max. He walked in from the opening of the chamber and smirked.

“What you children don’t seem to understand is that I am everywhere. It’s my job. I am your protector and I am to make sure you don’t do anything stupid. Like this.”

“We don’t have a choice.” Max answered in response with a frustrated sigh. They needed to hurry up before they lost this opportunity.

“Don’t let your human emotions cloud your reasoning. She is not worth losing your only way home.” Everyone stopped suddenly, all of their eyes falling upon a startled Serena. She felt trapped, her back against the wall.

“Our way home?” Isabel questioned while looking at Michael and Tess. Both of their eyes seemed wide with awe and interest.

“Are you sure that’s even possible?” Tess stepped up closer to the man she considered her father for so long. There was full blown anger in her eyes. “Why wouldn’t you tell me that? Why wouldn’t you mention that there was a ship and that there was a way other than the whole destiny crap you’ve been feeding me all these years!??”

“Watch it.” His voice was low and venomous. “You ARE the reigning queen of Antar and your place is beside your husband… the King.” He looked toward Max as they all froze and stared. Serena felt the breath catch in her throat. King? He was the King? Why didn’t she remember that? She rummaged her mind for some sort of mention of a royal position and found nothing. This was news, even to her.

“King? I am no king. I’m Max Evans and I’m in high school.”

“I beg to differ. And for your information, the fate of an entire planet rests in your hands, as your job is to return to the planet and save the people from the rebel alliances that have formed. This, the Granolith, is your only way.”

They turned to look at Serena. Her eyes now wide with shock. Nasedo stepped closer to her and his eyes looked at her menacingly.

“Have any of you bothered to ask yourself how this woman has so many answers? How she knows so much about you all? You are all very naïve if you think you have no enemies. And those enemies can be very powerful….”

“NO! No, don’t you dare try to turn them on me. I know what I know.” Serena turned to look at the group, their eyes already holding her in question. She needed to act soon or she would lose her chance forever. “Max, you know, you saw.”

“I… I know what I felt….”

“Feelings! What a waste. Don’t you realize what she has done? She has convinced you all through her conniving ways to waste your only salvation. Simply trusting her instinct is not enough. Do any of you even know if this whole trip will be possible? Time travel?”

“Oh I didn’t see you as much of a skeptic after you traveled thousands of light years from space!” Maria yelled out from behind them all. She and Alex stood with their arms crossed together. They would not let her down. For now, it seemed they were the only ones who truly believed her.

“What are they doing here? MORE humans?” Max stepped up, his body blocking the group within the chamber behind him.

“Yes, more humans. After all, we are living on Earth and have to blend in, don’t we? We wouldn’t want to get caught… by any of our enemies.”

“Humans are a part of those enemies! They make you weak! They make you forget! This is NOT the real life. Tess, you know that! You remember.” She looked around nervously and shook her head in denial.

“I know only what you’ve made me believe. I don’t know if I can trust you to be completely honest with me. You want to go back so badly… what if there’s nothing to go back to.”

“There’s still so much you all have to learn about yourselves. About each other. But you can only do that through time. You have to let yourselves develop and grow. Let your powers grow stronger. You can’t fight a battle without first preparing for war.” Serena stood up now, ready to fight the mental battle Nasedo was presenting.

“She’s right.” Isabel nodded in agreement and looked toward Max who nodded in response. They all stopped and looked at Nasedo. His eyes were averted and angry. A strange energy began to brew in the room.

“I promise you all that I haven’t lied about this. I am on your side. Have I given you any reason to doubt me?” Serena pleaded as she walked up to the Granolith and placed her hand on the cool glass. A swirl of light and color began to swirl from her touch and the four looked on amazed at the reaction of the machine. Nasedo stepped forward as he watched everyone’s reaction.

“Quiet!” He yelled, and reached his hand out as a force of energy knocked Serena off her feet and against the cold metal walls. “That is it. I will have no more talk of this. You will not waste the only provision we have been given. Especially not for this human.” He walked through the group and stood above Serena on the floor. “You are venomous to this plan. I will not have you ruining years of hard work and training.”

“Hey! What are you going to do?” Michael yelled out from behind as he tried to push himself up to Max. They stood, ready to make a defense for the body on the floor. The one that stood with bright blue eyes looking both terrified and full of tears up at them.

Nasedo turned his head to look at them, his face completely expressionless.

“I’m going to have to kill her. There’s no other way.”

***

The words made her blood run cold. Serena looked over as she saw Tess’s eyes shut tight and a wrinkle began to form within her brows. What was she doing?

“Oh Tess, don’t you know those little tricks require human minds? Weak minds?” Nasedo turned to look at her, his body never leaving before Serena.

Max stared at Serena’s face, willing her to look at him, and as their eyes met, she could tell he had a plan. He reached his hand toward the Granolith and they watched as the quartz crystal melted into the stone. The lights finally began to swirl brightly within. Nasedo turned to look at him in horror.

“What have you done?” He yelled. Serena jumped up and ran toward Tess.

“Let’s get you out of here.” She stated and grabbed her hand tightly. Everyone ran out of the room as Nasedo stood, his eyes looking upward in complete defeat.

“But the Granolith….”

“It’s not real.”

She looked at Tess again, and ran after her, as they all left Nasedo in the cave.

Maria and Alex jumped into the Jetta and Tess dragged Serena into the Jeep. Max started the engine and they sped off into the dark night.

“What just happened?” Isabel turned to look in confusion at Tess.

“He thinks we sent her off. I mindwarped him.”

“But he said that isn’t possible.”

“My powers are very strong, I made him think that it wasn’t possible.”

“So… all of that, part of what we saw… none of it was real?”

“No.” She smiled and looked over at Serena. “We have to hide her.”

They all looked at each other, wondering what they were going to do.

“It’s not going to work.” Serena looked at them sadly. She was beginning to feel the defeat. She was so sure she understood it all. That she’d found her way home.

“Yes, yes it is. We just have to get you back to the Granolith.” Max looked through the rearview mirror and met her eyes. “We’ll do it. We just have to hide you for one night.”

Isabel and Tess nodded in agreement but Michael continued to look at her face.

“How do you know it won’t work?” He asked, his eyes meeting hers strongly. She could tell by now, she’d completely gained his trust. She looked down, remembering the life that she so loved and thought of the irony of the whole situation.

“I have to die.” Everyone in the Jeep went silent. “Don’t you see? There’s no way I can return. Liz can’t be in existence while I am. It’s the paradox of time. So I have to die. It’s the only way to give myself another chance to live.”

They rode in silence, everyone taking in her words. They weren’t sure what to think. All of their careful planning and hope had suddenly crumbled.

Serena looked out into the dark night and let the tears fall. She’d have to offer herself as a sacrifice yet again. This time, she wasn’t sure what would happen once she did.

A/N: I know... I know I said that I would wait til Friday. BUT... I couldn't wait to post this chapter. It's the final chapter. And personally, my favorite one. Tomorrow, I'll be posting the epilogue.

Chapter 14:

She felt the sweat drip down her temples as she ran, fast and hard, with the cold night air stabbing her all over. She looked back and saw him behind her, his hand tightly in hers, the street becoming wide in front of them. The lights flashed on and blinded them. Then there were voices.

“Stop right there!”

The panic overtook her. She looked around, the fear evident in her eyes. She grabbed his hand tightly in hers. She felt like an animal trapped in a cave. She wanted to scream but nothing would come out. Her throat was thick and she struggled to swallow.

There was only one way out of this mess. They would have to jump.

She thought back to everything her life had become the past year. For a moment she felt a tinge of regret, a feeling that had seemed overwhelming just a few days before. How could she have been both the happiest and saddest in her whole life? Max had said it perfectly. That’s what being in love was. She looked down at the dark water beneath them.

Would she do it? Could she? She looked over at him, his face shaking, his eyes full of defeat. As long as they were together, they could overcome anything. She strongly believed that.

“We make our own destinies.” She whispered and reached over to kiss him. Then she simply closed her eyes and jumped.

As she fell, it was as if time slowed, as if nothing was real and she looked around, letting the breeze carry her down. She tightened her grip and realized there was no longer a hand attached to hers. She looked around the air frantically for the man she was trying to rescue.

His scream pierced the silent night.

“NOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!” She looked up and saw him, still standing on the edge of the bridge, his eyes full of tears and fear, for himself and for her.

“MAX!” She yelled up and tried to stop her fall. But it was too late. She was still flying, this time at a dangerous speed, spiraling downwards into the darkness.

“LIZ!” He reached out to touch her but she just got further and further away. “Liz, please don’t! I need you….” She heard his whisper as if it were right against her ear. “I need you.”

She looked down and closed her eyes. She wanted to go back. She needed to be with him, to help him, to nurse him back to health. She’d almost lost him in that white room. And all she wanted was to make it all right again. Instead, she was trapped, still falling.

“Be careful what you wish for.” She heard the faint whisper as she looked over and saw the familiar face. The bright red hair and blue eyes looking back at her.

“Serena?”

“I know that things are difficult Liz. I’m sorry that you’ve had to experience this. But it was your choice.”

“I don’t… I don’t understand.”

“Don’t you see? Despite your good intentions, the group needs Liz Parker. Think of all you’ve done for them. All the things that you and Max have discovered together. You’re a half of a whole Liz, you need him as much as he needs you, and only when you both are together can you make this happen. He needs you now more than ever.”

She looked around and simply found herself in darkness, no walls or floors or dimensions, simply space and the two bodies. Hers and the beautiful woman before her.

“I don’t know what else to do. I just wanted to save them. To save him.”

“Self sacrifice is not always the answer.”

“And what is.”

“You know already.”

“I don’t.”

“Love is one of the strongest forces in the universe. It can defy all odds. You still love him, don’t you?”

“So much that it hurts.”

“Then let that love lead you back to him.”

“But I’m stranded.” She pleaded with her and felt the warm hand as it was slowly placed upon hers.

“No. A situation is only hopeless if you let it be. Now listen to me. The fact that you came back as me is very important.” Serena smiled, letting her hair fall softly to one side of her face. “Although I will be someone you know and trust in the future, the time is not right. You have learned a very important thing about time. It is not a one dimensional thing as many people assume. Instead, every action is then faced by a counter action and any change, even the most minute, can throw everything off balance. Max Evans was there that day for a reason Liz Parker. Because you were not supposed to die. And I am not supposed to be in that time frame, just as Tess and Nasedo are not. There are many other events that are to take place, many other things you are all to experience. There will be difficult times but know that as long as you are all strong, you can overcome it… together.”

Liz nodded, held the hand in hers tightly and closed her eyes. She felt at peace, at ease. Love. She had plenty of that to go around. If it was all she needed, she’d be able to survive. She’d be able to go back home. She opened her eyes again and felt the peace suddenly leave her.

She was back in the dark night sky. She looked over and saw Max beside her and then she looked down and closed her eyes.

The cold overwhelmed her as the water surrounded her body. She let herself fall. She was falling deeper and deeper into the cold but she was not drowning. Instead, she pressed tightly on the hand beside her.

“Liz.”

She continued to glide within the water, allowing it to conform to her body. She was no longer afraid.

“Liz?”

She looked over and saw that Max was gone. She began to feel her head get heavy.

“Max?”

She tried to breath but couldn’t.

“Liz?”

“MAX!” She screamed as she violently jumped up in bed, her breath coming in pants, her eyes full of tears.

“Serena… it’s ok. You’re alright. You’re alright.” She met his eyes and threw her arms upon his neck, her grip strong and terrified, the need for safety evident in her grasp.

“I’m sorry. I’m so sorry.” She whispered, into his hair as he rubbed her back softly.

“For what?”

“For this whole mess. For not trusting in us.” There was a long silence and finally he pulled her softly away from him.

“What are you planning?” He explored her eyes, his own seeking answers and fearing drastic action.

“Come with me.” She took his hand and they quietly slipped out the door, leaving Michael, Isabel and Tess sleeping on the floor behind them.

***

They walked around the large cone, a long silence embracing them both.

“What are we doing here?” He glanced at her and then back at the cone, knowing very well the answer to his question.

“Do you trust me?” She asked, suddenly stopping, her eyes focused on his back. He froze in place and turned slowly to face her.

“You know I do.”

“Send me back.” She was looking into the cone, lost in her own thoughts. He watched her, the profile of her face looking upward, her red hair against her skin. She had managed to get him to become a person he didn’t think he’d ever be. A person who wasn’t afraid to live. To experience life.

“Is that even possible? I mean, don’t we need power?” He took a step toward her as her sad blue eyes looked over into his. There was so much about her that reminded him of Liz, but then again, she held a strength, a power he had never known in Liz. He had never gotten the chance to know.

“You can do it. Just you.”

“I don’t know if I can.” His voice was a frightened whisper, his eyes looking intensely into hers. She could see it in his face; disappointment terrified him.

“You once told me… Liz… that you loved her. If you really meant that, then you have to believe in your own power. If you ever want to see Liz again, you have to send me back.”

He stood above her, looking down into her eyes, his own searching her for answers.

“Serena… I’m not sure I can do this.”

“Did you love her?”

“I… I didn’t really know her all that well. I just… I guess I loved her from a distance.”

“How do you feel about me?” There was an awkward silence as he turned to face the cone before them. This time she watched his profile, his face and his expression.

“Honestly, you make me very uncomfortable.” Her eyes widened in surprise as she studied his face, the sharp tension in his jaw, and the far away look in his eyes. “I thank you so much for everything you’ve done for me, for us. I mean, you’ve really opened us up. Even Isabel and Michael, I never thought I’d see them smile and interact the way they have. But sometimes, sometimes you remind so much of her.” His voice went quiet and he turned to face her. They stood, her eyes looking into his sadly. He was her only hope. She needed him.

“And….”

“You’re not her.” She nodded in agreement, understanding what he was saying. After all, in this life, she only thought like Liz… she’d done all she could not to act like her.

“I can get you back with her but you have to help me. I only have two choices here Max. You either send me away… or you kill me.”

He stood in silence and sighed deeply. “I couldn’t do that.”

“And to be honest… Max… after watching Liz… I don’t want it to happen.”

“Sometimes at night I dream about what it would have been like… to save her.” She held out the quartz crystal and placed it softly in his hand.

“I can bring her back to you. All you need to do is believe.” He nodded and placed the quartz into the Granolith looking into her eyes.

“I believe.” He whispered with a shaky voice. She smiled and nodded, tears in her eyes. She was afraid. She was going to do something without being absolutely sure it would work. But she had to believe. For her own good, she had to trust their love.

He breathed in deeply and put his hand against the Granolith. The lights began to swirl again, circles of blue and purple filling the cone. He reached out with his spare hand and held hers.

“I need your energy. I can’t do this alone.” She nodded and placed her hand on the cone. She thought of the time they tried healing Michael with the healing stones. The way she had been too afraid. She hadn’t trusted him enough. She wouldn’t make that mistake again. The room buzzed with a quiet energy and she closed her eyes to allow herself to experience it. She felt light, as if her very atoms were swirling and flying in the air.

She breathed out deeply and began to feel his hand slip from hers. She began to panic, the scene in her dream suddenly becoming very vivid. She remembered looking up to watch him scream for her. The way the air practically left her body.

“Max…” She whispered.

“I’m here.” He whispered in return and she felt herself relax. Suddenly a bright light exploded onto the two of them as she felt herself being sucked into the space. She looked around, her eyes trying hard to focus on the blurry shapes. Everything was distorted through the thick glass.

She tried to calm her breathing, to focus on the task at hand. Max was still with his eyes closed, one hand against the cone, the other to his side. She watched he took a sharp breath and his eyes flew open.

He stared at her, awe struck by the power they had just exerted.

“Max.” She tried to contain the tears that were falling, tried to regain some sort of composure but found it impossible.

“It’s ok. It’s ok.” He whispered and placed his hand in front of hers against the glass.

That’s when she felt the first sting.

“AGHH!” The pain was unbearable. She closed her eyes tightly to keep the headache from exploding her temples. She placed both hands against the glass to steady herself.

“Serena!” She heard the faint sound over the sound of her own screaming head.

He watched her scream and felt his hands begin to shake. Something was happening inside of there. He stepped away from the cone and stopped dead in his tracks. Right before him, he saw her, only for a brief second, with the long brown hair and the big brown eyes.

“Liz?” He whispered, knowing for sure he’d gone mad.

“AGHH!” Her scream got louder and he watched, his heart aching, as her mouth opened widely in excruciating pain. His grew wide and his mouth dropped open.

Inside the cone was a flickering image, flashes of red and brown hair intertwined, and specks of blue and brown alternated in her eyes.

The room was silenced. He watched carefully as the lights began to swirl madly, hitting every angle possible in the room. Then there was one final flash.

He reached his arm over to cover his face and when he looked back over, she was gone.

EPILOGUE:

“Liz.” Her head throbbed as she heard the soft whisper in her ear.

“Liz?” She opened her eyes slowly, allowing the light to seep in.

“What… what’s going on?” She listened to her voice and felt an odd sense of discomfort. Something was different.

“We have to go, they’re gaining.” She focused her eyes on his, those beautiful hazel eyes, and saw something there she didn’t recognize. This wasn’t the same Max.

The same Max as what? She looked at him quizzically and stood up. He held out his hand and she placed hers in his, no questions asked.

“Liz, are you ok?” Then she stared at him, the sound of it making her eyes water.

“What did you just say?”

“Are you ok?”

“No… before that.”

“Liz?” She held out her hair in her free arm and looked down afraid of what she’d see. The long straight locks were still moist from the jump and she began to laugh, completely hysterical.

“I’m back.”

“What?”

“I’m back, I’m here with you!”

“Yea, listen we have to go.” He grabbed her hand and ran.

She allowed the excitement to consume her, enjoying every second of it all. Yes, she realized the fact that she could die any moment. For some reason, that no longer scared her. She was ready to face anything.

They ran across the desert, the sand flying around them. They reached a rock covered area and ran behind a large boulder.

They took a few moments to take a breath. Max looked over at Liz, his hands reaching up to cup her face.

“Are you feeling ok? You had a rough night, I kept hearing you whimper in your sleep.”

“I… yea. Max, I just want you to know that I love you.”

“I love you too.” He looked at her in confused amusement.

“No matter what happens… I want to be with you.”

“We make our own destinies, remember?” She nodded and smiled as he grabbed her hand and they ran again off into the distance. The sound of a siren was heard in the distance. The old Roswell PD truck was in the distance and she could hear a car driving quickly behind them. She simply ran, ran without a thought or a doubt.

She didn’t know what would become of them, but she knew one thing. She’d rather be there than anywhere else in the world.

Thanks to all of you who read this story. I thoroughly appreciate your time and attention. I hope that you have all enjoyed the journey. :)
