“So how was your date with Michael last night?” I ask as Maria and I walk towards my car.

“It wasn’t a date!” Maria says quickly

“Ah, I bet it was pure hell!” I snigger before adding with a shudder “I bet he pulled out the big guns and used all of his corny chat up lines”

“It wasn’t that bad,” Maria says “He isn’t that bad,”

I roll my eyes, “Well if you ask me the only think a guy like that is good for is carrying my bags but then again he didn’t really do that very well either.”

Maria shakes her head but doesn’t say anything else on the matter, instead she asks me about my date with Jake.

“It was…”

“Let me guess perfect?” she says and now its her turn to snigger.

“It was romantic, he filled the place with flowers and then we danced to Misty by Sarah Vaughan, it was my parents’ song” I sigh and smile softly at the memory “I felt like Vivien Leigh or Grace Kelly in one of those old black and white movies,”

“Who would have thought the Ice Princess would be such an romantic?” Maria asks with a grin,

“Ugh everything was perfect until I got in and had a run in with Whitless Whitman,” I wrinkle my nose in disgust as I think back to our conversation last night, “Can you believe that he had the nerve to man handle me last night?”

“Are we talking about Alex here?” Maria asks with a frown “He doesn’t sound like the sort of guy that would man handle a woman,” she coughs slightly and I send a glare her way, she better not be laughing at me!

“He did punch Max without a good reason,” I remind her

“I thought that was all sorted out now” Maria says, the frown back on her face

“You’re going to get wrinkles if you keep frowning!” I point out “Do you really want to age before your time?”

Alex says he wants to hang out with us after work, which is fine. Right now, I still seem to have a lot to talk to him about. And not just Liz's birthday party. "Sure, I'll help with the party planning and about tonight ..." I stop, looking over at Tess. We don't actually have plans yet, but I don't want her to think I'm not interested.

Alex immediately starts backtracking. "Hey, forget it! When you want to be alone, that's fine, I'll go out with the others. ... well, maybe not with Isabel but with the rest."

I laugh a little, hoping Alex doesn't feel too bad. "We don't really have plans yet, Alex. We should be able to come up with something to include you," I tell him. If I were still home, I'd be sure I could. There are lots of ways to go out with a third party and still be able to find private time. But I don't really know what Tess' thoughts on the subject would be.

"Alex, I wanted to talk to you about... well about what we were talking about this morning. Would you mind that Tess is here? She might even be able to help." It could be good to have a girl in on the plan, although there isn't any plan yet. She might be able to understand what Isabel is thinking, or at least let us know what she's saying.

"Uh... I guess so," Alex says, sounding very uncertain. I wonder if I was too vague about what the subject was. I hope he knows what I'm about to say.

I glance at Tess for a moment before turning my attention back to the road. "You see, Tess. Alex is interested in one of the girls here at the house, but she seems to really not like him so far."

Tess' eyes fly open and I hear a small gasp. "Isabel?"

Alex starts to turn red. "Is it that obvious?"

"That you like her, no," Tess says. "That she doesn't like you, definately."

I nod. Isabel had actually suggested that Alex might have escaped from a mental hospital yesterday morning. I think she's gonna be a tough one. Unless it's one of those occassion when hating is disquising that she really does like him.

"I want to try and help him get her to see him differently. Do you have any ideas?" I ask. Ready to hear suggestions from Alex or Tess.

ALEX

I wasn't really sure what Max was talking about when he mentioned that he wanted to continue the conversation we started this morning but I agreed, curious what he meant and it gave me a chance to finally talk to Tess for the first time.

After Tess says "Isabel?" I wished the floor what open so I could hide but Thank God! she only knew we meant her because Isabel made it rather obvious that she can't stand me.

"I want to try and help him get her to see him differently. Do you have any ideas?"

It's silent for a minute after that question, everyone in the car thinking about it. Letting out a sigh, I say, "You know what Max? It's nice of you to get me and Isabel together but ... lets face it: she can't stand me - told me so a few times, she already has a ... boyfriend, I guess whom she seems to like and so, it might be best if we just forget about it and I leave Isabel alone and find someone else."

"NO!" Tess cried out, surprising both Max and me.

"excuse me?" I ask, wondering what she had in mind.

"Do you really really like Isabel?" Tess asks.

"Yes, I do." I sigh, flopping back in my seat.

"Do you want to be closer to her?" she continues her Q&A.

"Of course." I answer, glancing at Max who looks at me through the review mirror shrugging.

"Well, then you can't give up! I mean, okay you might never get to be with her the way you want to but you should at least try to get friends with her." Tess explains, then looks to Max. "I mean, yesterday, you hit Max and now ... you two seem to get along quite fine, so you can't be a horrible person, Alex."

"Thanks Tess." I say with a smile. "And about me hitting Max ..."

Tess holds up her hand at that. "That's between you and Max, it's none of my business and you don't have to tell me unless you want to."

Wow, Tess is really cool. I am starting to understand why Max likes her and ... I still feel sad that he and Liz might not make it but Tess is at least a nice girl too and not some stupid bimbo.

She turns back to me then with an evil grin. "Besides, it's been ages since I played matchmaker."

Max laughs at that while I just groan. What did I get myself into here?

Loved your post, Sternbetrachter. Tess was great!

I’m surprised and pleased that Tess has taken to the challenge of getting Isabel and Alex together. I wanted to do it just to help Alex, but I’m beginning to think this just might be fun. And with Tess helping out, I think our odds of success have definitely increased.

“It’s not going to be easy,” I tell them. “Isabel's feelings are pretty strong. You should have heard the things she was saying about you yesterday morning."

Glancing in my rear-view mirror, I could see Alex wince. "I'd rather not know, thanks," he says, mournfully.

I nod. I can certainly understand that. I turn to Tess for a moment. "But he really is a good guy, Tess. There has to be some way to get her to see that."

Tess puts her chin in her hand, pondering. “Let’s see. What makes Alex special,” she says. “Well, he is kinda cute.” I raise my eyebrows at that and she hastens to add. “So are you, of course.”

I grin. “But I think we need more than looks, Tess. Something to get her attention.”

“Right,” Tess agrees. “And it should probably be something that’s not for her.”

“What do you mean?” I ask.

“Well, we want her to see the real Alex. Something positive that has nothing to do with making a good impression on her.” Says Tess.

“But I thought we did want to make a good impression on her?” Alex says, sounding confused.

“Of course!” Tess laughs. “But we don’t want her to know that it’s for her. If you do something nice for someone-else and she sees it, then she’ll know you’re not all bad. Something helpful or sweet.” She tilts her head thoughtfully. "Although we'd have to follow up by an act of kindness towards her, too. Something simple and not too pushy. Like that rose for Liz, yesterday."

She knows about that? Gee. I hope she doesn't mis-understand and think I have designs on Liz while I'm dating her. I know Liz isn't interested and I am trying my best to be just friends. And that's all it was. A gesture of friendship.

"What rose?" Alex asks innocently.

"Liz got a rose from one of the guys yesterday. Nobody knows who it was," Tess explains.

"They don't?" I ask, shocked. "Wasn't there a note?"

how about talking to Maria about the shopping on your way to work and then we jump to after work?

ALEX

Max seems ... caught off guard by Tess' statement. Does he know who gave it to Liz, I mean, obviously no one knows and ... oh my, could Max be the secret rose donor? That would explain his surprise but why would he give Liz a rose? Maybe he likes her? NO Whitman, don't go there - he and Tess seem happy, there is surely nothing like Max liking Liz going on. Sadly.

"No there wasn't a note. At least none that gave us a clue as to who left the rose." Tess said while I ws thinking about Max and Liz and roses.

"Oh." Max says in a strange voice. Maybe, just maybe he's the one who gave it to her and

"You think there was a note?" Tess asks him then.

Seeing Max look uncomfortable I decide to change the topic quickly, after all, we have more important things to talk about than roses.

"So, Tess," I quickly say, "you mean like me holding open a door for you and also for Isabel? Or buying you chocolate and offering her some too?"

Tess laughs at that, "First of all, Isabel doesn't seem to be the type who likes getting chocolate ... she might think you want her to get fat!"

OUCH! "I'd never want that. Her body's perfect." I babble.

"Good that you think that way, Romeo." Tess teases back, obviously not thinking about Max and roses anymore. I give Max a small wink and he smiles back at me.

"But yeah, stuff like holding the door open for her, paying for something when you are with her when she buys something - not too expensive of course. A coffee or such stuff but no Versaci dress." Tess goes on.

"As if I#d be able to afford such a dress." I groan. Man, Isabel's used to having people with lots of money around her and me? I'm a poor loser compared to her.

"Whatever you do, don't treat her as if she's special or a princess ... treat her like us other girls." Tess says after a moment.

"But don't treat her like a buddy either," Max quips, "or you'll be forever labelled as 'best friend' and those kind of friends never get any romance with the girls."

"Yeah." I reply thoughtfully. "I'm a very good best friend, or so I've been told so ...

God, this will never work!"

I'm stunned as Tess talks about the rose for Liz. No note? No wait. She didn't say no note. She said nothing that said who it was from. But if the note was there, then it did say who it was from. I know I signed it. I really don't understand the confusion.

Alex brings the topic back to Isabel before I can decide how to respond. If I try to explain that I gave the rose, after all this 'mystery' that'll just make it seem like more than it really is. Of course if I don't say anything won't that make it an even bigger mystery and then an even bigger deal when it does come out?

I try to keep my mind on the Isabel discussion. It seems to be heading in a good direction. Make Alex seem like a nice guy in general, first, then direct the attention to Isabel. But it shouldn't be too long, or he'll get trapped in the "good friend" mode. I'm not sure I really understand the 'don't treat her like a princess' advice. I thought all girls liked that. Isabel probably more than most.

"But don't treat her like a buddy either," I tell him. "Or you'll be forever labelled as 'best friend' and those kind of friends never get any romance with the girls."

"Yeah." he says, slowly. "I'm a very good best friend, or so I've been told so ... God, this will never work!"

"How about your band?" I ask.

"What band?" Alex says.

"The one you were talking about starting with Maria and Liz. Could we use something like that to make you seem more normal to Isabel? Maybe Tess and I could even get you on the radio."

Tess, Alex, and Max left soon after Max arrived in the kitchen. That only reminded me that I had to get Kyle and Michael together so we could hurry and leave too. Being late was not something that I wanted to happen today, especially if the three of us are ready to go.

“Ready to go?” I ask Kyle.

He shrugs lightly. “Ready if you are. Michael’s catching up on some sports. We can see if he’s good to go.” He extends his arm gallantly and I laugh lightly as I take it.

I don’t want to seem nosy, but the way Alex and Kyle abruptly ended their conversation was still on my mind. Instead of letting it bother me, I decided to try and ask Kyle once more. “What were you and Alex talking about before I came in?”

“Nothing important,” he says naturally, as though he was just discussing the weather. “Mostly that he and Max have cleared the air.”

We continue to walk over to where Michael was, and he explained what happened between him and Michael a little further. Neither of them was completely to blame for it. And Kyle knows that it really was just a small prank.

“Michael?” Kyle says.

“Are you ready to go?” I ask him from the doorway, beside Kyle.

*MICHAEL*

I've cooled off a little after catching up with my teams. I'm still annoyed at Kyle and Alex, but I don't need them. I can handle this on my own.

Then I hear Kyle's voice. "Michael, are you ready to go?"

"Sure, I'm ready," I say. What does he think? I click the TV off, get up and stretch. I walk out to the hallway where he's standing with Liz.

Kyle has the keys for the van. "We're outta here, then," he grins.

I look around as he walks towards the door. "Where is everyone else?" I ask.

"They got other rides. Max is taking his jeep and Maria's riding in with Isabel," Liz explains.

I guess that means we're the ones left behind. I remember that I was thinking about talking to Liz, but I'm not gonna do this in front of Kyle. I give Liz a smile and ask her, "Any chance we can get rid of Kyle?"

"Don't think so. He's driving," Liz laughs.

I shrug. I'm sure I'll get another chance. "All right then," I relent. A few minutes later, we're on the road and on our way. I hope the boss and I get along a little better today than we did yesterday.

ALEX

Make me look more normal? Is Max thinking of me as a freak? or worse, does Isabel think that? I'm pretty sure she does, after all, her behavior towards me leads to that conclusion.

"I don't know ... I think the girls and I don't have the same taste in music - I like alternative while Liz and Maria seem to be into popular music. I doubt that we'll get to a compromiss." I say to answer Max's question. "Besides, you really think the radio would let you just play the music of a band that only met two days ago?" I ask doubtfully.

"Sure." Tess says confidently, "after all, that would be good for the tv production and they might ... pester the radio to play cause it would most likely bring even more notice to the show if some of us are in the same band."

"Yeah, and we'll call us "The Reality" since we play in a reality soap." I laugh at that.

"See, you already have a name, now you just need to find the perfect music and you can start rocking." Max says with a wink in Tess' direction.

"And as soon as you are a rockstar, Isabel will be all over you!" Tess grins.

Trying not to get lost in thoughts of Isabel all over me, I say, "Yeah, but what else aside from the band? I mean, I had a band in high school too and my nick names where "computer geek" and "band nerd" so ... come on Tess, spill the secret wishes of women to Max and me!"

"No way buddy! There are rules against that!" Tess quips back. "Rules made on an oath of blood."

"Blood?" Max asks doubtfully.

Looking over at him, Tess grins mischievously, "Monthly blood if you have to know."

Both max and me groan at that. "Please," I beg her, "don't start talking about cramps now."

Tess is in a fit of giggles now.

"Hey Alex," Max says, "did you notice her calling you 'buddy'? You already are labelled as 'friend and nothing else' here!"

"HaHa! Very funny." I shot back. But damn, he's right! "Maybe I can get some brownie points with isabel after she and Maria are back from shopping when I compliment her on her 'excellent taste' with clothes." I say, thinking back to last night where she mentioned that she isn't impressed with my clothes.

should we get to work and let the group inform each other that they'd meet up later this evening (like Max - Liz, Michae - Maria, Alex - Isabel) so that Ruby has soemthing to post again?

Any idea what's happened to Bre? We haven't had a Maria post since May. :(
I don't really know what the plan is for after work. If Maria and Isabel are shopping, then I don't know how we can get them to run into Alex and Michael. I'm a bit confused about that. :? Hope this post is okay.

*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

*MAX*

"That sounds good," I say in response to Alex's comment about complimenting Isabel. "Everyone likes a compliment. And you don't have to reserve it to her new clothes. Try anything. Her smile, her laugh, her hair. Just don't go overboard. One at a time, okay?"

Alex nods. "I just hope it's not too late."

"It's not too late until she's married," Tess laughs as we finally arrive at the station.

"So we'll get together with Alex after work then?" I ask and Tess agrees enthusiastically. "Maybe we can give you a lift to pick up your car," I suggest.

I see that we actually have almost ten minutes before we have to be in. After wishing Alex good luck with the day's work and with any chance encounter he might have with Isabel, Tess and I head up to our ready room. Since our show runs through the lunch hour, we won't be seeing him again until after work. Maria arrives and we are soon being briefed for the day's show.

I'm nervous as anything as we finally go live, but somehow manage to survive the first hour. Tess takes to it like a duck to water. She seems to be in her element. Maria also seems to have forgotten that we're on the radio as she banters with us. She occassionaly makes a pointed comment to me or Tess and I wonder if she's jealous about our date last night. I had come very close to asking her out instead, but there was the Alex factor I didn't understand at the time.

In our second hour, Tess tries to deviate from the script. Inviting callers to talk about what attracts them to a guy, or girl. I can see she's really taking this Alex project to heart. Off the air, she's even asked me to help the guy out with some fashion tips, although I hardly consider myself an expert. "But you look great," she says. "You can help spiff up his image a little, I'm sure." I'm not at all sure I'm qualified to give advice on the subject, but I agree to try. It's not easy to say no to her when she's so perky and cute.
