Author's Note: This is based on Challenge #9 if I remember correctly by Anais Nin (I need that link girl...)
Either way, the story takes place season 1, after the balance where Max tells Liz they should seperate for a while. Liz is frustrated and confused and Max is longing for her. Meanwhile, a stranger comes into town and isn't quite who he seems.

Someone told me that a person on this board already had that title, and to avoid any confusion or problems I changed the title! THANKS FOR GREAT FEEDBACK

Rating: TEEN

Disclaimer: Of course, I don't own anything or I wouldn't be here talking to you right now. I'd be on a yacht with Jason Behr and Shiri Appleby drinking margaritas. :-)

PROLOGUE:

“I cannot believe this! How could you?!” He paced back and forth furiously; each step taking him deeper into his own thoughts. He stopped abruptly; looking at the quiet woman with her head cast low. In a fury, he grabbed her wrists tightly and demanded her attention.

“I loved you Ayleyna! I LOVED you!”

“Mekhi, you’re hurting me.” The soft voice sounded pained and afraid. He let out a frighteningly unnatural laugh.

“Really? Well, this is not half of what you have done to my heart.” His words were venomous, seeped with poison to tear down her guard. With that, he pushed her away from him in disgust as her petite body went tumbling upon the bed.

“Please… I never meant to hurt you.”

“You will NEVER see him again. Do you understand me?”

“Mekhi, I care for you….”

“NO! You LOVE me! You are my wife! We share a bed, hopes, dreams… we share a soul.” The eyes that were looking so intently at him a moment ago looked quickly away. He would break her. There was no doubt about that. He reached for her face and she winced in fear. Slowly, the large almond colored eyes met his wet with tears.

“Say it.”

“Mekhi….”

“I said SAY IT! Tell me that you love me.” He reached for her face in a panic squeezing tightly on her chin. He needed to hear those words. His world was falling apart so quickly and the people he once thought he could trust were now his main enemies.

“Ayleyna!” She struggled from his grasp and finally let out a large cry.

“I NEVER LOVED YOU!”

He shot up from his bed in a cold sweat. His breathing was sharp. He could feel his heart beating as if it were out of his chest. He reached his right hand up and placed it on his heart. It felt like it just broke each and every time. There was so much sadness in her eyes.

“What reason could you possibly have to be sad? You broke my heart, remember?”

He could feel the anger growing in him again. The resentment he had been learning to control and to channel. He had loved her and she wronged him. He understood that. She was a slut. Now all he needed to do was find his traitor. No trouble. He was getting a second chance, and this time, he would not fail.

Chapter 1:

“Did you know that when it snows, my eyes become large and the light that you shine can’t be seen? Baby, I compare you to a kiss from the rose on the grave. Oohhh, the more I get of you the stranger it feels, yeah. Now that your rose is in bloom, a light hits the groove on the grave.”

“I don’t like it.” Maria Deluca looked over at the frustrated bassist.

“What’s not to like Alex? It sounds awesome!”

“It sounds pop. I hate pop!”

“Seal is NOT pop! He is deepness. He is whispering words about roses and snow….”

“What the heck does that have to do with each other? Roses don’t even grow in the snow!”

“It’s symbolic! Hello??? I thought you wrote music….”

“I hate it.”

“Well, just deal until the competition and when we win the money you’ll be more convinced it was the right thing to do. Besides, I heard that the judges will be a mixture of students and radio personalities. I can totally win them over with my beguiling ways and some talent.” She smiled as he simply rolled his blue eyes.

“This is a mistake.”

“Ok, well it’s about time for me to go. Gotta head to the Crashdown, Liz is expecting me. Keep practicing Alex, we sound great!” She reached for her platforms and jacket. “I’ll call tonight and we can talk about our next rehearsal!”

“Whatever.” Alex began to pack his guitar. He looked up suddenly and grabbed Maria’s arm.

“Hey, speaking of Liz. Is she alright? She’s been kind of… well out of it lately.”

“She’ll be ok. Just some Max related stuff.”

“I thought things were going ok.”

“Yea, so did I. Then poof! Like the stupid powers they possess her bliss becomes misery. I don’t like it. I don’t like it at all. Those stupid Czechoslovakians are messing with our emotions and it’s driving us all insane.” She looked down into her lap sadly and then quickly regained composure. “Well, they don’t know us humans. We are fighters. We won’t let them win.” She felt Alex’s arm come around her.

“Don’t worry Maria. He’ll come around.”

“What? What are you talking about…I never…whatever. Just practice the song ok? I want to win this.”

“It’s just a talent show.”

“And we have talent. Look I really have to go, I’m running really late. See you later Alex.” With that she was gone and he could hear the screeching of the little red Jetta’s tires as she rushed to make it to work. He just laughed as he continued to put away his music equipment and dropped the music stand at the sound of the phone ringing.

“Ah!” He reached for the phone and tried to recapture his breath. “Hello?”

“Alex? Have you seen Maria? She isn’t picking up her cell phone. This place is packed and I can’t do it by myself.” He stopped for a second and looked back out the window. The woman on the other line sounded more like Maria than Liz.

“Ok, first of all breathe. You’re doing the Maria thing when you start talking really fast. Secondly, she’s on her way right now. As we speak. She should be there in no time ok?”

“Ok. Sorry… how was school today?” Her voice sounded strained and occupied.

“It was ok, and how about for you?”

“Well… it was ok.”

“Except for the whole having to sit next to Max Evans in Biology thing right.”

“Why would that be a problem?”

“Liz, I’ve seen how you’ve been these past few days. Don’t tell me you’ve been ok.”

“Look Alex, I have tables to attend to. But we’ll talk ok?”

“Take it easy. And if you need anything, please call me.”

“Ok, bye.”

She walked through the restaurant and sighed loudly. The hours just didn’t come fast enough. She looked at her clock and shook her head in disappointment. The place was crawling with people and Maria was conveniently 20 minutes late. She grabbed the order of salad and ginger ale and sped to table 6. Her feet were killing her… but not more than her heavy heart. She couldn’t even get the orders right today, too busy thinking about Max.

MEMORY

“I don't blame you. You had every right to feel that way, because what you felt is true. We don't belong together.” She could feel her heart breaking. He couldn’t mean that. Not after the kiss, not after the date, not after everything.

“Don't say that.”

“The other night, you know, when we went out...and the whole day before...ever since we kissed...I've been off balance. You made me forget that anything else existed, but that's not real.” IT IS REAL! She wanted to yell at him. His being an alien, THAT should not have been real. But she knew how she felt.

“It is the only real thing that I've ever felt.”

“Sometimes you have to take a step back to see what's really going on. Maybe that's what we both really need to do right now...find our balance again.” No, that’s what you need. I need to be with you. So she did all she could… kissed him one last time.
REALITY

“Miss… excuse me miss?” She looked down, her deep brown eyes watering.

“Are you ok?”

“Yes. Yes I’m ok. I’m sorry.” She half heartedly smiled and looked up at the chime of the door.

“I know, I know I’m late! I have a reason I swear!” Maria came running through the tables and stopped short at seeing Liz’s face.

“Back room, now.” Maria led and Liz sadly followed.

“What’s going on girl?” Maria opened her locker and reached for her alien uniform. The thing was ridiculously ugly.

“I can’t do this. I can’t have classes with him and dream of him and miss him. It’s driving me crazy Maria.” Liz plumped herself on the couch and took off her antennas.

“Oh babe, I know it’s hard. But you know what? You have to be strong! Distract yourself. He isn’t the whole world, you know?” Maria took off her shirt and flung it at Liz. “Don’t look; I know you want to see my sexy body.”

Liz couldn’t help but laugh. “Maybe he’s right. Maybe it is impossible. I should just move on. But it’s so hard when I feel like I’ve left my heart in his hands.”

Maria finished buttoning her uniform and motioned to Liz to throw back her shirt so she could put it in her locker. “Look, if you let him take control of you that way, you’re never going to be able to break free. Take back what’s yours and move on. Maybe it just wasn’t meant to be. And I know that’s hard to hear now, but you’re young, you’ll have many other men who will love you and look at you just as passionately as Max Evans.” Maria winked and sat next to Liz. “I promise.” She smiled, the sadness evident in her own voice. She hated seeing Liz this way. Her big brown eyes sad and watery. Her heart was broken and it was all over her face. Maria wouldn’t have it. Girls like that get taken advantage of.

“You know what? How about you spend the night? We’ll have ice cream and watch movies. I’ll call Alex. Ok?”

“That sounds great.” Finally, a smile. Maria felt a beam of pride. Wasn’t anybody better than Maria.

“I’ve been thinking Lizzie… would it just be easier for us to become lesbian lovers? I mean, heck, you know me better than any guy could.” Liz rolled her eyes and they headed back out into the main dining area.

“Take table 12 and booth 2. I’ll get the next few. Ok?”

“Gotcha covered.” Maria got straight to work and Liz tried to compose herself. A night out with Maria would do her good… as long as she could stop thinking about Max Evans.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
He sat in the booth all alone. Watching her from afar he could see her pain. All he wanted was to stop that pain. But why? He shouldn’t be feeling that way. He reminded himself of the pain it would bring. No… he must concentrate on what was truly important. He lowered his golden eyes and looked at his empty table. A sandwich was sounding pretty good at this point. He looked up, and to his amazement, her beautiful face stood right in front of him. She had a smile, though sadly not at all genuine, and she seemed to radiate a magic. She was absolutely ravishing.
“Hi, my name is Liz. I’ll be your waitress for today. Our desert for today is Men in Blackberry Pie and we have a great new shake, Blood of Alien milkshake, in chocolate, strawberry, or green vanilla. The green is just food coloring, no need for alarm.” She looked up from her pad and they met eyes. He could see her expression completely change.
“Well, that pie sounds pretty good. Which shake do you suggest?” He smiled and tugged the stray piece of dirty blonde hair back out of his
eyes.
“Umm… well, I like Vanilla. The shake is good, if you don’t mind drinking something green.”
“I’m willing to try it.” She jotted some things down quickly and looked up at him again quizzically. Did she feel it too? The odd connection he felt to her?
“I’m sorry… you seem incredibly familiar. Do I know you?”
“I’m afraid not. My name is Joshua. I just moved here from California. I’m going to the University in Santa Fe.”
“Oh. Well, I’m Liz Parker. I go to the local high school. It’s great meeting you Joshua. I hope you enjoy your time here.”
“Oh, I will. Thanks Liz.” The bell at the door suddenly rang. He looked over for a moment and saw them. They were the people he wanted to see. He looked back up at Liz and she smiled, finally a genuine smile, just for him.
“No problem. I’ll be back with that pie.” She turned on her heels and stopped at seeing the faces at the door. She knew them. And from what it seemed… one of them was causing her some pain. He had watched her pace back and forth throughout the restaurant aimlessly. She was distressed and on the verge of tears all afternoon. He looked back at the three teens standing at the door. But only one of them was staring back at her. He was the one.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
There was a pain in Liz’s eyes that hurt his soul. It was deeper than a pain in the heart. It was an unexplainable assault on his whole being. He needed her like he needed air and yet, something seemed awfully wrong. He felt the two bodies next to him tense. He looked over at his sister. Her eyes were fixed on a face at their booth. The face was staring right back at them. Golden brown hair and familiar golden eyes. Too familiar.

“He’s at our booth.”

“Michael! No… the last thing we need is a fight breaking out over a booth. We’re in enough hot water as it is. Let things die down first. We’ll sit somewhere else today.”

“He’s the one Max.” Isabel squeezed her hands nervously. “I’ve seen him all week. Lingering around school. Following us. Following me. I feel like I know him.”

“I know, I can’t explain it, but I feel the same way. It’s a disturbing feeling in the pit of my stomach, like I’m remembering something so long ago that it seems to be a dream. Not even real.”

“We have to talk to him. Find out where he’s from and all that.” Michael tapped his foot impatiently as he looked angrily at the floor. Then his eyes hit a pair of sneakers standing in front of him as he followed them up the legs and onto the face of their waitress.

“Do you guys know what you want or do you need more time?” He met her blue eyes and saw her avoid his glare.

“Umm… I’ll have a turkey club.” Isabel stated distracted. Maria followed her gaze over to the blonde at the booth.

“Uh, uh girlfriend. I saw him first. He’s so hot isn’t he?” Isabel looked up and suddenly smiled. Max looked at her suspiciously. He didn’t like that smile.

“Alls fair Maria.” She smiled and stood up, headed towards the booth.

“What the hell is she doing?” Michael looked at Maria then back at Isabel. “Great job Maria.”

“Don’t blame me because she’s tired of hanging on you. I don’t blame her.” Maria turned and walked away indignantly. Great… things were just getting worse. And Liz was completely ignoring them. He turned to watch carefully what his psychotic sister was doing.

“Hi.” He looked up, distracted from his thoughts. He smiled seeing her face, a face that was different and yet so familiar. She still held power, beauty, and a sexuality that was undeniable. She also still held a real sense of being lost.

“Hi.”

“I saw you sitting here alone and felt that I should come and say hello. I’ve, uh, seen you in the neighborhood.”

“Yea, I just moved here.”

“What do you do?” He could see the determination in her eyes. She had
seen him around school. He would not tell her just yet. It was too early.

“I am an intern at West Roswell High. I go to the University of Las Cruces and I’m hoping to major in education.”

“Really?” She sighed, finally an explanation for his odd whereabouts. Still, there was something in his stare that struck her.

“Really.”

“Well maybe one day we could go out. I can show you around town.”

“Maybe.” He laughed, knowing all too well he would not take her up on that offer.

“Ok well then…”

“Joshua.”

“Right, Joshua. I’m Isabel. Do you want me to just give me your phone number, in case I need to get a hold of you?”

“No.” His blunt response made her smile fade a bit. There was something she recognized about this man. She looked into his eyes and felt her stomach flip. His eyes reminded her so much of Max.

“No?”

“I’ll find you.” She looked around confused.

“Ok. Nice meeting you Joshua.”

“And you…” She walked away and took her seat with Max and
Michael. “Vilandra.”

“Here’s your shake.” He turned to see the beautiful brown eyes again. The ones he couldn’t get enough of.

“Liz, right?”

“Right.”

“How’s about you take a break. Enjoy a meal with me. My treat.”

“I really shouldn’t.”

“You sure?” He looked at her. It was astonishing how familiar she was. It seemed she sensed his staring, because she put her head down, strands of hair from her ponytail falling in her face.

“Well, I guess a few minutes would be alright.” She sat across from him in the booth and smiled. “So tell me Joshua, what are you hoping to major in?” He thought for a moment as he took a sip of his milkshake. There was a right answer to this.

“I’ve been considering taking Biology. Maybe becoming a doctor or something.”

“Really? I love Biology.”

“Yea? Maybe you can help me out someday.”

“Oh no… I’m sure I can’t do college bio just yet.” She laughed and it was sweet like honey to his ears. It was her glow, her very aura that he recognized. The feeling of familiarity was due to her eyes, her smile, and her persona. It was driving him mad.

“I’m sure you’d be great. So tell me Liz, what is there to do in this sleepy town?” He watched her face and then she looked up with a mischievous glint in her eyes.

“Scope out the aliens I guess.” She smiled and stood up. “I think your pie is ready. I’ll be back.” He looked over at the table with the three. There was a pair of golden eyes right on him. Angry golden eyes.

Back with the new chapter!!!!!!!!!! We left off with a very jealous Max and a conniving Isabel. And of course, this new guy Joshua. Let's see what this guy is really all about.

Chapter 2:

She sat in the foyer of the school and looked around for her brother. He was already like twenty minutes late. Stalking Liz Parker, I’m sure.

“Penny for your thoughts.” She jumped in surprise and looked up to see the tall blonde.

“You scared me.”

“Not my intention, I assure you.”

“Where’d you come from?”

“Here and there. I thought I’d come by and say hello. You seemed so deep in thought. Lost in your subconscious. Be careful, it’s easy to get lost in there.”

“Oh? You must be some sort of psychology professor.”

“Ha… yea something like that.” She made room for him to sit next to her, and the minute he did she felt the comfortable warmth of family. Odd, she thought. Definitely not a normal feeling.

“So are you heading home now?”

“Yes.”

“You mind giving me a ride? My lousy little brother is missing.”

“Really?” He snickered and she noticed something odd. He was so familiar looking. His blonde hair, his brown eyes, his smile. She felt a dizzy feeling suddenly overtake her as she envisioned a man, tall in stature with powerful eyes and a kind smile. Then, a woman walking up to him, kissing his cheek, with a smile on her face. He winks. She smiles. He would make it brief so that she can go back out to the town. Although they both knew, she wasn’t supposed to. She shook her head and looked back at the man in front of her.

“What do you think he’s doing? Isabel… Isabel?”

“What? I’m sorry. A little deja-vu for a moment.”

“I said what do you think he’s doing?”

“Dreaming about Liz Parker, I’m sure.”

“You sound jealous.”

“No, more concerned. The boy spends so much time with his head in the clouds. And well… I just don’t trust her I guess.” She looked down, unsure why she felt so comfortable confiding in this stranger.

“Dreams are a funny thing aren’t they? The way they interpret your feelings and show you things that sometimes you couldn’t see yourself.”

“Yea… I guess they do.”

“Even day dreams.” She kept her eyes focused on his, as if understanding an underlying idea.

“Tell me Joshua, what do you know about dreams?” She felt time slow, as if she had asked him this question before. He just smiled, his golden eyes sparkling, knowing the answer.

“I know that they are the windows to our hearts. And that overall, the one holding the key to them is the princess…of dreams.” She felt her heart stop.

*FLASH*
“Goodnight Mekhi.”

“Goodnight Vilandra.”

“Mekhi?”

“Yes?”

“You won’t forget about me once you marry her will you?” He turned to face her and smiled.

“Never. You’ll always be my little princess. No matter how old you get. You’re my baby sister. Besides, you’ll still haunt my dreams.” She smiled and he kissed her forehead before stepping out and closing the large door behind him.

*REALITY*

“Isabel?” Suddenly, it was as if she snapped out of a dream herself, and she simply stared into the eyes of the man before her.

“Isabel?!” She heard the voice, distant at first, but then it was as if it slapped her in the face and she sharply looked over.

“Max!” She looked over at Joshua and sat up straight. She wasn’t sure what to make of what just happened and from the look on Max’s face, he wasn’t very happy about it.

“I don’t think we’ve met. Hi, my name is Joshua Jamison.”

“Max Evans.” They shook hands and Max stood, his feet firmly on the ground, his eyes in attack mode.

“Pleasure. I was just about to give Isabel a ride home. She wasn’t sure if you’d forgotten her.”

“I would never forget my sister. I was just running a little late. Things came up. Thanks for the concern, but I think the situation is pretty much under control. You ready Isabel?”

“Yea, yea I’m ready.” She picked up her backpack and stood up, Joshua stood right after.

“It was a pleasure talking with you Isabel. Hopefully we can do it again.” He smiled and nodded as he headed out the foyer doors and into the darkening afternoon.

“What was that about? I thought I told you to stay away from him? After that ordeal at the Crashdown, I was very clear!”

“Stop it! You don’t know what’s going on ok? I didn’t just go looking for him Max, he came to me. I… I think I’ve met him. I just can’t remember when. I wish I could remember… but it’s like somewhere in my head that I can’t reach. Close, but still too far for me to tap into it. Max… have you ever had a feeling like you slowed down time? Like suddenly you were in another dimension where something very real happened, but you know it didn’t?”

“What are you talking about? Isabel, what did he say to you?”

“Nothing. Nothing, I just mean… well it was just weird because I had this moment you know? Where it seemed like we had slowed things down….”

“Did he kiss you??!” Max was furious, his eyes wild with anger.

“No! Nothing like that!”

“So what are you talking about then? What’s going on Isabel, seriously?
What did he say to you?”

“Nothing! Geez, Max will you chill out? We were talking! BIG DEAL! At least I know not to say what I’m not supposed to.” She stomped away furiously, her heels making a loud echoing click against the floor.

“Isabel. Wait.” He ran after her, his mind racing. He couldn’t trust this new guy. The way he was always where Isabel was. How he smiled at her. How he looked at Liz….

“Isabel! Look, we can’t be too careful ok. We’re… exposed now.”

“Whose fault is that?”

“Fine. It’s mine. I know that. But I can’t take it back. I won’t.”

“Then don’t talk to me about being careful ok?”

“I don’t trust him!”

“Oh, really?” She stopped right in her tracks and turned to face him. Her eyes were furious.

“What about consulting me before exposing our secret at the Crashdown? What about listening to my feelings about getting that Maria girl involved? What about my thoughts and feelings? Did you ever care? NO! I’m done caring what you think Max.” She stepped into the Jeep and sat with her eyes fixed forward.

He watched them from his car window. He had found someone who would listen to him. Now he had a way in. He smiled as he watched them drive away in silence.

“Thank you Vilandra.”

Chapter 3:
“Are you enjoying the ceremony your Majesty?”

He looked behind him, his amber eyes sparkling in the moonlight.

“Yes, I am. Thank you Larek.” The man smiled, his eyes wrinkling at the corners. He walked over to stand next to his king.

“Of course. If I may ask, what are you looking at your Highness?”

“The beauty of our moons and the magic of the night. It has always been my favorite time of day.” He looked down and saw a woman sitting by the gardens. “Larek… do you see the woman by the garden? Do you know her?”

“Yes, her name is Ayleyna Bouragio, the daughter of Count Bouragio. He is a merchant and traveler.” The king looked at her beauty from afar. Even from a distance she was absolutely striking. She looked like a goddess bathed in the moonlight. Her dark hair was shimmering with the magic of the stars and her dark blue evening gown blended with the darkness.

“Fetch her. I’d like to meet her. And make a meeting with her father. I want to talk to him.”

“Yes your Majesty.” Larek nodded and walked away leaving him alone in the darkness.

“Mekhi, why are you out here in the dark?”

“Zan, my brother, join me. I think I have found the woman of my dreams.”

“There is still a party going, I must watch to make sure all is well. I expect you will tell me all about it once I return.” Zan smiled and excused himself from his brother. He walked out and passed Larek and a young woman, her head held low, dark brown strands falling over her face. He looked up for a moment, admired her beauty and looked back over at his brother on the balcony. No doubt this was the woman Mekhi spoke of.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“Countess Bouragio, right this way.” She walked behind the man into the beautiful castle. It seems she had been summoned. She fixed her hair suddenly feeling incredibly self-conscious. The man before her stopped, causing her to stop in her tracks, and pulling her out of her own thoughts. He moved over and she was looking at the back of a tall man, with a royal coat. He turned and when his eyes met hers she felt taken. Beautiful golden eyes stared at her, a small smile curving on his lips. He was very handsome, no doubt, and she smiled.
“Countess, this is his Highness, Mekhi, the King of Antar.” Her eyes widened, suddenly realizing that the man she was staring at was the King. She dropped to her knees and averted her eyes.
“Your Majesty.”
“Stand beautiful one. Your presence before me is like standing before the ancient goddesses. I need no formal introduction, but I need to know of you so that I may worship your beauty from this day forth.”
She smiled, his words were smooth and sweet like honey. She stood knowing that things would be very different from then on.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

“Ayleyna.” She looked behind her, the deep sound of his voice striking her as familiar.

“Your Highness.”

“Please, it is simply Mekhi.” She smiled and curtsied and then turned to continue loading the carriage. He leaned in and picked up some of the boxes to help her.

“Forgive me, but I have been unable to sleep since I saw you that night.” She stopped and looked at the man standing next to her. This was in fact the King of Antar. The man who held control of the entire planet, of her family, and essentially of her; and yet, he seemed soft and harmless, his eyes held a warmth that made her smile.

“Actually, if I may be perfectly honest, I myself am not quite sure what our encounter that evening was all about.”

“I saw you in the gardens, alone, and felt the need to meet you. Your beauty radiated from the darkness and you shined more beautiful than our moons.”

“You really must not say things like that.” She brushed the loose strands of hair behind her ear and looked away as she blushed. His words were full of passion and she was beginning to feel like a school aged girl flirting.

“I only speak the truth, milady. Would you bless me with your presence this evening? There will be dinner at the palace for two.”

“Well, I must first speak with my father. We travel together….”

“It is done. I shall speak to your father…”

“Oh no, no, no, that’s quite all right.”

“It is settled. I will see you this evening. My heart will not beat until then.” He kissed her hand and departed, an army of guards following close behind. She smiled and shook her head. She was not quite sure what to make of this infatuation he had with her, however, she knew she was most certainly flattered.

“Ayleyna!”

“Yes father?” The tall man with dark brown hair stood before her, a look of confusion in his eyes.

“Was that not the King?”

“Yes… it was.” She returned to loading the boxes and prayed her father would inquire no more.

“Were you going to tell me he came by?”

“Yes, of course father.” He stopped her loading and pulled her to face him.

“Do you realize the gravity of this situation Ayleyna?”

“Father… it is just dinner.”

“He is the king of Antar. He does two things with women. He beds them or he weds them. I will not allow for him to make a mockery of my family. If he tries anything…”

“I promise, you will be the first to know.” She smiled and kissed her father’s cheek lightly. “Now let us finish, you have a long journey ahead of you this evening. I will be all right.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“You made it.”
“It was as polite an invitation as any. I could not simply leave you here.” She smiled, her eyes wrinkling at the corners. He could not resist smiling back. She held a magic all her own and her very presence was intoxicating. He stood and motioned for her to take a seat at the end of the table. As she sat the scent of orange blossoms filled his nostrils and he closed his eyes to take her in. She looked up just as he opened her eyes… for a moment, it was as if time had slowed.
“Thank you.” He stared into her eyes, his own golden lights searching into her soul. He wanted some sign that she felt it as strongly as he did. He nodded and headed towards his seat.
“Now tell me, Miss Bouragio, did you enjoy yourself at the ball?” He smiled and looked at her pleased face when the food platter was placed in front of her. The contours of her face were exquisite, the work of adoring hands.
“I did, your Majesty…”
“Please….”
“I am sorry. I mean… Mekhi.” She looked down at her plate nervously. He was so intense, she could feel the heat of his stare as she placed the spoon into her mouth.
“Ayleyna, what would you say if I were to tell you that I am completely taken with you?”
She put down her spoon and cautiously looked up. The words of her father rung in her head. Careful… she needed to be very careful.
“I am most certainly flattered your greatness…”
“And you?” She could feel his glare. What was she to say? After all, they had only met several days ago. Granted, she loved his company, and there was something incredibly beautiful about the way he looked at her. But she did not feel a tingle in her stomach, or a longing for him throughout the day. She was beginning to care about the man, but she knew she was far from falling in love with him.
“Well, I see I have tread upon a delicate subject. Forgive me for my directness. I did not mean to make you uncomfortable. But you must know… my efforts are to win your heart.” He smiled and continued eating as if the conversation had never occurred. She looked down and caught herself wondering what life would be like as Queen of Antar.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

“WHAT!? Father, we have only had two dinners and been out walking once or twice. I barely know the man!”

“Ayleyna, try to understand. Think of the good it will do for the family. And he loves you.”

“How could he love me, he knows nothing about me!”

“Ayleyna, sometimes, in life, you must play the cards you are dealt. He respects you enough to marry you, he adores the ground you walk on.”

“Father… please try to understand. I… I enjoy his company. I do. But… I don’t feel strongly enough for this man to marry him! Do you understand the responsibilities that would ensue?”

“He will not take no for an answer. And frankly, I will not allow you to remain my helping hand forever. You are beautiful and intelligent. You deserve the best. This is the best I can do for you Ayleyna, please take it.” She sat down in frustration as her father kissed her forehead. She had known the Mekhi, the King of Antar since the last full moon, nearly a month. Since then, she had received gifts, long walks, and wonderful conversations. She cared for him greatly, but her heart knew well that marriage would be completely different. Perhaps, she could learn to love him.

A/N: Two updates back to back! :-) I was on a writing streak. I hope you all enjoy!

Chapter 4:

“I just don’t trust that guy.” Max slammed his locker shut and looked over at Michael.

“I don’t know Maxwell, I get these vibes from him.”

“Vibes?”

“Yea, like he’s familiar in some way. Like I know him.”

“But we don’t know him.”

“What if…? Forget it.”

“What if what?”

“Nothing, it’s stupid.”

“Just say it Michael.” Max stopped short of their classroom door. He turned to look at Michael with pleading eyes. He needed answers.

“Maybe he’s more than he appears to be….”

“What like Topolsky?”

“No… like an enemy? Or someone from our planet?” Max stared at Michael blankly. Was he serious?

“I don’t think so.”

“How do you know?”

“I don’t! Fine… you know what? We’ll keep an eye on him. AND Isabel. Keep an eye on Isabel.”

“Yup.” Michael walked behind him into the classroom. As they sat down Max looked over to her seat. It was the place his eyes naturally drifted too. Years of looking for her had done that to him. He spotted her sitting quietly, looking down into her book. He hadn’t even been near her for days. He thought back to that night and the fear in her eyes. He didn’t want to hurt her. But things were just so… complicated. He couldn’t risk it if something happened to her. He looked around and caught sight of Maria. She had been pretty aloof since her and Michael fought too. The more time passed, the more they all seemed to separate.

“Ok class…” He looked up at the teacher and looked over to his side. Isabel was not in class.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“Isabel.”
“Hi… fancy meeting you here.” Isabel smiled, her brown eyes glistening in the sunlight. She moved over and patted the bench. “Have a seat.”
“You look lost.”
“I am.” She looked over at his face sadly, his eyes providing a comfort she had only experienced with two other people in the world.
“Wanna talk?”
“I’m actually really late for class. I left school for a while, needed some air you know?” She looked up and felt an odd feeling come over her.
“Yea, I know.” He smiled and took a bite of his taco.
“Joshua… what are you really doing here?”
“Having a bite to eat.”
“I mean, really doing here?” He put the taco down and wiped his hands on a napkin. She looked at every move, anticipating his actions. She’d seen him do that thousands of times before, and yet, she had never eaten with this man.
“You feel it, don’t you?” She looked at him quizzically.
“Feel it?”
“The connection.” She looked down, unsure of what he was talking about. “Isabel…” He reached over and placed her hair behind her ear. Suddenly, she felt the rush of images attack her head.
*FLASH*
“And what now?”
“Patience dear sister, patience. It will all turn out beautifully.”
“Mekhi, it is my very first big event. Zan and Rath have both helped me decorate and the kitchen staff is working away. I have the guest list, the gift list, and the music sheet. Am I missing anything?”
“No… it seems you have thought of it all.”
“Are you frightened?”
“Should I be?”
“Well, you are getting married. The bonding ceremony is no light thing Mekhi.”
“I love her Vilandra.” She looked down sadly and smiled.
“I know that.”
“Go, get dressed. Be careful not to be the most beautiful one in the room… that is reserved for the bride.” He kissed her forehead and sent her upstairs as he took over the planning. She walked up the spiral staircase and looked down at her older brother. She hoped for his sake that this woman loved him as much as he did her.
*Reality*
“Mekhi?” Isabel froze, staring at him wide-eyed.
“There is a lot to explain. Meet me over by the highway tonight. I will tell you everything.” He stood and headed towards his car, as Isabel sat alone staring at her cold taco.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

She walked through the hallways staring blankly ahead. It was as if she were walking alone. She took no notice of the people and the sounds.

“Isabel?” She looked up and saw the familiar smiling face.

“Hi Alex.”

“Are you ok?” He walked next to her, his eyes never leaving her face. He was worried about them. All of them. It seemed that since that night at the reservation, the six of them were splitting ways. Liz seemed to be hit hardest of all.

“Umm.. yea, I’m ok. I just… I had a long day.” She continued walking and Alex stopped to watch her. Something weird was going on.

“Hey Alex, have you seen Isabel?” Max looked at him desperately, his eyes wild with worry.

“What’s going on guys?” He looked at Michael then back at Max and knew something was going on.

“We’re just looking for Isabel.” Alex looked at them suspiciously.

“Don’t you have class with her?”

“Look, are you gonna help us out or are you gonna ask questions?” Michael paced nervously.

“We haven’t seen her since before lunch and I was just getting a bit worried, that’s all.” Alex looked ahead and saw Liz’s sad eyes. She had been like a walking, bleeding heart for days.

“Nope, haven’t seen her. Sorry guys.” He excused himself from them and walked over to Liz. Max looked back and sighed at the sight of her.

“Let’s go Max.” He took one last look and followed Michael out.

“So, Liz, what’s up? Had fun last night?”

“Yea, I did. Thanks. Listen, Alex I just want to thank you, for everything. It really has meant a lot to me. I just… I don’t understand. I know that Max and I have something… special. But it’s like so impossible, you know? I just can’t seem to get over him.”

“Why don’t you take last period off? Go home, relax. It might make you feel better.”

“No, it’s just one more period to go. I’ll be all right. I’ll see you at the Crashdown, ok Alex?”

“Be careful Liz… there’s a lot of weird stuff going on today.”

“Thanks.” She smiled and walked away to her next class. She hadn’t seen Isabel all day. She knew something was up and she hated being left out of the loop.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“Isabel!” Max ran upstairs to his sister’s room. He’d have to have a serious conversation with her once he got there.
“Isabel!” He swung open the door and as he went to yell at her, stopped short. She sat on the floor against her bed in tears. In her hands was a notebook, full of writing and sketching. She looked up, her eyes red with tears and smiled.
“I remember Max.”
“Remember?”
“Our planet. I remember everything.”
A/N: It seems a lot of my original feedbackers and readers have disappeared. :-( How sad, since the story will not begin to take shape. This is where it starts getting good.
Chapter 5:
“You’re not going by yourself.”
“If he sees you he won’t tell me. This may be it… what you guys have been looking for, remember? Now just let me do this.” Max rubbed his forehead in distress.
“It’s not safe.”
“When have you ever cared if something was safe Michael?” Isabel rolled her eyes and finally sat from pacing.
“We should be with you Isabel. You don’t know this guy. He can be anyone. And I don’t trust the way he’s always just showing up places. It’s dangerous. I’m not letting you go alone.” Max stood and grabbed his jacket. He looked out the living room window and saw the sun making its way to the horizon. The dark orange and pinks were beginning to cover the sky. It would be dark soon and he was most definitely not letting her go alone in the dark.
“We’ll have dinner. After dinner we’ll head out to the old highway. I’m going out for a few minutes. I’ll be back.” Isabel stared at her brother and shook her head. This could be very dangerous. But there was a frightening excitement creeping through her veins. There was something about Joshua, something about his eyes and his demeanor, his stance and his smile. She felt oddly comfortable with him. Unafraid to expose herself or of his reaction to her, but she knew it wasn’t any kind of romantic interest. It was like nothing she’d felt before except with two people… Max and Michael.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

“Welcome to the Crashdown, is there anything I could get you today?” Max walked in through the double doors and took a deep breath. The place still had a way of making his stomach dance. Just the thought of being in the same room with Liz Parker was powerfully moving. But the sadness in his heart lay at one truth. He’d pushed her away. He had to. He kept telling himself that to keep the pain away, but the truth was, it didn’t help.

“You look like you could use a shot of my good friend Jose.” Max looked up, startled out of his thoughts. Maria stood with her order pad and a sympathetic smile.

“Jose?”

“Yea, Jose Cuervo. Him and Hagen Daaz are like my two favorite people in the world.” She sat across from him in the booth and sighed loudly. “So tell me Max, what’s with the long face?”

“Just got a lot on my mind.”

“Wanna dish?”

“Not really Maria, but thank you.”

“You miss her don’t you?”

“It’s better this way.” Maria rolled her eyes and stood up.

“You know something? I wish you Czechoslovakians would stop trying to tell us what’s good for us. I mean, you’re on our grounds after all. Czechoslovakia hasn’t even been a republic for years!” Max sat confused, his eyes looking at her quizzically.

“Maria… what are you talking about?”

“I’m saying… you’ll need the assistance of the natives of the land. Pushing us away is only going to make peace efforts impossible. Trust me, I don’t care how many voodoo tricks you guys know, no one knows Earth like a humanoid. Now drink the Cherry Coke.” Maria sat the glass down and got up to tend to the remaining tables. Max stared at the cup and then looked up, only to be struck by dark brown eyes staring from a distance. He stood, his mind racing. What if he didn’t make it back? Should he say goodbye? Would she ever know how he really felt about her? He heard the door chime and looked down at his watch. It was time. He left cash on the table and walked out into the night.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“Ready?”
“Ready.” They sat in the car, the desert sky glaring at them through the windshield.
“This is it Maxwell. The answer to all our questions.”
“Don’t get too excited Michael, we don’t even know if this guy is telling us the truth.”
“We have no reason not to trust him.” Isabel began opening the door and Max reached over to stop her.
“And even less reason to trust him. Isabel, you don’t know him the way you think you do. Don’t let your feelings cloud your vision.”
“Yea, we all know what happens when we do that.”
“Something about a dog with his tail between his legs.” Isabel looked back at Michael with a disgusted face. Max couldn’t help but smile. “That’s just… that’s what Maria said.” Isabel shook her head and left the car, taking in the cool brisk air. She looked up into the sky, the stars were shining brightly. Michael followed her gaze upwards and stood frozen.
“Holy crap.”
“What is it Michael?”
“The v-formation. That’s the star formation I saw when I was sick. It means something! It was in the map at the cave!” Michael looked around, taking in the area. Max looked at Isabel, a sudden look of shock on her face.
“What? What is it Isabel?” She pointed towards the rock formation a few yards away. She started walking, her eyes carefully inspecting the shape. She walked faster and faster until she finally broke into a run.
“Isabel! Wait!” Max and Michael ran after her, the sand swirling under their feet. “Wait!” They reached the bottom of the rock and watched her climb to the landing.
“There’s something here!” Michael jumped up first, Max followed. They stared at the blank rock wall. Max looked over at Isabel and back at the wall. As odd as it looked, he felt it too. There was something oddly familiar about the place. He started to feel around, any sign of an opening or loose rock. Finally he placed his hand flat against the wall and his imprint began to glow. A small rumble was followed by the sliding of the wall. They stood, Max, Michael and Isabel, side by side, staring at the room. Isabel placed her hand against her mouth in pure shock. Max walked in slowly, the memories flooding his mind. He looked at the pods, two on top, and two on the bottom. He looked back at Michael and Isabel, his eyes holding the same question as theirs. They had always been three, as long as he had remembered. Who was the fourth?
“It’s our pod chamber.”
“Yes, this is where we were all born.” They looked back, startled at the voice. There, in the door, stood Joshua, tall and handsome, a black pentagon tattooed on his left arm with his dark jeans and black t-shirt. His resemblance to Max was striking, the same eyes, the same jawline, the same physique. And yet, he stood on his own, his blonde hair like Isabel’s, his smile, all his own.
“We?”
“Yes, we. When we were sent from our planet, there were four of us and our protector. He was killed years ago. I have spent most of my life searching for you. You came out early and disappeared. We tried to find you… months later, we found out you’d all been adopted. Now it’s time to reunite. To reform the royal family.” Joshua took a step towards them and Max stared into his eyes, looking for any hint of betrayal or lies. He couldn’t see it.
“Royal family?” Michael took a step toward him without a hint of fear. He was interested in what he was hearing.
“Yes. We are the royal family of Antar. Max, Isabel, you are my brother and sister. Michael, you are our commander.”
“We’re related?” Isabel’s face softened, finally understanding her connection to this strange man.
“Your name was Vilandra. You were my younger sister.”
“Mekhi… your name was Mekhi.” Isabel walked up to Joshua until she was face to face with him. Their eyes gazed intently into each other’s, her heart expanding at her understanding. “And you were King!”
“You remember.”
“You really remember it all Isabel?” Michael stood next to her, examining her face.
“Not all of it, but I remember small things. Smells, sights, feelings. That’s how I knew there was something about you.” She turned to Joshua and smiled.
“And who am I?” Joshua watched Max’s careful eyes. Always being careful.
“Your name was Zan. You were my younger brother, best friend, and confidant. You were also next in line for the throne.” Max thought over his words and looked back at the pods behind them.
“So if we’re from the royal family of Antar, what are we doing here?” He could tell he had sparked his curiosity. He would need to gain their trust in order to go through with his command.
“We were sent here after the war. Our kingdom was taken over by a tyrant named Kivar. I am looking for the one woman who can reverse that.” Isabel looked at him curiously.
“A woman?”
“Yes… I am looking for my wife.”
A/N: This is where the real plot of the story comes out. Things get real crazy here! Read carefully.
Chapter 6:
Max walked around his room, his head full of Joshua’s words. He was looking for his wife. They had been sent down to Earth with the hope of returning home and freeing the people of Kivar’s tyranny. He was royalty. But his head continued to pound.
*MEMORY*
“How will you know you’ve found her?”
“My wife will hold a seal, much like the one I have tattooed on my arm.” They looked at the black pentagon on Joshua’s arm. Michael closed his eyes, the shape was vaguely familiar.
“I saw that in my vision! The dome! It was in the dome!” Max thought back and remembered the windows on the ceiling of the geo-dome in Marathon, Texas. They were in the shape of a pentagon with five uniting triangles.
“What does it mean?” Max awaited the answer, trying not to be overwhelmed by this man’s information.
“It is the sign of the royal household. Five is the royal number. You hold it and I hold it. I hold the pentagon, you hold the V-formation.”
“Like the one in the stars?”
“So you’ve seen it?”
“We’ve noticed it.” Michael looked at Max, as if searching for the seal.
“It’s embedded in his brain and can only be accessed through our powers. Mine is tattooed on my arm. Isabel, yours is the light birthmark on your shoulder, and Michael, you’ve got it in the shape of a scar.” They looked at each other; no one had ever noticed it before. Isabel rubbed her shoulders, suddenly aware of her symbol. Michael thought to his scar, and the odd way it formed a perfect “V” on his leg. He was right.
“Where will she hold the seal?”
“I am not sure. But I will know her when I see her.”
“Do you think she’s here in Roswell?” Isabel questioned, ready and willing to help search.
“Yes, there is no doubt in mind she is in Roswell. In fact, I think I’ve already found her.”
*REALITY*
Max sat on the bed and held his head in his hands. He had never felt more torn in his life. He had agreed to help find the woman, his brother’s wife, in order to get them back home. It was his duty after all. They had a family waiting back for them. But his heart strings had tugged at the Earth. This was his home. It always had been. He had fount himself thinking about Liz as they spoke of Antar. He took off his t-shirt and lay back on his bed. He needed to sleep, to try and regain some composure. He had never felt so torn. He had an obligation to fulfill. Yet, there was no doubt that his heart would fail him. He rubbed his red eyes and sighed loudly. This all had to be some sort of crazy dream. There was no way that he was looking for his alien brother’s wife. And even worse, there was no way that his wife was the one woman Max had loved his whole life. Liz Parker.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

“Zan, I am telling you, she’s the one!”

“Married? Mekhi, I don’t know what to say.”

“Be happy for me brother, this is an event of great joy!” He smiled and looked at his older brother beaming with happiness. Perhaps this newfound love was a good thing. Zan smiled and fixed his collar. They were awaiting her arrival at the palace.

“You will love her Zan. She’s wonderful.”

“No doubt, she must be, after all, you are the King of Antar. No ordinary woman could be your bride.” Mekhi laughed, his eyes sparkling as he put his arm around his brother.

“You are right little brother, as King, I deserve the very best.” The tall and heavy wooden doors creaked as the maidservants held them open. In the large doorway stood a small figure, a rich green dinner gown, her brown hair in curls. She looked up and her dark brown eyes were piercing. She was the most beautiful creature he’d ever seen.

She looked from one man to the next, her heart fluttering in nervousness. As she looked to her right she could see Mekhi’s smiling face. She smiled in return, concealing her concerns and fears. She would be bonded to him soon. She will take the position as Queen. It was absolutely nerve wrecking. Her eyes wandered to her left as she admired the man standing next to her future husband. He was tall, his skin was darker than Mekhi’s, sunkissed as if he had spent a lot of time out in the fields. His hair was dark and strands fell upon his face. He looked up and they met eyes. She felt her stomach flip. It was like nothing she’d ever experienced. His eyes were intense, they looked like the auburn sky during the setting sun. He stared at her as if searching her soul, looking for something. She tried to breathe deeply. But it was impossible. There was something about his stare. She lowered her head, feeling a blush rise to her cheeks. She walked ahead until she was finally face to face with the two men.

“Zan, meet my wife, Ayleyna.”

“It is truly an honor.” He reached for her hand and tenderly kissed it. She breathed in deeply to avoid dropping. This man had a hold on her that was unexplainable. She looked at Mekhi, the man who was to be her husband and back at Zan, his brother. This would be an incredibly odd experience.

“The honor is mine, your grace.”

“Zan, I have an important task to assign to you. You are to care for my wife. From this evening forth, you are her sole protector. Guard her with your life.”

“As you wish.” She looked up at him, wondering what kind of man hid inside his brown depths.

“Ayleyna, your room is prepared. Get in your gown my dear, tonight, we will be bonded.” Mekhi kissed her lips softly, she closed her eyes, praying she would feel something. When she reopened them all she saw was the face that made her smile. She would grow to love him. After all, he was a wonderful man. She watched him walk in the opposite direction, leaving her alone with Zan.

“Miss Bouragio, follow me.”

“Ayleyna, please.” She smiled and he stood still, taken by her beauty.

“Of course.” They stood there for a few moments, no words exchanged, just the look from one person to the other.

“Shall I take you up to your chambers now?”

“Please… Umm, of course. Thank you.” She blushed, and followed the man before her, an odd feeling that she would follow him anywhere if he simply asked her to.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“So we won the talent show! The way I said we would! I was like, yea, like of course! What do you expect? I’m the bomb… and Alex too.”
“Actually, she did do pretty good. I must say, even I was kinda feeling it, and I hate that song.”
“It was awesome! So here, 500 dollars divided by three… umm… well by two its 275, or wait is it 250… umm 25 times 2 is…”
“It’s about 167 dollars a person.”
“HOW DO YOU DO THAT MATH SO FAST!” Maria sat frustrated in the counter stool at the Crashdown. It was right before opening and she sat with Alex eating some breakfast.
“I didn’t do anything to deserve that cash.”
“Think of it as a gift Liz. Go out, have fun! Spend money!”
“Maybe it’ll take your mind off of OTHER stuff. You know?” Alex widened his eyes at the word “other” and Liz laughed. She knew exactly what he was talking about.
“You know, maybe a shopping spree would be nice. I have been looking to get a new pair of khakis.”
“Khakis? We give you 166 dollars and all you can think of are khakis? Liz, hun, you really need to get out more. I was thinking more, dance club, dinner, slinky outfits, maybe a stripper if the times get kinda tough. Or we could always just have Alex strip for us.”
“Please stop, the image of me in a thong is enough to send me into repressive therapy.”
They laughed, finally feeling a tad bit of normalcy. Maybe not being around all the alien business was good for them.
There was a slight knock at the door and Liz looked up to see the face through the glass. He smiled, his eyes sad and exhausted. She walked toward the door and unlocked it, letting him in.
“Hey.”
“Hi.”
“Hey Max.” Maria looked at him, wanting to know what he was doing there and Alex simply smiled sadly.
“Hi Maria, Hey Alex. Umm… Liz, can we talk for a minute?” They stood together, uncomfortable and shy. The force that brought them together still strong, but their denial of it making them both miserable.
“Sure.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Liz turned and closed the door behind them. Max walked over and sat down on her bed.

“Max, are you ok?” She leaned against her bedroom door, the look in his eyes worrying her.

“I just wanted to talk to you. Clear the air.”

“Is there something bothering you?” She looked at him and felt her heart drop. When his eyes met hers she felt his sadness overtake her.

“Max… just because we’re not together doesn’t mean you can’t talk to me. I’m still your friend. I care about you.” She walked over to him slowly, something unexplainable drawing her near. She stopped before him, searching for answers in his face.

“The day I saved you…” It came out almost like a whisper. “I knew things would never be the same. I never knew that I would feel… the way I feel about you.”

“What we share is special. It’s unexplainable.”

“That’s what I thought. But the more intense we got, the more lost I became. I’m… I’m not human Liz.”

“I know that.” She finally sat, not quite knowing what he was getting at.

“Then I realized, we were sent to Roswell for a reason. I was meant to save your life that day Liz. It was destiny.” She felt her heart flutter. Maybe he was saying what she hoped he was saying. Max looked up, his eyes wet with tears and her heart just broke into a million pieces.

“Max?” She stood still, feeling the world spin around her.

“We don’t belong together Liz.” She watched a tear fall down his cheek and questioned the realness of the conversation. This couldn’t be happening. Things just kept getting worse.

“So I came to say goodbye.” She felt the shock of his words and finally let out the breath she was holding accompanied by unwanted tears.

“Max, I… I don’t think I understand.”

“We found the first real link home.” Liz looked up. Would he be leaving her? Is that why he was saying goodbye?

“Where?”

“In you Liz. You are a part of my past.” Max finally stood, overwhelmed by his feelings.

“I’ll be around if you need me.” He walked towards the balcony and out the window. Liz took in his words. What was he talking about?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“Good night.” Liz locked the Crashdown doors and sighed with relief. Finally, they were all gone.
“So he said goodbye? Like for good?”
“I don’t know Maria. I mean, it was weird. He looked like he was going to cry. Like he had no choice.”
“That is so weird.”
“I don’t know what to think. I’m so confused.” Maria sat next to her friend on the stool and rubbed her back.
“Look, things have been real tough. Maybe you need a day to just clear your head. Go out for a walk or something. Then stay home tomorrow. Sleep in. Pig out while watching soaps and Rosie.”
“Yea. That sounds good.” Liz took off her antennas and headed towards the back room. “Good night Maria.”
“If you need me, call!” Maria yelled behind her as she wandered into the back and up to her room.
She changed out of her uniform and threw on some jeans and a sweater. The weather had dropped a bit. It was colder than usual out in Roswell. She grabbed her jean jacket and jumped down the balcony ladder. Her parents would be very upset if they knew she was out at this time. Alone and walking the streets.
She wandered through the streets nearby, watching the neighbors close up shop and catching a few glimpses of families settling in to watch television or go to bed. It was peaceful and relaxing. Her head continued to turn to Max. The look in his eyes was heartbreaking. Why? Why would he say goodbye? She knew he wanted to take a step back, but she thought he meant temporarily. She didn’t know he meant forever. And the talk of her being part of his past? Was he losing it? She treaded into the park and walked with her hands in her pockets and her head down. Her dark hair was over her face, swirling in the wind. She found herself sniffling, her eyes welling with tears. Why couldn’t things with them just be normal? She thought back to the day he healed her. The images that ran through her head at that moment. He gave her a life. Something to live for. She was starting to wish that things had gone differently. Maybe she should have not tried to pursue him. To keep her feelings to herself.
She started crying now, the cold air making her face sting. She leaned up against an old tree and sat down against it on the ground, pulling her knees tightly into her chest. She felt so alone and so heartbroken. There was nothing she wanted more than to tell Max how she felt.
“Liz?” She looked up, startled at the sound of her name and saw the dark shadow of a man.
“Joshua?”
“What are you doing out here?” He scrunched down on his knees to be at eye level with her, as she looked up at him, wiping away her tears. Her eyes were red and puffy and he cringed at the way it made his heart feel. The expression on her face sent him back to a time he did not want to remember.
“I didn’t know there would be anyone here.” She sniffed and wiped her nose on the sleeve of her jacket. He smiled and reached into his pocket for a tissue.
“You wanna talk about it?”
“Not really.” He reached out his hand and helped her get up. She looked into his eyes, taken by their depth.
“Ok, well we can just walk then. I’ll talk.”
“Ok.”
“How about I tell you a story?”
“Ok.”
“There was once a beautiful kingdom far away. The people were all very happy there, under the rulership of a kind and loving royal family. During an evening ball, the king of said kingdom set his sights on a beautiful woman. A strong independent thinker… a scientist. He wooed her and dined her and asked for her hand in marriage. He had fallen madly in love with her.” He stopped walking and Liz turned to face him. She was engrossed in his story and in the sound of his voice as he delivered it. There was something so familiar about this man… something that made her uncomfortable.
“Eventually, they married. They had a wonderful relationship, full of love and laughter. So he entrusted his brother to watch over her, protect her, while he was away on royal duties. Unfortunately, a war broke out and the two were separated and sent away. And the king vowed he would find his love again.” He was hovering over her, his breath warm against her hair. His body was dangerously close and she felt her stomach turning. She looked up, a force within her making her hands shake and her heart speed up.
“Did he find her? This love of his?”
“He hopes so.” He leaned in and kissed her as the winds picked up. She felt odd. This was wrong. She didn’t want to kiss him. She didn’t love him. But there was something about him that drew her. She closed her eyes and tried to remember. Suddenly, a strong feeling overwhelmed her and she saw what seemed to be visions suddenly flashing in her mind.
*FLASH*
“Good morning my love.”
“Good morning.” She looked up, the fabric of the canopy falling softly by the sides of the bed. She wrapped herself in the thick, dark comforter and closed her eyes again.
“I am off to a meeting on Nebula, but I will return in a few days. Explore the castle. Make yourself at home.” He kissed her forehead and grabbed his long coat.
“I love you Ayleyna.” She smiled, unable to say anything back. She didn’t want to lie to him. She loved him… she did. But as hard as she tried, she was not in love with him.
“Be careful out there.” He kissed her lips goodbye and turned once more at the double doors. “Zan will be available throughout the day if you need him.”
She nodded and watched him leave. She lay back down on the bed, her head spinning. She had gotten married last night and she was living in a new castle with strangers. But there was one cloud of hope. She’d get to spend the afternoon alone.
“Good morning milady.” Zan walked in with a tray of breakfast and stopped short at seeing her naked body under the covers. “Oh! Forgive me, Mekhi told me you were awake.”
He turned around, trying to avoid the awkward situation, but the image of her milky shoulders and dark brown hair remained burned in his mind.
“It’s all right Zan. Let me just refresh myself. I’ll be out shortly.” She jumped up and wrapped a blanket around her as she ran into the main wash room. “Feel free to wait here, I’ll only be a few minutes.” She jumped into the hot bath that had been prepared for her and sighed. How wonderful… and a beautiful man sat just in the other room. She shook her head, refusing to let her mind take her there.
“I have a full day planned for us. A tour of the castle, lunch in the royal gardens, perhaps a ball.” His voice was deep and sweet like honey. She loved to listen to him speak. She finished bathing and combed her wet hair as she jumped into her day gown. She knew she was supposed to make use of the maid services, but she was used to working herself. She combed out her long brown hair and braided it. Finally, she was ready to be seen in public.
“It sounds wonderful. Really, but there is no need to serve as my amusement Zan. I am perfectly all right alone.” She smiled and began to tidy the bed.
“What are you doing? That is for the servants. And I am not amusing you, I am getting to know my brother’s wife. So come, let us enjoy the beautiful day.” He handed her the tray of breakfast and she smiled as she started with the helping of fruit.
“Thank you.”
“I know this is all very new to you. It might be frightening. I just want to make you feel at home.” She smiled staring into his golden eyes. He returned the smile, an odd feeling overtaking him. She just needed a friend. He would be that friend for her.
*REALITY*
“Who are you?”
“You know.”
“Mekhi?” She looked at him in shock, her head running wild with the thoughts she just had. Could he see them? Could he feel them? Things were not all they seemed in that day dream.
“Ayleyna.”
“It’s not possible.” He looked down and smiled, she followed his glare to a glowing “V” shape on her hand.
“I found you.”
A/N: Hello everyone! Thanks for the feedback! So glad you guys are getting into this story! Ok, now here's some history- it will explain some things about Max and Liz's undeniable connection. :-) It's gonna get real intense. I also wanted to tell you all, that I put out an APB on a banner for my fic and got a great response! I got TWO! lol... they're both beautiful. One is from LilacStar and the other is from the challenger herself, miss Anais Nin. The cool thing is that they both felt the colors to describe the story were blue and both came up with very cool interpretations. I will post Lilac Star's first. Then in my next post, I will post Anais Nin's... she's adding the finishing touches. Thanks so much guys and great jobs!!!
Chapter 7:
“You are leaving again.” She looked up at him, a sense of frustration in her eyes. How could she get to know her new husband if he was always away or busy or at a function? She knew very little about him, except that he loved her, and he seemed to feel that was enough.
“Being a King is not easy my dear.”
“Being a Queen is cake.” Her voice was slightly venomous and he looked at her questioningly.
“Are you unhappy here Ayleyna?” His eyes held a sadness that broke her heart. This man was sweet and gentle. He took care of her and admired her. And yet she could not bring herself to love him. How could she? She didn’t know him! Truthfully, her heart had fallen upon a different face, a man with similar amber eyes.
“No. Quite the opposite Mekhi. I love it here. Everyone has been so warm and welcoming. I love the castle and being able to pick flowers and read books in the library and attend grand balls. But I miss our conversations and our picnics.” She was being completely honest. She missed his company.
“What about Vilandra? Perhaps you can go out with her?”
“We talk occasionally, and we have fun planning the dances. But she has a very busy social life, much like yourself.”
“Forgive me love. But while I am gone, you are the only thing on my mind.” He kissed her forehead. She looked down, knowing full well that while he was gone, she was usually occupied; so perhaps, she had no reason to complain.
“Go out Ayleyna, make friends. I promise, it’ll make the time go by much faster.”
“Well, at least I have Zan to talk to….” Mekhi turned his head questioningly. His eyes seemed to inquire about his brother.
“Zan?”
“Yes. He’s been nice enough to show me around town. Keep me busy. Whenever Vilandra isn’t available.”
“I see. Well, he is there to look out for you. I am glad he is fulfilling his duty.” Mekhi felt a tinge of jealousy at his brother’s spending more time with his wife then he could. Who was he fooling? His brother was but a prince, and being King kept him very busy. It was only coming home to Ayleyna that kept him sane.
“All right love. I will see you in a few days.”
“Take care.” She saw him off and headed back to her chambers, her mind lost in thought. Being Queen was not so bad. After all, she didn’t have to work as hard and she had started to build a lab all for herself. In fact, her biggest project was in construction, a time machine she referred to as The Granolith. It would be ingenious if she could get constructed and working properly.
“Penny for your thoughts.” Zan stood before her, his eyes shining and a sly smile on his face. Next to him stood his best friend and commander, Rath.
“Your Majesty, we finally have the pleasure to meet.” He kissed her hand and nodded respectfully.
“The pleasure is mine. I have heard wonderful things about you.” She smiled, trying to keep her nerves under control. There was a look in Zan’s eye that she did not trust.
“What are you up to?” Zan looked into the open library doors and back at Ayleyna.
“You were not going to go in there and read again were you? Because that would be a real shame; the day is beautiful outside and we have decided to go out to the market.” She looked up at the sudden sound of the word. The market. It was where she and her father had spent so many days. She looked down, debating how smart it was to go with this man, the man that made her heart beat and her stomach turn every time she looked at him. She also knew how wrong that was. And yet, looking into his eyes, there was a magic. What would have happened if she’d met Zan first? The question plagued her. Life would likely be very different.
“I see it in your face. You want to go. Go, get ready and we will go pay your father a visit.” He smiled and pushed her into the room. He looked back at Rath’s serious face.
“What?”
“Be careful Zan.”
“Careful? Of what?”
“I see the way you look at her.” Zan looked up curiously at Rath’s worried eyes.
“What are you talking about?”
“Do not let your emotions get the best of you. They make you weak, and she… she’s dangerous. Those big brown eyes, that long brown hair. I see how you feel about her Zan. It sits on your face. You cannot do that. She’s your brother’s wife.”
“Oh come on! It is not like that at all.” Zan stood up straight, a feeling of discomfort coming over him. Could Rath see what he himself had been trying to deny?
“Just be careful.”
“I’m ready.” She came out, her hair in a French braid and her day gown making her glow. Zan shook his head. Maybe Rath was right.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

“Father!”

“Ayleyna!” She ran over to the man she missed so much and hugged him. Zan and Rath stood in the background watching the reunion. Zan felt his heart tug. She was unhappy at the palace.

“What are you doing here?”

“I came to visit you! To say hello! I miss you!” She hugged him again and turned to look at the men behind her. “Father, this is his Majesty Zan and General Rath. This is my Father.”

“A pleasure Sir.” Ayleyna smiled happily and turned to see the woman standing behind her father.

“Serena!” She hugged her tightly. It was her very best friend. God, how she missed her.

“Ayleyna, we will be back for you in an hour.” She nodded and smiled thankfully at Zan. He had just made her day.

“Look at you! You look so different!”

“And you, you have changed!” Serena smiled, tucking her blonde hair behind her ears nervously. She was now talking to the new Queen of Antar.

“I miss you so much Serena.”

“Oh silly. You have married the King. You should feel lucky. Don’t miss us, just think of us every once in a while!” Ayleyna laughed and sat with Serena to catch up.

“So you have been helping my Father.”

“Yes, he hired me after you left. I was more than glad to help him. I get to travel everywhere.”

“I miss it.”

“What the work? You get to live in the palace Ayleyna… under the adoring eye of Mekhi… what more would you want?” Serena lowered her eyes sadly. She still wondered what would have happened if she’d gone to the ball that night. She had been caring for her sick mother and could not attend. Would he have seen her? Chosen her perhaps? She remembered the day Mekhi was crowned King. She had looked into his golden eyes from the crowd and fallen immediately in love with him. But she would never have imagined this would happen. That her best friend would have ended up the queen. All in all, she was very happy for Ayleyna and was glad that one of them had reached that level of happiness.

“I’ve been thinking… about maybe asking Mekhi if Father could come and live with us. In the palace. There is more than enough room. Perhaps you could come too! I would love to have you there with me! Someone to talk to and to get in trouble with. There is nothing to do there but read. I feel so lonely.” Ayleyna looked around sadly and saw the shock in Serena’s eyes.

“But you have it all!”

“And no one to share it with! Mekhi is always out on business and I’m left alone! Well, not completely alone. Zan usually keeps me busy.” She smiled at the sound of his name and quickly wiped it away. No, she could not let her mind wander there.

“Well, I guess I would love to live with you in the palace!” Serena smiled widely, imagining the fun they could have.

“I can show you my science lab! Can you believe they let me sit in there all day and do whatever I want?!”

“They do not know any better!” Serena laughed and continued cleaning up the cart as Ayleyna continued to tell her about life in the castle.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“Ayleyna.”
“Oh, hello Zan.” He looked up at her odd creation.
“What is this?”
“It is called the Granolith. It is a time travel machine. It has a built in ship. It serves as an emergency exit device.”
“Maybe you should patent it. Tell Rath and have him train the soldiers to use it.” He laughed and she looked up indignantly.
“Are you teasing? It will be wonderful when I am done with it, you will see.”
“No, I do not tease. I really do think it is incredible.” He smiled and looked at her serious eyes.
“Did you have fun at the market yesterday?”
She stopped what she was doing and looked him deeply in the eyes. She could never thank him for that display of kindness.
“Zan… it was wonderful. Thank you. Thank you so much.”
“Anytime,” he smiled loving being next to her. There was something about her demeanor that made it impossible to leave her. She held a magic and a passion and when he was near her he felt complete in ways he had never thought possible.
“Was there something else?”
“Oh… yes, actually there was. There is a meteor shower tonight. I thought that perhaps we should go out to the gardens and see it.”
“Really?! I’ve never seen a meteor shower! When?”
“Actually, in a few minutes. I have the area set up with some snacks and the benches are cleared for us to sit.”
“Oh! Well then, let’s go!” She took off her work gloves and loosened her hair from the pins that held it out of her face. Her long dark hair came flowing down and she tucked it behind her ear the way she always did when she thought no one was watching. He grabbed her hand and they headed to the gardens. She looked out at the area lightly lit with candles. She looked at the picnic basket with some of her favorite snacks. She felt her stomach turn. Why was he doing this?
“Sit, it should be starting soon.” She sat on the marble bench and looked up at the sky eagerly.
“Drink?”
“Thank you.” He handed her a glass of wine and sat next to her on the cold marble bench. He looked up at the sky and saw the first hints of the meteors.
“Look! Look at them!” Ayleyna looked up excitedly at the sky. She stared in awe at the beauty of the stars. The meteors flew across the sky. The candles burned around her and she felt happy for the first time in weeks.
“Oh Zan, they’re beautiful.”
“So are you.” He stared at her face, the beautiful structure of her face and she looked down to meet his eyes.
“This is wrong.”
“I know.” They both knew how much trouble this could lead them too. He leaned forward and she leaned in as their lips touched softly. He could feel the electricity run across his body and wondered if she felt it too. She opened her eyes slowly, his face still dangerously close to hers.
“We shouldn’t be doing this.”
“I know. But I can’t stay away.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

“Liz.” She sat on her balcony writing in her journal, her head full of ideas. She didn’t know where to go with it. How was it possible that she was the ancient Queen of Antar? That she was married to Mekhi, Max’s big brother? How is it possible that the man she’s still in love with was simply her bodyguard? Her protector? Why did she feel so strongly to Max if she wasn’t meant to be with him. She heard her name again and stood to lean over the balcony, afraid of the face at the bottom. She could not face Joshua again. Not for a while.

“Liz.” She leaned over and looked down sadly at the face she’d grown to love.

“Can I come up?” She nodded and stepped back as Max jumped over the stairs into her private area. They stood in awkward silence for a moment and she finally turned towards her seat.

“How are you?”

“I’m all right.”

“Joshua told us that he told you.”

“Oh yea?”

“Yea.” He walked over to her and watched her close up her journal. He looked down at her hand and saw the faded shape of the v-constellation. His heart broke at the sight. It was her.

“What’s that?” He pointed at her hand and she withdrew it into her jacket.

“It’s Henna. Just this Indian tattoo stuff.”

“Liz, please don’t lie to me.”

“Max…” She looked up, her eyes swelling with tears. “I’m so scared.”

He could feel his heart crying out to her. He wanted to hold her in his arms and tell her everything would be alright.

“I know Liz. I know.” She hugged him and he could do nothing but hold her tightly.

“I don’t know what to do. What to believe.”

“I like to think that life sets out a course for you to follow. What you do with it and how you handle it determines what kind of life you will lead.” She pulled her head back to look into his eyes. What was he saying? That she had a choice? That she could choose not to believe all this?

“What if I told you I’d already made a decision?” He looked into her eyes, fear lingering in his chest. He could lose her forever.

“I’d support you. No matter what.”

“Really?” She brushed a way a few of her tears.

“I still love you Liz. I can’t seem to stop.” He looked at her now, passion and doubt covering his face. He shouldn’t be there. He shouldn’t be telling her this. But he was as lost as she was.

“I love you too.” She leaned forward and kissed him and he returned the kiss, fear and uncertainty acting as their bond.

Joshua stood at the bottom of her balcony, listening to their words. He had come to see how she was doing. He felt the anger in him rise. Things would never change. Not even in this world. Now it was time to tell them all the truth. He would not lose her again.

A/N: Stefanie! I figured it out! lol... I had forgotten you sent me an email with the link... so I got it! :-) I'm putting it up! :-D

And now, the gang has kind of disappeared last chapter, the focus was mainly on Max and Liz. But they play an important part in this... so now, here's what they think.

Chapter 8:

They sat in the living room forming a circle, their eyes gazed intently on each other.

“How’d she take it?”

“She wasn’t thrilled. She’s scared Michael. This is all so new to her.”

“My God, I can’t even imagine what it must be like. I mean, I’m an alien and I can’t even take it all in. I’ve been expecting to hear something like this, something totally crazy but now that it’s happening, I can’t believe it. Poor Liz.”

Isabel felt a sudden pang of guilt for her aloof behavior toward Liz. She was after all her sister in law and the designated Queen of Antar.

“How bout you Maxwell? How are you holding up?” Max looked up to see an expression that was rare to Michael, genuine concern. He looked down at his hands as he rubbed them nervously together. What could he say? His heart was torn.

“I don’t know how to feel. I mean, we were royalty once upon a time. We’re different people now. We don’t know how to get through high school, much less run a planet.”

Isabel looked down; the strain of the situation was painfully obvious on her face. They were stuck, living between two worlds and trying to decide which one to be a part of.

“We can’t just write this off Maxwell. It’s who we are. It’s in our blood.”

“I don’t trust him Michael.”

“Who, Joshua?”

“I don’t feel he’s telling us the whole truth Isabel. We were this great kingdom all happy and prosperous and suddenly we’re taken over and dethroned? Not only that we’re all killed? That doesn’t make sense. Something must have happened…”

“Maybe you just don’t want to believe it because it would mean letting Liz go!”

Isabel looked at Max to catch his expression at Michael’s words. He was way out of line with that one. Sure, she’d never been fond of Liz, but there was no denying that she held her brother’s heart. This whole situation hadn’t been easy for Max to take, learning that the love of his life belonged to his brother. He’d been moping around for days.

“Leave Liz out of this. I’m talking about Joshua.”

“Admit it Max, the only reason you don’t want to believe him is because it would mean leaving your perfect little life and your perfect little Liz!”

“Michael stop!” Isabel stood, her body heavy with emotions. She couldn’t take it anymore.

“Stop what? Telling the truth?” Michael stood taking battle position.

“Why are you so afraid to just be human?” Max shot back and stood up ready to argue the subject when they heard the front door open.

“Kids, we’re home.” Diane and Philip Evans walked into the living room with two boxes of pizza in their hands. They stopped short at seeing the three teens in the living room. The tension could be cut with a knife.

“Oh, hello Michael.”

“Hey.” He grunted and grabbed his coat as he headed out and slammed the door.

“Everything ok?” Philip looked at his two children concerned. Isabel took a deep breath and put on her best smile. She grabbed the boxes of pizza and smelled them as enthusiastically as she could.

“Everything’s fine. Mmm… smells good. Let me help you with these.” She and Diane walked into the kitchen and with one last look Philip followed them. Max sat with his head pounding. His blood was boiling with anger. How dare Michael question his loyalty? He’d always been there for he and Isabel. But it was the mention of Liz that sent him over the edge. He remembered the feel of her lips last night. The fear he could feel in her. How she held him as if for dear life. She needed him. He couldn’t understand how God would allow for them to meet and fall so deeply in love if they were so destined to be apart. He thought back to the flashes he’d seen. His passion for Liz was growing the more he stayed away from her. He’d envisioned them together and laughing, eating on a grassy lawn and watching the stars. He didn’t understand these visions, but they had been strong, and he didn’t doubt she saw them too. It was as if they held a secret all their own and only being together could reveal it.

“Max, you gonna eat?” Isabel cut in, looking at her brother concerned.

“No. I’m going out for a walk.” He grabbed his jacket and headed towards the door. Isabel watched him with worried eyes. The door swung open and a tall figure stood there looking back at their surprised eyes.

“Going somewhere?” Max froze and Isabel moved forward as if stepping to protect her brother. She seemed to be afraid. Joshua stared at her for a moment and then looked away, not wanting to remember what it had felt like to lose his little sister. The fear that had been in her eyes when she came to him, blood on her hands, knowing that in minutes she would die. He shook the image. He didn’t want to think of that now.

“We were about to have dinner.” Isabel slapped herself mentally. How lame? Dinner? She looked at Joshua, inspecting every angle of his face. He was the same person he’d been days before and yet she feared him. The way he stared at Max frightened her. It wasn’t the loving look of a brother, it was a dangerous look. There was jealousy and anger in that look. What had Max done to incite such feelings? Was this about Liz?

“Well, we all have to talk. Tonight, after dark, we should meet somewhere.”

“What do we have to talk about?” Max stood his ground, not wanting to be intimidated by the knowledge the man before him held.

“I will tell you everything tonight. The fall of the house of Antar was a disaster. The only way to prevent it from happening again is to let you know what happened the first time. I don’t intend to let history repeat itself. This mission will be successful and when we return home, we will take our kingdom back.” Isabel cringed at the thought. Home? What was home?

“Where?”

“The Pod Chamber.”

“Fine. We’ll be there.” Max closed the door and Joshua stood for a moment and then walked away.

“Max?” Isabel looked at her brother, his eyes held questions she knew he was waiting to ask.

“We’ll be fine Iz. I won’t let anything happen to you.” She nodded knowingly and wrapped her arms around her chest trying to feel safe again. Max walked up to her and wrapped his arm around her as he led her to the kitchen.

“Let’s go have some pizza.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Maria watched Liz slumped on her bed, her room dark except for the light coming from the window shades.
“Liz, it’s like noon, you should really have more light in here.” Liz turned around wiping the tears from her face and saw Maria’s smile drop.
“What’s wrong?” She rushed to her friend’s side and sat on the bed ready to talk about anything. She reached for her antennas and placed them on the bed while she smoothed her hair. This was going to be a while, she could tell.
“I just… I feel… so lost Maria.”
“No… no Liz. You HAVE to stop doing this. This is so unhealthy babe. Max is just another guy. There will be plenty of Max’s in the future. You’re a hot chic, guys will line up the blocks for a chance at you….” Liz extended her hand out and a mark that looked like a burn sat there, shaped like a V looking like connect the dots.
“What in Christ’s name is that!???” Maria’s eyes grew wide as she grabbed Liz’s hand and passed her fingers over the odd image.
“It’s my symbol.” Liz said between sniffs.
“Your what?”
“Maria… this is proof that Max and I don’t belong together. I don’t belong to him.”
“No, you don’t! You don’t belong to anyone honey, you’re a woman not an object!”
“That’s… not what I mean.”
“Then, what do you mean? Tell me.” Maria softened her voice and looked at Liz curiously. This was not the same strong Liz she knew. This Liz was breaking little by little and it was something big that was breaking her.
“Only Joshua can tell me what this symbol means Maria. Because according to him, I’m part of them.”
“Is this about that walk you had the other night Liz? Because since then you’ve been totally weird.”
“Maria, listen to me. According to him, I’m his bride. I’m the Queen of their planet.” Maria shook her head at what Liz was saying. Did she realize how completely ridiculous she sounded? It was worse than an acid trip in Wonderland.
“Babe… breathe. I think you’re losing it.”
“I’m serious. This is the symbol.” Maria looked down at the symbol and thought about what Liz said and suddenly it hit her. If she was Joshua’s wife… then Max… ohhhhh.
“Liz… I don’t trust him. He’s spooky. He looks at you all weird and stuff and acts all odd. I mean, what do you even know about him? For all you know he’s totally nuts! He could have escaped from the loony bin and is dragging you right along for the ride. If he told you that he was president of a distant country with no recognizable name would you believe him?”
“No…”
“Ok then! So why should you believe some psycho who claims to be the King of Czechoslovakia? Come on… give me a break. He probably just has the hots for you.”
“Maria… it’s more than that. He knows. How else would he know?” Maria thought hard as Liz stared at her for answers.
“Maybe he’s FBI?”
“Doubtful.”
“Yea, maybe not. I’m sticking to the Girl, Interrupted theory. He might just think he can fly and be addicted to laxatives or something. He must be insane.” Maria shrugged her shoulders as if the answer were obvious and Liz couldn’t help but laugh. The though of Joshua on laxatives was incredibly disgusting.
“Maria! I found it!” Alex came rushing in and saw the two girls sitting on the bed in the dark.
“Umm… did I disturb you guys?”
“Yup. We were just about to get into our hooker clothes and parade around in these new aqua bras I got from the mall yesterday.”
“Well, don’t let me stop you. But listen, seriously, I did some research on that Joshua guy right? Cause he’s a creepy little sucker. So anyway, I used my ingenious expertise….”
“Your nerdness…”
“Right. And I found out that our man Joshua Jamison does not go to the University in Santa Fe. I also spoke to Isabel a few days ago. And it confused me that she said Las Cruces. I figured she’d just mixed them up. So I checked there too, just in case. Nope. No record of him. In fact, the last few jobs he had wouldn’t require being anywhere near here. Doctor in Florida, lawyer in New York City, and bar owner in Texas. All under different names I might add.”
“How did you know it was him?”
“I ran his birth date and social.”
“That must be totally illegal Alex.” Liz looked at him obviously intrigued.
“Cool! Can you do that for anyone?” Maria raised her eyebrows and Liz hit her with a pillow hoping to snap her back to reality.
“What? Just asking.”
“So he isn’t what he seems.”
“I have to find out what’s going on with him.”
“No! You don’t! Liz, didn’t we just talk about how he’s some sort of psychopath? And Alex just walked in and told you that he’s LIED to us! And you want to dig deeper into this? What about STAY AWAY do you not understand?”
“I think she’s right Liz. There’s something not right about the guy. And he looks at you funny. As if he knew something about you. It makes me really uncomfortable.”
“What should I do? Just sit around and let him play with my life? I can’t do that you guys. I have to get to the bottom of this.” Maria and Alex sat in silence, not sure quite what to say.
“Then we’re helping. You’re not leaving us out of this Liz. Sorry.” Maria stood and put her antennas back on her head.
“She’s right Liz. You’re stuck with us. Now we just gotta talk to Max and Michael and Isabel and see what they think. Ok?”
“Ok.” Liz smiled and took a deep breath. Perhaps things would be alright.
“Ok, gotta head downstairs girl, your dad’s gonna kill me when he hears the people all complain down there.”
“I’ll be down in a second. I’m just gonna get into my uniform and freshen up.”
“So we’ll meet you downstairs.”
“Yup, in a few.” Her two friends hugged her tightly and headed out the door. She laughed, she really did have the best friends ever. She turned to open the curtains in her window and was startled at the figure kneeling before her.
“Joshua? How long have you been standing there?”
“Come on.”
“Umm… actually, I’m about to start my shift….” The breeze from outside ruffled the window curtains and made Liz’s shoulders shiver with goosebumps.
“I have to show you something.”
“Maybe after.”
“Liz please, don’t make me do this.”
“Do what?” He leaned forward and touched her forehead, a bright white light shining through and she closed her eyes as her body went limp.
“I told you not to make me do this.” He shook his head in disappointment and dragged her body out onto the balcony. She would know it all after tonight.
A/N: SO, are you guys enjoying the direction this story is going in? I hope I have been entertaining you all. THanks so much for your great feedback. Again, you're all really too good to me! ;-) Thanks so much. ENJOY! :-D
Chapter 9:
Liz felt the grogginess of sleep drag her eyes. They felt so heavy. She opened them and looked around, blurry objects taking focus. She saw the rocks and the sand. This was most definitely not her room. She suddenly became aware of the bumps on the road and realized she was in a car. She heard his voice and she felt her neck go tense.
“Glad you’re awake now. We’re almost there.” Joshua sat in the driver’s seat, his eyes intensely focused on the road. She looked ahead and saw a plateau in the distance, some sort of rock formation in the desert.
“Where are we going?”
“You’ll see.”
Maria looked around the café. Where did Liz go? She said a few minutes. What’d she decide to do? Shower? Shave? Blow dry her hair?
She looked over at Alex and motioned for him to meet her in the backroom. He followed right behind her and looked at her with confused eyes.
“Where’s Liz?” They both asked in unison. There was an odd pause between them and they both went running up the stairs to her room. They flung the door open and stood in the empty space. The open window let in a cold breeze.
“Where is she?” Maria began to feel the panic rise to her throat.
“Maybe she went for a walk.” Alex looked around for any sign that something was wrong. He looked at the bed and spotted Liz’s uniform, the buttons all unclipped.
“Maria.” He pointed at the garment and headed to inspect the other side of the bed. Her antennas had fallen on the floor.
“What does that mean?” Maria looked around, suddenly feeling unsafe.
“I think we should call Max.” Maria looked at Alex, unsure how he was staying so calm. Was Liz kidnapped? Was she abducted? Did she vanish into thin air? Did she spontaneously combust?
“She’s fine Maria.” Alex responded as if reading her mind. He grabbed her hand and dragged her back downstairs.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Max looked anxiously at the clock. Darkness didn’t want to come soon enough.

“So anyway, I guess Mr. Richards has this idea that I actually enjoy his class…”

Isabel was blabbering, keeping the family occupied. It was moments like these that reminded him why he loved the human race. He could enjoy the moment so much more if he could stop thinking about being a prince on a different planet. The whole being an alien thing was really starting to suck. The phone rang suddenly disrupting his thoughts.

“I’ll get it.” He stood and headed towards the kitchen.

“Hello?”

“Hi, umm can I speak to Max Evans?” He listened to the voice on the other line. Was this….?

“It’s Maria DeLuca.” Oh, it was.

“Hey Maria, is everything ok?”

“Umm, I was just wondering if you’d heard from Liz at all today.”

“No, I thought she was working today.”

“She was, you see we were talking and then she was gonna get ready for work, then we left the room and went downstairs and she said in a few minutes and we said ok and waited and waited and she’s gone and she didn’t have her uniform on yet and….”

Max felt his head spin with information. Maria was spitting things out at 90 miles an hour.

“Hold on, hold on. So what you’re saying is she’s missing?”

“Yea.”

“For how long?”

“About a half hour.”

“Ok… ok, give me a few minutes. I’ll be right there.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“Ok. We’re here.” Joshua stepped out of his black Lexus and headed over to the passenger side as Liz stepped out behind him. They stood, Liz standing a few steps back, looking up at the formation.
“What is it?”
“I’ll show you.” He reached back and grabbed her hand as he proceeded to drag her up the side. They reached a flat landing and he let go of her hand to place his on the rock. A glow came from the rock and suddenly opened revealing a cave inside. He walked in first and despite her better judgment, Liz followed. She looked around… a dim blue light radiated throughout the space. Her eyes fell upon the four broken pods and she stared at them in awe.
“This is where I was born.” Joshua stood next to her and followed her amazed gaze. She thought of Max’s words when she’d confronted him with questions.
***
“The ship crashed in 1947, you’re 16”
“We were in some kind of incubation pods.”
***
“This is really it.” He could hear the wonder in her voice. The curiosity of her scientific mind was at work.
“Oh, but it gets better.” Joshua smiled and reached into his pocket. He pulled out a silver orb with a foreign symbol.
“What is THAT?” Her eyes widened at the sight. It was a real alien artifact.
“It’s a communicator. My protector stole it from the FBI before he died.”
“Your protector?”
“Yes. We were designated a protector, a full alien who would guide us and train us and strengthen us enough to go back home.”
“Full?” Liz now felt extremely confused. If they weren’t full aliens, what were they? What was she?
“We’re hybrids. Human and alien DNA together.” He stopped to look at her expression. What was going through that brain of hers?
“What… what about me?” She hesitated, unsure if she really wanted the answer to her question.
“You’re fully human. You’re… defective. A pod was originally made for you, but Serena felt…”
“Serena?”
“Yea, she’s the woman who sent us here. She was a close friend of yours back on Antar.”
Liz nodded as if that was common sense. Of course she’d have a smart scientist best friend on another planet. Sure, that all made sense.
“Anyway, she worked out some formulas you’d written out and somehow managed to make you totally human. She kept it that way, she felt you were probably safer.” Joshua took a step closer to Liz now and held out the orb. Liz looked at him unsure. Finally, she grabbed it. He watched her carefully, curious as to what she would do with it.
“I’m still looking for the second one.” She looked at him and then back down at the orb. It was as if she was supposed to do something with it. She walked to the joining point of the four pods and found a space. She stood for a moment, then she placed the orb inside and turned it.
Joshua looked at her amazed. What was she doing? A loud sound erupted and the cave shook as the pods separated, two to the left and two to the right, opening to expose a large room. She walked in and stared at the huge image before her. It looked like a funnel and the walls were engraved in the foreign writing.
“How did you…?” Joshua walked in behind her and stopped to look around. It was incredible.
“I just knew.” Liz turned to face Joshua and was startled by how close he was to her.
“You remember, don’t you?” He stared intensely into her eyes.
“It’s called the Granolith.”
“I meant our past.”
“It’s how to go back. There’s a built in ship.”
“Liz.”
“I’m not sure how to start it.”
“LIZ!” He grabbed her shoulders and placed his finger on her lips.
“I only remember parts. Bits and pieces like a movie. I… I don’t know what they mean.” Liz looked away, uncomfortable about the intensity of his gaze.
“It means you feel it.” He leaned forward and pressed his lips to hers, a passionate intensity making her frazzled. She felt dizzy and suddenly she felt an odd tickle in her brain. She recognized the feeling. She’d gotten it when she kissed Max. But suddenly, there were images.
~FLASH~
He kissed her, his lips hot with passion, his hands lost in her hair. She felt lost in him, in his deepness and she gave herself into the desire. He moved down to kiss her neck and she opened her eyes to look at him. His amber eyes looked up adoringly.
“I love you.” He whispered in his deep voice and she felt her heart fill with adoration.
~REALITY~
Liz pulled away startled by the vision. What did it mean? Was that Joshua who made her feel that way? She felt her heart sink. It had only been Max who’d ever incited such fantasies, such intense feelings, such adoring stares. She looked now at Joshua, with similar amber eyes that were still quite different from her Max. Perhaps she did love him in another life. Perhaps they were as happy as he implied. Perhaps this was her destiny.
“Liz!” Max, Michael and Isabel came running in, followed by Alex and Maria. She turned to face them, an unsure expression on her face.
“Are you ok?” Max stood before her looking menacingly at Joshua.
“I’m alright. I… I remember things Max. Things about Antar, at least I’m starting to. I’m going to learn more… but I… I remember Joshua.” She looked down sadly knowing what that meant. Max felt his heart break in his chest.
“Good, I mean, he’s the one you’re destined to be with.” Max stepped back feeling defeated.
“And Antar?” Joshua asked trying to mask his excitement.
“I’ll go back with you.” Liz looked at Maria’s shocked face and tried to control the tears that were threatening to attack her.
“Great. We’ll leave in a week.”
