Summary: Max did leave with Tess in Departure (ugh!) and Liz stayed on Earth. ‘Nough said.

“Grandma, is there anything I can get for you?” a soft voice asked next to her.

Elizabeth Parker-Harris opened her eyes and looked at her granddaughter. Smiling she whispered, “No love, I’m fine.”

Standing, Beth leaned down and placed a kiss on the wrinkled check of her most favorite person in the world. “If your sure, I’ll get going. I have class at three.”

“I’m fine.” She watched the young woman pick up a bag next to the door and as she was reaching for the handle Liz felt a pain race across her chest. Letting out a groan she called, “Beth.”

Turning, Beth saw her grandmother pointing to something on the dresser across from the bed. Nodding, she picked up the picture frame and placed it into her weathered hands.

Taking the frame, Liz brought it closer to get a better look and never saw Beth leave, shaking her head. Her full attention was riveted on a pair of amber eyes and a set of lips that could still make her heart race. Caressing his cheek, Liz gave into the only source of joy left to her; memories of Max.

It had been over seventy years since she last touched his face for real and not thru his photo. A lifetime of love and pain, happiness and sorrow, but no regrets. How differently she had viewed her life when she had thought Max would be a part of it. That was until he left with Tess and their unborn child.

She replayed that final night over and over in her mind until she had only to close her eyes to feel his arms around her in their last embrace and the warmth of his tears on her cheek. Only her dear friend Maria knew what it cost her to let him go and she had taken that secret with her just last year when she slipped from this world with Michael at her side.

Looking up, Liz traced the line of her life thru the photos crowding the wall cross from her bed. To the far left was a picture of her, Maria and Michael on their graduation day. The girls had been so proud of him, but in typically Michael fashion, he gave them a playful look of suffering. Next to it was a scene from Maria and Michael’s wedding. If you looked close, you could see Liz in the background teas on her face with a mixture of happiness and jealousy in her eyes. The largest picture was of her and her dearly loved Ben standing in front of Horseshoe Falls in New York, the mist raining down them.

Blinking back tears, she saw the growth of her two daughters in candid shots along with all those school pictured they begged her to take down. She had always refused telling them that she enjoyed waking up to their smiling faces. Tucked in amongst the photos were her degrees in microbiology and physics that she somehow found the time to earn between the dance recitals and soccer games, the PTO meetings and Girl Scouts. Ben had supported her every step of the way and she loved him more for that than anything else.

Never let it be said, her husband Ben use to joke, that Liz didn’t make sure you knew she loved you. That was a motto Liz kept close to her heart and she had to thank Max Evans for showing her that even thought two lives touch for a short time, it wasn’t about how much you loved someone but about the quality of that love. If she had never had Ben and the girls, she knew in her heart of hearts, that she had been loved deeply, and that was something no one could ever take away from her.

So now as she approached the end of her life, she looked back and wondered if there was anything she would change and to her surprise, she couldn’t find one thing that she would do different. Well maybe one. Maybe she could have begged Max to stay that night, or to have him take her with him, knowing Tess carried their child.

And give up all that you have here? asked the voice she would know anywhere.

“If it meant having you,” she replied to the empty room.

But you always had me Liz. I have been forever in your heart, as you have been in mine.

“I’ve missed you so much Max. I think about all the things we could have done together and I weep at my selfishness in wanting you here when I know your place was with your son.”

What of Julianna and Jocelyn? You were meant to bring them into being and your world is a better place because of them.

“They could have been ours. They should have been ours.”

They belong to you and Ben. As it should be.

The age old argument concluded as it always did in her mind and Liz let out a sigh. Would she ever know what happened to Max and Tess? Michael had tried until his dyeing day to make contact with them, to no avail. Liz had also wondered how Isabel’s life had turned out when she finally got the chance to meet her real mother and she prayed that is was as happy as the one she had led.

Glancing again at the smiling face of her soul mate, Liz let her eyes slip close for what she knew would be the final time and she sent a prayer to God asking to see Max again, if only for a moment. She could face what ever was to come if she could just know he was okay.

The sun set slowly that cold day in February and as the final rays filtered across the still body lying on the antique four poster bed, if any one was watching, they might have seen a girl of sixteen rise up from the lace covered coverlet and take the softly glowing hand of the boy with amber colored eyes who had waited a lifetime for her. Looking up into his beloved face, Elizabeth Parker-Evans gave him the smile he had never forgotten and arm in arm, they began another journey, one that destiny delayed, but could never stop.
