Always Beautiful~
I sit back on the chaise lounge in one corner of our bedroom, reading ‘The Brainfever Bird’ waiting for my lovely wife to emerge from the bathroom, not really concentrating on the book in front of me It like a ritual with her, a quick shower in the morning and a long hot soak in the tub in the evening. Yet she never comes out with her skin looking like a prune after having been soaking in the water for so long.
Every time she steps out of the bathroom, with the towel wrapped around her, she takes my breath away. I still can’t believe that we are finally husband and wife. We’ve been married for two months, were together for six years before that, not counting the brief period we were together before the message from her real mother...
“Penny for your thoughts.” I look up and see her smiling at me from the bathroom door, applying lavendar-scented lotion to her arms, her damp hair curling around her shoulders, she’s most beautiful to me like this, devoid of make-up, skin still moist from the bath, it brings out the vulnerability in her
Shutting the book I sit up, “Just thinking that I’m the luckiest man alive and that one of these days I’m going to wake up and realize it was all a dream, that we’re back in high school and I’m still pursuing you.” I grin at her remembering those days when I was like a fawning puppy
She comes towards me and drops a light kiss on my head, her scent enveloping me, “I liked you pursuing me…that’s why I prolonged it for as long as I could.” There’s a twinkle in her eyes and a devilish grin on her face, which she knows I can’t resist.
I tug at her towel but she pulls away quickly, “Not now Stud…later, once we’re back from the party.” She winks at me before turning away to go and sit down on the stool in front of her mirror. With a wave of her hand her hair is dried, then she proceeds to comb it the natural way before using her powers once more to style it in to a chignon. I never tire of seeing her using her powers.
It’s late in the evening
She’s wondering what clothes to wear
She puts on her make up
And brushes her long blonde hair
And then she asks me
Do I look alright
And I say yes, you look wonderful tonight
“Is that the tie you’re going to wear?” She asks me without turning around, but looking at me through the mirror, while applying lipstick
“Yeah…why?”
“Because, that green tie doesn’t match that maroon shirt you’re wearing. The pale pink one hanging in your closet will set it off perfectly.”
I have my own stylist, as you can see. She’ll never let me out of the house without checking me over at least once, not that I am complaining. I go to change the tie and by the time I come back, she’s ready, looking stunning in a noodle strap burgundy coloured dress that flares out from her waist and stops just below her knees, she’s put some sparkling dust on her shoulders which catches the light.
“You look ethereal Isabel.” I step in to her space to kiss her but she put her hands on my chest to stop me, “The lipstick.”
So instead I kiss her cheek and then give her neck a quick nuzzle, loving the sound of her giggling because she’s ticklish, “Alex stop…hmm…come on not fair, you know I’m ticklish there.”
She swats at my arms but doesn’t really push me away. Finally I pull back with a grin on my face, “Let’s go, we don’t want to be late for your brother’s engagement party.”
We go a party
And everyone turns to see
This beautiful lady
That’s walking around with me
And then she asks me
Do you feel alright
And I say yes, I feel wonderful tonight
'My wife'…every nerve of mine tingles whenever I say that out loud. I am so proud of her. She’s overcome so much and yet, she feels she’s the lucky one to have me in her life. The other night we were talking in bed after dinner, and she told me - “Alex I love you because you make me believe in myself, that I can be the best.”
She’s like the flame, towards which all the moths are drawn; everyone looks at her, spellbound by her radiant beauty. I ask the bride to be, Liz, one of my best friends to dance with me, stealing her away from Max. “Are you ready for marriage Lizzie?” I ask her while I twirl her around
“Well if Max and I are half as happy as Isabel and you, then I think I am perfectly ready.” She jokes light heartedly, they deserve this, after going through so much together in high school.
“Can I steal my husband back now?” I hear her voice from behind me, Liz smiles, turning me around to face Isabel “Have I told you how handsome you’re looking tonight?” she whispers in to my ear, running her fingers through the short hairs on the nape of my neck
“You’re looking pretty delectable yourself.” I whisper back and she laughs softly
I feel wonderful
Because I see the love light in your eyes
And the wonder of it all
Is that you just don’t realize
How much I love you
The evening comes to an end, as usual there is a round of goodbyes, hugs and kisses. “Let me drive.” Before I can protest she takes the keys out of my coat pocket, “Izzy, I can drive.”
“No, you’re looking tired and you had a long day at work. End of discussion.”
Later on, lying in bed, facing each other, I reach out, curling my fingers around a few locks of her hair. “I’ve been meaning to tell you something.” I keep quiet waiting for her to carry on, “For the past month or so I haven’t quite been myself.”
My heart starts racing, imagining all the worst case scenarios but knowing me so well she places her left hand on my chest, just above my heart, “It’s nothing bad, before you go jumping to conclusions…you’re going to be a daddy in another seven months.” I lie still for a few seconds, absorbing her words before I jump off the bed yelling, “I’m going to be a father.” I run out on to our balcony and yell there, “I’m going to be a father.”
I charge back in to the room and join her on the bed, wrapping my arms around her, “No wonder you’re looking extra radiant tonight. This is the best news I have ever received Iz…I’m going to be your baby’s daddy.” She kisses me passionately and then says, “Our baby you silly man, our baby.”
It’s time to go home now
And I’ve got an aching head
So I give her the car keys
She helps me to bed
And then I tell her
As I turn out the light
I say my darling, you were wonderful tonight
Oh my darling, you were wonderful tonight
The End
