CHAPTER 1

“I used to wear my baggy jeans!” The staff sergeant barked out.
“Used to wear my baggy jeans!” The soldiers repeated.
“Now I’m wearin army greens!”
“Now I’m wearin army greens!”

The staff sergeant ran next to the line formation of soldiers running up the steep slope of what the soldiers had dubbed NBC Hill.

“I used to drive a Cadillac!”
“Used to drive a Cadillac!”
“Now I ruck it on my back!”
“Now I ruck it on my back!” Liz Parker jogged up the hill while singing along to the cadence behind her roommate Maria DeLuca. Maria was in front of Liz starting to bend over a bit. Liz knew what that meant. She was going to quit any minute now. So Liz did the same thing she did every time Maria got to that point in a run, she put her hand on her back and helped push her forward to keep her moving.

“Come on, DeLuca, you can do this. We’re almost home,” Liz gasped out. She could hear Maria’s breathing getting heavier, but she wasn’t speaking. “Let’s go home, girl!”

She kept her hand on Maria’s back, pushing her along until SSG Markus yelled, “Quick time...march!” The soldiers came to a walk and marched along the street headed back to the grassy knoll they had started this 4 mile run on. “Left, left, left, right, left! Mark time...march!” SSG Markus called out and the soldiers began walking in place until he yelled “Halt!” He then told everybody to get in formation.

Once all the squads were formed up on the grass, the command sergeant major, CSM Evans came to the front to address her soldiers. “Good run, guys! Nobody fell out, that’s what I like to see.” She called them to attention and dismissed them to go do personal hygiene.

Liz and Maria drove back to the barracks in Maria’s red jetta. “Thanks for back there. I don’t think I would’ve made it without you.”

“That’s what friends are for,” Liz told her without thinking about it.

“So, what are we doing tonight, Parker?”

“Let’s go to Icon. It is Friday night.”

“Cool. What’s on the agenda for today?” Maria asked a little nervous.

“Gas chamber.”

“Oh thank God, easy training.”

Liz laughed at her best friend. Her and Maria met last year in Basic Training on Fort Jackson, South Carolina. They were roommates back then and went to AIT, job training, in the same place as roommates again, and finally made it to Fort Carson, Colorado, working together in Finance, and you guessed it, roommates once again.

Maria had been having some problems with her PT since she started Basic Training, but she has definitely gotten a lot better since then. Her run could still use some work, but everything is going great for her. Contrary to Liz, who was a runner in high school and has had no problems with her PT at all. So Liz likes to help Maria out every now and again. That’s what camaraderie is all about, anyway.

Liz joined the Army straight out of high school. She had no idea what she wanted to do with her life and figured that the Army would help her find it. At 19 years old, she was well on her way. Maria, also 19, on the other hand, told Liz that she had joined for the guys in uniform. Which is probably why Liz loved her job, and Maria hated it.

Once they got back to their barracks, Maria showered while Liz ironed her uniform. The barracks were relatively new, for that they were grateful. Just inside the door to the outside hall, was a little kitchenette, and a bathroom to the left. There were two doors right outside the bathroom, one room for each roommate. Inside each room was a bed, a walk in closet, a dresser, and a computer desk. Liz had a computer on her desk and they both had a 25 inch tv on top of their dressers. Maria had a large stereo in the corner of her room and was always blasting music. Not that it mattered, the halls were always packed with young soldiers partying. It was like living in a dorm which was kind of cool.

Since the war in Iraq started, soldiers have been partying extra hard, just in case they would be deploying anytime soon. They wanted to have as much as fun as possible first. Liz spent a lot of time studying to be a sergeant. She had a promotion board coming up and she didn’t want to blow it. She had been a specialist for a year now and wanted her stripes. Unlike Maria, who wanted nothing more than to continue being a specialist forever. Maria always told her, “Being a specialist is the shit! You’re nothing more than an overpaid private, and I love it. Too experienced to be put on crappy details, and too inexperienced to be blamed for your actions! Why would anyone wanna be a sergeant?” But Liz disagreed. She wanted the responsibility and the power, not to mention the extra money.

Once the girls were showered and dressed, they headed to the finance office to get ready to go out for training. Every Friday was a training day. So instead of dealing with pay problems and irritated soldiers, they went out and did some sort of training. Today they would be going to the gas chamber where they would don gas masks and get CS Gas thrown at them. It was easy training though, just like Maria had said.

They had all marched up NBC Hill to the gas chamber, this time in all their gear. The soldiers called it full battle rattle. It included a ruck sack, a gas mask, a helmet on their heads, and an M16 in their hands. The gear could get pretty heavy at times, and with the weather in May being 68 degrees outside, it got pretty hot underneath all that gear. By the time the unit had made it to the chamber, Liz and Maria were sweating bullets. Once they had been through the chamber, they were sitting on the grass with their helmets off, Liz and Maria started talking about their plans for the night.

“Yeah, so we’ll get back to the barracks, order a pizza, eat dinner, and head out around 10. Cool?”

“Yeah, that’ll work, Parker. Is anyone else coming?”

“No, just me and you...unless you wanna invite SGT Guerin, that is.” Liz referred to Maria’s crush. Michael worked with them in the office and Maria wanted nothing more than to jump his bones.

“What about me?” Sergeant Michael Guerin came upon the girls in grass.

“Hey, sarge, DeLuca and I were just wondering if you wanted to come clubbin with us tonight?”

“No thanks. I gotta be in some dumb ass parade tomorrow and I gotta be up at like 0600. Maybe Saturday though, alright?”

“Okay,” Liz told him as he walked off. Maria tilted her head to the side as she watched him walk away. Liz laughed at her friend and shook her head.

*********************

Liz and Maria walked into Icon, a local nightclub, at around 10:30, looking around for some prospective dance partners. They found a little table in the corner and Liz sat down while Maria went to grab a couple cokes. Liz scanned the area, just checking the place out when she saw the hottest guy in the club strut toward her. He had dark hair and tanned skin, but that’s all she could really see because of the lighting. He smiled as he approached her and leaned close to ask, “Don’t you smile? You are having fun, aren’t you?” Liz looked directly into his beautiful amber eyes, and smiled brightly for him. Then he asked her, “Wanna dance?” Liz nodded and allowed the handsome stranger to lead her to the floor.

Chapter 2 was really short so you get chapter 3 as well.

CHAPTER 2

Maria came back to the table with two cokes and looked around for Liz. She spotted her friend in the arms of a good looking guy on the dance floor, so she sat down and was approached by a cute guy just a few moments later. “Hey! Wanna dance?” She looked into his baby blues and took his hand.

On the dance floor, Liz had yet to stop staring into this man’s gorgeous eyes. “My name’s Max,” he said as he pulled her closer.

“Liz,” she replied with a smile. They danced a little longer before Liz told Max she needed a break. They made their way through the crowd back to her table. They sat down and tried to get to know each other better.

“So, Liz, are you in college or something?”

Liz laughed. “No...actually, I’m in the army.”

Max looked at her in disbelief. “No way!”

Liz blushed and smiled. “Way...” she started to feel defensive when he didn’t say anything. “What?”

Max put his hands up in surrender. “Nothing! You just don’t look...like...” he couldn’t seem to find the right words that wouldn’t offend her.

Liz shook her head at him. “Like what?”

Max sighed, “You look...too...stunning...to be a soldier, that is.”

“Oh.” Liz grinned from ear to ear. He was so sweet. “Well you should see me in uniform. I look a lot different.”

“I highly doubt it,” Max replied without hesitation. “So, where you from?”

“Roswell, New Mexico.”

“What’s it like out there?”

Liz shrugged her shoulders. “Kinda dull. Just a lot of alien tourist traps and even more tourists.”

“You a party girl, Liz?”

“Not really, no. More like a book worm.”

“Well you’re definitely the most beautiful book worm I’ve ever met.” He flirted with her.

“Thank you,” she ducked her head shyly.

“How old are you?”

“19...you?”

Max hesitated only briefly. “Almost 19. Hope you don’t mind being with a younger man?” He joked with her.

“Not as long as it’s you,” Liz spoke softly and then turned her head down unable to believe she had actually said that.

“What was that?” Max leaned closer to hear her better.

“Nothing,” Liz replied quickly. “Never mind. So are you in college?”

“Yeah!” Max told her excitedly.

“Oh? What do you wanna be when you grow up?” Liz smiled.

“I’m not sure yet.”

“Well then what are you in college for?”

“General studies right now. Just trying to figure out what interests me most, ya know?”

“Yeah,” Liz answered, knowing exactly what he meant and managing to get lost in his amber orbs once again. The staring contest continued for several more seconds.

“Liz?”

“Yeah?” she asked a little breathless.

“Would it be too forward if I told you I wanted to kiss you right now?” His eyes darted from her lips to her eyes. Liz shook her head slowly and met Max halfway in a short, but amazing, kiss. They pulled back briefly before Liz grabbed a hold of Max’s collar and brought him back to her, her tongue sweeping into his mouth as he gasped in surprise.

Liz had actually surprised herself as well as him. She had never been this bold with a guy before and she wasn’t even drunk. A clearing throat made Liz leave his lips to address the owner of that throat.

“Hey, Parker! Having fun?” Maria chuckled. Liz just blushed and looked down.

“Hey, Kyle! I was wondering where you went,” Max said to the guy Maria had shown up with.

“No you weren’t,” Kyle teased. Max blushed then, too.

“Maria, this is Max,” Liz introduced.

“Kyle, this is Liz,” Max followed suite. Liz and Kyle nodded at one another. “So, what’s up?” Max asked Kyle.

“Oh, Maria said that her and Liz were gonna head back to their barracks to get loaded. You down, Maxwell?”

Max looked rather uneasy at the moment and Liz figured it was because of the 2 AM curfew the soldiers had for visitors. She watched Max and Kyle silently communicate, and then put her hand on his bicep. “Don’t worry about the curfew, Max. We’ll sneak you guys in through the back door.”

Maria gave Liz a skeptical smirk. She couldn’t believe Liz was actually being daring for once. Go Liz, she thought to herself and shot her friend an approving look. But Liz was too focused on Max to notice. She really wanted him to come.

Max looked between the three of them and threw his hands up. "Alright! Let’s go!” Liz beamed at him and they all went out to the parking lot. Maria realized that Liz probably didn’t want to leave Max’s side, considering the looks she kept giving him. But Kyle beat her to the punch. “Max, why don’t you take Liz in your car and I’ll go with Maria.” Max nodded quickly and led Liz to his jeep on the other side of the lot. He helped her get in and hopped in himself, shooting her a smile before starting it up and speeding off.

CHAPTER 3

Maria and Kyle were already waiting at the back door when Max and Liz pulled up. “Alright, you guys wait here. We’ll be right back,” Maria told them and walked around front with Liz, her gaze lingering on Max a little longer. Maria rolled her eyes and pulled Liz along by the hand. “We are sooo getting laid tonight, Parker!” Liz just smiled as they walked past the very tired soldier on the CQ desk beyond the front doors of their barracks. They waved at the guy and walked down the hall to the back door to let in their dates.

As soon as they flung open the door, Kyle and Max looked at them guiltily as if they had just been in some sort of argument. “Everything alright?” Liz asked, her gaze roaming between them.

Kyle slapped on a cheeky smile. “Yeah! Max here was just a little worried about getting caught.”

“Kyle!” Max shot his best friend a death glare.

“Oh don’t sweat it, we’ll get you guys out the window if anybody comes. Nobody ever comes though,” Maria assured them.

“See, Max! Nothin to worry about!” Kyle slapped Max on the back and Liz and Maria led the way down the empty hall to their room.

Maria went straight for the mini fridge in the kitchenette and pulled out the tequila bottle and a baggy of lemons.

“I thought Whitman still had that bottle,” Liz asked Maria.

“Nope! I got it back before we went out. Impressed?” Maria quirked an eyebrow.

“Very,” Liz said.

“Who’s Whitman?” Kyle inquired.

“He’s a friend. He lives down the hall. He’s 21 so we keep our liquor in his room. Or rather, my liquor. Right, Liz?” Liz nodded at her jest about Liz being a good girl.

Liz went into the cabinets to get some shot glasses. “Let’s go in Maria’s room. She’s got the stereo.” Liz held the glasses above her head and shimmied her way into Maria’s room, Max watching her flirtatious movements.

Maria flipped on the stereo to the Friday night club mix and turned it up. She sat down on the bed next to Kyle and Max took a seat in the oversized chair in the corner. Liz decided to take a chance. She went and propped herself right up on Max’s lap. He smiled at her and leaned up to get another taste of her sweet lips when Maria’s voice broke the moment. “Here, drink up.” She held out two shot glasses and lemons for each of them. They took the drinks, licked their wrists, and waited for Maria to shake the salt onto their damp skin. With a lemon in one hand and a shot in the other, Max and Liz smiled at each other before licking their wrists, throwing back the shot, and sucking the lemon.

“Whoo!” Maria yelped. “That’s some good tequila. Next up, body shots!” She wiggled her eyebrows.

“That’s what I’m talking about!” Kyle slapped his hands together.

“Wait! I’ve got the perfect song.” Maria went to the stereo and flipped the buttons on the cd changer before pressing PLAY.

The beat came out of the speakers and seemed to flow into their bodies. Maria laid down on the bed on her back and motioned for Liz to join her. The girls laid back and lifted their shirts just a little, inviting the boys with a curl of their index fingers. Max and Kyle looked at each other with a lifted eyebrow and a grin before slowly making their way to the girls.

You got to lick it
Before we kick it
You got to get it soft and wet
So we can kick it

You got to lick it
Before we kick it
You got to get it soft and wet
So we can kick it

Kyle immediately pounced, lifting Maria’s shirt and lapping at her stomach eagerly before shaking out the salt. He sucked the salt off her skin before placing his lips over the shot glass, which was now resting on top of her belly button, and slammed it back. He reached up and sucked the lemon from between her teeth, kissing her in the process.

Boom-ba-da-da-da-da .…
Baby work it

Max, however, took his sweet time. He crawled up Liz’s body, inching her shirt up along the way. He bent down to finally kiss her again, slipping his tongue into her mouth. He left her mouth to pour his shot. He placed the shot just above her belly button. “Stay still,” he whispered. She nodded slightly, afraid of too much movement. Max took one long lick from the top of her jeans to her navel, dipping his tongue inside. Liz moaned, unable to control it, and then darted her eyes to make sure the shot hadn’t fallen. After Max had the salt on her newly exposed flesh, he met her eyes and watched as she mouthed the next part of the song to him.

I met a real cutie
He had a nice tight booty
He seemed to be the freaky lover type
Let's cut right through the chase
C'mon and get a taste
You've got to face it
So that I can get hype

He poured a tiny bit of the shot into her navel making her gasp in delight. He swirled his tongue inside her belly button to lap up the liquor.

You got to lick it
Before we kick it
You got to get it soft and wet
So we can kick it

You got to lick it
Before we kick it
You got to get it soft and wet
So we can kick it

He licked the salt off her abdomen and took the shot before crawling further up her body to suck the lemon from her sweet lips.

Boom-ba-da-da-da-da .…
Baby work it, baby work it

He spit the lemon out, not caring where it fell and kissed her hard before pulling back to look at her again. She mouthed the next part of the song for him.

Before you can stick and move
You got to grin in the groove
You know men are dogs
So go bark up somebody else’s tree
Here boy come come come and get it

Maria and Kyle were grinding on the bed and lapping at each other’s mouths as if they were swallowing one another.

C'mon and show your able
And go below my navel
Don’t be a tease
Just give me what I like
I'm full of freakiness
So give my cat a kiss
And make me purr

So we can do this right

As soon as the distinct sound of a cat’s meow fell from her lips, Max couldn’t take anymore. He kissed her on the lips, stabbing his tongue in and out of her mouth. Liz couldn’t get over how audacious she was being with him, and yet she wouldn’t change it for the world at this moment. He was making love to her mouth, and it was intoxicating. There was no one else in the room as far as they were concerned.

You got to lick it
Before we kick it
You got to get it soft and wet
So we can kick it

You got to lick it
Before we kick it
You got to get it soft and wet
So we can kick it

Boom-ba-da-da-da-da .…
Baby work it, baby work it

20 Fingers - You Gotta Lick It

When the song faded out, Maria left Kyle’s mouth and said, “Alright, come on you guys! This tequila isn’t gonna drink itself.”

They sat around listening to music and drinking more and more for a couple more hours. It was now rounding 3AM when they heard a knock on the main door. Liz and Maria looked at each in fright. Liz scrambled to get to the door while Maria grabbed the now shirtless guys and pushed them into her closet together.

When the coast was clear, Liz opened the door and damn near fell over. “Oh, thank God!” She called back toward Maria. “It’s just Whitman!”

Maria’s voice was heard from the room, “Oh, thank God!”

Alex looked at Liz and asked, “What are you guys doing? You do realize it’s almost 3 in the morning?”

“Yeah, we’re gonna turn in shortly.”

“Alright. I guess you were the ones who swiped the tequila from my fridge?” He asked, knowing Liz was tanked.

“Yup, that was us. Night, Whitman,” Liz excused herself before closing the door. When she turned around, a very drunk Max was right behind her.

“Hey, gorgeous,” he snaked his long arms around her slim waist and pulled her close, kissing her passionately. Liz reached her arm back behind her without breaking the kiss and made sure to lock the door. Max pulled back and asked huskily, “Can I see your room now?”

She nodded while taking his hand and waving goodnight to Maria and Kyle who were wrapped up in each other already on Maria’s bed.

Liz quietly shut the door to her room before turning to the man who had managed to steal her heart away in less than 5 hours.

AN: You guys are great! Alright, after Chapter 4, that burning question will be answered. I promise. Just bear with me through this dreamer part first.

CHAPTER 4

Max and Liz were now on Liz’s bed locked in a heavy make-out session. Somewhere between the bedroom door closing and their bodies falling onto the bed, Liz’s shirt had been removed and her bra unsnapped. Max’s belt buckle had also managed to come undone and his pants open. Liz’s hand found a way into Max’s jeans and began to stroke the bulge she found there.

“Oh shit, Liz!” Max pulled away from her and swallowed hard. Liz could swear he looked nervous.

“What’s the matter?” she asked him breathlessly. “Don’t you want to?”

“Yeah,” Max answered quickly. “But...” Liz has a funny feeling he’s stalling and an even funnier feeling that she knows why.

“Max?”

“Huh?” He met her eyes and gulped loudly.

“Are you a virgin?” she asked gently.

“No!” He replied defensively. She raised her eyebrow in mock question. “Yes,” he sighed.

“Ok,” she nodded. “Do you want me to stop?” she asked seductively.

“NO!” His voice then got a little deeper. “Please...don’t stop.

Liz grinned and leaned down to kiss him sweetly. “Don’t you worry, baby. You just lay back and let me do all the work.”

Liz made quick work of getting herself and Max naked. Max threw his head back against the pillow and Liz straddled his hips, rubbing her natural juices up the length of his hard cock, lubricating him for easy penetration. She reached for her jeans which were now on the floor, and fished a condom out of the back pocket, rolling it onto Max expertly. She lifted up and impaled herself on him slowly. Max groaned loudly...too loudly.

“Shh...” Liz warned him. “You’re not supposed to be here, remember?” Max nodded mutely. He was trying so hard to stay quiet, but this beautiful angel just kept rising and falling in his lap, her eyes closed and her head thrown back. She moaned silently, her mouth opening wide with no sound coming out. How does she do that? He thought. He watched himself disappear and reappear inside her femininity. It was too much. The sight of her above him, and the feel of her around him. He was going to cum any second now. And then she stopped.

Max’s face filled with pleasurable agony. “God, no! Don’t stop...please. Please!” He whispered fiercely.

“Not yet,” she told him. “You need to learn. And I’m here to learn you.”

Liz lifted her body off of him and rolled over, pulling Max on top of her. Max looked into her eyes and asked, “I thought you were going to do all the work.”

“I changed my mind. Do you wanna learn or not?” she joked with him. When he smiled, she continued. “Come on. Show me what you’ve got,” she breathed huskily.

Max entered her swiftly, pumping fast, hard, and deep. He leaned in to take a nipple into his mouth, nibbling slightly for a reaction from her. Her fingernails raked down his back, leaving scratch marks. He kissed her while he continued to thrust, their mouths catching each other’s cries of ecstacy. Liz knew she had to be quiet, but she wanted Max to know that he was doing a good job. So she opened her lips and moaned softly, “Yes, Max! Right there! That’s it, baby, you’re doing great.”

Liz was normally not so vocal in bed, but being with Max was bringing out the wild tigress inside of her. Not to mention that she was fulfilling every girls fantasy of being with a virgin. Max grinned from ear to ear, proud of himself and Liz giggled. You should be proud, she thought.

Suddenly, Max felt Liz’s walls squeeze his shaft and he let go, jerking his body into hers unconsciously, the feeling pure bliss. He couldn’t help the moan that rose straight from the pit of his stomach. But it didn’t bother Liz none. She loved that she had been able to make him feel that.

He fell on top of her, his arms unable to hold him up any longer. Once he was sure he could breathe, he rolled away and pulled off the sticky condom, wet with her and his essence. He noticed the trash can near the bed and deposited it there before rolling back to Liz and pulling her into his arms, holding her tightly while his body trembled.

“Are you okay?” she asked softly.

“I’m perfect. You’re perfect. Thank you.”

“Hey, if it wasn’t me it would’ve been another chick. Anytime, Max,” she smiled sweetly at him. Then she realized that she was slightly sober. Her eyes widened with the realization of what she had just done, with a perfect stranger no less. “Max...I have to tell you...”

“What?” he inquired innocently.

“I’m not like this!” He smiled slightly confused. “I mean...I don’t just bring random guys back here to get drunk and have sex. I’m really not normally this bad.”

“It’s alright, Liz. I understand. I know what you mean. I’m not normally like this either. But you’re special, Liz. I knew the moment I saw you. And I guess that all this makes me kinda special too, huh?”

Liz smiled wide. “Yeah, I guess it does.” She curled up into his warm chest, her eyes suddenly very heavy. And rightly so. She was drunk and tired. She closed her eyes and inhaled his masculine scent before falling asleep in his strong arms.

AN: Okay, okay! Maybe that comment was a little more Maria's style. But hey, sometimes when you're drinking and with people you barely know, you act a little out of character. I think Liz was just glad that she got to him before someone else did, and she was trying to express that. Enough of my rambling, here's the next part.

CHAPTER 5

Max had left early the next morning when Kyle knocked on the door. He had told Liz that he had classes but that he would call her later. He stayed true to his word. They talked on the phone for a few hours before Liz invited him to come over again that night. She had been missing him all day and wanted to see him. He had to admit that he missed her as well.

Kyle had turned out to be a one night stand for Maria. She said he was fun, but nothing long term. She enjoyed being single and didn’t need the attachment. She left it at that.

Max did come over that Saturday night and they had made love for hours in Liz’s bedroom. Liz knew she was falling for him fast. But she didn’t care. He was the most amazing man she had ever met and she didn’t want it to end. When Max and her had laid in bed that night, Max had seemed like he wanted to tell her something, but then he would just say that she was perfect or beautiful whenever she would ask what was on his mind. She knew he was hiding something. There was such mystery behind his eyes, but she wouldn’t pressure him to tell her what it was. She knew that she would find out soon enough.

They spent the next week talking on the phone, exchanging cute emails, and talking to each other via webcam. Liz wanted to be with him so badly, but she was so busy at work, not getting home until 8 or 9 o’clock some nights, she just didn’t have the energy. He told her that he understood and promised to meet up with her next Friday night at Icon. Friday couldn’t seem to come fast enough for the couple. But then, maybe they shouldn’t have wanted it to come so fast.

********************

That Friday morning was nothing but a curve ball since the beginning of the day. It had started snowing during the night and by the morning, the roads were sleek with snow and ice. (I know what you’re thinking. Snowing in May? Hey, trust me on this, Colorado’s weather is that funky.)

The finance unit was doing land navigation for training that day. The commander, CPT Bruno, stood in front of his perfect formation of soldiers, and said, “Alright soldiers! I know we were supposed to do land nav today, but under the strange weather circumstances...” he paused briefly, “we’re gonna do it anyway,” he chuckled heartily. Maria groaned from the back of the formation. CPT Bruno heard her, but chose to ignore her. She was always complaining. Every unit’s got one, he thought wryly.

The commander wasn’t finished though. “One more thing. There’s a lot of paperwork to do. We’re really backed up in there. I’m not blaming anyone. I realize that with the deployment going on we have a lot more to do, but we are soldiers first. We have to train and because we’re finance and not infantry, we only get one day a week to do it. But we must also stay on top of our work load. So, I have decided to leave one soldier behind to take care of the extra work.”

Maria stood at parade rest with her fingers crossed behind her back. “SPC Parker will do the honors.” Maria sighed dejectedly and Liz kept her head up, nodding at her commander that she would get the job done. He knew he could count on her.

The soldiers loaded up onto the humvees and took off, leaving Liz behind with a stack of paperwork. She had been working most of the day when the back door swung open and CSM Evans came running into the office frantically looking around. Liz immediately stood at parade rest with her hands behind her back to show proper respect.

“SPC Parker!”

“Yes, Sergeant Major?”

“Is CPT Bruno here?” She asked in a rush.

“Negative, Sergeant Major. He’s out training with everyone else.”

“You’re the only one here?”

“Yes, Sergeant Major.”

“Do you have a car?”

“Yes, Sergeant Major.” Liz held her stance.

“I need you to take me to the hospital right away! My husband’s been in an accident!”

“Of course, Sergeant Major.”

Liz and CSM Evans rushed to the hospital as quickly as Liz could get them there considering the road conditions. While they were on their way, the distraught woman keep talking about her husband and how she wished he was okay. Diane Evans took her cell phone out of her pocket and made a phone call. Then she told Liz that her son should be there by the time they got to the hospital. Then she went on to ramble about her 16 year old son. She told Liz that he had been pulling away lately. She felt like he hated her. He was extremely bitter about being an army brat and having to move so often. Diane had even caught him sneaking in his window last weekend. She was at the end of her rope with him. He was lonely and she wished she could just be there for him, but alas, duty always calls.

Liz finally made it to the hospital feeling awful for this woman. Her husband was in a bad way, and her only son was constantly disobedient. Liz wished she could help, but there was really nothing she could do.

She followed CSM Evans through the halls and up the elevators to the emergency waiting room. There was a young dark haired boy already sitting in a chair. His back was to Liz and CSM Evans, but Liz didn’t need to see his face to know who he was. She stood behind her sergeant major shocked as all hell. “It couldn’t be,” she heard her voice whisper.

“Max!” Diane called for her son, rushing to him.

CHAPTER 6

Max stood up from his chair and spun on his heel to greet his mother. When he caught Liz’s eyes, he stood there stiff as a board like a deer caught in a couple of headlights. Uh-oh. He could see immediately that her reaction was not a good one. He had been caught. She knew he was only 16. And now he could see the tears of betrayal swimming in her eyes.

Liz took in the sight of him. The man she had grown to care so deeply for over the course of just one week. The man who she now knew was not even a man yet. Well, I take that back, she thought. I guess I’ve already made him a man.

When Diane released him, Liz automatically looked away, afraid that this woman would see right through her. Diane excused herself to go talk to the doctor and Max took this as an opportunity to try to explain himself. “Liz...” he started with his arms outstretched.

“Don’t!” Liz put her hand up, telling him to stop right where he was. The tears flowed freely now. “I can’t believe you...” she was so upset she couldn’t even get the rest of the sentence out. So many different emotions were flowing through her hot blood right now. Guilt, pain, and anger to name a few. Before he had a chance to try to explain himself further, his mother came into the waiting room. Liz turned away hastily so Diane wouldn’t see her tears. She wiped her face and took a deep breath before turning back to her command sergeant major, claiming to have something in her eye.

“Max, give me the keys to the jeep.” Max pulled them from his pocket and handed them to her.

“How is he?” Max wanted to know.

Diane turned to him with a shaky smile. “He’s in critical condition right now. He’ll be going for surgery in about an hour. He broke his collarbone and he’s got some internal bleeding. I’m going to stay with him. Don’t worry, honey, I’m sure he’ll be fine.” Diane turned to Liz. “Would you mind taking him home for me, SPC Parker?” She asked sweetly.

Before Liz had a chance to answer, Max exclaimed, “Are you crazy?! I’m staying here with you!”

“No, Max. I need you to go home and get some rest. I’ll need you here early tomorrow morning for when your father wakes up. I know he’ll want to see you.”

“Mom!” Max protested.

“Max, listen to me!” She whispered vehemently. “You are obviously very upset right now and I don’t need anything in this place getting broken. Go home and calm down and then you can come back. I will not deal with your uncontrollable temper right now.”

Max knew she was right. He had been going to therapy for almost two years now. His temper did get out of control sometimes and anger management coupled with medication for anxiety had only helped to curb it a little. He sighed in acceptance.

Liz, still nearby, didn’t want to take Max home. In fact, she wanted to be as far away from him as she could get. But she knew damn well she couldn’t tell his mother that. And what was that about him having a temper? He’d never been anything but gentle with her. She couldn’t believe that he could get so angry as to hurt someone.

Liz shook her head. She didn’t need to be thinking about how great he was when he had blatantly lied to her. She felt used and cheated. She saw Diane turn back to her in silent question and nodded. “Yes, sergeant major. I’ll drive him home.” Diane smiled and ushered Max to leave with Liz.

Once Max and Liz were in the car, Max tried again to talk to her, but she just continued to stare out through the windshield until they had pulled up in front of his house on the base. “Liz, I know you’re angry with me, and I know I screwed up, but I just couldn’t tell you the truth. I’m sorry.”

“You’re sorry, Max? You lied to me!” Liz was still feeling hurt.

“I never lied to you. I said I was almost 19.”

“You deliberately led me to believe you were 18, and don’t try to deny it! How did you get into the club?” She couldn’t help but be curious.

“Fake I.D.” he mumbled.

“And Kyle?” Now she was terrified that Maria had also been sucked in.

“He goes to school with me.”

“Oh my God, DeLuca.”

Max smiled slightly despite the situation. “Nothing happened. They passed out right after we left the room.” Max briefly remembered the conversation he had with Kyle when they left the barracks that morning. At first, Kyle had bragged about being with Maria, but then when Max told him that he wasn’t buying it, he had reluctantly admitted what really happened. Max told him that he and Liz had also passed out, not wanting Kyle to know about the loss of his virginity. He wanted that moment to remain private for now. Liz let out a relieved breath. Then her face hardened again.

“It doesn’t matter anyway,” Liz said softly. “Whatever it was that we had was nothing before, and now, under the circumstances, never will be anything.”

Max was blown away. “No! Liz, you can’t do this! Liz...I think I’m in love with you.” He said with tears in his own eyes now.

Liz’s anger suddenly exploded inside her. “Love?! You don’t know what love is, you’re a child!”

Don’t call me a child!” Max was getting angry now, too, and Liz was finally understanding what his mother had meant. His outburst had made her jump. Yet, she wasn’t afraid of him. Deep down, she knew he would never hurt her. He softened his voice when he realized he had frightened her. “Besides, you didn’t seem to think I was so childish when you were taking my virginity. And I’ve got the scratches on my back to prove it.”

“Yeah, and no wonder! 18 year old virgin, my ass!” Liz said, pissed off that she had fallen for it. Liz didn’t want to deal with him any longer. She put her head down and whispered, “Get out.”

“Liz...”

“Get out,” she said slowly and filled with anger.

“This isn’t fair!” Max whined.

“This is how you convince me that you’re an adult?” she mocked him. She wanted him away from her and she knew that if she treated him this way he would get angry and leave. It worked. He took one look at her down turned face and opened the car door, setting one foot on the ground.

Max was about to storm into the house when he caught on to her game. That’s what she wanted him to do. He turned back to her and said with conviction, “This isn’t over, Liz Parker.” He leaned over and kissed her desperately before she was able to turn away. He got out of the car and went inside, watching as she drove away from him.

He made a vow to himself then and there, that he wasn’t giving her up without a fight. He was going to make sure that she would eventually see him the way he saw her, and she would love him as much as he loved her. Soon enough, he thought.

***************

Liz dug beneath the back of the passenger seat searching for the cd case. She found it and flipped through to find something for her mood. That kiss had left her breathless and it pissed her off that she could be so affected by him, knowing they couldn’t be together. She popped the cd in the player and sped down the road.

It’s just one of those days,
When you don't want to wake up.
Everything is fucked,
Everybody sucks.
You don't really know why,
But you wanna justify,
Rippin someone's head off.
No human contact,
and if you interact,
your life is on contract.
Your best bet is to stay away motherfucker,
It's just one of those days

Max slammed his bedroom door shut and hit PLAY on the cd player. He picked up a textbook from his bed and threw it across the room, where it slammed into the wall and landed with a boom on the floor.

It's all about the he-says, she-says bullshit,
I think you better quit, lettin shit slip
Or you’ll be leaving with a fat lip.
It's all about the he-says, she-says bullshit,
I think you better quit, talking that shit.

Liz pushed down on the pedal, swerving to the left to go around a car in front of her. The speedometer read 83 mph and she pushed down a little more.

It’s just one of those days
Feeling like a freight train.
First one to complain,
Leaves with a bloodstain.
Damn right I'm a maniac,
You better watch your back,Cause I'm fucking up your program.
And then your stuck up,
You just lucked up,
Next in line to get fucked up.
Your best bet is to stay away motherfucker,
It's just one of those days

It's all about the he-says, she-says bullshit,
I think you better quit, lettin shit slip
Or you’ll be leaving with a fat lip.
It's all about the he-says, she-says bullshit,
I think you better quit, talking that shit, punk
So come and get it.

Max fell back onto his bed and closed his eyes tightly, trying to calm his angry breathing. He had no right to be angry, but he was so upset that it was making him angry, and his mother was right. It was probably a good thing he hadn’t stayed at the hospital or he would’ve wound up hitting a doctor or a nurse.

I feel like shit,
My suggestion..is to keep your distance.
Cause right now I’m dangerous.
We've all felt like shit,
And been treated like shit.
All those motherfuckers,
That wanna step up,
I hope you know, I pack a chainsaw.
I'll skin your ass raw,
And if my day keeps going this way, I just might
Break something tonight

I pack a chainsaw.
I'll skin your ass raw,
And if my day keeps going this way, I just might
Break something tonight

I pack a chainsaw.
I'll skin your ass raw,
And if my day keeps going this way, I just might
Break your fucking face tonight!

Liz finally pulled to stop in the parking lot of the office. Her unit had yet to arrive back and her head fell forward onto the steering wheel. The tears ran down her face in a less than silent stream. Her anger and her pain was all coming out, her cries the only sound above the hum of the engine.

Give me something to break. (x2)
Just give me something to break.
How bout your fucking face.

I hope you know, I pack a chainsaw.
WHAT!
A chainsaw.
WHAT!
A motherfucking chainsaw.
WHAT!

So come and get it.

Max laid on his bed, tears pooling in the corners of his eyes. He angrily wiped them away. He wasn’t supposed to be crying over some girl. Yeah right, he thought to himself. If she were just some girl it wouldn’t be this painful.

It's all about the he-says, she-says bullshit,
I think you better quit, lettin shit slip
Or you’ll be leaving with a fat lip.
It's all about the he-says, she-says bullshit,
I think you better quit, talking that shit.
Ohh, so come and get it.

Limp Bizkit - Break Stuff

Liz saw the humvee pull up and knew she’d be questioned as to why she was in her car instead of inside working. She swiped at her face, trying to rid herself of any indication that she’d been crying. She put her cover on her head and got out of the car, checking the mirror. Just as expected, CPT Bruno came upon her and she stood at attention.

“SPC Parker, where are you coming from?”

“CSM Evans needed a ride to the hospital, sir. Her husband was in a car accident.”

“Oh my goodness, is he alright?” He asked concerned for his friend.

“He’s in surgery, sir.”

The commander nodded. “Alright, well why don’t you go on home and I’ll see you at PT on Monday.”

“Yes, sir.” Liz turned on her heel and got back in her car. She was grateful that she didn’t have to see Maria yet. She didn’t really feel like talking about Max right now.

When she got back to the barracks she fell down on her bed, trying to stop the tears that were once again coming. She had thought she was all cried out, but apparently, that wasn’t the case. She fell into a fitful sleep soon afterward.

AN: Wow!! If I had known that this issue would cause such craziness, I might not have posted it. But then, what fun would that be? So, without further ado, on with the show!

CHAPTER 7

Liz was startled awake by a knock at the door. “Who is it?” she called.

“It’s me, Parker!” Maria yelled from the other side.

“Come in!” Maria walked in the dark room. It was now a little after 6 pm and the sun had gone down. Liz reached over and hit the switch to turn on the light.

“Hey, girl.” Maria sat on the bed next to Liz and could now see her puffy eyes. “Oh my gosh, what’s the matter?” she asked sympathetically.

Liz sniffled, “I need to tell you something, DeLuca.”

“Ok, what’s up?”

“Today I found out that Max isn’t 18 like he had said,” she said softly waiting for Maria’s reaction. When she realized that Maria was waiting for her to continue, Liz said, “He’s 16.”

“Holy shit! I can’t believe he lied to you! Wait a minute...” A light bulb suddenly went off in Maria’s head and Liz waited for the explosion. “That means Kyle...That little bastard!! I wish I knew where he lived. Thank god we passed out after only a little kissing!” Maria was heated. “If I see him again, I am so kicking his little ass.” She stopped talking as Liz watched a look of understanding cross her face. “Parker...you didn’t....did you?”

The look of guilt that crossed her face was enough for Maria to know what had gone on between them. Fresh tears began to pool in Liz’s eyes. “I really liked him. All week, all I could think about was that he had to have been the one. And now this.”

Maria tried to reason with Liz momentarily. “Ya know, Liz...they say age ain’t nothin but a number. If you really think he’s the one...”

Liz cut her off, “Yeah, maybe if the only problem was his age.” Maria looked confused. “He’s CSM Evans’ son.” Maria’s eyes went wide and she paled. Liz nodded at Maria’s understanding of the situation.

“Parker...you know you can’t...” Maria started.

“I know. I know.” Liz said nodding her head. They sat in silence for a couple of minutes, Maria’s calming hand rubbing Liz’s back.

“Hey, Parker, come on. How about some pizza? I ordered in.” A slight smile crossed Liz’s face as she got up to follow Maria into the kitchenette.

**************

After getting full with pizza and cokes, Liz and Maria sat in Liz’s room watching television. Nothing was on so Maria asked, “How about we go out tonight?”

“No! I don’t need the same thing happening twice.”

“Come on, Liz, what are the odds of that happening again? We just have to card anybody that talks to us.” Maria joked with her.

Liz smiled slightly. “Thanks, Maria, but...I’m really not in the mood.” Liz said sadly.

“Well, alright. I’ll call Whitman and go out with him. You gonna be okay by yourself?” Maria asked out of concern.

“Yeah, I’ll be fine. I’ll probably just catch up on some soap network and then get some sleep.”

Maria smiled and left. A few hours later, she heard the door shut and she started flipping through the channels when her cell rang. Without looking away from the tv, she grabbed her phone and flipped it open. “Hello?”

“Liz?” She snapped the phone shut quickly. I told him I didn’t want to talk to him, she thought. She stared at the phone for a few seconds, and just as she had figured, it rang again. This time she checked the caller i.d. Max, it read. So she ignored it. The phone continued to ring again and again. She wanted to turn it off, but she couldn’t. Her unit could call at anytime and they needed to be able to get in touch with her. So she just let it ring, checking the caller i.d. each time to make sure it was just Max. She sighed inwardly. He wasn’t going to win.

*************

Across town, Max stood around with his phone held to his ear, pacing his bedroom. She had hung up on him. And now she wasn’t answering because she knew it was him. He tried to call her again by blocking his number. It didn’t work. She knew it was him. When her voicemail picked up after his 9th or so call, he decided to leave a message this time.

“Liz, I’m so sorry. I just...I don’t even know what to say. I just want to talk to you for just a minute. I just want to hear your voice. I miss you so much and I realize that you have every right to want to stay away from me, but you know damn well that if it weren’t for who my mother is, you wouldn’t even need to consider this. I love you. Bye.” He hung up.

He was getting angry. He popped an anxiety pill and willed himself to calm down. He needed to get out of this house, he was going stir-crazy. He decided to go to the gym. He could beat some of his anger into a punching bag. He grabbed his already-packed duffel bag. He went to the gym quite a bit so he always had a packed duffel. He thought about his week with Liz. He had been so happy. He hadn’t even needed his pills. He had finally found the cure for his sanity, and now he was going insane again wanting her back. He left the house, locking the door behind him, and running through the streets, trying to get to the gym.

In the gym he pounded the punching bag like a piece of meat. Left hook, right hook, upper cut...on and on until he was gasping for breath, too tired to continue. He fell to the floor in a heap in front of the punching bag, breathing hard. Once he had caught his breath, he went to the locker room for a quick shower.

Under the spray of the cool water, he laid his head forward onto the wall, closing his eyes and picturing her beautiful face. It had a calming effect on him and a smile touched his lips. He also wondered how his father was doing, and if he was going to be alright. He really truly loved his parents, and he was very proud of his mother and her service to the armed forces. When he was a little boy, he remembered wanting to be a soldier, too. He would dress up in his mom’s uniforms and play soldier in the backyard.

But as he got older, he started to realize that he wasn’t really like other kids. He was always moving. He could never get close to anyone because he would leave shortly after arriving. He kept to himself most of the time and closed off from other students. He found himself upset over having to move so often and never settle in one place. The schools were all different, but the kids were always the same. They would talk behind his back, say that he was weird, and make fun of his father because he was a stay at home dad.

Max started getting into fights in his pre-teens, and his mother finally took him to a psychologist at the age of 14, trying to find out why her son was so unhappy. The psychologist claimed that it was normal for army brats to feel alienated and that they would work with him to fix his problems. Diane decided to put Max in schools on post, hoping that he would finally be with kids who understood what it was like to be in his situation, but Max was so used to being closed off, that he still wasn’t able to make many friends.

Liz made him feel alive. Liz made him feel special. She made him feel wanted and loved, something he hadn’t felt in a long time. With Diane always on the move, either on temporary duty in another place for a few days, or at the office until late at night. All he had was his father, and even that wasn’t much. Phillip was a member of the FRG (Family Readiness Group), so he was always doing bake sales and stupid things like that to raise money. All of his father’s friends were female, and Max felt like he had two mothers sometimes.

He left the gym and headed home to get some sleep. His workout had left him tired and he just wanted to go to bed.

****************

It was a normal Thursday afternoon. The office was still open and Liz was at the counter, dealing with soldiers. Liz looked up to check the clock. Good, she thought, we close in half an hour. Liz turned back to look over her soldier and saw Michael sitting in a chair at his desk, talking to Maria. Maria ruffled Michael’s hair and asked, “What the hell is the shit that you put in here?”

Michael laughed and said, “One of the world’s greatest mysteries.”

To just anyone, it would have looked like playful banter among friends. But Liz could see and hear the flirting going on between the lines.

“Excuse me, Specialist?”

Liz turned back around to the counter to acknowledge the customer. It was a young private. “Yes, Private?” Liz teased him with a smile. She liked it when they called her Specialist. It gave her a sense of importance.

The young private smiled at her and held out a packet. “I’m here to get my bonus put in.”

“Okay,” Liz smiled at him and took the paperwork from his hands, looking over each document to make sure it was all there. Everything seemed to be in order. She nodded and looked back at him.

“Alright, everything’s here so, I’m going to put it in the system and you should receive $7000 in around 6 weeks.” The soldier looked a little unpleased with that so Liz continued, “Don’t worry, it normally doesn’t take that long, but if you don’t have it in at least 6 weeks come back and we’ll find out what’s going on. After that, the rest of your $10,000 will be paid out once a year around the anniversary of your enlistment. It’s just something they do in case you get out of the Army early for whatever reason, okay?”

The soldier smiled and nodded before leaving the office. Liz took the paperwork to the back room to put it in a bin for Maria to get to it, because Maria’s job was primarily bonuses. Liz primarily worked the counter. CPT Bruno told her that she had good people skills.

When Liz got back to the counter, CSM Evans was standing there. Liz stood in front of her at parade rest. “Hey, Sergeant Major. CPT Bruno’s in his office if you want me to go get him?”

“At ease, soldier,” she told Liz. Liz put her hands at her sides. “No, I was actually looking for you.” Liz got extremely nervous. Did she know about her and Max? No, Max wouldn’t have told her. She didn’t have to worry long. "I just wanted to thank you for that ride to the hospital.”

“Oh, it was no problem, Sergeant Major.”

“Well, in return for your kindness, I would like to invite you to dinner tonight. I know that you’re in this state alone, with no family. Besides, Max is driving me crazy with his moods lately, and I’m sure he could use the company of someone more his age.”

Liz chuckled nervously. Yeah, more his age, she thought.

“So how about it? We’re having lasagne,” Diane tempted her.

Liz couldn’t very well say no. “Sure, Sergeant Major. That sounds like a lot of fun.” Liz told her with false merriment. As soon as Diane had left, Liz mumbled to herself, “Dear Lord, Liz, what have you gotten yourself into this time?”

CHAPTER 8

Liz arrived for dinner at around 5 pm. She figured it would be the perfect time to eat, and she wouldn’t have to talk to Max much. She also felt good about the fact that she had been in the shower while Maria was leaving to go “out.” Maria didn’t normally use any other word, so that was good enough for Liz. She didn’t have to explain to her roommate where she was headed.

She thought about what she would say to CSM Evans. She really didn’t have anything in common with the woman. They were both in the Army, but essentially, they were in two different worlds. Liz told herself that she would just speak when she was spoken to. A good time to exercise that military bearing she had been taught so well in Basic Training.

She dressed casually, a pair of form-fitting flared jeans and a loose t-shirt. She had put a couple of gold hoops in her ears and light eyeliner to show a little face. She wore her hair in a high ponytail and a black leather jacket with her black high sketchers to complement the outfit. She rang the doorbell and took a deep breath. She could hear a little scuffling and what sounded like a yell behind the door. She didn’t have time to think about it, though.

The door opened to reveal none other than Max, looking more than confused as to why she was here. “Liz, what are you doing here?” he asked hopefully.

“Your mother invited me for dinner,” Liz spoke softly. “But, if I’m interrupting something, I can come back ...later...”

She was cut off by Diane coming to the door with a wide smile and pushing past Max to open the door wider to let Liz in. Liz noticed that Max started to clench his jaw while he looked at the ground. Diane began ushering Liz inside. “Come on in, SPC Parker, thank you for coming.”

“Thank you for having me, Sergeant Major.”

“Oh, it was my pleasure dear.” She took Liz into the dining room and had her sit down. Liz asked to help, but Diane told her to leave it up her to her and Max.

Liz watched the two try to avoid each other as best the could in such a confined space. Diane looked as if she was basically “faking the funk”, as far as what we soldiers like to call it when you’re really not in the mood but you do a little happy dance anyway. Max just kept his eyes down, his jaw clenching and unclenching over time. Whenever he would glance in Liz’s direction, he would put on a nearly-there half-smile, and then turn back to setting the table.

Once they were all seated with lasagne and Italian bread in front of them, they all held hands and prayed for Phillip. Holding Max’s hand was violently electrifying for Liz. She could feel him squeeze her hand lightly and rub his thumb over her fingers. She couldn’t wait for the prayer to be over. And she could tell he had felt it too because he winked at her.

Then, they all dug in. They quickly noticed that they had different eating habits. Liz sat in her chair with her head down, eyes on the food, and basically just shoveled it into her mouth. She continued this for a couple of minutes before she felt eyes on her. She slowly raised her eyes up to see Max and Diane looking at her like she was nuts. Liz shrugged her shoulders at the two, “What?” she asked quietly.

Diane and Max burst out laughing. Diane was the first to speak after their laughter subsided. “That damn military bearing!” And that erupted them into another fit of laughter, to which, Liz could not help but snicker a little bit herself.

Diane decided to get to know her soldier a little better. “So, Parker...where are you from?” Liz looked up from her plate to address her.

“Um, New Mexico, actually.”

“Where abouts in New Mexico?”

“Roswell, Sergeant Major.”

“Oh don’t worry about the Sergeant Major part here.” She waved her hand to dismiss the issue. Liz nodded her agreement. “Roswell, huh? Ever meet an alien?” Diane asked in humor.

“No, not yet,” Liz laughed.

“Did you like school? Were you a good student?”

“Umm...yeah, I guess. I got decent grades.”

“What was your favorite subject? Most soldiers will tell me gym or lunch,” Diane laughed.

Liz laughed with her, and she couldn’t help but notice that Max was hanging on her every word. She felt a little uncomfortable under his scrutiny, but held her head high and turned back to Diane. “Actually, science. I love knowing that there’s an answer to everything out there.”

Max spoke up then. “What about things that don’t make any sense? What about things that just happen?” His words held a double meaning and Liz was not blind to it.

She spoke with conviction. “Nothing happens for no reason.” She held his eyes, telling him to drop it silently.

Diane didn’t seem to notice the looks they gave one another and continued. “Maybe you could teach Max a thing or two. Science is his worst subject.”

“Mom!” Max was a little embarrassed. He didn’t want to look inferior in front of Liz and treated like a little kid.

His mother looked at him unable to understand why he was so defensive. “Well, it’s true, Max. You know that if you just applied yourself a little more you wouldn’t be failing that class.”

“It’s not my fault. Mrs. Connelly is a total bit...” He caught the look in his mother’s eyes and changed his wording. “A total bitter woman. She hates me.”

“You can’t continue to use that excuse, Max.” Diane said with a motherly tone.

“Can we drop it, please?” Max was getting aggravated and he didn’t want to blow up here in front of Liz. He didn’t want her to see that side of him. Diane nodded and turned back to Liz.

“So, why did you join the Army, soldier?”

A smile lit Liz’s face. “Well, actually, the college money lured me to it at first, but then the way of life is just amazing.” Max and Diane had skeptical looks on their faces. Liz laughed and explained, “No, I mean, like...it’s a way of life, and even though it’s hard sometimes, it’s not so hard other times. And, you learn to appreciate the men and women before you and the men and women that will come after you. I love it. It makes me feel good about myself, and I like the order and the system that goes along with everything.”

“Born to be a soldier! That’s what I like to hear. What do you think of that Max? Maybe Parker here could teach you a few things about army life, so you won’t be so bitter about it all the time.”

Liz put her head down. She could tell from Max’s mannerisms that his mother was getting on his nerves and if Liz didn’t know any better, she’d think that Diane was doing it without knowing how her son would react. But that was ridiculous. There was no way Liz knew Max better than his own mother did.

“Mom,” Max demanded. “I don’t want to talk about this right now, okay?”

“But Max, don’t you remember being a little boy and wanting to be a soldier so badly. You loved it. And I still think you would love it. You still have a couple years to decide, but I know it’s the right thing for you.”

“Mom, I said I don’t wanna talk about it! Just let it go, already!” Max burst out. He shook his head slowly at his mother to back off, but it didn’t help.

“Max, if you would just...”

“I said STOP!!” He stood quickly from his chair and left the table, stomping upstairs to his room.

Liz sat silently, eating her food. Diane rested her weary head in one hand and started to shake slightly. Liz could tell that she was crying. When Diane lifted her head to acknowledge Liz, she had tears staining her cheeks. “I’m so sorry, Parker. I just don’t know what to do with him anymore.” Just then a loud bang came from upstairs. “Don’t worry, honey, it’s just Max. He’s either thrown something across the room or kicked a hole into a wall.” Diane spoke full of somber. She sighed loudly and Liz listened quietly. “I’m at the end of my rope with him. He’s in therapy, he’s on medication, but nothing seems to ease him. I hate seeing my son in pain. I just thought that him coming into the army would be good for him. Give him some balance and order. In fact, the last time I saw him in a good mood was just a couple weeks ago. He wasn’t fighting with us. He wasn’t throwing things, and I didn’t even catch him taking his medication. He was a different person entirely. He was my son again. And I wish I knew what it was that had him so happy because I would give it back to him in an instant.”

Liz didn’t know what to think. Was the reason Max had been so happy that week her doing? Did she make Max as happy as he had made her? Yeah, okay, so they were both happy for a week, so what? She couldn’t be his happy drug. If he really had problems, he would need way more than her to get over them. That was the logic part of her brain. The illogical part told her that her love could cure him. She knew it was stupid to believe that. But she couldn’t help what her heart felt.

Liz and Diane ate in silence for a few minutes when Liz asked carefully, “How’s Mr. Evans doing?”

Diane’s face lit up at her sympathy. “He’s doing much better, Parker. They’ve got him on medications and the surgeries went really well. Doctors say he’ll be out in a matter of weeks.”

Liz genuinely smiled for her, “That’s good to hear. I’m glad he’s recovering. And you can tell him that he’s in my prayers.”

“Thank you,” Diane said genuinely and squeezed Liz’s hand across the table.

The pair continued dinner in a not-so awkward silence until Liz felt it was time for her to go.

“Alright, hang on a second,” Diane stopped her at the door.

“MAX!!” she called up to his room. She called again when his voice drifted down, “What?!”

“Our company is leaving and I would like you to say goodbye, please?!” His footsteps could be heard drudging down the steps. He came down in a pair of sweats, bare from the waist up, and the ankles down.

Liz swallowed back a moan. He was so gorgeous. When Max caught her looking at him, he smirked, knowing full well that she was having the same effect on him. He reached out his hand for Liz to take, which she did. “Bye, Liz. Please come again.” He stared directly into her burning eyes, that smirk still on his face. Liz shook her head and her hand free of his grasp, and said goodnight to the both of them, taking one last look at Max before leaving their property.

She drove back to the barracks remembering the look in Max’s eyes when he told her goodbye, and the way he had told her to please come again. He wasn’t going to give up. She knew it, and the strangest thing was...a part of her didn’t want him to.

CHAPTER 9

For the next two weeks, Max would not let up, and Liz was getting tired of ignoring him. He sent white and red roses every single day. He sent boxes of chocolates. He sent letters. She was getting dozens of emails where he would tell her how much he missed her and just wanted another chance. He called her cell constantly and left more cute messages. She couldn’t take much more.

He even sent her a DVD once and when she had popped it in the player, she noticed that it was him in what she assumed was his bedroom. He wore a gray wife beater and a pair of baggy blue jeans. He was so gorgeous, she thought. She couldn’t remember her 16 year old boyfriend being that hot. He was on his knees in front of the camera. Just as she was about to turn off the tv, not really wanting to know what he had to say, music started playing in the background and he started singing. At that point, she couldn’t turn away from him.

You’re there by my side
In every way
I know that you will not forsake me

I give you my life
I would not think twice
Your love is all I need, believe me

I may not say it quite as much as I should
But when I say I love you, darling
That means for good
So open up your heart and let me in

And I will love you
Until forever
Until death do us part we’ll be together

So take my hand
And hold on tight
And we’ll get there
This I swear

Liz felt the tears spring to her eyes as he held his hand out to the camera.

I’m wondering how
I ever got by
Without you in my life to guide me

Where ever I go
The one thing that’s true
Is anything I do, I do for you

I may not say it half as much as I should
But when I say I love you, darling
That means for good
So open up your heart and let me in

And I will love you
Until forever
Until death do us part we’ll be together

So take my hand
And hold on tight
And we’ll get there
This I swear

So when ever you get weary
Just reach out for me
I’ll never let you down
My love

And I will love you
Until forever
Until death do us part we’ll be together

So take my hand
And hold on tight
And we’ll get there

And I will love you
Until forever
Until death do us part we’ll be together

So take my hand
And hold on tight
And we’ll get there (we’ll get there)
This I swear
Nick Lachey - This I Swear

Once he stopped singing, he chuckled a little and said, “I know the whole song isn’t exactly right for us, but the main points are there. Please, open up your heart and let me in.”

The video faded to black and Liz fell onto her floor, crying. Why did he have to be this difficult? Why did she have to feel so much for him?

********************

It was Saturday night, and Liz was working on some online correspondence courses in order to get some extra points for promotion. The board was on Monday, and she had been studying for the past week. She was sure she was going to pass. Maria had been partying every night that week, sometimes with Whitman, sometimes with SGT Guerin. Maria kept telling Liz that she was wearing him down, but Liz knew better. Michael had worked hard for that promotion and there was no way he was going to lose his rank over just anyone. Liz wasn’t sure what Michael felt for Maria, but she knew he cared for her. Maybe if and when Maria got promoted, things would be different for them.

A knock on her window interrupted her typing. She turned her head toward the window and saw him standing there on the other side. She sighed and walked over to the window. She opened it up. “What are you doing here, Max? Ya know...”

“Wait! Before you say anything else. Yes, I lied to you! And it was wrong and I know that. But can you honestly tell me that if you had known how old I was you would’ve given me a chance?”

“Max...your age isn’t even the real issue. I probably wouldn’t have given you a chance had I known how old you were, but that’s not even the real point. Your mother is my sergeant major. And even if being with you wasn’t illegal, you would still be off limits because of who your mother is.”

“Liz...first of all, who cares who my mother is? Romeo and Juliet had feuding families, too. And as far as this being illegal...it isn’t.”

“What?” Liz asked shocked.

Max smiled at her expression. “In the state of Colorado, the only way this relationship would be illegal is if I was under 15 and you were at least 10 years older than me.” Liz stood there, unable to express what that meant to her. Legally, they could be together. But it was still immoral. She shook her head at him.

“Max, you don’t understand...”

“Look, I did my homework. I told you this wasn’t over. Don’t you see...you’re my other half. I know that you’re probably a little worried about my personal issues, but I swear to you, I would never hurt you. When we were together for that week, nothing brought me down. Nothing made me happier. I had no problems with my anger or my anxiety. You keep me sane, Liz. That’s how I know you’re the one. No one’s ever been able to do that for me. I know what love is, because it makes me a better man. And if that isn’t love, then I don’t know what is. I love you.” He spoke fast so she couldn’t stop him and his sincere words brought tears to her eyes.

She put a hand to her heart, afraid it was going to explode with how swelled it had just become at his admission. She couldn’t stop herself after that if she had tried. She reached through the window for his collar and pulled him to her, kissing him like a starved woman. She helped pull him in through the window and kissed him hard, throwing him down onto the bed and eagerly climbing on top of him.

Max gasped out, “Yes, I missed you so much.” He put his hands on either side of her face, trying to gentle the rough kisses. But Liz wasn’t looking for gentle. She wanted him fast...and hard...and NOW. Everything he had just said combined with all the gifts had left her knees weak and her heart unable to be denied any longer. She knew this was wrong, but she couldn’t seem to stop. She wanted him in the worst way possible and damn all the rest of it. She didn’t care about the consequences or anything else but being with him.

Max was in heaven. He had finally made her understand. He just wanted to be with her and he knew that there could be consequences, but he would be there with her. He knew that jail wasn’t an option so what was the worst that could happen? Besides, if he had anything to do with it, his mother would never find out. He made a promise to himself to keep Liz safe through all of this. He wouldn’t allow her to be hurt by this.

The next thing they knew, they were naked and Max was thrusting inside Liz like there was no tomorrow. She encouraged him by moaning out his name and telling him not to stop. She needed him like she needed her next breath, and he couldn’t have stopped if he had wanted to. He had her back, and he refused to let her go again.

He pumped inside her over and over again, whispering her name into her ear, unable to express in words what this moment meant to him. He didn’t want this to end. Not yet. Not until he was sure it wasn’t just another very vivid dream of being with her. When he felt her clamp around him, he let go, jerking his lower body uncontrollably, emptying himself inside her.

He fell on top of her and placed butterfly kisses all over her face, everywhere he could reach, whispering how much he loved her again and again. Her arms wrapped around his neck, kissing him back, holding him close to make sure he didn’t go anywhere. When he looked down into her eyes he saw the tears stream down her face silently.

“Liz, baby, don’t cry. We’ll be okay. I promise you, I won’t let anything happen to us.”

“Oh, Max. This is so wrong. We really shouldn’t have done that.” His heart dropped when he heard her words. “But I couldn’t help myself. Nobody can ever know about this, you do realize that, don’t you?” She told him.

He nodded slowly. “Don’t worry. Nobody will ever know.” He laid his head on her chest, feeling her fingers weave through his damp hair, letting his breathing slow and closing his eyes to breathe her in.

His last words rang in both their ears. Nobody will ever know.

AN: Sorry about the delay AGAIN. School is a pain! Here ya go!

CHAPTER 10

As Max and Liz laid in her bed in the aftermath of their lovemaking, they both had some time to think things over. Liz wanted to talk to Max about his parents.

“Max...that night I came over for dinner...”

“Yeah?”

“What were you and your mom fighting about before I got there?”

Max sighed, figuring he might as well tell her. “She was bitching about my grades again. I get distracted sometimes and I just don’t feel like it, ya know. She’s right...about if I applied myself I’d be a better student. But I can’t stand my science teacher. She’s such a bitch. She treats me like I’m an idiot because of my anger. She talks all slow to me and gives me these condescending looks. I hate her.”

“What about your parents? Do you think they treat you differently?” Liz asked cautiously.

“I know they do. Half the time they treat me like there’s nothing wrong with me, constantly goading me about what I’m gonna do with my life. They always bring up the army. And then the other half of the time, they walk around me on eggshells, like if they say the wrong thing I’m gonna pull a gun out of my back pocket and start shooting.”

Liz was sorry for him, but she didn’t want him to know that. He didn’t need anyone feeling sorry for him. He needs someone to treat him like an adult and understand where he’s coming from. Max continued while looking into her eyes.

“I’m not a bad guy, Liz. I’m really not. I have some problems, yeah, but I’m dealing with them. I take my meds and I go to therapy just like I’m supposed to. I just wish they would stop riding me about my future. They act like I’ve gotta figure it out tomorrow. And my mother doesn’t help. You saw her at dinner. She doesn’t know me at all.”

“Well, Max,” Liz started, not wanting to upset him, but wanting him to understand at the same time. “Your mother has a very important job to do. And she does it well. I guess I can understand that it can get lonely with her gone so much, but she’s gotta put food on the table. She does it for you, you know that, right?”

“I know. I understand that. But I don’t see why she doesn’t try to get to know me when she is here. It wouldn’t take up too much of her time, I don’t think.”

Liz cuddled closer to him, lending her strength for a moment. “What about your dad? He’s with you more often isn’t he?”

“Yeah,” Max said bitterly. “But he’s too busy with the FRG and taking care of other people’s problems instead of ours. He’s so big on being a joiner that he doesn’t stop to think about me half the time.”

Liz leaned up his body, staring into his eyes, watching him go to another place for a minute before coming back to her and smiling at her. Liz leaned up a little more to kiss his lips. Max broke away to admire her beauty. “What?” Liz smiled at him.

“You make me feel like a man.”

“Huh?” She didn’t get it.

“You make me feel like an adult. Even when you’re comforting me...you make me feel like a man.” He smiled in awe at this creature before him and she smiled right back.

“Well...in this bed...there doesn’t seem to be a single thing childish about you.” Liz purred.

“Yeah?” Max teased flipping their positions so that he was on top. “So then tell me something.”

“What?”

“Being the more experienced woman that you are,” he watched Liz nod shyly, “got any tips for me? Anything you’d like me to do differently?” He wiggled his eyebrows at her.

“Yeah,” Liz whispered, wrapping her arms around his neck, and watching him raise a questioning eyebrow at her. “Don’t do anyone else.” Their smiles faded as they looked into each other’s souls.

“You ain’t gotta worry bout that one, baby,” Max whispered and kissed her slowly, stroking her warm tongue with his own. Their lovemaking was slow for the first time in their relationship. They took their time getting accustomed to each other’s bodies, finding the sensitive points.

***************

A couple hours later, Max rolled over to an empty bed. He opened his eyes, scanning the room for Liz, when he saw her on the floor bent over a book. He stretched lazily and got up, coming to sit down next to her.

Without looking up from her book, Liz asked, “Don’t you need to be getting home? Isn’t Mommy going to be worried?” Liz teased him.

Max lifted the corner of his mouth. “She thinks I’m spending the night at Kyle’s. So there!” He laughed.

“Oooohhh...so that means that you knew what was going to happen tonight.” Liz accused him playfully.

“I didn’t know! I just hoped.” They smiled at each other for a moment when Max noticed what she was reading. “Army Study Guide?” he read off the front. “What are you reading that for?”

“I have a promotion board on Monday and I wanna do well.” Liz informed him.

“Well why bother with that? I’ll just find out what my mom’s gonna ask you on the board.”

“And how are you gonna do that? ‘Uh, mom, my girlfriend is going to the board on Monday and I wanted to know what your questions were so that she could cheat?’ Yeah, I could see that going over real well,” Liz mocked him.

“No, smartass! I’ll just check her question sheet tonight while she’s asleep.”

Liz thought about it for a minute before shaking her head. “No, Max, I can do this myself. Besides she’s only one board member. There’ll be four of ‘em come Monday morning. And I have got to be prepared.”

Max nodded and then said, “Well make sure you know the NCO Creed at least. She’s always bitchin’ about soldiers not knowing that. And she’ll probably ask you about that big bull across the street from your headquarters building. That’s one of her favorites to get people with.”

As Max told her all the things he knew his mother would ask, Liz took extensive notes and flipped through different pages of her notes to make sure she knew all of it. When he was done, she asked, “How do you know all this?”

Max shrugged his bare shoulders. “My mom may not listen to me much, but I always listen to her.”

Liz smiled at him gratefully and moved over to where he sat, kissing him soundly on the lips and whispering, “Thanks.”

“Anything for you,” Max told her sincerely.

*****************

Sunday morning, or rather afternoon, Max and Liz were sleeping in when Maria burst through the door unannounced.

“Are you still asleep cuz you never sleep in...” her words died on her lips when she caught sight of the man inbetween her roommates sheets. Had it been anyone else, Maria would’ve said she was sorry and backed out of the room, but seeing who was with Liz, Maria shrieked, “Oh My God!!!”

Max and Liz jumped up quickly at the intrusion. “DeLuca,” Liz started.

“What the hell...” she stopped for a moment and put her hand out in front of Max’s face and continued her rant, “is the matter with you Parker, I thought we talked about this?!”

Liz tried hastily to explain, “I know we talked about it, but could you please take your hand out of his face. I promise you, he will still be able to hear us.” Maria obliged her friend and took a long look at Max.

“I must say that he is a prime choice, however, you cannot let his...assets...cloud your better judgement here, Parker.”

Liz nodded slowly at Maria and said, “Okay. Now please get out. I’ll talk to you later.” Maria huffed loudly and mouthed Later before vacating the room.

Liz turned back to her lover. “I’m sorry about that Max.”

“Yeah, I guess somebody knows our secret.” Max chuckled.

“Yeah, I guess so,” Liz agreed.

Max leaned over Liz to check the alarm clock by her bed, noting the time. Liz kissed his chest as he leaned back to look at her with a smile on his face at her touch. “I gotta go,” he said sadly.

Liz nodded. “I know.” She kissed him hungrily, allowing her tongue to slip inside his mouth briefly, trying not to allow the kiss to get too out of control.

He swung his legs over the side of the bed and pulled his jeans on, then laced up his sneakers. Once he was dressed, he headed over to the window to leave the same way he had come in.

“When will I see you again?” Liz asked meekly.

Max stopped inside the window. “Very soon, I hope,” he smiled and leaned forward to kiss her one last time. “I’ll call you.” He slipped out the window quietly and Liz fell back on her bed with a sigh. She knew she’d have to face Maria soon, but right now she just wanted to lie on the bed, breathing in Max’s leftover essence. She was falling hard and fast, and she didn’t want to stop.

AN: I know it's really short, but I promise the rest should be longer. I didn't have much time for this. :(

CHAPTER 11

Liz paced outside the conference room on Monday morning with Michael there as her sponsor. She stood tall and proud in her Class A uniform. She wrung her hands and bit her lip nervously, very anxious to get this board over with as soon as possible. She tried to go over the material in her head, but she couldn’t stop thinking about the conversation she’d had with Maria the day before.

Liz walked into Maria’s room shortly after Max had left. “Listen, DeLuca...”

“I thought you said that you couldn’t see him anymore?”

“I know I did, but...” Liz had a hard time trying to figure out just how to defend her actions. Eventually, she replied meekly, “I couldn’t help myself.” He brought her head back slowly, expecting an eruption from Maria, but it never happened. She looked at Maria, watching the wheels turning in her roommates head, dreadful of her reaction being a bad one.

Maria just shook her head at Liz. “I don’t know what to say, Parker.” She shrugged her shoulders and left the barracks room, leaving Liz to wonder if Maria knowing was good or bad.

Maria hadn’t come back until after Liz was asleep, and their drive to and from PT that morning was silent.

Liz was pulled from her thoughts when she saw a Sergeant First Class leave the conference room and approach Michael, whispering in his ear. Michael nodded his head and looked at Liz. “You’re up, girl.”

Liz nodded quickly and pushed her hands down her uniform, smoothing any stray wrinkles. She stood to knock on the door and looked back at Michael quickly. He gave her a reassuring smile and she turned back to the door and knocked three times firmly and loudly, demonstrating her confidence and determination, just like it had said in the book. She heard someone call out from inside the room, “Enter!”

Liz confidently marched into the board room, executing a left face in order to face the president of the board, or in this case, CSM Evans. Liz snapped a salute and said, “Specialist Parker reports to the president of the board as directed.” She held her salute and watched the board members look her up and down, checking for any mistakes on her person.

“At ease, Specialist,” CSM Evans smiled at her. Liz dropped her salute and waited a moment before Diane finally asked her to sit. Liz sat down at the position of attention, her back straight and her hands on her thighs. “Good morning, SPC Parker,” Diane continued. “Why don’t you tell us a little bit about yourself?”

Liz quickly pulled the short autobiography she had written from her mind and proceeded to tell the board members basically everything she had said to Diane at dinner a few nights ago. The first board member asked Liz her first question. “What is hypothermia?”

“SGT, hypothermia is when the body loses heat faster than it can produce it,” Liz said confidently. And on the board went. Once they had gotten to the president of the board, Liz was more confident than ever. She was sure she was doing great.

Diane took a good long look at Liz and asked Liz the history of the bull in front of the headquarters building. Liz lips quirked into a smile. Max was right. Liz rattled off the answer and after four other questions from CSM Evans, all of which Max had informed Liz about already, Diane asked Liz to stand at attention and march back outside.

Once Liz was back in the conference room, Michael pounced. “How’d ya do?”

Liz was definitely confident, but she didn’t want to jinx herself. “We’ll see,” she told him.

Just then CSM Evans came out of the board room and approached Liz, “Good job, SPC Parker...or should I say...Sergeant Parker?” Diane gave Liz a wink and left the room, leaving Liz and Michael in awe.

OH MY GOD!!!” Liz started jumping up and down and Michael smiled wide, very excited for his soldier.

Michael slung an arm around Liz’s shoulders. “Good job, Parker! We’re celebrating tonight. We’ll all go clubbin’ okay?” Liz nodded. “But you’re buyin’ Sergeant.” Michael left and Liz drove back to the barracks to change for work.

Maria was on her way out when Liz came in. Maria stopped in her tracks and said, “Look, Parker, I’ve been thinking about yesterday and...I’ve got your back.”

Liz’s face lit up. “Really?”

“Yeah,” Maria nodded, “I won’t tell anyone.” Liz gave Maria a huge hug, thanking her. Maria finally realized what Liz was wearing and remembered her board. “How’d you do on the board?”

Liz’s smug smile had Maria hugging and congratulating her for a job well done. Liz filled Maria in on the activities for the night and Maria was totally going to be celebrating with them.

Liz felt great. She was going to be a Sergeant finally, Maria was still her best friend, and Max was all hers. Everything was perfect. Liz wanted to freeze the moment, but only because she knew deep down that it wouldn’t last very long.
