Summary: An Alternate Universe. No one is an Alien. There's someone rather special that Elizabeth wants for Christmas, but it seems he has eyes only for someone else. Can she find help in getting what she wants during a special Christmas Holiday? Or is what she wants really the right thing?

Category: M&L

Rating: MATURE

Authors Note: Isabel and Max are NOT brother and sister in this story. Thank you to my beta team members, Jen and Jeannine. :) I would be lost without you.

Last Christmas, I gave you my heart
But the very next day, You gave it away
This year, to save me from tears
I'll give it to someone special

Last Christmas, I gave you my heart
But the very next day, You gave it away
This year, to save me from tears
I'll give it to someone special

Once bitten and twice shy
I keep my distance but you still catch my eye
Tell me baby do you recognize me?
Well it's been a year, it doesn't surprise me

(Happy Christmas!) I wrapped it up and sent it
With a note saying "I Love You" I meant it
Now I know what a fool I've been
But if you kissed me now I know you'd fool me again

Chorus

(Oooh. Oooh Baby)

A crowded room, friends with tired eyes
I'm hiding from you and your soul of ice
My God I thought you were someone to rely on
Me? I guess I was a shoulder to cry on
A face on a lover with a fire in his heart
A man undercover but you tore me apart
Oooh Oooh
Now I've found a real love you'll never fool me again

Chorus

A face on a lover with a fire in his heart
(Gave you my heart)
A man undercover but you tore me apart
Next year
I'll give it to someone, I'll give it to someone special
special
someone
someone
I'll give it to someone, I'll give it to someone special
who'll give me something in return
I'll give it to someone
hold my heart and watch it burn
I'll give it to someone, I'll give it to someone special
I've got you here to stay
I can love you for a day
I thought you were someone special
gave you my heart
I'll give it to someone, I'll give it to someone
last Christmas I gave you my heart
you gave it away
I'll give it to someone, I'll give it to someone

Invitation to a Disaster.

In the cold early December weather, the Charles River flowed easily along its banks, separating Cambridge and Boston. At its edges, ice was already beginning to form but so far, no snow had fallen. In the middle of the river, struggling against the current and the cold, four teams from the Harvard rowing club were being put through their paces. Their faces were shining red with cold while great clouds of steam rose from their mouths as they exhaled with each stroke. Along the paths that lined both banks, joggers, cyclists, a few rollerbladers and occasional walkers braved the bitter chill that was blowing down from Canada. The threat of snow was ever present.

In her warm apartment high above, looking down at the nameless faces, Elizabeth Parker stood by the large picture window and talked to her best friend, Maria DeLuca. The apartment was one of the most luxurious in the Cambridge area. Which was just as well, because Elizabeth Parker came from one of the more wealthy families on the East Coast of America. She came from old money, not the nouveau riche that had ridden on the back of speculative oil strikes or the dot com explosions.

The flat contained all the necessary mod cons that befitted someone of her background. The kitchen had been fitted by exclusive designers. The bathroom was all white marble and gold accessories. Her furniture was handmade. Her books were all first editions, even the school books she needed to study with. In the corner on the handmade desk, the latest, fastest computer system had been installed, just for Elizabeth to type up her thesis and retrieve data from the internet.

Her clothes were all designer labels. Purchased from exclusive stores, usually with the help of personal shoppers, she always looked classy, if a little on the conservative side. Even now, in the comfort of her own home, Elizabeth was wearing a brown tweed skirt, a cream shirt and a beige cashmere sweater. She held the latest designer cell phone to her ear.

"So how are things in Princeton, Maria?" Elizabeth cast an eye over the boat crews and shook her head at their dedication.

"It's great, Elizabeth," Maria told her. "Really, really great. You know, you should transfer over here. We can be together again, then."

"I already told you," Elizabeth rolled her eyes. "Harvard is where I have to be. You know it's always been my dream to come here and study micro biology."

"Yeah," Maria sighed. "I just miss you is all. I miss my best friend, okay?"

"I miss you too, Maria," Elizabeth smiled. "But we get to see each other quite a lot, you know? And I don't just mean by web cam over MSN."

"I know. Those monthly get-togethers are great and all... but sometimes I really need to talk face to face, girl. You know? To let off steam."

"Talking of which," Elizabeth laughed. "How is Michael? You two still dating?"

"Meaning?" Maria tried to sound hurt.

"Meaning you two seem to fight more that you actually, uhm... make out."

"What Michael and I have is unique, okay?" Maria defended. "And yes. For your information, we are still dating. Which you know full well 'cause you know I would have told you otherwise."

"I know," Elizabeth nodded. "I was only teasing. So how long has it been now?"

"Since spring break," Maria concentrated. "So, what? Nine months?"

"Sounds about right. So this will be your first Christmas together."

"And talking of Christmas," Maria chuckled. "That's what I'm calling you for. Remember how we went to Mohawk Mountain over in Connecticut last Christmas? Well, Vicky and Alex and me were talking. We want to do it again this year. We thought it would be kind of nice if we made this our traditional thing, seeing as how we all go to different colleges now. Are you up for it?"

"Is everybody else going?"

"Of course they are. Michael and I are going. Alex is still dating Isabel, so they'll be there. Vicky has a new boyfriend this year. Someone called Kyle Valenti. We haven't met him yet but they already said they're coming. So too will Jesse and Courtney."

"What about," Elizabeth's voice fell. She sounded hesitant, nervous. "What about your cousin? Sean. Is uh, Sean going?"

"Yeah," Maria spoke with sympathy in her voice. "Sean will be there."

"Alone?" she held her breath in hope.

Maria remained silent for a moment.

"No," she spoke at last. "He's bringing Tess. They're still together."

"Can't he see that she's just a gold digging tart?" Elizabeth shook her head, fighting back the tears. "She's not right for him."

"They've been together a year, Elizabeth," Maria whispered. "Don't you think you're maybe being a little hard on the girl? And it's not like she doesn't have her own money. The Harding's are nearly as rich as your family."

"But not as rich as the DeLuca's."

"You don't have to come," Maria sounded disappointed. "I'll understand."

"I never said I wasn't coming," Elizabeth protested.

"So you are?"

"Yeah," she nodded. "I'll be there."

"Uhm..." Maria hesitated. "Are you going to be coming alone?"

"No," Elizabeth shook her head with a wide-eyed look of panic. "Jeez, Maria. Do you think I sit alone in my apartment mooning for Sean all day? I do have a boyfriend, actually. I have a life you know."

"So how come I haven't heard about him yet?" Maria sounded offended. "How come I haven't had the chance to interrogate him yet?"

"'Cause I didn't want you scaring him off, Maria. You know you can be a bit..."

"Thorough?"

"In your face."

"That too," Maria laughed. "So how long have you been keeping me in the dark?"

"We started dating back at the end of October," Elizabeth closed her eyes and rubbed her forehead. "He's really, really nice. Oh, and rich. Very rich."

"Uh huh," Maria seemed eager for more. "And what about, you know... Sex?"

"It's wonderful, Maria," Elizabeth gushed. "Really, really wonderful."

"Wow," Maria was excited. "I can't wait to meet him. So what's his name?"

"Oh, you know what, Maria?" Elizabeth started to panic. "Someone's at the door. It's probably him. Look, I'll call you later, okay? Bye."

She pressed the button to cancel the call. She slapped the phone shut and in a fit of anger, she hurled the phone across the room. Luckily, it bounced off of her sofa and landed on a cushion.

I want my arms around you for Christmas
I need no presents under the tree
You're all I want, my darling
And that will be the world to me.

I want to share your kisses for Christmas
The rest is only tinsel and show
You're all I want, my darling
At candle glow and mistletoe.

As far as I'm concerned
Santa doesn't have to load his sleigh
He can mark my other gifts 'returned'
Or give them all away.

I only want your lovin' for Christmas
No other kind of present will do
You're all I want, my darling
Please want me too
Please want me too
Please want me too
As I want you.

Plottings

Elizabeth sat with her best friend in Harvard, Serena Wilson, at a table by the window of Ciao Bella, a charming café on Boston's exclusive Newbury Street. The two young ladies liked to get together there once a week and just talk. It was the equivalent to Elizabeth and Maria's weekly ice cream fest.

"We grew up together," Elizabeth was staring at her Latte, stirring her spoon around and around the froth. "Me, Maria, Vicky, Alex, Jesse and Sean. We were always one big group. The six of us against the world, always looking out for each other. We all graduated High School together. We even said we would attend the same college together, but that never happened. Maria went to Princeton, Alex went to MIT, Jesse went to the University of Pennsylvania, Vicky went to Cornell and Sean... Sean went to Yale. We all paired up for events. Sean and I went to our Senior Prom as each other's dates, you know? As friends."

"But you wanted more?"

"Yeah," Elizabeth looked up and nodded over her coffee. "I've had a crush on Sean for such a long time. Maybe tenth grade when I finally started to notice boys. But I was always just his sister's friend. Until last Christmas."

"What happened then?"

"We rented this lodge down in Connecticut. Mohawk Mountain. Do you know it?"

Serena shook her head.

"Alex brought his girlfriend, Isabel. Jesse brought his, Courtney. Me and Maria weren't dating anyone then so we went alone. And Sean..." Elizabeth took a deep breath. "Sean brought this girl, Tess."

"I guess you didn't like her," Serena picked up the venom in Elizabeth's tone.

"He wasn't dating her then, but he wanted to," Elizabeth continued. "I think he was hoping to impress her or something. She was my height, but has this blonde curly hair and she kind of stacked, you know?"

"A lot of guys go for that," Serena shook her head again.

Elizabeth nodded.

"Anyway, he wasn't getting anywhere with her, and so on Christmas Eve, I found him in the living room, having a drink. He wasn't drunk or anything, just a little... tipsy. He asked me what was wrong with him, why Tess didn't like him. I told him that nothing was wrong with him, how any girl would be lucky to have him. And then he kissed me. And it was so... perfect. And things got a little heated." Elizabeth gave a wistful smile. "I was so happy! We were finally together. One thing led to another and I kind of surrendered myself to him. I gave him my virginity. I was never happier in all my life. I was so happy, that I overslept. I practically danced downstairs to the living room, where the gang was already opening presents. And then I saw them." Elizabeth's voice went cold. "Tess was sitting on Sean's lap and they were..." Her voice started to break up. "They were making out."

"Oh, Elizabeth," Serena reached across and took Elizabeth's hand. "I'm so sorry."

"He gave her this necklace," Elizabeth continued. "It was a huge diamond. I guess she realized then what a catch he was and gave in to him. She doesn't love him. Not like I do."

Serena remained quiet. There was nothing to say.

"Oh, Serena," Liz sobbed. "What am I going to do? I mean, I can't show up on my own. Not now. Maria will have told everyone by now and I'll end up looking like such a loser."

"Can't you just tell them that he had to go home or something?" Serena narrowed her eyes in thought. "You know, family business"

"Yeah, like they'll believe that," she hid her face in the arms, folded on the table.

"You don't have any guy friends you could ask?" Serena shrugged. "You know, to pretend to be your boyfriend?"

"None that I would trust," Liz raised her head, shaking it. "The only guys I know are going to think they have some kind of chance to score, right? And how can I explain to a friend that I just want to make Sean jealous, that I want to win him back? Who's going to appreciate being used like that?"

"You could always hire someone," a light bulb appeared above Serena's head. "Like an escort or something. You let them know exactly what you want from them and put it in some form of contract. They'll do what you want or risk not being paid. That way, they're not being used per se, because they're being paid for their time."

"A contract," Liz nodded, her eyes brightening. "So where do I find these escorts?"

"Well, you could always look in the phone book," Serena was thinking. "But if I were you. I would check out the notice boards on campus. There's always ads from students who need the extra money and offer their services. You know. House sitting, or driving cars across country and stuff. Whatever they can do to make the extra bucks toward their tuition costs. Not everyone is here on a full scholarship, or has rich parents, you know."

"And you think they would do this?"

"Why not? A free skiing holiday? Good food? Good company for Christmas? And getting paid for it, too? Who wouldn't do it? It's not like they're really with you or anything."

"I guess," Elizabeth was smiling.

"My advice? Make a list and call them up. Interview them. You need to find someone who will fit the bill. They have to be good looking enough to make Sean jealous and intelligent enough to understand the score. And a good actor would be useful. I'll even help you draw up the contract, seeing as I'm a Law major and all. But you better get your skates on. We only have two weeks till Christmas break."

"God," Elizabeth was showing signs of excitement. "I hope this works."

Oh, the weather outside is frightful,
But the fire is so delightful;
And since we've no place to go,
Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow.

Man, it doesn't show signs of stoppin',
And I brought me some corn for poppin';
The lights are turned way down low,
Let it snow, let it snow.

When we finally kiss good night,
How I'll hate goin' out in the storm;
But if you really hold me tight,
All the way home I'll be warm.

And, the fire is slowly dyin',
And, my dear, we're still goodbye-in';
But as long as you love me so,
Let it snow, let it snow and snow.

When we finally kiss good night,
How I'll hate goin' out in the storm;
But if you really grab me tight,
All the way home I'll be warm.

Oh, the fire is slowly dyin',
And, my dear, we're still goodbye-in';
But as long as you love me so,
Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow.

Geeks, Sickos and Pervs

The two weeks passed by rather quickly. There was little time for Elizabeth to meet Serena because of the midterms, and Elizabeth's interviews she had been conducting since she had created her list of potential candidates. With school breaking up tomorrow, time was of the essence and things had not gone well at all. They met once again at Ciao Bella on Newbury Street. Elizabeth was not as excited as she had been almost two weeks ago. Elizabeth had arrived first, taking the table by the window as they usually did.

Serena arrived just as the waitress brought over the two coffees in china cups.

"Can you believe this weather?" Serena stamped her feet to dislodge the snow that clung to her shoes.

"I know," Elizabeth nodded. "Last week, nothing. And just today, what is that out there now? Six inches?"

"At least," she sat down opposite her friend and wrapped her hands around the large bowl to warm them. "So where are we at?"

"Any more bright ideas?" Liz grumbled, handing Serena a sheet of typed paper containing names that had been crossed out in red pen.

"I take it the interviews didn't go well?" she raised her eyebrows at the list.

"Are you kidding?" Elizabeth rolled her eyes. "The only guys left on those boards were all geeks, sickos or pervs. No way could any one of them pull off being my boyfriend. Jeez, I do have 'some' taste, you know. This was a stupid plan to begin with."

"And you have a better plan, I presume?" Serena did not take any offense at Elizabeth's outburst.

"No," she crossed her arms over her chest and gave a sulky pout. "There's got to be someone out there who looks good enough to play the part and who needs the money."

"Well..." Serena hesitated. "There's this guy I know... he's in some of my classes... but Elizabeth, this guy is really poor, okay? Like not only are his books third or fourth hand, so are his clothes. And he might not be able to pass himself off as coming from money. But... with a few square meals inside him and a decent set of clothes... a haircut, a shower... I mean, he might be able to pull it off."

"What, is he good looking, you think?"

"Yeah," Serena nodded. "I'd have to say that he does have a certain charm to him. Yeah, I think he could pass himself off as good looking. And even though his grades are only just acceptable to keep him in school, he's got to be intelligent to have made it to Harvard to study Law in the first place, right?"

"Yeah," Elizabeth nodded. "But those other dorks I interviewed attend Harvard, too, you know?"

Serena just looked back in silence.

"Fine," Elizabeth sighed. "Do you have his number?"

"Oh yeah," Serena nodded with sarcasm. "I have every loser's phone number. As soon as I saw him, I just had to ask him for it."

"I was only wondering," Elizabeth rolled her eyes.

"No," Serena smiled. "I don't have his number. Heck, he probably can't even afford a phone. But I'll make a few inquiries."

It'll be lonely this Christmas
without you to hold
It'll be lonely this Christmas
lonely and cold
It'll be cold, so cold, without you to hold
this Christmas.

Try to imagine a house that's not a home
Try to imagine a Christmas all alone
That's where I'll be since you left me
My tears could melt the snow
What can I do without you?
I've got no place, no place to go.

It'll be lonely this Christmas
without you to hold
It'll be lonely this Christmas
lonely and cold
It'll be cold, so cold, without you to hold
this Christmas.

It'll be lonely this Christmas
without you to hold
It'll be lonely this Christmas
lonely and cold
It'll be cold, so cold, without you to hold
this Christmas.

Home Sweet Home

"Merry Christmas!" the fat, jolly old elf with white hair, a white beard and dressed in a red suit cried into the cold night air as he rang the hand bell. He stood with his back to a trash can in which a small fire was burning sticks of wood, providing him with a little warmth against the falling snow. "Ho, ho, ho! Merry Christmas! Please give generously to the homeless. Ho, ho, ho! Merry Christmas!"

As they passed by him, most people threw a hand full of change into the collection pot that sat in the snow by his feet. It was half full with coins of mainly small denominations. Many chose to ignore him, looking the other way as they walked but on the whole, humanity was not unkind.

"Thank you," he would nod at those who donated money. "Merry Christmas."

Max Evans, tall, dark and definitely handsome, stopped by the pot and rummaged through his pockets. Finding a fist full of mainly pennies, he gave all he had.

"Sorry," he shrugged before tucking his hands into his coat pockets and hunched his shoulders against the cold.

Max lowered his head and continued up the street toward the tenement blocks further up the road. The wind whipped his shoulder length locks, held in place only by the efforts of an old woolen cap that was pulled low over his ears. He wore a battered simulation leather jacket and a pair of jeans that stopped a little above his ankles. The elbows and knees were both rather threadbare. In spite of the wet snow, he wore gym shoes on his feet, wet ones at that. His face was red from the cold and his hands were pulled up into the sleeves of the sweater that he wore under his jacket. His clothing was most definitely unsuitable for this weather at this time of the year.

He looked at a brightly-lit cash machine and stopped. With his breath forming clouds of steam, he stared at the welcoming glow of the illuminated screen. His face was thrown into prominence. He held the pale, gaunt look of a man who had either been working too hard or who had missed too many meals. Maybe both. Reaching into an inside pocket, his hand, bright red from the cold pulled out a small rectangular card. He pushed it into the slot, watching as it disappeared. When prompted, he punched in his four digit PIN number and followed the instructions. After he typed in the amount of cash, he straightened his back and held his breath. His eyes were fixed on the screen.

"Insufficient funds available for this transaction."

He did not look too surprised by this information but his breath was released with an explosive groan. Max looked back at the Santa Clause and wondered if he might give him his change back.

"Looks like I go hungry again," he sighed.

He pulled the rejected card back and shoved it into his pocket, turning once more down the road, his footsteps crunching in the newly fallen snow.

He continued to walk past the elegant buildings that lined the broad streets. He turned into a darkened alleyway and crossed a vacant lot that held large posters proclaiming another property development by DeLuca's. Eventually, he came upon a tall, broad building that was only just this side of being condemned. It was hard to believe that in as cosmopolitan a town as Cambridge, a stone's throw away from Harvard Square there was a block of flats that could only be described as being a slum. But the rooms were cheap and Max 'really' needed cheap right now. At the dirty, broken front steps, he skipped up, two at a time.

Pausing at the top, he took a deep breath and eased the front door open, glad that the hinges had recently been oiled. He started to take slow, deliberate steps across the hall, on tip toes, moving quietly past the first doorway. His stealth continued up the first flight of steps. For good measure, he continued up the second. He almost ran up the third and fourth, eager to escape the detection of his landlord, who would only demand the rent he was due and as yet, had not been paid. On the top floor, he walked past the many doorways to the room at the end. There was a white envelope pinned to his door. Max's heart sank. He may have been stealthy enough to evade him when he came in, but his landlord clearly had other tricks up his sleeve. Max momentarily wondered about leaving it there and claiming he never saw it. Pulling the note free, he used his key to unlock the door and he stepped inside his room.

Inside Max's room was as Spartan as being outside. It contained only those items he considered essential. There was a bed, with a sleeping bag and a blanket folded at one end. Next to a bed was a wardrobe that held the rest of Max's clothes, none of which were any better than those he was wearing now. By the one window with big cracks in the glass, sealed with duct tape, there was a desk and a chair. On one corner of the desk was a radio and a stack of battered and worn school books. On the other stood a kettle, a mug, a small bottle of a white cloudy substance, an empty jar of generic instant coffee, an empty tin that once held sugar, a large cup and a teaspoon on which sat a used teabag. In the corner of the room was a cracked, stained sink with two faucets. One was the cold tap which provided Max with drinking water that could very well contain traces of lead. The other was the hot water which had never worked since Max moved into this room one year ago last September.

Max's first task was to put enough water in to fill his cup. He checked the electricity meter to make sure he had enough credit to power the kettle as well as illuminate his room with the single low watt light bulb long enough to do his homework. While the kettle was trying to boil the water, he placed the old teabag into the mug. He lifted the milk bottle to his nose and pulled a sour face when he sniffed it. He tipped the curdled milk into the sink, flushing the residue away with water that he was surprised to find wasn't frozen. When the kettle gave the soft 'click' that told Max it had boiled, he poured the water over the teabag and left it to steep.

Max then picked up the blanket, opening it out to its full extent. He wrapped it around him, rubbing his arms to stimulate blood flow and hopefully, warmth. He turned his attention to the note, ripping the envelope across the top. As he had suspected, it was from his landlord.

"One week to pay the rent, plus the other four weeks I owe," Max raised his eyebrows. "Otherwise, don't bother to come back next term."

Max looked at the cup of tea and chuckled.

"Come back? As if I can afford to go anywhere."

He lifted the note to continue reading.

"And in case you don't go home for Christmas, then I'm sure my sons - you've met them, right? The big guys who work in construction. I'm sure they would help you move out. Really friendly there, Mr. Green," Max dropped the note in the paper bag that doubled as his trash can.

Sitting down at the desk, Max opened a notebook and a thick text book and started to make notes while he read key passages. He paused every now and then to sip at the hot water that the reused tea bag managed to stain a pale brown color. His stomach let out a loud, angry growl of hunger.

"I'll be glad when spring comes," he shook his head, tightening his belt.

I'm gettin' nuttin' for Christmas
Mommy and Daddy are mad
I'm gettin' nuttin' for Christmas
'Cause I ain't been nuttin' but bad

I broke my bat on Johnny's head
Somebody snitched on me
I hid a frog in sister's bed
Somebody snitched on me
I spilled some ink on Mommy's rug
I made Johnny eat a bug
Bought some gum with a penny slug
Somebody snitched on me

Oh
I'm gettin' nuttin' for Christmas
Mommy and Daddy are mad
I'm gettin' nuttin' for Christmas
'Cause I ain't been nuttin' but bad

I put a tack on teacher's chair
Somebody snitched on me
I tied a knot in Suzy's hair
Somebody snitched on me
I did a dance on Mommy's plants
Climbed a tree and tore my pants
Filled that sugar bowl with ants
Somebody snitched on me

Oh
I'm gettin' nuttin' for Christmas
Mommy and Daddy are mad
I'm gettin' nuttin' for Christmas
'Cause I ain't been nuttin' but bad

So you better be good
Whatever you do
'Cause if you're bad, I'm warning you
You'll gettin' nuttin' for Christmas

Gotta Work

His battered cell phone started to ring. He looked at the display but could not really see who it was who was calling through the scratches and scuff marks.

"Hello?" he answered.

"Hi, Max," he heard his mother's voice.

"Mom," Max smiled.

"How are you?"

"I'm doing great," he crossed his fingers. "School work's hard and all, but I'm doing okay."

"Are you eating well?"

"Of course," he hoped she could sense the big cheesy grin he was faking.

His stomach gave another growl.

"I was wondering if you might be coming home for Christmas. You know, we never see you anymore. Not since you left last year."

"Oh, mom," he sighed. "You know, I have to do all this extra work to keep up, and I just have so much work to do over the holidays..."

He glanced at the newspaper on the floor, opened at the want ads with red rings around various casual labor jobs. Most of them seemed to be shelf stocking or box moving.

"I can't afford to fall behind, you know? Besides, Roswell is such a long trip. I'd have to turn around and come back again as soon as I got there."

"You know your stepfather and I..."

"No, Mom," he gently rebuked her. "I can't take your money."

"It's just... You're my son, Max. And I miss you."

"I miss you too, Mom. And when I graduate, I promise. You'll see a whole lot more of me, okay?"

"You never call."

"I write."

"How come you can't pick up a phone every now and then?"

"We're not allowed to use phones in class" he laughed. "And at night, I'm either working or studying." He neglected to tell her he had no credit on his phone in any case.

When he finally hung up, he sat there for a moment, staring into space with a look of sadness. A slight movement to his left distracted him. A large rat poked his head out through a gap in the floorboards and started to sniff the air.

"Sorry, Mickey," Max gave him a weak smile. "Looks like we go hungry till I can find us a job. Oh, and don't get me anything for Christmas, okay? 'Cause I can't afford to buy you anything."

The rat disappeared.

Snowflakes falling down, on every little town
A blanket of stars above
Church bells are ringing, children are singing
It's Christmas, it's Christmas, Christmas everywhere

Lovers often go, under mistletoe
And kiss until dawn's early light
Sleigh bells are ringing, choirs are singing
It's Christmas, it's Christmas, Christmas everywhere

Christmas trees all aglow
Stockings are hung with care
Stars brightly gleaming, children are dreaming
That Santa soon will be there

Snowflakes falling down, on every little town
A blanket of stars above
Church bells are ringing, choirs are singing
It's Christmas, it's Christmas, Christmas everywhere

It's Christmas everywhere

Last Christmas - M&L - NEW Part 2 - 12/20/05

Post by WR »

Hi Everyone,

Thank you all so very much for your feedback. It is my intention to post a chapter of this story each night for you. So, because I have the final two chapters to complete, I am remarkably busy. I am sorry that I will not be responding individually as I normally do.

To that end, lets get on with the story, right?

Great Expectations

"Well?" Elizabeth demanded as soon as Serena had stepped into the café. "Did you give him the note? What did he say?"

"No," Serena shook her head. "He wasn't in."

Removing her heavy winter coat and hanging it on the coat rack, Serena sat down across from Elizabeth.

"Oh," Elizabeth sounded so disappointed. "So what did you do? How are we going to ask him? Do we have to find someone else?"

"I pinned a note to his door," Serena shrugged. "Relax, Elizabeth. I bet your phone will be ringing any moment now."

"I thought you said he doesn't have a phone," Elizabeth narrowed her eyes.

"Probably," she shook her head. "I said he 'probably' doesn't have a phone. And if he doesn't, I left him with option B."

Elizabeth stared into her half-empty coffee cup in silence.

"Serena," she spoke at last. "What if this doesn't work?"

"You know," Serena looked hard at her friend. "I have to ask if all this effort and lost sleep is really worth it. Is Sean really worth it?"

"Oh, yeah," Elizabeth nodded fiercely. "Trust me. He is. I've been in love with him ever since he kissed me on my sixteenth birthday."

"It sounds more like an infatuation to me," her friend gave a wry grin. "And what will you do if you happen to fall in love with this other guy?"

"Uhm, let me think," Elizabeth made a play of appearing to concentrate hard by folding one arm across her chest and placing a finger of her other hand on her chin. "Sean DeLuca, heir to the DeLuca empire, hot stud, really, really great guy and someone I've been in love with for three years or some poor loser who has to work at crappy jobs to maintain a C average and who I hardly even know. Please."

"That sounds really shallow, Elizabeth."

"Sorry," she sighed. "I didn't mean it to be. You just don't understand. Maybe if you ever met Sean... I've known him my whole life and he's such a... he's just so... great. I mean, he was the most popular guy in high school and he chose to hang out with me. And the others, too. But this Max guy. He could never fit in with all those parties, and social events. Come on, Serena. You know what my life is going to be like? How can I take some back country hick into a life like that? Talk about your fish out of water. Besides, even if he is good looking, it's going to take me ages to get to know him. Do you really think I am going to fall in love with him over the course of one week? A week during which I will be spending as much time with Sean as possible?"

"Did you ever stop to consider that maybe Sean doesn't see you as girlfriend material? That maybe he doesn't love you? And why the rush? Why not just wait till you graduate?"

"Of course he loves me," Elizabeth looked genuinely offended. "He would never have made love to me otherwise. He even told me he did. It's just... Tess. She's obviously a slut and he just needs to get that all out of his system. You do know that relationships formed in college are the best and longest lasting, right?"

"Where did you learn that little gem?" Serena laughed.

"Everyone says so."

"So what will you do if this fails?"

"No, no, no," Elizabeth shook her head. "You don't understand, Serena. This can't fail. This just... can't."

I don't want a lot for Christmas
There is just one thing I need
I don't care about presents
Underneath the Christmas tree
I just want you for my own
More than you could ever know
Make my wish come true ...
All I want for Christmas
Is you ...

I don't want a lot for Christmas
There is just one thing I need
I don't care about presents
Underneath the Christmas tree
I don't need to hang my stocking
There upon the fireplace
Santa Claus won't make me happy
With a toy on Christmas day
I just want you for my own
More than you could ever know
Make my wish come true
All I want for Christmas is you ...

I won't ask for much this Christmas
I won't even wish for snow
I'm just gonna keep on waiting
Underneath the mistletoe
I won't make a list and send it
To the North Pole for Saint Nick
I won't even stay awake to
hear those magic reindeer click
'Cause I just want you here tonight
Holding on to me so tight
What more can I do
Baby all I want for Christmas is you

All the lights are shining
So brightly everywhere
And the sound of children's
Laughter fills the air
And everyone is singing
I hear those sleigh bells ringing
Santa won't you bring me the one
I really need - won't you please
Bring my baby to me ...

Oh I don't want a lot for Christmas
This is all I'm asking for
I just want to see my baby
Standing right outside my door
Oh I just want him for my own
More than you could ever know
Make my wish come true
Baby all I want for Christmas
Is you ...

All I want for Christmas
Is you baby
Is you baby

Sold

Max was tired and exhausted when he returned from his job stocking shelves at the nearby Wal-mart. It wasn't much of a job in that it was long, hard hours for a minimum wage but at least he was able to buy groceries from a wire basket that held damaged products at a reduced rate. Or rather, he would be able to buy them when he received his first paycheck tomorrow.

At the top of the stone steps, Max kicked his feet against the brick wall to remove the snow that clung to his shoes. His feet were cold and wet. Nothing new. Having already received his warning letter from his landlord a few days ago, he felt no need to sneak past the doorway to his apartment. If Max paid him the day after tomorrow, he would be allowed to stay. If not... Max hoped that Mr. Green would accept a partial payment. His first paycheck would not cover everything.

He couldn't believe it when he got to his door and found another envelope pinned to it.

"You gave me a week!" he bellowed down the hallway. "I still have two stinking days!"

He ripped the envelope from the door in disgust and screwed it into a ball. Unlocking his door, he stepped inside and threw the crumpled ball at the paper bag. He missed; it bounced against the ball and rolled beneath his chair.

After turning on his dim light bulb, Max poured just enough water into his kettle, and turned it on. He knew that he had enough credit in his meter to last another two days. He wrapped the blanket around him again as he waited for the kettle to boil. With a huge smile, Max pulled a brand new teabag from his inside pocket. He practically licked his lips as he poured hot water into his cup and watched the liquid turn a deep brown tea-like color. He spotted the rat by the hole, sitting up on his hind legs sniffing the air.

"Don't look at me like that, Mickey," Max shook his head with a frown. "Yes, I stole it, okay? But it's only one lousy teabag." He turned to the rat who had just scurried back down the hole. "And it wasn't me who stole my last slice of bread the other day!"

Squeezing the teabag, Max laid this in the spoon to be used for tomorrow morning's cup. He liked a hot drink to start the day. He would have also liked a breakfast but beggars couldn't be choosers.

With his cup of tea - minus milk and sugar - Max sat at his desk and started to do more work on his thesis. Part of his work was sitting in a plastic wallet, already typed and printed courtesy of the public computers at a local library, but even that cost money. He had as many hand written sheets as he had printed. He worked for at least an hour into the evening, making his tea last for as long as the temperature held. He hated cold tea as much as he hated being hungry.

Taking a short break, Max sat on the corner of his bed and rubbed his wrists which were numb with both cold and the ache from writing. He spotted the crumpled paper under the chair. With a sigh he picked it up and opened it.

"Let's see what Mr. Green wants this time," he glanced at Mickey's hole. The rodent wasn't there.

When he pulled out the note, Max saw at once that it wasn't from Mr. Green after all. It was an unknown handwriting and it looked feminine. It was a good quality paper, too, with linen in it, rather than the slices of near wood that he used.

"Mr. Evans," he read aloud. "I have a financial proposition to put to you, one which would pay you far more than any other job you might be able to find this holiday. If I can count on your full cooperation and your full discretion, then my offer will prove not only very profitable, but also very pleasant. You might even enjoy this Christmas. This offer will not involve you in any illegal activity and neither will it jeopardize your place here at Harvard. If you are interested, call 555 6477 or else please meet me in the lobby of the Harvard Science Library at eight o'clock this evening."

Max read the letter over and over again. There were no clues as to the originator of the letter, what it was he was expected to do, or how much he would be paid. It did state that he would be paid more than he could earn from any other job, and that it could prove enjoyable. And maybe, just maybe, he could ask for an advance. It certainly wouldn't hurt him to listen to the offer. It's not like he had any other options just now. Max picked up his cell phone and peered through the scruffy covering to see the time shown on the panel. It was almost seven thirty. After a quick mental calculation, he decided that he could just make the library, if he ran. Throwing his blanket onto the bed, Max turned out the light, stepped outside and locked his door. He didn't want to lose what little he had. He ran down the steps taking three and sometimes four at a time.

You'd better watch out, you'd better not cry,
You'd better not pout, I'm telling you why,
Santa Claus is comin' to town.

He's making a list, checkin' it twice,
He's gonna find out who's naughty and nice,
Santa Claus is comin' to town.

He sees you when you're sleepin',
He knows when you're awake,
He knows if you've been bad or good,
So be good for goodness sake.

Oh, you'd better watch out, you'd better not cry,
You'd better not pout, I'm tellin' you why,
Santa Claus is comin' to town.

Say, you'd better watch out, you'd better not cry,
You'd better not pout, I'm tellin' you why,
Santa Claus is comin' to town.

He's makin' a list and he's checkin' it twice,
He's gonna find out who's been naughty and nice,
Santa Claus is comin' to town.

He sees you when you're sleepin',
He knows when you're awake
He knows if you've been bad or good,
So be good for goodness sake.

Oh, you'd better watch out, you'd better not cry,
You'd better not pout, I'm tellin' you why,
Santa Claus is comin' to town.

The Devil's Deal

The large clock on the wall read 8:05 when he burst through the large, ornate doors and into the lobby of the Harvard Science Library. Panting heavily, with his hands resting on his knees as he bent over to try and catch his breath, he surveyed the large room. An attractive but small brunette was approaching him. She wore a deep brown corduroy skirt with a Cream color sweater. She had on a thick woolen coat, unbuttoned, and expensive looking winter boots on her feet. She could have been quite attractive if her face was not pinched with annoyance.

"You're late," she snapped.

"Bite me," Max snapped back. Job or no job, he didn't stand for anyone treating him like he was nothing.

"Do you want this job?" her tone was one that showed she clearly expected to be treated like she was so much better than him.

"I don't know," he shook his head. "I haven't heard the details yet."

"I can just as easily hire someone else, you know."

Max considered this.

"Look at you," he nodded at her. "Obviously rich. Clearly used to getting your own way. And you really need someone to do something for you and I bet you're getting a little desperate. There aren't many people left on campus now and I bet, with me, you are already scraping the bottom of the barrel. So stop acting like you have so many options and tell me what it is you would like me to do. Then I can consider it and decide if I do or do not want to be associated with you."

The brunette narrowed her eyes and glared at him. This was not the best of starts with a potential employer, even if she was one of the most attractive young women he had ever seen. He wondered what being a friend of hers would be like. Her boyfriend, even.

Elizabeth led the rather uncouth young man to a table inside the actual library, close to the back where she knew they would not be disturbed. It was already a few days after the official end of the semester and although there were a few students who remained on campus, few ventured to the library in the evenings. She cast a surreptitious glance at the table where Serena sat, keeping a protective eye on her.

Sitting down, Elizabeth indicated the chair across the table for the young man to sit down in and while she pretended to arrange her notes, she covertly studied him. Serena had been right. With a haircut, some decent clothes and a little more weight, he would be just what she needed to make Sean jealous. She could see that this Max Evans would be very attractive indeed. But she was also aware that beauty was more than skin deep and his demeanor had so far not impressed her at all. She had seen his type before. A rebel, angry at the world for his lot and when he one day had any money, he would treat the other people like him the same way he perceived that people with money treated him right now. But he was good looking.

"So, uh, Miss..." Max looked at her. "You said you have a deal for me."

"My name is Elizabeth Parker," she nodded. "Not Liz. Not Lizzie. Not Beth. Elizabeth. And yes. I do. It's quite simple, really," she looked up from her notes. "I have a friend... a good friend, and he is... well, he's dating a girl that is so not right for him."

"Uh huh," Max nodded with a knowing smirk.

"And I want to, uhm, break them up," she lost a little of her confidence. She started to feel flustered, aware that this man was seeing straight through her.

"So the bottom line is you don't like it that your ex-boyfriend has a new girlfriend and you can't handle the jealousy, right? And you want to hire me to what? Seduce her?"

Elizabeth closed her eyes and tried to regain her composure.

"Sort of," she nodded at last. "We are having this get together. For Christmas. A whole group of us. I want to hire you to accompany me, pretend to be my boyfriend. I want my ex... I want this man to realize what he might lose and start to pay attention to me. If you can manage to seduce his girlfriend and split them up then that would be great because then I can step in and offer him a shoulder to cry on, and well... you know."

"Yeah," Max nodded. "I know."

"I will pay you a fee to act as my boyfriend, but I warn you now. No funny business, okay? You can act all affectionate but no kissing and there will definitely be no sex. You want to get laid, you seduce his girlfriend. She's a slut anyway so you shouldn't find it too difficult. If I get him back, then I will pay you a bonus. Are you interested?"

Truthfully, Max was most assuredly not interested. Splitting up a couple was not the sort of thing he was struggling through college for. But he did need the money. Without it, he might well have to drop out of college and that would mean living like he was for the rest of his life.

"How much are we talking about here?" He wondered if she could hear the distaste in his voice.

"For accompanying me to Connecticut and pretending to be my boyfriend, I will pay you the sum of ten thousand dollars."

"Ten thousand..." Max mouthed in silence. His eyes widened.

"And if I get my ex-boyfriend back, I will pay you enough to cover your tuition fees for the rest of this school year. That's the spring and summer semesters."

Max blinked in astonishment.

"What you spend it on is your business, but that's the deal."

Max's mind was spinning. With both remaining semesters paid up, and an additional ten thousand, he could afford to buy new books, only work one job and study enough to pull his grades up. He might even be able to afford a second hand notebook computer. Maybe even a cheap printer, too.

"Additionally," she had taken his silence as indecision. "I will set you up an account at a store so can buy some new, fashionable clothes, and I'll give you some money to buy you some meals so that you don't look so...anemic."

"You said we're going Connecticut. Is this where you live or something?"

"No," Elizabeth shook her head. "My friends and I are going there for Christmas. As my 'boyfriend', you will be accompanying. It's the twelfth of December now. We leave on the nineteenth. That gives us one week to prepare, and for you to make yourself look like someone I might be associated with. I have had these contracts drawn up." She slid two copies across the table. "Naturally, you will want to read them first."

Max nodded, picking one of them up and starting to read.

"We'll have to spend some time together," she made it sound like it would be pure torture for her. "We have to make sure that you know enough about me to fool Maria. She'll give you the third degree, I'm afraid. But if you can fool her into believing that you are my attentive boyfriend, everyone else will believe it too."

"And if I fail?"

"Then I get totally humiliated and you only get ten thousand dollars."

"That, I would like to see," Max smirked.

Elizabeth glared at him before pressing on.

"It would be easier to be more attractive to Tess... that's his girlfriend, if you pretended to have more money than Sean."

"Sean?"

"My, uh, ex. Act brash and arrogant. Like you have more money than anyone else and you couldn't give a damn."

"Just like you, you mean."

She glared at him again.

"We'll make out that your Dad is in oil or something," she continued. "You just need to make sure that Tess understands that you are interested in her, okay? I don't care if you really do seduce her or not. As long as you break them up."

"Isn't that a little, well... mean?" Max was suffering an attack of conscience. "What if he finds out what you did? Liz, if an ex-girlfriend of mine pulled a stunt like that to get back together with me, I doubt that I could ever really trust them again. I'd just be honest if I were you."

"Well, you're not me," Elizabeth hissed with an angry frown. "And you will restrict yourself to calling me Elizabeth. And how would he find out? You won't tell him because then I would sue your ass, and I sure as hell won't tell him."

"You're the boss," Max shrugged. If Sean was anything like 'Elizabeth', why should he care? They would be well suited to one another.

"That's right," Elizabeth nodded. "I'm the boss. And it would pay you well to remember that."

"Does that mean you get to be on top?"

She didn't bother to answer him, merely giving him a look of disgust.

"Fine," Max shrugged reaching for the contracts. "Just don't come running to me when this thing blows up in your face and you end up flat on your pretty little ass."

"It will be a cold day in hell before I come running to you for any comfort," Elizabeth snarled. "So are you in, or not?"

Like I have a choice, Max considered. I need to pay my rent or I'll lose my flat. It may not be much but it is mine.

"Can you let me have an advance so that I can pay my rent? I really do need a place to live when I come home."

"How much do you need?" she rolled her eyes. "Another ten? Twenty? How much does a cardboard box in an alleyway run these days?"

"I owe a hundred and fifty bucks."

Elizabeth shook her head.

"Fine," she rubbed her temples. "I'll pay your goddamned rent, too. Now are you in or do I need to find another loser?"

"You really need to sharpen your people skills," Max smirked as he signed both contracts.

"Money talks," Elizabeth shrugged, waving Serena over. "So I don't have to. This is my friend, Serena."

"We've met," Max gave her a polite nod.

"Serena will be our witness."

"Meet me here every night at eight," Elizabeth told him while Serena signed the contract. "I've prepared you sheets of information about me for you to study. You, uh... you can fill me in on your existence as best you can. It's probably better if we make it all up in any case."

Have yourself a merry little Christmas.
Let your heart be light,
From now on our troubles
Will be out of sight.

Have yourself a merry little Christmas,
Make the Yuletide gay,
From now on our troubles
Will be miles away.

Here we are as in olden days,
Happy golden days of yore,
Faithful friends who are dear to us
Gather near to us once more.

Through the years
We all will be together
If the Fates allow,
Hang a shining star
Upon the highest bough,
And have yourself
A merry little Christmas now.

Here we are as in olden days,
Happy golden days of yore,
Faithful friends who are dear to us
Gather near to us once more.

Through the years
We all will be together
If the Fates allow,
Hang a shining star
Upon the highest bough,
And have yourself
A merry little Christmas now.

Elizabeth Parker 101

Max had found an all night grocery store and had bought enough nonperishable food to last him until the end of the week. He had also bought himself a cheap microwave oven and a ready meal. After all, he had decided, these meals were every bit as good as haute cuisine, and probably more nourishing. Better yet, it was a fraction of the price. He could fatten himself up and save money for later at the same time. When he returned from his... 'job' in Connecticut, he planned to buy a small refrigerator. But for now, buying his perishable foods daily would have to suffice.

A steaming cup of coffee, complete with milk and sugar sat to one side of him. He held the plastic plate below his chin and was reading the A4 sheets of paper Elizabeth had given him while he ate the best meal he had eaten in ages.

"Where do you suppose she found the time to type all this up?" he wondered out loud as he checked how many pages she had printed.

It was all there. Elizabeth's life. From the time she was four and a riding accident left a scar above her eye until she sat in the library, discussing the terms of his employment with her.

"Listen to this, Mickey," Max looked over to the rat who was nibbling at a piece of cheese. Max had not known what else to give him. "She was chauffeured to kindergarten, chauffeured to grade school, chauffeured to high school. What else? Oh yeah. She also had tutors during the weekends and holidays. Jeez. This girl really needs to get a life."

Max continued to read in silence.

"Uh oh, Mickey," Max looked over and grinned. "She like cats. Better make sure she doesn't visit us very often, huh? I mean, she might decide to move in with us and bring a pet cat with her." Max looked around the room. "Somehow, I don't think that will be a problem. Do you? Oh, wait! Listen to this. There is justice in the world. She's allergic to them." Max started to chuckle.

His eyes scanned more of the pages including the one that described her friends.

"The more I read the less I like," he shook his head.

Max finished his meal and reached over to drop the empty plastic plate that he had licked clean into the bag. He picked up the cup of coffee and took a deep swallow, savoring the taste, even if it was only instant.

"I really don't want to do this, you know," he leaned back in his old chair and held the cup to his chest. "Do you even know how unsavory I find the whole deal? This Elizabeth Parker is a real piece of work. She's an arrogant, insufferable snob. A complete bitch. If it weren't for the fact that I really need the money, I'd tell her to stick her job."

Finishing his coffee, he rose and crossed to the sink where he rinsed the cup out. Max looked up at nothing in particular.

"She's a pretty good looking bitch, though."

Max Evans 101

"He's got to be just about the most shallow person I have ever had the misfortune to meet!" Elizabeth shook her head at Serena who was sitting on Elizabeth's sofa. "If it wasn't for the fact that I need someone to help me and he's the only half decent guy available, I would tell him to take a running jump off the nearest cliff. Listen to this. He grew up with his mom and stepdad in Roswell, New Mexico. Can you believe that? Roswell, home of the freaking aliens!"

"Maybe he is one," Serena laughed. "Maybe he was in that crash, yeah.? Back in '47. And like... he was in these stasis pods until he hatched out a few years ago and he's been hiding in plain sight for all these years." She turned to face Elizabeth. "Maybe he's planning to abduct you and perform all these wild experiments on you."

"You are so not helping," Elizabeth rolled her eyes. "Let's see. He went to West Roswell high, dated the same girl all through high school until he caught her with a soldier from the nearby base." She shook her head. "Boo hoo. Loser. Oh, and that was two days before Prom. So he didn't go. God, this guy is such a... loser. Why does he even have to tell me that? It's not like I'm really interested. What else. Oh yeah, he's not much into sports but likes to keep fit. His best friend is someone called Mickey." She looked up. "Mickey? What kind of name is Mickey? He's always wanted to go into Law and as Harvard is the best place to go, here he is. He hasn't got a full scholarship and has to take on any jobs he can to make ends meet. Can you believe this shit? I can't tell everyone that. They'll all think I'm a worse loser than he is."

"So tell them half truths," Serena rose and crossed to sit beside Elizabeth at the table. "He went to an academy in Roswell. Private school or something. The girlfriend dumped him for an officer. Heck, he might have been an officer, right? A soldier could be anything. A General, even. Right? And he really is at Harvard studying Law. That's all you have to say. Can't get more impressive than that, right? Besides, the more mysterious you make him, the more attractive he'll be to this Tess girl, right? I mean, the big picture is that you want Tess to make a play for this guy so that you can step in and comfort Sean. Right?

"Right," Elizabeth nodded, feeling better already.

It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas
Ev'rywhere you go
Take a look in the five-and-ten,
Glistening once again
With candy canes and silver lanes aglow

It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas
Toys in ev'ry store
But the prettiest sight to see
is the holly that will be
On your own front door

A pair of hopalong boots and a pistol that shoots
Is the wish of Barney and Ben
Dolls that will talk and will go for a walk
Is the hope of Janice and Jen
And Mom and Dad can hardly wait for school to start again

It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas
Ev'rywhere you go
There's a tree in the Grand Hotel,
One in the park as well
The sturdy kind that doesn't mind the snow

It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas
Soon the bells will start
And the thing that will make them ring
Is the carol that you sing
Right within your heart

Last Christmas - Part 3

Post by WR »

Hi everyone!

Thank you for continuing to read my story in spitr of how I portray Liz. But you surely know me by now, right?

It makes a change. Most stories Make Max the bad guy. But perhaps Liz appears bitchy because she has her mind fixed so firmly on her goal that she is oblivious to all that surrounds her.

(BTW, smokie, yes, I noticed. :) )

So... lets just get on with it, right?

:)

Day 1 - December 19th

Bon Voyage

As he had been instructed, at ten minutes to nine o'clock, Max was waiting outside of the little bookstore and news vendor right on the main road through Harvard square. He could hardly believe the value of the clothing he was wearing right now. The cost would have kept him well fed for the rest of the scholastic year.

His jeans were 'True Religion', costing nearly two hundred and twenty dollars a pair! He had 'Zegna' and 'Armani' shirts, a 'Dolce & Gabbana' jacket, 'Cole Hann' loafers and an assortment of sweaters and sweatshirts from 'Diesel', 'Prada' and 'Gucci'. Most of his other clothing was bought from 'The Gap', but he had been forced to buy a 'Bally' ski jacket that he honestly believed was no warmer than the one on special at 'Wal-Mart'. Around his wrist, he wore a Tag Heuer watch. He drew the line at a new cell phone. He did not want to be at Elizabeth Parker's beck and call twenty-four-seven.

The clothing that he was not currently wearing was neatly packed in a stout 'Gucci' suitcase that stood on the ground at his side. All of it was courtesy of Elizabeth, who stated that no boyfriend of hers dresses from the local thrift store. Max had every intention of selling everything that she had bought him. His education was far more important than looking good while he starved.

The black BMW X5 pulled up at the side of the road, stopping just in front of him. Max stood and coolly watched Elizabeth who remained seated behind the steering wheel. After a few seconds of inactivity, she started to wave her hands in exasperation. The electric window slid down.

"Are you getting in or do you plan on just standing there?"

"Aren't you going to see to my luggage?" he raised his eyebrows.

"Put it in the back!" she snapped.

"You mean, you expect me to do this myself?" he pulled a look of disbelief.

"Just shove it in the back you freaking moron! We have a long drive ahead of us."

Max picked up his case and moved to the back of the car. Opening the rear door, he slid his case next to Elizabeth's. He closed the door and moved to the passenger side, climbing on board. When he was buckled up, Elizabeth indicated and pulled out into the traffic.

"What the hell kind of stunt was that?" she demanded, glaring at him.

"What was wrong with it?" he looked confused. "Too arrogant? Or not arrogant enough?"

"Asshole," she spat.

"What?" he shrugged. "Isn't that how you rich and famous behave? Like everyone has to do what you want or suffer the consequences?"

Elizabeth chose not to answer, concentrating instead on working her way through the traffic.

Max watched as the familiar streets passed by. They headed west on Massachusetts Avenue toward Dunster Street. Turning left on Dunster, they turned left again onto Mt Auburn Road. After a right onto Dewolf Street, a left onto Memorial Drive, and another right onto Western Avenue, they turned left onto Soldiers Field Road. They soon merged onto the Massachusetts' Turnpike and Max saw the sign for New York. He slid forward in his seat, folded his arms across his chest and closed his eyes.

"What's my favorite ice cream?" Elizabeth suddenly snapped at him.

"What?" Max looked at her through narrowed eyes.

"My favorite ice cream. What is it?"

"Vanilla," he shrugged. "Why?"

"I'm testing you," she shook her head. "Because Maria's going to do the same thing. Where did we meet?"

"The Science Library," Max sighed, laying his head back against the restraint. "I was doing some research on forensics for my Law thesis and we bumped into one another."

"Where was our first date?"

"MacDonald's," Max snorted. He cast a sideways glance and saw the glare she was throwing him. "Ciao Bella on Newbury Street," he intoned.

"What was my most embarrassing moment when I was a child?"

"A car backfired when you were in a diner. You thought it was a gun and fell over. A ketchup bottle broke and spilled all over you, making you believe you were shot." He sounded bored.

"Why didn't we use your car?"

"Because I don't need one in Boston. Mine's at home in New Mexico."

"What flowers do you buy me?"

"White roses."

"What was the name of my pony?"

"Pebbles. You named her from the Flintstones family because you loved that show and you thought Pebbles was so sweet."

He gave a grin to himself.

"In junior high, you won a state wide Science Fair with an entry about cellular structure and you carried your trophy everywhere for a month. You don't like sports although you can ski quite well and you play tennis okay. You love your friends dearly and friendship is the most important thing to you. Except Tess's, it seems."

He smirked. Elizabeth simply glared at him. Again.

"Relax, Liz," he chuckled.

"Elizabeth," she spat. "Not Liz. Elizabeth. Everyone calls me Elizabeth."

"I am actually quite good at learning stuff, okay?" he ignored her. "I have everything you wrote down pat. The only thing that will give us away is how we behave around one another."

"No one will believe we're a couple," she shook her head. "You're too much of an asshole for me to even have considered dating you."

"That's what makes us such a great couple then," Max laughed. "I'm an asshole and you have your head shoved up yours."

The car fell silent, apart from the drone of the engine and the old Christmas songs being played on the radio.

"Mind if I ask a question?" Max broke the silence.

"You can ask," Elizabeth shrugged.

"What makes this Sean so special?"

She looked at him, as though studying him and turned back to concentrate on the road.

"Stick to what you're supposed to know."

"I was only asking."

"You don't need to know anything about Sean, okay? Sean is not your concern. You just do what you're being paid to do and we will get along fine. As long as you don't keep on acting like a prick."

"If I am supposed to act like I'm rich," he shrugged, "I have to base it on someone."

She gave him another glare.

The car fell silent again. After they merged onto the 'I-84', Elizabeth pulled over into a small diner for a cup of coffee and a comfort break. Once back in the car, Elizabeth gave Max a folder containing some A4 sized photographs.

"That's Maria," Liz told him while he studied the photograph of a young woman with long blond hair and green eyes. "Maria DeLuca. She's my best friend in the whole world."

"DeLuca? As in Sean DeLuca? Brother and sister?"

"She's his cousin," Elizabeth shook her head. "Their fathers run DeLuca Construction."

"Maria and I grew up together." Elizabeth continued. "We've known each other since we were babies. We would do anything for each other and we will protect each other to the death."

Max nodded and put the photo to the back of the pile.

"That's Michael. Michael Guerin, Maria's boyfriend. I don't know a whole lot about him, really, except that he and Maria fight a lot of the time but they both seem to enjoy it. I mean, verbally, not... I honestly don't think he would ever hurt her. They started dating last spring break. They both go to Princeton."

Max moved to the next photo.

"Alex Whitman," she smiled. "He's like an honorary girlfriend."

Max snorted.

"Don't let that fool you. Alex is tougher than he looks. Besides, he's got Sean and Jesse to back him up. He goes to MIT and he's a whiz at computers. He can probably hack in and change all your grades on you if you cross him."

"Yeah, right," Max rolled his eyes. "Do you even know how hard that is? He needs access to usernames and passwords, ones with specific privileges. Do you know how well the Harvard computers are protected? It's not as easy as these geeks like to make out, okay? You watch and believe way too much TV."

"He was like an honorary girlfriend," she ignored him. "When he was younger, he even joined in on some of our sleep-overs. Until the guys started to tease him, but they were just jealous. The next photo is Isabel Philips, Alex's girlfriend. She's actually at NYU, doing some business course or something. I don't know much about her because Isabel and I don't exactly get along. She thinks I'm after Alex."

"Like you would ever consider trying to steal someone's boyfriend," Max gave a soft snort.

Elizabeth chose to continue past his remark.

"Vicky Delany," she nodded at the next photo. "She was always hanging out with Jesse but nothing ever really happened between them. I get on okay with her but never really had much to do with her. She's really into sports. Which is why she dates Kyle Valenti. All I know about him is that he's a jock. I think he's at Cornell with Vicky on a baseball scholarship or something."

Max past moved past the next photo.

"Jesse Ramirez," Elizabeth nodded. "Sean's best friend. They did almost everything together. And they are very competitive, too. They always have to beat each other at everything. I kind of feel uncomfortable around Jesse 'cause he's hit on me a few times. Especially last year at Connecticut. Even though he had his girlfriend there. That's Courtney. Courtney Vance. She's studying psychology at University of Pennsylvania. That's where Jesse goes, too. Which brings us to..."

"Sean DeLuca," Max looked at the cherub like face of the young man Elizabeth wanted to win. He had short, curly hair.

"Yeah," Elizabeth nodded. "He goes to Yale. He studies Sociology."

"Sociology?" Max gave a chuckle. "A worthwhile profession."

"Shut up. You're not paid to judge him. He doesn't need to worry about what he does. One day, he's going to be heading up the biggest construction company on the East Coast. Who cares what degree he has?"

"So this must be Tess," Max was looking at the petite blonde. "She's quite a looker."

"If you like that sort of thing," Elizabeth's voice was cold and tight.

"Well, lucky for you," Max grinned at her. "I do. Maybe this won't be so bad after all."

"She should be easy to seduce. She loves being the center of attention. All you have to do is fawn all over her and she should be putty in you hands."

"Sounds like you thought this through."

"You have to have a plan," Elizabeth nodded.

"But in your case, you have to get a life."

"Look!" she barked. "You don't like me. I get it. And it's okay. As long as you can convince the others that you do, that's all that matters. And I don't like you either, okay? In fact, I positively abhor you. So now we both know where we stand, let's just concentrate on the task in hand rather than trying to score points off one another. Tess doesn't ski. That should help 'cause I don't expect that you can either. That means you can spend quality time with her. I'm sure that you at least know how to turn on 'some' charm. You did have a girlfriend, once, right? So turn it on and flirt with her when she's away from Sean.

Rockin' around the Christmas tree
At the Christmas party hop,
Mistletoe hung where you can see,
Every couple tries to stop,
Rockin' around the Christmas tree,
Let the Christmas spirit ring,
Later we'll have some pumpkin pie,
And we'll do some caroling.

You will get a sentimental feeling when you hear,
Voices singing, "Let's be jolly,
Deck the halls with boughs of holly",
Rockin' around the Christmas tree,
Have a happy holiday,
Everyone dancin' merrily,
In the new old-fashioned way.

Rockin' around the Christmas tree,

No Place Like Home

Almost three hours, and one hundred and forty miles later, Liz turned into Mohawk Mountain Road. She pulled the car over to the side of the road.

"We'll change here," she told Max. "That way, we can pretend that you drove us here, which is what any decent boyfriend would do."

They changed places with Max now sitting behind the steering wheel. He pulled out onto the road and followed Elizabeth's instructions as she guided him along the snow laden roads to the large ski lodge he would be sharing with her and her friends.

"That's the main town over there," Liz pointed up a road they had just passed. "It will be full of festive lights, shoppers and things. It's quite a fun place with its cafés, restaurants, bars and clubs. The main thoroughfare is pedestrianized which makes it feel like a smaller town. The actual ski resort is over there," she pointed to the left of the where the town was hidden by some hills. "You want to take this left."

At the end of a long lane, a small cluster of large ski lodges appeared. There were perhaps half a dozen of them, all fairly substantial.

"That one there," Elizabeth pointed. "The one on its own at the end of the lane."

Max nodded and guided the car along the icy road and up the driveway, already filled with an assortment of expensive vehicles.

"This is it," Elizabeth took a deep breath. "Please don't let me down."

"Relax," Max nodded.

"Just stick to the contract. Understand?"

As they climbed from the car, A medium built blonde haired young woman came hurtling from the building. Max recognized Maria immediately.

"Elizabeth!" she cried seconds before she threw herself into the brunette's arms.

How they both managed to remain on their feet, especially on the compacted snow, Max had no idea.

"So," Maria leaned back and looked from Elizabeth to Max. "This is Max, huh?"

Under her studious eye, Max realized that he would indeed have to work hard if he was to keep his end of the bargain and convince Maria that he was Elizabeth's boyfriend.

"Yeah," Elizabeth nodded, smiling at Max as he stepped next to her and wrapped an arm affectionately around her waist. "Maria, this is Max. Max, this is my best friend, Maria DeLuca."

"I'm pleased to finally meet you, Maria," Max smiled and extended his hand. "Liz has told me so much about you."

"Uh..." Maria frowned, taking his hand. "Yeah. Though she hasn't told me so much about you." She turned to her friend. "Liz?" she mouthed frowning.

Elizabeth shrugged.

More people came out from the house. Max recognized every one of them as Elizabeth introduced them. He took an instant liking to Michael and Kyle. Both seemed pretty laid back about everything. Alex seemed as suspicious of him as Maria. The girls, Isabel, Vicky and Courtney all greeted him cordially and seemed prepared to give him a chance. Jesse seemed a little on the hostile side while Sean just kept smirking arrogantly at him. When the two shook hands, Sean applied as much pressure as he could. Max squeezed back and gave him a smirk when he saw him wince with pain.

A small, curly bold young woman appeared from behind the crowd.

"And this is Tess," Sean introduced her. He wrapped both arms around her, placing one hand over her breast giving it a blatant squeeze. He moved in and gave her a short but deep open mouthed kiss. "Hot stuff, isn't she?"

"Hey," Max nodded to her.

"Come on," Sean pulled Tess around to face the house. "Let's get inside. It's fucking freezing out here?"

Share and Share Alike

With their arms linked together, Maria, talking at what sounded to Max like a hundred words a minute, led her best friend, Elizabeth into the house. Max, carrying both his and Elizabeth's suitcases followed behind, wondering how anyone could understand a word she said. He felt a pang of pity for Michael, whom, Max noticed, had disappeared. He followed the two girls into the large hallway and up the stairs. Maria opened a door to one of the rooms and walked in. Elizabeth followed, so Max did too.

"This is your room," Maria walked to the sliding doors and opened them onto a small balcony. She turned to face Elizabeth. "So tell me. How is the shopping in Boston?"

While the two girls continued to talk, Max took in the room. There were two sets of wardrobes, two chests of drawers and a desk. Most prominent though, was the double bed. Max looked at it, glanced at Elizabeth who was still engrossed in her conversation with Maria and shrugged. He lifted the two cases up onto the bed. There was another door behind which Max discovered a private en-suit bathroom. They had a bath with a shower head, a sink and a toilet. When he returned, Maria was still talking; Elizabeth was still listening.

"Maria," Max interrupted them. Taking her elbow, Max started to guide her to the door. "You can continue your discussion later, okay? In the meantime, can you give us a minute?"

"Oh," Maria nodded. "Uh, right. Yeah." She turned back to Elizabeth. "I'll, uhm... make some coffee. Just how you like it."

When he was sure that she was gone, Max closed the door and turned to face Elizabeth.

"You never warned me about that," he looked a little stunned.

"Yeah, sorry." Elizabeth chuckled. "Maria can be a bit..."

"Verbose?"

"Uh huh," she nodded.

"By the way," he frowned. "That's something you forgot to tell me. How do you like your coffee?"

"Oh," Elizabeth's eyes widened. "Sorry, I forgot. I like it made with half hot milk and a shot of vanilla. And not instant. Never instant."

"Got it," Max confirmed. "Hurts, doesn't it?"

"What does," Elizabeth tried to pretend she had no idea what he meant.

"I used to see my ex with her new guy all the time. It never got any easier."

"Is that why you left Roswell?" she turned to face him.

"Yeah," Max sighed. "Well, that and getting in to Harvard."

Elizabeth gave him a weak smile. Then she looked at the bed.

"Okay," the hardness returned to her voice. "Just keep your mind on the job, got it?"

"Got it," he shrugged with a smirk. "And just so you know?" He saw her glance at the sleeping arrangements. "I am not sleeping on the floor."

"Yes you are," she braced her hands on her hips and glared at him defiantly.

"Not a chance, sweetheart," he grinned. "I'm sleeping in the bed. If you can't handle that, sleep on the floor yourself."

"You're not sleeping with me and that's..."

"Look, Princess," he turned on her. "If you were the last female on this planet, I would become a monk."

"Ass hole," Elizabeth spat.

"Kiss it," Max laughed.

They exchanged hard looks before Max started to smirk.

"Oh yeah. Everyone is going to believe we're a couple all right. You go talk to your friend. I'll unpack my stuff and then take a look around the cabin."

Tour of Duty

After he put away his expensive new clothes, Max slid his empty suitcase under the bed, and stepped out onto the balcony to look at the view. Their room was to the front of the cabin. He looked across the yards of the other cabins and followed the darker streak of the lane they had traveled along. The nearby mountains were covered with snow, as were the trees that clung to the sides of the mountains. It was a classic Christmas card scene. All he needed was a sleigh with reindeer pulling it to appear. To one side, nestled between two large hills, Max could see lights twinkling in the distance. Turning indoors, he left his room. The hallway had three doors on one side and three on the other. There were the six bedrooms. At either end of the hallway were two doors. Both of these were additional bathrooms. Max then headed for the stairs.

The ground floor was all open plan. There was a living room, a dining room, and a kitchen. In the living room, Sean was sitting in the middle of a sofa playing Nintendo on a huge plasma screen TV. There was no sign of anyone else. There were two other sofas and a couple of arm chairs. Large doorways led out to wooden decking. It held wooden tables, chairs and what appeared to be a hot tub. Everything was covered with a blanket of snow. The dining room was ringed with elegant sideboards while a huge tale and twelve chairs sat in the middle. The kitchen was large and well appointed with a huge refrigeration unit, a massive cooking range, and all the labor saving devices he could think of. Elizabeth and Maria were sitting at a breakfast bar drinking hot coffee and talking. Max noticed that there wasn't a coffee for him.

Following some stairs that led down, Max made an exciting discovery. Next to the garage was a small indoor swimming pool. There were two doors from the poolside, one of which led into a steam room. Swimming in the pool in a blue bikini was the small curvaceous blond that Sean had been all over. Tess.

Max couldn't help admiring her.

"Hi," she smiled as she swam the length toward him. "Max, right?"

"Hey," he gave a little wave. "Yeah. Max Evans. Tess, right?"

"Cool place, huh?" she paused at the pools edge and looked up at him.

"Yeah," he nodded, unable to stop himself from looking down her cleavage. "Pretty awesome."

"So you're here with Elizabeth, huh?"

"Yeah," Max gave a smile.

"Cool," she grinned.

"And you're uh, with Sean, right?"

"Yeah," she pushed herself back and started to swim a length backstroke. "We'll have been together one year on Christmas Day. How long have you and Elizabeth been together?"

"Since, uhm... end of October."

"So you're looking forward to your first Christmas together?"

"Yeah," Max nodded as she flipped over and started to breast stroke on her way back. "I am. I think it's going to be... interesting."

"Do you ski, Max?" She had reached the edge closest to him again and stopped.

"Not really," he smirked.

"Why ever not?" Tess frowned.

"I grew up in the desert," he laughed. "I understand that a prime ingredient for skiing is snow."

"Yeah," Tess laughed. "That helps. They have some good ski schools here. Of course, everyone else can ski so you'll probably spend some time on your own. Sorry."

"That's okay. I kind of figured that."

"Mind you, I don't think Elizabeth would leave you to fend for yourself. She doesn't strike me as being that kind of person."

"Do you ski?"

"Me?" Tess rolled her eyes. "No. I tried last year but hated it. I prefer to wander around the shopping mall in town. So uh, Max? Did you learn to swim in the desert or was there no water either?"

"We had water," Max grinned. "I can swim. My suit's upstairs though."

"Good. It will be fun to have someone else to talk to when I do my laps. The only people who ever venture down here is you, me and Kyle," she motioned toward the pool side door.

Max peered through the window to see Kyle working out at a serious looking weight machine.

"I'll, uh," Max turned to face her, "...go get changed."

"Damn, but it's so good to see you, Chica," Maria smiled at her friend.

They were sitting at the breakfast bar drinking coffee. The aroma of vanilla filled the air.

"Yeah," Elizabeth grinned back. "I've really missed you, too. We have a ton of catching up to do."

"That's right, missy," Maria nodded. "And talking of catching up, you can start by spilling the beans on Mr. Mysterious."

"What can I say?" Elizabeth shrugged, staring down into her coffee. "He's... he's just great."

"So how did you meet?" Maria's eyes narrowed.

"I was in the Science library one evening," Elizabeth recited the story that she had cooked up. "He came in doing some research and... I guess it was like, love at first sight."

"I thought you said he was studying law?"

"He is," Elizabeth nodded. "But he was doing part of his thesis on forensic science or something. Anyway, we started talking and the next thing you know... here we are."

"So," Maria peered sagely, "you're over Sean?"

"Oh, yeah," Elizabeth nodded with perhaps a little too much enthusiasm. "Definitely so over him."

"Good," Maria smiled.

She clearly didn't believe her.

Here comes Santa Claus,
Here comes Santa Claus,
Right down Santa Claus Lane,
Vixen and Blitzen and all his reindeer
Pullin' on the reins.
Bells are ringing, children singing,
All is merry and bright.
Hang up your stockings and say your prayers,
'Cause Santa Claus is comin' to town.

Here comes Santa Claus,
Here comes Santa Claus,
Right down Santa Claus Lane,
He's got a bag that's filled with toys
For the boys and girls again.
Hear those sleigh bells jingle jangle,
Oh what a beautiful sight,
Jump into bed, cover up your head,
'Cause Santa Claus is comin' to town.

Here comes Santa Claus,
Here comes Santa Claus,
Right down Santa Claus Lane,
He doesn't care if you're rich or poor
He'll love you just the same
Santa knows that we're God's children
That makes everything right
Fill your hearts with Christmas cheer
'Cause Santa's comin' to town!

Dangerous Liaisons

"So what do you guys think of this Max?" Maria asked the occupants of the car.

The whole gang had arrived only that morning, and Maria, Michael, Alex and Isabel had volunteered to make the run into town to stock up on groceries.

"Seems okay," Michael shrugged. "Decent, level headed. But it's too early to tell."

"I agree with Michael," Isabel called from the back seat."

"What's up, Maria?" Alex leaned forward. "Is your 'radar' going off?"

"Yeah," she nodded. "Elizabeth told me she was over Sean."

"It has been a year," Isabel pointed out. "And Sean's been with Tess all that time. I mean, Sean and Elizabeth dated for what? How long was it?"

"Technically, they never dated," Maria shook her head. "But she's always had a crush on him."

"Coming to the realization that someone doesn't love you can be quite an epiphany," Isabel continued.

"I'm not convinced about him," Maria shook her head. "Elizabeth does not have that glow of happiness. I think that this Max guy is all wrong for her... And worse, I think he's using her."

"Oh, oh," Michael rolled his eyes.

"What do you want us to do?" Alex chuckled at Michael's antics.

"Just keep an eye on him. I really think something is wrong."

"Maria," Michael continued. "Don't you think that this is none of our business?"

"Look, Michael," Maria snapped. "She's my best friend. I worry about her, okay?"

"Me too," Alex nodded.

"She's a big girl now," Michael shook his head. "She can look after herself."

"No, listen," Maria would not give up. "There's something not right about those two. They just don't look like a couple to me, okay? I don't think they even look good together. Trust me."

"I don't think Elizabeth would agree with you," Isabel sat back.

"He has some hold over her," Maria narrowed her eyes. "And this Max Evans is using Elizabeth to get what he wants. Probably money."

After waving her friends off, Elizabeth waited till the car had disappeared from view before she went back into the cabin and closed the door behind her. She wandered into the living room where Sean was sitting, still playing his Nintendo game.

"Hey, Sean," Liz tried to act casual as she wandered in and sat on the sofa next to him.

"Elizabeth," his eyes never left the bloodshed that was unfolding on the screen. "It's been a while."

"Uh, yeah," she nodded. "Since the summer, actually."

"So how's school going?"

"Good, good," Elizabeth was watching Sean rather than the game. "You?"

"So so," he shrugged. "It's not like I have to try too hard, is it?"

"No, I suppose not," she gave a soft smile. "So where's uhm, Tess?"

"Tess couldn't resist the pool. She's probably down there now." He cast a sideways glance. "So this Max seems a bit of a dork. Why'd you take up with him?"

"No, no." she shook her head. "He's great, you know? And a fantastic lover."

She studied his face carefully, watching for any sign of jealousy. Sean simply shrugged.

Elizabeth was sitting on the bed leafing through a magazine when Max entered the room. He was wearing a damp pair of Bermuda short; his hair was wet and he had a damp towel looped over his shoulders.

"Where have you been?" she demanded, glaring at him.

Max looked at her with a look of incredulity.

"I was making snowmen on the top of Mount St. Helens, actually," he shook his head.

"Okay, so you were in the pool," Elizabeth rolled her eyes. "Sarcasm so does not become you."

"Bite me," Max shrugged.

"Sean said Tess was in the pool, too."

"Yeah, we met," he smirked. "She invited me to join her."

"Good!" Elizabeth broke into a huge grin. "She must be attracted to you, then. Did you get anywhere with her?"

"Right," Max shook his head. "Like I'm going to jump her within five minutes of meeting her. I don't know what kind of people you're used to, Parker, but I'm not like that. In fact, I don't even like doing this at all, so you are going to have to be patient."

"Well, just hurry up," she huffed. "I can't bear to see those two all lovey dovey, okay? It makes me sick."

"I take it you spoke with Sean and didn't get the signals you wanted?"

"That's none of your business," she hid herself behind her magazine.

Slap Shot

After Maria and the others returned with the groceries, the women all descended upon the kitchen to put everything away and prepare for the evening meal. The six young men all gathered in the lounge.

"Do you guys play Hockey?" Sean looked up from his game console and looked at the three new comers.

"Sure," Kyle nodded.

"Yeah," Michael shrugged.

"Uh, no," Max shook his head. "But I've rollerbladed. Is that the same?"

"Close enough," Sean gave an evil grin. "Come on. Let's go."

"I don't have any skates," Max pointed out.

"There are spares in the basement. People leave stuff behind," Alex pointed at the door. "And we have plenty of spare gear. Come on, the rink's out back."

Down in the basement they managed to find enough pads and skates to play a friendly game of hockey. Although they wore different colored shirts, Sean, Jesse and Alex all wore matching black shirts with a blazing white emblem on the front.

"Skulls?" Max read the matching logo.

"Are these guys for real?" Michael muttered softly.

"I hear ya," Kyle nodded. "Max, they're gonna pick on you. Skating on ice is kinda different than rollerblades, but apart from stopping, the principle's the same. Spend the first five minutes or so finding your balance. Get used to the skates. Watch us... and them, till you get the idea of using a stick. I'm sure you'll pick it up."

They followed the 'Skulls' out through the back door of the house and through the back yard. Behind the houses, they found a small rink, complete with boards and goal nets. As predicted, Max was shaky on the ice and the 'Skulls' took great delight in making his life difficult by checking him into the boards or knocking him over every chance they got. By the time Max was moving with some confidence, the 'Skulls had raced into a three zero lead.

Feeling able to add to his team's fortunes, Max called for the puck. Picking up Michael's pass, he started to move toward the Skull's goal. Sean flew in and with his stick raised across his chest, he bowled into Max, driving him into the boards.

"Friendly game," Michael helped Max back up. "That was an illegal move if ever I saw one."

"Yeah," Max nodded. "But I know the rules now."

Moments later, Sean picked up the puck close to his own goal and was flying up the rink. Max moved toward him. Seeing another chance to humiliate him, Sean started to grin. The grin faded when Max checked him, shoulder to shoulder, so hard that Sean flipped over the boards into the snow bank on the other side. Taking the puck with him, Max headed for the goal. Alex raced in, fully intent on taking Max out. A shower of ice, Max stopped and Alex whizzed past him, colliding with the boards. With a perfect slap shot, Max sent the puck flying into the net.

An Audience With...

Once all of the groceries were stored away in their allocated places, the girls took their coffee's upstairs to the balcony at the back of the house. From there, they had a good view of the hockey game.

"Sean's looking good, as usual," Vicky pointed out with a smirk. "You should have seen him drop Max a few moments ago."

"Yeah," Isabel nodded. "But Max just sent him over the boards and brushed Alex aside like he wasn't even there. Scored too. Not bad considering he was moving around like Bambi out there a few minutes ago."

"Max is pretty fit," Tess grinned. "Real buff."

Everyone turned to stare at her.

"How do you know?" Elizabeth thought the blonde had tripped herself up.

"Yeah," Maria's suspicions were roused. Had Max tried something with Sean's girlfriend?

"He came swimming earlier. When you guys went shopping. A real fit bod."

"Lucky Elizabeth," Courtney giggled. "Look at him. He just took a check from Jesse like it never happened."

Just then, Michael took a pass from Max and scored another goal. The score was now three to two.

"Something tells me the Skulls have met someone better than them," Vicky shook her head. "It's all one way traffic now."

"They'll all be in a bad mood tonight, then," Isabel shook her head.

"Only if they lose," Maria pointed out.

Just then, Kyle scored a goal. After a quick consultation, the Skulls decided that calling the game a tie was infinitely better to crawling off the ice with their tails between their legs. The six players headed for the house.

After Dinner Mint

Between them, the ladies of the group had prepared a delicious meal. Hungry from their exertions, the young men polished their plates clean. Afterwards, the boys, with the exception of Sean, cleared away the table and cleaned the kitchen, leaving the plates in the dishwasher while the girls congregated in the living room with a few glasses of wine.

The evening was spent quietly. A few couples played monopoly while others watched television. At around nine o'clock, Sean and Tess rose.

"We're going into town," Sean told them. "We're going to try out that new club. Anyone interested?"

Elizabeth moved in her chair, considering the benefits of going with them. But in the end decided that there might be no opportunity for her to be alone with Sean.

As the evening dragged on, Max finally felt the exhaustion of the day and rose from Elizabeth's side.

"Well, it's been a long day," he yawned. "I think I'll turn in now. Good night all."

A few people answered him.

"Coming, Liz?" He held his hand out to her.

"Oh," she seemed surprised. "Uh, yeah." She took his hand and stood up. "Good night all."

Everyone answered her.

Elizabeth looked out into the hallway before she closed the bedroom door on the rest of the house. She turned to Max with her hands on her hips. She clearly had something on her mind.

"What do you think you were playing at?" she demanded. "I don't recall you humiliating Sean in front of his friends being in our arrangement."

"If he can't stand the heat," Max started to laugh. "He should stay out of the kitchen. Oh yeah. He does. He was particularly conspicuous by his absence while the rest of us cleaned up."

"He's going to be the CEO of DeLuca's one day," Elizabeth rolled her eyes. "You do not ask the CEO to clear tables. That's more your line of future employment."

"Nice comeback," Max chuckled.

He took a pair of boxers and a T-shirt from his drawers and disappeared into the bathroom. He emerged five minutes later washed and changed for bed. He found Liz pulling a pillow and a blanket from the bed.

"Making up your bed, are you, Liz?" Max started to put his clothes away.

"No," Elizabeth shook her head. "Yours. I told you. You're sleeping on the floor. And that reminds me. I pay the wages so you will stop calling me Liz and refer to me as 'Elizabeth'."

"Nope," Max shook his head. "That's not in the contract. And neither is sleeping on the floor. I have to flirt with Tess and pretend to be your boyfriend. So you have two choices. Either you shut up and we share, or you find an alternative. Me? I am sleeping on the bed."

"Some gentleman you are," she huffed.

"Who's the one trying to break up a perfectly good relationship with deception because she can't handle her jealousy?"

Taking a small bag from her wardrobe, Elizabeth stormed into the bathroom.

"Want me to scrub your back?" he grinned.

She ignored him.

Max gave a smirk and climbed into bed, turning off the lights. He lay there with his hands folded across his chest looking out of the window, at the full moon that bathed the countryside and the room in its white glow. Elizabeth emerged from the bathroom. She turned the light off behind her and navigated the bedroom in the darkness. As her small body moved across the open window, her body was thrown into silhouette beneath her thin nightdress. She looked so beautiful he decided, his heart beating wildly for a moment. But then she spoke.

"You don't have a single thread of human decency, do you," she accused.

"I've said it once, and I'll say it again," Max sighed. "You're one piece of work, Parker."

Last Christmas - Part 4

Post by WR »

Hi everyone.

A big thank you for your feedback. I love reading how you react to my characters. I guess it's kind of a shock seeing Liz like this, but maybe the explanation for her behaviour is far more simple than many seem to think.

I'm just glad that you are enjoying the story. Talking of which...

Day 2 - December 20th

Rise and Shine

The sun was just starting to angle in to their bedroom when Max woke up. Beside him, Elizabeth was still asleep. Her hair was fanned across the pillow. When she was like this, silent, Max could not dispute that she was quite a looker. A case of beauty really being only skin deep. With a sigh, he rose from his bed, collected a change of clothing and disappeared into the bathroom for his shower.

As he left the bedroom, Elizabeth rolled over to face him.

"Bring me coffee," she ordered.

"It's not in the contract," he smirked. "Being your personal slave."

"Don't you do anything out of kindness," her eyes were narrow and hard.

"To those who deserve it," he nodded. "Didn't you think to ask me nicely instead of ordering me?"

He left the room, closing the door behind him.

Twenty Questions

Max made his way downstairs and into the kitchen. He found himself alone with Elizabeth's best friend. Somehow, Max knew this wasn't going to be good.

"Morning, Maria," he smiled.

"Morning, Max," he saw her eyes narrow. "I'm glad you're an early riser. We haven't really had a chance to get to know one another, have we?"

"I guess not," he shrugged.

"So... what do you think of my best friend?"

"Liz?" Max smiled with affection. "She's pretty unique, huh? I can honestly say, I've never met anyone quite like her."

"Uh huh," Maria nodded. "So how did you two meet?"

"In the Science Library," Max told her the story of half truths that Elizabeth had come up with.

"And you've been dating since the beginning of September, yeah? Not very long, really."

"End of October, actually," Max nodded. "So not even as long as you thought."

"She has some pretty funny tastes, huh?"

"You could say that," he wondered what she really saw in Sean DeLuca or if she was after the money and position he represented.

"What do you think of her favorite ice cream?"

"I can take it or leave it," Max shrugged.

"So you don't really like Rocky Road?" she looked surprised.

"I didn't say that," Max shook his head. "I said that I can take it or leave it. Besides. I thought Liz liked Vanilla best?"

"Oh," Maria nodded. "Sorry. My mind still hasn't quite woken up yet."

"No problem," Max turned to the coffee maker.

"So, What does..."

"Look, Maria," Max interrupted. "I'm sure you think you're being a good friend to Liz, and I'd bet the farm on you having already run the twenty questions game by her already. So if there is something on your mind, why don't you come right out and say it? There's no need for you to tiptoe around whatever issue it is you have with me."

"I'm watching you, Evans," she glared at him. "Elizabeth..." she stressed the name, "...happens to be my longest and bestest friend so I'll be keeping my eye on you. Very closely."

"You do that, Maria," Max smirked. "But will you do me a favor? Will you tell Michael what you're doing? I kind of like your boyfriend and I wouldn't want him getting the wrong idea that there's something going on between us because you keep staring at me."

"You... I..." Maria was momentarily speechless. She threw her hands in the air. "Argh! I don't know what Elizabeth sees in you!"

She left the room in a seething rage. He could follow her progress by listening to her very heavy footsteps. Max winced when he heard the bedroom door slam. With a heavy sigh and a shake of his head, Max made two cups of coffee. One was made with half hot milk and a shot of vanilla essence. Still a little bewildered, he took the cups upstairs to his room.

"There's nothing wrong with it," Max rolled his eyes at Elizabeth's suspicious looks.

"Thank you," Elizabeth issued a barely audible mumble.

Leaving her to drink her coffee, Max went into the bathroom again.

"I'm going for a swim," he told her, giving her the privacy she would need to shower and dress for the day.

"Tess probably won't be up this early," she gave a sullen pout. "They didn't get back till late."

"Believe it or not, Liz," he grinned. "Not everything is about you and your twisted desires."

Muscles

It wasn't to the pool that Max descended the steps into the basement. Instead, he went through the door that led into the Gym. After a fifteen minute session during which he warmed up and stretched his muscles, he started to use the machines to give himself a good workout. He quickly worked up a heavy sweat.

He was on his back doing bench presses when Alex sauntered in.

"Hey," he greeted him with a chirpy smile.

"Hey," Max grunted through his repetition.

"That's not a lot of weight," Alex observed. "I press more than that."

"I'm not after weight," Max didn't let up. "It's the repetition I'm after. Little and often."

"So how did you and Elizabeth meet?"

Max stopped his exercises. Taking a deep breath, he sat up and picked up his towel to wipe the sheen of sweat from his face.

"Did Maria send you?" he asked.

"No," Alex shook his head. "Why?"

"Because she's already asked those questions," Max turned to another machine and set the peg for the weights. "What is this? You guys addicted to playing twenty questions? Is there really so little to do around here?"

"Elizabeth is our friend," he shrugged. His eyes never once left Max. "We all look out for her."

"Well guess what?" Max climbed to his feet. "Liz is a big girl now. She can stand on her own two feet."

"It's Elizabeth."

"Where?" Max looked around.

"No. Her name. It's Elizabeth. She doesn't like being called 'Liz'."

"Did she tell you that?" Max narrowed his eyes.

"Not recently," Alex shook his head. "But when we were kids..."

"Like I said," Max licked his lips. "She's grown up now."

"You listen to me, Evans," Alex clenched his fists. "Elizabeth is my friend and I won't stand around and watch her get used. If you hurt her, you'll have to answer to me."

"Really?" Max raised a single eyebrow. "You? You know what, Alex? That has me really scared." Shaking his head, Max turned away. He stopped and turned back. "Tell me, Alex. Since you are so concerned with Liz's well being, and you have designated yourself as her knight in rusted armor, what did you do to Sean last year?"

"What do you mean?" it was Alex's turn to narrow his eyes.

"When Sean broke her heart last Christmas," Max looked at him. "What did you do to him? Or are you saying that hurting Liz, using her is something only you and your friends are allowed to do?" Or maybe it's just that you think you should be more afraid of Sean than of me. Which considering that I don't have all those years of friendship holding me back is a serious miscalculation."

"I don't like you, Evans," Alex snarled. "The sooner Elizabeth sees what a bastard you are and dumps you, the better."

"The feeling's mutual," Max grinned, knowing that Alex would apply the comment to his first statement.

You know Dasher and Dancer and Prancer and Vixen,
Comet and Cupid and Donder and Blitzen.,
But do you recall?
The most famous reindeer of all?

Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer
Had a very shiny nose,
And if you ever saw it,
You would even say it glows.
All of the other reindeer
Used to laugh and call him names;
They never let poor Rudolph
Join in any reindeer games.

Then one foggy Christmas Eve,
Santa came to say,
Rudolph with your nose so bright,
Won't you guide my sleigh tonight?

Then how the reindeer loved him
As they shouted out with glee,
Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer,
You'll go down in history.

Kindergarten

Using half of the cars at their disposal, the gang drove to the bottom of Mohawk Mountain, parking at one of the parking lots at the base lodge.

"Over there are the ski schools," Elizabeth, holding Max's hand pointed out. "You can rent skis and stuff there, too.

"Hey," Sean called from his car. "You can be a big man for a change. Learning to ski with a bunch of kids."

Max looked at Sean and then turned to look at the ski school where a large group of kids had started to gather.

"See ya, Max," Jesse smirked as he followed Sean and the others.

"If you're as quick to learn skiing as you were with skating," Michael slapped him on the back, "we'll see you up there by lunch time."

Kyle gave him a wink and followed the rest to the lifts. Elizabeth leaned up and gave Max a very fake kiss on his cheek. A flicker of her eyes indicated that he should stick with Tess. He nodded and started to walk toward her while Elizabeth hurrying to catch up with Sean and the others.

"Well, see you later," Tess jumped into the car and started the engine. "I think I'll check out the mall."

And Max found himself on is own, staring up at Mohawk mountain while a couple of dozen skiers were making their way down the various runs. Shaking his head, Max turned to the rental stores.

While looking at the racks of skis, Max wondered if maybe Tess had the right idea. It wouldn't take him long to walk into town and he could spend his day with real people, doing real things. But then something happened to change his mind.

"The kids will be disappointed," he heard a man's voice sigh. "Ms. Hamilton didn't turn up. We don't have enough adults now. We'll have to go home."

"They've been looking forward to this a long time," another voice added.

"Well," a third, the store clerks voice, "I'm sorry and all, but the deposit was non refundable."

"We understand," the first nodded. "We're just letting you know we won't be needing the equipment after all."

Max watched the two men leave.

"What was all that about?" Max approached the clerk, still looking at the door.

"They're some kind of chaperones or something, from a school for handicapped kids. They brought a bunch of 'em up for a couple days skiing and stuff but one of the adults never showed up. There's some law that means they have to have a certain number of adults to kids ratio. So either some kids miss out or they all go home. They decided on the latter."

Max hurried out of the store.

"Hey, mister!" he called at the two men. He caught them by a big yellow school bus. Max could see that it had been modified to carry handicapped children. "Excuse me," he called again.

The two men stopped and turned.

"I uh, heard about your problem," Max told them. "Do the adults have to have any special kind of qualifications?"

"No," he shook his head. "Not really. Uhm... why?"

"I'd like to help," Max shrugged. "I don't ski and my, uhm, friends, they're all up there having fun. And rather than sit around being bored out of my skull... What had you planned on doing?"

"Just some simple tobogganing," the man nodded. "Sledding. And we hired these special chairs on skis. Anything to give them a good time, really. We're only here for three days."

"I'll help," Max nodded again. "I mean, if it's okay and everything."

"Are you sure?" the man narrowed his eyes. "We can't pay you or anything."

"That's not a problem," Max grinned. "I'd be glad to do something useful."

"Well, thank you. I'm Danny, this is Martin, the woman over there is Mrs. Kopinsky. And these..." Danny indicated the children with their faces pressed against the windows, "are the kids."

Max spent the day getting to know the children, who had physical and mental handicaps of all types. They tobogganed, they sledded, they made snowmen and they had snowball fights. They all had a blast and Max could not remember having laughed as hard for ages. Lunch was free, served in a corner of the burger bar style diner and infinitely far more pleasant than meeting up with the rich arrogant snobs he was spending the week with.

Me and My Shadow

Elizabeth Parker was a competent skier. As a group, they had all made their way up the Mohawk chair to the Summit Tower. After their initial downhill run, they had all split up to do their own thing. Elizabeth, however, stuck to Sean as best as she could. When they all met up for lunch at the a la carte restaurant, she even made sure that she sat next to him.

"So, where's Max?" Maria looked around trying to see him. "Maybe he's run off with some snow bunny."

"Yeah," Sean snorted. "And eight year old bunny."

Everyone started to laugh, Elizabeth included. The conversation stuck with Max for a while, with Alex, Sean and Maria running him down. Kyle noticed Elizabeth's lack of defense and raised an eye at Michael. Michael just shrugged.

"You're a pretty good skier," Michael told Kyle. "You obviously do a lot."

"Yeah," Kyle nodded. "I live in Colorado. Aspen is almost my second home."

"He's not as good as me," Sean pointed out. "I was always beating him to the bottom."

"Some people just like to enjoy it," Michael shrugged.

"How about a race, guys," Sean leaned forward. "We each put a grand in the pot to sweeten it."

"I'm here to enjoy myself," Kyle shook his head. "Who really cares who the best is?"

"I do," Sean looked a little aggressive.

"Okay," Kyle sighed. "So you're the better skier."

"Nuh uh," Sean shook his head. "We have to prove it."

"Maybe later," Kyle turned away. He dropped his voice so that only Michael could hear him. "Freaking moron takes all the fun out of everything."

After lunch, Elizabeth became separated from Sean who was trying very hard to persuade Kyle to race him. Maria caught up with her on a narrow run through some trees.

"You know," Maria told her. "I've been feeling all this animosity toward Max because I thought he was using you. But it's the other way around, isn't it?"

"No it's not, Maria," Elizabeth shook her head. "You're imagining things. Is that why Max was upset this morning? Cause you gave him the third degree?"

"You're using him," Maria nodded. "You were flirting with Sean at lunch time... and you keep on following him... You're using Max to make Sean jealous."

"No, Maria," Elizabeth started to ski again. "You're imagining things again. Like the time you thought that guy I won that stupid radio date with was totally in love with me."

"You never once stood up for Max, Elizabeth," Maria persevered. "They were tearing him apart and you just laughed."

"Okay!" Elizabeth gave in. "I still like Sean and I want him back, okay? I want him back so bad that it hurts. Is that what you wanted me to say?"

"What will you tell Max if it works?"

"I'll uh, cross that bridge when I come to it."

Fall Out

They all gathered together for dinner. As the previous night, the girls had cooked. Keeping things light and simple, they had prepared spaghetti and meatballs with a side salad and garlic bread. They were all siting down together, talking about the day's events.

"Well," Tess grinned. "While you were all risking life and limb against the snow, rocks and trees, I was pitting my survival skills against the hordes of shoppers at the mall. I had a good time, actually."

"Where did you get to, Kyle?" Alex asked. "We hardly saw you after lunch."

"I spent the afternoon trying out the back runs," he shrugged.

"The back runs?" Sean snorted. "Their way too easy."

"They're fun, too," Kyle shrugged. "Which is why I ski in the first place. Sometimes it is good to just enjoy things, you know?"

"Wuss," Sean shook his head. "And talking of wusses," he looked at Max. "Enjoy your kiddy capers today Evans?"

"Yeah," Max nodded with a smile. "Actually, I did. It was great. I had a great time."

"With all those kids, huh?" Jesse winked at Sean.

"Yeah," Max continued to nod. "Actually, the kids were the best part."

"Finding your true level, huh?" Sean sniggered.

"Yeah," Max agreed. "After some time with you, it was good to raise it up closer to what I'm used to for a while."

Michael and Kyle burst out laughing while Sean glared at him.

"Funny man," he spat.

Grandma got run over by a reindeer,
Walking home from our house Christmas eve,
You can say there's no such thing as Santa,
But as for me and Grandpa, we believe.

She'd been drinking too much egg nog,
And we'd begged her not to go,
But she forgot her medication,
And she staggered out the door into the snow.

When they found her Christmas morning,
At the scene of the attack,
She had hoof prints on her forehead,
And incriminating claws marks on her back.

Grandma go run over by a reindeer,
Walkin' home from our house Christmas eve,
You can say there's no such thing as Santa,
But as for me and Grandpa, we believe.

Now we're all so proud of Grandpa,
He's been taking this so well,
See him in there watching football,
Drinking beer and playing cards with cousin Mel.

It's not Christmas without Grandma,
All the family's dressed in black,
And we just can't help but wonder,
Should we open up her gifts or send them back?

Grandma got run over by a reindeer,
Walking home from our house Christmas eve,
You can say there's no such thing as Santa,
But as for me and Grandpa, we believe.

Now the goose is on the table,
And the pudding made of pig,
And the blue and silver candle,
That would just have matched the hair in Grandma's wig.

I've warned all my friends and neighbours,
Better watch out for yourselves,
They should never give a license,
To a man who drives a sleigh and plays with elves.

Grandma got run over by a reindeer,
Walking home from our house, Christmas eve.
You can say there's no such thing as Santa,
But as for me and Grandpa, we believe.

Grandma got run over by a reindeer,
Walking home from our house, Christmas eve.
You can say there's no such thing as Santa,
But as for me and Grandpa, we believe.

Day 3 - December 21st

Balance

After breakfast, they again loaded up the cars and drove to the ski slopes. Eager to avoid Sean and his testosterone, Kyle was already on the ski-lift heading up the mountain before anyone else was ready.

"I thought it would be nice to spend some time with him," Vicky sighed.

"You can hang with me, Vick," Sean grinned. "Seeing as he's too chicken shit to race me."

Max had to work hard not to smirk at the glare of hatred Elizabeth threw Vicky.

As she had yesterday, Tess waited till everyone had left before she returned to the cars. Max followed her, aware of Elizabeth's eyes on him.

"Ski school's that way," Tess pointed out.

"Yeah," he nodded. "I'm just waiting till the, uhm, instructors arrive. It's not like I have much to say to them." Max pointed toward the kids waiting in line.

"I suppose not. Well... See ya, Max."

"Later, Tess," he nodded.

He watched as Tess's Mini Cooper disappeared around the bend just as the yellow school bus appeared.

"Hey, Max," Danny greeted him with a warm hand shake as he climbed down.

On the bus, the kids were calling his name, eager to play with him again.

"You know," Martin stepped beside him while they watched the kids drinking hot chocolate after they had returned from a sleigh ride through the trees. "You don't often find people of you age willing to give up their free time. Especially to help a bunch of handicapped kids."

"It's been a total pleasure," Max grinned. "And a bit of an eye opener, too. And let's just say that it goes some way to helping me find my balance."

"That sounds kind of deep."

"Quite the opposite, actually," Max shrugged. "Quite the opposite."

After lunch, they resumed their play. When he wasn't being pelted by snowballs, or tobogganing with some of the kids, he was giving piggy back rides to others. The air around him was filled with the constant squeal and giggles of kids having fun.

From a vantage point among some trees at the end of a ski run. Elizabeth stood and watched the scene below her. She was seeing Max in a new light. A light in which she had never seen before; one that she would never have guessed existed.

* * *

Redemption

Because of a change in the weather and the threat of a heavy snow fall, Danny and Martin rounded up the kids, said goodbye to Max a little earlier and headed for their Children's home. With some time still to wait for the others to finish, Max decided to wait it out in a café. Inside the café, he sat in a booth behind a noisy group of pre-school children, a day care that looked after them while their parents skied.

"It's snowing!" one of them called out.

Max looked through the window to see that new snow was indeed falling, large chunky flakes of it.

"Lucy," one of the kids called. "Where does snow come from?"

"From the clouds," came the response.

"But how is it made all the way up there?"

"I really don't know, Matthew," the young woman called Lucy who sounded like she was still in High School answered. "Sorry."

"I can help you with that, young man," Max was surprised to hear Elizabeth's voice. He heard someone sitting down in the booth behind him.

"Snow is made up of snowflakes which are made up of from two to two hundred separate snow crystals. Snow crystals are crystals of ice that have formed around tiny bits of dirt and dust that have been carried up into the atmosphere by the wind. So snow crystals are really soil particles that have been dressed up in ice."

"My Mom says that every snowflake is different and they all have six points," one small girl pointed out."

"Well, some people think that there are really four different shapes of snow crystals. The simplest shape is a long needle shaped like a pin. The other shapes all have six sides. One of them is a long, hollow column that is shaped like a six-sided prism. There are also thin, flat six-sided plates. And lastly there are intricate, six-pointed stars. So yes, your Mom is right about the six sides.

"The shape that a snow crystal will take is dependent upon the temperature at which it was formed. The temperature in the highest clouds is really, really cold and they are made up of ice crystal columns. The other three shapes are formed in a narrow temperature range. Depending on how cold it is, then that decides what shapes the flakes become. As the snow crystals grow they become heavier and fall towards Earth. If they spin like tops as they fall then they may be perfectly symmetrical when they hit the Earth. But if they fall in a sideways fashion then they end up lopsided. Falling snow crystals clump together to form snowflakes. Each snowflake is made up from 2 to about 200 separate crystals. So that means that it's really, really unlikely that any two will be the same. But you know what? Who really wants to study every single snowflake out there? Not me."

"But why is it white" a little boy asked. "If it's made of ice, and ice is made of water, why isn't it blue like the ocean?"

Max grinned at that one.

"The sunlight that we see is white. And it's actually made of different colors. Like mixing your paint pots. Most natural materials absorb some sunlight which gives them their color, okay? Like grass absorbs all the colors except the ones that makes green. So we see green grass. Snow, however, reflects most of the sunlight. The way the flakes were made means that there are hundreds and hundreds of tiny surfaces from which the light can be reflected. All the colors are mixed up again so we see snow as in its white appearance."

"You sure are smart, lady," a young girl giggled.

"Only sometimes," Elizabeth sighed.

Clearly, there was far more depth to Elizabeth Parker than Max had realized. Without her seeing him, he stole away from the café. He didn't want to embarrass her in front of the kids.

* * *

Peace On Earth

At dinner that evening, Max was again the butt of Sean's jokes. This time, however, Max did not reply with any witty comebacks. His silence was taken by Sean as a sign of weakness and encouraged Sean to make more comments. Sean again did not help with the washing up and both Kyle and Michael commented on this to Jesse and Alex. Max, however, said nothing. No one went into town that evening and everyone retired to bed early.

"Thank you," Elizabeth spoke from the darkness on her side of the bed. "You know, for not trying to put Sean down. He has a funny sense of humor. He doesn't mean anything by it."

"Right," Max nodded in the gloom.

"How did things go with Tess today?" she asked.

"Not very well," Max admitted. "In fact, I'm kind of getting nowhere."

"Do you think that maybe spending all that time with those handicapped kids might have... well, prevented you getting close to her? You know. Flirting with her?"

"She just said 'see ya' and drove off," he shrugged. "I'm sorry, but I don't think she's attracted to me."

"Well," her voice sounded down. "You will keep trying, won't you?"

"Yeah," Max told her.

There had been no trace of animosity in either of their voices.

"How are you doing with Sean?" Max rolled over on his side to face her. "You know, with Tess being out of the way."

"Not very good," she did the same, facing him. "He's got this obsession about challenging Kyle to a race. You see, Sean has this thing about being the best, about being first. It's what's going to make him such an awesome CEO one-day. We searched for him all day but never found him. And of course, he barely paid any attention to me at all."

"I'll have a word with Kyle," Max promised. "I'll see if he will accept Sean's challenge and race him." He didn't add that he would ask Kyle to let Sean win.

"I've never really thanked you for doing this, have I?"

"That's okay," Max nodded, his eyes feeling heavy. "Thanks for offering it to me. Without this job, I really doubt I would have made Easter."

"Good night, Max," she closed her eyes.

"'Night, Liz."

So this is Christmas
And what have you done
Another year over
And a new one just begun
And so this is Christmas
I hope you have fun
The near and the dear ones
The old and the young

A very merry Christmas
And a happy New Year
Let's hope it's a good one
Without any fear

And so this is Christmas
For weak and for strong
For rich and the poor ones
The world is so wrong
And so Happy Christmas
For black and for white
For yellow and red ones
Let's stop all the fight

A very merry Christmas
And a happy New Year
Let's hope it's a good one
Without any fear

And so this is Christmas
And what have we done
Another year over
And a new one just begun
And so Happy Christmas
I hope you have fun
The near and the dear one
The old and the young

A very merry Christmas
And a happy New Year
Let's hope it's a good one
Without any fear

War is over if you want it
War is over now

Post by WR »

Hi Everyone,

As always, I thank you for your feedback and I am glad that you continue to enjoy my story.

Well... it being Christmas Eve, I'm a little pressed for time, so lets get on with the story. And Tonights chapter is a touch on the long side. But I make no apologies for that 'cause I know you love it. :)

Day 4 - December 22nd

Opportunity Knocks

Used to doing so, Max woke up again early in the morning. He climbed to his feet and went into the bathroom where he changed into his swimming trunks. After pulling a T-shirt, he slipped from the bedroom and went down into the kitchen. After finding a pot of fresh coffee, he heated some milk in the microwave and made Elizabeth a cup of vanilla laced coffee. She was just stirring as he returned to their room. Leaving it on the bedside table, Max went down to the swimming pool.

It was empty when he got there, so he dove in and started to swim backwards and forwards. Tess arrived a little later, wearing a powder blue dressing gown.

"Morning, Max," she called. "An early start?"

"Oh yeah," Max grinned at her. "The early bird catches the worm."

"You find many worms in the pool?" she raised an eyebrow.

"Uh, not a worm, no," he grinned.

Tess laughed and shed her dressing gown to reveal a bright red bikini.

"You look pretty good," he winked.

"I do, huh?" she giggled. "Well, you know, you're pretty easy on the eyes, too."

"Better not let the others hear this, huh?" Max chuckled. "What are your plans today?"

"Not skiing," she shrugged, slipping into the pool. "How about you?"

"Funnily enough," Max smirked. "Not skiing, too."

"Maybe you can persuade Elizabeth to not ski with you. I hear that it's a great thing to do together."

"I'll do that," Max smiled, recognizing that he had just been brushed off.

His respect for Tess actually rose a little. She seemed very loyal.

Elizabeth couldn't help smiling as she finished the coffee that Max had brought up for her. When he was being nice, he was rather an amazing person. She wished that she had been able to start their relationship on a friendlier basis. She might even have been able to have some fun while she was trying to win Sean back. When she finished her coffee, she showered, dressed and headed for the stairs.

Apart from Max, whom Elizabeth knew was down in the swimming pool, Sean was the only person up and about. He was playing a Hockey game on the Nintendo. She smiled a huge inward smile as she made herself another coffee.

"Hey, Sean," Elizabeth smiled as she sat next to him.

"Elizabeth," he smiled. "You're looking mighty fine this morning."

"I am?" she beamed. "Well you're looking particularly good yourself. Kind of a pity that we have our partners here with us, huh?"

"Why should that stop us?" Sean shrugged. "Where is Evans anyway?"

"I think he's working out in the Gym."

"And Tess is swimming," Sean smirked, edging closer toward Liz and placing an arm across the back of the sofa. "So that means we are both all on our lonesome."

Elizabeth's heart started to pound as she saw Sean starting to lean in to kiss her. This was it, she thought.

"Morning," she heard Vicky's chirpy voice call as she skipped down the steps.

The moment was lost as Sean moved away as though he had been stung.

Come they told me,
Pa rum pum pum pum
Our new born King to see,
Pa rum pum pum pum
Our finest gifts we bring,
Pa rum pum pum pum
To lay before the King,
Pa rum pum pum pum
Rum pum pum pum
Rum pum pum pum
So to honor Him,
Pa rum pum pum pum,
When we come.

Baby Gesu *,
Pa rum pum pum pum
I am a poor boy too,
Pa rum pum pum pum
I have no gift to bring,
Pa rum pum pum pum
That's fit to give our King,
Pa rum pum pum pum
Rum pum pum pum
Rum pum pum pum
Shall I play for you?
Pa rum pum pum
On my drum.

Mary nodded,
Pa rum pum pum pum
The ox and lamb kept time,
Pa rum pum pum pum
I played my drum for Him,
Pa rum pum pum
I played my best for Him,
Pa rum pum pum pum
Rum pum pum pum
Rum pum pum pum
Then He smiled at me,
Pa rum pum pum pum
Me and my drum.

They had all gathered together for breakfast again. Elizabeth looked up at Max, a huge question in her eyes. His quick frown and a subtle shake of his head told Liz that he had got nowhere with Tess. His eyes and quick glance at Sean asked his own question. Liz shook her head and gave a soft sigh. Max placed his arm around her shoulder.

"Don't worry," he murmured in her ear, making it look like he was being affectionate. "Just carry on being as charming and warm to him as you can. If he still can't see what he's missing then... Don't worry. I'll keep working on her."

"Hey," Jesse called out so that everyone could hear him. "Let's all go to that big club tonight. A few beers, a little dancing. Should be a blast."

"I'm up for that," Sean's face lit up.

Everyone was agreeing.

"Sorry," Tess shook her head. "I can't. I have to get back to Yale for an important meeting. I won't be back till morning. But you can still go," she patted Sean's hand.

"It sounds all right to me," Elizabeth smiled. "Right Max?"

She was looking at him, expectantly, waiting for an answer. Her look told him that she was expecting him to cry off. This was an ideal opportunity to have Sean to herself.

"Sure," he smiled at her. "It sounds like a blast."

Spotting her well concealed disappointment, he again leaned in, appearing to nuzzle her ear.

"I'll pretend to hurt my ankle today," he whispered. "It looks less obvious that way. You'll get your time with Sean."

Collision

They had taken the children higher up the mountain today. Because it was their last day, they had decided to give them a treat and allow them to try longer runs on their sleds, toboggans and chair-skis. As he had for the last two days, Max was enjoying his time. A few times, he had seen some of the people he was staying with, always at a distance and so fortunately, they did not see him. Max was doing his best to ensure the kids enjoyed their time as they would all be leaving just after lunchtime, returning to the home at which they lived.

Meanwhile, Elizabeth was doing her best to keep up with Sean. Good to his word, Max had asked Kyle to accept Sean challenge and the race had gone well for him. Kyle was left behind and in a fit of exultation, Sean had been flying ever since. Elizabeth was a competent skier, but she was no where near Sean's standard. She was struggling to keep up. Watching him as he slalomed around some trees, Elizabeth did not see the novice sway into her path and fall over. In an explosion of snow, skis, poles and limbs, she tumbled down the hill.

A short distance away, Max saw the whole event unfold in slow motion before him. He heard her cry out in pain. Seeing Elizabeth come to a halt and not moving, he took off across the ski run as though the devil was on his heels. The novice who had fallen climbed to his feet and dusted himself off. He didn't even notice the young woman sprawled on the ground a few yards away. Max glanced once at the man and was at Elizabeth's side; he was hardly breathing. He could hear her crying as he knelt beside her.

"Liz?" he called softly. "Are you okay? Where does it hurt?"

"My ankle!" she sobbed. "Oh, god, my ankle hurts so much."

Still attached to the ski, Elizabeth's foot was bent back at an awkward angle. With gentle hands, Max unclipped the ski and eased her boot from the bindings. He unclipped the boot and as carefully as he could, he pulled the boot from her foot. Max then cautiously felt Elizabeth's lower leg and ankle. She did cry out in pain as he tested around her ankle bone.

"It doesn't seem to be broken," his voice was filled with care.

"It still hurts, though," Elizabeth whimpered.

"Wrap your arms around my neck," he urged her.

She did as she was told and Max scooped her up in his arms. Holding her to his body, he crossed the ski run, heading for the huts where the large first aid flag flew. Elizabeth had buried her face into Max's chest and was crying.

"Could you grab her skis and stuff?" Max asked Martin who had come to help him.

While Martin collected the young woman's belongings, Max carried her to seek some assistance.

Said the night wind to the little lamb,
Do you see what I see
Way up in the sky, little lamb,
Do you see what I see
A star, a star, dancing in the night
With a tail as big as a kite
With a tail as big as a kite

Said the little lamb to the shepherd boy,
Do you hear what I hear
Ringing through the sky, shepherd boy,
Do you hear what I hear
A song, a song, high above the trees
With a voice as big as the sea
With a voice as big as the sea

Said the shepherd boy to the mighty king,
Do you know what I know
In your palace warm, mighty king,
Do you know what I know
A Child, a Child shivers in the cold
Let us bring Him silver and gold
Let us bring Him silver and gold

Said the king to the people everywhere,
Listen to what I say
Pray for peace, people everywhere!
Listen to what I say
The Child, the Child, sleeping in the night
He will bring us goodness and light
He will bring us goodness and light

"Nothing appears to be broken," the doctor assured her, checking the X-Ray negative against a light box. "And it doesn't seem to be that bad a sprain. I would say that if you stay off your foot for the rest of today and tomorrow, and with a little T L C, you should be fine by Christmas Eve."

The doctor bandaged her foot and let her borrow a pair of crutches. Max, however, carried her from the station and down the hill to the café below. After leaving messages for the rest of the gang, Max took Elizabeth home. She had remained silent the whole time.

After settling her into an armchair, Max went into the kitchen where he made her a cup of vanilla flavored coffee.

"Do you want anything to eat?" he asked her.

"No," she shook her head. "No, thank you."

Max nodded and helped her prop her wounded foot onto a small cushion.

"I'm sorry," Elizabeth whimpered.

"What for?" Max looked up at her.

"Everything," she shrugged. "For the way I've been treating you, for spoiling your day... You know. Those kids. Everything."

"Well," Max smiled. "I could have been a little easier on you too. And as for those kids, well, they were about done anyway. We were just starting to pack up, so you didn't really spoil anyone's day. I was kind of wondering what to do with myself anyway."

"I bet you never imagined doing this," she gave him sad smile.

"No," he nodded. "But there are worse things to do."

"There are?" she gave a wry grin.

"Sure," he nodded. "But you'll have to give me a moment to think about it."

"I'm not normally this horrible, you know," she looked down at her hands, which were resting in her lap.

"I kind of guessed that," Max sat down beside her. "I mean, your friends seem so loyal toward you."

"Yeah," Elizabeth nodded. "They're really great. I'm, uh... I'm sorry if they're giving you a hard time. I guess I should have seen that coming. I'm just... You know, it's this thing with Sean... I guess I kind of lose my head a little."

"That's okay," Max nudged her with his shoulder. "I guess people can get a little crazy when they're in love."

"Yeah," Elizabeth sighed. "Have you ever felt like you've wanted something for so long, but it always just seems out of your reach, and then for one fleeting moment... there it is? Only to be snatched away again?"

"I thought I did, once," Max nodded. "But now that I look back on what I had with Mel, I know that it wasn't love or anything. I realized that what really upset me was the fact that my ego got bruised. I mean, I got dumped for a dead beat private, 'cause he had a few bucks in his pocket and I didn't. That's kind of hard to swallow, you know? But I can see now that it could have been worse. She could have stayed with me."

"Well... it's her loss," Elizabeth gave him an easy smile.

"That's right," Max grinned. "And if Sean can't see the wood for the trees, then it's his loss too."

"My Mom always says that," Elizabeth frowned. "About seeing the wood for the trees."

The rest of the gang arrived a short while later. After everyone made a huge fuss over their friend, Sean took the seat next to her. Max watched as Sean fawned all over Elizabeth, although he noticed that whenever she needed something, he asked someone else to get it. Another thing that Max noticed was that Maria had been watching him a lot more than usual, and she was looking at him, not with hatred in her eyes, but... pity.

"Did Tess get to Yale all right?" Kyle asked.

* * *

Home Alone

Naturally, Elizabeth had been excused chores. The girls prepared the meal, and afterwards, the boys, with the exception of Sean who was flirting with Liz, cleaned up.

"When do we get to cook and they clean," Michael grumbled.

"Don't know about you, Guerin," Kyle smirked. "But no one would thank us if you let me loose on the oven."

"I happen to be a decent cook," Michael looked offended.

When they had finished, everyone was sitting in the living room.

"Well," Alex looked at his watch. "I guess we should think about getting ready. That club gets packed pretty quickly and they might not let us in."

"You're kidding, right?" Isabel laughed. "Not let 'us' in?"

"You coming, Elizabeth?" Sean gave her wink.

"Uhm, no," Liz shook her head with regret. "The uh, doctor said I had to stay off my feet. You know?"

"Aw, come on. What can it hurt? You can sit somewhere quiet... and dark." He gave a wink meant only for her.

"No," Max shook his head. "Sorry and all, but we won't risk her hurting her foot any more. It was quite a bad fall she took."

"Yeah," Maria nodded. "I want my best friend on her feet for Christmas. Not in a plaster cast."

"It's not in a cast, Maria," Sean rolled his eyes.

"Yeah," Maria nodded. "And I intend to see that it stays that way."

The couples all climbed the steps. Maria followed only after Sean went.

"I'm sorry, Liz," Max sat beside her. "I know this is a good opportunity for you but you really shouldn't risk your foot like that. I mean, maybe you might get somewhere with him only to hurt your foot more and lose him back to Tess again."

"Yeah," she nodded. "You're right. But hey, what about you? You should go. Maybe you might... well... you could always go somewhere else and find someone, you know?"

"I'm supposed to be your boyfriend, Liz," He took her hand in his. "And I would never abandon a girlfriend of mine like that. I would stay at home with her and keep her company and entertained. So it looks like you're stuck with me."

"There are worse things," Liz grinned. "Just give me a moment to think of them."

After the gang had left for their action packed evening of fun and frivolity, Max made them both a hot drink, and set up a small table in front of Elizabeth's sofa.

"I thought we could play Clue," Max grinned, holding up the board game.

"Just the two of us?" Elizabeth rolled her eyes.

"Why not?" Max laughed. "It will be fun. And you be Miss Scarlet."

"Okay, Professor Plum," Liz chuckled.

They played for ages, cracking jokes and laughing all the time.

"Aha!" Max shouted with glee. "I have it. It was Miss Scarlet in the living room with the crutch."

"It was not!" Liz squealed with laughter.

"Oh," Max huffed. "And how do you know?"

"One, I have Miss Scarlet here," she laid down the card. "Two, I already know that you hold the living room card, and three... there is no crutch, Max."

"Oh well," Max shrugged. "Seeing as it was Professor Plum who was murdered, that seemed the most likely scenario."

"So you think I want to murder you, huh?" she continued to laugh. "You took a big risk to stay here alone with me, then."

"Oh yeah," Max smirked. "I love to live dangerously. And being alone in a house with a femme fatal is about as dangerous as it gets. And I've seen all the movies."

Max put the board game away and made themselves another hot drink.

"Did you bring a swim suit?" Max turned to face her.

"Yeah," she nodded. "Why?"

"Swimming would be great for your ankle. You'd be practically weightless and help ease out the sprained tendons and that. How about it?"

"Okay," Liz nodded after a moment's thought. "Pass me my crutches."

Max handed Elizabeth her crutches, but before she could stand up, he lifted her up from the sofa. Elizabeth rolled her eyes. In their room, Max went into the bathroom and changed into his swimming trunks.

"Are you decent?" he called.

"Yeah," he heard Elizabeth's reply.

He found her lying on the bed with her pale pink dressing gown on. She swung around to start to climb up but Max stopped her, moving to lift her again.

"Max," she rolled her eyes. "I can use the crutches, you know."

"I know," Max nodded. "But the only way you will stand a chance to get Sean back is by being mobile. The more rest you get the better. So relax and enjoy this, cause I won't do it every day, you know."

"I should hope not," she wrapped her arms around his neck. "'Cause I would hate for my legs to atrophy."

"And what pretty legs they are too," he grinned.

"If you weren't carrying me," Elizabeth rolled her eyes, "I would hit you."

"Another good reason to carry you, then," Max laughed.

When Max pulled his T-shirt off, Liz couldn't help looking at Max's body. She was surprised by how fit he looked, even though he still looked a little too lean. He definitely needed feeding.

"You should maybe wear a bikini," Max couldn't help looking at her body as they bobbed in the water. "You know, like Tess does."

"You might have noticed," Elizabeth rolled her eyes. "I can hardly compete with Tess up here, can I?"

"You have other qualities, Liz," Max gave her an open, honest smile. "You have a great figure and when you smile, you have a lovely face. And your hair..." He reached out and ran his hand through her damp locks.

Elizabeth could only gaze upon Max in astonishment. Her mouth hung open.

"Come on," Max broke the moment. "Time for a steam and then I'll get you back upstairs."

As he had promised, Max carried Elizabeth back upstairs after they had soaked up the heat of the steam room. When he had run her a hot bubble bath, Max went to another bathroom to shower. Elizabeth soaked for ages before she carefully eased herself up and out of the bath. She sat on the edge of the tub while she dried herself, thinking about how nice Max was being. After she had slipped on her nightdress and then her dressing gown, she did as Max had ordered and called him. Max carried her to their bed. He tucked her up and climbed in on the other side.

"What was your childhood like, Max?" Liz broke the silence as they laid in bed together. "I mean, I told you all about mine in those notes, but I never really paid much attention to yours."

"It was..." Max started but fell silent. "It was good. At least, until... until my Dad died. After that, it was hard. But my Mom, she tried her best to take his place. At least, until she remarried."

"How did he die? Do you mind talking about it?"

"My Dad ran a ranch. A pretty big one. You know, cattle, horses. He built it up from almost nothing. Believe it or not, we were pretty rich. Maybe not as rich as you guys, but rich enough."

"Is that why you never seemed intimidated by any of us?"

"Partly," Max grinned. "And partly because it annoyed you."

"Ha ha," he could sense her smile.

"Anyway, one day, we sold some beef to a large company. They did this random test and traces of toxic chemicals were found in the meat. Large traces of toxic chemicals. So a team of environmental specialists descended on our ranch and found that our soil was totally contaminated. We lost everything overnight."

"Oh, Max," Elizabeth gasped. "I'm so sorry."

"We couldn't understand where the chemicals came from, but the answer was pretty obvious. Right next to us... well, a couple of miles up the road is a large petro-chemical plant. We believe that they were pumping their waste into an underground stream, which polluted our land. Of course, we can't prove that. My Dad, he hired people to find proof. But to pay for it, he worked a couple of jobs. One was driving. One night... he... he fell asleep at the wheel."

His silence was all that was needed for an explanation.

"How old were you?" Elizabeth's voice was heavy.

"Fourteen," Max released a deep breath. "And we were pretty desperate by then. The insurance company said it was suicide and wouldn't pay out. We had to sell our house... well... our shed, 'cause that was all it really was. We would have been destitute except that my Mom agreed to marry the man who became my step-dad. He was my Uncle... my Dad's older brother. We... we don't get along, I'm afraid. He keeps running my Dad down, and saying how I'll be a washed out no good no hoper just like him. He wanted me to enter law enforcement, like him, partly to help earn money to keep him in beer. He's a deputy sheriff. When I announced that I was going to Harvard, he said that I needn't think he'll be paying me to goof around for five years. My Mom wants to give me money, in secret, but he doesn't earn much and she can't hide it from him. So... I struggle as best as I can."

"I'm sorry, Max," Elizabeth was near to tears. "I never knew."

"And why should you have, Liz?" He gave a half smile. "We never started out to be friends, did we? We had what I guess you would call, a business relationship."

"I'd like to think we're friends, now, Max."

"Of course we are, Liz," he smiled. "You're nowhere near as bad as I thought you were. Just a little uptight when it comes to Sean. So, uh... how does your ankle feel?"

"Fine, actually," Liz moved her foot a little. "Maybe tomorrow..."

"No," Max shook his head. "The Doc said to stay off of it, and so that's what you are going to do."

"What am I going to do all day, Max?" Liz yawned.

A few minutes later, her breathing was low and even. She had fallen asleep.

"Goodnight, Liz," Max leaned over and gave her a soft kiss on her cheek. "Sweet dreams."

The mood is right, the spirit's up
We're here tonight, and that's enough

DAY 5 December 23rd

One Fine Day

Elizabeth was again forbidden to do anything during breakfast. Sean slipped into the chair beside her and was talking softly to her, walking his fingers up and down her arm. He moved away when everyone sat down to eat. Elizabeth couldn't help smiling.

"What time is Tess due back?" Maria asked between spoonfuls of Lucky Charms.

"Anytime soon," Sean shrugged, glancing at the clock.

His cell phone started to ring.

"Talk of the devil," he smiled, answering the phone. "Hi babe. You're what? Where? Yeah, hang on." Sean held his hand over the mouthpiece. "Tess is stuck in a snow drift a few miles up the road. The snowplows haven't been through yet. She wants one of us to come get her. I could never make it in my 'vette."

"Don't look at me," Michael shook his head. "If Tess got stuck in her Mini Cooper, how do you think my car will cope? How about you, Kyle?"

"Max can go," Elizabeth looked at him with pleading eyes.

"Sure," Max nodded. "Seeing as we have a four by four."

"Great," Sean grinned, winking at Liz. "Tess, babe? Max is coming to get you, He'll be there in ten, 'kay? Bye,"

Max gave Liz a smile as he went to get his coat. A few minutes later, he reversed out through the freshly fallen snow and was heading up the road to collect Tess. The last thing he saw was Sean moving closer to Elizabeth.

* * *

"Hey, babe," Sean called, moving away from Elizabeth when Max and Tess stepped into the kitchen.

"Hey yourself," she smiled, sitting next to him.

Sean leaned in for a kiss. He looked like he wanted to make it deep and passionate, but Tess only offered her cheek.

"I could kill for a coffee, she rose and moved toward the kitchen. "Are there any waffles left?"

The look on Liz's face was expectant. She had associated Tess's distant behavior with some sort of success on Max's part. Max gave a barely perceptible shake of his head and shrugged.

Everyone started to move toward their respective rooms to prepare for their day of skiing. Max started to collect the dishes and plates, tidying behind them. Michael reappeared and came to the kitchen to help him.

"That Sean is an asshole," he shook his head.

"Got that right," Max grinned. "Grade A."

"Watch out for him, Max. I think he might be after Elizabeth."

"Right," Max nodded. "I'll do that."

"Know what he did last night?"

"No," Max shook his head. "But I think I can guess."

"He left early," Michael shrugged. "Told Maria he was tired. But not too tired to offer a lift home to a red head."

"Can't see what... Tess sees in him, personally," Max exhaled. "As far as I can see, his only redeeming factor is he's rich, but then, so is Tess. So what gives? Why is it always the assholes who get the girls. Uh, present company excepted."

"You're not telling me you have a thing for Tess, are you?" Michael frowned. "Neither of them are my type but I'd take Elizabeth over Tess any day."

"So would I," Max grinned. "But I just can't figure out why a girl would be attracted to him, that's all."

"So what have you and Elizabeth got planned for today?"

"Not sure," Max shrugged. "She has to take it easy, so I guess I'll play it by ear."

Everyone had left for the ski slopes, so Max suggested that maybe they could take a trip into town.

"After all," he shrugged. "I haven't really seen it yet."

So an hour later, they were wandering around the town. Well, in Elizabeth's case, they were bobbling. She was proving to be very adept with a pair of crutches, and they guaranteed them a clear path wherever they went.

"It's like the Red Sea parting," Elizabeth laughed.

"I, uh, see that Sean is getting a little friendlier," Max gave a weak smile over a cup of coffee.

"Yeah," Elizabeth nodded. "I think something is going on between him and Tess. Are you sure you're getting nowhere with her?"

"She seems totally uninterested in me as anything other than a friend," Max shook his head. "Maybe she's seeing what... " He paused. "I mean, maybe she's just falling out of love with him."

"Finally," she grinned. "But he's not really noticing me, if you know what I mean. He's flirting and stuff... but it's not enough. What I need is some kind of final push."

"Well..." Max looked at her. "Look at you and then look at Tess."

"I already mentioned my bra size," Liz looked down. Do you think I should get implants?"

"No!" Max almost choked.

"I think Sean would like them."

"No, Liz. 'Cause that's not you. Sean might like them but you would never be comfortable with them. I think that maybe you should... think about how you dress."

"What's wrong with my dress? I dress fashionably. Stylish, even."

"But not hot," Max shrugged. "Yes, you always look good. But some times... Have you ever heard that saying? A man wants a lady in public but a whore in the bedroom?"

"I see," Elizabeth started to nod.

"You have a great figure, Liz," Max smiled at her. "Why not show it off a little. And then you could have Sean eating from your... well, hand."

The row of exclusive boutiques was the next stop. Max stared in bewilderment at the range of clothing with no price tags. Liz looked up at him and smiled.

"Rather than just hanging around," she leaned against him, "how about you leave me in the capable hands of the sales clerks and meet me for lunch at that café?"

"Deal," Max grinned.

Three hours later, after exploring the mall, Max was sitting in the café, staring up the street. When he saw the beautiful young woman on crutches moving toward him, his jaw dropped. Her hair had been styled with waves and curls and she wore a brown corduroy sleeveless mini dress, belted at the waist with a cream shirt under it. How she had squeezed her feet into those calf length high-heeled boots, the lord alone knew. Her legs were covered with crème woolen leggings. She looked hot with a capital 'H'.

"You like?" she smiled at his reaction.

"I do," he nodded. "Oh yes."

"Do you think..."

"Sean?" he winked. "Tess who?"

While Elizabeth ordered a coffee, Max returned to the stores to collect her purchases for her. He returned to find her talking to three young men, perhaps a little older than Max. He scowled at them when they looked up at him. They soon moved away.

"What did they want?" Max tried to sound casual.

"My number," she shrugged. "They didn't get it, though."

"Good," Max nodded. "You know, cause maybe giving Sean some competition before you even bagged him isn't such a good idea."

"Sean thinks you're competition," she reminded him.

"True," Max looked in the direction of where the guys had left. "Are you ready for lunch?"

* * *

"Where are we going now?"

They had spent the remainder of the afternoon in town and now with the sun disappearing behind the mountains, Max was driving down a narrow snow covered lane.

"You'll see," Max smiled at her as he turned down another side road.

The snow had not been plowed here, but there were lots of tire tracks. At long last, Max turned into a parking lot. It was probably just a field but there were a dozen other cars there. With a majestic purple glow in the background, Max helped Elizabeth to a group of people who were gathering around a large, old fashioned sleigh. A team of horses had been hitched up to it.

"A sleigh ride?" Elizabeth's face shone with excitement. "I haven't been on one of these since I was a kid."

"I've never actually been on one," Max laughed. "But I saw a flyer for it back in the Mall and thought it would be kind of fun."

"Oh, Max," she breathed. "They are so much fun. Really!"

It was dark by the time the sleigh had made a complete circuit through trees lit with outdoor lights. Someone had started a large bonfire and the guests were seated on logs around it, with steaming cups of hot chocolate in their mittened hands.

"Are you cold?" Max was sure he had felt Elizabeth shiver.

"A bit," she smiled.

Max wrapped an arm around her and pulled her to him. She wriggled against him to get warm.

"What a lovely couple," one of the older ladies commented to her friend. "You can tell how much in love 'they' are."

The evening was rounded off with a wonderful meal in a Chinese Restaurant.

The house was in darkness when Max and Elizabeth finally arrived home. The journey had been made in a comfortable silence. Max helped her up the stairs and into the kitchen where Max was making them a hot chocolate to take up to their room.

"Thank you, Max," she smiled ap at him. "I had a wonderful time."

"I had a great time, too, Liz," he smiled, stroking her arm.

"I can't remember the last time I had so much fun."

"Me neither," he shook his head. "I hope I get to do it again some day."

"I'm sure you will, Max," she looked up into his eyes.

Their faces were close together. And they were closing. Simultaneously, they both closed their eyes as their lips dipped toward one another. A light came on in the hallway and the couple jumped apart.

"Sorry," Vicky staggered into the kitchen in a baby doll night dress. "I wanted a glass of water."

Max carried their drinks while Liz made her way carefully up the stairs. They were both feeling a little awkward. In the room, Elizabeth kept her distance from Max and wouldn't even look at him. They climbed into bed in silence.

"Night, Max," Elizabeth finally whispered before rolling onto her side, facing away from him..

"Night, Liz," he replied. "Sweet dreams."

Just hear those sleigh bells jingling, ring tingle tingling too
Come on, it´s lovely weather for a sleigh ride together with you,
Outside the snow is falling and friends are calling ´Yoo hoo,´
Come on, it´s lovely weather for a sleigh ride together with you.

Our cheeks are nice and rosy and comfy and cozy are we
We´re snuggled up together like two birds of a feather would be
Let´s take the road before us and sing a chorus or two
Come on, it´s lovely weather for a sleigh ride together with you.

DAY 6 December 24th

Red Handed

Max's first thought of the day was that it was Christmas Eve. Elizabeth, still on her side facing away from him, appeared to be asleep. Max climbed from the bed and gathered his gym clothes, going in to the bathroom to change. Liz was still asleep when he went down stairs.

He left the weight machines alone today. Concentrating instead on pushups, sit ups and other aerobic exercises. While he was taking a break, sitting on a bench and leaning back against the wall, he heard some strange noises. It sounded as though someone was working out in the steam room next door. Curious, Max left the Gym and approached the steam room door. His eyes widened when he peered through the small, round window, Kyle and Tess were inside, working out. Without clothing. Max couldn't help chuckling. The door at the top of the steps opened and Max darted into the gym again.

"What the fuck is going on?" Max heard Sean bellowing with rage.

"Sean?" he heard Tess exclaim.

"Shit," Kyle groaned.

"You bastard," Sean yelled.

All hell broke loose. There was clearly some sort of fight going on in the next room while Tess was screeching for them to stop. It didn't last very long before Sean finally stormed up the steps. He heard a car starting outside. A few moments Tess and Kyle crept out of the steam room and up the stairs. Shaking his head, Max waited for things to quiet down before he too returned to his room.

"I have some, uhm, good news for you," Max sat on the edge of the bed.

"What's that?" Elizabeth sat up, leaning against the headboard.

"I have the strongest feeling that Sean's going to need, uhm, your comfort now."

"Oh," she frowned. "Did you uh, succeed with Tess?"

There was a strange tightness to her voice.

"Not me," he shook his head. "It seems Kyle beat me to it. I just saw them in the steam room together. So did Sean."

"What? You mean...?"

"Yeah," Max nodded. "Inflagrante. Anyway, Sean just took off in the car. Kyle and Tess sneaked back upstairs. I suspect they're both packing."

Grinning from ear to ear, Liz bounced out of bed. She moved easily to her wardrobe.

"I see your foot is better," Max smiled.

"Oh, yeah," Liz looked back at him. "It is. And I guess I kind of forgot in any case. So what to you think?"

Liz produced a slinky black cocktail dress from her wardrobe and hung it against the door.

"It's uh..." Max was wide eyed. "That's hot, Liz."

"And I'm wearing this underneath."

She laid out a pair of silk thigh highs and nothing else. Max's face started to burn.

"I'll take Sean out to dinner tonight and tomorrow... Let's just say that your tuition is safe and that I'll have the best Christmas ever."

"Yes," Max forced a smile. It was, after all, why he was here.

"I'll wake up in his arms and he will never leave me again."

"He's a lucky guy, Elizabeth," Max turned toward the shower room. "I think I'll have my shower now."

Liz stopped and watched Max close the bathroom door behind him. It had been such a shock to hear him call her Elizabeth. She just stood and stared at the door before she left the room to use one of the other bathrooms.

Santa Baby,
Just slip a sable under the tree
For me
Been an awful good girl
Santa Baby, so hurry down the chimney tonight

Santa baby, a '54 convertible too
Light blue
I'll wait up for you, dear
Santa baby, so hurry down the chimney tonight

Think of all the fun I've missed
Think of all the fellas that I haven't kissed
Next year I could be just as good
If you'll check off my Christmas list

Santa Baby, I want a yacht and really that's not
A lot
Been an angel all year
Santa Baby, so hurry down the chimney tonight

Santa honey, one little thing I really need
The deed
To a platinum mine
Santa Baby, so hurry down the chimney tonight

Santa cutie, and fill my stocking with a duplex
And checks
Sign your 'x' on the line
Santa cutie, and hurry down the chimney tonight

Come and trim my Christmas tree
With some decorations bought at Tif-fa-ny
I really do believe in you
Lets see if you believe in me

Santa Baby, forgot to mention one little thing
A ring
I don't mean on the phone
Santa Baby, so hurry down the chimney tonight
Hurry down the chimney tonight
Hurry...tonight

No one other than Max and Elizabeth seemed to know the full story. All they knew was that Kyle and Tess were upstairs packing, Sean had disappeared and Vicky was in the living room, crying. They were all offering their own explanations.

"Looks like Sean is free again, huh?" Although she spoke to Elizabeth, Maria was watching Max carefully.

"Yeah," Max looked away. "So, what do you guys normally do on Christmas Eve?"

"Not this, Alex mumbled.

"More skiing?" Max finally looked up/

"Well," Isabel looked back from Vicky. "I need to go into town for some last minute bits and pieces."

"Me too," Liz nodded.

All of the girls seemed to think that this was a good idea.

It was around lunch time that Kyle and Tess emerged from their rooms and climbed down the stairs. They slipped through the front door and started to load up Kyle's car, Tess's still being trapped in a drift up the road. Only Michael and Max followed them out to say good bye.

"We've been fighting it all week," Kyle shrugged while holding Tess's hand. They had just explained what had happened. "But we just couldn't help it. Uh, this morning was the first, uhm, time. We fell in love."

"It happens," Max looked down.

"I felt I was trapped," Tess admitted. "The guy is such an asshole, but I thought no one would ever want me for me, you know? I mean, the pig treated me like a.. like a... well, not very well. But then Kyle... he... And all week, me and Sean haven't..." She gave up trying to explain.

Everyone just nodded in understanding.

"Well, see you, Max," Kyle shook his hand. "Michael. You two are cool guys. Give me a call sometime. Here's my number."

"Sure," the two young men nodded.

"Bye, Max," Tess reached up and kissed his cheek. "Keep an eye on Elizabeth. I think Sean might make a play for her now."

"Right," Max nodded.

After a wave, Max and Michael watched them until they disappeared up the main road.

* * *

The girls were still in town when Sean finally returned, worse the wear for alcohol. Max, Michael, Jesse and Alex were watching a sports show when he staggered into the living room.

"She gone?"

"Yeah," Jesse nodded.

"Bitch," he spat. "I was going to dump her anyway."

"You okay?" Alex stood up to steady his friend.

"Never better," he grinned. "Wanna know the funny thing?"

"What's that?" Jesse looked across.

"I've been banging Vicky for six months now." He started to laugh. "Girls can't get enough of me. They all throw themselves at me. And the stupid bimbos all think I'm being faithful. When you get offered it like I do, what's the point of being faithful, huh? I'll get me a cute little wife and have a ton of hot sluts on the side."

Max chose that moment to leave the room.

The girls returned shortly after. After depositing their bags on the floor, they all surrounded Sean to see if he was okay and to hear what exactly had transpired. Sean neglected to tell them of his own infidelity. They were all suitably shocked by his story.

"I know what would cheer you up, Sean," Liz's had butterflies flying all around her tummy. "How about you and I go out to dinner tonight? Just the two of us?"

There was a shocked silence. Everyone was looking at the door. Max was standing there, frozen. Maria looked stunned. Max backed out of the doorway and returned to their bedroom.

"Sure babe," Sean grinned as he stared at the doorway. "Never should have let you go in the first place."

* * *

Max was almost finished his packing when Elizabeth returned a little sheepishly to their room.

"Thank you," she stood with her back against the closed door. "For the way you handled that. It was, uh, very realistic."

"All part of the service," he shrugged.

"And thanks for not showing me up down there. I mean, you could have totally humiliated me."

"Why would I do that?" Max stopped and looked across the room at her.

"I just figured..." she left it hanging.

"Well," Max snapped his Gucci suitcase shut. "I guess I'm done here. It would be kind of awkward if I'm still around, huh?"

"Oh," Liz nodded. "Yeah. I'm sorry that I kind of ruined your Christmas."

"That's okay," Max grinned. "It's not like I had anything better planned. And you did hire me to help you get back together with Sean, right? And that sure looks like a shoe in. Anyway, I'm nearly finished here. Maybe it would be better if you waited up here while I slink off looking suitably... heartbroken."

"Oh, okay," Elizabeth gave a slow nod.

"I'll, uh, lock your car next to the Law Library. You know where that is?"

"Yeah," she confirmed. "I can get one of the others to give me a ride home. Sean, maybe."

"Well... good luck, Elizabeth."

"Thanks. Uh, you too. Oh, here. Before you go... I, uh... I got you this."

She gave Max a gift wrapped card.

"You didn't have to do that," Max smiled. "But while we're here, uh..." Max handed her a small box.

Opening his card, Max found a Barnes and Noble gift certificate for $100.

"Thank you," he smiled. "This will come in really handy."

Liz opened her box to reveal a small figurine of a cat carved from a soft stone.

"This is awesome," she smiled.

"Thank you," Max had a look of pride on his face.

"You made this?" Liz had a look of surprise.

"Uh, yeah," he shrugged. "Well..."

"Yeah, I, uh... I better not come down, huh?"

"No," Max shook his head. "Well... bye then."

"Yeah. Bye."

Max reached across and kissed her softly on her cheek before pulling her into a tight hug.

"Bye," he whispered into her ear.

He released her and picked up the case.

"Oh," he paused. "Here's my address. You can send me the check when you're ready. Because it wasn't me who seduced Tess, pay me what you figure I was worth, okay?"

"'Kay," Liz whispered, looking down at the hand written address.

She didn't look up again until Max had closed the door behind him.

With the exception of Sean and Vicky, everyone was waiting by the black BMW. Maria pulled him into a surprisingly fierce hug.

"I'm sorry it never worked out, Max," she told him. "You kind of grew on me. Especially after the way I saw you with Elizabeth these last two days."

"You grew on me, too, Maria," Max hugged her back.

Isabel and Courtney just said how nice it was to have met him. Neither really knew what to say. Jesse merely gave a nod.

"Well, so long, Max," Michael shook him by the hand. "If you ever get down our way, maybe we can hook you up with one of our girls. Better than those from Boston, I hear." Michael handed him a phone number.

"I gotta admit," Alex also shook his hand. "I think you might have been better for Elizabeth than Sean could ever be. But... but he's my best friend, you know? But... Anyway, good luck and all that."

Max gave them all a cheery wave and climbed into the car. He reversed out of the drive, turned and drove away.

From the window of the bedroom that they had shared, Elizabeth watched him until the car vanished behind the snowdrifts. With a heavy sigh, she turned to look at her super sexy dress. There was a knock at the door and before she could even react, Maria had entered.

"I hope you know what you are doing," Maria shook her head. "'Cause that bridge you talked about? It's here."

* * *

Two and a half hours and one coffee break later, Max was back in Cambridge. His first task was to stop at a gas station on the edge of town. After filling the tank, he bought some groceries at the convenience store next door. As he had promised Elizabeth, he then drove to the Law Library and locked her car there. She had a spare set of keys. Taking his suitcase in one hand and his groceries in the other, Max started his long walk home, through the snow.

There were still a few Santa Clauses out to catch the last minute shoppers. After putting down his case, Max reached into his pocket and pulled out a fistful of bills of small denominations. He dropped it all in the collection pot.

"Merry Christmas, Santa," Max smiled at the man and handed him a pre-wrapped sandwich. "And I hope your New Year is a better one."

"You too, buddy." Nodded with appreciation. "You too."

Finally back at his tenement block, Max climbed the steps. There was no need to sneak because he was up to date with his rent. There was a chill to his room when he opened the door, but at least he had warmer clothes this time. He made himself a cup of coffee and a cheese sandwich. Max couldn't help reacting to the poor taste of the instant coffee.

"Not even close to real coffee," he shrugged. "Made with half hot milk and a shot of vanilla."

He put a piece of cheese next to hole in the floorboard.

"Merry Christmas, Mickey," he called. "I hope you had other sources of food besides me while I was gone."

Mickey appeared from his hole and started to eat the cheese.

"I think you would have liked her," Max sat down on his old chair while he tore small pieces from his sandwich and ate them. "Though I'm not sure how she would have reacted to you."

Max reached into his pocket and pulled out his phone. He peered at the window to check the time. He released a heavy sigh.

"Well, she's on her date with Sean, at last. She got her Christmas wish all right." He paused. "I hope she's happy with him."

Max looked at the rat.

"What? Okay, okay. I admit it. I liked her. All right then. I fell in love with her. Are you happy now? But come on. Let's face reality here. Someone like her with someone like me? Please. Nah, she'll be better off among her own kind."

Max opened a bar of chocolate and broke off two pieces. After getting ready for bed, he ate one of the pieces. The other, he threw across the floor.

"Merry Christmas, Mickey."

Max laid back on his bed in silence.

"Merry Christmas, Liz," he whispered.

Max rolled over and pulled the pillow over his head. The images of Elizabeth giving herself to Sean were too much to take.

I'll have a blue Christmas without you
I'll be so blue just thinking about you.
Decorations of red, on a green Christmas tree
Won't be the same dear, if you're not here with me

And when those blue snowflakes starts falling
That's when those blue memories start calling
You'll be doin' all right, with your Christmas of white,
But I'll have a blue, blue, blue, blue Christmas.

You'll be doing all right, with your Christmas of white,
But I'll have a blue, blue, blue, blue Christmas.

Last Christmas - Part 6 - Conclusion

Post by WR »

Well, here is the conclusion to my little Christmas Story. I do hope that you have enjoyed the ride. I enjoyed writing it. :)

I am sorry for the delay, and have to confess that it's not entirely Jen or Jeannine's fault. I have been rather busy with a special visitor this holidays (my Dad over from Canada.) So, I'm sure you will forgive me. :)

I will recomence posting Red Shift and Parisienne Walkways on Friday. Hope to see you all over there. :)

Day 7 - CHRISTMAS DAY

The First Noel

Max's mind had been in way too much turmoil to sleep properly that night. Even the cold chill that pervaded his room seemed far more uncomfortable than usual. His sleep could only be described as fitful. As the daylight started to peek through his broken window, Max gave up and climbed out of bed. Shivering in the cold, he washed in the freezing water at his sink and quickly dressed.

"Morning, Mickey," Max spotted the rat poking his nose through the flooring. "Merry Christmas. Come for your breakfast?"

Max made himself a cup of tea and then produced two bagels. Cutting them both in half, he spread the entire contents of a pack of cream cheese across them. Squashing the halves together, Max broke a piece off and placed it on the floor near to the hole.

"The stuff of Kings," Max licked his lips. "But don't get used to it. We have a long winter to get through."

Chewing his breakfast, Max couldn't help surveying his surroundings.

"At least we have one decoration," Max nodded at the card Elizabeth had given him.

The gift certificate had been safely tucked away with the rest of the money he still had.

After clearing away the breakfast things, Max prepared for another treat. He had bought himself a packet of instant Latte powder. Mixing it into his cup, he smiled as he produced his piece de resistance, a small bottle of vanilla food flavoring.

"It's not as good as vanilla syrup," he spoke to no one in particular because Mickey had left. "But it's better than nothing."

He took a gulp of the coffee and smacked his lips. Mickey reappeared.

"Sorry, sport. Somehow, I think coffee is not a good idea for you."

The rat started to scavenge for the crumbs he had left behind.

"I expect she's waking up to her best Christmas ever," Max sighed. "In 'his' arms. And he just doesn't deserve her. He brings out the worst side of her, you know. No, really. He does. You should have seen her that day we spent the whole time together. When she wasn't thinking about him, she was just so..." Max sighed again. "Adorable."

"I know, I know. You're thinking I should have told her what Sean said, right? About how he's been seeing Vicky behind everyone's backs? How he treats women. But... but how could I do that to her? And that makes me worse than her friends. They don't tell her out of some kind of loyalty to Sean... But me? I just don't want her to hate me any more. And I know that really, she's just obsessed with him and not in love... I mean... maybe she can change him, right? People can change, can't they?"

The knock at his door was both loud and surprising. Max looked at the door in shock. No one ever came over.

"How should I know who it is," he turned to Mickey. "Are 'you' expecting any company? Goofy, perhaps?"

There was some more knocking.

"So why don't 'you' answer it. It's never for me."

The caller knocked a third time.

"All right, all right," Max called, heading for the door. He started to open it. "I'm just..."

Max's face dropped in sheer surprise. Elizabeth was standing in his doorway. She wore a red jacket, trimmed in white simulated fur. She wore a matching red mini skirt, white leggings and a pair of black, knee-length high-heeled boots. Her long dark hair was in waves cascading over her shoulders and a red hat with white trim was perched on top of her head. She looked positively gorgeous.

"...coming," Max finished.

The pair stared at one another.

"Elizabeth," Max finally managed to squeak, breaking the silence.

"Ho, ho, ho," Elizabeth smiled at him.

"Shouldn't you have come down my chimney?" Max broke into a grin, his eyes taking all of her in again.

"What?" Elizabeth rolled her eyes before looking down at herself. "And get soot all over this outfit? You can tell that Santa Claus is a man, can't you?"

"Uhm..." Max nodded. "What are you doing here, Elizabeth?"

"I made a list," she shrugged. "I checked it twice. And now I've come to find out if you've been naughty or nice."

"Uh huh," Max started to laugh. "So what's the verdict?"

"Nice, Max," Elizabeth smiled at him. "Definitely nice. You're probably the nicest person I know."

"So that means I get a present?" Max raised his eyebrows.

"As a matter of fact, it does," Elizabeth nodded. "Only..." She suddenly looked worried. "I'm not sure if you want it."

"I see," Max frowned. "So...?"

"Well, you see," she looked down at the ground. "The others figured that you deserve a decent Christmas Day. They don't like the idea of you being on your own. Uhm... Neither do I. They want you to come back and spend the day with us."

"I see," Max nodded. "And what about Sean? What does he say to all this?"

"Uhm... no," she shook he head. "There's uh, no need to worry about what he wants."

"But I'll be in the way, Elizabeth," he looked down. "He's going to be crowing and shit. To be honest, I can do without that, really."

"No, no," Elizabeth shook her head. "You see, I... uh... well... There's something I need to explain, Max. About me. I mean, the most you know about me is that... well... I guess you must think I'm pretty shallow, huh? I'm not really like that. And my friends... You see, we grew up together. The six of us. And Sean, he's always been, like... our unofficial leader. So we all figure that we kind of... owe him our loyalty. We kind of... let him get away with things maybe we shouldn't.

"And then there's my family..." She took a deep breath. "You see... I love my parents, dearly. And I would do just about anything for them. I mean, they've given me so much, you know? And they do so much for me. And so when they said that they thought that Sean and I would be a great match... I guess I convinced myself that they were right and so I believed that I loved Sean. Only I never saw that he was really... My Mom used to say that I could never really see the wood for the trees. And I never really understood what that meant until yesterday. But they're just as bad as me, really. They think he's something kind of wonderful. Anyway, I can get a little bitchy when it comes to Sean."

"No," Max grinned. "Really? I never noticed."

"Anyway," Elizabeth smiled at his sarcasm. "I'm sorry for the way I treated you. I'm sorry that I behaved so badly toward you when you didn't deserve to be treated like that at all. I judged you when I had no right to do so. Max... I didn't go to dinner with Sean last night."

Max blinked, not sure if he heard her correctly.

"You didn't?" he queried.

"No," Elizabeth shook her head. "I was all ready to go. I got changed into that dress I bought and I felt like a million dollars, Max. And when I looked into the mirror, wondering what Sean would see, I realized. I didn't really care what he thought. It was then that I knew that I never bought the dress for Sean to see. I bought it for you. Only... I didn't realize this until it was too late and you had left. And I let you go. You see... with you... I couldn't see the wood..."

"Oh," Max nodded slowly.

"So... so I changed. Into some jeans. I told Sean that we could still go to dinner, but only as friends. I told him that I didn't want to start a relationship with him."

"So how did he take that?" Max raised a single eyebrow.

"Not very well," Elizabeth shook her head. "He was really pissed off, Max. He started yelling at me, calling me names that weren't very nice... Like, tease and stuff. I think he was going to, uhm... attack me or something. Because the next thing I know is that Michael and Jesse are pinning him to the ground and Alex is standing right in front of me, between me and where Sean had been standing. Anyway, he totally flipped out and left. So did Vicky."

"I'm, uh... sorry," Max looked down at the ground.

"Well..." Elizabeth started to smile again. "The whole atmosphere seemed better after he left. I mean, looking back, Sean has been a real class jerk. He never helped out and he spent all his spare time on those Nintendo games. And he keeps putting people down all the time. I never saw that because I was trying to see the same person my Mom and Dad saw. Uhm... I guess I finally saw who the real loser is, Max. And it isn't you. Sean's had everything. His whole life, he's had everything handed to him. And then there's you. You've had everything taken away from you and yet you still keep on giving. That was a nice thing you did for those handicapped kids."

Max didn't know what to say.

"Anyway, we called Kyle and Tess on their cell phones straight away and asked them to come back. They agreed. Only you don't have a cell phone, or if you do, I don't know what your number is. Do you have one? A cell phone, I mean?"

"I do," Max nodded. "But..."

"Never mind," Elizabeth smiled. "So I wanted to borrow someone's car and come to get you. But they wouldn't let me. They said it was too late for me to be out in such icy conditions and that I could set out first thing this morning. Michael drove me," she indicted out toward the front of the building. "He dropped me at my car where you left it. He's on his way back to Connecticut, back to Maria now. Anyway, here I am. Max? What do you say? Will you come back with me and spend your Christmas with us?" Elizabeth swallowed. "With me?"

"Is that what 'you' want, Elizabeth?"

"It is, Max," she nodded emphatically. "I really do want you to come back with me. Or if you prefer, we could stay in Boston. But I would really love to spend the day with you, Max."

"I'd love to, Elizabeth," Max nodded, causing Elizabeth to break out in a huge smile. "We'll go back to Connecticut together."

"You know what, Max?" she looked away to one side. "Could you start calling me 'Liz' again? I kind of like the way you say it."

"Okay, Liz," Max chuckled. "I'd love to spend Christmas with you and your friends."

They said there'll be snow at Christmas,
They said there'll be peace on earth,
But instead it just kept on raining,
A veil of tears for the Virgin birth.

I remember one Christmas morning,
The Winter's light and a distant choir,
And the peal of a bell and that Christmas tree smell,
And eyes full of tinsel and fire.

They sold me a dream of Christmas,
They sold me a silent night,
They told me a fairy story,
'Til I believed in the Israelite.

And I believed in Father Christmas,
And I looked to the sky with excited eyes,
Then I woke with a yawn in the first light of dawn,
And I saw him and through his disguise.

I wish you a hopeful Christmas,
I wish you a brave New Year,
All anguish, pain and sadness,
Leave your heart and let your road be clear.

They said there'd be snow at Christmas,
They said there'd be peace on earth,
Hallelujah! Noel!, be it Heaven or Hell,
The Christmas we get, we deserve.

While Max packed a few of his new clothes into his suitcase, Liz could not help looking around at the bleak flat in which Max lived. She tried so very hard not to let her feelings show, but she couldn't help it.

"I'm sorry," he shrugged, looking around at his meager possessions. "It's uh, all I could afford."

He suddenly felt embarrassed by his surroundings, something that he had never felt before.

"I'm sorry," she gave him a weak smile of support. "I mean, I've never even had to think of things like this before. When I said that I wanted to attend Harvard, Daddy made everything happen. I was accepted almost straight away, probably because he paid for a new building or something. He set up my tuition funds, he bought me an apartment close to campus, he ordered all the books I will ever need. I... I never really thought about it. I never really considered that there were people out there struggling to make ends meet."

"Does it make a difference?" Max tilted his head. "That I don't have any money, I mean."

"No," Liz shook her head. She looked up. "Should it?"

"Well, no," he shrugged. "It shouldn't. But it always does. I mean, what if I asked you out on a date? What would you say then?"

"I have no idea," Liz smirked. "I've never been good with hypothetical situations. You can't really say how you will react until it happens for real. So why don't you try?"

"What?" Max gasped.

"Why don't you try asking me out on a date and seeing what I would say."

"Get real, Liz," Max sighed. "It could never work. What would your parents say? They would always look down on me."

"Only if you let them," Liz pointed out. "You never once let me or my friends look down on you."

"But I was never trying to make them like me, Liz," Max shrugged.

"Yet they do all the same," Liz pointed out. "Like you, that is."

"But your parents..."

"Will have to get over it and accept that they have no say in who I do or do not date."

"But I don't really know you that well, Liz," Max continued to object. "I know you better than I did a week ago, but this..."

"You sound like you don't want to date me at all," Liz frowned. "Why don't you try asking me anyway? I might even say no."

"Liz," Max gulped. "Would you like to go to dinner with me one night? Maybe even take in a movie or something?"

"Yes, Max," Liz nodded emphatically. "I'd love to."

Max broke into a smile.

"Oh my God!" Liz squealed in terror. Throwing herself at Max's back and jumping up onto his bed, she hid behind him.

"What? What?" Max turned to see what had frightened her.

"Max, there's a rat in your room!" Liz pointed at the rodent who was poking his head through the hole.

"Ah," Max started to laugh. "That's no rat. That's my roommate. He's come to check you out, I guess. Say hello to Mickey, although I have to confess that last night, he came this close to being renamed Sean."

"You have a rat in your room and you named him?" Liz was shaking her head.

"What can I say," Max shrugged.

"You really have to get a life," Liz laughed.

I don't want a lot for Christmas
There is just one thing I need
I don't care about presents
Underneath the Christmas tree
I just want you for my own
More than you could ever know
Make my wish come true ...
All I want for Christmas
Is you ...

I don't want a lot for Christmas
There is just one thing I need
I don't care about presents
Underneath the Christmas tree
I don't need to hang my stocking
There upon the fireplace
Santa Claus won't make me happy
With a toy on Christmas day
I just want you for my own
More than you could ever know
Make my wish come true
All I want for Christmas is you ...
You baby

I won't ask for much this Christmas
I won't even wish for snow
I'm just gonna keep on waiting
Underneath the mistletoe
I won't make a list and send it
To the North Pole for Saint Nick
I won't even stay awake to
hear those magic reindeer click
'Cause I just want you here tonight
Holding on to me so tight
What more can I do
Baby all I want for Christmas is you
You ...

All the lights are shining
So brightly everywhere
And the sound of children's
Laughter fills the air
And everyone is singing
I hear those sleigh bells ringing
Santa won't you bring me the one
I really need - won't you please
Bring my baby to me ...

Oh I don't want a lot for Christmas
This is all I'm asking for
I just want to se baby
Standing right outside my door
Oh I just want him for my own
More than you could ever know
Make my wish come true
Baby all I want for Christmas
Is you ...

All I want for Christmas
Is you baby

Free Wheeling

Max was driving the car toward Connecticut. Liz was sitting in the passenger seat, twisted so that she could watch him. The roads were empty, which was just as well. Max was having difficulty keeping his eyes on the road.

"What?" he finally asked her.

"So you were going to rename Mickey, huh?" she smirked. "You were going to call him Sean?"

"Uh, Yeah," Max nodded.

"How come?"

"How come I was going to rename him?" Max raised an eyebrow.

"No," Liz rolled her eyes. "Why Sean?"

"Cause he's all take, take, take," Max shrugged. "He never gives. And on account of the fact that he put me in mind of someone I was kind of jealous of. That's all."

"Jealous, huh?"

"Yeah," Max nodded.

"Why?"

"Because he was going to get to share his life with someone who under her shell was a wonderful, warm, vibrant human being while I was stuck with a... a rat."

"I guess I would have been stuck with the worst rat of them both," Liz started to laugh.

"Yeah," Max nodded. "Mickey's okay. I've had worse roomies. The Roach family were particularly unpleasant.

"Ew, Max!"

"Well, beggars can't be choosers," Max shrugged.

"But I'm hardly the warmest person you've met, Max," Liz went quiet. "I mean, I've been pretty shallow lately. I've been a complete...."

"Don't finish that sentence, Liz," Max placed a hand on hers. "Anyone who takes the time to explain the creation of snow to a bunch of small children has to have some warmth. I mean, you didn't have to do that."

"You saw that?" Liz looked away. "I didn't think anyone was there."

"I heard it," Max nodded.

They fell silent for a dozen miles or so. It was Liz who finally broke it.

"So how do you do it?" she asked. "How do you live from one day to the next? I mean, don't you have a scholarship?"

"Not a full one," Max shook his head. "It covers maybe two semesters worth of tuition. But all the rest... the books, food, rent... I kind of have to work every spare minute I can. It means that my homework is kind of rushed and I'm only just maintaining the required grades. And I can't afford to go home during holidays and stuff... not that my stepfather cares, but my mother... But I figure this is important. I can have fun when I graduate and start earning some good money for a change."

"Being a big city corporate lawyer or something?"

"No," Max shook his head. "I want to help people who need help, Liz. You know, the little people. People like my Mom and I when we needed help and no one wanted to help. Sure, I want to earn some good money but I also want to help. So I thought that I could maybe work for a few days a week for an established practice and the rest of the time doing pro bono stuff. Help for the little people."

"That sounds so noble, Max," Liz smiled with affection. "And its just so you."

Homecoming Queen

"Are you sure they're all okay with this?" Max's nerves started to affect him now that they had reached Mohawk Mountain.

"Do you even have to ask, Max?" Liz shook her head. "Do you really think that they would have let me come to Boston to get you if they weren't? You know, Michael can be a pain in the ass sometimes but as soon as I said I wanted to come and get you, he volunteered to drive me."

"But what about last night... that scene with Sean..."

"They know the truth, Max," Liz gave a dry smile. "I explained everything to them. Including all the stuff about the contract. And you don't have to worry, I'll still pay you."

"You know you don't have to do that, Liz," Max looked at her. "I'll tear up my contract."

"Yes I do, Max," she nodded. "We made a deal and you kept your end of the bargain, perfectly. You did everything I asked, so, you know? I want to pay you."

"You make me sound like a kept man," Max laughed.

"Oh," Liz blushed. "No, I... Look, Max. I have money and you don't. Okay? I hired you and you deserve to be paid. Besides, you can't keep on going the way you are. You have to be able to spend more time studying or else you will fail your classes and then those little people won't be getting the help they need."

Max looked at her for a moment.

"Well," he sighed. "When you put it like that."

"Besides," Liz smirked. "I so do not want to spend my dates at MacDonald's."

Have yourself a merry little Christmas.
Let your heart be light,
From now on our troubles
Will be out of sight.

Have yourself a merry little Christmas,
Make the Yuletide gay,
From now on our troubles
Will be miles away.

Here we are as in olden days,
Happy golden days of yore,
Faithful friends who are dear to us
Gather near to us once more.

Through the years
We all will be together
If the Fates allow,
Hang a shining star
Upon the highest bough,
And have yourself
A merry little Christmas now.

Happy golden days of yore,
Faithful friends who are dear to us
Gather near to us once more.

Through the years
We all will be together
If the Fates allow,
Hang a shining star

"Looks like Kyle and Tess are here already," Max spotted their two cars on the driveway.

"They said they would set out first thing this morning," Liz nodded. "So they probably arrived around the time Michael dropped me in Boston."

"Well," Max took a deep breath as he pulled up the handbrake. "This is it."

"Relax," Liz placed her hand on his. "I already told you they want you here."

Everyone appeared through the front door. Hand in hand, the couples walked along the path to greet Max and Liz. Maria was the first one to meet him.

"Welcome home, girlfriend," she pulled him into a tight hug.

"Girlfriend?" Max mimed over Maria's shoulder at Liz.

Liz just smiled at him and gave a shrug as Maria let him go and Alex grasped him by the hand.

"You know," he smiled. "I'm really glad that Elizabeth found you. Because if you had never come into her life, we would have always been trapped by Sean's friendship."

"Do you really think that's what it was?" Max raised an inquiring eyebrow. "Friendship? The guy was a user. He was using you."

"We know that, now," Alex nodded. "But it took an... an outsider like you... Someone who wasn't intimidated by him or afraid of losing something..." he looked at Michael and Maria. "Someone like you to make us see what we ignored for too long. So thanks. And welcome to the family.

Jesse was next, shaking him by the hand.

"I'm going to need some time to get used to this," he would not look directly at Max. "I've been friends with Sean for a long time. But seeing him try to attack Elizabeth like that... It was kind of a shock. It's hard to take when someone you thought you knew turns violent against a young woman and tried to attack her. But Elizabeth likes you, so..."

From the way he said that last comment, and from the quick look at Liz, Max knew that Jesse was harboring hopes of a relationship with Liz himself. He knew that he would never be best friends with Jesse but he would make the effort. For Liz.

Isabel and Courtney both hugged him with warm friendship, welcoming him back. Michael expressed his pleasure at seeing him back and hoped that he would be a regular visitor. Then it was the turn of Kyle and Tess.

"You don't harbor any ill will against us, do you?" Kyle was a little wary.

"Why would I do that?" Max frowned.

"Well... in a way, it was our little... uh, tête-à-tête that let Sean make his play for Elizabeth."

"Nope," Max shook his head. "No ill will from me."

"Well, come on guys," Michael started to urge them toward the house. "Lunch is nearly ready and there's nothing we can't say out here that we can't say indoors. Besides which.... There's coffee and stuff indoors."

"I could do with a coffee," Max nodded.

"Made with half hot milk?" Liz grinned.

"And maybe a shot of vanilla," Max reached for her hand and held it tightly.

Hand in hand, the couples all headed indoors.

"So," Maria winked at Liz. The girls were clearing up after allowing the boys to kick back and relax in the living room. "I take it that this is the start of something special?"

"I think so," Liz nodded with a huge smile. "He did ask me out on a date."

"It's a start," Maria smirked.

"He's worried about our difference in... status," Liz sighed. "He's afraid that my parents won't approve of him."

"Well, I think he has a point, Elizabeth," Maria gave her a look of sympathy.

"Maria." Liz looked up at her. "After all these years... you can call me Liz if you like."

"Liz, huh?" Maria grinned.

"Yeah," Liz nodded with a pink face. "It kind of grew on me."

"Just like he did, huh?"

"Yeah."

"So where do you two go from here?" Maria widened her eyes.

"Well," Liz looked down to the floor. "We've not really had much of an opportunity to discuss anything beyond our date. But I know where 'I' want to go."

"And that is?"

"I want Max to move in with me. I want him to be able to study hard and get the grades I know he's capable of. I want him to achieve his dreams. And I want to grow old together with him, after a long, happy and fun-filled life together."

"Kids?" Maria raised a single eyebrow.

"Two," Liz nodded with a grin. "A boy and a girl."

"A little Max and a little Liz, huh?" Maria started to chuckled.

"Absolutely!"

"So," Maria gave a wicked smirk. "When will you start practicing?"

"Well," Liz winked. "I'm kind of hoping tonight."

The day ended far too quickly. After an evening spent playing various games, with the couples forming teams, Liz pulled Max behind her, wishing her friends a good night.

"You, too," Maria winked.

They all watched them climb the stairs, barely concealing their knowing smirks. All except for Alex. Maria caught the agitated look of guilt on his face.

"Alex?" she frowned. "What's up?"

"Uhm, listen, Maria..." his face started to turn red. "There's something I need to tell you."

"Uh huh," Maria narrowed her eyes.

"It's cutting me up inside because it's something that I've known about for a long time, now. I've been feeling guilty ever since what Max said to me about why I didn't do anything to Sean after he hurt Liz last Christmas."

Maria gave a nervous fidget.

"It's just... I swore to him that I'd never tell a living soul. He made me promise."

"If by 'him'," Maria rolled her eyes, "you mean my delinquent cousin, then I don't think you owe him anything anymore, Alex. So spill."

"Well," he took a deep breath. "Last year, you know how Sean had been chasing after Tess for some time, yeah?"

"We were officially a couple," Tess nodded. "But we had agreed... well, I agreed... I wasn't ready for a physical relationship, yet. We'd been seeing each other for a month, keeping it fairly discreet. Especially around you guys. I thought him giving me that pendant was his way of showing commitment."

"Well," Alex nodded at her. "We'd been up here all week, and Sean hadn't had the chance to, erm... get any. So Christmas Eve, he started drinking early, 'cause he had a huge case of blue balls. So when Liz was getting... friendly with him, I guess he decided not to look a gift horse in the mouth."

"We all know the story of Liz giving him her virginity that night, Alex," Maria shrugged.

"I didn't," Tess shook her head.

"What you don't know," Alex continued, "was that Sean poured Liz a rather large drink. And you know how Liz can't hold her alcohol. I guess Sean never knew how infatuated Liz was with him and he had already planned her seduction. So he got her drunk, too. Only Sean... he, erm... I came downstairs for a drink. And I couldn't help seeing them. Liz was pretty drunk, and she was half-undressed. Sean was already naked. Sean just pulled her pants off when it happened.

"What?" everyone hung to his words.

"He... he had a slight mishap. Premature ejaculation."

"What?" Maria gasped.

"Yeah," Alex nodded. "So he told Liz that she was the best ever, and made me promise to keep my mouth shut. She wanted to believe it... so she did. At the time, I thought... but then... Oh, god, Maria," Alex wailed. "What kind of friend am I?"

No one spoke. Alex started to walk toward the stairs, a look of purpose in her eyes.

"Now where are you going?"

"I'm going to tell Liz that she's still a virgin," Alex half turned.

"No you're not," Maria shook her head with a grin. "Let them figure it out for themselves. If I know Liz, there will be plenty of evidence. We'll call it our Christmas present to them."

"Aren't you supposed to open your presents in the morning?" Michael smirked.

"Some presents are best opened late at night when you finally figure out who you're supposed to be in love with. And I can tell you something. Those two are so very much in love with each other. I think that they are in for a very Happy New Year.

I saw Mommy kissing Santa Claus,
Underneath the mistletoe last night.
She didn't see me creep
Down the stairs to have a peep,
She thought that I was tucked up
In my bedroom fast asleep.

Then, I saw Mommy tickle Santa Claus
Underneath his beard so snowy white,
Oh, what a laugh it would have been,
If Daddy had only seen,
Mommy kissing Santa Claus last night.
