Chapter 1
Liz Parker woke somewhere along the stretch of road between New Mexico and Colorado known as 1-67. Disoriented and stiff from sleeping in the car, she blearily took in her surroundings.
Her best friend since forever, Maria Deluca was at the wheel of Liz’s new (but gently used) 1994 Honda Civic, a graduation present from her parents. Maria’s pale green eyes were covered by her black Gucci knock-off sunglasses, her long dirty blonde hair loosely bound into a simple twist.
They two young women had taken turns driving through the night, refusing to rest at a roadside hotel. The promise of their destination was too alluring to even consider stopping. And as Maria had so succinctly put it “The rooms in those cheap motels are like the porno version of Aladdin.” Liz hadn’t minded, she been away from the lake and the cottage for far too long.
The hot sun poured down through the windshield. Liz noted that her shoulders had darkened slightly already. She couldn’t wait to spend the next few weeks lounging on the dock, soaking in the sun until her skin was golden. Yawning she stretched and reached to lift her long dark tresses off of her sweaty neck.
“Welcome back to the land of the living sunshine!” Maria chirped at Liz, unbelievably perky due to, judging by the pile of empty paper cups, her third coffee.
Liz yawned in reply. “Please Chica,” Maria said scrunching up her pixie nose, “Get some mouthwash or something. You could so use some.”
Sticking out her tongue was the best retort Liz could muster. “Where are we?” she asked her voice husky from sleep.
“As far as I know, since my trusty navigator has been asleep for the past few hours, we are only an hour or so away from the lake and Grandma Claudia’s cottage.”
“Sorry Maria, I was really tired after my last driving shift. And I did let you sleep for nearly five hours before you took over.” She pointed out.
“I know, I know.” Maria grumbled half-heartedly. “It’s just so hot already and the air-conditioning is a no show.”
Liz fiddled with the a/c controls, banging on the dashboard a few times for good measure. The air conditioning sputtered to life, the vents blowing warm air.
“Why your parents didn’t buy you a new car with a reliable cooling system and decent stereo is beyond me.” Keeping one hand on the wheel Maria fanned her self with other.
“You know that my parents can’t afford Harvard and a brand new car, even with my scholarship.” Liz replied calmly, used to Maria’s good natured whining.
Maria sighed and glanced at Liz quickly, pushing her glasses on top of her head. “I can’t believe that this is our last summer together, Lizzie. Soon you’re going to be studying to become a famous molecular biologist while I make it big as a singer in New York City.”
Removing a sweaty hand from the wheel of the car, she grasped Liz’s in hers, squeezing tightly. “It’s just hard to believe that in less than two months we’ll be living apart from each other, for the first time ever.”
Liz smiled as tears threatened to fill her chocolate eyes. Not wanting to start their vacation together on a sad note, she said “No matter what Maria, you’ll always be my friend. Even when you’re CD’s don’t sell anymore, and you’ve been in rehab for drug addiction or you’re on your third husband, I’ll still love you.”
Maria tried her best to look offended as the car filled with her laughter. “As long as I don’t get fat or a boob job, that’s okay. And you know me well enough to know that the only thing I sniff is cypress oil.”
Liz laughed along with her trying to imagine her friend older and overweight with Pamela Anderson (or was it Lee now, Liz could never keep up with celebrity gossip like Maria) breasts. Giggling she got out her journal as Maria fiddled with the radio, finally settling on a station that played 80’s music.
Liz stroked the worn leather cover of her most prized possession; her journal. She had been writing in these “memory books” as her father affectionately called them for years. This particular one had been with her through most of her high school days. There were only a few more pages left before she ended this chapter of her life, and began a new one. Just thinking about Harvard had her stomach turning knots and butterflies flitting around. She was so incredibly nervous and excited at the same time. It was a new beginning for Liz; time to start her life as an adult.
Liz smiled warmly at Maria, who was busy singing along with Boy George to “Karma Chameleon” at the top of her lungs. Liz was so happy that Maria had agreed to spend the summer with her at the cottage her Grandma Claudia had left her when she died. It had taken some convincing though. Maria at first hadn’t looked forward to living in a two bedroom cottage with no television and no towns nearby with populations over 1200. But Liz had quietly persuaded her with talk of the boys on the lake, and the parties that the cottagers had, as well as the dance at the end of the summer at the Peachtree Lodge.
Her parents were at first reluctant, it was after all the last summer they would have with their ‘baby girl’ before she went off to school. But Liz’s mother, recognizing the determined look on her daughters face, had given in quickly and helped to sway her husband.
Maria had given up on “Karma Chameleon” and was now doing her best breathless Marilyn Monroe impression to the Divinyls “I Touch Myself”. Liz just snorted and picked up her pen.
Dear Diary,
I still can’t quite believe that in less than two months, I’ll be going to Harvard! This has been my dream for so many years and it’s finally coming true.
Not with out a little pain though. I guess it’s true when they say that anything worth having isn’t free. My two best friends Alex and Maria will be miles away following their own dreams. At least Maria is with me right now, I know we'll have so much fun this summer.
Poor Alex, he wanted to come with us so badly, but he had a wonderful opportunity to do an internship with some other students at the Las Cruces University. He’s a genius with computers and I know he’ll be happy once he gets his hands on the school’s supercomputer.
This summer at Grandma Claudia’s cottage is going to be amazing, I just know it. As Maria would say, I’m getting ‘vibes’ about it. I hope that we’ll meet some people, maybe even some cute guys.
I wouldn’t mind a summer romance… Things have been pretty quiet for me on the romance front. I’ve never had a real relationship, and I don’t want to go to school as little Lizzie Parker, super nerd. Never really had a boyfriend, never fallen in love.
I hope I’ll meet someone this summer who can help me change that.
“We’re here!” Maria’s voice shook Liz out of her reverie. Liz’s face broke out into a deep grin as she took in her surroundings. The deep blue of the Aurora Lake, peppered with boats, the pretty cottages and cabins that perched along its shores. Liz inhaled deeply, the water’s scent making her feel instantly like she was coming home. The desert has never held its sway over her like this body of water could.
She closed the journal and tucked it away and enjoyed the remainder of the drive to the cottage.
