Liz walked somberely up the path to her house she had lived in all her life. Her best friend Tess Harding had just been buried after dieing from terminal cancer. It had been such a blow, they had no idea until it was too late to do anything.
Some kid was sat on the porch dressed in a little sailor suit looking embarrassed as hell, she saw that there was a deep sadness in his eyes.
"Are you my momma now?" he asked catching her surprised, she stepped back with shock
"Who are you?"
"My momma said that if anythin happened to her that I'd come live with you"
"Your momma?" she asked trying to regain some composure
"My momma was Tess Harding, I lived with her and her boyfriend Kyle but he was mean to me" Liz knew that Tess had no family. She looked over the young boy and tried to see of her late best friend in him but all she could see was his eyes. Ice blue just like hers
"Oh um... I guess you better come in for the night" she said holding out her hand to the three year old boy "What's your name"
"Jacob. Jacob Harding momma" he said holding out his arms. She had no clue how long he had been sat there but when she lifted him up he was cold.
"Oh you're cold. Quick let's get you inside and warm you up" she said hurrying inside.
The grass was soggy under her feet, her shoes squelched under the mud. She had been the only one to turn up, where were all her friends and family? Kyle was off standing near a tree in the distance with his hand on something she couldn't quite see. The priest looked round as she stood there. She couldn't be bothered to put her umbrella up against the weather. After droning out the words he said she fell to her knees and gingerly touched the coffin. Tess had been like a sister to her, the only one who cared after her parents were killed in that crash. Tess's brother Jake had been killed in the same accident and they had drifted together
Jacob sat on the stool shivering in his jammies that his new momma had quickly put on him after she stripped away his cold and soaked through clothes watching her hurry round the kitchen grabbing items and putting them on to cook or in a microwave to heat. He yanwed sleepily and climbed up onto the cook top, there was a space where she hadn't dumped food or packaging and he curled up and shivered to sleep.
"I don't know what you like so... aww" she said as she turned round and saw him sleeping. He looked like a little angel with his dark brown hair curling around his forehead.
She switched everything off and then picked him up, his tiny arms curled around her neck as she carried him upstairs. She laid him down in her bed and made sure he was tucked in all warm and safe before grabbing the spare quilt from the cupboard and heading downstairs to make up the couch.
He opened his eyes and looked round, this wasn't the couch at Kyle's. Where was he?
"Momma?" he called out as he sat up then he remembered his momma had gone to heaven and she had made sure he went to her best friend. She was his momma now, Tess had made sure he knew that when she was sick. He pushed back the large heavy blanket and slid from the bed then padded along the hall. There were pictures of Liz and Tess on the wall, the two people who showed any amount of care for him.
"Mommy?" he whispered as he came down and saw the sun had already risen making the air humid, she was sleeping softly on the couch and he stood in the wide open doorway watching her. There was a thump at the door and she yelped before falling off the couch in the grip of sleep onto the hardwood floor.
She stood up and tried to recall why she had been on the couch, Maria hadn't broken up with anyone again had she? She opened the door and saw said Maria standing there with two steaming cups of coffee and a newspaper tucked under her arm.
"Mornin Chica, oh you aren't even dressed yet! We're supposed to open at nine. I got an advert in the paper so we should make big money today, it is the grand opening of Heavenly Coffee" she sauntered in and spotted him standing there with wide eyes.
"Hi little fella. I'm Maria" she smiled as she knelt down. He just gasped and hurried off. She stood up and looked at her friend "What's with the kid?"
"Tess was buried yesterday and I come home and find him sitting on the porch. Says that his momma, Tess, sent him to come here and live with me. He keeps calling me his mommy. I have no clue what to do"
"Whoa I had no idea she had a kid"
"Neither did I. She went away while she was sick, said she didn't want me to see her like that. Tess never mentioned she had a son"
"So what are you going to do?"
"I don't know"
"She have any family?"
"No, her parents died when she was a kid and Jake, her brother, was killed in that same crash that killed our parents"
"I think you should keep him. Keep him and we'll raise him together"
"Together?" Liz raised an eyebrow "Are you on that step then? You and Michael ready for kids"
"No. We're on an off moment and we're to the point of not talking. I could move back in here for a few months. Not permanently, you know my stuff is still in my old room"
"Yeah. Okay I'll keep him but I have no idea how to raise a kid,"
"I know, chill Liz. I'm here. So what's the little squirts name"
"Jacob. Jacob Parker" she whispered as she saw him peer round the door of the kitchen "My Son Jacob"
"Hey Jacob! Come out here and say hello to your aunty Maria!" she called handing the coffee to Liz. He stepped nervously out and she held out her arms
"I'm ya aunty Maria. Gonna spoil ya rotten" she announced and he hurried over and jumped in his arms
"You're my mommy's sister?"
"Better believe it. Now where's your clothes, Liz I think today is a take-your-kid-to-work-day"
"You know. I think it is too, I'll take him upstairs and get him changed. Can you try not to kill breakfast?"
"Sure, what's your poison"
"Anything that isn't trying to crawl off the plate" she shot back as she climbed the stairs with her new boy.
