Warning- It's not very long, and has not been beta'd. Check out the crappy title. Don't tell me I didn't warn ya!
Part 1 of 1
"Mommy, I wanna go alone!!!" Little Katie wailed as she adjusted her costume.
Her mom looked up from her position on the couch. "Now, sweetie, you know I can't let you go out on this dark, dangerous night all by yourself."
"But, moooooommmmm, it's Halloween!!! I wanna go alone with only my friends!!!"
"Katie, your father is going with you, and that is it, okay? I would have gone with you, but I am obviously too big and heavy to follow you around." She pointed to her large belly, which was currently carrying Katie's little brother. Jake, she and Michael had decided.
"Mommy, that isn't fair!!! Why can't both you and daddy come with me? Daddy's always so grumpy!"
"And for good reason," Michael grumbled, entering the room. "Maria, why the hell do I have wear this piece of crap?!"
"Michael, watch your tongue in front of your girl, or else," a stressed Maria screamed, not taking her eyes off the TV screen. Hormonal wives could be dangerous, he'd observed.
"All right, sweetie," he leaned in and kissed her forehead. "But still, why do I have to wear this?"
"Because, only then will you and Katie look good together trick-or-treating. And that is the end of discussion." She paused. "For both of you." She glared.
Father and daughter meekly nodded at the "mother" and silently went off to the other room.
Michael sighed and zipped his costume with his powers.
"Daddy, teach me how to do that too!"
"Not yet, sweetie. Next year, I swear."
"OK." She took her father's hand and let him towards the door.
And there they were, the infamous duo. Batman and Robin. Michael, being Robin, of course.....What? You try convincing Katie to give up the lead!
----------
"Trick or treat!" Katie gleefully rang the doorbell and sang.
Alex came and opened the door. What he saw in front of him almost sent him into cardiac arrest. And if he had gone into arrest, he would have died a happy man. Just seeing Michael...in that hideous..... Robin? costume, was enough to make Alex's life perfect.
"Happy Halloween, Uncle Alex!!!" Katie grinned at her favorite uncle. He was always her favorite over Uncle Max. Uncle Max was too....grumpy.
"Well, happy Halloween to you too, sweetie." He opened up the candy bag in his bands. "So, what'll it be?"
"Everything you got!" she said, delighted.
Alex grinned at his seven year old niece as she grabbed fistfuls of candy to stuff into her own bag. When she thought she'd had enough, she took her hand away and protectively clutched her own bag.
"And you, Robin? Whaddya want?" he smirked at a brooding Robin.
"Shut up, Whitman. You're just lucky that she's here, or I would've really kicked your ass!"
"Daddy said a dirty word, daddy said a dir-irty word!" Katie sing-sang.
Alex simply laughed. "You guys wanna come in for a while?"
Michael shrugged. It wasn't really up to him. It was all up to Batman, the real hero.
"Is Brian home?" Katie asked.
"Yup. No trick or treating for him, not with that broken arm of his." To Michael, he said, "You know how Isabel can get."
"Oh boy, do I!"
Katie rushed past Alex and Michael into the house. Michael sullenly entered the housed and plopped down on the couch.
"So, how'd you get yourself into this?"
"Hormonal Maria can be very persuasive," Michael grumbled, his eyes closed.
"Dude, I know," Alex remarked. "Remember when she was having Katie, how she made you, Max and me paint the baby's room?"
Michael nodded. He didn't tell him that she was planning to do the same thing with Jake's room too.
"So, how are you guys holding up?" he asked, changing the topic.
"Ok. Isabel's still a little freaked out about Brian's broken arm and all, but we're okay."
"Why doesn't she just heal it?"
"Oh, she wants him to have the human life."
"Dude, so do I. But I'd rather use my powers than see my baby girl cry."
"Yeah, I know. It's hard, but she's trying. She really wants everything to be normal."
"Don't we all?"
They sat in amiable silence for a while, before Isabel came down the stairs with a giggling Katie in tow.
Michael groaned. "What'd she do now?"
"Oh, nothing." Isabel waved her hand. "She was just playing around and broke a vase. But I fixed it, no harm done." She paused, staring at Michael. "Michael.....? I must say, nice outfit. So what are you, the Spandex god?"
"Funny Izzy, really, cracked me up."
"Sorry, sorry," she said, laughing hysterically, "it's just.....you...look...so cute!!!!!!!!! Damn, I wish I could Alex into one of those things."
"Don't even think about it," Alex replied.
"Daddy, can we go?" Katie pulled at her father's costume.
"Yeah, honey, sure," he replied, getting up. "I'll see you guys later," he said to Alex and Isabel as Katie dragged him to the door.
"Michael!" Isabel called after him as he left. "Tell Maria that Liz and I'll drop by tomorrow to see how she's doing."
"Okay!" he hollered back, barely able to keep up with an over-excited Katie.
Where will she take him now?
----------
"Aunt Lizzie!!!!!!!!!" Katie shrieked as her aunt opened the door for her.
Liz feigned surprise. "Well well, look who's here. It's Batman, here to free me from the clutch of evil."
"That's right," Katie declared. "So, where's the enemy? Where us Uncle Max?"
Liz giggled. She pointed towards the kitchen. Katie very quietly walked to the kitchen door, and burst in the kitchen, screaming with all her might. "AAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!" causing Max to drop the bowl of popcorn her was carrying.
"Jesus, Katie!!" Max exclaimed, resting his hand on the table to catch his breath. "Do not scare me like that."
"I'm not Katie. I'm the brave...... BATMAN!!!!!!"
"Well then, Mr. Batman, would you mind too much warning me before you plan to ambush me with your vocal chords, which are quite special might I add?"
"But the hero isn't supposed to warn the enemy!!?!" she wailed.
"Why, I believe you're right. My apologies."
"Accepted. Now stop torturing my aunt Liz or I might have to hurt you," she tried to make a glaring face.
"Well then, I'll stop immediately. Miss Liz?" he called out to Liz, who was standing with Michael in the hallway, a smirk on her face.
"Yes, Max?"
"I am honestly sorry if I have offended you in any way. Mr. Batman has made me realize how wrong it was of me, and I'd like a second chance."
"Hmm," Liz seemed to ponder over it for a minute. "granted."
"Woo-hoo! Batman's the champion. Uh-huh, I'm the champion!!!" Katie celebrated. "Daddy, let's go. I don't need candy, my job is done." And she ran out the front door, leaving a laughing Max and Liz in her wake. Michael simply trudged after her.
----------
"Mommy!! We're home!!" Katie said, slamming the front door behind her. Following her father, she went to the kitchen.
"Did you guys have fun?" Maria looked up from the magazine she was reading on the table.
"Oh yes, mommy. I had so much fun. We went to almost all the houses. And we met aunty Lizzie, and aunty Isabel, and uncle Alex, oh and uncle Max." she concluded.
"Wow! That must have been one eventful night!"
"It was," Michael grunted and leaned to give his wife of nine years a soft peck on the lips. Turning to Katie, he said, "Well, Katherine, I think it's past your bedtime, so off you go."
"Dadddyyyyyyy........"
"No excuses. Up!"
Katie hmmphed but relented. But before going, she went to her father and hugged him as tight as she could and kissed him smack on the cheek. "Thank you for taking me tonight daddy. I had a lot of fun."
She ran out of the room and up the stairs to her own room.
Michael stared lovingly after her. Maria put her arms around his waist. "Our baby girl's growing up," she remarked.
"She sure is," he replied, turning to Maria. He placed a gentle hand on her belly. The baby kicked. Both of them grinned through their tears. It was a wonderful Halloween, they both knew. And next year, they'd have one more person to share it with.
The End.
