Chapter 10
“I needs to get stuff.” Lonnie walked away from the group; she knew she was running away from the situation. She needed a breather, and never noticed the tall, lanky guy following her.
“I know it’s hard to take, but she’s got a point. Fixing this, she won’t happen. You need to get over your self and see the bigger picture.” Alex stood behind her, his arms crossed.
“Yous don’t know whats its like. I’s a princess of a burned out planet. I’s barely ‘member it, but those dim flashes is what kept me going, whiles living in dis squander.” Lonnie whipped around, her eyes narrowed. “You’ves always known dis planet is your pad. You can’t ‘magine what its like ta dream of… some’ing more den dis, and knowings once, yous had it.”
Alex shook his head. “You’re right, I don’t. This isn’t just about you; we are talking about a massive scale. I found out from her how I died. One of our own kills me and makes it look like suicide. Do you understand the pain of knowing your own death? You say you have dim memories of Antar, but can you remember dying? No? I know exactly what happens, but I can’t have my little personal mental breakdown! Why?! We have to save the world. Suck it up and deal. That woman has seen more horror then you or I could imagine. For her, I’ll push away my need to break. For your King and family, you need to do the same.” Alex’s voice was steel and a notch beneath yelling. It was a loud bark that he didn’t realize he had in him.
Lonnie was taken back. She had figured he tagged along for technical stuff, and the moral support cheerleader. She was wrong. That boy was hiding some serious backbone, and the strength that was there would be needed if they were to win this thing. She just hoped the others were as strong as he seemed to be. She mentally pulled her head out of her ass.
“Yous right. I’s sorry.” Lonnie conceded as she grabbed a duffle bag. “Tell Aves, I’s get her kit too.”
Alex smiled. “I will.” He turned around and started to walked out. He stopped at the doorway, and turned his head. “You’re a good sister; don’t let your fears rule you,” then walked out.
Ava tried not to stare at Liz and Zan. It hurt. The look on each other’s face, it was everything Ava had wished for. The love, strength, and devotion were blatant, and ripped at the rapidly enlarging hole in Ava’s heart.
Kyle could see the pain in her eyes. His arms tightened in response. He reminded himself that she wasn’t Tess. His heart argued that any idiot could tell that. Tess would never allow herself to show that kind of emotion so blatantly. If eyes were the windows to the soul, someone had put shades up in Tess’s.
Ava looked away from the scene, and over at Kyle. She had just met him, and could admit that she found him attractive. There wasn’t an instant ‘I want to have your babies’ connection. But he gave her a sense of calm, something that she could barely remember.
Future Liz looked over at her army. She knew that she shouldn’t call them that, but in the end that’s what they were. These were the soldiers that would defend Earth. Zan was right, they were kids. Yet, they were already better then the world’s armies. These ‘kids’, so to speak, had already faced death head on.
She turned her head to Future Max. He stood there, arms crossed, glaring at Zan. She walked over, and placed a hand on his shoulder. He quickly looked over at her, and pulled her into his arms. It was the initiation that he was waiting for; she had taken the first steps.
“What are you thinking?” Future Max murmured in Future Liz’s hair.
“They’re ready. They don’t realize it. We just have to get the crew in Roswell ready.” Future Liz whispered into Future Max’s shoulder.
“What makes them more ready then… the Roswell set?” Future Max stumbled on words ‘Roswell Set’. It felt foreign on his tongue.
“Zan knows how to use the Granolith. Ava, Rath and Lonnie will follow his lead. They know that the best way to stay alive is to listen to me. We’ll have to do a lot more since younger Max doesn’t know anything about the Granolith; let alone what an active seal means.” Future Liz bit her tongue as active seal caused Future Max to stiffen. She didn’t want to remind him that she was dying, but it was a fact of life.
She could remember the pain as the seal activated. The power surged through her nerve endings, burning a path to her brain. The seal itself wasn’t painful, using its power to reinforce her own was.
“I don’t want to talk about that.” Future Max whispered forlorn.
“I understand.” Future Liz started to turn in his arms, as if to break away.
“No, you don’t.” Future Max tightened his grip, his voice an angry whisper. “I don’t like thinking about you dying, because some time between you kneeing me in the groin and walking into their crib, so to speak, I’ve taken a liking to you.”
“I’m not your wife, Max. I look a little bit like her, and you miss her.” Future Liz waved away his declaration. She broke free, and stormed out of the living room.
Future Liz’s display broke into the spell Zan and Liz seemed to be in. “What’s wit da Queenie?”
“Max seems to have upset her.” Liz looked over at Future Max. “What did you do?”
“The only thing I’ve ever done, Liz. Love you.” Future Max stormed out after Future Liz.
“He don’t. He dink he does. Dat’s me.” Zan’s arms tightened around Liz. His face buried in her hair. “We’s always suppose ta be.”
“I don’t believe in…” Liz started to say destiny, as Zan lifted her face to look him in the eye. As their eyes met, Zan leaned down to kiss her.
His tongue demanded entrance, as he slid his fingers through her hair. Their first kiss wasn’t like all the fairy tales speak of. It spoke of dirty promises, lust and a hint of passion... It was a fight for dominance. Rath and Kyle watched with almost a clinical detachment, both needing to know the winner. Ava hid her eyes in Kyle’s shirt, praying for the pain to end. The kiss played across her mind’s eye, images seared into her brain.
“You’s…” Zan started to speak, as Liz pulled him back to her embrace. They were like lions battling in a mating dance of raw sexual tension.
As they broke apart, Liz leaned against Zan’s chest gasping for air. Zan leaned back against the side of the couch, his fingers still entangled in her hair. He gasped for air as well, his chest pushing against Liz’s cheek.
Ava couldn’t handle the noise; the hastily swallowed breathes, soft sighs, and the creaking of the arm of the couch that had been a crutch for the now drained Zan leaned upon. They were like needles in her ears. Pulling away from Kyle, she walked to Lonnie’s room. Bumping into Alex, with a quick, soft apology, she never lifted her head.
What hurt the most wasn’t the emotion in Zan’s eyes, the leaning into each other for support, or even the messy, sex saturated kiss that left her only slightly hot and bothered. It was that she was beginning to like Liz. She never thought she could like the one who’d complete Zan, if nothing else, then for the fact that Ava couldn’t. But Liz was different, she wasn’t that Queenie, who held a pain so deep in her eyes, it was like an open wound on her face. She was strength. Most people when confronted by the power and presence of Zan allowed themselves to feel less. This woman not only didn’t back down, she fought him at every turn. Liz was every inch Zan’s equal, while Ava could barely stare down her own shadow.
Ava flopped down on Lonnie’s bed, as Lonnie pulled out a pair of pant. “I tolds Microchip to let ya knows I was grabbing ya kit.” Lonnie shook her head, as she turned to Ava. “What’s wrong?’
“What’s I worth? I’s not da Queen. Why I here?” Ava looked over at Lonnie, tears etched in her eyes.
“You’s Aves. Fuck dem! Dey’s all babble. We stick-it.” Lonnie grumbled as she threw a shirt into the duffle bag.
“I’s like ‘em. But I’s useless wit his Queen ‘round.” Ava sighed. “What’s worse is I’s like her.”
“She do stand up to ‘Da Man’. I dink he likes it.” Lonnie shook her head. “Aves, don’t worry bout dem. What’s wit da jock you’s hanging off of?”
“No’ing. He’s baggable.” Ava shook off the self pity she had wrapped herself in.
“Den, Bag him.” Lonnie smirked. “Good ta see ya back. No more gloom and doom. Leaves dat to Queenie. It seems ta be her ding.”
Zan could feel the stares on him. They taunted him with knowledge of his self control, or lack there of. He could feel each strand of her hair wrapping it’s self around his fingers; caressing them, and trapping him. Her lips tasted like orange flavored gloss, as her tongue tasted of chocolate and all things decadent. He wanted to lose himself in her. He could feel her move against him, as he flexed his fingers.
A moan tore through Liz’s lips as Zan massaged her head with his fingertips. He tasted like spice, and curry. She rolled her tongue around her mouth again, as if to capture any of his taste that had escaped. She knew she loved Max, but after kissing Zan she knew how much she loved Max. He was her first love, sweet and gentle; while Zan ran through her blood like lightning dance over her skin. With Zan, love would never be docile, and there was no escape. She was his. The power Future Liz had manifested could be felt curling around her middle. It pulled at her, begging for release.
The moment was broken by Rath coughing. “Sorry, I dink I swallowed my tongue.” Rath looked embarrassed and antsy. “Someone gots camera? We can big buck it wit da show dey put on.”
Kyle blushed, embarrassed to be caught staring. “Like America’s Funniest Home Videos?”
“Naw. Porn.” Rath leered at Liz, before backing off quickly at the look in Zan’s eyes; the look that screamed to not stare at his woman. “Just joking, Duke. Da Queen is yours.”
Alex stood just outside of Lonnie’s room, shell shocked. His eyes wide and mouth dropped open in amazement. “I’ll be at the Yukon if anyone needs me.” Alex spoke slowly as he blinked. He walked out, stiff with shock. This wasn’t what he had expected to walk into; Liz and Zan fighting, yes, Liz and Zan making love with their tongues, not even close. Alex pondered on how this would affect their mission, as he made his way to the car, hoping he didn’t get lost along the way.
“I needs ta talk wit my Queen in private.” Zan stood up, his fingers loosing its grip. A hand slide down to take hers. As their fingers intertwined, Zan led Liz to his bedroom. He closed the curtain, with a look at Rath and Kyle to find somewhere else to be.
“I dink we needs ta pack da car. What’s bout ya?” Rath looked away from Zan’s closed room.
“I was thinking the same. Plus, have you ever thought of Buddhism. I mean, you already are reincarnated, so to speak.” Kyle shrugged off the strange feeling of wanting to find Ava instead.
Rath rolled his eyes as he started back out of the sewers. “Jock, we’s need ta get you new liners. Plus, do I’s look like da type to pray to a fat man statue?” Rath and Kyle started to bicker as they made their way to the car.
