The Journey Home
Chapter One
It's May 14, 2003. I am Liz Parker Evans and lately I have been thinking
about the past year. Where to start? I don't know - so much has happened in these few months that we never thought possible....
The van door slammed shut as the six climbed out on to the sunny long street in front of a very tall brick building. Liz walked up and pulled the dark wood glass doors entering the dark building. Her voice echoed and made the walls vibrate as she cried out "Mom? Dad?" Suddenly there was a rumble from upstairs and after a few minutes two smiling figures appeared flying through the blue back door and into the arms of their daughter.
"Oh Lizzie," Jeff cried through a stream of tears, "You’re home!" “We never thought we would ever see you again!” Nancy cried as she wiped her eyes. Liz looked up at them through blurry red eyes and said, "I love you both so much." She gave them a hug before she turned and took the hand of the man that had made it possible for them to return home.
Max squeezed her tiny hand and smiled. "Max! You’re home!" Jeff said, giving him a huge hug. “It's incredible to see you both again.” His eyes sparkled through the huge smile on his face.
"Here, let me take your things. Where are the others?" Nancy asked as she took the torn and ratted bags from their arms. "They are on their way. They are just getting their stuff out of the van," Max replied, smiling to look at the four faces beaming in the desert
sun.
With in a few minutes the whole Crashdown was a joyous gathering as Nancy and Jeff greeted the weary travelers. Soon the phone was ringing off the hook as Nancy told Amy De Luca the good news that Maria was home. In a cheerful tone she invited Amy to come and celebrate the homecoming of their children with them. She then called the Evans’ and Jim Valenti to tell them the joyous news.
"Mom, Dad!" Max and Isabel said as they ran to hug their parents when they arrived. Philip and Diane were all a wreck, hugging and kissing their children and telling them they loved them over and over. "I kept praying I would see you again. I was so worried about you two!" Diane
said though teary eyes. "Oh Mom," Isabel said, "We kept hoping we would find a way to return." She wiped the tears from her eyes and looked at the familiar faces she loved so much.
In a few moments Amy and Jim arrived carrying a huge banner and a cake saying ‘Welcome Home’ in big blue letters. "Kyle!" Jim said as he ran to hug his son. "Dad!" Kyle said as his arms embraced his father. They stood there a long time before Kyle broke the silence by saying, "I hope my room is still the same and that you didn't make an extension or throw away my magazines." Jim laughed and said, "No it's still there, Buddha and all." "Good! I can't wait to sleep in my own bed." Kyle smiled as he started to help Amy hang the banner.
"Mom!" Maria exclaimed as she ran to her mother, smiling. She dragged
Michael along with her. "Maria, Michael! Oh my god! Why, I never!" Amy cried, stepping down from the ladder and giving both of them a hug. "Now you didn't get arrested at all, did you? I hope not, crossing those state lines."
Michael and Maria both laughed and said "No, far from it." "Though there was this one time..." Michael said, smirking. Amy's mouth fell open in shock. "I'm kidding!" Michael said and hugged Amy again. She pushed him a little and said "I hope you are, Michael Guerin, or else!" She smiled and said, "Okay who is ready for a party?"
The music played loudly as the Crashdown was a noisy gathering as everyone shared and exchanged the stories of their cross-country adventures.
Max turned and from afar he could see Liz, who was helping get some plates out for the cake. He stared at her for a while, smiling. Liz turned to the back door and went inside to get some more plates. Max followed her and the door closed with one long swoosh.
Liz turned her deep brown eyes to his, glowing as he enclosed her with a long, passionate kiss. They both hugged each other tight, not wanting to let go. Max broke the kiss and whispered softy into her ear, "Brings back memories." He smiled longingly at her.
"Yes it certainly does," Liz replied as her hand reached up to touch his cheek. "It so nice to finally be home," she sighed as her lips came to up to touch his, looking deep into his golden eyes. In a few seconds the space between their lips was gone as they drove into a passionate kiss.

Chapter One countinued....
The night wandered on and the Crashdown was busy with chatter. The clock read one by the time everyone was getting tired and sleepy. "I think it's time to call it a night,” Jeff Parker said, yawning. "I think you’re right,” Diane Evans replied. "Max, Isabel, come and get your things - you can stay at our house tonight and sleep in your old rooms."
As much as Max would have wanted to stay with his parents he would have preferred to stay at the Crashdown with Liz. But he knew she didn't have the room and didn’t want to bother her parents after they’d had such a long day.
"Ok Mom," Max answered, turning to the pile and gathering up their bags.
Isabel thanked the Parkers for the wonderful party and told them how
grateful she was for their warm welcoming home. Everyone agreed and said their thank-you's as they headed towards the door. Liz helped Max to the car with his bags, wishing he could stay but knowing that he needed sleep after the day they just had.
"So I guess I will see you in the morning, then," Liz said, staring into his eyes. "Yeah I’ll see you then. Sleep well," Max said and leaned down to give her a kiss on the cheek. The car door slammed as Max climbed into the back seat while Isabel fell dead asleep across his lap. The car’s headlights lit up the street and within a few seconds the Evans family was gone.
"I'll call you in the morning," Maria said as she and Michael helped Amy and Jim put the last of the decorations back into the trunk. "Ok, thanks Maria," Liz said. "Anytime." Maria smiled and gave Liz a hug. "Thank your dad again for the great time," Michael said, giving Liz a hug. "I will. Get home safe you guys."
Liz watched her friends go. "Come on you two, let’s go!" Amy exclaimed, opening the car door before sliding in and starting it. "Liz, thanks again,” Amy yelled out the window before speeding off into the night. Liz waved as she watched the car disappear.
"Wow what a night!" a voice from behind her said. "Oh Kyle, I didn't know
you guys were still here," Liz said smiling. "Yeah we are leaving in a few
minutes. I don't know about you but I am beat." “Yeah me too." Liz replied, yawning. In a few minutes Jim was standing on the street beside them as they made their way to the car. "I never thought the day would come when you would return to Roswell. It is great seeing everyone." Jim said, beaming.
"Have a nice night with your parents, Liz. We will see you in the morning."
Jim said as he and Kyle got into the car. "OK, drive safely." Liz said,
waving as they drove off.
The dark wood door opened with a creak and Liz flipped on the light. Her old room was just the way she had left it a few weeks ago. It was like time stood still here. Nothing was changed. Liz placed her bag on the floor and opened her dresser drawer. She quickly changed into her nightgown. As it was a hot night she decided that her white nightgown would be the best choice.
Once changed, she looked around the room and walked over to her desk. She noticed books and papers from school and some science awards she
had won as well as her gold honor cords she wore for graduation.
Her eyes turned to her top shelf where her pictures were displayed. She
picked one up and blew some dust off of it. It was a picture of Liz, Maria,
and Alex. She remembered the day it was taken: she and Maria were working and Alex came in all excited. He had just gotten his first camera and was really eager to use it.
She smiled remembering how Maria complained about how dorky she looked in her uniform, but Liz didn't mind. Alex had copies of the picture made for them and since then it had been her favorite picture of the three of them.
She smiled as tears filled her eyes. God, she missed him so much! Alex was her best friend besides Maria. He was so full of life, passionate about
music and a loyal friend. She always enjoyed her talks with Alex. Liz
thought to herself, "God why did he have to die? He would have loved to
have been here tonight, talking and laughing with all of us - especially
Isabel. Oh how he loved her so."
Liz placed the picture back on the shelf and went to another one. She picked it up and stared at it as her mind wandered to a time she remembered like it was yesterday. It was a picture of herself in a beautiful black dress.
Her hair was all pinned up in an Audrey Hepburn hairdo and next to her was Max in jeans, a gray shirt and leather coat. Maria took it of the two of them the night of the Blind Date Concert, after Alex and his band The Whits had played and Maria sang with them.
"God why did Maria enter me in that stupid KROZ Radio Blind Date Contest anyway?" Liz thought to herself. It was the most embarrassing night of her life, going out on a date with Doug Shellow. More like Shallow! It wasn't until Max had come to save her that it turned from an embarrassing night to the most magical night of her life.
He confessed his love to her and how he truly felt about her. Liz smiled remembering how drunk he was as a result of Kyle. Her heart told her he wasn't drunk when he told her that she was his dream girl and asked "What’s so great about Normal?" and made sparklers out of the parking meters.
Normal was something she certainly never wanted and Max was far from it. And she wouldn't have traded it for the world. Max had showed her things she never thought possible and opened her world to things she could only dream about. She still couldn't believe that they were married.
She smiled as she looked at the picture. Things were so innocent back then, and scary. But through all of the hard times they always found a way. That's why it was one of her favorite pictures of the two of them - because no matter what happened, it was their pure love and innocence that made them strong.
Liz broke out of her trace and blinked her eyes when she heard a tapping at her window. She turned and smiled when she saw who it was. "What are you doing here?" she asked as she opened the window and helped him climb into her room.
"I just had to see you," Max said as he placed a passionate kiss on her lips. "You’re so beautiful," he whispered when they finally broke. Liz smiled and then started to cry. "I can't believe we are home," she said. "Thank you for finding a way back." Liz gave him a hug. Max looked into her eyes and kissed her again.
"So what were you looking at?" Max said, eyeing Liz's desk. "Oh I was
looking at old pictures. Look what I found.” Liz handed the photo to him.
"Oh my god you still have this!" Max said as he sat on Liz's bed taking off
his shoes. "I remember that night like it was yesterday. Wow, what a wild and crazy night that was. I still can't believe Maria entered you into that contest and you went out with that Shallow guy." Liz laughed as she sat on the bed next to him. "I know – god, he was so boring and a little creepy." Liz said.
"What - he wasn't mysterious, dark-haired or exotic enough for you?" Max teased, smiling. "No," Liz said "There is only one man who’s mysterious, dark-haired and exotic enough for me." Liz leaned Max more on to her bed. "Really?" Max grinned. "So, who is this guy?" Liz laughed.
"No seriously, who is this guy?" Max said, liking this game. "Oh my god do I have to tell you?" Liz said, laughing as she placed a kiss on his lips. "Oh so that’s the guy!" Max said as he pulled Liz closer to him. "Yes, that’s him, Max Evans." Liz stopped and looked over at her wall. "I wonder if it is still there?" she said as she got up from the bed.
She reached the wall and began to search it. Finally she found the brick and pulled it until it came away from the wall. She placed the brick on the
floor and looked into the rectangular abyss. She reached in and felt the
hard texture of the cover as her figures brushed against the object. With a look of awe in her eyes she pulled out a black book as Max looked at her in wonder. Liz walked back and sat down next to Max on the bed.
"What’s that?" Max asked, looking into Liz’s deep brown eyes. "Oh this," Liz hesitated for a minute, and then said "This is my journal. You remember - the one I lost but found." Max nodded. "Anyway, I, - I want you to read it." Liz stared at the cover. "Liz, no, these are your personal thoughts. I could never read this." Max took her hands into his. "Max, I want to give this to you. I want you to know everything.”
”When we left I told my Dad to burn it by the pod chamber after my mom and Maria's mom read it, but he didn't. I am grateful he never did because it's my most precious gift. I want you to read it. Consider it a piece of my heart that I am giving to you." Liz smiled. "Liz, thank you." Max said as he took the journal from her. "I'll treasure it forever." He gave her a light kiss.
Their light kiss soon turned passionate as Max lay Liz down onto her bed. It had been too long since they were together like this. The last few weeks had been crazy for them, always running and wondering who was after them next. But not tonight. No, tonight it was about them and they knew they were safe again - forever this time.
"Max," Liz sighed as he started to kiss her neck and the base of her chest
while she ran her fingers through his dark hair, "We can't, at least not
tonight. My parents might wake up and you need to get home before yours start to worry." Liz said breathlessly.
"I know." Max said in between kisses. He didn't want to leave. He wanted to stay in this room with her for eternity. "I should go and get my things." He pulled Liz up from the bed as they kissed passionately. "No, not yet." Liz said as she placed him down onto the bed. "Liz!" Max sighed while she kissed him hard.
She then broke from their kiss and laid her head on his chest, feeling his
heart pounding in her ear. It was the most beautiful sound and she loved
listening to it while his chest rose and fell with each breath. "Don't
leave. Stay, please stay." She softy cried.
"I wish I could but the sun will be up in a few hours and if I am not home
before sunrise my parents will worry." Max kissed her head. Liz turned and looked into his deep golden eyes. "Ok, you better go but will you come again tomorrow night? I miss sleeping with you." "Don't worry I will come. I'll be here." Max rose from the bed and put his shoes on. He placed a hand on Liz's journal. "Don't worry; I'll guard it with my life." He whispered softly into her ear, before walking to the window.
Liz rose and followed him out onto the balcony. The sky was an explosion of diamonds as stars twinkled in the sky. Max walked over to the fire escape and started down but stopped midway, awestruck at what he saw. Liz looked like an angel among the stars in her white nightgown. She was his Venus, his Queen.
"Sweet Dreams," Max said while Liz bent down to give him a goodnight kiss. They parted and Liz watched Max while he climbed down to the pavement below, got into his new jeep and drove off into the night.
Liz looked up at the stars and smiled. She entered her bedroom, snuggled into her old bed and closed her eyes.
Max arrived home and quickly parked the jeep in the driveway. He entered through the back door and quietly made his way upstairs to his old room. He entered the dark bedroom and placed Liz's journal into his top dresser drawer. He got changed and climbed into bed. Within minutes he was fast asleep.
In the room across the hall, moonlight shining through the window made the room glow. Isabel slept soundly but woke in a sudden shock. Opening her eyes wide, she cried out "Alex!"
Chapter Two
Max sank deeper and deeper into his dreams while his right arm reached out towards the window in the moonlight, hoping he could hold Liz's hand in his.
He always dreamed of Liz whether she was miles away or right next to him. It didn't matter as long as they were together. Max sighed as he snuggled into his pillow, thinking it was Liz he was curled up to as she softly called out his name. "Max, Max...Max!"
Max woke up, startled, when he realized it was the voice of his sister
Isabel who was calling his name. Max got up and rubbed his tired eyes.
"Isabel, what is it?" His sister sat down on the bed.
"It's Alex! Max, he's alive - Alex is alive!" Isabel said with a huge smile across her face. Her eyes glowed with excitement. "Are you sure, Iz? I mean, you have had dreams about Alex before. What makes this one different from the others?" Max said with a look of confusion on his face.
He knew Isabel would dream of Alex sometimes, especially in the days after his death. She would wake up in the middle of the night screaming his name.
"He was really there. I could talk to him, hear him and touch him." Isabel had tears in her eyes as she took her brother’s hand. "But just because you might have seen him doesn’t prove he is alive." Max said with a look of concern as he looked deep into his sister’s eyes.
"No, I felt him. He is out there, somewhere, alive. He told me he would find a way back and that I have to find him." Isabel looked out the window at the stars.
"Do you remember the night we went camping in the woods on the annual
Roswell Father’s Camping Weekend?" Max nodded. "Well, Alex and I went stargazing. It was like a night just like tonight and we saw the Cygnus constellation." "So?" Max said, trying to see his sister’s point.
"Well look," Isabel said, pulling Max out of his bed and showing him the stars outside. "There it is." Isabel pointed. "The Cygnus constellation is in the sky tonight and I saw it in my dream. Don't you see, Max? It’s a sign. Alex is sending me a sign saying he is alive."
Max turned to look at his sister as her outstretched hand fell to her side.
"You don't believe me, do you? You think I am crazy." Isabel’s eyes dropped to the floor.
"No. Far from it, Isabel. Look, if what you are saying is true, then this is incredible." He took her hand and walked back to his bed. "So what do we do now, Max?" Isabel asked, concerned. "Well let’s see what happens tomorrow night and see if you get another vision." Max said.
"Alex! Oh my god! My blood brother, alive!" Max said in wonder,
remembering all the good times they had shared together. Alex was one of Max's close friends. He was always walking around with the biggest smile on his face and always cracking jokes.
Max laughed to himself remembering the time he decided to do a police officer striptease act for his sister’s surprise party. Yeah, that good old Alex was quite a character. Alex was also one of the most loyal friends Max ever had. Through thick and thin he stood by him, even if it meant dying.
Alex and Max's friendship got off to a rocky start in the beginning when
Alex thought that Max was a druggie. Isabel had to take Alex's blood and
switch it with Max's in order to hide his alien DNA when he and Liz got into
that horrible car accident one day during school. During that time Alex
didn't know the secret.
It made it hard for Max to be friends with Alex until Liz finally told him the night they were in jail. The two sixteen-year-olds had been falsely accused of possessing alcohol at the Old Soap Factory rave during the bizarre heat wave in Roswell that December.
Isabel smiled and tears filled her eyes as she gave her brother a hug.
They stayed like that until Max broke away and asked, "What about Jesse?" Isabel looked at her brother with troubled eyes.
"I haven't, I haven't thought that far ahead." Max kissed her on the forehead. "Don't worry, we will find a way." Max assured, squeezing her hand. "Yeah, we will figure something out. I just can't believe Alex is alive.”
"Wow, Max, you look so tired. Where were you tonight, anyway?" Isabel said, concerned. "I was on top of Venus." Max smiled as he remembered how radiant Liz looked in her white nightgown. Isabel jumped off the bed with her hands waving in the air. "Oh my god Max, tell me you didn't! You know I really didn't need a mental picture of you and Liz..." Max laughed, teasing his sister.
"Relax, Iz, nothing happened, I swear." "I know, I'm just teasing
you!" Isabel said, laughing. "I think it's great you have someone in your
life. I'm happy for you. Liz is so sweet and so lucky to have you, my
brother, as her husband." She stood there dazed as her thoughts started to wander, wishing she could be as lucky as her brother.
"Don't worry, we will find him." Max assured Isabel, reading her thoughts
and giving her a hug. "I know. Good night, Max. I will see you in the
morning." Isabel got up off the bed and made her way to the door. She
turned and regarded her brother lying there in his old bed. "It's so nice to
be home." Isabel said. "Good night, Isabel, I will see you in the morning.
Sleep well." Max said before his sister closed the door behind her.
Max climbed under his covers. He could hear her footsteps in the hallway
before Isabel’s bedroom door creaked open and closed. Soon the house was quiet while the stars above shined in the midnight sky.
