Maybe we're both just holding on to something that'll never be. Max, maybe we should just let go. I have been in so much pain. This whole year, and it's like I'm suffocating.
Liz didn’t know why she was saying what she was saying. None of it was true. She wanted Max more than anything else in this world. She wanted to go back to how things were. She wanted him to hold her, and kiss her senseless. She just wanted him to kiss her forehead and tell her everything would be ok; that they would face everything together.
But her mind was telling her heart an entirely different story. Despite all that she was saying to Max at that moment, despite all the pain and suffering she felt, she still wanted to scream out him and tell him that she was being irrational. But her mind wouldn’t let her.
All she could think about was all the pain she felt, and that she didn’t know what else to do but to say what she was saying, so she just let her mind speak for her, and let her heart sit on the backburner.
She watched as she broke Max’s heart into pieces and she couldn’t bear it. She wanted to reach out and cup his cheek, and stand on her tiptoes and give him the sweetest passionate kiss right there in the middle of the dance floor. She wanted everyone to witness her love for Max Evans, and let it be known that no matter what they went through, she still wanted him. But instead she acted as a coward and hid her feelings, and told Max to let go.
Trying to hold back her tears, Liz stayed silent as a big knot formed in her throat. She finished shattering both their hearts, and now she had nothing left to say. She looked up into his eyes one last time and saw him fighting as well. She prayed so hard that he would yell at her, and tell her to fight for him, but he just told her to go to Maria. Liz nodded her head and just as she turned she let of soft sob.
What had she just done?
Max watched Liz turn away from him and he wanted nothing more to grab her arm and push her towards him, wrap his arms around her and kiss her in front of everyone. This was the second time Liz Parker had broken his heart, second time she had rejected him, and he still loved her. He still loved her with everything he had, and he wasn’t ready to let go. But he had to let go, it was what she wanted. Watching Liz walk away and towards Maria, watching as she turned her head one last time to face him, he wasn’t so sure if that was what she really wanted, but it wasn’t up to him. If she wanted him to let go, he would, he’d do anything for her, he always would.
Max sighed and walked out towards the exit, Liz’s gaze following him.
Max sat down on the lounge chairs in the middle of the high school hallways and he could feel his heart ripping into two. He wanted Liz Parker more than anything, and he fought for her too many times, but now, he was tired of trying. If Liz wanted to let go, he would let her. He had fought too hard and just ended up losing the battle and he couldn’t take it anymore. He was just too tired.
Tess came out of the Janitor’s closet with Kyle and found Max sitting there looking so distraught. She told Kyle to go on without her and she walked over next to Max.
As she sat down, Max confided in her, he confided that he thought that it was really over. But was that what he was really feeling? Was he really confident that it was all over, or was he just giving up, which just ended it in being over? If he fought harder would they have a chance? For all his life he never wanted anything more than Liz Parker, so why should things change now?
Maybe we're both just holding on to something that'll never be.
Her words stung so bad, that he wasn’t sure he could do it anymore. Would it be worth it if he fought for her? It wasn’t before. He couldn’t do it anymore, he loved her so much but she didn’t want him.
Before he knew it he was kissing Tess. He didn’t know what had possessed him. He was so hurt, and she was there for him. It was so wrong, the kiss was so wrong, they didn’t belong together, it was Liz. It would always be Liz. Max pulled away from her and looked into her eyes. They weren’t Liz’s and for the first time, Max finally understood.
He didn’t want to kiss anybody else but Liz Parker, and he was going to make sure that she would be the only person he was kissing. No matter how hard she fought him. Liz Parker was his soul mate, and he knew she knew it.
Max looked up and saw Liz standing there on the verge of tears. It was at that moment that he knew. He knew that she still loved him.
Liz stood there and watched Max and Tess kiss and her heart pained with agony. It hurt so much. She was such a coward, she told him to let go, and he did, and now she had to still suffer. She should have told him the truth; she should have followed her heart. She couldn’t contradict herself anymore, it was truly over, so she did the only thing she could do and she ran.
Just as Liz ran out the high school doors Max stood up ready to follow her. He looked down at Tess and saw the pain etched on her face.
“Go.” Tess said.
“Tess…” Max wasn’t sure what he was going to say, all he knew was that if he didn’t follow Liz at that moment, he would truly loose her.
“Max, go.” Max smiled at her and ran towards Liz.
They were soaking wet but neither one of them cared. They only cared about being in the other’s presence. Max reached out and cupped her cheek. Gave her a kiss on the forehead.
“No, that was the day my life began. Liz, when I was in that room, and they did what they did to me. You're what kept me alive. The thought of you. The way your eyes look into mine. Your smile. The touch of your skin...” He caressed her cheek passionately.
“Your lips…” His thumb traced the outline of her lips as she gave out a soft nervous laugh.
“Knowing you has made me human. Whether I die tomorrow or fifty years from now, my destiny is the same: it's you. I want to be with you, Liz. I love you.”
“I love you.” She said back. At that moment, it didn’t matter that they were hiding from the terrors brought upon them, they didn’t care that they were stuck in a broken down van soaked. At that moment, the only things that ran through their minds as they kissed with such passion and love, all they could think about was that they were in love, and they were loved back, and nothing could ever feel as great as that.
Max caught up to Liz and just as he grabbed her arm it started to pour rain on them.
“Max, what are you doing here? You should be with Tess Max.” Liz said through her broken heart. Despite how much it hurt her to say it, she was the one to tell him to let her go, she couldn’t back down now.
“No Liz. I’m right where I belong.” Liz looked up at him.
“Max…”
“Stop it Liz. Please stop fighting us. Liz, I know you love me. I know it, and I know that you think that it’s not meant to be but it is Liz, it is meant to be. You’re all I’ve ever known Liz. You’re all I’ve ever wanted, and I don’t care what you say, because I fucking love you Liz Parker. I love you so much that it hurts, but I don’t care because if I can’t have you, than I’d want to feel that pain. I never want to forget all that we’ve faced, we’ve been through so much, and I just, I just want it to be us again. I know things have changed, but one thing that hasn’t change is my love for you. I love you Liz, please stop fighting this, please. I can’t bear it anymore, I want to hold you Liz. I want to be there with you so that I don’t have to go through another night alone, I want to reach out and stroke your hair, I want to walk hand in hand with you, and I just want to scream out at the world and tell everyone in it that I love you.”
Liz laughed through her tears. She cried so hard, but at that moment, she didn’t care. To hell with future Max, this is where she belonged.
“Max, I love you, I love you I do. But…” She couldn’t believe that after all she said, after all the pretending, he was still able to read her like the back of his hand.
“No buts Liz. Forget all the other crap, none of it matters, all that matters right now is this moment, right now, you and me. That’s it. Don’t make it more complicated than it already is Liz. Together, we can fight the pain, together we can make it all go away, not separately.” Liz smiled and she didn’t care anymore, she didn’t care about what her mind was screaming out at her, she lunged into his arms and took his lips into hers.
“I want to show you something.” Max whispered as they both stood soaking wet. Liz shook her head.
“Ok.” Max led them to the observatory and once they reached it they ran inside.
“Tess showed me this a couple of weeks ago.” Max said as he gestured her to look through the gigantic telescope.
“It’s beautiful.” Liz said.
“None of it makes sense to me, I know that that’s supposed to be my home, but none of it feels like home to me. You make me feel at home Liz, you’re the only destiny I’ve ever known.” Liz looked up into his eyes her eyes filled with tears.
“I love you so much Max, I’m so sorry about leaving you that day, I was so confused and so I ran, you don’t know how much it killed me to say what I said to you earlier I was screaming out to myself to just shut up and kiss you but I didn’t, I didn’t mean anything I said earlier…” Max cut her off with a kiss. He quickly deepened the kiss and his tongue rang alone the trace of her lips and she quickly granted him access.
Their tongues dueled in a slow sweet passionate pace and Max pulled Liz closer against him, his obvious arousal poking at her.
She moaned at the contact which only made him harder. They pulled apart gasping for air.
“Make love to me Max.” Liz whispered. Max looked up at her and wanted to see if she was sure.
“Don’t ask me if I’m sure, trust me, I am.” She said before grabbing his shirt to pull him closer to her.

Max slowly inched his self inside of Liz, just as he reached her barrier Max looked up at her in shock.
“I’ve only ever wanted to be with one person Max, and that’s you. I could never betray you,” She whispered. Max felt a tear running down his cheek, his worse nightmare, the thing that haunted him daily, was just that, only a nightmare, it wasn’t true.

Max started off in a slow pace but Liz’s pants led him to quicken his pace and soon they were screaming out each other’s name in ecstasy.
