A Tale of Two Zans :
If there’s one thing you should know about Sarah, it’s that she’s a small town kinda girl with a big personality. As soon as she was able to do it, she boldly moved to New York to check out the artistic scene. Ohio couldn’t contain such a free and talented spirit as her, and as much as she hated living in a tuna can of an apartment, she loved the city. There was always a new person to meet and something new to experience and she just ate it up. Grabbing her bag on the coffee table she locked the door behind her and headed off to yet another audition.
Her auditions hadn’t been working out for her lately, and anyone else in her shoes would have given up by now. Not Sarah. She knew that half of the acting game was rejection and she kept her hopes up because hey, what if Madonna had quit after her first rejection? The only thing that was taking a toll on her was her daily pangs of homesickness. She missed her family a lot, and her sister the most. Taylor wasn’t just her sister, she was like her best friend and her sanity in this crazy world.
As she sat down on the train and opened up her book to read, the lights flickered, impairing her ability to read. She was used to N.Y.C. trains and they’re usual flickering but she was not in the mood for it today. Reading her book was supposed to make her calm and take the nervousness away from her audition, but it looks like that wasn’t going to happen.
Closing her book, she embarked on her next favorite guilty pleasure, people watching. It was always interesting to see different people and how they interact with each other in a closed space. Back home, people were neighborly and would smile and say hello… here, you didn’t even make eye contact with the person who may be half sitting on your lap due to the congestion. The sliding doors from the next car opened and she was instantly drawn to them, as was half the car. Hey, any movement is interesting when you have nothing to do but wait for your stop.
If she wasn’t already sitting down… pinned down was more like it, she would’ve had to take a seat when she saw him enter the car. He was tall, slender but muscular, and his toned arms looked amazing. His hair was spiked and his clothes was alternatively mismatched but they brought of a hint of green in his eyes. It was almost as if he walked in slow motion, and if this were a movie, a really great loud song would be playing around him. Someone like him deserved his own theme song. She tore her eyes away from him for a millisecond to see if anyone had come in behind him, but to her delight, he was alone.
It was almost fate that he sat across from her. She wasn’t normally this entranced by anyone let alone a stranger, but he just had a certain something about him that she couldn’t look away from him. Noticing, as any other person would when someone was looking that intently at them, he looked up and saw her.
Although she was usually pretty outgoing, shyness took over her and immediately she looked away. Knowing that he saw her and that the damage was done, her cheeks turned a slighter shade of pink with embarrassment. He looked at her clearly interested with a small smile pursed on his lips. She’s cute, he though to himself. He decided to have a little fun and stared at her the way she had been staring at him.
After looking away for a few seconds it was like a moth to a flame that she just had to look back. She couldn’t help it. She slowly turned her head back and looked up at him. His piercing brown eyes looking back at hers nearly made her jump. Pull yourself together damn it, she yelled inwardly to herself. Gaining her composure, she smiled at him.
At that moment the train had stopped at the next location and to her dismay it was the one she was supposed to get off. She looked at him once more, silently wishing she could talk to him, get to know him, get to anything with him… but she pulled herself away and got up quickly exiting through the shiny silver doors.
She didn’t look back for fear that she’d seem like a desperate crazy person but kept walking abruptly forward. A tap at her shoulder startled her and she turned around quickly. When she saw his face, she nearly gasped in shock. He smiled.
“ You uh… you left this.” He said holding out her book. She took it, brushing her hand over his slightly.
“Thanks… I’m sorry you had to miss your stop to bring this back for me…”
He shook his head. “Nah it’s cool , don’t worry about it.”
“Well thanks again…” she said hoping for some kind of sign.
“No problem… maybe I’ll see ya around some time…” he said with one last look, and then he was gone.
“Maybe you will!” She called after him over the he crowd of people now walking in between them. He turned around and nodded in her direction and then continued walking.
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
“Next!” the overly unenthusiastic man called out among the group of people waiting for their auditions.
She walked over nervously, a million different things running through her head. The audition ahead, her missing her family, missing taylor, and the really hot guy she just brushed paths with.
“Name?” He asked dryly.
“Sarah Patrick.”
“Resume?”
She reached into her bag and pulled it out of her folder neatly.
“Ok, dark hair, 5’4”…Down the hall, room 205, ask for Kate.” He said taking her resume and calling out for the next person.
Room 205 was packed with girls. At this point she didn’t even remember what she was auditioning for, but what she did know was that with that many people there, her chances were extremely slim. After what seemed like an eternity her name was called and she was given some lines to read. The title of the script was called “What Really happened?” She wasn’t really sure what the movie was about, all she knew was that her scene had given her the part of a lawyer. She did what she had to do, let her irresistible charm shine through and left the studio room happy that she did her best.
About an hour later she found her self throwing her keys onto the counter and pressing the button on her answering machine. One creditor, one wrong number and one very lonely message from Taylor. She picked up her phone and dialed her sister, taking a seat on her couch and flipping on the T.V.
“Hello?”
“Tay!”
“Aw Say I missed you so much today. I had one of those unbelievably bad days that just get worse even when you think it’s not possible… sorry I’m babbling. How are things over there? Tell me something to cheer me up, I really need it.”
“You sure you don’t wanna talk about your day?”
“No, never.” She responded with a laugh “Make me jealous, how was yours in the Big Apple?”
“It was pretty good, I had an audition today, I know I did a good job but if I don’t get it I won’t be surprised, there was a TON of people there. Ooohhh and I saw a REALLY hot guy. Oh my god you would’ve died.”
“Details please!”
“Well he was a complete package, tall with these… these muscles… and the hair… total bad ass…”
“Sounds like your type. You know me, I personally appreciate the more good guy types, but I usually agree with you so I bet he was gorgeous. Did you interact?!”
“Sorta…”
“What the hell does that mean?!”
“Well we kinda…” Midsentence she was interrupted by her call waiting.
“Hold on Tay, I got another call….Hello?” She said into the receiver.
“Yes… is this Sarah Patrick?”
“This is she.”
“Hi Sarah, this is Kate from KBL studios, we met earlier today.”
Sarah felt a lump rise in her throat.
“Yes, Yes of course.”
“Well I just wanted to call you personally to tell you that we’d like to offer you the lead part of Caitlyn Johnson in our movie!”
She nearly thought she would drop the phone.
“You’re not joking are you?!” Sarah asked excitedly into the phone.
Kate laughed.
“No I wouldn’t do that to you. I will call you back with the minor details but I must tell you that our filming will be taking place in Roswell new Mexico in a few weeks. I hope that this isn’t a problem?”
She was stunned.
“No, absolutely not!”
“Your expenses will be paid for and you will be permitted guest visits free of charge during your stay with us. I’ll let you go now but I will be in touch.”
“Thank you, thank you so much!”
“You’re quite welcome, and congratulations, you were the best we had seen and after you left we cut auditioning girls for that part.”
“Wow, thanks again so much.”
“Bye for now.”
“Bye.” She said and then immediately pressing the send button to return to taylor.
“Geez, took you long enough!! We were in the middle of some serious gossip here!!!..”
“Tay I got the part!”
“You did?!”
“I did!”
“Oh my god I’m so excited for you!”
“I’m excited for you too!”
“Why for me you doof?” Taylor asked laughingly.
“Because they’re filming in NEW MEXICO! And I’m allowed visitors and that means you!!!!!”
“Aaahhh that’s awesome!”
“Ok listen, try not to tell the parentals because I wanna tell them! I’m gonna go get changed and go celebrate!”
“By yourself?!” Tay asked sadly.
She had to admit it was sad not having a friend to just call up to go out with. She had made casual friends but she hadn’t been in N.Y. very long and most of her time was spent at home preparing for auditions and then going out to do them. She walked over to pick up her address list and dropped her book that she had been reading on the train onto the floor. The book opened up to the very last page. On it was a note: “Hey, I know ya felt the same connection I did when I met ya today, now all I can do is hope that I was right and that you’re a fast reader so you reach this page soon. Here’s my cell #, use it. Zan.”
“Uh, you know what maybe not… I’ll talk to you later…” Sarah said quickly hanging up the phone.
“What? Wait…” Taylor said into the dial tone. Confusedly she hung up the phone.
Now Sarah hadn’t meant to be rude to her sister but when it came to this guy, she couldn’t think straight. She had to call him at that very second in fear that if she didn’t she’d never have the nerve again. She slowly dialed the numbers.
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
Zan had walked back into his “home” reluctantly. It was just how he’d left it, in one word, mess. Lonni, Ava and Rath were arguing about the usual nonsense and Zan just couldn’t take them anymore. While they were the closest thing he had to friends or family, he always had a gut feeling that neither Rath nor Lonnie could be completely trusted. Ava had been at his side but even she had gotten on his last nerve lately. He knew he could trust her always… but at this time in his life he didn’t even want to.
“Sup Zan?” Rath said turning away his focus from the other two. “You should’ve taken me with you today bro, these two are getting on my last fuckin nerve.”
Ava and Lonnie looked at each other and then back at him.
“Oh US two?!” They said at the same time.
“You’re the one who’s had a freakin bad attitude all day today!” Lonnie shouted.
“And you’re also the one who started arguing with US TWO in the first place!” Ava yelled sarcastically mimicking his words.
“Would you all just shut the hell up for once!” Zan yelled causing them to instinctively back down. He raised his hand and lowered the sound of the radio blasting around them. His cell phone was deafening in the silence.
“Hello?” He asked into the phone.
Hi voice made her squeal on the inside but on the outside she was calm.
“Hey… Zan? I just got your message.”
He smiled to himself and seeing Ava watching him, he turned right around and walked out of the sewer like palace they called home.
“Hey you, I’m surprised ya called me back.”
“I’m surprised you left me that note… “
He laughed. “Yeah it was very old school of me.”
She laughed. She loved his accent, and she loved that the rough exterior of him held a nice funny guy underneath.
“Well I don’t know much about you, but I was wondering if you’d like to go out tonight and have some fun? I have some celebrating to do and I’d much rather be with you than by myself.” As soon as she said the words she couldn’t believe how confident she came across.
“I’m game, ya know there’s a new club that just opened up on Bowery Street, it’s called uh… what’s the name… oh yeah …Promiscuous…”
“Sounds kinda slutty.” She said with a laugh.
“Well I didn’t name it!” He said sarcastically “But I would like to check it out wit chu.”
Again, that voice.
“It’s a date then, wanna meet there at 11?”
“I’ll be there… hey wait, you never told me your name.”
“It’s Sarah, most people call me Say.”
“I’ll see you at 11 Sarah… I aint most people.”
She smiled into the phone and hung up excitedly.
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
While she always was secretly jealous of her sisters blonde hair, super long legs and unfairly skinny physique, she was not looking too shabby standing outside Promiscuous, waiting for Zan. She wore heals that she knew she’d regret later, but hey it made her just tall enough so that maybe she could look into those big brown eyes. Her hair was pulled back so as to avoid a frizzy mess inside the hot club, and if her shirt could talk it would say “look at me look at me! I aint no slut, but I’m definitely hot!”
“Well look at chu.” He said walking up from behind her.
He looked incredibly sexy. The alternative grungy, classic urban clothes he was wearing looked great on him.
“You look awesome.” She responded.
He motioned for them to enter the club. After the usual I.D. check and stamping of the hands they went inside and situated themselves in a corner of the main room. The place looked enormous with green strobe lights and great music.
“So what are we celebrating anyway?” He asked over the loud music bopping his head with the music.
“I had an audition for this part in a movie and I got it today!”
“That’s awesome… I think that means that we should be dancing.” He said grabbing her hand and moving closer to the dance floor. It didn’t take long for them to get a rhythm going, and he was a great dancer. The suave sophistication he had surrounding him made him a sight to see, never losing his cool. After dancing for a moment with her he held her close swaying their hips together dangerously close. It was as if with each song their bodies were instinctively melting with each others, it was the perfect feeling.
“So this audition…” He began in her ear so that she could hear him. “Does that mean you’ll be too busy to hang out with me again?” He asked.
Suddenly it hit her that she would be leaving in a few weeks for New Mexico.
“Actually, I’m going to be on location… are you someone that would visit someone like me halfway across the country?”
“Hmmm I could be that someone… money is kinda tight though.”
“Oh well that’s the best part… it’s on them.”
“Then I am definitely that guy… it’s weird, I feel so comfortable wit chu.”
“I feel the same.”
It was the perfect moment for a kiss. The room was seemingly spinning around them and she could feel his hot breath on her cheek.
“You wanna get outta here?” He asked disrupting her day dream. She desperately wanted him to kiss her but she nodded yes instead. They left together, both sharing the amazing feeling you get when you like someone, and you know they like you as well. He had expertly hailed them a cab to her place.
Looking out the window she saw the all too familiar blocks leading to her house.
“I don’t want this night to end.” She said poutty with a laugh.
“It doesn’t have to… I’m wide awake.” He offered widening his eyes for emphasis. She smiled at his rare sillyness.
The cab stopped in front of her apartment.
“You want to come in with me? It’s not much but we can watch a movie or something?” She asked innocently and nonchalant, secretly and intently hoping that he would say yes.
“Or something?…” He asked with an eyebrow raised. “I’m just teasing you, sure I’ll come up.” He handed the money to the driver, and followed a now blushing Sarah to her apartment.
“I’m sorry If I embarrassed you.” He said walking over to her after closing the door.
Oh god, my face is so warm, I know I’m turning beet red, she though, silently willing herself to stop changing colors like a chameleon.
“No, no… I’m not… no…” He silenced her by putting his pointer finger to her lips.
“Your cute when you babble.” He said lowering his finger. She smiled.
“You wanna see whats on T.V…. or we could just…”
With that he took two steps closer and crushed his soft lips onto hers.
