Title: The Mutt A short story in one posting
Author: Greywolf
Couple: M/L
Rating: Mature due to subject matter, violence
Disclaimer: I don't own Roswell or any of the characters.

Summary: Science is science, political dogma is political dogma, and never the two should meet

The two year old girl was sitting crosslegged on the floor of the stainless steel cage on the stainless steel table in the animal holding area of the laboratory.

Dr. Bowman looked at the child with disgust and fear. Disgust not of how she appeared, for she was in fact a rather attractive child, with the raven hair of her mother and the big brown eyes of her father.

It was disgust for what she represented. A kaleidoscope of words went through Bowman's head as he looked at the young child; crossbreed, half-blood, half-breed, half-caste, miscegenation, mongrel, mutt........he knew she meant the debasement of the human species. She was incontrovertible evidence that indeed the three Roswell teenagers that the Special Unit had pursued for so long until they were made to stop would not die off in one generation.

He'd told the fools who supervised them, who controlled their manpower and budgets, that this was a holy quest, vital to the purity of the species, but they had laughed at him, cutting his budget, cutting his manpower time and time again.

"Three kids out of 300 million people," they had said, "too unimportant to even bother with once it was established that they were really orphans, not the vanguard of any invasion, just three alien kids trying to pretend they were human beings."

"And even if they could interbreed," they had told him, "So what?" Like a hundred small Indian tribes that had once existed, they would just be absorbed into the gene pool.

What nonsense. How could the fools not understand the defilement of the human species by allowing such interbreeding.

Fortunately, thought Bowman, not everyone thought that way. There were a few that, like him, saw reality clearly. They had continued a small amount of surreptitious funding, the funding that had allowed this laboratory, the funding that had allowed them to have the manpower that let them capture this....miscreant, it's sire, and it's mother.

The thought of the child's mother inflamed Bowman. She'd not even resisted being defiled, in fact, had claimed she loved the beast that she'd given herself to to produce this, this........abomination. She deserved the worst punishment, and she would have it. Even now the technicians next door were getting ready to vivisect her, to take her apart and determine if bearing this revolting and debased fusion of alien filth with her genes had changed her, had left any residue in her own human flesh of the vileness of the alien DNA.

He would enjoy hearing her screams, she had forfeited any right to humane treatment when she had offered up her own humanity for the alien to despoil. No anaesthesia, no mercy, and when she was dead her vile body would be incinerated, purified by fire to an ash that would bear no evidence of the desecration of her flesh by the alien.

The sire was being kept drugged in the white room. His life was now theirs, and it would be one of perpetual testing, to determine every weakness, to determine every option for eliminating the evil spawn forever from the entire Earth. As long as he drew breath, they would use him to get the information to forge weapons against his own kind. That was his future.

But it was the young child that Bowman feared. It looked to all the world like a human child, and that was the problem.

It must be destroyed quickly before all the idiots in the world called it human, before they tried to give it rights. For it was, if you didn't understand the obscenity of it, "cute." And that was all the public cared about sometimes. If harp seal pups had been ugly, they'd be extinct by now, Bowman realized.

But "cute" was not something the public would let you beat to death with a club, however much that might be the right thing to do. If the "cute" half-breed child ever became common knowledge, any hope they might have of eradicating the alien, of preserving the purity of the human race would be gone.

Fortunately, thought Bowman, the child was small, and the laboratory incinerators would handle the body easily. He ordered the technician and the guard to take her, to do it quickly before the politicians could question it.

Amy was frightened. Mommy had told her that she should hide, that she should act like all the other children, that she should hide, but the bad men had found her anyway. They had taken her out of the daycare center. They had hurted Mrs. Rutledge. They hitted her in the face to get Amy away from her. They were bad, very bad.

She knew they had Mommy and Daddy too. Mommy was in the next room, and she was getting frightened. Daddy was in the room after that. He was very tired, and the bad men were poking him with needles, and putting him in a cold bathtub until he coughed. They were bad men.

And the man looking at her, he was a bad man too. She could tell by his eyes, but she could also see it in his thoughts.

Amy looked at Mommy's thoughts. She knew she wasn't supposed to do that, but she was afraid. Mommy had told her not to look at her thoughts when she'd asked Mommy what she and Daddy had been doing that night. Mommy had explained it to her, sort of, but she really didn't understand. But she wasn't supposed to look at their thoughts anymore, although sometimes she did.

They weren't very good at making babies, Amy had decided, but they seemed to try hard. She smiled as she looked in her Mommy's tummy. Mommy and Daddy didn't know about her baby brother yet. He would be such a surprise.

The door to the cage opened and as the first man touched her she went into his mind to see what he intended. It was as Amy feared. He was a bad man too. Mommy and Daddy had told her she shouldn't use her powers, that she should not let anyone know, not ever. And Amy would have kept the secret because Mommy and Daddy had told her to.

But Mommy and Daddy didn't know about her brother, they didn't know what the bad men were going to do with Mommy and her brother. And she loved her baby brother so much.

Bowman watched the technician die as his heart stopped beating abruptly. As he called to the guard to kill the child the white light flew out and the guard too died. The two year old looked at him with big brown eyes that seemed to be filled with infinite sadness and a smalll voice said, "Bad man. Bad man gets a time-out." Those were the last words Bowman ever heard.

As the surgical technician worked to tie down Liz Evans, to bind her so tightly that she couldn't move and complicate the dissection, to gag her so well that her screams wouldn't cause a headache to the investigating pathologist, he did not at first notice the golden glow that dissolved a 4 foot hole in the wall next to him. He turned in surprise though when he heard the small voice suddenly beside him say, "Bad man. You gets time-out too."

Heterosis is increased strength of different characteristics in hybrids; the possibility to obtain a "better" individual by combining the virtues of its parents.

Genetic basis of heterosis. Deleterious recessive genes avoidance hypothesis. Scenario A. Less genes are under expressed in the homozygous individual. As well, gene expression in the offspring is equal to the expression of the best parent. Over dominance hypothesis. Scenario B. Over expression of certain genes in the homozygous. Legend 0 = low or no expression of gene A 1 = normal expression of gene A 2 = over expression of gene A
There are two leading hypothesis explaining the genetic basis behind the fitness advantage of heterosis.
The overdominance hypothesis implies that the combination of divergent alleles at a particular locus will result in a higher fitness in the heterozygote than in the homozygote. Take the example of parasite resistance controlled by gene A, with two alleles A and a, both expressing functional antigens. The heterozygous individual will then be able to express a broader array of antigens (from alleles A and a) and thus resist a broader array of parasites. The homozygous individual, on the other hand, will only express one allele of gene A (either A or a) and therefore will not resist as many parasites as the heterozygous.
The second hypothesis involves avoidance of deleterious recessive genes (also called the general dominance hypothesis), such that heterozygous individuals will express less deleterious recessive alleles than its homozygous counterpart.
The two hypotheses will have different consequences on the gene expression profile of the individuals. If over-dominance is the main cause for the fitness advantages of heterosis, then there should be an over-expression of certain genes in the heterozygous offspring compared to the homozygous parents. On the other hand, if avoidance of deleterious recessive genes is the cause, then there should be fewer genes that are under-expressed in the heterozygous offspring compared to the parents. Furthermore, for any given gene, the expression should be comparable to the one observed in the best of the two parents.
