Isabel Evans had joined West Roswell High in her sophomore year along with her brother Max when their father had shifted his law practice from Albuquerque to Roswell. Although not happy with the move at first Isabel had soon made inroads in to the high society of high school within the first six months of her being a student of WRH. She wasn’t vain or haughty but she did like looking good and having people notice her.

To say the guys sat and took note of her the first day she walked in to the school hallway would be an understatement. Max, who had been at her side had noticed them immediately and had followed her to her homeroom.

“I’ll see you at lunch Isabel.” he said rather loudly so that all the guys who were within hearing distance knew that there was no use in asking her to sit with them
Isabel rolled her eyes but managed not to make a sarcastic reply, “See you Max.”

A seat was empty in the second last row near the window so she headed for that and sat down.
“So is he your boyfriend or bodyguard?” asked a voice close to her ear
Turning around she saw the guy behind her leaning forward, “Neither.”
“I’m Kyle, by the way.”
He offered her his hand and she shook it briefly before turning around in her seat to look in the front as the teacher came in to the room.

“Miss Evans, glad to have you with us. Miss Parker will you give her whatever notes she needs in order to catch up?”
“Yes Mr. Topolsky.” Isabel looked at the girl and thought she looked friendly and helpful

During the lunch hour Liz Parker approached the table where Max and Isabel were sharing lunch, “Hey Isabel.”

“Oh hey Liz, have a seat.”

“Another time may be, my friends Maria and Alex are waiting for me there.” she pointed to another table not far away “I just came to give you these notes.”

But Isabel wasn’t listening to Liz, instead she was looking at the table, which Liz had pointed to, in particular she was looking at the boy who was sitting there. She couldn’t put her finger on it, but something about him had piqued her interest.
‘He seems different from all the other guys.’ she thought to herself

“Isabel?”
“Huh…oh yeah thanks. I really appreciate it. Ouch!” She turned to glare at Max and realized what he wanted, “By the way Liz, this is my brother Max. He’s in the same year as us.”
“Hi Max.” Liz replied with a smile and Max smiled shyly and extended his hand
Isabel rolled her eyes and looked at Alex once again, ‘He is going to be my boyfriend!’

One year later ~

The first year at WRH had passed quickly for Isabel. She made a lot of friends none of who she was actually close to but she liked going out with them since they were fun.

Max had asked Liz out at the end of their sophomore year and she had agreed and since then they had been an item. Inwardly Isabel was jealous because she wanted the same thing but she’d had no luck in talking to Alex. He’d been on her radar since day one but somehow they had no common friends apart from Liz and it just so happened that whenever Liz was with Alex Isabel was somewhere else and vice-versa.

Discreetly she’d managed to ask Liz a few things about Alex, which she carefully filed away in her memory.

Liz was over at the Evans’ one evening, spending time with Max. When Max went to attend to a phone call Isabel saw her chance to ask her about Alex.

“What movie are you guys watching?” she asked in a bored manner as she stepped in to the room and sat down on the sofa next to Liz
“Not sure…Max picked something up from the store.”

“Do Maria and Alex mind you spending so much time with Max all of a sudden?”
Isabel pretended to study her nails while waiting for Liz to reply
“Umm, I guess at first they were slightly annoyed but they know I like him a lot so they don’t mind. Besides, Alex shouldn’t complain.”

“Really…why?” Isabel barely managed to conceal her interest
“Because for the first part of sophomore year he spent all his time with Rachel, and never had time for Maria and me.”

Isabel frowned, she remembered hearing from one of the people in her circle that Rachel Wood was crazy to be seeing that nerd, Alex Whitman. At that time she’d been in the school for two months and was still feeling her way around. Vaguely she’d heard that Rachel Wood was one of the hotties of their batch but since the school was so huge it was easy to miss people. She’d never actually seen Alex with her and moreover had only seen Rachel in passing, their paths never actually crossing.

“But I never saw Alex with her.”
“That’s ‘coz she dumped him after a few months saying that he bored her and soon after she transferred to some swanky private school. Poor guy was so upset. She was his first girlfriend and I could just kill her for being so cruel to him. He hasn’t shown any interest in anyone since, probably scared of getting hurt again. All those stupid girls don’t know what they’re missing out on.”

Determined not waste anymore time in getting the guy she wanted, she decided to join the Quiz Team. Alex was a quizzer after all and this would be a sure shot way of becoming friends with him.
Her first day on the team she spoke to him, “Hi, I’m Isabel.”
“I know who you are Isabel.” he replied shyly and looked down in to his book again
“I guess you’ve heard about me from Liz.” she persisted
“That would be correct.”
“So how long have you been on the team?”
Alex had to look at her; he knew it would be rude if he kept answering her while looking at the book but he was afraid of what he was feeling, he knew he was falling for the beauty before him.
“Since the 9th grade.”
“Liz told me you also play guitar.”
“Yes I do. What all has she told you about me?”

And they had chatted for a while longer until the teacher in-charge of the team had interrupted them.

A few weeks later Isabel walked up to Alex while he was opening his locker, “You’re looking good today Alex.”
Turning to look at her he tried not to grin broadly, “Umm, thanks Isabel.”
“But” Isabel reached out and put her hand on his collar “you will look better if you unbutton this top button, won’t make you look so preppy.” Once she had done that she smoothened the collar out, letting her finger linger for a second longer than necessary.

“I’ll see you later.” she patted his arm as she walked away, smiling to herself

Alex stood there looking at her disappearing figure with a confused look on his face, ‘Was she hitting on me?’
The last time he’d been with a girl it had ended in disaster, he had been heartbroken and he didn’t want to fall for another beautiful girl only to have his heart stomped on all over again.

He had come to the conclusion that Rachel must have just been interested in seeing how it was to date a nerd and when she got bored and fed up of him she dumped him like a hot brick. Often he kicked himself for not listening to Liz and Maria and his instincts. They had told him that it was strange that a snob like Rachel could have any real interest in him. While the popular kids had wondered why Rachel was with him in the first place.

‘No no…I am not going to fall for Isabel Evans, no matter how nice she seems.’ He told him determinedly

Everyday Isabel made it a point to talk to Alex, even if it was just for ten minutes. Finally after three months she decided she would tell him how she felt but instead of telling him face to face she wrote him a letter first and then asked him to meet her in one corner of the quadrangle.

As he approached, her heart beat faster.
“Hi…thanks for coming.” She looked around and it seemed like their entire batch was looking in their direction

He sat down next to her and kept quiet for a moment before saying softly, “Isabel…I read the letter and thank you for telling me how you feel but I only like you as a friend.”
Isabel didn’t know where to look, she wanted to slap him for agreeing to meet her when his answer was in the negative but she also knew that she was being irrational. And she wanted to run for cover as fast as she could because she could see Alex’s friends from the team approaching them quickly.

“Oh…okay. Then I guess we’ll just be friends.”
She walked away as fast as she could, highly embarrassed.

After that day Isabel avoided Alex as much as she could apart from the daily ‘hi’ and ‘bye’. She even stopped looking at him if he passed by and sat in the corner furthest from him in class.

At first Alex didn’t mind, he just put it down to her being a little uncomfortable and expected that once she got past that they could go back to their regular chats. But when it didn’t happen he started getting worried. He tried speaking to her but her answers were clipped and to the point.

Isabel had decided that she needed to stop being so enthusiastic when it came to Alex and back off and she liked how it was working.

She fell sick with Chicken Pox just before the start of senior year and the doctor told her that she would miss three weeks of school. Although she was very ill she liked the attention her illness got her from her friends and family.
And she thanked the illness the day the phone rang and she heard Alex on the other end. It was the first time he had called her.

“Hi, how’re you feeling?”
“Pretty lousy to tell you the truth, I never thought Id say this but I miss coming to school.”
She heard him chuckle at the other end and smiled, “Who gave you my number…Liz?”
“Who else.”

They spoke for a few more minutes before hanging up.
The day before she was to return to school he gave her a call, “Hey there, all set to get back to the grind stone?”
“Ready and raring to go.” she answered with a laugh
“I have a favour to ask of you.”
“Go ahead.”
“Will you have lunch with me tomorrow? I know that your friends will be with you all day so I thought lunch would be the best time for us to hang out a bit. I want to spend some time with you without your friends hogging all of your attention.”

Isabel wanted to jump up and down with joy but kept calm, “Yeah okay. I’ll see you tomorrow.”
They started spending every lunch break together much to everyone’s amazement.

One evening Isabel was sitting at her study table when the phone rang, “Hello.”
“Hey pretty girl, do you believe in magic?”
Isabel laughed happily, “Hey Alex…umm I’m not sure. Why?”
“Go to your front door, open it and look to your right on the wall.”
“Alex, what’re you up to?”
He could detect the amusement in her voice and smiled, “Just do it and call me back when you’re done.”

“Wait…Alex.” But he had put the phone down

Rushing down the stairs, she practically flew through the living room and yanked the door open. There outside, stuck on the wall next to the door was a big sheet of paper with a few Hershey’s Kisses stuck on the edges of the paper. In the center was a poem for her.
It was witty and romantic and made her laugh. She looked around expecting to see Alex but didn’t spot him. With a sigh she went back inside and she dialed his number but instead of Alex she got his mother, “I’m sorry Isabel but Alex isn’t at home right now. I’ll tell him to call you back.”

As she was about to dial his mobile number her phone rang and she jumped, “Alex?”
“Yeah it’s me. Did you like it?”
“You’re crazy you know that.” she laughed light heartedly “ The first time you come to my house you stick a piece of paper next to the front door. Luckily my father hadn’t seen it or you sticking it. He might have thought you’re insane. But…I love it! You’re adorable. No one’s done something like this for me before. Next time you come here you better ring the bell.”

Alex laughed and then asked “Want to go for a walk then?”
“Right now…wait, where are you?”
“Standing on the curb outside your house.”

Once more she flew downstairs, nearly running her father over, “I’m going out for a while daddy.”
She slowed down when she opened the door and walked up to Alex and squeezed his hand, “Thanks. Have you been here all this while?”
“No actually after I stuck the paper I raced back home to shower and then as I was walking out of the house I called you. Just forgot to mention that I was calling from my cellphone.”
They walked down the street with no particular destination in mind in silence; very comfortable with each other until Isabel decided it was time to put an end to the jig they had been doing around each other for the past several weeks.

Taking hold of his wrist she stopped him, “When did you change your mind?”
He looked at her, the confusion evident in his eyes, “Oh don’t make this difficult Alex…you know what I mean. When did you realize that you like me more than just as a friend?”
“The first day of school when I didn’t see you in the hallway and in the classroom and in the quiz room. I realized that I missed you, more than I would miss a friend.” he answered quietly

Alex took hold of both her hands and stepped closer to her, looking in to her eyes, “I was so scared of falling for you that I fought against it for a along time. I thought you’d be just like Rachel, and that I was your latest experiment or something like that to keep you entertained but I was so wrong Iz. You’re not like that at all. You’re wonderful and beautiful and I’m deeply-deeply in like with you Isabel Evans.”

Isabel immediately threw her arms around his neck and hugged him so tightly that he nearly lost balance, before she pulled away, “I’ve been waiting for this for two years and the feeling’s mutual Alex.”

They kissed then, at the side of the road, not caring which passerby saw.
“So are you my boyfriend now?” Isabel asked with a blush on her cheeks
“You bet I am.” Alex replied and kissed her again, this time deeper and with much more intensity.
