Please excuse any grammar errors. I was supposed to have written this last week but I didn’t get a chance until this evening.
I watch from afar. I’ve had years of practice. I’m rarely seen by others but I’m there. I’ve watched Max and Isabel grow up in a loving home. I’ve watched the people around me fall in love. Love that is unreachable...unobtainable. Especially from the one green eyed girl that I’ve watched for years grow into a beautiful young woman.
It’s been easy to watch her over the years. To watch as she nibbles on her pencil eraser when her work gets difficult. To watch as her brows draw together in concentration. To watch as her full lips form smiles and her laugh fills the room. To watch her green eyes brighten with excitement over something as simple as a decent grade on a test.
Yes, I’ve had years to watch the people around me without interruptions. Years to observe this piece of the Earth I call home.
Walking through the halls, I feel the excitement radiating from the other students. It’s Valentine’s Day. A day when the girls get flowers, candies, or jewlry. A day the guys get cutsie stuffed animals from their girlfriends. A day I detest. A day I should have stayed in bed and I would have if Hank hadn’t had such a hangover that he called in sick.
The day is still early but the school is already filled with giggly and jubilant faces. I sit through class after class observing the results of this worthless holiday. It was getting quite sickening watching the girls gush over their gifts and then gloat to the ones without. Then to hear the guys boast of what wonderful gifts they gave and what they may receive later for the kind gesture.
Finally lunch arrived. I don’t even know why I came today. This is such torture for me. I sit in the courtyard, no one noticing me. Max and Isabel are off studying for some test they are determined to pass leaving me to fend for myself in all the mushy surroundings. I watch as the excitement of the school’s atmosphere grow. Tonight is the Valentine’s Dance. The Gym is already half way decorated and looking as sappy as ever.
With a soft grunt I get up, throw away my uneaten lunch and start toward the nearest doors. Pulling the door open I hear her voice. There’s no mistaken the silky tone. The voice that sounds like an angel to me. I slip away unnoticed but stay within hearing range.
She’s upset. I can hear the sadness and the tears in her voice. My heart involuntarily clenches at the sound.
“Why today Liz? What asshole would break up with his girlfriend on Valentine’s day?” She asked the smaller girl, the one who Max was always staring at.
Liz softly consoles her but I ignore the words as an image of brilliant green eyes red and swollen from crying pops in my head. Peaking around the corner, I see Liz put her arm around Maria’s shoulder that shook from her sobs. Her head was hung in defeat.
I watched as Liz steered her off, probably toward the nearest bathroom to wash her face and fix her makeup. I turn just as the bell rings and I start toward my next class, only instead of listening to Mr. Retinmeir’s instruction on proper use of reflexive pronouns, I can’t get the image of Maria out of my mind. I kept hearing her words repeat over and over, the hurt clearly heard over her anger and sadness.
The next class was just the same. I couldn’t concentrate on what algebra equations could be used for certain measurements. Instead, I took a blank piece of paper and with a wave of his hand over it, it became thinker like a card. Closing my eyes I searched my memory for the perfect image. I settled on a time that happened about two weeks ago in the CrashDown where she worked in as a waitress. It was during a slow period, Max and I had gone in for some sodas. Ok, it was more so he could gock at Liz. But Maria was standing behind the counter in her funny uniform and alien antennas on her head. She was talking with Liz and her other friend, Alex, I think. It was he who said something and had her laughing so hard that tears came to her eyes.
Using that image, I quickly sketched her on the paper before me. By the time the bell rang to change classes I was finished and satisfied with my work. Instead of going to Science, I went out to the football field. Taking my time, I walked around the fence line and gathered several purple flowers. Ok, they are weeds but they would work fine.
While no one was in the hall, I found her locker and opened it. Yes, I used my powers, makes it much simpler. Taking a deep breath my eyebrows drew together as I concentrated. With a wave of my hand the weeds became a full bouquet of roses. Their color, a unique purple, light in shade with just a hint of pink on the tips. I quickly wrote a note below the sketch and tucked it between the stems. With the hall still empty, I quietly closed her locker and went off to wait for the end of school.
Finally the last bell of the day rang. I was too distracted to go to my last class so I ditched it. I also wanted to make sure I was around when she went to her locker. I didn’t have to wait long. Maria’s step didn’t have the usual bounce. Her head was still lowered and she refused to meet others in the eye.
I made sure that I couldn’t be seen by her but I had a clear view. I watched, my stomach tightening, as she slowly opened her locker. Liz was chatting away, probably trying to cheer her friend up.
Maria’s gasp could be heard over the rushing students. Her eyes grew large and her mouth gaped open. Her bag dropped to the ground as she reached in and withdrew the bouquet. I held back the laugh that threatened to escape at the sight of Liz’s even more surprised look.
Maria pulled the card from the flowers and read it aloud. I couldn’t hear her voice but I watched her lips.
Never should eyes as beautiful as yours should shed a tear.
Never should lips as red and full as yours should frown.
Don’t fret, one day your Prince Charming shall come.
I didn’t sign it. But it was worth it as she smiled. Letting out a sigh and feeling much better inside, I turn and leave hoping that she finds a guy one day that will appreciate her and care for her all his long days.
