Fantasies in the Flesh
Prologue
Max sat up in bed gasping for air as he desperately clutched the drenched sheets in his hands.
Every night was always the same damn thing. He would always have the same repetitive dreams, more like repetitive nightmares. They plagued him every single night, ever since Tess had left Earth to return to their home planet along with his unborn child.
Every night he was plagued by the memory of himself making love to Tess that night at the observatory.
Making love to Tess was something that he was desperately trying to forget about. But it was pretty hard to try to forget about them considering those damn recurring nightmares that he’d been having lately.
Max glanced at the alarm clock by his bedside table which read 6:18 a.m. Lucky for him today was Saturday, which meant no school. It also meant that Liz was working at the Crashdown this morning. She was due to start her shift any minute now if he remembered correctly.
He had to see her. Even if she didn’t want to see him.
He quickly pushed the damp covers off of himself and sat up. There was no way in hell that he would manage to fall back asleep no matter what he tried.
He got up from the bed and grabbed a pair of Jeans that was lying on his chair by his computer. He grabbed a simple red sweater and casually threw it over himself.
He knew that Maria would most probably throw a fit when if she saw him enter the Crashdown. She would jump on him and tell him to leave the place, telling him that Liz didn’t want to see him.
Not that he blamed her; he had slept with Tess and gotten her pregnant. They had every right in the world to be pissed with him. But it was killing him inside that she had barely said a word to him ever since Tess had left the planet. He had tried to talk to her several times but she had politely told him that she just needed some time to think things over.
Max sighed and opened the window. If Liz needed sometime to think things over, that was perfectly fine with him.
But he wouldn’t let her let her walk away from all of this. He needed her now more than ever. It didn’t matter how long he’d have to wait for her, but he was determined to get he back.

Liz took a deep breath as she looked at herself in the mirror of her bathroom. She was supposed to be starting her shift in about 4 minutes, but she had been thinking a lot lately and she had made a decision.
She would be taking a break from working at the Crashdown Café. Just for a little while anyways until she got her life back under control.
She took another deep breath and headed downstairs where her father was sure to be found. Sure enough he was there when she got downstairs in the restaurant, sipping coffee at one of the booths of the Café. The restaurant was quiet with only a few early customers. Liz spotted Maria taking a middle-aged man’s order at the far front of the restaurant.
She spotted her father and headed towards him. He looked up when he saw that she wasn’t in her usual Crashdown waitress uniform.
“Liz, your shift’s about to start.” Jeff said, frowning as he looked at her. “What are you doing? Go get in uniform.”
“Dad, there’s something I need to talk to you about.” Liz said as she slid in the booth in front of her dad.
“What is it?” Her father asked, worriedly. “It’s nothing bad is it?”
Liz smiled and shook her head in reassurance. “No, I don’t think so anyways. It’s nothing to be worried about.”
“Good,” Jeff said, breathing out a sighed of relief. “Then what is it?”
“I need...some time to think about thing’s.” Liz said slowly. “I want to take a small break from working here. For a little while.”
“You what?” Jeff asked, his eye’s widening in surprised. “Honey, but why? You’ve been working here since you were fourteen, why would you want to stop working all of a sudden?”
Liz sighed and fiddled with the hem of her shirt absent-mindedly. “I told you I just need some time to think about things.”
“Thing’s like Max Evans?” Jeff asked, knowing the answer even before his daughter spoke.
“No,” Liz said making a face. “Of course not. I just need some time away from this place.”
“Okay then,” Jeff said with a small sigh. “You can take a break if you feel like you need it. And you know that you could always head over to your aunt’s house in Florida if you want. You know your Aunt Sylvia would be more than happy to have you over there again this summer. She’s been asking about you a lot lately.”
Liz nodded. “I don’t think so but it’s nice that she offered I think I’d like to actually stay here this summer.
“ Alright, then.” Jeff said as Liz slid out of the booth and stood up. “But, Liz. I know I don’t need to remind you because I tell you all the time but, if you ever need to talk, you know I’m here for you right? And so is your mother.”
Liz smiled. “Yeah, I know dad.” She paused before turning around. “Thank you."
Jeff nodded and went back to reading his newspaper as Liz turned and headed towards Maria who was busy making a smoothie behind the counter. She immediately looked up when Liz approached her.
“Hey, girlfriend” Maria said, grabbing her order pad from the counter and slipping it inside her apron. “What’s up and why aren’t you in uniform?”
“Oh, um, Maria, about that,” Liz said as the bell rang, signalling that someone had just entered the Crashdown. Maria shot a glance towards the door and her eye’s immediately widened.
Judging by the look etched on her Maria’s face, it could only be one person that was standing at the door this very instant.
“Honey, don’t panic, I’ll get rid of him, okay?” Maria blurted out as she stepped away from the counter.
Max, Liz thought as she felt her heart constrict at the mere sight of him.
She quickly grabbed Maria lightly by the arm to stop her from charging at Max.
“Maria,” Liz whispered harshly. “Please don’t do this, he hasn’t done anything wrong, okay? He’s probably just here to grab something to eat.”
“Yeah, right.” Maria sneered back. “Listen, he slept with a whore who killed my best friend and he got her pregnant with a child who’s probably going to turn out to be exactly like his Best-friend-killing, whoreish, sleazy mother or something.”
“Maria,” Liz said, rolling her eye’s. “Is whore-ish even a word?”
“I don’t want him here, Liz,” Maria said, ignoring Liz’s question. “I’m going to stop him from hurting you again.”
“Maria, I’m not working here anymore.” Liz said, “I decided to take some time off.”
“Wha-?” Maria said, her eye’s widening some more. “You’re ditching me here to work on my own?” She waved a hand around the restaurant. “This is a fierce world, Liz. You simply cannot leave me here to work on my own. You just can’t do this to me right now.”
“Yeah,” Liz said, “Maria, I need this. I just do. I need a break.”
“I understand,” Maria said with a small sigh as she brushed a strand of blond hair out of her face. “I actually do understand this need to get away from the alien-abyss. But please don’t run away like you did last summer? With Alex gone…I need you. I need my best friend with me this summer.”
“Maria, I need some more coffee!”Jeff Parker called out from the booth at the far back of the restaurant. “And customers are waiting to get they’re orders taken.”
“Coming,” Maria called out loudly. She turned back to Liz. “You promise you’re not going to leave Roswell so you can head over to your Aunt Gale’s or something?”
“My aunt Silvia,” Liz corrected her as she made a face. “And, no, I’m not going anywhere this summer. Your stuck here with me, I promise.”
“I’ll be counting on it.” Maria said.
“Oh, and, Maria?” Liz said, grabbing Maria’s arm lightly before Maria had the chance to hurry off. Maria turned and looked at her.
“Don’t be mean to him, okay?” Liz said lightly with a small smile. “I know what he did was wrong. And I’m not ready to forgive him any time soon. But remember that I also pretended to sleep with Kyle. Even though it wasn’t real, he still thought it was and it broke his heart too.”
“Fine,” Maria huffed, shooting a look towards the front door where Max was still standing.
Liz smiled and watched as Maria turned on her heels and headed towards her father’s booth. Liz then turned and headed towards the front of the restaurant where the entrance was. She knew that if she wanted to get out of here she’d have to pass by Max who was standing by the entrance door.
Not something she was looking forward to doing right now.
“Hi, Liz.” Max said as Liz crossed the restaurant, heading towards the entrance door that would lead her to freedom.
“Oh, hi, Max.” Liz said, forcing a small smile on her face. “It’s kind of early; shouldn’t you be like sleeping at this hour or something?”
“Couldn’t sleep.” Max answered with a small shrug, his eyes never leaving hers. “So I decided to get something to eat”
“Oh, okay,” Liz said, visibly uncomfortable. “Well, sit anywhere you want and Maria will take your order.” Liz said, brushing her long brown hair out of her face.
“Oh, aren’t you supposed to be working this morning?” Max asked, looking down curiously at her black tank top and pair of low rise jeans.
Liz shook her head in response. “Actually I am but I’ve decided to stop working here for a little while,” Liz explained. “It’s nothing permanent but I just decided to take a break this summer. I might start again when school starts, I just don’t know yet.”
Max nodded, his face falling slightly. “Oh,”
“Anyways, I better get going.” Liz said. “I’ll see you around, okay?”
“That sounds great.” Max said, forcing a smile on his face but failing miserably. She hated him. It was obvious.
“Bye.” Liz said, still not looking up at him. She hurried past him and pushed the doors open to the restaurant. She stepped outside into the early morning sunshine and took a deep breath, breathing in the cool fresh air.
Damn it, she couldn’t even be around him anymore. It was killing her every time she even got near him. She couldn’t help it though. How was she supposed to get over the fact that he had slept with Tess and gotten her pregnant?? That was something that she simply couldn’t forgive him for right now. It would take some time. Lots of it. Even if a little voice in the back of her head blamed her for everything that had happened. She had been the one who had pushed Max towards Tess. She was the one who had screwed everything up by pretending to have slept with Kyle back in October. God, what had she done? This was all her fault. Or part of it was it was anyways.
She remembered what he had told her a couple of nights ago when they had returned from Las Cruces, the night he had been planning to leave earth to return to his home planet with his ex-wife and his unborn child. What was that thing he had answered her when she had asked him if he loved Tess?
Ahh, yes,
Not like I love you.
That's exactly how he had answered her.
What a joke. What had it meant anyway's?? Not like I love you. It had to mean that he actually did have feelings for her. Or had anyways.
There was no way she was going to be forgiving him anytime soon.
There was just no way.
