Prologue
“Why are you all jittery?” Michael asked, quirking a brow after Liz nearly knocked over a group of salt shakers. Once could have been an accident, twice a coincidence but after the third time, he had to acknowledge that something was up with his best friend.
Liz blushed in embarrassment and mumbled a few words under her breath, all the while trying to focus on refilling the shakers before noon.
“What was that?” Michael persisted, unaware that a few customers had turned to stare and were now curiously watching the pair. Liz, unfortunately, did notice and shot Michael a reprimanding glance. “What?” he asked, unconcerned with the snooping patrons as he tried to figure out what had managed to get through her normally tough exterior.
“I’m not jittery” Liz quickly defended. “I’m just… a little nervous” she admitted and heaved a sigh at the expression Michael wore, knowing he’d want more of an explanation than that. “Kyle’s cousin is flying in today and I’m just scared he won’t like me” she confessed, feeling only a fraction better now that she’d admitted what had been on her mind for the last week.
“Why would it matter?” Michael shrugged, unable to see what the big deal was.
“Because the two of them are as close as any two best friends” Liz stated as though it should have been obvious. “They used to spend summers together when they were kids and when he went off to NYU after high school, the two of them e-mailed and IM’d each other all the time. He’s this… really big influence on Kyle and I’m scared that he won’t like me.”
“What’s not to like” Michael replied, finally drawing a smile from Liz.
With a lot more confidence than she previously had, Liz continued with her task until finally, Nancy Parker slowly ambled over, efficiently wiping the smile from her daughter’s face.
Catching sight of the older woman, Michael hopped up from his seat and led her to one of the stools. “Thank you Michael” she smiled kindly as she settled into the old vinyl seat. Her red hair, slightly speckled with gray, was pulled back in a loose bun that emphasized her tired face and sleep deprived eyes. It was a hard sight to see, for both Liz and Michael, who’d grown up inside each other’s pockets since they were four years old.
“What would you like Jose to make you” Liz queried in an effort to quickly divert the attention from her mother’s limited mobility, the result of a car accident five months before.
“A Will Smith, hold the onions” Nancy replied and twisted a discarded straw wrapper between her fingers. Michael recognized the sign and struck up a conversation in an effort to get her mind off the events of the last few months. Liz shot him a grateful look before hurrying off to the kitchen to place her mom’s order with the cook.
“Tell me something Mrs. P, why is it girls are so weird about dates?” he asked. “I mean, what’s wrong with going bowling one night instead of Chez Pierre or something? Doesn’t it count at all that we even want to go out?”
“Michael, you know I love you like my own but please don’t tell me you were bone headed enough to take Maria to a bowling alley on your one year anniversary” Nancy said in an affectionate tone that bellied the severity of her words.
“You see it as being a bone head, I think I did one of those romantic things Maria’s always nagging me for” Michael declared, drawing a laugh from Nancy who failed to see what was so romantic about a bowling alley. “It was where we had our first date” he shrugged and then flushed in embarrassment for sounding like a sap.
“You’re one of the good ones Michael, don’t ever let anyone tell you different” Nancy replied and quickly dropped the subject so as to not embarrass him anymore than he already was.
Before the silence became palpable, the bell above the door rang, signally the arrival of a new customer. Instinctively, both Michael and Nancy turned towards the sound and found Kyle, accompanied by a tall, dark haired guy who neither recognized. “Who’s that?” Nancy wondered as Kyle strolled over.
“Hey Mrs. Parker, Michael” Kyle greeted though his eyes remained wandering, silently pursuing the café for his girlfriend of two years. “I want you two to meet my cousin, Max Evans” he added distractedly.
“It’s nice to meet you” Max said politely and properly introduced himself.
“There she is” Kyle interrupted as Liz walked through the swinging door, unaware of what was going on at the counter. Taking advantage of her distracted mind as she stopped to rewrite the lunch specials on the chalk board, Kyle walked over and kissed her breathless. “Come on, there’s someone I want you to meet.”
Liz felt her pulse race and her eyes widen as she realized his cousin had already arrived. “Oh my god” she silently cursed and frantically began straightening her clothes, convinced she was a mess after spending the entire morning waiting on tables for Agnes who had been a no show.
“Don’t worry, he’s gonna love you” Kyle assured when he noticed her distress. “Come on” he encouraged and left his hand lingering on the small of her back, silently offering his support.
Liz smiled her thanks, more than aware of how silly she was being, yet unable to help it. She just wanted too make a good impression on the one person who had always been there for Kyle, the person she felt as though she already knew personally from all the stories she had heard and silly anecdotes she had read.
“Max Evans, meet the love of my life, Liz Parker” Kyle introduced as their eyes locked and their hands touched.
