Summary: Liz Parker is the teachers pet for every class. She is the president of the senior class at RU, the works. One day she walks into English and her world is blown away as Max Evans, a senior when she was a freshman, and the most popular senior at RU, walks into the class, announcing he will be their permanent sub. Liz feels attraction towards him right away, and will do anything to get his attention.

Author’s Note: I’m back! Scary right? I have so many unfinished fics out there, I’m going to try to not let that happen anymore, I’m finishing fics before I post them, so yeah, this one is shorter, maybe 6 parts to this, I really hope you like it!!!

Chapter 1

Liz Parker strolled enthusiastically into English 12 honors, her last class of the day. It wasn’t that she was happy it was the end of the day, like most everyone else was, but the real reason why she was so happy was because they were getting back their term papers today, and she wanted to know what she had gotten on her own.

She wasn’t a nerd...most of the time, but she was considered teacher’s pet on many occasions and wouldn’t settle for scoring anything less than a 100 on anything she did, and so far all throughout high school, she had achieved that, studying 10 times harder than she had before if she made one simple mistake on anything.

But there was a reason for all of this; she was dead set on getting into Harvard Law School, and she was willing to go to any measure to get in, including devoting 20 hours a week volunteering at various places.

She was an active member of the National Honors Society, the National Foreign Language Honors Society, as well as being the Senior Class President, among many other things; she was a determined girl to say the least.

Liz generally didn’t have time for friends, and she had told herself that starting in Freshman year, but after meeting her best friend in the world, Alex Whitman, she had made an exception, befriending him immediately, and making room for his good friend, and soon hers, Maria Deluca.

Liz Parker was a legend in her small town of Roswell, New Mexico. She was the typical girl next door, bright smile, chest length shiny brown hair, and a look of innocence that always lingered on her face.

She worked in her family diner, the Crashdown, whenever she wasn’t busy with community service, and made a habit of knowing all of their regulars’ names by heart, greeting them warmly every time they entered the restaurant.

To any passerby on the street they would think that Liz was the perfect daughter, student, and human being all around, but she had her dark side, just like everyone else. She still dated, and had recently broken up with her long time boyfriend Kyle Valenti.

It often bored her how everyone trusted her so much, thinking that she could do no bad, she wanted them to treat her like a normal teenager, but she guessed that maybe it was better this way, at least now she could get away with doing pretty much anything she wanted to do.

“Where’s Mrs. MacLean??” Liz frantically asked Alex as she sat down in her normal seat in the front of her row. She couldn’t be absent today…
today was too important!

Liz nervously bit her lip as Alex told her that supposedly she had thrown her back out, so she would be out of school for a while.

“But we can’t have a sub! Alex today was so important!” Liz groaned, resting her head in her hands impatiently.

“Liz, relax, I’m sure she left full instructions for the sub, we’ll still get our term papers back, but really would it be so bad if we didn’t? I mean, I sure don’t want to get mine back, I’m certain that I straight out failed it,” Alex sighed, frowning.

“If anyone failed, I did. Oh my god now that I think about it, I so didn’t state the topic clearly and I think I left out a paragraph and I…”

“Liz! Trust me! You did not fail! If you failed, there would be no hope at all for the rest of us….calm down,” Alex interrupted, laughing. Liz took in a deep breath and let it out, smiling over at Alex in apology. She did this a lot, stressing over something that she really shouldn’t be stressing about, but she couldn’t help wondering if she really had failed it…

She didn’t have time to delve further with this thought, because at that second the whole room was dead silent as the door opened. Liz’s head jerked open and her mouth nearly dropped to the ground as she saw who had entered.

It was Max Evans. THE Max Evans. 3 years ago, when Liz had been a freshman, he had been a senior, and the star senior of the school on top of that. Star quarterback on the football team, valedictorian, and president of every club he had been in, and on top of that, more gorgeous than any boy in the school's entire history.

Liz couldn’t help but form a small crush on him back then, especially after he had smiled at her in the hall that one day, though it had probably just been friendly. Back then she wasn’t necessarily attractive…or popular. She was a short, flat chested girl with thick framed glasses carrying around a million books with her.

Her popularity had come the next year, her sophomore year, when puberty hit her. As if over night, she had sprouted in height, grown better looking, and a chest. She had gotten rid of her chunky glasses and sported brand new contacts.

She had even been asked to join the cheer squad, and stayed on it until this year, deciding she needed a break from all the peppiness, but the popularity stayed with her, as well as the good looks.

Now, 4 years older, Max Evans was even more gorgeous than he was then, if that was possible, and he was their substitute! He was barely out of high school and he was going to be their teacher!

This both excited and enraged Liz. How was she supposed to finish out her senior year with perfect scores if she had someone so young and under qualified teaching her?

“I am your new substitute, Mr. Evans. Well actually, it’s more like a long term sub, Mrs. MacLean unfortunately has to get back surgery, and she’ll be out for a long time yet. As most of you probably know, I graduated from RU, approximately 4 years ago, and I recently graduated from Harvard Law school, earning my bachelors degree in teaching, I hope we can all have a great learning experience while I’m teaching you,” He greeted everyone.

He lost Liz though, after he mentioned that he had graduated from Harvard. Excitement arose in her face and she couldn’t help but smiling. This could be a very good opportunity…he could help her get ready for her interview for Harvard even!

“I’d like to start out the day doing something easy going, but…” at this there was a collective groan, “Mrs. MacLean left strict instructions that I was to pass out your term papers and spend the rest of class helping you figure out why you got the grade you got, so when I call out your name, please come up to my desk and retrieve your paper.”

“It’s Liz’s dream come true,” Alex whispered with humor in his voice. Liz semi-glared at him and sat up straighter as she waited for him to call out her name.

“Liz Parker,” he called out. Liz got up briskly, smoothing out her knee length pink skirt as she walked up to his desk and taking it briskly from him, a large smile breaking out on her face as she saw her grade, “I’m impressed, you got a 100 and then some Ms. Parker.”

“Thanks,” she said, walking back to her desk. Alex leaned over to look at her paper and groaned.

“You got a 110???? God Parker and you thought you’d FAILED!” Alex exclaimed with a chuckle. All Liz could do was blush and glance back over at Max, who had been looking at her as well that second, quickly averting his eyes when she caught him.

“Looks like he’s got his new teachers pet,” Fiona, the girl behind her, whispered to Heather, who sat next to Fiona. Liz couldn’t help but grin at this. Every girl in this class was pining to be his teachers pet, and it looked like Liz would take that spot quite easily now.

I really hope you guys like this :)

Chapter 2

For the first time in her whole high school experience, Liz hadn’t paid attention during class. As if there really was anything to pay attention to, but usually she would have found some type of work to do, instead of daydreaming of ways to make Max notice her.

She didn’t know why he had affected her so much that day 4 years ago, but it was happening again, and stronger than ever. When the bell rang at the end of class Liz gathered her things together and practically pulled Alex out of the classroom.

“We’re going shopping…I threw out all of my clothes from last year and sophomore year…they were my good clothes, now all I have left are these drab things and…”

“Liz you’re rambling, but fine, let’s go shopping,” Alex sighed, laughing.

They piled into her car since he didn’t have one and Liz jetted off for the only mall in town, “Liz what exactly are you trying to do by buying new clothes? You know how the rumor mill works in Roswell! New teacher shows up, and suddenly Liz Parker is styling her hair in the morning again, using makeup again, wearing sexy clothes again…people will talk…you do know this right? I just don’t want you to get hurt,” Alex said softly as they got out of the car 5 minutes later.

“Alex….I know…the way I see this is…I lost my chance before, and more times than not I’m not going to get second chances. And anyways, why would he take an interest in me? Pam Troy and Lulu Chang are in our English class, they’re the prettiest seniors in the school, and everyone knows that!” Liz declared, walking into a store and grabbing some things off the racks.

“Liz Liz Liz….when will you learn? Sure they’re hot, but they aren’t pretty, you’re pretty, and hot, you proved that this year. I mean last year you wore all that makeup and stuff and you were hot, this year you haven’t worn makeup much, and you don’t try as hard, and you’re still hot, you’re pretty all around, they’re just pretty because they have the money and the time to be pretty,” Alex said, handing her a yellow skirt.

A small smile played on Liz’s lips as she walked towards the dressing rooms, “…Thanks Alex, I’m glad you’re my friend,” she said quietly before going in the dressing room.

Over the next hour she modeled various garments to Alex, who either
approved by nodding or disapproved by making revolted faces.

"How about...this?" Liz asked, sauntering out of the dressing room in a lobster red skirt and yellow shirt that the saleswoman had picked out for her. Liz tried to suppress her giggles as Alex'd face turned on such a disgusted look that she thought he would puke right there, but failed and exploded in a fit of laughter.

"Back, in there. Now!" Alex said, taking her by the shoulder and pushing her in the dressing room. He could hear Liz laughing through the curtain and a moment later she came out with all of the clothes that she would be purchasing.

“That’ll be $350.99,” The salesperson said after ringing up the 2 skirts, 2 pairs of jeans and 4 tops that she had decided to get. Liz hesitantly handed over her credit card and a second later walked out of the store with 2 big carrier bags on her arms.

“I forgot how much I love shopping…being frugal and smart is boring sometimes you know. That’s the thing I loved about cheering, the makeup, the glamour, the shopping, but I didn’t like the pressure…that’s why I quit,” Liz said as they drove back.

“Well I for one am glad you quit, I’ll tell you, those years when you were a cheerleader were the most awful years of my LIFE! All of your cheerleading peppy friends didn’t exactly like me you know,” Alex said, frowning.

“They did too! They adored you Alex!” Liz gasped. Alex rolled his eyes and grabbed Liz’s bags as they pulled up in front of the Crashdown, “Let’s go up the back…I don’t want my dad asking questions.”

She took one of the bags and started climbing up the ladder, reaching the top a moment of careful climbing later. It was a lot tougher now that she had a bag in her mouth.

Liz started to put away her new clothes as Alex came into her room, placing the bag on her bed.

“Lizzie! Can you come down here? I need you to help me, it’s swamped in here!” Her father called from downstairs.

“Yeah! Just one second!” She exclaimed, quickly stuffing the rest of her clothes in their proper drawers, “I’ll see you later Alex.”

“Bye, have fun!” he said, smiling as he left her room. Liz quickly threw on her uniform and tying her hair back in a ponytail. She jogged quickly down the stairs and took an ordering pad from the counter.

“Table 14,” her dad told her, gesturing to a table with a single person sitting down with a menu covering their face. Liz nodded and walked off towards the table, pulling a pencil from behind her ear as she reached it.

“Welcome to the Crashdown, may I take your order?” She asked, poising her pencil above the order pad so she could quickly write down this person’s order.

“I’d like to get…..the Crashdown Special,” a deep voice said from behind the menu, one that she swore she had heard before.

“And to drink?” Liz asked, trying to peer over the menu to see him, but he held it up a bit higher as he looked at drinks.

“Hum…I’ll take a cherry coke, add some lemon in it please,” he said, finally lowering his menu to hand to her, revealing that it was Max Evans.

“Ah, Ms. Parker, you work here?” he asked, genuinely surprised. Liz nodded, taking his menu from him quickly.

“My parents own this place. Your food will be out shortly,” Liz said, walking away as soon as she could and placing her order.

“What was that about Chica? You took the poor man’s order and practically bolted!” Maria said as Liz came up to the window to place Max’s order.

“Do you know who that is??” Liz asked out of breath, pulling Maria to the back room.

“Umm….some random guy that happens to be really hot?” Maria guessed,
a grin on her face.

“NO! MAX EVANS!” Liz squealed as quietly as she possibly could. Maria’s jaw dropped and she hurried over to the window looking at him as if to make sure Liz was telling the truth.

“Omigosh it IS!” Maria squealed. Liz glared at her quickly, pulling her away from the door.

“Stop it! He’ll see you!” Liz hissed, though a smile was threatening to show through her scowl, “I have to go, his order’s up, I’ll talk to you later.”

With that Liz quickly came out of the back room and grabbed Max’s order, taking it quickly over to him.

“Thanks, looks good,” he said, smiling up at her. Liz smiled and was about to turn and leave when his voice stopped her, “Would you mind sitting for a second? I wanted to ask you something.”

“Um, sure but just for a second…” Liz agreed immediately, sitting down across from him as he started on his burger.

“Where have I seen you before? I mean rather than class today….you seemed so familiar when I saw you at first…like I’ve seen you somewhere before,” Max said, wiping his mouth off.

“Umm, you’ve probably seen me waitressing here a couple of times…I’ve worked here since my freshman year,” Liz quickly offered, not wanting to tell him that it was that one day in the hallway. She knew it! She knew it had meant something to him! She just wasn’t even ready to ask him about it.

“Yeah, that’s probably it. I used to come by this place ALL the time when I was in school, not so much afterwards though…I left Roswell almost at once to go to Harvard, I just got back about a week ago actually,” Max told her while eating some fries.

“Really? That’s cool, I’ve always wanted to go to…..” Liz started to say.

“Liz! We need you on the floor!” Her father barked from the cash register. Liz gave an apologetic smile to Max before getting up and leaving after saying bye to Max, swaying her hips a little more than she usually would as she walked away, and hoping that Max was watching.

Later that night Liz stayed up extra late putting her hair in bigger curlers, hoping to get a slightly wavy effect for the morning. She smiled when she was finished and quickly hopped in bed, careful not to disturb the rollers, and staring at the ceiling until she fell asleep.

She held her breath in anticipation as she slowly took the first roller out of her hair the next morning. After it was out she quickly did the rest before opening her eyes, a satisfied smile spreading across her lips as she saw how her hair curled delicately around her shoulders and in a few other places.

She used to do this all the time when she was cheerleading, curl her hair at night the night before game day. She almost missed doing that, but was somewhat glad her days were freer, not as busy.

With one last smile she ran over to her dresser, pulling out the yellow skirt she had bought and a light pink spaghetti strapped tank top, and to cover it a white jean jacket.

She pulled each on one by one and applied her makeup, adding just a touch bit more mascara and eyeliner than she usually would, and a coat of strawberry lip gloss. This way it wasn’t too different. Her clothes and hair….yes, but makeup…not really.

Finally adding a little hairspray Liz grabbed her car keys and ran downstairs and straight out the door before her parents could see her and ask what was up.

Once inside her car she took a deep breath and let it out, suddenly realizing that she didn’t even HAVE his class until last hour….6th hour….it was at the end of the day, why had she bothered dressing up when she would look bad then?

She decided to just play her day out as a normal day….6th hour would come soon enough.

I really hope you guys liked this, more up wednesday or thursday :)

Chapter 3

Liz didn’t know a time she was more excited to enter English as she was that day. The second she walked into the room she could feel Max’s eyes linger on her body. She walked over to Alex, whom she had seen earlier, and sat down.

“It worked, I think his eyes became 10 times bigger when he saw you,” Alex whispered so that no one else would hear. Liz smiling slightly and pulled her book out and crossing her legs as Max got up to start class.

15 minutes later they were all silent as they worked on the assignment handed out. Liz tried her best to complete this as quickly as she could without making a stupid mistake, but it was hard around Max, he distracted her too much.

It was very hard to keep her eyes focused on the English worksheet in front of her when there was someone so gorgeous sitting not 10 feet away from her.

Perhaps it was also the other way around though, because every time Liz would glance up, he was looking over in her direction, making sure to avert his eyes the moment their eyes met though, obviously embarrassed.

This continued all throughout class until finally the bell rang, “You coming?” Alex asked, picking up his books and waiting by Liz’s desk as she took slower than usual to gather her things. She shook her head no in response and got up, walking to Max’s desk.

“Mr. Evans…I was wondering if maybe you needed some help after school, like grading papers, something like that?” Liz asked tentatively, shuffling her books from arm to arm as she awaited his answer eagerly.

She glanced over to Alex, who was still in the room, looking at her quizzically and signaled for him to go home. He rolled his eyes before waving goodbye and leaving the classroom, Liz then turning her attention back to Max.

A thoughtful expression appeared on Max’s face as he thought it over and in the end; he nodded, gesturing for her to sit down in the desk by his own desk. Liz quickly set her books in the cage under the desk and waited for him to give her the work.

“You can help me by filing these papers, by date,” Max said, getting up and setting a large stack of papers on her desk and a file bin next to her. Liz smiled up at him before setting off to work, glad she had thought of this.

She casually flipped her hair over her shoulder and crossed her legs at the knee, inwardly grinning when she noticed Max’s eyes stray from what he was doing now and again to sneak a peak at her.

“So, Ms. Parker, to continue our discussion from yesterday…you were telling me that you always wanted to go somewhere before your father called you over…” Max said after half an hour of silence except for the rustling of papers.

“Harvard. I’ve always wanted to go to Harvard, ever since I was old enough to think about school. Harvard is ultimately what I have been working for my whole life,” Liz said, taking her eyes off of her papers for a second to look at Max.

“That’s a good choice, Harvard is a great school. I myself originally planned to go there to study law, to become a lawyer like my father and his father before him, but once I was there, I had no passion for it, so I switched my major to teaching, saving me a couple years of schooling in the long run and a heck of a lot of money,” Max said, finishing by letting out a chuckle.

“Well I’m glad you followed your heart,” Liz said thoughtfully before turning her attention back to her work, but Max didn’t seem to be finished talking.

“Tell me…I know I saw you somewhere else besides at the Crashdown…I’ve thought it out, and when I was a senior here, you would be a freshman…did we ever meet in school?” Max asked, leaning back in his chair a bit.

This was Liz’s moment of truth. She could either tell Max about that one single, maybe not even real smile or sound like an idiot…or figure out he really had meant that smile.

“Well….um, this may sound like really, really crazy…but…”

“Mr. Evans, the principal would like to see you, talk to you about your schedule and stuff…” the vice principal interrupted, sticking his head in the door. Liz nearly sighed in relief but instead gave Max a shrug before getting up.

“I’ll see you in class tomorrow Mr. Evans,” she said, smiling before walking quickly out of the room.

Once completely out of the school and in her car she leaned against the seat and smiled. She was getting closer to him…to her dream. Even if it was one little step at a time, she was getting there no doubt.

This routine continued for the next week, Liz everyday after class would ask Max if he needed any help, and he would always come up with a large stack of papers, most of the time just junk, but she did it anyways. She would do anything to have time with him.

The topic of him knowing her before didn’t come up again after that day, and Liz wasn’t going to bring it up herself if Max didn’t first…she was still dreading what he would think of it once he finally did hear it, that’s if he actually did hear it.

She had almost completely convinced herself that Max cared for her as much as she cared for him, but sometimes he seemed sort of far away, not as into her as he seemed to be sometimes.

Alex was constantly worrying for her, always telling her to be careful, that he didn’t want her to get hurt. Liz knew he meant well, but it was starting to get on her nerves a bit.

“Alex I’m a big girl!” Liz whined later that day. They were currently at the local movie theatre, catching up on the new releases since there was nothing else to do.

“I know Liz, but really, he’s like what….23? 24 years old? You’re not even 18 yet! I can sense a major no no when I see one Liz. I mean all that needs to get out is that you’re relatively interested in Max and soon the whole city will know and you know how the rumor mill works here.

First it’s just a crush, and then before you know it you’re married with 10 children! Do you want to be the girl with ten children waiting at home?” Alex asked as they waited for the movie to start, “You know what, don’t answer that, because I suspect you’re thinking sure, if they’re Max Evan’s kids…yeah I thought so.”

Liz grinned, quickly stuffing a handful of popcorn in her mouth to hide the grin. Truth was, that didn’t sound bad….well maybe the ten kids, but married to Max Evans? She could handle it.

“Liz, I just think you should be a bit more careful…”

“Shhhh, the movie is starting!” Liz whispered, throwing a piece of popcorn in his hair before giggling and turning to face the screen.

2 hours later they walked out of the theatres into the brisk November air, “Brrr, it’s getting cold already, are you sure you did the right thing, buying those little mini skirts?” Alex asked, opening the passenger side of the car for Liz.

Liz was about to step inside the car when someone called out her name, and made her freeze in her spot, she stared at Alex in disbelief, not wanting to turn around and for it to be someone else.

The second her eyes met Alex’s though, she knew it was who she thought it was. Max Evans. And from the other look in Alex’s eyes…he wasn’t very happy about Max showing up at this moment.

If Liz didn’t know Alex so utterly and completely, she would’ve thought Alex had a thing for her, but they had long since established that their friendship was strictly that, a friendship.

With a brief warning glance at Alex Liz turned around and smiled at Max as he walked up to them.

“Mr. Evans! What a small world!” Liz exclaimed, sticking her hands in her back pockets as she stood there looking at him.

“Yes indeed Ms. Parker, hello Mr. Whitman,” Max said, greeting Alex. Alex made a revolted face before speaking up.

“Please, it’s Alex….Mr. Whitman is my dad…my grandpa even…I really don’t want to be anymore like them than I have to,” Alex said, letting out a laugh and causing everyone else to laugh too.

“Alright then, Alex. Well, I’ll see you two in class on Monday, unless of course you plan on skipping…but I don’t think I’d have to worry about that with two model students like yourselves now would I?” Max joked, smiling once more at Liz and then gesturing to Alex before walking off towards his own car.

“Mop up on aisle 15! Massive pool of drool!” Alex said a minute later as Liz stared wistfully after Max’s retreating figure. She shook her head and put her hand to her chin, smacking Alex playfully when there was no drool there.

They got into the car and listened to Britney Spears full blast the rest of the way home. It was always a joke of theirs. Neither of them could sing at all, and in their opinion, neither could she, so they always blasted her cds in the car when they drove places, singing along with her just as horribly.

“Give me a siiii-eeee-igggnn hit me baybee one more tiiiime!!” Alex sang in his false girl voice. Liz was doubled over now from laughing so hard and Alex had to open the door for her so she could get out.

“God I love you Alex, you always know how to make me laugh,” Liz said, wiping away her tears from laughing. Alex smiled and reached out, giving her one of his uber-tight bear hugs until she squealed that she couldn’t breathe.

“I’ll see you on Sunday, Maria’s coming with us to the party,” Alex said, referring to the party one of Liz’s ex-cheerleading teammates was throwing.

“Bye Lex Luther,” Liz said, wiggling her fingers at him.

“Later Lizzie McGuire,” Alex replied, using their code names for each other. Alex was and had always been a huge superman fan, and Liz had a fascination with Lizzie McGuire, the TV show, so the names always seemed appropriate.

Liz waited until Alex drove away to go inside, making sure to lock up behind her before going upstairs to get ready for bed, wishing she could always have days like today.

I hope you like this chapter despite me hating it :? lol :)

Chapter 4

Sunday approached faster than Liz thought it would, and soon she was standing in her bedroom, pulling her hair back from her face as she waited for Alex and Maria to pick her up for the party.

She had chosen to wear a cute red mini skirt and plain black baby tee, along with some flip flops, nothing too fancy. It wasn’t like she had any reason to dress up for tonight or anything.

Somehow Alex had convinced Maria that Liz needed her to set Liz up with someone, someone to keep her busy so that she wouldn’t pursue Max anymore, which partially enraged Liz and partially just made her want to just quit it all and go back to the way she used to be.

All she had wanted for tonight was to have fun with her friends, be free and not caring about anything, but now it seemed the night would stretch out slower than normal.

“Liz, you ready, they’re waiting,” her mom said, cracking the door open. Liz smiled and grabbed a light jacket and her purse, running down the stairs and out of the Crashdown quickly.

Maria’s Jetta was waiting in front with Alex in the backseat, Maria driving, “Hey Chica, are you ready to paaartaaay!” Maria said, smiling at Liz as she got in. Liz laughed and buckled up before Maria drove off.
She glanced back at Alex, who looked particularly sour that moment, “What’s up Alex?” Liz asked, turning around in her seat all the way to face Alex.

“Not much…” Alex said, glancing out the window. Liz frowned and looked over to Maria for answers but Maria’s face was as blank as Alex’s was. Liz sighed and sat straight again as they made their way to the house that the party was being held at.

Once there Liz jumped out and waited for Alex and Maria to get out of the car before walking inside.

“Liz! Hey!” Susan Wallman, one of Liz’s ex-cheer mates said, walking up and hugging her.

“Hey Suze,” Liz replied, “Great outcome!”

“I know, I wasn’t expecting this many people! Even Isabel Guerin came!” Suzie said, pointing to a tall model like blonde, one of the most popular seniors in the school. Her older brother was Michael Guerin, who had been on the football team with Max, and was also a senior when Liz was a freshman.

Liz nodded and moved on after talking to Suzie a minute more. She was cool and all, but her voice was like nails on a chalkboard…not very easy to hold a conversation with her.

“So far this BITES! If this party doesn’t get a little more interesting, I’m out,” Liz said, walking over to Alex and Maria, who were talking over by the kitchen.

“I agree, though I bet Alex wouldn’t mind just spending the rest of the time drooling at Isabel Guerin. He so has a thing for her,” Maria said, smiling as she took a sip of her drink, whatever it was.

Alex blushed a deep crimson before muttering something that was supposed to be a protest.

“Awww, c’mon Alex, perk up!!” Liz said, giggling. She turned around to throw her cup away and all of a sudden froze before she could even take a step.

Standing not 5 feet away was Max Evans, next to Michael Guerin! Michael had obviously came because Isabel called him, she looked upset, and Max had just decided to come along with him.

She began to back up so she could get away without him seeing her when she tripped over the edge of a rug and tumbled back into a large group of people, knocking most of them over.

“Oh my god I’m so sorry!” Liz said, getting herself up. She only realized then that it was a big mistake knocking them over…them being a very drunk varsity football team.

“Why if it isn’t little Lizzie Parker, why don’t you watch where you’re going you slut,” Chris Parks sneered, getting himself up off the ground and standing in front of Liz.

Her eyes widened and she slowly started to back up, “I’m sorry ok?”
“She’s sorry,” Steve Barton mimicked in a high voice, “You know, I can think of a thing or two you could do to apologize to me.”

“Ew! Back off ass hole!” Liz exclaimed as Steve reached out and tried to kiss her. Unfortunately Liz had backed herself against the nearest wall and she couldn’t get past them.

“Little Lizzie’s scared, how sweet,” Nathan Osborne said, advancing on her.

“Just leave me alone!” Liz exclaimed, trying to push past them. They wouldn’t let her go that easily though. Steve grabbed a hold of her arm and pressed her against the wall, crushing his mouth against hers.

Liz could hear the frantic cries of her friends in the crowd as she bit as hard as she could on Steve’s lip, pushing him away with all of her might.
Surprisingly, he went flying away from her, and every single of the football players’ eyes were saucer wide.

Liz soon realized why when recognized Max’s back in front of her, “Listen dude…we’re sorry, we didn’t mean…” Nathan said to a very angry Max.
“Yeah Max, we’re sorry really,” Chris piped in. Max just sneered at him before turning to Steve.

“Do you like making a sport of harassing people Steve? Especially a girl,” Max said, hoisting him up off the ground.

“Dude…I’m sorry ok? You know me, we’re cool man! I was just…I’m just a little wasted….” Steve trailed off.

“Get out of here,” Max simply said, releasing him before leading Liz away from the crowd and outside on the back porch.

“Thank you,” Liz said quietly, sitting on one of the steps of the deck and resting her chin on her knees.

“No problem…is it alright if I call you Liz?” Max asked.

“Of course. Can I ask you a question Mr. Evans? Why’d you just…let him go like that?” Liz asked, taking her head off her knees so that she could look over at him.

“He’s underage…I could get in a lot of trouble if he went to the cops,” Max explained simply, “Are you sure you’re ok Liz?”

Liz simply nodded, though tears were silently welling up in her eyes as she thought of what could’ve happened if Max hadn’t saved her.

Somehow Max figured out that she was crying and he took her chin, turning her eyes toward him, “Hey, don’t cry, it’s alright, Steve’s a jerk, don’t let this get to you.”

Liz let in a shaky breath before nodding and looking away. There was just something about his gaze that was hypnotizing, and Liz didn’t know what she’d do if she kept looking long enough. Max reached a hesitant hand out and brushed a stray piece of hair out of her face, his hand lingering maybe a second more than it should’ve on the side of her face.

They sat in the peaceful silence for a few more minutes before Liz finally spoke up again, “Mr. Evans…you know how you asked me about the whole us knowing each other before you were my substitute? Well….the reason is…this is going to sound really stupid to you but…one day back in my freshman year, I was just walking down the hallway, struggling to carry all of my books, and you walked past me…and well, I swear that you smiled at me, I know it sounds really stupid, I just, I don’t know,” Liz said all in one breath, exhaling deeply when she was finished.

Max raised his eyebrows as he looked at her and then a look of confusion covered his features. Liz immediately took this for a sign of disgust and started mumbling how stupid she was, jumping up from where she sat immediately.

She would’ve made it all the way back inside if Max hadn’t reached out and grabbed her arm, stopping her.

“Wait, I remember…I was just trying to remember why, I think I have an idea though. If I remember correctly you weren’t necessarily Ms. Popularity then…that’s right…” A small smile formed over Max’s face as he thought about it, “You were that girl with all of the books and glasses. I thought you looked adorable, you were so small, at least 2 feet shorter than myself, and you just had this expression of pure innocence on your face.”

“Oh that’s such a lovely way to be remembered…I hated those glasses, contacts are way better.” Liz giggled nervously, avoiding eye contact with him. Max chuckled and Liz glanced over at him, smiling slightly.

Her eyes nearly bulged out of her head as he slowly began to lean forward, not knowing what he was going to do until finally he planted a small kiss on her forehead, feather light, but impacting her like nothing else ever had.

He moved back mere inches, cradling her face in his hands and gazing deep into her eyes. Liz held her breath in anticipation of what was to come, but it never did.

Just as he started to lean in again the slide door opened, “Max, I’m ready to go….oh…I’m sorry,” Isabel said, turning away immediately.

Liz bit her lip nervously and turned away as Max got up, “I guess I’ll see you Monday then Mr. Evans…goodnight,” Liz said quietly, not looking up at him.

“Goodnight Liz,” Max replied, gazing down at her. He wanted her to look up at him so bad so he could see if she thought what almost happened would have been a mistake, or if she was as crushed as he was when Isabel had opened that door, but unfortunately she kept her gaze down and Max left, leaving a very thick air of awkwardness behind him.

Chapter 5

Liz stared at herself in the girls’ bathroom mirror right before 6th hour was about to start. This was it. She could go to 6th hour, do the right thing, and just pretend like Max hadn’t almost kissed her…or she could skip 6th hour completely and take the easy way out.

The only problem with that was, she’d still have to go to school on Tuesday, and skipping today would just make him think she was even more immature.

She quickly touched up her makeup before heading out of the girls’ bathroom and across the hall to English 12.

Max’s head looked up the second Liz walked into the classroom but Liz was determined not to look at him. She was just too confused right now.

Did he really mean it at the party when he had almost kissed her for real…and kissed her on the forehead? Or was it just sort of a brotherly act??

Sitting down at her seat she snuck a glance up at Max, who was looking at her with a quizzical look on his face. She let out a breath and looked over at Alex.

“You ok Liz?” He asked quietly. Liz nodded, pulling a piece of stray hair behind her ear before turning forward for class once the bell rang.

“Happy Monday everybody, I know, go ahead moan, I know nobody likes Monday,” Max said, chuckling as a moan escaped from half of the class, “Today Mrs. MacLean just gave me a few book assignments for you, and then you’re free for the rest of the hour, I’ll write them up on the board and you can get started.”

5 minutes later the entire room was silent as they hurried to get their work done so they could goof off for the rest of class. Liz struggled to stay awake during the assignment, but it was hard.

She had only managed to get about 2 hours of sleep last night due to all her homework, and worrying about what would happen 6th hour of today.
Her eyelids slowly started to droop and the next thing she knew someone was shaking her shoulder.

“Hmm, I’m awake Alex I’m awake,” she mumbled quickly, scribbling something down on her paper before looking over to Alex. He just raised his eyebrows and pointed to someone behind her.

“You ok Liz? You haven’t fallen asleep once in my class, that’s a record for most of the people in here,” Max said, smiling. Liz let out a quick smile.

“Um, I’m sorry, I just didn’t get a lot of sleep last night, I had a lot of homework, plus I was working on my college admissions essay,” Liz explained quietly. As much as she wanted to be angry or bitter towards Max for messing with her mind, it was hard to be angry towards him to his face, his beautiful eyes staring back down at her…it was near impossible.

“Ok, I was just making sure,” Max said, giving another small smile and…something else…something she couldn’t quite decipher, before heading back to his seat.

For the rest of class Liz silently worked on her work, stopping here or there revolted to wipe a small pool of drool from where she was sleeping, off of her notebook.

“What are you going to do today Liz?” Alex asked a moment before the bell was supposed to ring, referring to her staying behind as usual, or just going home.

The bell rang and Liz hesitated for a second, thinking about what Alex had asked her before gathering her things and heading for the door instead of walking straight to Max’s desk.

“Liz, wait! Could I talk to you for a moment please? It’ll only be a moment,” Max said in his teacher voice, because there were still a few students in the classroom. Liz thought about it for a second before slowly nodding her head and standing in place, gesturing to Alex to go, she’d be alright.

As the last person left Max shut the door behind her and turned to face Liz, “Look I’m sorry…”

They both said this at the same time and Liz giggled awkwardly before Max continued, “I’m sorry Liz…I know I probably shouldn’t be acting the way I am right now…but I shouldn’t be doing a lot of things right now also, like I probably shouldn’t have feelings for you, but I do and I can’t help it!”

Without any warning at all Max walked straight up to her, placing his hand on the back of her head as his lips came in contact with hers for the first time.

Liz was so shocked at first she just stared wide eyed ahead as Max continued the kiss. It was so tender and soft, yet there was fierceness in it, like all of his frustrations were being released in this single kiss.

Finally coming to her senses Liz closed her eyes and wrapped her arms around Max’s neck, allowing herself to get lost in this kiss, not knowing when she would get to kiss him again.

“Wait, wait…this is wrong…you could get in so much trouble for this Mr. Evans! So could I!!” Liz exclaimed, breaking apart from him a moment later, and noticing the crestfallen look on his face when she did so.

“I know Liz…I know, but really, I don’t care about getting fired, this is a substituting job,” Max said, joking slightly.

“This isn’t time for joking Max! What about me? Should I throw away my entire future just because I might happen to maybe like you?” Liz asked.

She was such a hypocrite right now. Just a week ago she had gone out to buy all new clothes to try to do just what she had been doing 2 seconds ago…and now she was pushing him away when she had him in her grasp?

“Of course I care about your future! But I also care about the fact that we both feel for each other…” Max said in a hushed tone.

“Max, I….I have to think ok…I just have to think about everything, but please…in the meanwhile, I’m your student…leave it there,” Liz said in a near whisper, barely believing her own words.

Max still looked crestfallen but he nodded and walked her over to the door, opening it for her so she could get out.

“I’ll see you in class tomorrow then Liz,” he said, giving her a small smile despite what had just happened.

“Yeah, I guess you will,” she replied, her head down as she walked out.

~*~

“I just don’t know what to do Alex I’m so confused right now,” Liz sobbed into the phone later that night.

“Hold tight Liz, I’m going to come over, ok?” Alex replied, his voice concerned. This was exactly what he didn’t want to happen, and now he was worried that Liz was going to do something outrageous like she often tended to do when she was upset.

10 minutes later he was knocking on her door and walking in at the same time, “Liz you ok?” he asked, sitting down next to her and lightly rubbing her back, knowing it would calm her down.

“I’ll be ok…I’m not upset really, well I am, but I guess I’m confused. I mean here I am practically throwing myself at him, and then I’m the one who tells him to stop, Alex just, what should I do?” Liz asked, hugging her pillow tight.

“I don’t know Liz. I’m afraid you’ll have to figure this one out for yourself,” Alex quietly replied, staring off into space as his mind thought about what was happening.

Liz sniffed her nose and took a deep breath before smiling over at Alex and closing her eyes, originally just intending to think for a minute, but in the end falling asleep.

Alex smiled at her and put a blanket over her before silently walking over to the door and exiting the room.

The next morning Liz woke up to the obnoxious buzzing of her alarm clock, yelling at her to get up like it always did. She reached out and pressed the off button, slowly pulling back the covers so she could get up.

She dreamed about the different outcomes all night last night, thinking about what would or could happen if she decided to follow her heart and be with Max, and then thinking about how much more sense it made not to be with him, to be safe.

She absentmindedly hopped in the shower and quickly blow dried her hair, not bothering to style it any further. She did up her makeup next, putting on her usual eyeliner, mascara and lip gloss, and then finally slipping into a white corduroy skirt and a red long sleeve shirt.

With one last glance at herself Liz quickly grabbed her purse and headed out the door for school, her mind finally made up.

Chapter 6

“Liz! I have to tell you something!” Alex exclaimed, running up to her in the hallway just before 1st hour.

“What is it?” Liz replied, turning around and facing him. He opened his mouth to tell her what is was, but then at that second Mr. Seligman walked up to Liz, looking anxious.

“Ms. Parker, I need you to come with me, I need your help with something,” he said quickly.

“Ok Mr. Seligman, Alex, I’ll talk to you later ok?” Liz said, walking away with her teacher and leaving a very frustrated Alex behind.

He knew Liz would flip when she found out what he had found out, he knew that as a fact, but now it seemed like she would have to find out herself.

Liz didn’t have a chance to see Alex again before 6th hour, so she was still curious as to what he wanted to tell her. She quickly dodged into the bathroom before 6th hour started and fixed her hair and makeup before heading across the hall and into her English class, her mind made up 100% on what she was going to do.

She took a deep breath before walking into the classroom, nearly dropping her books at what she saw inside.

There, sitting at the desk, was Mrs. MacLean….not Max. Liz stared blankly ahead as she sat down next to Alex…this must’ve been what he was trying to tell her earlier!

“Hello everybody! I bet you’re all surprised to see me back so soon, and to tell you the truth, I’m surprised as well. It turns out my back wasn’t as messed up as they thought it was…so the doctor’s said it would be fine to come back early,” Mrs. MacLean said, getting up slowly as the late bell rang.

Liz heard what she was saying, but she didn’t really take it in. Her mind was only concentrated on one thing….she blew it.

She blew the chance to be with Max. It was her fault that they weren’t together right now. She hadn’t even given a thought to the fact that he could leave any day…especially today!

She had walked into this classroom today intent on staying after school and telling Max she was willing to take the risk, she was willing to do anything to be with him…and now it looked like that chance would never come.

~*~

Liz graduated 7 months later, in June, class valedictorian. She had achieved all she ever wanted, including getting accepted into Harvard early, but yet in the back of her mind she always knew there was something missing.

She was pretty sure that something was Max.

She had never forgotten that kiss they shared in her English classroom last November. She had also never forgiven herself for turning him away that day.

Now as she made her way across the country to Harvard in the convertible her parents had given her as a graduation present, Max was all she could think about.

After nearly a week of driving, Liz finally arrived in Massachusetts, she finally arrived at Harvard, and yet, though this was what she had always wanted…it wasn’t as sweet as she thought it would be to look upon the building.

A wave of nostalgia didn’t flood over her as she thought it would. Now that she was here it was just…a building.

She had given up the love of her life for an ivy covered building.

Liz sighed as she grabbed her suitcases and hauled them into the building where she’d be assigned everything, her classes, dorm room, etc.

“Hi, um, Liz Parker, I’m a freshman,” Liz told the guy behind the desk. There were barely any people here yet, seeing how the semester started in about 3 weeks.

“Ok, here is your schedule, class requirements, dorm room and key, a map, and you activities packet, hope you like Harvard!” He said, handing her a large folder.

“Thank you very much,” Liz replied, stuffing the folder under her arm and making her way to her dorm room, “146…146….aha!”

She took out her key and unlocked the door, pushing it open with her back as she made her way inside.

It was a completely barren double room. Great, she was going to have to share with somebody…she just hoped it wasn’t some lunatic. She sighed and set down her things on the floor, plopping down on the bed and staring at the ceiling.

“Ok I’m here…now what the heck do I do for the last 3 weeks?” Liz asked herself, her face taking on a look of frustration.

“You could always take a tour of the campus,” a random female voice said, causing Liz to jump at least 5 feet off her bed in surprise.

“Oh my…I didn’t hear you…are you my roomie?” Liz asked, sitting up on the bed.

“Yeah, Serena O’Leary,” the tall red head said kindly, extending her hand as she walked over to Liz.

“Liz Parker,” Liz replied, smiling and shaking her hand, “So there isn’t anything better to do than check out the campus? It’s 8:00 on a Friday night.”

“Aha, I knew you were my type of girl, I just wanted to make sure you were all right with the whole having fun thing,” Serena replied laughing, “There’s actually a club nearby where a lot of the Harvard kids like to hang, I’m on my way to meet a few friends there, care to join?”

“I’d love to,” Liz said, grabbing her purse and following Serena out to her car. A couple of minutes later they arrived at the club, which was pretty packed if the amount of cars in the parking lot specified anything.

“Ok, you ready to enter the lion’s den?” Serena asked. Liz stared at her wide eyed for a second until she caught on that she was joking, shaking her head and smiling at her, “Most of these people don’t know who anyone is, so you’ll have a chance to get to know a few people, hook up with a few hot guys,” Serena said, nudging her with her elbow.

Liz laughed and followed her inside. It was like a typical club should be, loud dark and it smelled like smoke.

Liz has never particularly been fond of clubs, but she decided that maybe she’d try it again for a night; she had nothing to lose right?

“Ok, I’m going to let you sorta mingle with everyone, I’ll be back to check on you in a few k?” Serena said loudly, over the music.

“Ok,” Liz replied, nearly having to scream to be heard. She made her way to the bar and sat down; trying to drown out the pulsing music that completely took over the club, “Hi! I’d like a Smirnoff Ice,” Liz said to the bartender loud enough so he could hear. He nodded and a second later placed one down in front of her, taking her money.

She chugged it down quickly before heading out to the dance floor, she might as well have fun.

She randomly walked up to a guy and started dancing with him as the music played in the background. She didn’t even know what he looked like, she just wanted to dance.

Someone reached out and pulled her over to him and she started to grind with him as well until she looked up, seeing who it was.

“Oh my god Mr. Evans??” Liz exclaimed, backing up in shock.

“Liz please, it’s Max,” Max replied, his eyes staring straight into hers.

“We need to talk, outside, now,” Liz said, making her way through the crowd and to the exit, telling Serena she was leaving when she saw her on her way there. Once outside the club Liz turned around and faced Max, preparing herself to yell at him, but before she got a chance he was pinning her against the building and kissing her intensely.

“God Liz I missed you so much, I’m sorry I didn’t tell you that I was leaving myself, the second I found out Mrs. McLean was coming back Harvard called and offered me a TA position in a law class,” Max mumbled in between kissing her.

“Wait, you’re going to be a lawyer now?” Liz asked as he kissed along her jaw line.

“No, but I’m minoring in law, I’m going to finish my teaching courses so that I can teach full time,” Max replied, pulling away momentarily. Liz smiled and looked up at him.

“Max…the day that you left, I was going to tell you that I wanted to be with you, no matter what, and now we can Max! I’m 18, you’re not my teacher, there’s nothing stopping us!” Liz exclaimed, her face lit up with joy.

Max backed up a bit, looking at the ground uncomfortably, “Liz, when I saw you in there…it was like a miracle, seeing you again, you are so beautiful Liz…but there’s a problem…we can’t be together Liz. While I was away I, well I got engaged, I think I love her Liz,” Max said, bringing his hands up to his face.

“Wait…WAIT! What the…..what the fuck did all that just mean then? The “oh Liz I missed you so much”, and oh my god, you just made out with me!” Liz exclaimed, truly enraged now. Max didn’t reply, he just looked at the ground, digging his toe into the dirt as an awkward silence formed.

“I’m sorry Liz, I couldn’t help it, I still really care for you, I just, well I mean she’s closer to my age and…” Max started.

“And she’s prettier and smarter and has more money, the list probably never ends,” Liz said bitterly, crossing her arms over her chest.

“I did not say that Liz, don’t put words in my mouth,” Max said, “I have to get going, Tess is waiting inside.”

“Oh. Ok, well maybe I’ll see you around, maybe I won’t. Bye Max,” Liz said, turning around and walking over to the curb, hailing a taxi and quickly getting inside, waiting until after it started driving back to her dorm to let the tears fall.

Chapter 7

“Liz, you have to come out of this dorm room SOME time you know,” Serena told her a week later. All week Liz had stayed cooped up in the dorm room, watching tear jerkers and eating take out.

“Sereennnaaaa, I’m fine, promise,” Liz said, pouting and stuffing her face in the pillow.

“No you’re not. Get up, get dressed, we’re getting manicures, c’mon,” Serena said, throwing some clothes on top of Liz, who just groaned.

“Fine, but you have to buy me a chocolate shake afterwards,” Liz said, throwing her clothes on quickly before following Serena out to her car, where they proceeded to drive to the mall to the manicure place.

An hour later they walked out both sporting new French manicures, “Ok, so you promised me a shake, let’s go to the food court, they have a dairy queen,” Liz said, linking her arm with Serena and dragging her to the food court.

“This place is so nasty Liz, I don’t know how you eat this and still remain stick thin, I envy you Parker,” Serena said, forking over 3 dollars so Liz could buy herself a shake.

Liz laughed and paid for the shake as the lady handed it to her, “Let’s get out of here, I need to read that chapter for class,” Liz said, taking a long sip of her chocolate milkshake.

“Hey…isn’t that the son of a bitch who like put you in your depressed state?” Serena asked in a hushed voice, pulling Liz over into a corner and poking her head out so she could see.

Liz poked her head out as well and almost wished she hadn’t. There not 20 feet away was Max, standing with his arm around a gorgeous blonde model look-alike.

“Ugh, yes, that’s Max,” Liz groaned, banging her head against the wall.
They couldn’t move from this spot or he was sure to see them, “what are we gonna do?”

“You aren’t going to do anything, I’ll be right back,” Serena said, flipping her hair over her shoulder and sauntering over to Max, “Hey baby, I had a really good time at the club last week, but I have to tell you, if you EVER fuck around with my friend’s mind like that AGAIN I’ll skin your ass from head to toe, you got me?” Liz heard Serena say.

“Shit!” Liz gasped under her breath, banging her head against the wall a couple more times, earning herself a strange look from an 8 year old standing nearby. She glared at him and he quickly walked away, probably off to tell his mommy about the crazy lady hitting her head on the wall.

“Um, excuse me?” This came from the girl next to Max, obviously Tess.

“You heard me Barbie, tell your fiancé here to leave my friend alone, or I’ll fucking scalp him, and trust me honey, you do NOT wanna mess with me, just ask my friend, hey get out here Parker!” Serena exclaimed, looking over to Liz’s corner, Max and Tess’ eyes soon following.

Liz ducked back before they could really see her and started running down the small hallway behind her, quickly walking out the sign that read EXIT. She didn’t know why she didn’t just think about doing this before.
The door opened next to her and Liz sighed, thinking it was Serena, “Serena I’m going to fucking KILL you for that you evil minx!” Liz exclaimed, turning around to look at her, but instead seeing Max standing there looking partially confused.

“So you didn’t put her up to it?” he asked, leaning against the door and crossing his arms.

“No way! That’s why I fled,” Liz said, standing stiffly in front of him, “I was actually on my way out I just needed to get a milkshake so yeah, bye.”

“Liz, please just hear me out,” Max said, his voice exasperated.

“Why should I? Why should I have to listen anymore? I know you “think” you’re in love with your fiancé, who is gorgeous by the way, I know we were never meant to be, and I know I’m a fool for even still being here! I mean you practically cheated on your fiancé last night, so how would I know you wouldn’t do that to me huh?” Liz exclaimed, taking a long sip of her milkshake when she was done talking.

“I don’t have an excuse for anything I did…I’m not stupid enough to try and make one up, nothing can justify what I did to you, to her…but Liz, please try to understand. As soon as I got here my parents were pressuring me to get married, start a family, and there was Tess, she came from a good family, model student, she just seemed to be the perfect choice.

Now that I think on it though, I’m not so sure. I think that I acted too rashly, I mean we’ve only been with each other about 6 months and she’s already acting like we’re married and have been for like 20 years, it’s overbearing,” Max sighed, running a hand through his hair.

“Well maybe you should have thought about all of this BEFORE you proposed to her!” Liz gritted out, “Now, I’m leaving. I’ll see you, no wait, I won’t see you later, goodbye Max. I loved you, I really loved you, but now I see that I was a fool. You broke my heart once, and I was about to forgive you for that and let you in my heart again…and then you go and break my heart twice. There’s no 3rd chance for you Max,” Liz finished in a whisper, her eyes welling up with tears as she finished her sentence.

Max bowed his head as she walked past him and out to the parking lot, where Serena was waiting in the car.

“Are you alright?” she asked when Liz got in.

“Just…take me home,” Liz sniffed, leaning her head back. As they drove out of the parking lot she saw Max one last time, standing in the same place, his eyes following their car.

“What was your PROBLEM back there?” Liz exclaimed in the middle of their car trip back, obviously not being able to hold it back any longer.

“I’m sorry Liz, but I had to stick up for you, I can’t let him trample all over you Liz! I’m sorry that I went a little overboard, but I’m not sorry for telling him and that bitch fiancé of his off!” Serena exclaimed, hitting her hand on the steering wheel for effect.

“I know, and thanks for helping me out Rena, but you went too far…could you just try not to get that personal next time? I mean calling me out there??” Liz said, sighing, “He probably hates me now…when I should be the one hating him, I mean he broke my heart twice, and I still want him more than ever.”

“Liz, I’m not going to tell you what to do, but I think it’s in your best interest to just stay clear of him. You were much happier in those…what 10 minutes I first knew you when you didn’t have to think of Max, then in all the time after you saw him again Liz,” Serena said, giggling at the end as she pulled in front of the dorms.

“You know what? You’re right, fuck him. I’m just going to do my own thing from now on, he can just….whatever! I don’t even care what he does! I’m over him completely!” Liz exclaimed, getting out of the car.

“I’m glad! Now, are you going to be alright alone? I have to go run some errands,” Serena said, rolling down the window so she could talk to Liz.

“I’ll be fine, see you later,” Liz said, waiting until the car left the parking lot to go back inside.

Chapter 8

“Surprise!”

“Oh my god Alex!” Liz exclaimed, running up to him and engulfing him in a bear hug, “I can’t believe you came all the way out here to see me!”

“Well I heard you were in distress, so I had to come, you’re my best friend Lizzie, I have to protect you, you know,” Alex said, chuckling.

“Listen to you, you sound like a shrink already,” Liz joked, teasing him about the fact that no matter what he did he would be a shrink like his father one day.

“I sounded NOTHING like a shrink there, I wasn’t even giving advice!” Alex exclaimed, frowning.

“But your voice was all soothing like a shrink’s,” Liz said, smirking.

“Talk to the hand girlfriend…talk to the hand,” Alex said, sticking his hand out like they used to do when they were younger, “Let’s get out of here, go catch a movie or something.”

“Actually, I was just out, rain check? We could always just watch some movies in here Lex,” Liz said, plopping herself down on her bed.

“Oh my god, Liz turning down an outing?? What happened while you were out?” Alex asked, sitting down next to her on the bed.

“Nothing…I just sorta saw Max with his fiancé….and I just sorta promised Serena that I didn’t care what he did anymore but I was sorta lying…and I don’t know what to do now Alex, I mean he said he got engaged because his parents wanted him to…that’s just sort of a bad excuse in my opinion,” Liz sighed, leaning her head against the wall.

“Liz I don’t know what to tell you, I mean I really don’t know what you’re going through right now. I wish I could help, but I can’t, I’m sorry Liz,” Alex said in an apologetic tone.

“It’s ok Alex, I’m not being fair, I can’t expect you to solve all of my problems,” Liz said, smiling.

“I may not be able to solve your problems…but I think I can help make them a heck of a lot easier,” Alex mused a few minutes as they sat watching Steel Magnolias, “I want you to meet up with Max, go out to a club, have fun. Try it like that, and see if you can keep it at really good friends…give him a chance to make up for everything that he has done.”

“Do you really think that that is a good idea?” Liz asked, moving her head so she could look over at him.

“I really think it is Liz. You can’t get anywhere loathing him, and not forgiving him. I really think he deserves a second chance, he’s a good guy Liz…maybe a very messed up good guy, but he’s a good guy…I’m pretty sure about that. I think he may rely on his parent’s opinion to much from what you told me, that is fixable though, you are only young once, take advantage of your youth while you still can,” Alex said.

“Shrink shrink shrink!” Liz exclaimed, giggling as she poked Alex, “But you know what…I like you as Alex the Shrink, you’re smarter like this. How about I call him up in an hour, after I’ve spent some time with you, and then we’ll see what happens from there?”

“That sounds great, except the whole you calling me a shrink thing…that has to stop Lizzie, unless you want me to start calling you…uh…Eliza Thornberry or something,” Alex said in reply.

“Eh…I hate that show. I’ll try to stop Lex, but I mean try, I’m not very good at that,” Liz giggled, giving him a grin before plopping down on her stomach and unpausing the movie.

An hour later Alex left, promising that he’d come back tomorrow morning so they could spend the day together before he headed back to the west coast to go to UCLA.

Liz reached for her phonebook and leafed through the pages until she found the number for Evans, Max. She hesitantly dialed each number into the phone, pressing it tight against her ear as she waited for him to pick up.

“Hello?” His voice flooded her ears. She almost hung up there but instead took a deep breath, “Hello??”

“Um yeah sorry…this is Liz…” Liz said quickly, “Um…well, I was sort of thinking earlier and, uhm this could be a really big mistake but, I was wondering if maybe you wanted to go out tonight, as friends…strictly friends…maybe go bowling? I just want to give you a chance to redeem yourself, see if we can be friends Max.”

Max was silent for a moment and Liz took this as a bad sign, “Um, you know that was a really stupid idea, I mean yeah, bye Max.”

“Wait, I like it, so I’ll pick you up at your dorm room at about, 8 or so? There’s an excellent bowling alley a few miles away that we could go to,” Max said just before Liz was about to hang up.

“Ok, that sounds good…see you then Max,” Liz said quietly before hanging up and burying her face in her hands. Alex BETTER be right about this idea or she was never going to forgive him.

She changed into a pair of corduroys and a plain red t-shirt, pulling her hair away from her face and slipping her feet in her favorite pair of Reebok’s.

“Hi,” Liz said awkwardly when Max knocked on her door at 8:00 exactly.

“You ready?” Max asked, stuffing his hands in his pockets.

“Yeah just let me get my purse,” Liz said briefly, dodging back into the apartment to her get her little black purse, “Let’s get going then.”

“Listen Liz…I really don’t want this to be awkward between us, so let me just say, I fucked up ok, and I know that. I know I am the biggest asshole in the world right now, and you have no reason at all to even be giving me this chance to know you, so I just wanted to thank you,” Max said when they were on their way to the bowling alley, the car filled with silence until Max spoke up.

“You didn’t have to tell me things that I already knew, but thanks anyways. I’m no where near close forgiving you yet, but that maybe helped a little,” Liz said, letting a flicker of a smile cross her face before setting her face back to emotionless.

They arrived at the bowling alley a minute later and Max got out of the car, walking around to help Liz out before she could reach for the handle.

“Hi, 2 games each, plus shoes,” Max said when they walked inside.

“Let me pay for the shoes,” Liz insisted, handing him a ten. This wasn’t a date, and she didn’t want him paying for everything like it was one when she was the one who suggested it in the first place.

The man behind the counter handed them each a pair of bowling shoes in their size and told them they’d be in alley 28.

“I’ve always hated these shoes, they’re weird,” Liz said, sliding around on the floor while she waited for Max to finish putting his on.

“So, are you ready to lose?” Max asked, picking up a blue bowling ball from the rack.

“Don’t you mean are YOU ready to lose?” Liz asked, cocking her eyebrow at Max. He grinned and walked up, getting himself ready.

Liz snuck up behind him right as he was about to bowl his ball and tickled his sides, causing him to let go early, and causing the ball to go into the gutter.

“Hey! That’s not fair!” Max said, turning around and grabbing her by the wrists, wrestling her down and tickling her stomach as well.

“Stop! Stop! I promise I’ll be nice!” Liz gasped in-between fits of laughter. Max smiled and let go, going over to retrieve his ball for his second bowl.

By the end of the game Liz had lost, by a lot, both times, “Max you cheated it isn’t fair!” Liz whined, pouting.

“I did not cheat! You cheated if anyone did,” Max grinned, returning the bowling shoes and opening the door for Liz on their way out.

She rolled her eyes and walked past him into the brisk air as they made their way back to his car.

“Thanks for giving me this opportunity Liz…I really appreciate it,” Max said, standing outside his car.

“It’s no problem Max, we should do this again, except not go bowling…maybe like ice skating or something next time,” Liz said, hugging her arms.

“That sounds good,” Max replied, smiling as they got into the car and took off towards the dorms.

“Are you still living in the dorms?” Liz asked when they pulled up at the dorms.

“No, I have an apartment in town,” Max replied, stuffing his hands in his pockets, “do you want me to walk you up to your dorm?”

Liz thought about it for a second before shrugging her shoulders, “Sure.” Max nodded and opened the door for her. They walked silently in and then upstairs to her dorm room on the 3rd floor.

“This is it,” Liz said awkwardly, bouncing on the heels of her feet as they stood in front of her room.

“Yup,” Max said quietly. Somehow they gravitated towards each other and before she knew it, Liz was softly kissing Max on the lips, her hands on his chest.

Max pulled back after a second and blushed, “I’m sorry, I shouldn’t have done that…goodbye Max…” Liz whispered, turning her back to Max and taking her key out of her purse, opening the door.

She walked in and shut it behind her with one last smile to him. She sighed once she was on the other side and threw her purse down on her bed, pulling off her shirt and pants and throwing them into her laundry pile.

There was a note from Serena on the desk saying that she would be spending the night at her parent’s house, so Liz didn’t have to worry about her coming back until tomorrow.

A quick rapping at her door startled her and she walked over to the door, quickly wrapping a blanket around herself before cracking the door open a little, her eyes widening when she saw who it was.

“What are you doing back?” Liz asked, but Max didn’t answer, he simply stepped forward and captured her lips with his. He pushed the door open with his leg and stumbled into her room, shutting it behind him with his foot and wrapping his arms around Liz’s waist as he kissed her.

The blanket fell from Liz’s body as she reached up and wrapped her arms around Max’s neck. What they were doing was so wrong, he was engaged, she still hadn’t fully forgiven him for everything…but it felt so right.

A small whimper escaped from her mouth as he nipped her neck, leading her over to the bed. She didn’t know what it was about him, but for some reason he made her forget who she was or where she was when she was with him, and all she could think about right now was him.

Chapter 9

Liz’s heart was racing 1000 times faster than it usually did as Max kissed his way down her chest.

This is what she had wanted ever since she had first seen him in the 9th grade, to be with him, and now that she was finally getting that opportunity she felt luckier than she had in a long time.

She moaned as he hit a particularly sensitive spot on her neck and reached her hands out, pulling his shirt out of his pants and moving her hands up underneath it, massaging his rock hard chest and abs.

It was soon off of his glorious body and discarded carelessly onto the floor, followed momentarily by his pants, leaving him in only his blue plaid boxers and her in her bra and panties.

They were reacting on pure passion by now, passion and urgency fueled them. Liz captured his face with her hands and kissed him breathless, her tongue snaking into his mouth as his hands wandered to her back, unhooking her bra with a flick of his wrist.

Liz groaned as her breasts were exposed to the chilly air, hardening immediately. Max continued to kiss her fiercely while his large hands went to work on her pert breasts.

“Oh Max…oh” she moaned as he broke his mouth away from hers, latching it onto her right breast and sucking until her nipple was rock hard and she was writhing underneath him.

He continued his ministrations on her other breast, treating it the same and pulling back only when her other nipple was rock hard as well.

Liz sat up, strattling his waist as she pushed him down onto the bed, grinding her pelvis against his and watching with satisfaction as his breath hitched and a low moan escaped his mouth, his eyelids fluttering shut.

“Like that?” she whispered seductively, nibbling on his ear as she did it some more.

“Fuck yeah,” he replied hoarsely, kissing her ferociously before flipping them back over with one swift movement, “God Liz you wreck havoc on my body.”

“Oh really, I couldn’t tell,” Liz replied, grinning as she ran her hands down his chest and to the tent in his boxers.

“Really, we’ll have to fix that then,” Max said, scraping his teeth against the sensitive flesh of her neck and leaving various marks there. He took her hand in his and guided it to his throbbing cock.

Liz groaned when she felt how hard he was, and how big he was. All she could think about right now was how he would feel buried deep inside her.

“We’ll have to do something about that now won’t we?” Liz purred, her fingers toying with the hem of his boxers before pulling them down completely. Her hand encircled him, stroking rapidly.

Max’s eyes rolled to the back of his head as the pleasure built up in his body, making his breathing even more rapid and his cock even firmer if possible.

“Oh God Liz let me fuck you,” Max groaned, reaching his hand down to her panties and pulling them down off of her.

Liz moaned as she felt the tip of his cock at her entrance and a shiver went shooting down her spine.

Before she could say anything Max was deep inside her, hissing as his cock sunk deeper into her tight, slick opening and nearly coming as he heard Liz moan erotically underneath him, her little body writhing and waiting for him to continue.

He looked up and into her eyes and leaned forward, kissing her, but this time the kiss was more heartfelt and passionate than before.

Breaking the kiss, he pulled halfway out of her before sinking himself deeper and faster into her, pulling her leg up and around his back for better leverage.

“Ahhh, fuck Max….yeahh,” Liz moaned breathily as Max continued to pound into her. She could feel her end about to near, but didn’t want to be done this quick so she leaned up and kissed Max.

“Max, let me ride you,” Liz whispered, kissing along his jaw. Max grinned and flipped over, moving Liz with him so that she was on top of him.

He leaned himself back against the wall and kissed her once more before helping her move onto him.

She was soon doing fine without his help though and she pounded up and down onto him the smacking sound of their naked skin turning her on even more, her head thrown back in ecstasy.

Max could’ve come at that very second she looked so erotic, her little body slamming down onto his cock.

“Ohhh, ohhh ohhhh Max!” She exclaimed as her walls constricted around him, causing him to lose control also, spilling into her as her juices coated his cock.

Liz collapsed into his arms, her body glistening with sweat, and breathing heavily but a goofy smile lighting her features as she recalled what had just happened.

“I love you Max,” she whispered, snuggling up close to him and planting a kiss on his chest, still connected with him. He wrapped his arms around her small body and kissed her forehead, stroking her silky hair until she finally fell asleep.

“I love you too Liz,” he mumbled to her sleeping body before letting himself drift off to sleep as well.

Liz woke up the next morning feeling more rested than she had in a long, long time. They had both woken up in the middle of the night and made love to each other 2 more times, but neither time as rushed as the first time, now they wanted to explore each others bodies, and boy did they explore.

Liz would never look at Max’s hands the same way again, she grinned, blushing as she thought about how he touched and loved her body last night. It hadn’t been her first time, that had been with Kyle Valenti and had been a mistake, but Max was so much more wonderful than Kyle was, and he made her feel totally different when she was with him.

“Morning gorgeous,” He whispered, capturing her lips in a breathtaking kiss that sent shivers down her spine.

“Morning to you too,” Liz giggled, burying her head back in the crook of his neck, just as his cell phone rang from the pocket in his discarded pants.

He rolled over and snatched it out of his pocket, placing it to his ear without looking at the caller ID, “Hello?” he asked, yawning soon after.

“Max? Where are you baby? You didn’t come home last night, I was worried,” Tess said, her voice laced with concern.

It was hard for Max to concentrate on who was on the phone because as soon as he sat up, Liz pressed her chest to his back, still naked, and wrapped her arms around his chest, running her hands up and down it, causing a very big distraction.

“I had to take care of some school stuff, and I ended up crashing at a friend’s dorm on campus, I’m sorry I didn’t call you,” Max said, trying his best to keep his voice even.

He could practically hear Tess frown on the other end of the line as his breath hitched halfway through the sentence, “…Ok, when can I expect you back?” she asked.

“In about half an hour…I’ll see you then Tess,” Max replied, immediately sensing Liz’s body tense.

“Ok, bye, I love you Max,” Tess purred into the phone.

He had to do it…he had to tell her he loved her too…they did it every time they ended a phone conversation and she would wonder if something was up if he didn’t, “Love you too, bye,” he said quickly, pressing the ‘end’ button on his cell phone once he pulled it from his ear.

He turned around to look at Liz, but found that she was laying back down in bed, her back to him. He sighed and lay down next to her, pulling her snugly against him and turning her around so that her head lay on his chest.

Max sighed and stroked her hair as she lay nestled against him, “You know that I don’t want to go right? I’d rather stay here with you forever,” Max murmured, smiling affectionately down at Liz.

“I know…I know…” Liz sighed, closing her eyes. A single tear fell down her cheek and onto his chest, alarming him.

“Hey…what’s the matter Liz?” he asked softly, pivoting her chin so that she could look at him.

“I just….you have to go back to her after this Max…you’re engaged to be married to her, and here I am. What am I supposed to do? Be your mistress for the rest of your life while your wife is at home raising the children?” Liz asked, trying to sound harsh, but her voice betraying her and exposing how confused and hurt she was instead.

“No…I plan on taking care of things with Tess…it’s time she knew the truth Liz, and it’s time I gave you’re the respect and love you deserve,” Max whispered, kissing the tip of her nose before sitting up and reaching for his clothes.

Liz sighed and came up behind him, kissing his shoulder, “Promise you’ll come back?”

“Oh Liz trust me, if I’m not back by 10:00 tonight, I’m dead in a ditch, I’ll be back Liz,” Max said, turning around and kissing her, almost losing control.

“Wait…we can’t, Serena will be back,” Liz said, pouting. Max frowned and ran a hand through his shaggy hair.

“I’ll call you later and let you know what we should do, but until then, get your rest, make yourself even more beautiful than you are now, and meet me at Chez Richard’s at 8:00 tonight,” Max said, nuzzling his nose into her neck.

“Ok Max,” Liz replied, kissing him one last time before ushering him out of the dorm, shutting the door and locking it behind him, “Oh god I really just did that,” she told herself, a huge smile on her face.

She was glowing and anyone who saw her could tell that, including Serena when she came back an hour later.

“You’re different…something happened, dish,” Serena said, giving Liz a suspicious look.

“Nothing, really…now I have to go bye!” Liz said quickly, dodging out of the dorm room before Serena had time to question her anymore.

She had to find a dress to wear tonight.
