She gives an adorable little laugh. One that could probably solve all the worls problems if they listened.
"Michael isn't all that bad." she says with that incredible smile
"But, you're right. I usually do alright. But lately..."
She shakes her head. Oh no... is she ok?

"It's not as easy as it used to be. Studying, working, classes, paying bills... it's not always as easy as it used to seem like it would be. I must sound really boring."
I give her a concerned look. God I hope she's ok.

"I'm sorry, I shouldn't have... it's not your problem and I really shouldn't be complaining..."
She sighs,
"I should get back to work..."

Say something! Quickly.
I look around. Oh no...brother strange is here. No wonder she was looking over my shoulder. Be just my luck she likes my brother. Please don't tell me he reciprocates, cos then I might as well curl up and die.
And I see him wink at her.

Oh no. I'm not letting my misguided brother hussle in this time. He knows I like her! How dare he! Thats it. I have to do something about this right now. Alex was right. I need to step up.

"Is there anything I can do?" I ask gently. "Maybe...maybe you should have some fun or something...you know...take away some stress? Perhaps I could...take you to the pictures sometime...if you want to..."

I can not believe I just did that. You prize idiot! You know she likes your brother! I look at the table and mutter "Forget it...I...I'm gonna go...."
I quickly get up from the table.

"Thanks...for the burger...."
I quickly walk out of the crashdown giving my brother a hurt and disgusted look as I pass him. I go outside and jump in the jeep. I don't start the engine as I don't think driving right this second would be wise. I'd only get in such a stress I'd crash.

God help me, what did I do!

“That’s a completely different thing you know, though you made the smart choice there man. Look if you like Maria and she likes you then there is nothing wrong with going out with her, I’m not blind I seen the two of you blatantly flirting. Don’t do that in front of me ever again by the way!”

Erp. Oops. I give him a sheepish look.

“It’s just that I know your track record with women. But I can trust you not to do anything like that with her right?”

Im about to open my mouth, even though I don't know what to tell him. I mean...can he trust me? Can I trust myself around a hottie like Maria DeLuca?

But Im saved by the bell by Maria and Zan. Of course my eyes watch Maria intensely. Hey, Im guy! You don't expect me to watch Zan do you?

"Oh Kyle! I have the best idea ever. You wanna hear it? I know you do. So I was thinking maybe we could have a quiet gathering of friends over tonight after closing. You know just the necessities, some food, nice conversation, and maybe a keg or two in the back.."

She maybe cute...but clearly she has not had experience trying to get her brother to have a party! Come on, a seventy year old would know thats what shes getting at.

“But Maria weren’t you just saying how you have too much to do as it is? And don’t you have a date tonight anyway? Dan or was it Stan? You know I really think you should take it easy your doing way to much.”

Oh yeah...her date. Bet he's a moron. I watch as Kyle smiles at her with the same smile Maria used. “I really don’t think your up for any... Quiet gatherings... tonight.”

"First off, I do have a date with Doug... but if I'm not mistaken and I rarely am... He told a bunch of his footballer buddies that he was planning on taking me up to Lover's Point to..."

Damn Doug. God...wouldn't we all love to be there instead of him...well except Kyle of course. And maybe Zan as there best friends...
Ok fine just me then!

" Uh... well the name is pretty self explainatory, but seeing as how I don't kick the gear shift on a first date I'll suggest we stay here. Please Kyle. Mom and Dad are gone and I've been a good girl for the past 16 years."

I laugh at that. Yeah right!

"Okay, relatively good anyway. Come on. You'll have a great time I promise. Some jamming music, lots of food, and just 20 or 30 people tops. Alright what is it gonna take to get you to agree to help me throw the biggest party of the year? What do you want? I'll do your chores for a month. Name your price. We'll negotiate."

She slides in next to me. Hmm...I could just kiss her lips right now...

"A party sounds like a fantastic idea," Zan chips in. "You gotta go for it, Kyle. A months worth of chores is a goldmine!"

"With your parents out of town, you'll never get a better opportunity."

I look between the siblings. "Well...personally I would have to go with lovely Ria on this one... but then again I do of course have to agree with Kyle as he's my best friend...."

I lean into Maria and cheekily whisper "Damn best friends..."

*Maria*

"A party sounds like a fantastic idea," Zan pipes in and I have to supress a whoot for joy. Yay for best friends! I need to remember to give him a cookie later. A big one. With sprinkles on top. "You gotta go for it, Kyle. A months worth of chores is a goldmine!" Thankful for my best buds encouragement I nod appreciatively at his reasoning."With your parents out of town, you'll never get a better opportunity." he concludes sounding fairly happy with the idea.

His gaze wanders over to Liz and I tilt my head to the side as if to figure out what he's thinking. That is until I see that cocky smirk. Oh! That's what he's thinking. Shaking my head as if to get that image out of my mind I turn to Rath who seems to have a rather interesting opinion on the matter. "Well...personally I would have to go with lovely Ria on this one... but then again I do of course have to agree with Kyle as he's my best friend...." he trails off ,but I'm still concentrated on the fact that he said I was lovely.

His mouth turns up in this sexy grin as he leans forward and whispers, "Damn best friends..." I smile and then turn away not sure of anything to say that wouldn't come out as a giddy giggle. My gaze goes back to Zan who seems to be undressing Liz with his eyes. Shifting even closer I put my hand on his shoulder as I draw him closer so the others won't hear my words, "Best friends are vastly over rated." I joke and then I flip my hair behind my shoulder in that flirty way that seems to drive the guys crazy. "Now friends with benefits thats something worthwhile to have." I state arching an perfectly shaped eyebrow at him.

"So Kyle..." I say while turning to my completely clueless if not adorable step brother. " Are we going to do this thing or should I call Doug and put him out of his misery early?" I question giving him a mischevious smile.

Alex

I watch Max and Liz talk,well at least that idiot best friend of mine is trying to make an effort and all of a sudden he jumps up mutters something to Liz...no doubt another 'thank you' and hurries out of the cafe.

On the way out he throws Zan a look of disgust and hatred...who'd say they were brothers...of course apart from the twins thing...they are as different as chalk and cheese.Now Zan has the confidence...that's what Max needs.

Since Maria seems busy with the her brother and the "cool dudes" of school and Liz is back at work I rush out after him.Just as he jumps in to the jeep I grab hold of his arm "Where do you think you are going Einstein?"

I look up at Alex. "Why did you make me do that huh! Why?! Now I just completely and utterly blew it! God I HATE my brother! He started winking at Liz the bastard! And he knows I like her! God!"

Im screwed. I daren't tell Alex what I then did but I know I have to. I take a deep breath and quickly say "SoIAskedHerIfSheWantedToGoToTheCinemaWithMe"

I groan and put my head on the steering wheel. "When I realise what I did I bolted. I mean she clearly likes Zan! Him and his stupid arse winking! Ergh!!!"

I hit my head hard on the steering wheel making the jeep honk noisely. But I don't give a damn. I never ever swear but right now I could shout all the explitives in the world at my evil brother Zan.

Alex

I let go of his arm and raise my eyebrows and watch him being a drama queen and then finally let him have it...

"So you're going to let Zan and his 'stupid arse winking'" I say making quotation marks in the air "win the girl you like?"

Before he can respond I carry on "Maxwell Evans,you need your head checked...you get your stupid arse back in to that cafe and go to Liz and ask her out nicely before Zan gets to her.We both know once that happens...you're out in the cold."

"Let her make up her mind...but let her have all the facts about you before she chooses Zan over you just 'coz you chose to be a fraidy cat and go after her.Are you scared of losing to your brother or what?" I ask him purposely,knowing that should kick him in to action

I shake my head at Isabel question, “Nope, I going to end to the car and I’ll meet you there, okay?”

She nods in answer and I smile, relieved that I don’t have to go into the girls changing rooms. Being around all those sports playing girls always makes me feel so lazy and puny.

“Right, I’ll see you by my car then,” I state before making my escape.

Heading away from the swimming pool and then out towards the parking lot, I feel a little sad. I love coming to school, its one of the only times that I’m not completely by myself. My parents are always so busy with work that they don’t get to spend too much time at home. Not that I mind too much. I understand how important their careers are and I do enjoy the life style I’m able to lead because of their money.

Unlocking the silver land rover that my parents bought me for my birthday, I sigh. I’m having second thoughts about heading to the Crashdown. I really should be working on my college applications. The sooner I get them in the better I’ll feel. I mean, slackers do not get to attend Harvard.

Isabel

Entering the lockeroom I immediatly open my locker. I throw on a pair of jeans and a navy blue tanktop before heading out towards the car where Tess is waiting for me.

"Hey Tess" I greet her climbing into the passenger seat.

The crashdown is probally packed but its the only place that has semi-good food. I just hope I can talk Tess into staying.

I was talking to her and she was being flirted with by Zan! And Im not about to let you go and make me think that I can win this thing again like I just did and go all gung ho. I tried it. I blew it!" I rant.

I take a deep breath. "I am not going back in there Alex." I state.

*Zan*

"I don't know about that," I say as Rath starts complaining about 'best friends'. I put an arm around Maria's shoulders for a brief squeeze and a big grin. "I've been pretty lucky with mine."

I let my hand drop as Maria continues to argue with Kyle about the party and if they're having one. As far as I'm concerned, it's on. I'm going to be here and I'll bring my tunes and I'm not letting anyone talk me into leaving before I'm ready. Maybe I should start calling the rest of the band to be sure they're on hand, too.

I look up as Max leaps up and pratically flees from the Crashdown. What the hell scared him off? I wonder. With a shrug, I say to Maria - "Back in a bit."

I walk over to the table that Max had been at. Liz is standing up, looking confused. "Hey. Sorry about my brother. I don't know what's up with him lately. How are you doing?" I ask her.

Alex

"I am not going back in there Alex." he states stubbornly

I shrug and throw up my hands in mock disgust "Fine...if that's the way you want it.Be ready then to stomach the sight of the girl of your dreams on your brother's arm." I say before I start walking down the street

I think I will head home and take a nap before my evening swim.Max is useless.Here he has the chance of the girl he likes liking him back and he doesn't even want to make en effort.Fool!

Shoving my hands deep in to my jean pockets I trudge on down the street not looking where I am going.Instead my mind is on the swim meet next weekend.That ought to be a lot of fun.

May be I'll bump in to Melissa again...she was a really interesting and pretty girl,not to mention an awesome swimmer.Who cares if she is on the rival team?I chuckle to myself and get stares from some of the other pedestrians.

Oh dear god...she whispers something to him and then does the flip thing with her hair. You know what I mean. The thing that right now means Im swallowing hard. I thought they were best friends not anything more!!!
She whispers something else before looking back at Kyle. "I don't know about that, I've been pretty lucky with mine." Zan states wrapping an arm around her.

Ok...breathe..

"So Kyle... Are we going to do this thing or should I call Doug and put him out of his misery early?" Maria asks as Zan excuses himself and walks away to Liz. I dont know where Max has gone but there you go! I was probably paying too mcuh attention to Ria.

I smile at Kyle. "Come on now...you don't want disappoint your charming sister now do you? Besides, you know I have your best interest at heart man, and Im sure a gathering would improve your social status"

I smile as I know just how to sort this out. I whisper to Ria quietly "Go with me here"

"So Maria..." I say flicking my eyes up and down in her an obviously flirty manner, "Your feet must be tired, you've been running through my mind all day. How about you blow off...Drake? Darcy? Anyway whoever his name is and come to lovers point with me eh?" I wink at her with the eye that Kyle would see so he knew this was for his benefit. If he wants me to stop flirting, he'll have the party.
