Ruby, have fun wherever you are

Alex

After I got Isabel to promise me to behave - for now, I excuse myself and leave the table for a moment. Fishing my cell phone out of my pocked I quickly dial a number.

"Uh, hey. This is Alex Whitman from work, I hope I'm not bothering you. Great. I just wanted to ask if your offer for a movie date is still up, Ashley? ... It is? Great! How about tomorrow? Half past seven sounds great. Yeah, me too. Well, then, till tomorrow at work. Mhm, finalizing everything tomorrow sounds great. Yeah, you too. Bye."

See, Isabel isn't the only one who can get herself a date. Haha! Wow, I just laughed at myself, I really should be worried about myself.

I quickly walk back to the table, hoping that I didn't miss the waiter because I'm really hungry.

TESS

I watch as Kyle tries to formulate an intelligent answer to my question. And he almost does it, but he gets a little tongue-tied. I think he's not quite sure what to say about the underlying meaning of a gesture like this from Max towards Liz. And so he's trying not to hurt my feelings in any way. 'Kyle's so cute and considerate,' I think happily to myself, while chuckling quietly at his nervous answer.

"Don't worry, it's all good, I think it's a nice idea too. But I'm not much for thinking of the big picture either, so I getcha on that being too much planning stuff." I reply.

Kyle's face immediately relaxes and he smiles back at me.

"So, while we're on the subject of birthdays, have you ever been given a suprise birthday party?" I ask.

KYLE

I grin in relief when Tess isn't laughing or rolling her eyes at me.

"So, while we're on the subject of birthdays, have you ever been given a suprise birthday party?"

"No, my friends know and respect that I hate such nonsense." I say before realizing that this sounds really offensive against Liz surprise party. "I mean, surprise parties are nice, don't get me wrong. But I don't want one for myself for some reason. You ever had one?"

"Yes, I had a surprise 18th birthday party. I guess my friends found out I didn't have a sweet sixteen birthday, so they decided to throw one for me senior year of high school." I pause to take a drink of ice water the waiter had brought us. "It was pretty cool, I'd never had a surprise party thrown for me before."

"Why didn't you have a sweet sixteen party? I thought that was a big deal or something."

"Yeah, it's supposed to be one of those 'rites of passage' things, like the American version of the Mexican quinceñera... um, I don't know, birthdays aren't really a big fancy affair in my family. We always have ice cream cake and presents but it's just my family and the birthday person."

Sorry it's not better.

Max shrugs after he explains that what he did was not much. Not much? Just making sure that my family and friends would be here and at the restaurant. I don’t think anyone has ever given me a gift that was this big—this thoughtful, and I don’t even know if he knows how amazing this is. How could I ever thank him? Could I? Could I even get him to believe how great this gift was? It made my birthday.

“Max,” I say to get his attention. “This is incredible. Really. You got me my family and friends for my birthday.”

He shrugs again and his lips curve to form an expression that mirrors his posture. Maybe I’ll have to really talk to him without everyone else watching in order to make sure he knows how much this meant to me because he doesn’t seem to believe it.

It was fine, Sugarplum!

"Well, I'm glad you liked it," I tell Liz, not sure whatelse to say. "That's what counts." In fact, I think I would gladly do ten times this effort to see that smile again. The one she wore when she first realized her family was here for her.

I'm not really sure what to say after that. She already said she liked it. I'm not trying to make her say it again.

Fortunately, I'm saved when the waiter arrives with our food, carefully setting each order in front of the appropriate person.

"She didn't like it, you know," Kels says softly, nudging me under the table.

"Huh?" I ask, turning towards her.

"She loved it, and I think you know it." Then more loudly so that others can hear her, too, she asks. "Any more surprises from anyone?"

"Oh, there might be one or two," I admit, thinking of the presents that Isabel purchased on behalf of all of us. In fact, I see that there are already a few gifts on a small table near the wall. No doubt brought in by her friends and family. "Afterall, Liz still has to open those."

"And the alcohol!" Michael adds. "She can legally drink now. We gotta get her a beer."

"I think we can do better than beer, don't you, Alex?" I ask.

KYLE

"Sounds like a nice tradition to me." I comment after Tess tells me about her birthdays. Sounds really nice and relaxing too. "So I guess we don't have to get clowns and ponies for your birthday then?"

"Haha, no, you don't, you're saved from that task," I laugh at Kyle's joke. He really is a funny guy. "Besides I think I'm a little too old for ponies and clowns anyway, you know."

"Yeah, I guess so," he says with a wink and a grin.

Our food arrives and I gaze with hungry eyes at my steaming plate of food. Ooooh does it look good.

Max is commenting about the other presents that Liz still has to open and Michael interjects that now she's legal and should have a beer.

Max says that they should be able to do one better than beer, and before Alex can answer I throw in my two cents.

"Liz, you should try a daiquiri if you're going to have any alcohol. They're ok, good fruit flavor. That's what I had when I turned 21, although my friend drank most of it because I didn't like the taste of the alcohol in the drink."

ALEX

I grin when Liz looks from one person to the other as everyone comments on what kind of alcohol she should try first. "You know Parker, you can still drink coke if you want, we certainly don't want you to start drinking at the first chance you get." Then I add with a wink, "But if I were you, I'd start wit a Tom Collins."

Hey! Someone has to tell the girl about the good stuff!

"A Tom Collins? What a wussy," I snort. Was this the guy who got so drunk I had to cut my night short with a guy like this? I'd have thought Alex could drink more like a man. "Not that it would be a bad choice for Liz," I add hastily. It's a decent lady's drink.
