Hope everyone had a great holiday. I finally finished the next part and it is a bit of a transition part. Hopefully I'll gett the next part done by the end of next week.
Part 45
Michael put the dirty dishes in the sink.
“This was nice.” A voice from behind him said.
He turned around to find Liz bringing in some more dishes. The four of them had just finished dinner and were doing the cleanup.
“Working at the Crashdown actually paid off.”
Michael arched his eyebrows at her.
“Michael’s always had a knack for cooking.” Max said.
He walked over and gave her a peck on the cheek.
“Yeah, I’m sure Jose has no idea how to make fresh Marinara Sauce.” Michael added.
“Well maybe you should be in culinary school.” Liz said.
“Nah I enjoy cooking but I’ve had enough of it being my job.”
“So you have any idea what you want to do then?” Max asked.
Max had been slightly absorbed in his own life that he really didn’t know what was going on in his best friend’s life. He had enjoyed this night catching up with two of his closest friends.
“Actually I’ve been taking a few math and drawing classes and I think I might like to be an architect.”
“Uh, Michael you do realize that would require some Science and math classes right.”
Michael shrugged.
“Yeah but I pretty much think I’ve got that covered. In high school it wasn’t that I couldn’t do the work it was that I just didn’t see any need for it. I thought that I would be leaving, so why bother. Things have changed.”
Michael wiped his hands with the dish towel and threw it down on the counter.
“Besides if I need any help I live with miss science.” He said throwing Liz a smirk.
Liz smiled.
“Any help you need.”
“I knew it would eventually pay off to live with geeks.”
Liz picked up the dish-towel and threw it at him and laughed.
“Hey watch it that geek is my girlfriend.” Max said as he caught the dish-towel Michael had thrown back at Liz.
“Speaking of girlfriends where is my Fiancé?”
“Her mother called a few minutes ago.”
“Isn’t it kind of late?” Max asked.
“Not for those two they’re probably talking wedding plans, like what type of flowers and crap like that. It could be a while.”
“And this is just for her Mother’s wedding. They haven’t even started planning ours.”
The three of them walked back into the Living room and sat on the couch.
“When was the last time that the four of us just hung out with out their being an Alien or human crises.” Max asked.
“I think this is the first time actually.” Liz said.
“Think again.” Came Maria’s voice from the stairs.
She was pale and slightly shaking. Michael immediately ran to her and Max and Liz followed close behind.
“Maria what is it?” Michael asked.
Maria looked at him her green eyes shining with unshed tears. How was she going to tell him this?
“What’s wrong?” He asked again when she didn’t respond.
“Michael… It’s Kyle.” She began.
The minute Michael heard Kyle’s name he tensed up.
“He’s missing.” She finished quickly as she watched the emotions play out on his face.
“They found his car abandoned by the side of the road. The sheriff and my father went to go check the area out.”
“Your father?” Liz asked.
“Apparently, Kyle’s mother knew something was wrong and went to see Jim.”
“She had seen him earlier.” She said meeting Michael’s eyes.
“Damn it! I should have known.” Michael yelled.
“This is not your fault Michael.” Maria said placing her hand on his shoulder.
“I never should have let him go alone. God only knows how he reacted. I should have known something was wrong with him.”
“Michael, Maria’s right there is no way any of us could have known this was going to happen.” Liz said.
Michael looked at her pools of tears threatened to fall from his eyes.
“Damn it!” He yelled and punched the wall.
Max and Liz stood in shock and shot Maria with a questioning glance. They were all upset about this news but Michael was taking it very hard and neither of them had any idea why.
Maria avoided their looks and walked over to Michael.
“We don’t know anything yet Michael. He probably got drunk and he is sleeping it off some where. You have to calm down.”
Michael’s body relaxed as Maria spoke to him. She truly was his calming force.
“We are going to Roswell. I’ll go grab our bags.” Michael said and then placed a kiss on her lips.
When Max was sure that Michael was upstairs he turned to Maria.
“What was that all about?” He asked still in shock from what he had just witnessed.
Maria sighed.
“It’s a long story but the short version is that Michael and Kyle are brothers.”
“What?!” Liz and Max said in unison.
“Twins to be exact.” She added as she walked toward the door.
“I’ll give you the long version in the car and trust me it’s a doosie.”
As she walked out the door she didn’t even notice them picking their jaws up off the floor.
)*********************************************************************
“Wow Michael that is amazing. All this time you’ve been searching for a family and it was here all the time.” Liz said.
They had spent the last hour listening to Maria recount the tale of Michael’s birth and his relationship to Kyle. They had been surprised to say the least. After Maria had finished they had sat in silence until Liz had taken the initiative to break the silence.
Michael just grunted and focused on the road ahead of him. He knew that they had questions but at this moment he didn’t have time to answer them. He needed to get to Roswell and to Kyle before it was too late. As much as they tried to get him to believe that Kyle was fine somewhere deep inside he knew that wasn’t the case. He just sensed it.
“Twins have always fascinated me. They share a special bond unlike any other.” Liz said as if reading Michaels mind.
“Well Liz I think that happens only when the twins are biologically related.”
Max had sat quietly till this point not knowing what to make of this new development. He didn’t know what it meant or how it would impact them all.
Michael shot him a glance through the rear view mirror which he missed but Liz caught. She didn’t know what she sensed from Max but something was definitely bothering him and she could see that the comment he had made had bothered Michael.
“That’s not true.” Maria said sensing her fiancé tense.
“Maria’s right. I remember reading about this case where a woman went to a fertility clinic and got implanted with her eggs and another woman’s by accident. One of the twins was hers and the other wasn’t. When she gave birth she had to give the baby to the biological parents. The couples stayed in t ouch and the found that when either of the twins was stressed or in some sort of pain the other somehow sensed it.” Liz said.
Max shrugged his shoulders and gave Liz a half smile.
“Ever the scientist Liz.” He said.
After that the four of them sat in silence lost in their own thoughts as they moved closer to Roswell and the fate of Kyle.
*)***************************************************************************
Michael pulled the car in front of the Valenti home.
The four exited the vehicle quickly.
Michael spotted Kristiana in the backyard and Maria noticed her a few minutes later.
“I’m going to go in and see my mom and KJ.” Maria said knowing that Michael might want some time alone with his mother.
He gave her a smile and a quick kiss on the lips.
“Are you coming Liz?” Maria asked.
“I think that I will wait out here for a little bit.” She answered.
Maria nodded and headed toward the house.
Max watched Michael walk to Kristiana. He watched as the woman looked up at him and embraced him. Michael stiffened slightly at first but quickly relaxed into her embrace.
“Michael finding them doesn’t mean what you had is lost.”
Liz’s voice drew his attention from the scene between mother and son.
“What are you talking about?” He asked trying to play dumb.
“You’re jealous.” She said matter-of-factly.
“That’s ridiculous.” He said shaking his head.
“Is it? It would be perfectly natural. You and Kyle haven’t always been the best of friends and the two of you have a long history filled with struggle. First he was dating me, then he was following us, then you thought he slept with me and I think the thing that hurt you the most was losing a son to him.”
Max didn’t say anything. He knew she was right. He had spent a year believing that Tess’s son was his and that he was a father and then that was snatched away from him. He knew logically that it wasn’t Kyle’s fault but part of him blamed him for that loss.
“Now you’re afraid you’ll lose your brother.” She said when he didn’t respond.
“You’re right.” He whispered.
Max, this doesn’t change what has happened between the two of you. That bond will always be there but you have to let him connect with his family or you’ll lose him.”
“I know. Thank you Liz”
He reached over and pulled her into an embrace. They stood there entwined in each others arms until Michael came back.
“You ready?” Max asked when he returned.
“Yeah. Kristiana told me their location and that Rian is with Jim.”
“Ok let’s go.” Max said kissing Liz on the lips.
He began to make his way toward the car suddenly when he stopped suddenly.
“Isabel.” He said.
“Someone needs to let her know what’s going on.”
“I’ll go.” Liz said.
“Are you sure? She’s going to take this hard.”
“Yeah, I’m sure. I’m sure Maria’s mother will let me use the Jetta.”
“Be careful. I love you.”
“Tell Maria I’ll call her.” Michael said as he got in the car.
“I will. Bring him back to us Michael.”
He nodded his head and finished getting in the car.
Liz watched as they drove away. She knew they would find him and bring him home she only prayed it would be a happy event and not a sad.
