"Maria, you don't know how good it feels that someone knows. I've been keeping the secret too long," I tell her, aware of how close I'm standing.

She probably thinks I'm a freak, but whatever. The only friends I've really ever had were Alex and Isabel. I mean, sure I hung out with other people, but they knew nothing about me.

And I don't like any of them in the way I like her. I know this is pathetic, but it's nice to feel needed. Protecting her makes me feel a little more important.

*Maria*

"Maria, you don't know how good it feels that someone knows. I've been keeping the secret too long," he states reluctantly as if this is difficult for him to admit. He eyes the distance (or that there of) between us carefully and I can't help but throw caution to the wind.

Thats just the type of chick I am. I do now. Ask questions later.

"You never have to hide from me ,Michael." reply instantly without giving my choice of words much thought. It was just instinctive I guess.

"What I mean is... I know exactly who you are and I believe you are an amazing guy. I don't know anyone who would have been able to handle Hank like you did. Even farther beyond that with it being a lot harder for you.. you know because of your.. uh orgin. You fit it at school alot better than I do, and I was born here."I give a slight laugh but it doesn't reach my eyes. I can tell he's deeply troubled about something, and I won't leave until i figure out what it is.

Michael

"You never have to hide from me ,Michael." Maria says, and I look down at her, seeing her differently. I've been hiding all my life. Those few words make me feel almost secure, and as she goes on about how great a guy I am, yeah right, I feel something click inside.

All thoughts seem to float away along with any words and I just stare down at her for a moment. Then the moment's gone and I feel myself bending down. Taking her by surprise I kiss her quickly, but then stand up again almost right away.

Oh god. Where did that come from?

*Maria*

I ma a little startled when he leans down and kisses me softly but quickly. Standing straight up I have to subdue my urge to laugh at the guilty expression on his face. Did he think that it was wrong? That we shouldn't. Well, if he's going to feel bad about it might as well give him something to truly regret.

With that I wrap my arms around his neck and press my lips to his for a long lingering kiss. My fingers play with the tiny hairs on the back of his neck happily as I suprise him.

Ending the kiss, I unravel my arms so that I am out of his embrace and I take a step back. Well, this is how it always goes for me. One step forward, two steps back.

Michael

I'm surprised as Maria smiles, before kissing me back, wrapping her arms around me. Unfortunately, it's over too soon, and I open my eyes to see her standing back again.

Confused, I try to read her expression. Is she regretting it? Did I just screw everything up again?

"Maria..?" I question, at a loss for words again. That's been happening a lot lately. It's kind of embarrassing.

*Maria*

"Maria..?" his eyss hold questions that I don't have the answers to.

"Don't sweat it Spaceboy." I smile happily. "I just realized that words aren't our thing.

Taking his hand in mine, I squeese it lightly in reassurance.

Michael

She squeezes my hand lightly and I smile at her. "So, you're not going to leave, are you?" I ask, my voice coming back. I feel so much happy than I've felt in a long time, and if she were to leave, it would probably come crashing down.

*Maria*

"So, you're not going to leave, are you?" he asks with a twinge of happiness that sounds slightly hopeful.

"Nah, Roswell has some pretty interesting characters. I think I'll hang around a tad longer. Who knows? Maybe I could fit in here for a while." I reply with a warm smile. One that I don't think I'd ever possessed til I'd met him.

Michael

"I think you fit in absolutely fine," I tell her, returning her smile.

It's completely dark outside now; time flies fast. "It's getting sorta late, do you have somewhere you can go?" I ask again, glad that at least this time her answer won't be to skip town.

*Maria*

"I think you fit in absolutely fine," he states honestly and I feel really good about myself.

"It's getting sorta late, do you have somewhere you can go?" he questions with geninue concern.

"Yeah, I think Tess will let me crash at her place."
