Chapter 41

Images flashed at him from every angle, some easier to make out more than others. Yet one thing was clear in all of them: she had lied to him. His body was jerking as his mind was pulled away from him and into another dimension. Everything around him faded out. He was no longer on his bed with Liz, but pulled into the memory of that night.

He climbed up the ladder and paced across her balcony in anticipation. Something big was going to happen that night; he could feel the electricity in the air. His eyes widened when he saw them in bed together, the intimate way she touched his arm and laughed at something eh said. A hand reached it and pulled out his still beating heart, constricting his chest so much that it was hard to breathe. The tickets fell from his hand and the bile in his throat rose. He couldn’t hear his footsteps as he ran back across her balcony, all he could hear was her laughter from before still echoing in his head. He didn’t hear the car horns as he crossed the road to his jeep absently. He was too numb to even think, stuck in a comatose state that would stay with him for months after.

But now he knew differently. He knew it was all a set up. The flashes changed to before he saw them in bed together, flashes from inside Liz’s mind of her and Kyle sitting on the bed together minutes before he arrived, talking, not making love. Flashes of an older him

A scream of pleasure caught his ear, bringing him out of the flashes with a primal roar and back into his body, the same body that was pounding into the girl below him without any control. Before he could even think an electrical like current ran all through his veins and the cries of the girl underneath him were drowned out by his own groan of satisfaction. His hips jerked violently as his seed was released inside of her.

Sated and confused, he rolled off her body and onto his back. Max’s heart was pounding in his chest so hard he thought it would explode. But when the silent whimpers of the girl next to him broke through his exhausted condition, understanding dawned on him and a thousand other emotions crashed down into his subconscious.

She hadn’t been crying out in pleasure before, but in pain. The flashes had consumed him when he had entered her warm body, erasing the alcohol from his system and trapping him in his subconscious. They had taken him away to another place. He had no control of his body or his mind. She had been crying out for help underneath him whilst he was in another state of mind.

Oh God, he had practically raped her.

He swallowed hard, his mind reeling with what he had just done and what he had just found out. The alcohol had warn off as soon as he had joined their bodies, so he had no one to blame but himself.

He looked over to her cautiously and noticed the red liquid staining his sheets. Bile rose up fast in his throat. He had caused that. He had taken away her virginity, their virginity without a second thought. Granted, he was paralysed by the flashes, but the point was they would never get this back again…

“Liz, I…” He started, his voice raw with emotion and his eyes glazed over. This wasn’t really happening. He would wake up in a few minutes and this would all be a nightmare. IT had to be.

Max reached out to touch her but she flinched away from him, drawing the covers up to hide her nude form. Her eyes were wide with fear and wet with unleashed tears. Her bottom lip trembled, and Max marvelled at how she looked like a child at that moment. She scurried off the bed with the sheet still wrapped tightly around her body and fumbled around on the floor looking for the discarded parts of her clothing.

Max reached for a blanket to cover his body when Liz stood up from the bed, taking the over sheet away from him. He sat bewildered in his bed. The world could have been ending and yet he wouldn’t have even notice. His mind was still so caught up in what had just happened, in all the things he had seen. What was all of that? All those flashes, were they real, or just some crazy dream that he created?

The sound of harsh retching brought him out of his daze and crashing back into reality. He quickly stood up and searched for his boxers on his bedroom floor. As soon as he had them on his hips Max was running into his bathroom and kneeling down beside Liz, holding the hair away from her face and rubbing soothing circles on her back whilst she vomited into the porcelain bowl.

When there were no more contents of her stomach left to throw up, she fell back against his hard chest, needing the support that he gave yet wishing he would just disappear at the same time. What had she just done? He stomach and abdomen hurt. In between her legs was incrusted with dry blood and her head was pounding like crazy from the alcohol.

When the haze the alcohol caused had cleared it was too late and he was already inside of her. His body had started to move frantically inside of her and his eyes were closed. She had screamed out in pain, yelled at him and dug her nails in, begging him to stop, but he couldn’t hear her. He had had no control over his own body, and that was why he hadn’t stopped. Liz knew Max, and she knew that if he had heard her screaming out in so much pain that she felt as though her body was on fire, he would have stopped. Even if it were his worst enemy, he would have stopped, right?

Maybe this was just punishment for all the hurtful things she had done and said to him. Maybe this was just his payback.

His warms arms encircled her lithe body and she jumped in response to his touch. Max felt her body suddenly tense and guilt washed over his conscious. His mind was thrown back to a time all those months ago when he had broken down her door in Phoenix and found a man trying to do the exact same thing to her as what he had just done. Whether it was intentional or not didn’t matter. He had taken advantage of Liz, even though he had no control of his own actions, and in the process damaged her for life.

They both knew that this was something they would never forget. They knew that this was something that would scar them for life, and make it near impossible to reconcile what they had once had. But max was more concerned with how this would affect Liz. She was already dangling on the edge, and he feared that the events of today would be the final push that she needed. He was scared that she would do something stupid, something that she would regret for the rest of her life.

“I’m so sorry,” Max whispered, his mouth right next to her ear. His voice cracked with emotion as he said the words. Liz shrugged out of his embrace and stood up on shaky legs. She struggled to do up the buttons at the front of her pants due to her hands trembling so much. She just wanted to get out of there, or scream. Either one was good at that point in time. The room, the house, Max – they were all suffocating her. The full realisation of what had just happened hadn’t really dawned on her yet.

She calmly walked out of the bathroom and back into his room, picking up the last scrap of clothing that belonged to her: her shirt. She pulled it over her head and wrapped her arms tightly around her body, pulling up an invisible shield that was virtually indestructible.

Max stood in the doorway to the bathroom and silently called out to her with his eyes. He could see what was about to happen. He knew that she would run; shut herself of from everyone and everything. He pleaded with her to stay here with him, promising that they would work it out. She shook her head in response to his silent request and turned to flee the room, the house, and if she felt the need, Roswell, but his last words stopped her in her tracks, creating a conversation that she wished she would never have to have.

“I saw the flashes Liz.” He lifted his hand and the door slammed shut beside her. “You’re not going anywhere until you tell me what really happened the night of the Gomez concert.”

Um... i think there's only going to be a few more parts to go with this. Perhaps 6? Maybe, depending how much i write. I'll try and have another update soon, but i apologise in advance if that doesn't happen.

There's still hope! There's still hope!

Thanks for your wonderful commments. So, its only taken me 42 chapters, but finally, we're getting somewhere. Don't judge Liz or Max straight away when you read this chapter... i think the ending may surprise you a bit.

Chapter 42

Her hand fumbled with the front door of the café, her vision blurry from the tears that could no longer be held back. The door jingled happily upon her entrance to the restaurant and she cursed the sound silently. It was by far a happy occasion. She had left his house more damaged than she was when she arrived.

The customers all looked up from their late dinners to see the girl in the doorway. Her body was swaying slightly from fatigue. Long tresses of messy dark brown hair covered her face, but the pain in her soul radiated from her stunning brown eyes.

Isabel, who was sitting at the counter with a blood of alien smoothie, stood up in concern and rushed over to the girl. Her helping hands were swatted away and the girl continued walking straight ahead, ignoring everyone thing around her.

“Liz?” The blonde questioned softly, her hand reaching out to steady the petite girl from collapsing on the floor. Her entire body hurt like never before. He didn’t even have the decency to heal the physical pain he had caused. Yet Liz still knew it was the emotional wounds that would scar the most.

“I’m fine,” She whispered out through a dry throat, raw from screaming and crying. Anyone who saw her could tell how much of a lie her words were. The young girl was far from all right. She took step after step until she reached the back room. It was then she broke out into a run.

Liz’s body shook with vicious sobs as she made her way up the stairs of the Crashdown and ran into the safety to her room. She hoped that Isabel wouldn’t follow her. She just wanted to be alone. Tonight had been by far the worst night she had ever experienced. She just wanted the hell of this last year to be over. She needed all the pain to end.

She stopped short upon entering her room, wincing at the evidence of her earlier drinking fest. Empty bottles scattered across her floor and wet stains were splattered across the carpet from accidental spills. She couldn’t even remember what made her go and get the first bottle, but she knew it had something to do with Max.

It always did.

Her lifeless body collapsed onto the floor, shaking from her cries of heartache and pain. God, the things he had said to her tonight. It was why she had always been afraid to tell him the truth. And his reaction was the worst possible one she could have ever conjured up…

“You’re lying! I don’t believe you!” He shouted forcefully from across the room. He couldn’t stop pacing back and forth, his hands practically pulling out his raven hair in frustration. All the things she had just told him sounded so ludicrous it was almost funny.

“I’m not lying. It really happened Max. Why else would I put myself through all this? What, you think I just woke up one day and said ‘hey, why don’t I make everyone’s life a living hell for the next year?’” Her tone was bitter, her mind astonished that he would accuse her of making it all up. Did they even know each other anymore? The old Max would have never accused her of treason.

“What you’re saying happened is impossible! I may be an alien but at least I’m a realistic one. Time travel counters everything they teach you in science Liz. It doesn’t happen.” His face was red and his throat raw from screaming at her, at himself. He didn’t want to believe he was responsible for her being this way. He didn’t want to know that everything that happened was his fault. For once he didn’t want to be the controlling one, the responsible one.

Liz looked over at his ragged form, feeling all the fight evaporate from her body. She was too weak, too tired to continue on with all this warfare. “Why won’t you believe me?” Her voice was barely a whisper, but he heard her anyhow.

Max took a shaky breath and turned his back on her. When he finally spoke, his voice was low and emotionless. “I think you should leave.”

He just needed time to run it over in his head. He needed to be alone.

Resentment and fiery words crept up into Liz’s throat, but she would play the better person here. She stood up silently and calmly walked out of his room, making sure she slammed his bedroom door with a bitter force on the way out. She didn’t stop running until she was a block away from the Crashdown…

Liz stood up, a sudden fresh burst of power entering her system from the memory. She had to get out. Roswell was suffocating, constricting. Squeezing all the life out of her. The one person that she thought could help her was now her enemy. She had nowhere else to turn.

She could leave Roswell again, but they would only come and find her. They always did. No matter how many times she escaped, they’d put her back in the cage, locked up as if captivity.

Running away from her problems was no good.

She looked up and a silver sparkle caught her eye. The shaver blade glimmered in the moonlight, glowing as if sent by the heavens to lead her on her way. It was then that Liz Parker knew that her only way out of Roswell, out of the pain, would be out of her life as well.

She would make him suffer forever, like the older him made her suffer. She would take kill his heart by killing herself.

~*~*~*~*~*~

He lay on his still unmade bed, blood stained and sweat covered, trying to process everything that had happened in the last few hours. It was all too much. It felt like a dream, a horrible nightmare that he just wanted to wake up from. He was numb, staring blankly up at the ceiling whilst a million thoughts ran rampant in his head.

He pinched the skin on his arm, needing to wake up from all the torment. He wanted to go back to simpler times, a time where he was a boy in love with a girl. A time where he would look at her and see the love shining in her eyes. All he saw now was hurt and hate.

“Max!” Isabel’s voice echoed through the hall. He could hear her heavy footsteps as she ran to his room and swung open the door. She visibly relaxed once she saw that he was okay. After seeing Liz that way at the Crashdown, she had run home to make sure he was all right, that nothing had happened to them together.

Her eyes widened upon noticing the state of his room. Pillows and blankets were everywhere. A glass lay smashed against the wall from a fit of rage Max had endured after he ordered Liz to leave. He lay motionless on his bed, eyes blank and breathing shallow.

“Max?” She questioned cautiously, stepping fully into the room and quietly shutting the door behind her. “What happened?”

“Nothing.” He mumbled after a long pause and rolled onto his side, blocking Isabel out of his world. He took a deep, shaky breath. The pillow smelt like her – vanilla. Some things just didn’t change, something he was thankful for.

“I-I saw Liz, just before.” Isabel started softly, hesitantly sitting down on the side of his bed so she didn’t disturb him too much. “She looked terrible Max. And I think…” She swallowed thickly. Why was her throat suddenly so dry?

“I think she may try something again. I’m not sure what, but she just had this… this vibe, about her. You know?” The worry was evident in her voice, no matter how hard Isabel tried to hide it. She was scared for both of them. They were both already so damaged. She didn’t think either of them would survive another attempt of Liz’s to escape her despondency.

They needed each other, whether they saw it or not. Max and Liz would never be complete unless they were together.

“Max, I don’t know what happened here today, but this is your last chance. I really think that something big is going to happen tonight. I can feel it… and I just need you to know that if you don’t do something drastic now… it may be too late.” Isabel urged. He needed to hear her words. He needed to stop acting like such a selfish dick and do something drastic to help the one he loved.

She left his room peacefully, making sure to shut the door behind her. Max rolled back over onto his back, eyes once again glued to the ceiling. He stayed like that for at least another hour, thoughts and memories swirling around in his head so fast that it gave him a headache.

Yet, one question remained at the forefront of his mind: what if Liz was telling the truth?

He didn’t want it to be true, because then it would all be his fault. He would be responsible for everything that had happened. Logically, he knew it wasn’t technically his fault. It was the other version of him, the one Liz had vehemently insisted had come to her that night and made her say those things to him, do those things to him.

He lazily pinched the skin on his arm with his thumb and index finger, making sure that this was in fact the reality he was forced to live with. But there was something different about this pinch. It was as if with that one small jolt of pain, everything cleared up. The world came into focus, and the realisation of how heavy the situation they were in was came on full force. He needed her, just like she needed him. No matter how ridiculous the story was that she told him, he knew that Liz would never joke about something that serious. He had just been too busy living in his self-indulgent world to realise it.

Max jolted up out of bed and flung his shoes on his feet haphazardly, hopping down the corridor to snatch the jeep keys off the hook. He ran out the front door and jumped into the jeep with lightning bolt alacrity. As soon as it was in gear he was speeding through the streets of Roswell to get to her.

Panic set in, a heavy weight settling in his stomach that made the hairs on the back of his neck stand up. He knew what Isabel was talking about, because he felt it to. Something was going to happen, and he had to get to Liz to stop it.

He clamoured up the fire escape of her room, jumping over the hand railing. He froze as soon as his feet hit the ground. There at the corner of the balcony, curled up in a ball, tears hammering down her cheeks and a glistening red blade on the ground by her side, was the love of his life.

“Liz?” He whispered in fear, dropping down helplessly onto his knees in front of her. Distress set in and he reached out to turn her wide eyes up to meet his gaze.

“I couldn’t do it.” Came her strangled sob. Her entire body shook with the force of her tears, and she stretched out her creamy wrist to show him the tiny lacerations she had made, but couldn’t make any deeper. She couldn’t take her life away from him.

“I couldn’t do it.” She repeated when Max pulled her tiny body into his arms, tears now streaming down his cheeks also. He placed a tender kiss on her forehead and rocked them back and forth, whispering promises to her that everything would be all right.

There they sat, two broken souls reunited for the first time in months. He would save her from the darkness that had surrounded her life for far too long. It was the only thing left to do.

Thanks for ur fb.

Chapter 43

Her eyes fluttered open and immediately shut when the light streaming through the window stung her eyes and made her head throb. The memories of the previous nights events had come crashing down on her as she was drifting out of sleep half an hour ago, but now the consequences came into view with the morning’s light.

She had technically had sex, a horrible and painful experience brought on by months of self-torture and a night filled with various alcohols. But all of the pain she had gone through to keep the one secret that would save the world was useless because Max found out anyway. And then to make it worse she had run home crying and tried to end her life… and failed.

When had everything become so screwed up? Liz longed for the small time Max and her had that was perfect, that it felt as though were just normal teenagers with nothing to worry about. If she knew Future Max’s time travelling secret then there would be no way of stopping her from going back in time to two years ago and the night on her balcony that changed her entire life.

That night everything was so simple. All they knew was each other and how strong their feelings were. Neither cared that Max was only half human and that by giving into temptation and risking everything they would both be leaving with shattered hearts.

She could feel his strong body spooned up against her back with one heavy arm draped around her waist. Even in the light of day she still felt loved by him. Whether or not she deserved that love was another question. She was too afraid to look over he shoulder and see if he was awake, but the need to go to the bathroom was becoming stronger by the minute.

Liz gently touched the hand that was resting on her stomach and attempted to lift it away so she could sneak out of Max’s embrace without waking him and find salvation in her bathroom. His scent was too strong and his skin to warm, igniting feelings that Liz really shouldn’t have been having until she figured out what she wanted. When she attempted to remove his arm from her waist, his grip tightened around her body and her eyes widened in surprise.

“We need to talk,” a sleep laced voice mumbled from behind her. He had woken up a little over an hour ago and had just been watching her sleep. Last night she had been so drained that she had fallen asleep in his arms in the rain. Max brought her inside and put her into bed, but she woke up long enough to ask him to stay with her. There was no way to describe the terror he had felt as soon as he saw her last night. It was as if his heart had stopped and his soul had died. But now she was safe and alive, right here with him. He didn’t want her to go anywhere.

“I have to go to the bathroom.” Liz said, trying once more to escape his hold. She wiggled around in his arms but he was too strong for her.

“Not until we talk about what happened last night,” Max said more sternly this time, rolling her around so they were face to face.

“Max, let me go!” Liz struggled, kicking his legs and refusing to meet his eyes. She knew that as soon as she looked at his face her resolve would melt and she would be putty in his hands.

Her knee struck an extremely sensitive spot of Max’s lower anatomy that had him growling in pain and rolling them both over until she was pinned beneath his robust form. He held her hands together up against his chest and supported himself on his elbows, careful not to hurt her but also making sure that she wouldn’t be able to escape until he had said everything he needed to say.

“What the hell are you doing?” Liz cried out in frustration. Since when did it become a crime to want to go and pee? It was hard enough before trying to ignore the closeness of their bodies, but now with Max hovering inches above her it was becoming increasingly difficult. Memories of the pain she had experienced last night in a similar position flashed through her mind, but she shook them off and focused on escaping his hold.

“You promised me Liz! You said you wouldn’t do it anymore, that you wouldn’t hurt yourself again!”

“I didn’t hurt myself,” she responded angrily.

“You tried to, and that’s bad enough on its own.” Max’s voice cracked slightly at the thought of what could have happened if she actually went through with it.

“Max,” Liz sighed, the fight evaporating out of her body fast. “What do you want from me?”

It was a loaded question. What did Max want from her? The simplest answer was everything, but he knew that if he answered with that it would just scare her away even more.

“Liz, I want to be with you. I know all the consequences and I still don’t care, why can’t you see that? We know that Tess can’t leave Roswell and we know that one day there may be an attack, so if or when that happens, I promise you that we’ll be ready. But I can’t go through any of that without you. And I want you to get better. I need you to realise that you don’t have to hurt yourself or run away. You can talk to me and from now on I’ll listen, you can trust me. I’ll give you as much time as you need, but just so you know I’m not going anywhere. I won’t back down this time, no matter how hard you try and push me away. I love you too much for that.”

Liz swallowed hard, knowing that he meant every single word, but it was too soon. As much as she longed to lean in and kiss him right then, to trust him with her heart and soul for the second time, it was too soon. Her mind was too clouded and she would just end up regretting it later. It would be easier to take a step back, look at it all from a different perspective, figure out what she wanted and then fix things with Max.

She mustered up all the courage she could handle and tried to speak in a calm, indifferent tone. Like the things he had just said had no effect on her what so ever. “Can I please go to the bathroom now?”

His shoulders slumped in defeat and his grip that was holding her body in place fell away. Max rolled off of her and Liz scrambled out from underneath him. He was so sure she would give into him. He could see it in her eyes, she was thinking about what he had said and he was so sure she would give in and go back to the old Liz, the one he fell in love with. “Guess I was wrong,” Max mumbled sadly as the bathroom door closed.

Liz splashed her face with some cold water and sunk down against the side of the bath. When she was finally collected enough she stood up and tried to prepare herself to face him again, but when she opened the bathroom door her room was empty.
