Chapter Fifty

Liz sat in the backseat of her parent’s car, still barefoot, though no one had noticed her lack of shoes yet. She did her best to let her mind go blank, but Liz still heard the argument coming from the front of the car. Her forehead leaned against the coolness of the window pane, and her forehead rocked back and forth across it to the tune that coming from the radio. Liz’s lips moved softly as she sang along under her breath.

I'm going under, I'm suffocating
Drowning but I'm holding on
What keeps me breathing? Don't have an answer
I'm drowning but I won't let go

Mrs. Parker: Jeff, this is ridiculous. She doesn’t need to go to the emergency room. She’s awake and... alert... Enough to know what’s going on.

Away now, no way out
Away now, no way out

Mr. Parker: I don’t care about any of that. This isn’t about today.

Mrs. Parker: You’ve got to be kidding me! We’re going to the ER so you can find out if Liz is a virgin? This is nuts!

I've been a walkin' a lonesome highway
I felt as though I had no home
My bed's been taken by another
I made the bed, now lie alone

Mr. Parker: She’s not sure. He says he’s not sure, either. What the hell does that mean? Are they lying? Are they doing drugs? Lizzie! Are you doing drugs?

Keep it away now motherfucker, now keep it away
Keep it away now motherfucker, now keep it away

Mr. Parker: What did you say?!

Mrs. Parker: I don’t think she heard you.

Mr. Parker: I can’t just turn around while I’m driving. Get her attention for me.

Mrs. Parker: Liz! Honey, your father wants to -

Liz: Huh?

Mr. Parker: Why are you so out of it lately?

Liz: I was just singing to the radio.

Mrs. Parker: Liz, honey, the radio’s not on...

Mr. Parker: What did he get you started on? LSD? Pot? Sniffing glue? We’ll get you help, baby.

Liz: Why would I sniff glue?

Mr. Parker: Because it gives a decent buzz if you -

Mrs. Parker: Jeffrey!

Liz: Daddy?

Mr. Parker: This isn’t about me! It’s about you! Where are you getting the stuff?

Liz: What?

Mr. Parker: Drugs are bad. Bad for you and bad for -

Mrs. Parker: Take us home, Jeff.

Mr. Parker: No.

Mrs. Parker: Honestly! Do you really think that she’s doing drugs?

Mr. Parker: I... No, but... She... This could be my past coming back to haunt me. My mother always said it would.

Mrs. Parker: Everyone’s mother says that. It’s like ‘Santa’s watching’...
Liz: Speaking of Santa...

Mr. Parker: I just... What are we supposed to do, Nancy?

Mrs. Parker: I don’t think finding out if she’s having sex or not is going to help the situation... Whatever the situation is. Would you have wanted to have this conversation with your parents at sixteen?

Mr. Parker: What? No, I -

Mrs. Parker: And how old were you the first time you had sex?

Mr. Parker: That doesn’t matter! She -

Mrs. Parker: Uh huh. And how old was the girl you were with?

Mr. Parker: I... Shit.

Mrs. Parker: Take us home. We can make a doctor’s appointment for her.

Mr. Parker. (sighs) Okay.

Meanwhile...

Max: What the fuck was that back there?

Isabel: I don’t know what you mean.

Max: Don’t start this shit with me, Isabel.

Isabel: Why are you defending her? She fucked around behind your back, and she was gonna tell everyone that we’re... what we are!

Max: But she didn’t. She wouldn’t have, okay?

Isabel: You don’t know that for sure.

Max: No. I don’t. But you don’t know for sure that she was going to tell.

Isabel: Fine. She didn’t tell... yet. But, Max... How can you even stand to look at her? How could you... be with her... after everything?

Max: You don’t know the whole story. If you had bothered paying attention at Michael’s, you’d at least have a small understanding of -

Isabel: What? That Liz is fucking crazy? Yeah, that came through loud and clear.

Max: I’m worried about her. I... I’ve never seen her like this.

Isabel: So... You really haven’t had sex with her?

Max: We... I can’t talk to you about this!

Isabel: Who are you gonna talk to, then? You and Michael still aren’t on the best of terms.

Max: But at least he treats the people I love with a modicum of respect.

Isabel: I can’t respect what she’s done to you.

Max: Can’t you see? If she did do what we think she did, it shouldn’t matter... Not to you. It’s between the two of us. I still don’t understand how you found out about it, anyhow.

Isabel: Oh. I... I, uh...

Max: (sighs) Whatever. Just... Promise me you’ll at least try to be nicer to Liz.

Isabel: Yes, your highness.

Max: No. (hurt tone) I asked you... as your brother.

Isabel: Fine. I’ll try.

Max: Thank you.

Meanwhile...

Alex: So... What do you think is wrong with Liz?

Maria: I... I don’t know, Alex. She talked to me a little while ago, but...

Alex: But?

Maria: It’s just... It’s all so unreal, and... I’d think she was lying, except...

Alex: Except that this is Liz, who can’t lie at all.

Maria: She’s gotten a hell of a lot better in the last year.

Alex: Yeah. Well, we all have. But you know what I mean.

Maria: Right. I... She seems to genuinely believe the things she’s been telling us.

Alex: That’s what scares me the most.

Maria: And what about this sudden display of powers?

Alex: I don’t know. I mean, obviously, it’s come from something Max did to her.

Maria: Yeah. But what?

Alex: Well, I’d assume that it was the healing...

Maria: But...

Alex: But it might be... Well, you know.

Maria: No one’s confirmed that.

Alex: No one’s denied it, either.

Meanwhile...

Tess: Where is the little bitch? I’ll kill her!

Michael: Like I’m gonna tell you where she is if you’re gonna kill her.

Tess: Whose side are you on?

Michael: Look. I’m not on any side. But I’m not gonna bury another fucking body in the desert. And I don’t think Liz’s disappearance would be as easy to explain away as...

Tess: Pierce.

Michael: (sighs) Right.

Sheriff Valenti: Are you okay, Tess?

Tess: I’ll be okay.

Sheriff Valenti: Good, good. (pauses) You, uh... We were worried about you.

Tess: I’m okay. Max will fix me right up.

Michael: Max is gone.

Tess: What? Where did he go?

Kyle: Liz collapsed after she, uh... blasted you.

Tess: And of course he had to run to her like some damn puppy in heat.

Michael: Sounds about right.

Kyle: You shouldn’t talk about Liz like that. She’s not your enemy. She’s the best friend you aliens have ever had.

Sheriff Valenti: He’s right. It would behoove you to treat her better.

Tess: Why, so she won’t tell on us?

Michael: (mouths) Behoove?

Kyle: (whispers) ‘Word of the Day’ toilet paper.

Michael: Look. I don’t know what your plans are, but I’ve got a shift in half an hour.

Kyle: So?

Michael: So, get out of my apartment.

Kyle: Bye to you, too, Guerin. So nice to see you again. As hospitable as usual...

Sheriff Valenti: Kyle! Let’s go. Tess, you coming?

Tess: Yeah. Later, Michael.

Michael grunted in response and closed the door behind them.

*I need to find a way to block this story from opening. I sit down to write a paper, and the next thing I know, I'm knee-deep in crazy... Enjoy!

Chapter Fifty One

Liz was humming to herself as she arranged her books in her locker. Maria walked up to Liz, searching through her bag until she found a tube of lipgloss.

Liz: Grandma got run over by a reindeer...

Maria: What’s got you so chipper this morning?

Liz: Morning to you, too, Maria.

Maria: What’s the deal?

Liz: I don’t know. I guess I got bit by the Christmas spirit.

Maria: I see... Where were you this weekend? You weren’t at work, and I left you at least ten messages.

Liz moved aside so that Maria could look in her locker mirror to apply the gloss.

Liz: Yeah. I, um... Had some things to deal with.

Maria: What happened?

Liz: I take it you haven’t talked with Max?

Maria: Nope.

Liz: (sighs) Well, Max brought me to his house Friday afternoon, after I passed out -

Maria: ‘Cause you zapped Tess’ flabby ass!

Liz: Maria! I... I didn’t mean to do that. It... I mean, I...

Maria: Okay. Let’s just skip over that part for now. We will discuss the look on her face later!

Liz: Well, we took a nap together, I guess -

Maria: Where?

Liz: In Max’s bed.

Maria: Ooh! Details!

Liz: Honestly, all we did was sleep. I tried to get him to... Well, anyway, we -

Maria: Tried what?

Liz: To... to fool around, I guess.

She closed her locker and turned to face Maria.

Maria: Damn, seducing him in his own bedroom? And he said no?

Liz: Wow. My self-esteem is climbing high.

Maria: Sorry. It’s just...

Liz: Yeah. I know. Teenage boy turning down sex. But, this is Max we’re talking about.

Maria: Ah, yes, the Master of Restraint.

Liz: Yeah, so, anyway... They asked me to stay for dinner, and we were all sitting around the table eating, when Isabel suddenly spits her food out all over her mother and -

Maria: Gross!

The girls began walking toward Maria’s locker.

Liz: It was so gross! There were chunks of pineapple and hamburger clinging to her hair.

Maria: Wait, you ate something with pineapple and hamburg in it? Like, together?

Liz: Yeah, it was great. There was pineapple, hamburger, cheese, hot sauce, diced ham -

Maria: Oh, that is so sick.

Liz: It was really good.

Maria: Well, I’m going to focus on not puking now.

Liz: Do you want to hear the rest?

Maria: Does it involve anymore food?

Liz: No.

Maria: Continue.

Maria opened her locker and braced herself for the inevitable. Books, notebooks, gym clothes, and a curling iron came tumbling out. Liz rolled her eyes and helped clean up.

Liz: Well, suddenly, Max’s dad got all pissy and started yelling about family and responsibility, and the next thing I knew, he was lecturing Max and me about our sex life!

Maria: What? How did he -

Liz: I have no clue. I mean, I don’t know for sure that Max and I have... had sex... but Mr. Evans suddenly knows about it?

Maria: That’s strange.

Liz: Oh, I haven’t even gotten started.

Maria: Hey, I hate to rush you, but we’ve only got a few minutes before the bell rings.

Liz: Okay, shortened story. Max and Isabel got into a huge argument, Mr. Evans called my parents over, I passed out, the Evans’ told my parents that Max and I are sexually active, my dad tried to kill Max, Isabel tried to kill me, my mom talked my dad out of taking me to the gynecologist, and I ended up seeing a therapist for two hours on Saturday afternoon.

Maria: Wow. That’s, uh... Wait! That bitch tried to kill you?

Liz: (shrugs) You wanted the short story.

Maria opened her mouth to protest, but instead let out a shriek as two large hands covered her widening eyes.

Alex: So, anyone buy me a Christmas present yet?

Maria: Alex, we’re having a serious discussion here.

Alex: Ohhh. So, you’re going in on a gift together, eh? Hmm, that does expand the list a bit...

Liz: I’m buying you some women’s lingerie.

Maria: What?

Alex: Wow. You’re talking to me?

Maria: Forget about that, why are you getting him women’s lingerie?

Liz: I guess it’s the cool thing to do. Isabel said Max has a pair in his night stand.

Alex: Max is a cross dresser?

Liz: His underwear are always men’s.

Alex: (groans) I don’t even want to know how many times you’ve seen him in his underwear.

Maria: The jury’s still out on the count.

Liz: So, anyhow, I thought -

Maria: If he’s not wearing them, what’s he doing with them?

Alex: You’d think I’d have learned by now...

Liz: Well, Isabel seemed to think that they were mine, but -

Maria: Do you think he sniffs them?

Liz: It’s possible. I’ve seen him do that before.

Alex: (blocks ears) La la la la la...

Maria: Do you think they’re yours?

Liz: Well, I don’t know who else’s they would be, but I don’t remember giving him any of my underwear.

Maria: Maybe he wacks off with them.

Alex: Gross! I’m out of here!

Liz and Maria laughed as they watched Alex walk down the hallway with his hands still covering his ears. They headed toward Liz’s first period class.

Maria: Oh, there he is.

Liz: Who?

Maria: Max, duh!

Liz: Okay...

Maria: Hey, girlfriend! Yoo-hoo, Max! Max Evans! Over here!

Liz: I can’t believe you just did that.

Max: Uh, hey, Maria. Liz.

Liz: Hi.

Maria: So, there’s a nasty rumor going around about you.

Max: Me?

Maria: Yup.

Liz: Maria!

Maria: Word is, you jerk off with a pair of Liz’s panties. Care to confirm or deny?

Liz: Maria!

Max: Umm...

Liz: Don’t answer her, Max.

Maria: Are you telling me you don’t want to know if he does?

Liz: That’s not what I’m saying. I just...

Maria: So, it’s settled. What’s the deal, Max?

Max: I, umm... The bell’s gonna ring soon...

Maria: All we need is a yes or a no. Doesn’t take more than a second.

Liz: Will you let him go? God, you are so embarrassing sometimes!

Max threw Liz an appreciative smile as he began to walk away.

Max: I’ll see you at lunch.

Liz: Sure.

Maria watched him until he was out of sight and then turned to Liz with an excited hop.

Maria: Did you see the look on his face? He’s definitely using your undies for his dirty deeds!

Liz: We don’t know that for sure.

Maria: I got all the confirmation I needed from the panicked look on his face.

Liz: Maria!

Maria: C’mon, girl. You’ve got to give me details now. I can’t get by with the abridged version.

Liz: Fine. Third period?

Maria: Student lounge?

Liz: You got it.

Chapter Fifty Two

Liz and Maria reclined lazily on one of the ugly yellow couches the school so graciously provided as part of the Student Lounge. Maria was busy filing her nails while Liz recopied her notes.

Maria: So, is your dad gonna, like, kill Max, or what?

Liz: (sighs) Max, Isabel, José, the meat distributor... He’s compiled quite the list.

Maria: José?

Liz: Dad heard him flirting with me.

Maria: He’s been doing that since you were in diapers.

Liz: I know that, you know that, my dad knows that... He’s just... He’s gone off the deep end, Maria. And, you know, I thought my mom was coming around, but then...

Maria: What?

*flashback*

Mr. Parker: Your mother and I forbid you to see Max anymore. He's not welcome at our restaurant. You are not to go out on a date with him or attend the same parties. If you pass him in school, you are to look the other way.

Mrs. Parker: It’s for the best.

*end flashback*

Maria: Whoa.

Liz: Yeah.

Maria: Does Max know about this?

Liz: No.

Maria: But none of this is Max’s fault. I mean, at least not the Max we know. You know?

Liz groaned and threw her notebooks onto the table in front of her. She batted her eyelashes at Maria, who sighed and put away her nail file. Maria then patted her lap, and Liz rested her head on her friend’s thighs.

Liz: I can’t believe that made sense to me.

Maria: Me, either.

Liz: About that, Maria.

Maria: Future Dude?

Liz: Yeah... I think I made it all up.

Maria: What?

Liz: No, no, think about it. Wouldn’t this all make way more sense if I just bumped my head too hard or something? Or maybe there’s an odorless, hallucinogenic gas floating into my room at night? Because... This has just been madness. I mean, of course I’m a virgin. And so is Max. And... I don’t know, maybe we’ve all been sharing our dreams, or only some of us, and that’s why some of us remember stuff and others don’t.

Maria: Riiight...

Liz: I know, it sounds crazy.

Maria: No. Crazy is you turning into a human Christmas tree. This is... messed up.

Liz: Well, whatever. I need to talk to Max to tell him that I can’t talk to him anymore.

Maria: Want me to do that for you?

Liz: No. Even if I get in trouble for it... He deserves to hear it from me, you know?

Maria: Right. Umm, what did you and the therapist talk about?

Liz: He thinks I’m hallucinating.

Maria: How much did you tell him?

Liz sighed and sat up again. She rested her head against the back of the couch and stared blankly at the ceiling. Maria nervously twisted her hair around a finger.

Liz: Not much. But, you know, the crazy thing is that I could tell him everything, the truth, I mean... but that would just end up with me in a padded room. But... Not being sure of things, and... He thinks I have delusions of grandeur.

Maria: So...

Liz: So, he put me on antidepressants.

Maria: Oh.

Liz: Yeah.

Maria: Wait. Did you have to do any blood work?

Liz: Nope.

Maria: Good, good. We were afraid you might be a little green around the gills.

Liz: Why would you think that?

Maria: Well, after the impressive display of alien mojo last week, I’d think -

Liz: That didn’t happen.

Maria: Lizzie, sweetie? It did.

Liz turned to face her friend. Maria gave her a cautious, concerned look, which only seemed to agitate Liz further.

Liz: No. NO! That’s... See, no, that didn’t happen.

Maria: But, Liz -

Liz grabbed hold of Maria’s face between her palms and went nose-to-nose with her.

Liz: NO! No, it didn’t! I... No! No, no, no!

Maria: Ow, Liz! Hey, you’re hurting me! Liz! Let go of me!

Maria ripped her friend’s hands away from her face and scooted to the very end of the couch. Liz jumped up from her seat and began to pace. She looked over at Maria, whose cheeks were marked with angry red fingerprints, and suddenly snapped out of her denial.

Liz: Oh, my God! Maria! Are you okay?

Maria: Yeah. Yeah, I’m okay. You?

Liz: I... Oh, God. What’s wrong with me? What’s happening to me? Oh, no. No, no, no. Not again. I can’t do this. No. No. No, no, no.

Maria: Okay. Shh. Calm down, okay? You’re right. You’re right. Nothing happened.

Liz leaned against a nearby wall and slid down it to the ground. Once she was flat on the floor, Liz curled up into a ball and began rocking herself, continuing to chant the word ‘no’. Maria huddled over her, cautiously stroking Liz’s hair while wondering what she should do.

Michael: She okay?

Maria: Get Max.

Michael nodded and took off down the hall. Maria held onto Liz a little tighter.

Liz: Max?

Maria: Shh, sweetie, he’s coming.

Maria looked around the hallway and hoped that he would be there soon. Liz only seemed to be responding to Max’s name.

Meanwhile...

Michael waved Max out of his third period class. Max asked for a pass to the bathroom and rushed into the hall.

Max: What is it?

Michael: I don’t know. Liz is having another meltdown.

Max: Damnit. I knew I should have stopped by yesterday.

Michael: What happened?

Max: There’s not enough time right now. I’ll tell you later.

Michael: Maxwell...

Max: Look, later. I promise, okay?

Michael: Fine.

They hurried to the ball that was Liz Parker. Maria backed away, letting Max take her place. Liz curled up in his arms but didn’t make any other movements or sounds.

Maria: Oh, thank God you’re here.

Max: What is it?

Liz: Max?

Maria: She’s flickering again.

Max: Shh. Liz, it’s okay. It’s okay.

Max gently rocked her in his arms, doing his best to conceal the green streaks of power surging through her body. He shrugged out of his flannel shirt and wrapped it around her.

Michael: We’ve gotta get her out of here. The bell’s about to ring.

Maria: We can’t just walk out of school with her again. Someone’s gonna notice.

Michael: You got a better idea?

Max: Yeah. You two keep arguing. In fact, make a scene.

Michael: Are you nuts?

Max: No, listen. We need a distraction.

The door to the lounge swung open, and Isabel and a tall brown-haired girl entered the room.

Isabel: And this is the Student Lounge. End of tour. Questions?

Serena: Yeah, I -

Isabel: Okay. When I said that, I didn’t mean I wanted you to ask me any questions. I’m embarrassed enough to be seen walking around with you. You are so not at my social level. Hey, there’s some people who can be your new best friends. That’s my brother Max, and his nerdy girlfriend Liz.

Serena: But -

Isabel: Max! Hey, Max! I got a new friend for Liz over here!

Max: Isabel, this really isn’t the time.

Isabel: Whatever. Look -

Michael: Isabel! Damnit, would you -

Isabel: This is Serena Hunt.

Maria: Look, we can just make her a part of it. They’ll never know.

Michael: What the hell? Why don’t we put out a fucking ad?

Liz: S-Serena?

Max: What is it, Liz?

Liz: No. No, no, no. NOOO!

Before anyone could do anything to stop her, Liz’s arms had shot out from under Max’s shirt and stretched out toward the new girl. In the blink of an eye, green bolts of power surged out of Liz’s small hands and threw Serena ten feet across the room, only to be stopped by the presence of a hard cement wall.

Isabel: Holy shit.

Chapter Fifty Three

Chapter Fifty Three

The group stood around for a moment, shocked once again by an unexpected display of powers from Liz. Max had carefully lay Liz down on the floor and was tightly clasping her hands in his. Sweat beaded his brow as he worked to absorb the power visibly flowing through her body.

Isabel: We have to do something.

Michael: You got any ideas?

Maria: Yeah. How about you fix her?

Isabel: Who?

Maria: LIZ!

Michael: What about that other chick?

Maria: Chick!?

Isabel was standing propped against the same wall that bore Serena’s body imprint. Maria was headed over towards Michael, physical harm her obvious intention. Max was still holding onto Liz’s hands, but the energy seemed to have dissipated. He quickly caught up on the situation around him and stepped in.

Max: Enough! Michael, go get Tess. Is -

Maria: What!? Why are you bringing that bitch in here?

Michael: Maria!

Max: She can cover this up. Maria, you take care of Liz while I heal that girl.

Michael had already left to retrieve Tess, but Max’s words captured Isabel’s attention. She stood up straighter, only to lightly tap the unconscious girl with the tip of her boot.

Isabel: Max, no!

Max: What?!

Isabel: I-If you heal her, you’ll, uh... connect, you know? Why don’t I try?

Max: Fine. Do it. When you’re done with that, I need you to trip the fire alarm.

Maria: What?

Max: It’ll cover us.

Maria: Yeah. Until they do roll call and think you two are burning in an inferno.

Max: Shit.

Maria: We need something that’ll get us all sent home at once. (pauses) Oh, I’ve got it! The heaters! If the heat’s stuck on ninety degrees, they’ll have to let us out.

Max: Okay. I can take care of that. Just... Watch her for me, okay?

Maria: Sure thing.

Max headed to the room’s thermostat and concentrated on its properties. Once in, he overrode the system, forcing the temperature throughout the school to rise to at least ninety degrees. He wiped the sweat from his forehead and headed back to Liz. Maria quickly got up and went to investigate Isabel’s handiwork. As Maria reached the corner where the two girls were seated, the door flew open, and Michael and Tess rushed in. Tess quickly took in the carnage that surrounded her and looked to Max for an explanation. He was too focused on Liz to notice Tess.

Tess: What the fuck happened here?

Michael: There was an... accident.

Tess: Okay. So what happened that’s got Parker flat on her ass and a body print in that wall?

Isabel: I’m doing my best, okay?!

Tess: What?

Michael: She’s healing her.

Isabel stepped back from Serena, who was looking much healthier than she had a few minutes prior. At a slight elbow to her ribs, Isabel scowled at Maria, but then noticed that the shorter girl was pointing to the human outline in the wall. Isabel stepped forward and worked on returning the wall to its normal shape.

Tess: What happened?

Michael: Liz freaked out and blasted her across the room.

Tess: Great. So now I’ve gotta clean up that bitch’s messes? I don’t think so.

Maria: Hey, shitbrain, if you don’t “clean up” this mess, that girl’s gonna want to know how Liz shot green juice out of her palms and threw her across the room. If you can find a way to explain this that won’t connect Liz to you pod people -

Tess: Fine. What do you want me to do?

Max looked up, finally noticing that other people had entered the room.

Isabel: I left a small bump. Let’s just make her think she was accidentally pushed into the wall.

Max: Sounds good.

Maria: Wow. It’s sweltering in here. Nice work, Max.

Max: Thanks.

Max picked Liz up off of the floor and cradled her in his lap after taking a seat on a couch. Michael plopped down into a nearby armchair, while Maria gathered Liz’s things together.

Liz: Mmm... Max... Hot.

Max: I know, Liz. I know. Just hang on.

The room’s attention turned to the far side of the room, and Michael grudgingly got up from his seat to inspect Isabel’s work. Maria joined the three aliens, surrounding Serena in a semicircle.

Michael: So, what’s the story?

Tess: She got knocked back into a wall and bumped her head.

Michael: Who pushed her?

Tess: Does it matter?

Isabel: Uh, yeah.

Maria: (mutters) Dumbass.

Michael: Whatever. Isabel was closest to her, so it’ll have to be her.

Isabel: I’m. Not. Clumsy.

Michael: I. Don’t. Care. Someone opened the door and pushed you forward, shoving new girl into the wall... gracefully, of course. (rolls eyes)

Isabel: (huffs) Fine. Whatever.

Michael: Can you do that?

Tess: Yeah. No problem.

The door swung open, and the group stiffened as they anticipated more problems.

Kyle: Hey! Here you all are. I’ve been looking all - Holy shit!

Maria: Yeah. She’s doing a mind warp. Kinda looks like she’s on the shitter, huh?

Michael: Maria!

Kyle: Hey, she’s right! But, uh... I meant, did you know Liz was half-naked?

The teens turned to face Max and Liz and expelled a collective gasp. Max was sitting on the couch in the same position as earlier, but Liz was now straddling his lap. She was down to a bra, and her hands were busy trying to pull Max’s A-shirt over his head. Her efforts were impeded by their fused lips, as well as Max’s reluctance to take his hands out from beneath her skirt.

Isabel: Max!

Michael: Hey, Maxwell!

Tess: I knew they were fucking!

Kyle: Wow! When did Evans grow a pair? Michael's bed, the Student Lounge... Remind me not to let them into my car!

Kyle groaned as someone hit the back of his head. Maria was the only one brave enough to approach the pair. She pulled a water bottle out of her backpack and squirted it on them. Max pulled away from Liz’s lips and looked up in disbelief.

Maria: Knock it off, you two!

Max: Huh?

Maria: Max! Cover her up!

Max had the good grace to blush, but Liz continued to kiss his neck and thrust her hips into his.

Maria: Oh, gross! Stop!

Max: Don’t you think I’m trying?

Kyle: Looks like she’s trying to -

Isabel: Don’t! Don’t say it!

Tess let out a disgusted huff of breath as her concentration was shattered yet again.

Tess: I can’t do this with all of you talking.

Max: Fine. We’re all leaving. Meet us in the parking lot after the dismissal.

With that, Max stood up from the couch, holding a writhing Liz to his body, and walked out of the room. Maria and Kyle gave up and burst into loud peals of laughter. Isabel soon joined in, and even Michael couldn’t hide his grin. Tess turned to the group, bewildered.

Tess: Huh?

Maria: Just... Just do your thing, moron. We’re leaving.

P.A.: Attention, Roswell High students. As you have no doubt noticed by now, there has been a malfunction in one of the heating coils. State law requires that we release you from the building. Rest assured, this problem will be fixed by tomorrow. Buses are waiting outside the building. You are dismissed for the remainder of the day.

Maria: Sweet!

*Ahhh... Done with papers, but of course it's a horrible day out. :( Anyhow, is anyone else tempted to lick the screen when they see the little picture Breathless is sporting?

Just curious. Seriously. I mean, I have no idea if my monitor tastes like Windex...

Chapter Fifty Four

The group slowly straggled out into the parking lot, shivering as the December air cooled the sweat on their overheated bodies. They found Liz curled up in the back seat of the Jeep. Max was sitting sideways in the front seat, his legs resting on the edge of his car. He was hunched over, and his face was buried in his hands.

Maria: You okay?

Max: Huh? Oh, uh... Yeah. Yeah, I’m good.

Maria: Good.

Max: Good. Uh...

Tess: Will someone please explain what the fuck is going on around here?

Maria: Things like this never happened before a certain blonde ho arrived in town.

Tess: You talking to me?

Maria: Give the girl a medal. She is more than boobs and aerosol.

Tess: Listen, you little -

Michael: Would you two shut the fuck up?!

Max: Is that girl okay, Is?

Isabel: Yeah. It was just a small bump on her head. That wall was just that crumbly stuff, so it looked worse than it really was.

Kyle: Sheet rock?

Isabel: Sure. Whatever.

Max: And the mind warp?

Tess: She apologized to Isabel for being in her way and took off down the hall.

Alex: You think we should keep an eye on her?

Tess: I do good work.

Alex: I wasn’t saying that you don’t. I just -

Maria walked up to Tess and poked her in her upper arm as she talked. Tess stood there in shock for a moment, but her features quickly turned into a mask of anger.

Maria: Listen, skank, we’re just trying to cover your sorry asses. Excuse us for -

Maria was cut off as Michael pulled her away from Tess. As he did, he made the mistake of putting a hand up over her mouth.

Michael: Damnit, Maria! Your teeth are sharp!

Max: Alex is right. Just... Let’s all agree to watch ourselves when she’s around. Michael, put her down. She’s just gonna keep kicking you. (sighs) Just in case something goes wrong, okay? I mean, are your warps supposed to last for life, Tess?

Tess: Oh. I, uh...

Maria: She doesn’t know! Oh, this is just great.

Max: This thing between you two has to stop. Now. There’s more important stuff.

Tess: Like sticking your tongue down Liz’s throat?

Isabel: That’s not all that’s getting stuck in her throat.

The girls rolled their eyes. Michael and Kyle worked on suppressing their smiles while Max’s face turned a deep shade of red. Alex winced and covered his hands over his ears.

Alex: Oh, gross. That was so wrong.

Michael: Look, this isn’t a good place to discuss this. I can’t afford any new furniture, so we take it to one of your houses or out to the desert.

Maria: Why don’t we go to the quarry anymore?

Michael: Maria, what does that matter... You know, I don’t know why... Max?

Max: I can’t remember, either.

Kyle: Well, let’s go if we’re going. I’ve got practice at six.

They met at the quarry, but Alex, Isabel, and Tess had not arrived yet. Max was seated in the back seat of his Jeep, busy trying to rouse an unconscious Liz. Michael stood outside the car and watched. Maria and Kyle were engaged in a feisty game of ‘rock-paper-scissors’ that had somehow become ‘Maria slaps Kyle’s hand’.

Max: Liz... Liz, can you hear me? (pauses) She’s not waking up.

Michael: She’s breathing though, right?

Max: Yeah.

Michael: Why don’t we wait - Oh. Here they are.

The teens gathered near the Jeep as they waited for the trio to emerge from Alex’s car. Maria stood with a hand on her hip, tapping her foot in obvious impatience.

Maria: What took you guys so long?

Alex: Isabel needed to stop at a convenience store.

Kyle: Ooh. You brought snacks?

Kyle reached toward Isabel’s backpack but was stopped by a slap to the hand.

Isabel: Not for you.

Kyle: Damn! What is it with you girls and violence?

Tess: Can we get down to business?

Max: Yeah. Yeah, let’s get started. Umm... Something’s wrong with Liz, and... She’s...

Isabel: Gone off the deep end?

Maria: Hey, bitch, it’s your fault this happened.

Isabel: What?

Maria: Well, if you two hadn’t kept Max away from her all those years, she probably wouldn’t have been working at the café the day she got shot... They’d have slept together by now for sure, and no one would have any doubts about it.

Isabel: That... Have you and Liz been sharing the same stash?

Maria: Funny.

Max shot Isabel an annoyed glare as he carefully climbed out of the Jeep, while Alex begged Maria with her eyes to give it up.

Maria: (breathes deeply) Listen, she said something went down at your house on Friday?

Max: Yeah... Uh, there was a, umm... a mix-up of sorts... I guess... and, uh... Well...

Isabel: Our parents told Liz’s parents that Max and Liz are doing it.

Maria: (suspiciously) And where did they get that idea?

Isabel: Look. I didn’t say anything directly. My mom just kinda jumped to conclusions, and it spiraled out of control from there.

Alex: But you didn’t do anything to stop it?

Isabel: Well...

Tess crossed her arms across her chest and pouted. Maria noticed and snorted at her antics.

Tess: Does this story have a point?

Maria: Yeah. Whatever the hell happened on Friday... Liz’s parents made her see a psychologist on Saturday, and he put her on some medication ‘cause he said she had illusions of grandeur -

Max: You mean delusions?

Maria: Yeah, that’s what I said. Anyhow, she didn’t get a chance to tell me what he put her on, but she said that he didn’t do any blood work. And I think if Liz was in a better place right now, she’d have checked her blood for green cells or whatever it is you guys have, but she’s obviously not, so someone else is gonna have to look at her blood under a microscope, but not me, ‘cause I just barely passed Biology, and I don’t have any Mr. Wizard science stuff hanging around at home, and I don’t think Mr. Seligman would be happy to see my face back in his lab, so it would probably be best if Max did it if Liz can’t, cause he’s good at that stuff, too, but I’m really worried about the chemicals interacting with -

Michael: I think we’re all worried about that.

Tess: (mumbles) Unreal.

Alex: DeLuca! I think that was a new record for speaking without breathing. I bow to your superhuman breathing capacity. (bows mockingly)

Maria: Oh, God! You don’t think I’m getting super powers, do you? ‘Cause me and Michael never had sex, so I don’t know if you can catch your alien traits through -

Alex: Stop! I don’t want to hear any more about what you and Liz have or haven’t done with those two. God, my brains feel so dirty.

There was a short lull in the conversation as the group struggled to remember what they had been discussing before Maria started talking. Isabel opened her mouth to speak, but she stopped when she heard a rustling sound coming from the Jeep. All eyes turned to the back seat, where Liz was sitting up and stretching out her arms.

Liz: Oh, hey, good morning!

Chapter Fifty Five

Maria was the first to find her voice.

Maria: Uh, Lizzie, honey?

Liz: Hey, Maria!

Maria: Hey... How you feeling?

Liz: Great!

Liz was standing on the back seat of the Jeep, twirling around in small circles. She was twirling her shirt over her head like a lasso. The group stood back, unsure of Liz’s state of mind, and somewhat fearful of her new hobby, blasting people across a room.

Maria: That’s... umm, that’s great. But, uh... Is there any reason you took your shirt off?

Liz: I was hot.

Maria: Right. Well, uh, as great as you look in... that... there’s some guys here that are... uncomfortable... with you dressed like that.

Liz: Don’t be silly. We have to exercise so we can exorcize the evil within. If we’re gonna get sweaty anyways, I may as well start out like this. Okay?

Max stepped forward, approaching the car slowly. He maintained eye contact with her the entire time. What the hell is she thinking?

Max: What do you mean by that?

Liz: Don’t you remember? The evil within? Isabel? You know, what your mom said in the orb on the worst day of my life?

Isabel: I...

Max: Liz, what made you think of that just now?

Liz: I had a dream.

Michael: Oh, Jesus.

Max stopped when he reached the Jeep’s frame. He reached down to release the seat’s lever so he could crawl into the backseat, but Liz surprised him by climbing into the front seat. She settled comfortably in front of him, sitting sideways on the seat and spreading her legs to trap Max between her thighs.

Max: Okay, can you tell us what happened in the dream?

Liz: No.

Tess: I think we have a right to know if -

Michael: Shut up, Tess.

Max: Why can’t you tell us?

Liz: I can only tell you.

Max: Why only me?

Liz leaned forward, wrapping her arms around his neck. She nipped lightly at his earlobe before leaning in close to whisper in his ear.

Liz: ‘Cause you’re the King. Max, make them go away.

He stepped back a bit and turned his head to the group.

Max: Guys, give us some space. That means you, too, Tess, Michael.

The six teens backed away with some resistance, but they kept the duo in sight. All that they could see was the back of Max’s body and Liz’s legs that were wrapped around him.

Liz captured Max in her arms once again and pulled him in for a heated kiss. Just as suddenly, she pulled back and hopped into a kneeling position in her seat. Max looked at her questioningly, but she just smiled at him. She rummaged around in the glove compartment, springing up with a happy sigh when she’d found the object she’d sought.

Max: Liz, what do you need a map for?

Liz: It’s a seeeeeeeeeecret.

Max: You’ve got a lot of secrets today.

Liz: I think you’d look nice in a crown.

Max: Um, okay...

Liz: Shh. Close your eyes.

The group watched in a strange mix of awe and befuddlement as a light green pulse flashed between their bodies. What they couldn’t see were her hands or the map that had become a silvery-blue circle.

Kyle: What the fuck?

Alex: This day is getting weirder and weirder.

Liz placed the crown she’d made on his head and then kissed him lightly.

Liz: Ta-da! Open your eyes.

Max: What? Liz, what is this?

Liz: It’s your crown! See that? (points) That’s a kind of coat of arms... For the royal family.

Max: How do you know that? You made this?

Liz: Uh-huh. Do you like it?

The crown was the same color as the orb they’d dug up earlier in the year. In the center of the crown was the same symbol as on the orb, shining brightly.

Max: I... Yeah, thanks. Umm, how’d you do that?

Liz: (shrugs) I don’t know. I just did.

Max: Liz, that doesn’t make sense.

Liz: I’m telling you the truth! Don’t you believe me?

Max: Yes! Of course, I do. I just... I want to know how...

Liz: Oh. I... I’m sorry. I really don’t know.

Max: It’s okay. Uh... Can you tell me about the dream now?

Liz: Yeah, but I’m hungry.

Max: Okay. I’m gonna go get you a snack. When I get back, you’ll tell me?

Liz: You got it!

Max rushed over to where the group had settled, some sitting on the hood of a car, others standing.

Michael: What’s she doing?

Max: I... I don’t know. She says she’s hungry.

Isabel: Max, no! Get out of my bag!

Max: Liz is hungry. Didn’t you get snacks... earlier?

Michael: What the hell? When did you start smoking?

Isabel: That’s none of your damn business!

Max: Is this why you’ve been such a... crab lately? Do you think the nicotine is reacting funny with our genes?

Isabel: I’m not having this conversation with you. Not right now, not with Liz over there doing a strip tease for Barnum and Bailey. I think there’s more important things to deal with right now.

Michael and Max’s heads whipped around to find Liz grinning and waving her arms about. She was hanging upside down from the Jeep’s roll bar, causing her skirt to fall down over her chest, but exposing her underwear.

Max: Shit. What is wrong with her?

He hurried over to the Jeep, shaking his head. Oh, God, she’s wearing the red panties. Of course she is, she’s wearing the red bra that matches. If we weren’t out here... Shit, now everyone’s seen her in her lingerie. Kyle’s seen her in it. Damnit!

Michael: This isn’t over, Isabel.

Isabel: (snorts) It never is.

The group stood around awkwardly, unsure what to do or say.

Maria: Okay, boys, it’s time to turn away.

Kyle: C’mon, it’s like free porn!

Alex: With your friend’s girlfriend? That’s messed up.

Kyle: It’s the principle. A naked chick is a naked chick.

Alex: Even a fat one?

Maria: Chick?!

Alex: Or a hairy one?

Maria: If you don’t turn around right now, I’m gonna throw you over that cliff.

Kyle: Wow. That’s some threat. I’m sure you could pick me up and drag me over there. I’ve got forty pounds on you, easy.

Maria: Fine. I may not be able to drag your sorry ass over there, but I bet Max wouldn’t have a problem doing it.

Kyle: Point taken.

Alex: (under breath) Pussy.

Maria: Hey, Tess, you gonna watch her all day? You into girls now?

Tess: What?

Maria: Stop watching her. If we ignore her, she might stop.

Alex: I don’t think she cares whether anyone’s watching. I’m not sure she even knows that anyone is here at all.

Kyle: I’m worried about her.

Maria: We all are.

Back at the Jeep...

Max: Liz! You can’t just take your clothes off like this! And... My Jeep isn’t... isn’t a playground.

Liz: (pouts) But I’m hot! And bored! And hungry! Where’s my snack?

Max: She didn’t have anything to eat.

Her playful mood disappeared immediately. She swung up into a seated position, resting briefly on the roll bar before plopping down in the back seat. Liz crossed her arms across her chest and turned her face away from Max.

Liz: Fine. Take me home.

Max: What?

Liz: You heard me. I want to go home.

Max: But...

Liz: Cut the shit, Max. I wanna go home. Now.

Max: What if -

Meanwhile...

Kyle: Is it safe to turn around yet?

Maria: Let me check. (looks) Oh, Christ. It’s worse than before.

They all turned to look after hearing Maria’s words. All could see the bewilderment on Max’s face at Liz’s erratic behavior. Everyone but Maria and Tess burst into laughter.

Tess: This isn’t funny.

Maria: I hate to say it, but the bitch is right. This isn’t like Liz at all.

Alex: Maybe they oughtta up her dosage...

Maria: She just started them on Saturday!

Alex: Yeah... Well, it doesn’t look like they’re working.

In the Jeep...

Liz lifted up on her knees and thrust her tongue deeply into his mouth to stop Max’s protests. He kissed her back, getting lost in her arms until the sound of laughter broke him out of his stupor. Max then climbed into the back seat with her to give them some privacy.

Max: Liz, cut it out.

Liz: (pouts) Don’t you want me?

Max: I...

Liz: (sniffles) You don’t?

Max: That’s not... Fuck. Of course I want you, Liz.

Liz: Let’s get out of here, then.

Her hand suddenly slipped into the front of Max’s jeans. She grabbed his hardening cock and began squeezing it.

Max: But... No. No, Liz. We need to... mmm... figure out what’s wrong with you.

Liz: I know what’s wrong.

Max: Y-You do?

Liz: Yup.

Max grabbed onto her forearm, intending to stop her motions. Instead, he found himself guiding her hand’s rhythm.

Max: Would you... ahh... mind sharing?

Liz: Only if you kiss me.

Max: Lizzz...

Liz: Just one kiss and I’ll tell you.

Max sighed and leaned into her. He lightly touched his lips to hers, but Liz used her free hand to pull his head towards hers. She plunged her tongue into his mouth, moaning loudly and matching her tongue’s thrusts to her hand’s motions.

Max: (gasps) That was... uhh... more than one kiss.

Liz: So?

Max: Liz... We can’t do this here.

He reluctantly pulled her hand out of his pants and grasped it firmly in his own.

Max: (sighs) Will you tell me what’s wrong now?

Liz: Okay. (whispers) I’m horny.

Max: Damnit, Liz, that’s not what’s wrong!

Liz: Yes, it is!

She took advantage of his tight grip on her hand. Liz maneuvered his hand so that two of his fingers were pointing out while the others were curled into her hand and quickly brought his hand under her skirt. She pushed her underwear aside with her free hand and brought his fingers to her wet pussy lips. He groaned but didn’t pull his hand back.

Liz: This is what you do to me. Don’t tell me it’s wrong to want you inside me.

Max: (groans) I...

Liz: Take me away from here, Max.

Max: I can’t, Liz We - Oh!

Liz’s grip on his hand had loosened as Max plunged his fingers into her body. She coated her fingers in her wetness and brought them up to Max’s lips. He opened his mouth immediately and sucked her fingers into it.

Liz: There’s plenty more where that came from.

Max: Uhh...

Liz: Start the car, Max.

Max could only nod as Liz climbed over into the passenger seat. He carefully climbed into the front seat and turned the ignition. They sped out of the quarry. In their wake were six angry, confused teenagers.

Kyle: Was it something we said?

Chapter Fifty Six

Max tossed Liz’s shirt at her once they were on the main road, but she only grinned at him before throwing it out of the car. She turned in her seat and waved it goodbye.

Max: Liz, was that even your shirt?

Liz: Huh? Oh, umm, I don’t know.

Max: Well, I think you need to cover up before someone sees you on the road.

Liz: But I’m hot! (pauses) Besides, I’m just getting ready.

Max: For?

Liz: Don’t be so silly, King Max! You need to give me a thorough check-up to make sure there’s no evil within!

Max: Liz, what does that mean, exactly?

Liz: Well, I was trying to be clever, but I meant that I want you to fuck me.

Max: LIZ! I got that part.

Liz: Okay.

Max: What was that dream you had about?

Liz: Can we talk about it later? I’m getting really hot, Max.

He looked over and was surprised to see that sweat was beading down Liz’s body. She was breathing shallowly, and her head was lolling around at the top of her seat. Max turned the car off the road and drove almost a half of a mile into the desert before pulling to a stop. No sense in giving anyone a show.

Max turned the car off and undid his buckle. As he moved to get out of the Jeep, he was stopped by a hand squeezing his upper thigh. Max had expected to need to heal Liz, so he was rather surprised to find her leaning towards him with a highly aroused gaze. He reached for the hand on his leg, but she was too fast for his confused mind. Before he had realized what she’d done, Liz had pulled his shirt up his chest and was licking the contours of his abdomen. Max opened his mouth to protest, but his words instead came out a moan as Liz undid his pants. When she tugged at his hips, Max lifted them so she could pull his jeans and boxers down.

This is wrong. We need to... Find help for Liz. I... Focus! Liz needs to... (moans) To... get off, too. Yeah.

Max made several half-hearted efforts to stop Liz, but her mouth was a force to be reckoned with. She was twisting her hands in opposite directions around the length of his cock, but her mouth was focused only on the head. He ran his hands through her hair, caressing her head as her lips and tongue brought him pleasure. Max let out a cry as she loosened her mouth’s hold, and without thought, his hands pressed down on her head while his hips lifted from the seat.

Max: God, Liz. Please. I...

He got a sudden inspiration and dropped his hand to the side of his seat to recline it. The seat threw back, taking him with it. Max quickly grabbed Liz’s hips and pulled them toward his head. Liz let out a shocked squeal as her body was turned upside down. She caught on quickly, returning her attention to his cock as Max pawed at her underwear. He began to pull her panties down her legs, stopping when he realized that he’d have to lift her to remove them. Knowing that any major movement on his part would probably result in the removal of Liz’s mouth from his body, Max rushed to rip the cloth from her body. The lace wouldn’t budge, but it only took a brief moment of clarity for him to realize that he could use his powers to take them off. He sliced open the sides and tossed the material over his head with a happy cry of success.

Max pulled her body closer to his head, positioning her until her inner thighs were flanking his ears. Liz’s legs bent and wrapped around the back of the headrest. She continued to suck and lick Max’s cock, but the strength of her suction decreased as she got lost in the feelings Max was evoking.

He took no time to tease her, as Max wanted her to feel pleasure as much as he wanted to feel his own. He wet his tongue and pushed it out of his mouth as he approached Liz’s lower lips. With his head at a slight angle, Max ran his tongue through the center of her lips, using his mouth to coax her pussy open. His tongue swept upwards in a slow, deliberate lick that ended with a hard twist into her body. Deeper and deeper he plunged, twisting and turning his tongue and occasionally slipping down to lave her hardened clitoris.

Liz got caught up in the pleasure Max was providing her, and, letting out a loud moan, his dick slipped from her mouth. She wriggled her hips as she tried to get him to focus more on her neglected nerve center, but he firmly grabbed her thighs and stopped her movements. It was sometime after Max had trapped her lower body in the vice of his arms that Liz’s attention was once again drawn to his forgotten cock. A muscle contracted in his pelvis, making his erection spring upwards, only to hit Liz on the chin on the rebound. She stifled a laugh, still greatly intrigued by the workings of the male anatomy.

Afraid to be mistaken for a giggling schoolgirl, Liz opened her mouth and once again enclosed his thick shaft inside. Max groaned against her wet flesh. Liz felt a flash of triumph at the noise and returned to her task with a renewed vigor. She took in as much of his length as she could and pressed the swollen head up against the silky smoothness at the back of her throat. The tip of her tongue flicked rapidly against and around his cock. Max’s lips and tongue had all but stopped moving, but Liz continued to moan around the penis residing in her mouth. His hips lifted toward her, gently, but let her know that more movement would be appreciated.

She began bobbing her head up and down, one hand firmly grasping the base of his cock while the other lightly caressed his tightening balls. Liz could feel that his orgasm was coming soon, and so she eased back a bit, allowing only the head of his dick to remain in her mouth. Her hand tightly stroked the exposed flesh, but her mouth was doing what would soon drive him to climax. She sucked at him in tandem with the strong heartbeat she could feel pulsing against her lips. Liz flicked her tongue at the sensitive ridge, occasionally sneaking up to lick away the fluid that was liberally oozing out. As she felt his cock swell in her palm, Liz returned her hand to rest against his pelvis while her mouth followed down as far as possible. Max’s head fell back as he came in her mouth. He was buried so far in her mouth that the sticky fluid washed right down Liz’s throat. It was only when his erection began to shrink that Liz got a taste of the cum that lingered on his flaccid skin.

He closed his eyes and, with an enormous amount of effort, brought an arm up to rest over his forehead. With the removal of one of his arms, Liz was effectively released from his clamp-like arms, and she started to slide forward. She threw up her arms just in time to stop her face from colliding with the steering wheel. Max was jarred from his sated rest by the insistent beeping of a horn. His eyes flew open to find Liz trying to pull herself up, using the steering wheel as leverage.

Max: What are you doing?

Liz: Trying not to lose any teeth.

Max: What?

Liz: My legs fell asleep.

Max: Oh. I... Here. Let me help you.

Liz: Thanks.

With greater difficulty than he had imagined, Max finally managed to turn Liz around. She rested her head in the crook of his neck, the rest of her body draped over his.

Liz: Well, that was an adventure.

Max: It’s not over yet.

*Sorry it's been a while. I had this chapter and half of another finished earlier this week, but they had a most unfortunate accident. Meaning, Jen didn't back anything up and a thunderstorm knocked the power out of the house and the chapter out of the computer. Anyway, rewriting a sex scene isn't so great when you're not... "in the mood," let's say. ::Yes. Very clever, Jen. They'll never see through your subtle innuendos. Excellent! ::

On that note, I'm gonna go drown myself in a glass of milk and half a package of Oreos.

Chapter Fifty Seven (a)

Chapter Fifty Seven (a)

Liz lifted her head lazily to search Max’s eyes, hoping that he meant to return the favor and also fearing that he had remembered what they were supposed to be talking about. His hands roamed over her back and shoulders, and his eyes were barely open. Liz looked beyond his eyes and couldn’t help the chuckle that erupted.

Max: What?

Liz: I... It... You...

Max: What is it? Is something wrong?

In response, Liz wiggled around until she managed to drag an arm up to his head. She grabbed the crown from atop his head and placed it on her own. Max couldn’t help but smile at the picture she presented. Her breasts were spilling out of her bra, her skirt was bunched around her waist, and she was wearing a crown that was too big for her head. Liz was now trying to feign a royal air, but the effect was somewhat lessened by the way the trinket dipped down over her right eyebrow.

Liz: How do I look?

Max: Umm...

Liz: Now, I’m the Queen! Bow before me, all ye lesser beings.

Max: Well, technically -

Liz: Oh, silly me. I need my royal scepter. Where did I put it?

Max could only shrug his shoulders in response. The non-committal motion was his best, and most frequent, answer to her incessant questions. Max, along with everyone who surrounded Liz, was never quite sure where she was heading with her conversation.

Liz crawled up his body, leaning over him to search the back seat for her lost treasure. Max’s face was smooshed between her breasts while she bobbed to and fro. I’ve got a royal scepter for you, and I know a good place to put it.

As she leaned over him a bit more, her knee landed heavily on Max’s upper thigh, narrowly missing his groin. His attention was brought back to the matter at hand by the reminder of his anticipated bodily injury. Damnit! We’re supposed to be talking!

Max: Liz?

Liz: Not now, Max. I need to find my magic wand.

Max: Umm...

Liz: No! Not magic, majestic! Yes, that’s what I meant!

She hopped over into the passenger side and began rooting around underneath the seat. Max tried once again to gain her attention.

Max: Liz. Liz!

Liz: What is it now? Can’t you see that I’m busy?

Max: Look. This has to stop. Now.

Liz: (pouts) But I want it back! It was part of a matching set!

Max: You... You’ve gotta help me out here, Liz. I... Maria said you went to see a doctor on Saturday?

Liz: Yup.

Max: And...?

Liz: And now I’m taking little magic pills so I won’t hear the radio anymore.

Max: What? Why can’t you - What?

Liz: This is boring. I thought we were gonna fuck.

Max: (choking) I...

Liz: But, if we’re not gonna do it, can’t you at least finish what you started? I mean, I finished what I started, even though you were wearing a crown on your head. Which, by the way, looks totally better on me. But, if I’m the queen, I suppose I should look better. I mean, if Isabel is a princess, and she always looks good, then I have to look at least better than she does. And now that I’ve got some powers, I can look good, too. No more wrinkles in my clothes! No more stains! Wow, I should open a dry cleaning store. What will I name it? Hmm, how about Liz’s Laundry? That’s alliteration, you know! But that’s kind of plain. I’ll have to think about it for a while. Do you have any ideas, Max? Why don’t we go into business together? That would be -

Max’s hand clamped down over her mouth and turned Liz to face him. He looked into her eyes, starting a faint connection. But it was enough. Max was in and out in just a few minutes, and he regained his awareness just as Liz started to fall into his body. He sat her in her seat, sighing as he realized that he’d been doing this far too often lately. He then dug his backpack out of the backseat of the Jeep and pulled out a gym t-shirt. Max quickly sniffed the shirt and found it to be acceptably clean, so he pulled it over Liz’s head and tugged it down her torso. He buckled her in and adjusted his jeans and belt. Max released a heavy sigh and started the car. He had a plan.

*I know it's not much, but I'm in a bit of a funk, I guess you could say. Don't you just hate it when you've been typing for what seems like forever, and then you go to post, and it's like, nothing??? Anyway, thanks for all of your feedback and stuff. Sorry for provoking early stage dementia...

By the way, Dee, I did see your original post. I believe it went a little something like this:

MamaDee52:
Oh, Jen, my dear, I would love to come to your house and do your dishes!
But, then, I tend to be rather liberal in my translations. :) Anyhow, I dunk, but I have a method so that the cookie is neither too crunchy or too soggy. And no, I don't share. I'm mean like that.

Chapter Fifty Seven (b)

The group stood with their backs to the dust Max’s jeep had kicked up in his haste to get away from the quarry. As the dust settled, the teens turned one by one to face each other. No one made eye contact, and neither Kyle nor Alex could find a quip to break the awkward tension in their midst.

Maria loudly cleared her throat, hoping the small noise would be enough to prompt conversation, even if it were just someone admonishing her for coughing with her mouth open. Which is pointless, ‘cause Max and Liz are the only ones who’d do something like that. I can just see Michael quoting Emily Post and trying to browbeat good manners into me. She snorted.

Isabel: So... Are we supposed to just stand around here and wait for them to come back?

Maria: God knows how long that could be.

Alex: Huh?

Maria: I just... uh, well... you know...

Kyle: Apparently, our fearless leader isn’t a one-pump chump.

Isabel: Oh, gross.

Tess grew more and more irritated with every inane tidbit the group revealed. She paced behind the assembled group, unknowingly sharing a habit with Liz. Of course, if Tess had witnessed the brunette walking in such a manner, she would undoubtedly look down on her actions, unconscious of her own habit.

Tess: This is just great. That bitch can’t control her powers and is causing problems. And what does he do? Fix them? Try to find an answer? Ohh, no! He’s too busy fucking her to care that she blasted someone into a wall today!

Maria whirled around to face the shortest hybrid. She marched over to Tess and was practically nose-to-nose with the girl. Both girls flinched, both thinking of how unfortunate a sneeze would be at that particular moment. Each took a step back. Maria stood with a hand on her hip, while Tess crossed her arms just under her breasts.

Maria: Hey! It’s not her fault that she’s got powers!

Tess: Yeah, well, that’s just one more example of Max thinking with his dick. He never should have -

Kyle, Michael: Tess!

Michael nodded at Alex, then towards Maria. No fucking way I’m holding her back again. It was unlikely that she would bite her friend. Alex came to stand behind Maria and jammed his hands into the front pockets of her jeans. He then nodded at Michael, who eased his way in between the two adversaries.

Tess: I was just saying that -

Michael put his hand up and sent a scowl in Tess’ direction.

Michael: We all know what you were gonna say, but I think you’d better zip it. You’re lucky DeLuca doesn’t have powers, or you’d be dead by now.

Maria: Damn straight!

Maria made an effort to lunge at Tess, but she had to stop as her motion sent her center of gravity off. Her top half was quickly headed for the dirt, but Michael grabbed her by the shoulders and leaned her back against Alex.

Alex: As much as I’d like to watch yet another cat fight between these two, don’t you think we should at least try to... I don’t know... figure out what the hell is going on?

Kyle: Yeah, unless you two are gonna wear teeny bikinis and roll around in the mud, your kind of fighting isn’t all that entertaining.

Isabel: (tsks) Valenti!

Kyle’s head whipped around to face Isabel, who promptly sent a small energy burst towards his chest.

Kyle: What? (turns) Ow! Hey, what was that for?

Isabel: Hmm. Not into S & M, I guess.

Kyle: Damn! My nipple burns like a bitch!

Alex: Huh?

Kyle: Hey! Wait, wait, wait. Did you just say -

Michael: Shut up!

Kyle: I was just -

Michael: You want another zap?

Kyle’s face turned to watch his feet, seeming to be highly interested in the rock he was standing on. He mumbled something that no one could understand and lightly rubbed his tender nipple.

Tess: We have to find them.

Maria: You’d love that, wouldn’t you?

Tess: What?

Maria: Interrupting their fun.

Michael: Okay. Enough. I think we all know that you’ve got the market cornered on interrupting Max and Liz.

Alex: He’s got a point.

Maria stomped down on Alex’s foot.

Maria: Whose side are you on?!

Michael: Shut the fuck up! All of you! This is what we’re gonna do. Maria and Alex, you drive around and try to find Maxwell.

Alex: Aww. Why us?

Michael: If Liz is in any state of undress... which she seems to be all the time lately... you two would be... she’d be most comfortable with you two seeing her like that.

Maria: Fine. Let’s go, Alex.

Alex pried his fingers back out of Maria’s pants, flexing them in an effort to regain feeling.

Alex: If I didn’t know better, I’d think you’d painted those on.

Maria: Alex! I’m bloated!

Alex: Aww, shit...

Kyle: Great. So that leaves my car for the rest of us.

Alex sent him a grateful look for the reprieve, but Kyle barely noticed.

Michael: What? Damnit! (pauses) Maria, you drive with Alex.

Maria: Is that your subtle way of asking to drive my car?
Michael: No. I’m telling you. You go with Alex.

Alex’s shoulders slumped, knowing that they were in for yet another scene. He shuffled over to Kyle, not wanting to be within striking distance of a flailing arm.

Alex: Oh, geez... Here it comes.

Kyle: Any second now.

Maria surprised them, though, by twirling a finger in her hair and swinging her hips as she walked over to a wary Michael.

Maria: Wow. I’ve never seen you so... authoritative, Spaceboy. It’s... kind of a turn on.

Isabel: Barf.

Michael: (suspicious) It is?

Maria: Oh, yeah. I mean, yeah, now I know what Liz means.

She had reached Michael, and Maria began running a finger lazily over his chest.

Alex: Huh?

Kyle: You got me, man.

Michael: And what does Liz mean?

Maria: Oh... just... you know... that, uh... power... It’s... erotic.

Her finger made its way to his lips as Maria pressed the length of her body up against his. Michael stiffened at first, but then relaxed into her soft body.

Michael: Yeah?

Maria: Uh huh. And, uh... You know what they say about guys who take control...

Michael: What’s that?

Maria: They forget to cover their balls.

With that said, Maria jerked her knee up into Michael’s crotch and jumped back from him. She ignored the choking noises coming from Michael’s throat, as well as the sympathetic groans that came from Kyle and Alex. Maria grabbed Alex’s hand and headed toward their cars.

Alex got in his car and drove off, Maria close behind him. She stopped near Michael and rolled down her window.

Maria: (cheerily) Later, numbnuts!

Chapter Fifty Eight

Chapter Fifty Eight

Liz found herself floating in the pink-tinted plasma once again. She curled in on herself, hugging her knees to her forehead. Nothing made sense to her in this place. Am I dead? I’m not breathing...

The jellied substance obscured her true surroundings. Liz knew where her arms were, could feel them extend from her shoulders, but she was unable to find them without that point of origin. All that she perceived came to her in blurry shadows, always with the pinkish hue on the periphery. She brought her hand toward her head to run her fingers through her hair, and she was unpleasantly surprised by the result of her action. Her hand knocked into her face, having missed its mark. Her nose throbbed as if she’d been punched in the face.

*Ow! Damnit.*

She was slow to react, almost as slow as her sluggish body movements. Unthinking, Liz brought her other hand up to soothe the pain that had been inflicted. Once again, her hand made unexpected contact with her face, this time hitting her in the eye. The tears that had been threatening, if only in automatic reaction to a blunt jab in the nose, burst from her eyes as Liz gave in to her pain and fear. Where am I? Oh, God, I don’t want to die. I... I still don’t know what’s going on, and Max... I’m not sure if he knows that I didn’t betray him. I... Please.

*Please! Can anyone hear me?! I need to go back to him. Max... he needs me.*

Her body once again curled in on itself, and Liz took what little comfort she could in the soothing rocking motions her body made. Suddenly, she became aware of another presence. Something was tugging at the back of her mind and was trying to calm her.

*Who’s there? Why can’t I see you? Where am I?*

A bright pulse of light attracted her attention, bright enough to penetrate the cocoon she’d buried her head in. Liz raised her head and drew in a deep, unnecessary breath at the sight. Hovering before her was Max’s seal. Hesitantly, Liz moved towards it, following a glowing, rope-like path. The closer she got to the floating symbol, the more at ease Liz felt. She looked beyond the sign and shivered. The seal was protecting her, Liz was sure of it. There was something out there, outside of her pink hiding spot, and it was pure evil. She rushed towards the seal and sobbed in relief as she felt the comfort it had been trying to offer her. She felt a push at the back of her mind and automatically responded. Liz touched the triangle in the middle of the symbol and got pulled into a flash.

*~*

She couldn’t clearly see the figures before her, but Liz quickly realized that the voices she was hearing belonged to her and Max.

Liz: You know, I, uh... I’ve been sick.

Max: I’d noticed.

Liz: Is this normal?

Max: Nothing about this... me is normal.

Liz: You know that’s not what I meant.

Max: But it’s the truth.

Liz: I don’t know how to convince you that your... you being not normal is just a part of why you’re so special. You... I love you, Max. And... It hurts me when you think so little of yourself like this. I mean, I love you with everything that’s in me... What does it say about me... if my loving you isn’t enough?

Max: I know how much you love me. That was never an issue.

Liz: Do you?

Max: I -

Liz: Give me your hand.

Max: What?

Liz: Here. Put your hand here, Max. (pauses) This... this right here... This is not normal. But you... Max, there’s life in your hands. I... I’d be dead if it weren’t for you.

Max: Liz...

Liz: So... I know... that you don’t know a lot about what you are... but... Can’t you, like, feel deep inside? You know, to maybe figure out if this is gonna be our normal?

Max: It’s just so damn frustrating, Liz. I mean, I don’t know anything. I don’t even know who I am.

Liz: That’s not true. Max, you know who you are... You may not fully understand what you are, but... No. You know who you are, Max Evans. And if you ever forget, I’ll be there to remind you.

Max: So...

Liz: So... Try, Max. I mean, wouldn’t we know by now if this was gonna be a complete disaster? It doesn’t feel wrong to me.

Max: I hate that this is hurting you.

Liz: I know.

Max: And... I don’t know how... I don’t understand what’s going on. Not really. I don’t know what’s normal or not, what’s right or wrong...

Liz: I don’t blame you.

Max: You should.

Liz: Damnit! You can’t just take it all on yourself, Max. Neither of us knew what would happen. It had never been done before... How could you possibly know the outcome? You -

Max: I should have known!

Liz: Do you ever regret it?

Max: I know I should, but... Never. Not once, Liz.

Liz: Me, either.

Max: We’ll find answers, okay?

Liz: Yeah. I know. I just... This doesn’t feel completely right, but...

Max: It doesn’t feel wrong.

Liz: Right.

*~*

Ava: You’ve been changed.

Liz: What do you mean?

Ava: You’re not the same as you were.

Liz: I don’t understand.

Liz knew innately that she was dealing with Ava, not Tess.

Ava: Put your hand over that spot... Where he healed you. (pauses) You feel that?

Liz: I... I’m not sure.

Ava: It’s there. You just gotta know what to look for.

Liz: And what is it that I’m looking for?

Ava: I can’t tell you that. No one else can, either. Max... He oughtta be able to, but... No. You’re on your own for this one.

Liz: But I need help!

Ava: You got help all around you. Just ‘cause you can’t see it don’t mean it’s not there.

Liz: I don’t -

Ava: I know, I know. But... You gotta try.

Liz: Can’t you help at all? Some kind of clue? I don’t know what to do!

Ava: You can start by waking up.

Liz: Huh?

*~*

The Jeep jerked to a stop, and Liz was thrust back into awareness. Her eyes snapped open as she noticed her surroundings.

Liz: Max?

Max: I’m sorry. I just...

Liz: Did I pass out again?

Max: Uh... Kinda.

Liz: What are we doing here?

Max: There might be answers here.

Liz: I see.

Max: I’m just worried about you, Liz.

Liz: I know.

Max: Are you okay with this?

Liz: I... Yeah. I was just wondering why we stopped coming here, too.

Max: I can’t remember.

Liz: Hmm... Well, let’s go.

*This part of the story is in early December, so we're moving towards Christmas and that episode. But, as I've said before, I intend to finish in line with the second season. So... I don't know. Maybe you'll figure it out, maybe you won't. I'm dropping hints, but... I know that some of you are going nuts and maybe want to (or are) giving up on the story, but I think that you're better off not knowing.

I also want to thank all of you for your feedback. Some of your guesses have made me stop to reconsider my plot. (But never fear, I resist temptation well... Except for when cookies are involved.) Other notes have helped me to "clarify" some things. At least, as clear as things get in this story. It's remarkably clear on my end of things, but... Yeah. I'm having difficulty completing my thoughts, which means it's time to hit the hay. That's right, I live in a barn.
