Part 20
It’s amazing how after a party, people always manage to disappear. I mean, I guess that’s the point of the end of the party, but still. No one seems bothered that someone has to pop all the balloons and stuff the streamers in garbage bags, while everyone else noisily ambles home. I would have helped, had I had hands.
On the bright side, Nasedo seemed to have vanished with the rest of the crowd
Liz sighed as she swept the fallen crepe paper into a pile in the middle of the room.
“I just don’t understand it…” she muttered to herself. “ Why would Tess be buying Alex a ticket to Las Cruces? She obviously mind-warped us all into believing it was an airline ticket that was delivered- and right when everyone would see it too. But why? Why bother with Sweden at all? Why does she want to send him away?”
The bell jingled and she looked up, startled. What should have been a middle-aged man head but had taken on a very un-middle-aged me appearance peered in.
“Liz? You wanted to talk?”
“Max…” Liz said, in that soft voice that always made me melt. “I thought you had forgotten, you know, and left with-”
“Tess? No. I was just helping my mother load Isabelle’s gifts in the car.” Liz smiled to herself, obviously thinking ‘what a swell guy’… or something to that effect. Maybe less leave-it-to-beaver sounding.
“Oh…” This was said in a less dull way than I would have liked, more in the tone that Liz uses when she is faintly and often pleasantly surprised by something. It was something I used to hear a lot, I’ve got its intonation memorized.
Like when I made her glow.
“Liz? Is something wrong?”
“No, well yea, well… it’s about Tess.” Nasedo’s eyes flashed for a second, and the hand that remained on the door glowed as the door clicked- I’d bet my bone it was locked. Liz didn’t notice, her back was facing him as she tried to manouver a trash bag so she could sweep the rubbish into it.
“Here, let me.” Nasedo’s body was flush against her back as he gently took the bag from her hands. She closed her eyes for a second, like she was savoring the moment. She straightened up, and he did too but didn’t step away. I growled.
“Max, you don’t have to…”
“I know.” He waved his hand and suddenly the bag was full, the floor spotless, the balloons gone. He smiled at her, and she returned the favor. I was dying inside. How was it possible that she didn’t know it wasn’t me? But then, how could she know? He was saying all the right things, making all the right moves. It was crushing.
She arched her neck to one side as he practically nuzzled her ear. Who would have thought Nasedo capable? I was growling pretty ferociously, but for some reason, no one pays attention to the dog.
“What was it about Tess you wanted to ask?” he whispered in her ear. Her eyes hardened and took on the business-time look. She turned to face him, escaping his clutches, but was this really better? Would I rather have her semi-seduced by him or divulging all the secrets she had uncovered to him so that he could blast her to smithereens?
“Max, are you sure you can – ELMO NO!”
Nasedo cried out in pain as I sunk my teeth into his calf.
“NO Elmo! No! Ohmygod, Max, are you alright, I’m so sorry! No Elmo! Bad!” She scooped me up and shut me in the bathroom. I whimpered and whined, lying on the floor so I could see out of the crack under the door.
“ I can’t believe he bit you Max, you know it’s so unlike him, he never bites, ever… I don’t know what got into him!” Nasedo was clutching his leg, his eyes screwed up in pain. Personally, I thought he was over reacting. I barely grazed him, his leg was a lot smaller than it looked- a lot smaller than mine was. Having balls of static electricity hurled at you is far more painful, I’m sure of it.
“Max, are you bleeding? You’d better let me see, I’ll get the first aid kit…”
“No, Liz, it’s fine-”
“It’s not fine Max, you’ve got blood on your hands, that’s serious, let me see-”
“No Liz, don’t-”
“Just let me look.” She insisted, reaching forward to pull up the material of his pants and examine the damage. At that second, he leaned forward and his lips found hers.
The world stood still for a second.
