Part 18
Max blinked awake and smiled at the dream he'd had. Liz had been there with him. She had been in perfect health and not lying on a hospital bed dying.
Stretching his body to relieve his stiff muscles, he was surprised to find himself in no pain whatsoever.
How odd.
Max slowly checked his limbs, flexing them, then mentally seeking any discomfort inside his body.
Nope. No pain.
Even his concussion seemed to have disappeared.
How strange. He seemed to have literally healed overnight.
Slowly, he sat up in bed then stood up, his feet slightly wobbly on the floor from lying in bed so long. Max headed for the bathroom to relieve himself. Standing before the mirror whilst washing his hands, he stared at his dishevelled reflection. He badly needed a shave, and to top it off he had bed head.
Max continued to stare into the mirror then widened his eyes when he realised what he saw, or rather, what he didn't see.
Well I'll be damned.
No bruises or cuts marred his now flawless skin. He was perfectly normal.
An unease slowly settled into his soul. Something that chilled his soul.
Liz.
Max quickly found his clothes in the closet and changed into them double time. Hurrying into Liz's room, his eyes widened once more in alarm.
The bed was empty. The covers thrown back and rumpled.
Where was she? Where had she gone?
Running down the hall to reception, he saw a night nurse still on duty.
"Excuse me, nurse? do you know where Liz Parker has gone? did she get transferred to another room?"
The nurse clicked on the keyboard.
"Miss Parker hasn't been transferred. In fact, she should still be in her room." The night nurse lowered her specs and looked above them at Max. "Which is where you should be young man. Why are you dressed? you should be in bed resting."
"She's not there now." Max pointed out ignoring her chastising comment.
The nurse quickly stood up. "What!"
"She's not in her room. Go see for yourself."
The nurse hurried to Liz's room to find it still empty.
"But how can this be? no one has been in or out since its past visiting hours, and all patients are in their rooms.... unless....." The nurse hesitated.
"Unless what?" Max demanded, agitated. Something was niggling in the back of his mind, but he didn't know what that something was. Only a feeling of something big about to happen if he didn't find Liz, and soon.
The nurse looked at Max then back at the empty bed. She knew Max and Liz had been brought in under..... special conditions.
"Unless if this is the way she's suppose to leave earth. I don't know if you already know, but was 'special'"
"I know what she is."
"Liz was already fading into thin air. Maybe she's...."
Max shook his head. "No. She's still here.... somewhere. I can feel it, feel her. Are you sure you didn't see her leave?"
The nurse nodded her head.
"Are you 100% positive? You didn't leave for even a minute, even for a small break?"
The nurse hesitated. "Uh, I might have accidentally dozed off for a while during the night."
Max swore.
That could have been the moment Liz had left the hospital. And if Liz was an angel, she'd probably have magical powers to hide her presence from the outside world.
The niggling feeling in his mind grew stronger. Something that Liz had said in the dream.... if it had indeed been a dream, which he now doubted it was.
Max's eyes widened as the thought struck him.
'The sunrise awaits for me'
There was one place Liz loved to go to and that was the cliffs.
Max rushed out of the hospital and spotting a cab driving past, whistled for it to stop then dashed after it.
He just hoped he wasn't too late in reaching Liz.
TBC!!
