Part 21

I start to throw some clothes into an overnight bag along with my diary. I can’t believe I just stood up to my dad like that. His attitude hurts me but I don’t see how I could have reacted any differently. We have a war to prepare for and I don’t have time to put up with this crap.

I wonder if he’s told mom or if he’ll wait till morning. It will break her heart I’m sure. In a few weeks when we are able to tell them the truth will it make a difference? I can only hope so.

I sit down on the side of my bed and calm myself down enough to form a connection with Max. I suppose I could use the phone but this is just so much better and of course a little practice never hurt anyone.

Hey did I wake you?

No. I was just lying here thinking of you.

He has a way with words doesn’t he?

What’s wrong? I could feel how upset you were earlier but didn’t want to step in unless you asked me.

I….I had a fight with my dad. I need a place to stay. Can I come over there?

Of course you can. Do you want me to pick you up now?

I was going to leave in the morning but I’m so angry right now that I really need to get out of here. I look down at my hands and see that they are starting to crackle as green light passes through them. I definitely need to leave now.

Please Max.

-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_

Max agreed that it would be best if we slept in his bead together, emphasizing the word sleep of course. He is still not ready to take that next step but wants us to be close.

“Are you ok with that pillow?” he asks. I am already in is bed but he is pacing back and forth .

“Yes,” I reply.

“What about the blanket. Is it enough, do you need another?”

“Max, this is New Mexico. One blanket is more than enough.”

“Anything else you need?” he asks. He is still pacing nervously.

“Max, stop mothering me,” I yell is desperation as I pull the sheets back on his side for him indicating he should get in, “I’m starting to think that your stalling or something.” I say as I roll my eyes.

“Stalling? Me? Of course not,” he says as he takes his pants off and throws them on the chair beside the bed. He is now standing in only his boxers and I take an admiring look at his chest and lick my lips as he gets into bed beside me and pulls the covers up over his body.

Still on his back, he puts his arm around me and I snuggle up against him, my head on his chest. This is sort of awkward since we haven’t taken that next step yet so neither of us knows how we should act together.

“I’m sorry about your father,” he says.

“Don’t be. He’ll find out soon enough.”

He lets out a regretful sigh. “But if you could have told him today,” he runs his fingers through my hair, “all of this could have been avoided.”

Why does he always blame himself? “True. But the risk would have been raised and I won’t do anything to risk us and all of our people in Antar. Everything depends on us arriving there undetected.”

He nods and then turns on his side and we just stare at each other for a little bit. Then when I can’t take it anymore I lean forward and press my lips against his, melting at their velvety touch. I mean come on, we are in bed together, you didn’t really expect me not to?

Max immediately groans at the contact and deepens the kiss, closing his eyes and pulling my head closer.

Suddenly we find our selves in the middle of our earlier flash of Zan and Theeas wedding night.

“I love you Zan,” she says.

“And I you,” he says as he tugs on the belt of her robe, pulling it open to reveal the red negligee she has on underneath.

He then reaches up and undoes his robe and Theea finds herself staring at him in only a pair of silk boxers.

This is the first time they have seen each other in such little clothing. Zan’s eyes darken with lust. “I have waited for this for a long time,” he says as he runs his hand through her hair delicately and then bends in and takes her lips fiercely. She wraps her arms around him and pulls him down against her, feeling his arousal against her thigh. She immediately groans, feeling wetness pool between her legs in want.

“Me too,” she pants, drunken with his kisses.

He pushes the straps of her negligee aside, revealing her round, soft mounds and takes one of the rosy nipples in his mouth as Theea gasps in pleasure, throwing her head back as he continues to suck one while massaging the other.

He puts more weight against her and slowly begins to grind his pelvis. She can feel his arousal pushing against her heat and she feels a tension building in her stomach as she wriggles under him trying to relieve it. They both start to grind against each other, increasing the friction, driving themselves to insanity.

“Zan,” she whimpers, wanting the ache to be relieved. He pulls back slightly and pulls the negligee down and off of her body, smiling at his first site of her beautiful naked form.

She blushes with embarrassment as he reaches down and runs his fingers along her wet folds, eliciting another whimper of pleasure.

She helps him slide his boxers off and her eyes widen at the length of his arousal causing him to chuckle. She reaches out and takes it in her hand, running her fingers up and down it, feeling how soft it is and yet hard at the same time.

“Zan,” he hisses, pushing her hand away. “I won’t make it, if you keep doing that.”

She smiles, loving the effect she has on him.

He leans over her and positions himself at her entrance. “Are you ready?” he asks as he stares lovingly into her deep brown eyes.

She nods and bites her lip in anticipation.

He pushes the head of his erection inside her slowly at first until he reaches the barrier and then he plunges forward until he is completely sheathed in side of her. She feels a sting but then feels a warmth as he runs his hand across her removing the pain.

“Are you ok?” he asks her as he remains still inside her.

She nods and begins to move her pelvis slowly. He joins suit until they find the perfect rhythm and their lips find each other again.

The tension builds and Zan’s thrust get faster and deeper. He had hoped to hold on longer than this but he can feel himself at the brink of orgasm.

“Theea,” he warns her that is climax is near.

“It’s ok Zan, Let go. I’m almost there too,” she says as she wraps her arms around him clingly to him for dear life as the wave washes over her. When Zan feels her walls tighten around him, he too lets go and spills his seed inside her.

“I love you Theea,” he says as he kisses her nose, her eyes and then finds her mouth once again.

I let out a groan as Theea’s intense orgasm washes over me. I look down and see that Max has also experienced Zan’s orgasm. He immediately runs his hand over his boxers to remove the wetness.

We both stare at each other crimson across our cheeks. I mean, come on that was a little embarrassing.

I open my mouth to break the silence, “Wow, that was…” but I’m not sure what to say. I mean the first orgasm we experienced together was actually someone else’s.

“Weird,” he finishes for me. Yes that really is the only word fit enough to describe it.

“It was nice though, to be close to you like that.” I say and he nods.

“I love you Liz.” He pulls me against him and kisses the top of my head.

“I love you too Max,” I say and then we both drift off to sleep.

-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-

“Hey munchkins,” Serena says giving Beth and Zan a big hug as Max and I slip into a booth.

After a long day of training we needed something to eat. Serena is working the afternoon shift at the Crashdown so Max and I decided to take the kids here for an early supper.

Things are still a little awkward since we shared Zan and Theea’s private moment last night and we have yet to have a real conversation about it.

“We want alien smoothies,” Zan says as he slides into the booth while Max sets up the booster chair for Beth.

“Ok 2 smoothies it is. What about you mom and dad?” she whispers the mom and dad part so that only we can hear.

After we order she says, “I’ll put a rush on it for my favorite customers,” winking at Zan and Beth and then adds in a whisper, “Your dad is in a very sour mood. He has been bad mouthing Max all day. If I was you I would take the orders to go.”

Max and I look at each other with a smirk. We are not surprised but we don’t care. Dad will have to get used to this arrangement soon enough.

Max squeezes my hand gently under the table. “Were not going anywhere,” he says. Serena nods and heads off to put in our order.

In the midst of our meals I see my father at the front counter. He spots us and suddenly makes a bee line right for our table, and can only be described as a raging bull.

“I should have known you’d be staying with him,” my father’s eyes bore into Max’s and I once again squeeze Max’s hand under the table.

“Of course that’s where I went Dad. I love him,” I say it definitely.

“Don’t you have any self worth? And you’re here with his children, at his other girlfriends workplace,” my father’s face is ashen.

“Dad it’s not like that at all,” I protest. He thinks Max and Serena are together.

“Your okay with being a kept Woman?” he asks and just as I am about to answer, Serena having seen the commotion comes over to the table.

“Mr. parker,” she starts but he won’t let her finish. “Serena my dear. You can get away from him, stay with us for a while. He doesn’t deserve either of you. What is it about this man that draws women to him like a magnet?”

“Mr.Parker,” Max says standing up. “This is all a big misunderstanding.”

“Yes, Max and I were never together. He is and has always been in love with your daughter,” Serena explains.

Dad looks confused. “but the kids…” he stutters and I can see the confusion. They look a lot like Max, which makes sense, after all they are his grandkids but we just can’t explain this yet.

“They are mine. The father isn’t in the picture and believe me he was an asshole.” I can’t help but chuckle when she says that. Kivar is definitely an asshole. “Max helped me get away from him and gave the kids and I a place to stay.”

Dad looks at me, then Max, then Serena, then back at me confusion etched on his face. “This is all too much,” he mutters to himself, hand on his head as he walks away, not sure what to make of things.

When he leaves I can’t help but laugh and Serena squeezes into the booth with Beth and Zan across from us.

“Mommy,” Zan tugs on Serena’s arm. “Why is great grandpa yelling like that?” he asks.

“He’s not sure what to make of your grandpa.” Serena explains.

Xan’s eyes grow as wide as saucers. “Doesn’t he know he’s the King?” Zan asks.

Serena and I look at each other and burst into laughter. What will dad do when he finds out that Max, the man he has been warning me against for years is actually a King.

Thanks so much for the feedback!

Alien_Friend - Nice to see another Canadian on the board. Which part of Canada are you in? I hope Max tells Liz soon too but your also right that we have no idea what us going on outside of Liz's POV.

Timelord31 -Thanks.

midnightstar29 - Max is doing something and it will be revealed in time.

FSU/MSW-94 - I really feel for Jeff too. He is doing what any good father would do. I remember what my own father was like when I was that age...and I'm not an alien. LOL. That would not have been something he would have taken well...mainly because he doesn't believe in that stuff. The talk with Jeff is going to go one of two ways; either he won't be able to handle it or it will be a relief because it will explain all the strange behaviours he has witnessed over the last 6 years.

BehrObsession - There are still a few things for them to get past first. It's also a really hard thing to seperate. Are they really individuals or are they just clones of someone else?

L-J-L-76 -Thanks

rie482 - Poor Jeff. He is in for one hell of a shock. Especially when he finds out Liz isn't really his daughter.

Erina - It wasn't just you...there is something going on. With the pod squad, there always is.

Part 22

It is now day five of my new living arrangements and I have to say that it is nice. I love getting to see Serena and my grandkids everyday and Max, although nothing has happened between us since that night we shared Theea and Zan’s experience. We’ve just been so tired from 14 hour days of training, that we’ve fallen asleep as soon as our heads hit the pillow.

The last few days have been carbon copies of each other. We wake up at 5 am. After shutting off the alarm, I make my way haphazardly to the kitchen still in my pajama bottoms and tank top. I turn on the coffee pot and then sit at the kitchen table with Serena, helping her feed breakfast to the kids.

When Max finishes his shower, he joins us in the kitchen, plants a kiss on the top of my head and sits down with us.

I pass him a cup of coffee and then it’s time for my shower.

Thirty minutes later, the 5 of us are in the car, we make one stop at Valenti’s; he watches the kids for us during the day and then we head to the pod chamber for another grueling day of practice.

I have to say, practice is paying off. Michael and Isabelle have now come into their full powers. I am not doing to badly either. My aim is perfect, I can now blast anything I want into pieces with one quick flip of my wrist. I can levitate, move things with my mind and of course my connection with Max is growing. We are now able to hold entire conversations with each other telepathically.

Maria is really improving too. She is now an Antarian martial arts guru. Michael has started working with her, to see if she can develop some of our powers, after all they are human powers, locked away in untapped parts of the brain. He is convinced that it’s her mind set that is holding her back. That and her jealousy over the fact that Kyle is way ahead of her. His blasting power is real competition for my own.

The only thing I find disappointing is that my memory retrieval exercises are getting me nowhere. In truth we are all struggling with it, Isabelle and Michael having remembered only bits and pieces of their childhoods, but I am struggling the most. I have had no recollections with the aid of these exercises. The only memories I have had are the ones of Zan and Theea that Max and I have shared during our flashes.

Liz. Max says to me telepathically during our memory retrieval exercise. We are all sitting in a circle in the pod chamber, focusing.

Why don’t you and Serena take off early, go somewhere and talk.

I need this exercise. You know that.

You need to talk to her. You’ll be too tired tonight. I think you should take the time now.

I know what he is referring to. Last night I was asking him a lot of questions about Serena’s life but he felt it would be better if the answers came from her.

-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_

‘What was it like for you? Before Max came back and found you? I mean, once we were gone?” I ask her. We are back at the house, sitting in the living room.

She looks down and clears her throat.

“If it’s too hard, you don’t have to answer,” I tell her.

“No, I mean it was but I want to talk to you about it. I want us to share things,” she says and I nod.

“When I came out of the pod, I was 8 years old. I was with the truth seekers, a band of Antarians, loyal to dad. They were very kind to me but they weren’t like parents. From the day I hatched, they put me into training. They themselves spent years training and every few months we moved, whenever we got wind that Kivar was getting close. Most of our time was spent indoors.”

As she speaks I feel a tugging at my heart, wondering what her life would have been liked if we weren’t killed, if we had been a family. She would have played outside, been read bedtime stories and most importantly we would have shielded the political realities of the world from her.

“Warlen, the head of the truth seekers army was the one who trained me, taught me everything I know,” she explains.

“Was he good to you?” I ask.

Serena shrugs but then it looks like reconsiders and she nods. “He made sure I was always looked after but he was a gruff man, didn’t let anyone in. He felt responsible, not just for all of us but for the outcome of the war they would be fighting. He was like that even the day before we left. Dad tried to reassure him, the fate of Antar was not in his hands but Warlen would have none of it.”

I reach my hand out and give her a squeeze. “I wish…” I say, my eyes brimming with tears.

She squeezes back but shakes her head, “What’s happened, has happened. No point wasting your thoughts on what might have been,” she says. Her voice, her manners are both detached and I just can’t relate to that.

She changes the subject and her words surprise me. “I know you and dad haven’t been intimate yet but you have to before we go back,” she says it as if she’s merely talking about the weather, not a daughter talking to her own mother about her sex life.

“Why?” I ask in a sputter.

Her eyes are serious and trained on me “You need that to strengthen your connection. Dad needs it to be at full strength, to battle Kivar,” she shivers when she says Kivar’s name.

I chuckle and roll my eyes. “Easier said then done,” I say to which she gives me a perplexed look.

“Your dad doesn’t think he’s ready for that next step,” I explain.

Now it’s Serena’s turn to roll her eyes. “Dad thinks a lot of things and they are not always right.” I can tell she’s frustrated with him and I look to her for clarification.

“I know you think I’ve been really detached but you need to understand. I was raised by an army of men. I mean, I’m not really Serena, not an Antraian, none of us are, we are clones. We were made with a mission, to save Antar. That message was ingrained in me by the truth seekers since I hatched. It was easy for me to operate that way, you know, I had no parents. It’s different for you. You lived 16 years of your life as a human. You had Nancy and Jeff.”

A single tear rolls down Serena’s cheek and I am surprised. This is the first time I have seen her cry.

“Everything I did was to save Antar. I was willing to do what it took. I was a robot,” she continues and then looks at me sadly “but then the kids were born and Max came to rescue me. Suddenly I had a father and now a mother.”

“You feel more human?” I ask, wondering if that was what she is getting at.

She nods “Well, more Antarian, but you know what I mean.”

I nod.

“Now I feel all of these emotions I have never felt before,” she suddenly reaches over and grabs both of my hands in her own.

When she speaks again, her voice is desperate. “Your full memories will come back once you and dad have sex and I need that, I need my mother Theea, right now, so badly.”

My mind is swirling with this new found information. Serena is now sitting in front of me, completely broken. “I had no idea, I mean I haven’t been there for anything,” I trail off thinking of all the things I missed, birthdays, the children’s births, all the things a parent and child should share. “Why do you need me now?” I ask her. What could I possibly offer her now?

“Because I’m so scared mom. Scared he’ll take me again, take his kids. You’re the only one who can truly make me feel safe.” Fear and pain emanate off of her in waves and I feel them weigh against my own heart, the two things a parent never wants their child to feel.

Before I know it she’s in my arms, crying against me as I run my hands through her hair soothingly. “It will be alright sweetheart,” I say gently, hoping that I can keep that promise.

As I hold her I try to digest everything she has told me. How lonely she must have been with the truth seekers, how much of her life I have missed out on. I will do anything I can to make that right.

And then, it comes back to haunt me again, my least favorite emotion, doubt. Why won’t Max make love to me, if it will bring all of my memories back? If it will make us stronger and ease our daughter’s pain?

Is there something he doesn’t want me to know?

-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-

When Serena and I arrive home, it’s late and the house is dark. “Hey, how did it go?” Max asks me when I get in bed beside him.

“I got the answers I was looking for,” I say. “Her life wasn’t what I wanted for her,” I say sadly.

Max pulls me into his arms and nods against my chest. “Did she tell you about the time she spent with Kivar?” he asked.

“Not yet.” I hadn’t even thought about that part of her life. My stomach churns at the very idea.

“It probably would have been too much for one night,” he says.

“Probably.”

“I was really lucky, to be raised as a human,” I say.

“What do you mean?”

“Serena has always thought of herself as a robot. Do you think that’s true…we are all just clones with a mission.?” I ask him. Maybe we were never meant to lead normal lives, to find love and happiness.

Max just looks at me with more love than I have ever seen and then shakes his head. “We are real Liz. You, me, Serena, Isabelle and Michael. Just as real as Maria and Kyle are. Sure we have the weight of the world on our shoulders but we still feel things, still need each other.”

I really wish I could believe that.

“My mother new she had made a mistake with those original three pods because she hadn’t included you and Serena. You were my world, are my world.” He takes my hand and puts it over his chest. “This doesn’t beat without you. I love you both so much. That is not something that you can program Liz, it’s real.”

By this time I am sobbing, he licks the tears off of my face and brushes a soft kiss across my lips.

“Your over tired. Get some rest.” He pulls me close to him and I close my eyes, allowing myself to be lulled to sleep by the sound of his heart beat.

I know, your wondering why I haven’t told him what Serena said about ‘restoring my memories’, for some reason I can’t. I don’t know if it’s fear that is holding me back, or if it’s denial. I just want to lie in Max’s strong arms right now. I don’t know what’s going on, I just know that I can’t ask him, at least not yet.

Part 23

Today Max gave all of us a break from training so we could relax and reconnect. He, Kyle and Michael went to play basketball. Diane is watching the kids. Isabelle, Maria and I are having breakfast together this morning, catching up on all of our girl talk. We invited Serena, but she said she just wanted to put her feet up and have the house to herself.

“I’ve been trying to spend as much time with Jesse as I can before we leave,” Isabelle puts her face in her hands in frustration. “But God, he’s so angry, he won’t even look at me.”

“He acts like I’m leaving him.”

Maria and I exchange a glance. I put my hand on Isabelle’s shoulder and give her a reassuring squeeze. “Well you are leaving him,” I point out softly, hoping I won’t further upset her.

“Well technically I am. I mean we are physically leaving but I’m not leaving the relationship. I still love him, I just don’t want him to be hurt because of me.”

I think back to a time I told Max that I wouldn’t die for him, knowing that I really would, 100 times over. “Maybe he wants to be hurt for you Isabelle. Maybe you need to let him,” I suggest.

Isabelle’s head whips towards me with a scowl. “No. Liz. You don’t know what your talking about.”

Maria laughs. “Ok Chica, put the claws back.”

That comment seems to bring Isabelle back to reality. She gives me a sheepish grin. ‘Sorry….this stuff is just so…”

“Emotional?” I finish for her.

She nods as she finishes her orange juice and then looks at Maria. “Ok, your turn. How’s your mom doing?”

“I don’t know,” Maria sighs as she fiddles with her napkin. “She’s been going to her AA meetings and I’ve been trying to give her as much support as I can.”

“Do you think she’s stopped drinking?” I ask.

Maria just shakes her head and my heart goes out to her. “She’s trying but I’ve smelt alcohol on her breathe more than a few times.”

I still can’t believe that Maria and I have been friends since forever and she never confided in me about this. I know Amy has had a hard life. Maria’s dad took off for parts unknown when she was young and Amy had to work her tail off to makes ends meet. Maria has always had some sort of job to help out, but Amy was always good to her.

I guess two years ago, a relationship Amy was in went sour. They had been talking about Marriage and then one day the guy high tailed it out of town, just like Maria’s dad and it was just too much for her.

Maria says, she didn’t tell me because of shame. She didn’t want to admit there were any problems with her family. I guess, 2 years ago, when Michael went on a fishing trip with Kyle, yes you didn’t read this wrong, Michael and Kyle went fishing together, Maria went to stay at her mom’s for the weekend. She found her passed out at the kitchen table on Saturday night and I’m sure I don’t have to tell you how the rest went down.

“Spaceboy had been amazing. He’s over at mom’s everyday helping her with home improvement projects. He drives her to her AA meetings. Last night, he invited her over to our place for dinner and he actually cooked. Can you believe it?”

We both stare at her in disbelief. Isabelle bursts into uncontrollable laughter.

“Let me guess…Burgers and fries, hot dogs, macaroni and cheese?” Isabelle asks still giggling.

“No, no space fries and blood of Alien smoothies?” I guess since those are the only things he cooks her at the Crashdown.

“Nope,” Maria beams. “Wrong on both counts. He used the Betty Crocker cookbook. Shepherds Pie and apple cobbler for dessert.”

“Wow Maria.” A picture of Michael in a fluffy apron appears in my mind and I have to snicker. “I’m impressed.”

Maria pouts. ‘Laugh all you want. He’s being so helpful and it’s been great.”

“I know Maria. I’m sorry,” I say.

“Sorry,” Isabelle manages to get out through her laughter which has shown no signs of dieing down yet.

Maria crosses her arms across her chest and gives Isabelle and I the evil eye until we have both calmed down.

“Ok, Liz.” Maria says.

“What?” I ask when she and Isabelle stare at me as if waiting for me to stay something.

“It’s your turn. So dish.”

“I don’t have anything to say,” I respond. Do you think they will buy it?

“Oh please. Hello. How are things in the Max department?” Maria asks with the roll of her eyes.

“I don’t know what you want me to say. Things are good.”

“Good. Great…but how are things in the sack. You know we are dying to know.”

“Maria, that’s private,” I say turning red. I know, more the action of a teenager but I can’t help it.

Maria shows no signs of dropping the topic. “We all lost our privacy, the minute the pod squad beamed into our lives.”

“Well….I’m sure that Isabelle doesn’t want to hear about her brother’s sex life,” I say, looking to Isabelle for some help.

Her response isn’t what I hope for at all. “Actually Liz. I don’t mind. With my own love life in shambles, a piece of good news is welcomed. You know how I feel about you and Max,” Isabelle replies.

“Well, we don’t have a sex life…” I trail off with a grin.

“But?” Maria prods knowing there is something more.

“But…” nnow it’s my turn to fidget. We all lean forward and I whisper. “I did have my first orgasm.”

Shock registers on both girls faces. “You mean you’ve never….?” Maria asks.

“What?” I ask and then realize what she means. “Oh ya. I meant my first orgasm with someone else. Only it wasn’t with Max.” I explain.

“What?” Both women scream. Everyone in the dinner is looking at us now and if I wasn’t red before, I definitely am now.

“Oh,” I say as I realize how that sounded. “I mean it was with Max but it was….well we had this flash of Theea and Zan on their wedding night and we both sort of shared in their release,” I clarify.

“Really?” Isabelle asks.

“Wow. Kinky,” Maria says, “I wonder if Max is telling Michael about this…could be some interesting possibilities.”

“No Maria. Don’t get any ideas,” I say knowing exactly what she is thinking.

‘So when are you and Max going to experience your own….release,” Maria asks.

“I don’t know,” I say with frustration. No pun intended. “Max has been pushing me away and Serena says that I won’t get my memories back until we have sex and fully connect.”

“Have you talked to Mac about this?” Maria asks.

I shake my head. ‘I just don’t get it. I mean I know he’s attracted to me….so why doesn’t he want me?”

“Oh Max definitely wants you,” Maria says with a smile.

“Well…maybe there is something he doesn’t want me to remember?” I suggest. That’s what my gut has been telling me, these last few days.

Isabelle looks angry. “If my brother does something to screw things up with you again, I’ll serve his alien head on a platter.”

Ok, I think she and Maria have been hanging out together for too long.

I don’t want them to think I am bad mouthing Max. “No Isabelle, Max has been so good to me. This whole thing is just so frustrating. I mean, my own daughter has had sex and I haven’t. That is just impossible for me to wrap my head around. And then she’s the one encouraging Max and I to go for it. I mean I accepted the three of you were Aliens. I even accepted that I am an alien. But this whole thing with Serena is just…”

“I know.” Isabelle nods.

“At least you can’t say your life is boring,” Maria offers and the three of start to laugh.

-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-

We are having a group meeting at the Crashdown tonight. My parents are away and Michael was on the grill so he closed up early so that we could all have a quite place to talk.

We have only a few more weeks of training left and then we will be leaving for Antar, so we have a lot of plans to make.

“What about K laboratories?” I ask.

“What about it?” Max replies.

“We need to go back their, get that file on Serena and find out what else they know. The Rawden’s must have a weakness, every species does and maybe K laboratories has that answer.”

“No. Absolutely not,” Max answers.

Michael gives Max an unimpressed look. “No. I’m with Liz. We need to find out why they have been studying us and who they are.”

Max shakes his head. “Look, we already know they are affiliated with the Rawden’s.”

“All the more reason,” Michael argues.

Serena nods in agreement. “We need to know what we are up against.”

“And just how do your propose we do it. Just show up?” Max says sarcastically? “I mean you do realize they are looking for us. We’d be making their job really easy”

I shake my head. “You said before when you rescued Serena you were able to transform yourself into a priest.”

Max shakes his head. “That is only something that works on Antar. Not here.”

Michael continues his argument. “Look I know it’s dangerous, but everything is dangerous right now and they might have the answers we are looking for.”

Again Max shakes his head. Michael and I exchange glances. We’ll drop it for now but this conversation is far from over.

Suddenly I hear a knock at the door.

“Who could that be?” Maria asks.

“Obviously someone who can’t read,” Kyle replies, knowing that the very visible closed sign is on the front of the door. As always, Kyle’s humor helps to lighten the mood.

“Well since no one else is moving…” Maria just rolls her eyes, gets up and walk towards the door. “I’ll tell whoever it is that we closed early,” she says as she turn the lock and then we hear her gasp.

“Tess,” she screams and within seconds we are all standing beside her at the door. Isabelle, Max, Serena, Michael and I, our hands out in front of us ready to blast her.

As I stare at the women I blame for everything that has gone wrong in my life, I expect to feel my blood boil with rage but I don't feel any anger towards her at all. I realize that something seems wrong. Something seems off. She seems so fragile, she sems so...

“No, please” she puts her hands up defensively and cowers before us, “It’s…”

“Aunt Ava,” Serena says.

The woman nods, relief flooding her blue eyes.

“Ava?” Max and I ask in disbelief.

Part 24

Ava. It seems unbelievable but at the same time we know it’s true. We feel it, her essence, although it’s subconscious, we recognize her.

She looks exactly like Tess. The blue eyes, the blonde hair that sits in ringlets at her shoulders. But it’s at those physical traits that the resemblance ends. Everything else about her is different.

She’s pulled a chair up to a booth that the rest of us have scrunched into. Max, Isabelle and I are on one side; Serena, Maria and Kyle on the other, like a bunch of sardines, but we barely notice. We can’t notice anything but her.

Michael is standing behind her, his arms crossed in skepticism, afraid to get too close. His eyes are untrusting. That doesn’t surprise me. When has Michael ever trusted anyone? He refuses to take his eyes off of her, almost as if he is afraid that if he looks away for even a nanosecond, she will try something.

She must feel like a gerbil in a cage, being studied as we all stare at her. Sort of funny, considering that Maria always called Tess a gerbil.

Kyle’s stare is an angry one. I’m sure that when he looks at her he can’t help but think of Tess. He had such high hopes where she was concerned and as a result I think that out of all of us, he was burnt the most.

Isabelle looks curious. She wants to know more about life on Antar, more than Max can tell her and I think she wonders if Ava is the key.

Maria glances my way and gives me an ‘I’ve got your back babe’ stare. It’s such a typical Maria move and I love her all the more for it.

Then there is Max. There is no word to describe what he feels. There are just so many emotions going back and forth between us. He’s worried about keeping us all safe and he’s very angry. Does seeing her remind him of Tess?

I feel so many things but most of all I’m curious. Come on, you can’t be surprised. The Liz Parker side of me is always the scientist, wanting to piece things together, figure everything out.

Who is Ava? I mean, I know she’s my cousin, but who is she really and why is she here, why now?

And the most important question, can we trust her?

Max must sense my whirlwind of emotions because he takes my hand under the table and gives me a squeeze. It’s amazing how one simple gesture can ground me as much as it does, make me feel at ease.

After quite a few more moments of silence pass, we know that there are questions to ask, someone has to begin. Naturally, we all look to Max, after all he is the king.

What, you want me to start? He asks through our connection.

Yes. I answer. You’re the King.

And so, the interrogation begins.

“When did you get here Ava?” Max starts with the most important question and then adds. “How did you get here?”

Before she can answer, Michael throws out another,” And why are you here, why now?” Again his tone is untrusting. When we all give him a look, he feigns innocence. “What? Don’t you think the timing is a little fishy?”

I have to admit he’s right but for some reason I feel defensive of her. Totally not the emotion I was expecting. “Give her a chance to talk Michael,” I say rolling my eyes.”

“No. Why should we when we can’t trust anything that comes out of her mouth?” he asks.

“Maybe this wasn’t a good idea,” she says, her eyes moving towards the door. She slowly starts to get up.

“No. Ava stay,” Max commands and she sits back down. “Michael, I knew Ava when I was Zan. She was a good friend to all of us, Liz’s cousin. We have no reason to believe…” he starts but Michael cuts him off.

“A lot of time has passed since then, Max,” he argues. “Time for loyalty to change sides.”

Max sighs and brings his right hand up to his brow in frustration. He never found it easy to deal with Michael’s hot headed antics and I don’t think he’s finding it any easier, even now. “Here’s what we are going to do. We will give her a chance, listen to what she has to say. Then we’ll evaluate it and if we can’t trust her, then and only then we will throw her to the wolves.”

That’s Max, always giving the benefit of the doubt. I wish I could remember that other life. I can tell that Zan was a very fair King.

Ava looks very uncomfortable. Grateful Max has given her a chance but I’m sure she is also wondering if she will have to endure whatever the ‘thrown to the wolves’ metaphor entails, if her answers don’t sit quite right with us.

We all look to Ava who begins.

“I’ve been here for the last 7 years,” she says, eyes staring at the floor. She then looks up timidly.

“Here as in…?” Max asks.

“As in earth,” she explains.

That was not the answer we were expecting.

“But you died. The same night we all did in Antar. Are you a clone?” Max asks.

Ava shakes her head. “No I didn’t die. I’m the original Ava. Theea’s cousin.”

“Why didn’t’ you try to contact us then?” Michael asks raising his eyebrows.

“I did,” she answers.

None of this makes any sense and of course Michael is the first to voice that fact. “What the fuck is going on?” Michael asks. He has a way with words doesn’t he?

Ava looks down, a look of sadness, no make that regret flashes across her face. “Ok, I’m going about this all wrong,” she sighs. “It’s getting late maybe we should talk about this in the morning,” she suggests.

There is no way any one of us will leave things this way tonight. “Ava, just start at the beginning. I don’t think any of us will be getting any sleep tonight,” I say and everyone nods in agreement.

“Dad, we have to pick up the kids at Diane’s. Let’s do that and then all go over to our place,” Serena says.

“Good idea,” Isabelle adds.

I have to agree, this probably isn’t the best place to be having this conversation.

********

Thirty minutes later we find ourselves at our home, the kids tucked snuggly in bed.

We have all gathered in the living room, cups of hot tea or cocoa in our hands and shortbread cookies, courtesy of Serena. As I mentioned before, she really is the alien version of Suzie homemaker.

“What I have to say, it’s not all pretty,” she says. “But I hope you’ll at least respect me for being honest. You have no idea how hard this is for me.”

Maria just looks at me with the roll of her eyes. She had no sympathy for Tess and has extended the same to Ava.

We all nod in understanding. She nods and begins.

She starts with the basic information, Max has already told us. “I was Theea’s’s cousin. My parents were killed in an accident and I was sent to live with her and her father. When she and Zan wed, they let me move into the palace with them.”

I nod. “You remember this then, Liz?” she says

I shake my head. “Just bits and pieces. I remember being at the ball with you the night Max talked to my father and also you getting me ready for my wedding night,” I explain what I have seen in the flashes Max and I have shared.

“Oh, ok.”

“Anyway, I….oh this is hard….” She says and we all remain quiet, waiting for her to gather the courage.

“When we were at the heart of the war and it was beginning to look like we might loose, Kivar approached me, said he planned to kill Liz once he took over the throne.”

I wonder where she is going with this.

“Theea, you were more of a sister to me than a cousin. And I loved Serena like an Aunt would. You were both my everything. I need you to understand that.” She is filled with desperation.”

“I do understand Ava.” Max had mentioned that we were close.

She takes a deep breathe before continuing. “My parents were gone, you were the only living family I had left and I just couldn’t loose you.”

“So what are you saying?” I ask. I think I know….but could it really be what I am thinking?

“I know you all think that Vilandra betrayed you with Kivar.”

Panic flashes across Vilandra’s face at the mention of the part of her past she wishes she could forget.

“What are you saying?” Max asks.

“It wasn’t Vilandra. It was me. I was the one working for Kivar.”

Maria gasps.

Shock registers on Isabelle’s face. “But Whitaker…she said that I did…she…” Isabelle cries.

Ava doesn’t look surprised. ‘Was this Whitaker a skin?” she asks.

“Yes.”

Ava rolls her eyes. “That’s Kivar’s main weapon, playing on others fears. He knew that if you found out you had betrayed your people, your brother it would create a rift between you, and keep you from finding out more about your true identity.”

Isabelle starts to sob as relief floods her veins. Max lets go of my hand and walks over to Isabelle, wrapping his arms around her, we all know how much this means to her.

Michael looks annoyed. He probably doesn’t want her to get her hopes up. I mean we’ve known Ava for under an hour. She might not be telling the truth.

But she is. I can feel it.

“You betrayed us. Why am I not surprised,” Michael quips.

‘I’m not Tess,” she answers and for some reason my heart goes out to her.

“If it walks like a duck and talks like a duck then it is a duck,” Maria retorts.

“And how do you even know about Tess anyhow?” Kyle asks. It’s the first thing he’s asked all evening.

“I’ll get to that,” she says and then continues on with her story.

“Kivar promised me that if I worked for him, helped him overtake the throne that in return he would promise me Theea and Serena’s safety,” she explains flashing guilty eyes at Max. ‘I’m sorry, Zan, but she was all I had.”

Max doesn’t say anything. He doesn’t look impressed but I can tell he is waiting, until she’s finished it all before passing judgment.

Michael, however, is not waiting. “Like that excuses it,” he spits.

“So what did you do for him then?” I ask.

“Just gave him some information. Things that were going on in the palace.”

“Like what?” Max presses her to expand on that vague answer.

“Like, when your mother had the first set of pods made, I told him about them.”

Now I feel Max’s anger as his grip on my hand tightens.

“That doesn’t make any sense,” he says “Why didn’t he destroy them then?” He's right. That doesn't make sense.

“He thought that would be too obvious so instead he…” she stutters looking down, “he altered them.”

“Altered them how?” he asks.

“You know about the problem Varad found with the formula?” she asks.

He nods.

“That was Kivar. He had one of his scientists program them to remember who they were as soon as they hatched and they were programmed to be loyal to Kivar.”

“Then what happened?” he asks. Now he is standing up, in front of her, looking at her, the way he looked at Tess in the pod chamber that day.

She cowers under his stare “I can’t,” she mumbles, fearfully.

“Tell me,” he demands through gritted teeth.

Michael gets up and stands beside Max, looking equally as mean. “You heard the King. Answer his questions.”

“Max, Michael, that’s enough. She approached us remember, this isn’t an interrogation,” I say. It’s not that I’m not mad. It’s just that, the more we know, the greater our chances will be when we go back.

Max stands back, giving Ava some breathing room.

She chuckles. “Theea had that same power over Zan.”

“Zan was whipped?” Maria jokes.

Ava shakes her head. “It wasn’t that. It was more of a balancing thing. He was known as being a little hot headed at times and she just knew how to help him cool down. They truly were two halves of a whole.”

“Flattering us isn’t going to get you anywhere Ava.” Max replies and Ava knows she is treading on very thin ice so she quickly continues with her story.

“Anyways, after I watched Kivar kill Serena, I knew Liz was next, that Kivar had just used me and wouldn’t keep his promise.”

“I remember that day. I tried to…Zan tried to find you….” Max trails off remembering that day. “I was trying to get you and Liz to safety.” I can see tears welling up in Max’s eyes but he wills them back so that they don’t fall.

“I know, I saw you and then I saw you and Theea get killed and I knew I had to get away from Kivar. He still didn’t know about the second set of pods but he knew I was hiding something. You had to be reborn. It was the only chance that Antar had,” she is crying now.

“I knew I had made a horrible mistake that I would never forgive myself for. I hid but one of his men found me. They had a skin try to get inside my head. I wouldn’t let them. I used my own powers to delay them. I tried to kill myself but they wouldn’t let me. I knew I couldn’t hold out forever, but if I could just hold out long enough for your ship to take off…”

“That’s why Kivar came running at the last minute,” Max says putting the pieces together.

“We had all made it except for Serena,” Isabelle says, her voice just a tone above a whisper. We are all quiet as the horrid events sink in.

“Sorry,” she whispers.

‘Why didn’t you come to me Ava? When Kivar first approached you?” he asks. “We could have done something.”

“I know I should have but….Zan, it wouldn’t have made a difference. He was coming whether I helped him or not and with the way you ran things….he was going to win. That’s why I struck the deal…the deal for Liz.”

“So what happened after that?” I ask, feeling like I am going to be sick.

“I helped the truth seekers kidnap Serena’s pod. I then continued working in the palace for Kivar, helping the truth seekers out behind his back as often as I could.”

“The truth seekers said nothing to me about you while I was on Antar,” Max says skeptically.

“They probably thought I was dead. I’ve been here a long time and have had no communication with them,” she replies.

“So how did you get here?”

“Kivar sent me, to find you, find out where Serena was. I went willingly with my own mission, to find you and help you find your way back to the truth seekers.”

“The thing is that the coordinates we had, were for the first set of pods.”

“You ended up in New York?” I ask.

She nods. ‘With Zan, Lonnie and Rath?”

“yup.”

“So what happened?”

“I knew they were the wrong ones right away. Their loyalty to Kivar was sickening.”

“Three years year later Tess and Nasdo showed up. I guess when Kivar figured I hadn’t completed my mission, he sent someone else.”

“With the same agenda,” I whisper.

She nods. “When Tess found out who I really was, your cousin, she shifted into my form.”

I’m suddenly putting everything together. She came to Roswell with Lonnie and Rath to get Max and Tess to go to the summit. I had felt such a strong connection to her, like I had known her before.

“But Max, you said that when the dupes showed up Tess had another shape shifter take on her identity, to make us believe she was part of the royal four.”

“I didn’t know that for sure,” he says and I still don’t. We can’t trust her. He says through our connection.

“I assumed it Liz. I mean she went missing the night we died. When I went back to Antar she wasn’t there. Serena?” he looks to our daughter for clarification.

“She wasn’t Dad. In fact my only memories of her were from when I was a child. I never saw here again after that day.”

“And when Tess and I went to New York, there were 4 pods,” he argues.

Ava just shakes her head. “That’s probably where your mind warping theory comes in. There were only three pods.”

“So that was you that came to Roswell then, slept on the couch down here?” I ask.

“Ya, cornball,” she laughs with the New York accent.

“What?” How can she makes jokes at a a time like this?

“Just something I did to fit in with your new york dupes,” she says in her regular tone. The one that resembles Tess’s.

Now I feel angry. Betrayed. “Why didn’t you say anything? Why didn’t you help us?” I ask, raising my voice in desperation. “You knew what Lonnie and Rath had done to Zan and you…..

“You were my cousin,” I add, sadly.

She nods.

So much could have been prevented. We could have stopped Tess from going back to Antar. Max wouldn’t have had to leave us. Serena wouldn’t have been forced to marry Kivar. The enormity of it is too much to bear.

“Liz, are you ok?” Max asks, his hand on my shoulder.

I nod. As hard as it is I need to know more. I need to know everything.

“When I came here, I realized that none of you had your memories and that none of you even knew about Theea. She thought that she was human.”

‘So what?” Kyle says. “You should have told us. You should have told Liz who she was!” he yells.

“I couldn’t. Tess and Lonnie and rath, threatened to kill you all,” she explains.

“So you made the same mistake again, and struck a deal just like you did with Kivar?” Michael rolls his eyes. “This is rich.”

“You had barely scratched the surface on your powers. Let them manipulate you. They would have taken you out with the snap of a hand.”

She looks at me now. “I could see how much Zan loved you. I k new he would never betray you with Tess so I left well enough alone. I also helped you save him, remember?”

I think back to the night I soul traveled to New York, prevented Max from being squashed by the scaffold. “You said I was different because you healed me?” I protest.

“I had to find a way for you to tap into your powers. When you said you’d been healed. I felt I could use that.”

“When you left where did you go?” I asked. I mean why did she just leave us?

“Somewhere Lonnnie and Rath could never find me. But I kept watching and waiting,”

“For what?” Isabelle asks. “Certainly not to help us. I mean, my god, when I think of all of the times we could have used your help, where all this knowledge could have….” Isabelle trails off, no doubt feeling as sick as I do as her hand clutches her stomach.

“For you to remember who you were. For you to all go back.”

“Why?” I ask.

“I’m going back with you.”

Thanks for all your lovely words of comfort about doggie. Her stitches were removed yesterday and she is on the mend so I am back to writing.

Thanks so much for all your feedback. It appears I have a few new readers as well, which is great. Thank you all so much. I don't have time to respond to your feedeback individually as I am on my way to Toronto, but I will respond next time. Thank you so much!

Part 25

“She’s not staying here,” Max says with intention.

After another hour of grilling my poor cousin Tess, everyone decides to call it a night, or should I say morning since it is almost 3 am.

I give Max a look full of question. Just like the others he is still so skeptical of Ava. Why am I the only one who trusts her completely?

“I agree. I don’t want her near Zan or Beth.” Serena throws her two cents in. I give her a surprised look. “We don’t even know her,” she says obviously feeling the need to defend herself. “Let alone whether we can trust her.”

In theory she’s right, but my heart tells me otherwise.

I look to Michael and Maria expecting them to offer up their place but then remember they are staying with Amy right now, to keep her safely on the wagon.

I wouldn’t even consider asking Kyle. The Déjà vu factor would be unbearable for him. I don’t think he could survive a Tess look alike sleeping in his bedroom again.

“She can stay with me,” Isabelle offers.

“What about Jesse?” I ask, suprised. I know things are rocky between them right now and they need as much alone time as they can possibly get before we leave for Antar.

“Boston on Business,” she clarifies.

We all nod, the night accommodation finally settled.

Slowly, people start to say goodnight and leave and I have to admit I am glad. I am absolutely exhausted.

I head to the kitchen where Max and Serena are having some tea, hoping to join them. I wonder if Serna has any Chamomile in the cupboard. That’s exactly what I need to help me into a deep slumber.

I am interrupted on my way to the kitchen. “Liz?” It’s Kyle. “Can we talk?” he asks.

I yawn. “Kyle, can it wait till tomorrow?” Did I mention I’m tired?

He shakes his head. “Ok then,” I say urging him to say whatever is on his mind.

He lets out an aggravated huff. “Not here,” he says and before I know it he’s pulling me out the door onto the front porch.
The moment the door closes behind us, he gets straight to the point. “I overheard Max and Serena talking in the kitchen.”

“And?” Will he spit it out already?

“Why didn’t you tell me that you hadn’t slept with him yet?”

I am floored, to say the least. Not exactly what I was expecting to hear from Kyle, especially at this time of the morning. “Because it was none of your Business. God, you have some nerve…” Not to mention how complicated and awkward this whole conversation is, knowing his feelings for me.

Uggh, I really want to give him a good swift kick.

Kyle shuffles nervously. “Liz,” he says and I step away, turning my back to him, forcing myself to take deep breathes.

“He’s keeping secrets from you.”

Now that gets my attention, plays on the insecurities already alive in my mind but I don’t let him know that. “Kyle.” My voice is stern as I turn around to face him. I want him to drop this and he knows it, but still he chooses not to.

“What? I heard them in the kitchen, talking. I thought you’d want to know.”

“So what’s the big secret then?” I ask. Maybe he really did hear something.

He shrugs his shoulders. “He didn’t say.”

“How convenient.” I roll my eyes. “Kyle, I can’t believe you’d stoop this low.”

Now, hurt registers on his face. “Liz,” he whispers in a shaky voice. “You think I’m making this up?” Now he looks angry.

“I think,” I say but I don’t finish. I honestly don’t know what to finish with. He’s keeping secrets from you. Part of me wants to say No shit Sherlock. Tell me something I don’t already know. I mean all of the signs are there. And if Kyle knows Max and I didn’t sleep together he must have heard Max and Serena talking about it. The other part of me thinks Kyle is just confused, or better yet jealous. If he can make Max look bad, maybe he thinks I’d run to him? But that’s not Kyle? Is it?

“You think what Liz?” he asks obviously aware of my internal struggle and unwilling to wait for the answer.

“I think- I think you should go. Goodnight Kyle.” I make an abrupt turn and walk back into the house leaving Kyle on the porch looking back at me.

I think I made my point. Don’t you? Kyle needs to but out.

-_-_-_-_-_-_-_

Everyone including Ava, shows up at the house for breakfast. Well a very late breakfast that borders on lunch, since we all slept in.

“It’s the resemblance to Tess isn’t it, that has you all spooked?” Ava asks aware of all the strange looks she’s getting from almost everyone as she tries to eat her cereal.

She is met with numerous nods. I just give her a sympathetic smile. She looks relieved and smiles back at me in return.

“That can easily be changed.” She puts her hand up in front of her, a light shines around her and then she looks like the old Ava. A short blue bob has replaced the blonde ringlets. Her jeans and t-shirt replaced with leather and a nose ring adorns her face.

“What the fuck?” Michael asks getting up and charging towards her.

“You’re a shape shifter?” I ask in surprise. “But your my cousin and Antarian’s don’t shift do we?” I look to Max.

“No.”

“I knew you were a liar.” That’s Michael again.

He quickly pushes everyone into the other room.

“Ava?” I yell with question. I can still see her sitting in the kitchen. She looks fearful and doesn’t respond.

Rage boils inside me. “You all treat her like a criminal. Give her a chance to say what she has to say. I’m telling you I recognize her. I know she’s telling the truth.”

“How?’ Maria asks.

“I don’t know. I just feel it.”

“Oh with your premonition powers?” Michael scoffs with sarcasm. “You didn’t even recognize Max, your own husband, the first 16 years of your life here on earth, or me or Isabelle. Didn’t know you had a daughter. So sorry, but I just don’t trust your hunches.”

He’s verbalized the thoughts that have gone through my own head many times, throwing salts into my wounds, and it hurts causing me to wince.

Max quickly jumps to my defense. “Michael, that’s enough,” Max bellows so loud that the hairs on my arms stand on end. “Don’t ever talk to her like that!”

Michael rolls his eyes. “God, Max. When she was a human it was always about her. Now she’s an alien and it’s about her. It’s always about her.”

“Michael,” Maria says giving me a guilty look as though she’s responsible for his actions. “Shut up.”

I am really surprised by his admission. I mean I knew he felt that long ago but when Max left 4 years ago, Michael and I grew close. At least I thought so.

“No, Max. Let him. If that’s how he feels,” I whimper, tears in my eyes. We can’t go to Antar with Michael feeling all this obvious animosity towards me. It’s best to have it out in the open. Secrets destroy. Something we all know, all to well.

We all look to Michael who appears to have nothing more to say on the manner. Max and I exchange looks. We’ll talk about how to handle this later.

Kyle breaks the silence. “Let’s not get distracted,” he says looking towards Ava, who has walked into the room we are all in. “Ava?” he asks, urging her to continue her explanations.

“My father, wasn’t really my father. Mother, she had an affair with a shifter,” she explains.

“Did he know?” I ask, my voice still shaky with hurt from Michael’s admission.

“No. I would have been thrown to the wolves.”

I look at Max for confirmation. “It’s true. Shifter-Antarian mixes are against the rules, punishable by death.”

_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-

“Max, are you keeping things from me?” I ask him as we lie in bed. The bottom of my tank top has risen up so that my bellybutton is exposed and Max is tracing circles on the upper part of my stomach.

“Yes,” he answers in a calm tone, which surprises me.

“What do you mean yes?” I ask. I expected him to at least try and deny it. What kind of answer is yes?

Instead of answering, he leans in and gives me a soft kiss. When he pulls back, he is laughing. I don’t find it amusing and cross my arms across my chest.

“Max!” I plead for answers.

“Liz, we were 28 years old when we were killed.”

“So?” What on earth does that have to do with anything?

“So, that’s 28 years of memories you don’t have. 28 years worth of things I haven’t told you.”

He leans down and kisses me again. “Max,” I protest and push him away wondering if he is just trying to distract me. I mean he must know me well enough by now, to know that I need answers.

He sighs and rolls his eyes. “You are very persistent, you know that?” he smirks. “What exactly do you want to know?”

“Everything.”

“You’ve already started to remember Liz. The gaps will be filled in with time,” he explains.

Suddenly a thought enters my mind. “You don’t want me to remember do you?”

He sighs. He’d rather make out, than have this conversation, but knows he doesn’t have much say in the matter. I know I seem hypocritical. He finally wants to take things further and yet I want to talk, but come on, I also need answers.

“Part of me doesn’t,” he answers.

I look away from him. Again, that wasn’t something I thought he would admit. “Oh,” is all I can say in response.

“Liz,” he says forcing my chin back towards him. “It’s just that we endured such horrible things. You already saw Serena die once. I don’t want you to relive it. There was also your father’s death years before,” he scratches his head nervously.

“How?” I ask. I don’t even remember my father. I wonder what he looked like, what sort of person he was.

“A massive stroke. Left him paralyzed on one side. He lived about a year after that. You cared for him and watched him deteriorate.”

“Oh,” I say, my eyes swimming with tears.

“But what about the good stuff. Serena’s birth. Our marriage. My cousin?” I ask him.

“When your ready. It will all come back,” he says and his words comfort me.

I guess he feels the conversation has been laid to rest because he captures my lips once more.

“Max,” I say when we come up for air.

“Yes, Liz?” he cocks an eyebrow at me and there is a grin on his face. I feel like a two year old asking question and we both laugh.

“If there were things you really thought I should know…” I trail off.

“I’d tell you.” He comforts me and then takes my lips once again and rolls on top of me. He obviously doesn’t want to stop this time and I don’t want him to.

His hands run through my hair. “I thought about this when I was on Antar. How I couldn’t wait to run my hands through your silky hair again,” he sighs.

His hands run down my shoulders, my arms, until they are resting on my hips.

His fingers dip into the waistband of my panties. This is unchartered territory for us, my belly quivers and liquid pools between my things in anticipation.

His fingers run through my curls and immediately seek out my heat. The first touch is electric as his fingers slide gently across my folds. I part my legs slightly to give him better access.

“God, you so wet Liz,” he says as he continues to move his fingers in an up and down motion, just barely missing my clitoris each time. I start to buck my hips against his hand as the tension increases, wanting to move his hand closer and closer each time.

The way he stares into my eyes, watching and reveling in all of my reactions to his ministrations makes this the most intimate thing I have ever experienced.

“Liz, I want to taste you. Is that ok?” he asks.

I nod and bite my lip in embarrassment.

In the blink of an eye, he’s pulled my panties off and is sitting in between my legs, kissing the inside of my thighs.

“Your so beautiful he says.”

His tongue feels even better than his fingers as they glide up and down my folds. “You taste incredible,” he says, when he looks up at me with a smile and then ducks his head down once again.

He becomes more forceful in his ministrations and I begin to thrash my hips wildly against his face as the tension builds to the point of pure torture. He then changes tactics, pumping his tongue in and out of my slit in perfect rhythm with the grinding motions of my hips.

“Max, please,” I cry needing release.

He immediately focuses on my nub, circling his tongue around it, lightly at first, then faster and harder, until I see stars and find myself convulsing beneath him as he licks up everything I have to offer.

“Thank you,” I say shyly when he comes back up to join me.

He shakes his head. “No. Thank you. I’ve been dreaming about that for a long time.” He gives me a soft kiss and I taste myself on him which I find surprisingly erotic.

“Can I return the favor?” I ask staring at what looks at a painful tent in his boxers. He shakes his head. “There’s lots of time for that. I wanted tonight to be about you and now we both need rest.”

I nod and curl up against him, the fact we have taken a step further has me feeling more at peace than I have in weeks. I’m glad I didn’t push him much before tonight and just let things happen. Max obviously needed to wait until things felt right for him. Maybe that’s how it will be for my memories as well? I want them to come now, but maybe I’m really not read and my subconscious knows that.

“I love you.” Max kisses the top of my head.

“I love you too.”

Just as I’m hovering, on the brink of sleep I have a flash.

“Your going to have yourself all worn out by the time Zan arrives home,” Diane laughs as Theea paces up and down the main floor of the palace.

“When is he expected again?” Theea asks.

“Soon, dear daughter in law. Soon.”

A few minutes later, Zan bursts through the palace door, running straight for Theea, picking her up, he begins to carry her towards the stairs as he smothers her with kisses.

“Zander!” his mother reminds her of her presence.

“Oh sorry Mother. Hello,” he says as he walks over to her, still carrying Theea and gives her a kiss on the cheek.

“How were the negotiations?” she asks.

“Good mother. I’ll update you in the morning. Theea and I need some time alone.”

“I’m sure you do. Sleep well you two.”

Once they are safely in their chambers, Zan sets Theea on the side of the bed and begins to remove his jacket.

“It’s been too long Zan.”

“I know, baby. I was going crazy without you.”

“The two undress each other quickly. Just as Zan is about to lift Theea onto the bed she stops him.

“What is it?” he asks her through ragged breaths. “Feel,” she says putting him palm against her belly.

He immediately feels a presence and looks upon his wife in loving awe. ‘A baby?”

She nods tears in her eyes. “It’s a girl and her name shall be Serena.”

I'll be back with the next part next weekend.

I am actually updating on time and will do my best to update every weekend. I may miss a few when RL send me a challenge but will do my absolute best.

This is a shorter, transitional part because something big will be coming up soon. Also, I had no time to BETA it, so sorry for any typos.

Part 26

This morning over breakfast at home with Max and Serena, I bring up the idea of going back to the lab, again. Once again I am met with iron clad resistance.

“So, we have the day off from practice, what would you like to do?” Max asks as if it’s the most normal thing in the world and he hasn’t just dismissed one of my ideas with no reasonable explanation other than the fact that it’s not safe. When has anything alien related ever been safe?

“Well,” I reply not wanting the day to be a complete waste. “I think I’ll go talk to Michael. See if I can work things out.”

He nods. “I’ll go with you,” he says as he carries our plates over to the sink. “Just let me finish these and then I’m all yours.”

“Actually, I think this is something I should do on my own.”

“Are you sure?” he asks.

“Max, having you jump to my defense won’t exactly help the situation.” I mean isn’t that exactly what Michael has issues with?

“Ok.”

I walk over to the sink and give him a kiss. “I won’t be long.”

****************

When Michael opens Amy’s door to find me on the other side he cringes with remorse. “Oh, Liz. I’m sorry,” he says.

“He most certainly is,” Maria says giving him an exasperated look as she joins us at the door.

“Don’t just stand there sweetie. Come in,” she says, again giving Michael a look that clearly indicates she thinks he has no common sense.”

“Thanks,” I say as she ushers me into the living room and in minutes has me settled on the couch with some sort of herbal tea in hand.

“It will help you de-stress,” she explains, “and this,” she hands a mug to Michael, “will help you deal with your repressed anger.”

“Look Liz, about what I said, you know I…”

Michael tries to apologize but I cut him off. “Look Michael, I know we need to discuss this, I really do, but that’s not why I’m here.”

“It isn’t?” he asks with surprise.

I shake my head and go straight to the point. “I want to go to K laboratories today. See what they know about us and what we can find out about Rawden and Shape Shifter DNA.” It’s all I’ve been able to think about these last few days. What is in those files, especially the one on Serena?

“I think that’s a great idea,” Michael replies. I knew he would be gung ho, since he had backed me up with Max the other day.

At this point Maria enters the room, catching the tail end of the conversation. “Oh good, you two worked things out. It’s the tea, I tell you, rips down your defenses.”

I laugh so hard, I almost spit the tea out. “Actually, Maria. We weren’t talking about that.”

Maria’s face falls. “But were fine,” I assure her.

“No,” she says. “You can’t just sweep an issue like that under the rug. Next times things get heated there it will be again and believe me it will be much worse.”

I love Maria but I don’t have time for this stuff right now. I turn my attention back to the lab. “So you’ll come with me?” I ask Michael.

“Come with you where?” Maria asks.

“K laboratories,” I explain and Maria sits down on the couch in a sulk.

“Of course. I’m surprised though,” Michael answers.

“About what?”

“That Max changed his mind.”

“Ya,” I bite my lip nervously. ‘About that. He didn’t.”

‘What? Your going to disobey the King and go?” he asks dumfounded.

“Oh, as if you haven’t done that hundred’s of times,” I protest. “And I am the Queen.” And I do have more personas than just prissy parker, I will have you know.

“True,” he can’t find any fault in my logic.

“I can’t believe your thinking of doing this.” Maria says. “Max will kill you.”

I ignore Maria. Time is running out. We’ll be going back soon and we need that information. Max will understand.

“Look, I have it all figured out. I know exactly how to do this and today is perfect. It’s Saturday and other than a few overachievers no one will be in the office.”

“So how do we do this?” he asks.

“It’s not really how, but who.”

“Who?” he repeats, not catching my meaning.

“Ava,” I answer.

“Can we trust her?” he asks.

I nod. “We have a shape shifter among us now. I say we put her to good use.”

I know he’s skeptical, but this is the only way. “Come on, it’s 10 am. If we leave now we’ll be there early afternoon.” I hope I’m able to convince him.

Michael grabs his coat and we head for the door. “But,” Maria yells after us. ‘What about working out Michael’s repressed anger?” she asks.

“We’ll do it in the car,” Michael mumbles.

Maria flashes him a look of disbelief.

“It’s a long drive Maria. We’ll work it out.”

***********

When we arrive at Isabelle’s and explain the situation, Ava is more than happy to come. I knew she would be. Problem is, Isabelle also wants to come.

“You can’t,” I explain. “We need someone here to help Max in case anything happens in Roswell. We were also hoping…” I look nervously at Michael.

“Distract him,” Michael explains.

I was thinking more along the lines of asking her to be our alibi, but Michael has always been blunt.

“What….what exactly are you going to tell him?” she asks, mortified.

“That Ava and I are bonding at the mall,” I explain, “And that Maria and Michael need some alone time. And Kyle…well I’m not to worried about Max contacting him”

“Oh god. This isn’t good,” Isabelle crosses her arms. “Wait, Kyle is going?” Now she looks a little jealous.

“He’s been there before and we need a 4th,” I explain.

She nods in understanding.

“Ok?” I ask her.

“I don’t like it….but I will go along with it.

**************

“Wow, I didn’t expect to see you today,” Kyle says when I show up at his front door.

“Look, I know you didn’t….but Kyle, I need your help.”

“Hmm, when have I heard that line before?” he asks and I laugh. I thought he’d still be mad about the other day, but clearly he isn’t. Kyle’s not exactly the type to hold a grudge. Well, ok he is, but not when it comes to me.

“Ok Liz, “ he says grabbing his jacket. ‘But just so you know. I’m not sleeping with you again. So if future max is back, tell him no way.”

I laugh. “Don’t you need to know what your agreeing to?” I ask him as we get in the car with Ava and Michael.

“Nope. You asked so I’m at your service.”

He really is one in a million isn’t he? I make a mental note, that I have to apologize to both him and Michael before this trip is over.

So now, here we are, the four of us, driving to Santa Fe, to investigate K laboratories, hoping we don’t end up investigated ourselves.

Part 27

So the plan is pretty simple. Ava will shape shift into the director of K laboratories named Norm Vernon.

She went by his home as soon as we arrived in Santa Fe, pretending to be selling Avon cosmetics. With her blonde ringlets, blue eyes and the short skirt she was wearing, he was more than happy to invite her in and listen to her spiel. Men-there just so easy to predict sometimes, aren’t they?

She was able to get a good enough look at him to shape shift into him and while she mind warped into thinking she was showing him some products he could buy for his wife, was actually swiping the security card from his wallet.

There will be 2 security guards on the main floor. Ava will mind warp them so that they don’t see the rest of us as we follow closely behind her.

We are now outside of K laboratories, getting ready to go in. Ava is a few feet ahead, her hand on the door. We await her signal that its time. She can only hold the warp for 4 minutes, AKA we have very little time.

Just as she’s about to open it I remember something. “Don’t, the cameras,” I shout.

“What?’ she asks coming back and we all make our way to the side of the building. “There are at least 4 cameras on the main floor and 2 in the corridor of every floor,” I explain. I don’t know why I didn’t think of it before.

“Ava can just warp them,” Kyle suggests. “I don’t see what the big deal is.”

I roll me eyes. “She can’t warp a camera Kyle.”

“She’s right, I can make people see something by going into their mind. The camera has no mind. It will record exactly what happens. Anyone who’s watching it will know you are all there.”

“Shit,” Michael curses.

“Wait, maybe I can pause them, you know, for like a minute. It will just look like nothing is happening. No one will know they are frozen in place….but we have to move fast for this to work.”

‘Oh god. Why don’t I have a good feeling about this…” Kyle mutters as we all head back into position.

Ava opens the door and enters the building. “Hello Mr. Vernon,” the guard greets her.

***********

The elevator opens to the 11th floor and we all remain inside. Ava as Mr.Vernon, exits, immediately freezing the 2 cameras. She then inserts the passkey and opens the door as we all follow and the cameras begin to roll once again.

“This boardroom over here.” I take them to the place I had found the file on Serena but when we open it find it empty.

“They must of known you’d come back,” Michael reasons.

“Let’s split up,” Kyle suggests as we all take a different section of the floor. I just hope the information is still here.

Ten minutes into the search I hear Michael, “Liz, come over here.”

We all run over to the very back of the floor to find Michael standing beside a large file cabinet that he has blasted open.

“They’ve got a file on each of us; me, Max, Isabelle, Ava and Serena,” he says tossing us each one. “

The one he tosses my way is marked file AB1, it’s the same one I saw the last time I was here. I immediately open in and begin to read.

“Oh shit, what is all of this stuff?” Kyle says. He has Max’s file. “All these pictures of Max but this one Is subject 1a, this one is 1b. I don’t get it.”

My jaw drops open as it all begins to make sense to me. “They were trying to clone them.”

**************

Were are now in the car on the way back to Roswell. Ava, Kyle and I are reading the files while Michael drives.

What we have determined is that even though the Rawden’s and shifters were able to clone Rawden’s for Kivar’s army on Antar they were unable to clone Antarians. That’s what they wanted, to clone us.

“Why?”

“He’d have the royals on his side.”

‘So what happened?” Kyle asks. He’s sitting in the passenger seat with Michael, map in hand.

“Well if what’s in these files is everything, they tried cloning on Antar but the clones couldn’t survive,” I say showing the picture of a 6 year old Max Evans look alike hooked up to machines.

“They thought that it was something defective on Antar so they came here to earth instead,” Ava explains.

“Why?”

“They knew that Zan, Vilandra and Rath had been cloned with human DNA and that they had survived. They had to come to earth to access human DNA. All traces of it had been eliminated when the clones were originally sent to earth,” I explain. They were probably trying to prevent the cloning of Antarians.

“Did they have any more luck here?” Michael asks.

I feel a lump in my throat as I stare at my daughters file. “In the last year they’ve only focused on one person. Serena.”

“She had escaped. They probably wanted a clone so they could replace her. Kivar would have his wife back, only she’d be compliant,” Michael reasons.

“Have they had any luck?” Michael asks.

I look up from the file, my face ashen. “A clone of Serena was born 4 months ago as a 22 year old woman.”

“Holy Shit!” Kyle screams

‘Where is she now?” Michael asks,

The birth was the last event recorded. That’s where the file ends. “I don’t know.”

************

We are an hour away from Roswell when a horrible feeling comes over me. It’s like worry, anger, shock and disappointment all rolled into one.

“What is it?” Ava asks touching my arm gently, sensing my discomfort.

“Max.”

Kyle turns around in the front seat. “Does he know?”

“I don’t know.”

“Do that thing you do. You know, where it’s like you transport yourself to where he is like an observer.”

I close my eyes and take deep breathes. Eventually everything goes blank and then I’m there at the house. Max is pacing, while Isabelle tries to calm him down.

“Shopping with Ava?” he asks in disbelief, looking at his watch. “Isabelle, it’s dark. She’s been gone 10 hours.’

“Max, it’s fine. I’m sure she’ll be home soon,” Isabelle replies. But she doesn’t look convinced, I can see the start of worry on her face.

“No, something’s off here….I can’t reach Michael or Kyle…and the way you’ve been acting. Lately our connection has been getting stronger but right now….It’s like she’s shut me off. I can’t feel her.”

“Ok, so she’s not shopping. They’ve all gone somewhere,” she admits. Oh come on Isabelle. Don’t tell him.

“Where?” Max demands

“Listen Max, it’s not important.”

“The hell it is. You’re going to tell me right now Isabelle.”

“Don’t pull your King card. It’s so bloody juvenile.”

“I am and I don’t care how juvenile it is.”

“They went to K laboratories. They should be back tonight. Happy?” Her arms are folded across her chest.

“What? After I specifically said it was a bad idea?” He looks pissed. If I knew I didn’t have to deal with him later I would almost say that a pissed of max is quite the turn on.

“Max, she’s the Queen. You can’t keep her on a leash. Besides it was a good idea.”

“You sent her off with Ava. Sent them all off with her. They might not be safe.”

“What are you saying?”

When Max doesn’t answer, she continues. “You know something about Ava don’t you?”

He gives her a look as though he’s trying to decide how to reply. “If their not home in an hour were starting a search.”

“Well?” Michael asks when I’m back in reality.

“She caved. He knows.”

“Just great. Just great,” he mutters.

“He’ll forget all about it when he sees what we’ve found,” I explain.

“Forget about it? We are talking about Max here right?” Kyle asks with a laugh.

The group continues to lighten the mood with jokes but I tune it out, thinking instead about the fact that Max doesn’t trust Ava. I know in my heart of heart that she’s on our side. I can trust her with my life. Whatever Max thinks it is he knows, he’s wrong.

************

“Ava, tell me about our life before?” I whisper. She and I are sitting in the backseat our heads back, close to sleep.

“What do you want to know?”

I shrug my shoulders. “From the few memories I have, I know that we were close. Tell me about that.”

“Yes, “she says with a yawn. “We were best friends….until I started working for Kivar.”

“Don’t. Let’s not even talk about that.”

“Ok.” She looks relived. “We used to go to the theatre a lot. We played with Serena all the time. She had this tree house on the palace yard. Of course we had to have 4 guards accompany us but we had so much fun playing pirate. I used to braid your hair all the time. You always lectured me about my sexual escapades,” she laughs at all of the memories.

I laugh too. I can’t recall any of them yet, but I hope to.

“Do you want me to braid your hair now?” she asks.

“That would be great,” I say as I watch her open her purse and pull out a brush and elastic.

I turn my back to her and let her begin.

A few minutes into the braid I get a flash.

Ava is sitting on Theea’s bed braiding her hair as tears stream down Theea’s face. “Oh sweetie, I wish I could take away your pain.”

“You being here does help,” Theea says, her voice hoarse. “Will you stay here tonight? With me and Serena?”

“What about Zan? He just came back tonight. Won’t he want to sleep next to you?” she asks.

Theea wipes the tears off of her face and makes an angry face. “I don’t care if he does because I don’t want to sleep with him.”

Av’s jaw drops. “Surely, you don’t mean that,” Ava responded, fighting extremely hard to hold back a laugh.” After all it was just a fight.

“It was so much more than that, Ava and you know it.”

The braid finished, Ava put down the brush and turned to look at her cousin.

“What am I going to do?” Theea asks.

“I don’t know, Theea. I don’t know.”

“What was that?” I ask Ava once I snap out of the flash. Every muscle in my body hurts and I choke back a sob in my own chest.

“What did you see?” she asks. She’s trying to remain calm but it’s not working. She looks almost scared.

“You were braiding my hair. I was crying. Zan and I….we had fought and I was refusing to go to him.”

Suddenly something occurs to me. “Were Zan and I happy?” I had always assumed we were. I mean as Max and Liz we were, I mean are. This whole thing is so confusing.

“It was just a fight Liz,” she replies.

“What did he do?” I ask,

“I don’t remember that night in particular,” she says. I can tell she doesn’t want to say anything more but I give her a look that causes her to continue. “Look, you had a hard time after Serena was born. Things on Antar were changing because of Kivar. Max had to travel a lot to deal with the rumors of unrest, to supervise battles. At times you felt abandoned. That’s why we spent so much time together. But he loved you….and you loved him…of that I am sure.”

Just a fight she said. The tears I saw were of a heart demolished beyond repair. The results of a mere fight over Zan being a way too long could not have resulted in that.

Just a fight? What the hell is going on?

Part 28

We are home. Yes, I have come to call the house I live in with Max and Serena and the kids home. But I dread walking through those front doors. It’s been a long day with so much new information my mind feels like it is overflowing. The last thing I need is to have to face Max. I love him, but after witnessing his conversation with Isabelle, I know we are in for a hellish homecoming.

Michael, Ava and Kyle have agreed to come into the house with me. They say they are anxious to discuss our findings and while I am sure that is true, I know they also want to assume some of the blame for our very fruitful but naughty excursion.

We enter the house and walk straight into the living room to find Max and Serena sitting silently on the couch.

Isabelle is sitting across from them in the arm chair and looks up at us guiltily. “They know. I’m sorry but Max wouldn’t take no for an answer.”

“We know,” Michael pops up.

“But how?” Isabelle questions.

“Oh you know, just that mental ability she has to travel places as an observer,” Kyle explains in a defensive tone.

“And from what we heard, Max only had to ask once and you barely put up a fight,” Ava adds, folding her arms across her chest angrily.

“Guys, don’t,” I protest. I know they are only trying to protect me but I don’t want them pinning this all on Isabelle. “Isabelle, it’s not your fault. I should never have asked you to lie for me. I should have just told Max the truth.”

“I wouldn’t have let you go.” It’s the first thing he’s said since we entered the room and his voice sounds strange, almost monotonic. He’s trying extremely hard not to raise his voice and it’s coming out as slow and even as molasses.

“Well, I’d go anyway. You are not my keeper,” I yell in frustration.

Max gets up from the couch angrily and walks towards me. “Don’t you get that I make the decisions I do to protect us. I was on Antar for 4 years. 4 years. I know things the rest of you don’t.”

So much for keeping his cool. He’s full on angry right now.

Now it’s Michael’s turn to join in the fight. “Your way, the safe route gets us no where. Liz gets information and she runs with it. She takes action. You just watch from the sidelines.”

“I just want to keep you all safe. What’s wrong with that?”

“What’s wrong with it?” Kyle yells in disbelief. “This is about so much more than just us. This is about the fate of a planet, maybe more than one planet.”

Isabelle gets up and cautiously walks towards Max, putting her hand on his shoulder. “He’s right, Max. It shouldn’t be us you’re trying to save.”

Max’s composure crumples. “But you are all I have. I can’t just put you at risk.”

“Max, I know it’s not easy. It’s hard for everyone but you have to….” Ava starts to say but Max interrupts her.

“You don’t get to say that. You betrayed us and then hid here until it was convenient for you.”

“That wasn’t how it is…I know it looks like that but…” Ava tries to explain.

“No,” I yell. “Turning on each other won’t accomplish anything. We found something today, that you all need to know. Serena,” I say looking go my daughter. “You’ve been successfully cloned.”

“What?” Max asks in disbelief.

“See, I told you Maxwell. That’s the kind of info that action will get you.”

“Michael,” I warn.

“I think it’s time we get Maria out here,” Serena says.

“And my dad,” Kyle adds.

“Can you go pick them both up?” I ask.

Kyle nods. He turns to Isabelle. “What about Jesse?”

Isabelle just shakes her head. “He’s completely out of all of this.”

**************

An hour later we are settled in the living room going over the files, looking for answers.
“Any idea where this clone is?” Maria asks.

“How do we even know she’s the real Serena?” Michael asks pointing to my daughter. Is it really a surprise that he’s suspicious?

“I know, she’s my daughter. I can feel it,” Max explains. Again I feel a rawness tug at my heart because I don’t.

I think Max feels what I’m feeling through our connection because he approaches me and gently puts his hand on my shoulder.

“You ok?” he asks.

I answer his question with a question. “You still mad?”

He sighs as thought the weight of the world is on his shoulders. “It’s not all on you now, it’s on all of us.”

“But I’m the King and I have a certain responsibility. You could have been hurt.”

“We all could at anytime,” I protest. “And we know that going back to Antar….that there’s probably a greater chance that we will die than live.”

Ava sees us deep in conversation. “Look Max,” she says. “I should apologize for my part in this. I should have convinced Liz to tell you where she was going.”

“Damn right you should have.” He’s glaring at her.

She’s looking down at her feel guiltily.

“Max, it was my idea. I asked her to help. None of this is her responsibility.”

“Liz, it’s ok.” Ava doesn’t want me to defend her. She probably doesn’t want to cause problems between Max and I.

“No. It’s not ok,” I protest and then watch the look they exchange.

“What?” I ask. “You both remember something about Antar that I don’t. It’s about Zan and Theea isn’t it?” I look to Ava who just looks away.

“You said we weren’t always happy.” I’m putting the pieces together now. “Was that true?” I look to Max.

Max’s hands curl into tight fists. “What did you tell her, Ava?” His eyes have darkened. He looks at her with both accusation and contempt.
“Nothing. She had a flash. That’s all,” she mutters.

“A flash created by you no doubt.” He just shakes his head.

Ava just shakes her head. “I’m not here to create trouble. You’ve done enough of that.”

That’s it. There still not letting me in on this supposed secret of my previous life on Antar but they’ve eluded to it and well the ideas that are starting to grow in my mind are not pretty. I need to know now and I won’t take no for an answer.

“One of you better start talking and I mean now.” Now it’s my turn to glare.

“I’ll let you two talk,” Ava tries to make a quick escape.

“I don’t think so,” again Max glares at her and so she stays put.

“Max, this isn’t a game anymore. I need to know.”

“I know Liz, it’s just finding the right words to tell you.”

“Max,” I say putting my hand on his arm and then a whole series of flashes begin. They are powerful, at times almost numbing and at other times I feel a powerful rage building inside of me.

Zan has been back for 2 days but he’s been too tied up to spend intimate evenings with his wife. Theea walks down the hallway towards their room, hoping to finally get a moment alone with him. As soon as she turn the corner, the room in view, she sees Natalia, the maid leaving their room.

Her hands are behind her head, redoing the bun that has obviously come unraveled. Her face is flushed.

When she sees Theea she hurries by.

Theea quickens her own pace and opens the door, not knowing what she will find.

When she opens the door, Zan is bare-chested, in the process of putting a shirt on.

He turns around and smiles when he sees his wife. “Hey beautiful.” He acts as though nothing has happened.

Theea turns around and makes a quick retreat.

**********

“Oh come on, there are lots of explanations for that. Is that all you have?” Ava asks.

“No, yesterday, I went into the kitchen and Natalia was there eating her dinner on break. You should have seen the look she gave me,” Theea explains.

“Guilt?” Ava asks.

“No, we are past that now. It’s more of a smugness. Like she knows something I don’t,” Theea burries her face in her hands. ‘Oh god. She does. Doesn’t she?”

********

“Are you sure. I mean the way your acting is only making things worse. Avoiding him isn’t going to make things better. Zan loves you. There’s just been a lot going on right now. Our world is unstable. There are tough decisions to be made. That’s all it is,” Ava reassures her.

“No. he’s been back 3 weeks and ……he’s just…he’s been gone for long periods before but when he comes back he….things are just different this time.”

*********

It’s early morning. Theea has spent the last two nights in Serena’s room nursing her high fever.

She walks to her own room, hoping to crawl into bed and snuggle up beside Zan for a few hours..

When she opens the door her heart breaks into a million pieces.

Zan is not alone.

They are together. Their upper bodies are bare, flesh against flesh, their lower halves are covered in a thin white sheet.

Long dark hair. Legs intertwined. The room begins to spin.

Zan wakes up and sees Theea standing at the open door. “Honey, is Serena ok? Did the fever break?” he asks still in a sleep induced haze.

Then he feels the weight of the body against him and the realization hits him.

“Oh God. Theea…I” There are no words that can adequately defend.

Their eyes meet. Hurt, terror, sadness are exchanged.

Tears stream down Theeas face. Again she walks away.

When the flash ends I find myself pulling away from Max. “How could you?” I scream.

“That’s why I didn’t want to tell you. I wanted to spare you from feeling the hurt again.”

I shake me head. “No, that’s not why. You’re a coward.” I can feel it coming off of him in waves.

“Zan only slept with Ava once. It was a mistake, ” he explains. An explanation that has come to late.

Wait, Ava? What is he talking about?

“Zan slept with Ava too? God, Max.” This is all too much to comprehend. “You should really get what dirty little secret you let me see straight. I guess you could have kept that from me, another bomb for you to drop a few months from now. ”

“What do you mean ?”

Do I really have to say it? “That gold digging chamber maid.”

"What?”

He immediately brushes past me and grabs Ava. "What the fuck is going on?” he growls. “You better tell me now or so help me god.”

“Ava?” I ask in a whisper. Did she really play a part in Zan’s betrayal?

She walks towards us. What’s that I see in her eyes? Regret, sadness? I can’t really tell for sure.

“If you really want to understand what happened you have to see. You both have to touch me as well as each other.”

We form a circle. I touch both of their arms and wait for the flashes to begin.

Part 29

Theea enters Zan’s room in a white velvet negligee, her hair down just the way he loves it.

Zan is sitting up in bed reading. He closes his book in surprise, he didn’t expect to see Theea tonight.

“How is Serena?”

“She’s fine Zan. Her fever broke and she’s sleeping peacefully.”

Theea sits on the side of Zan’s bed.

“Do you want to talk?” he asks her.

Theea shakes her head. “No need Zan. I forgive you. I know how hard things have been for you and I just made them harder.”

Theea removes her negligee in one fluid motion and walks towards Zan.

“Your so beautiful,” he says as he runs his hands through her long chocolate hair.

***********

Zan wakes up when Theea enters his room in the morning. Thinking she had snuck out to check on Serena, he asks how Serena is. Then he feels the weight against him and looks up into Ava’s blue eyes. How did this happen?

*************

Theea enters Zan’s room to find him in bed with a very naked Natalia, who flashes a smug look her way.

-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-

When the flash ends I'm angry.

“So, what do you want? The mind-warper of the year award?” I ask Ava when the flash breaks.

“You Bitch!” Max screams as he runs towards Ava.

Let them fight things out till the end I don’t care. I take the opportunity to quietly slip out of the house.

I know you think I’m running and you’re saying that is what Liz Parker likes to do. But I’m not. I just need to think and I can’t in there with them all looking at me; Isabelle’s face etched with guilt as though she is somehow responsible for her brothers stupidity and Maria’s look of compassion, Kyle’s I told you so expression….I could go on here but I think you get the picture.

Here I thought Max was keeping something from me for my own good, when really it was his good he was worried about, not to mention keeping a false dream alive. Soul mates who had found each other again in another world. It was a romantic notion and so easy to believe. What a joke.

No wonder it was so easy for Tess to exploit us on earth, she knew Ava had done it successfully before and as Liz Parker I was defenseless to stop her, clueless and in the dark.

I hear footsteps behind me. “Serena,” I whisper. My voice isn’t any stronger than that, the wind having been knocked right out of me.

“How did you know it was me?” she asks, because my back is still to her.

“Maybe I know the sound of your steps,” I say as I turn around.

She shakes her head. “I think it’s our connection getting stronger.”

Well, that would be the only good news of the day.

She knows what I’m going to say next but I say it anyway. “You knew.”

“Yes.”

“That’s what you kept telling Max he should tell me.”

“Dad, he’s dying to see you.”

“I need time Serena.” Do you blame me, really?

She nods. ‘Look mom I…”

But we are interrupted by a very blunt Ava walking up behind us. ‘Go Serena. Liz and I need to talk.” Her voice is static, like a robot.

“Look, I’m not going anywhere…I” Serena starts.

Ava’s right, we do need to talk. There are so many gaps I need filled in. “Go,” I tell my daughter. “I will be fine.” I won’t drag her into this mess between Max and I.

I turn to face the blonde ringlets before me. When I look at Ava now I see Tess but I have it wrong, don’t I? It was Tess that was a carbon copy of Ava, not the other way around.

‘So it was a warp,” I say.

‘Sort of.”

“Don’t be cryptic.”

“Just let me start at the beginning. You see, while Tess could only warp, I am also a shifter…”

I remember and I have the horrible sense that I know where she is going with all of this.

“I needed you to pull away from Max. It was Kivar’s idea. The only way he said you would go with me to safety when the time came.”

I nod, knowing she is referring to the bargain she made with Kivar over me.

She continues. “I warped you, for a few weeks before, so you would see Natalia leaving Zan’s room, her smag face etc. to plant the seed in your mind. Then that night I went to Zan and I shifted into Theea. He thought he was making love to Theea.”

The very thought of it sickens me.

“In the morning I shifted back into myself, so that was what Zan would see. I then warped you when you entered so that you would see Natalia. If you had seen me, you wouldn’t have come with me.”

“All of this for a plan Kivar would never follow through on. He took us all with one quick swoop,” I say sadly.

Ava nods. “Now I see Kivar wanted to weaken Zan and he succeeded. After that night Zan became so consumed with winning you back that he lost complete control of the Kingdom making Kivar’s job as easy as pie.”

She looks at me. “I’m sorry. As I told you before, you were the only family I had and I thought I was saving you.”

“As I told you before, you can’t do something wrong for the right reasons. From what I’ve heard of Theea she is not so different from me and I would not have wanted to be saved at the expense of those I love.”

“Look. Hate me all you want but don’t hate Max. First of all, it wasn’t him, but Zan that night in the room and secondly he didn’t really betray Theea…he though I was her,” she tries to defend Zan.

“That’s where you’re wrong Ava. He did betray me. Not as Zan. But as Max.”

She scrunches up her nose in confusion. “But I thought it was confirmed that he never really slept with Tess? I just don’t get it.”

“I’m talking about the lie, Ava. Max betrayed me all these months with his lies.”
