I can hardly believe my eyes when the pirate captain extends his elbow to me. For a second, I can't even breathe. "Oh my," I say keeping my voice low, although I want to shout. I know Liz hears me but I don't know for sure if Michael does. I feel my face go warm and I hope I haven't turned red again. I pray he won't notice.

I smile at him, trying to look demure, but I'm sure I'm doing it wrong. I'm not a lady. I'm a servant. How could a pirate captain be escorting me? He's an outlaw, but he's important. I could tell by the way Lady Lynn was talking to him and to Max. They're notables in this town. And they did help us.

Michael's jacket is rough and a bit dirty, but I've never been escorted by a man who made me feel so different. I know for sure this is going to be a new life.

"Will you be staying with us for a time or are you hurrying back to the ship?" I ask.


*Max*

Isabel accepts Alex's offer and I relax a bit. It's only an escort across town afterall, but Alex is a good man. I know he will treat my sister right.

I turn to see that the other ladies are ready to continue and I'm surprised to realize that Kyle now has Tess on his arm and that Michael is actually offering his to Maria. It's so rare to see anything like a gentlemanly gesture from Michael that I forget sometimes that he is capable of them.

Of course, as Maria accepts, I realize that Liz is now the only woman left alone. This is a situation which certainly cannot be tolerated. She is far too lovely a woman, too sweet and kind, too strong and beautiful, to ever be left out.

I offer Liz a slight bow, tiping my hat at her. "My lady. Will you do me the honor of accompanying me to your new abode?" I straighten only part way as I offer her my elbow. I watch her carefully, hoping to detect any signs of reluctance, because I'd hate to think I'm presuming too much. Having her for a partner, even in a walk across town, would be a great honor indeed.

I am a little surprised as Alex, closely followed by Kyle and Michael, offer themselves as escorts. Isabel, Maria and Tess seem quite agreeable to the suggestions though, and I too find myself smiling as Max proceeds to do the same, holding out his arm after tipping his hat to me. offer Liz a slight bow, tiping my hat at her. "My lady. Will you do me the honor of accompanying me to your new abode?"

The offer causes a strange feeling inside that I cannot quite place. It is not an unpleasant feeling though, and I look up at him, smiling. "Certainly M'Lord... You are most kind to offer..." I respond softly as I settle my hand in the crook of his arm, lifting the hem of my skirt just slightly to make sure I do not trip as we continue.

I hesitate a moment, feeling uncertain and to my surprise, a little nervous. Not that I feel scared of the captain, in fact it is something quite the opposite. I feel quite comfortable in his company, and over the journey, I have, on the few occassions I had chance, enjoyed talking to him. Despite the fact he is a pirate, he strikes me as being more of a gentleman than many of those I knew in my past. Feeling my small pouch brush against the side of my leg, as it hangs from my wrist, I am reminded of the present contained within. "Captain, I do not know if I properly expressed my appreciation of the kind gift you gave me earlier... It is quite lovely, thank you..."

Michael

"Oh my." I hear her whisper but don't show reaction to her voice. It was lower than before, as if I'd just taken her breath away. She seemed surprised that I would offer her my arm and escort. I know I can be a little bit gruff but with the ladies...I'm always gentle.

She smiles at me and my heart starts pounding loudly in my chest. I can't quite figure out what is going on inside of me. I've been with lots of ladies, some filthy rich, while others just servants. I'm experienced, but this pixie...she send me teetering close to the edge of sanity.

With her arm tucked safely into the crook of my arm, I place my other hand on top of hers. I can't help but feel a slight tremble in them and briefly wonder if she is frightened of me. But as I look down, her expression is anything but fear. Her eyes are wide and her lips are parted just a little. The warmth of her hand seeps into mine. I gently let my fingers shift, feeling her skin beneather my fingertips. They are not as smooth as a noble woman's but not callosed and rough as a slaves. My guess is that she is a lady in waiting.

"Will you be staying with us for a time or are you hurrying back to the ship?"

Her voice brings me out of my thoughts.

"Oh...um..." I suddenly find myself stumbling over my words. I quickly clear my throat gaining my whits. "I'm not too sure at the moment. I have not seen Isabel in such a long time and Max and I have some...things to discuss."

"No. I'm an only child." Kyle had replied and I sensed that there was something more he wasn’t saying, but I certainly wouldn’t press him for that information at the moment. I was simply content to share his company for as long as I was welcomed to do so.

"Since you are staying with Lady Liz and Lady Maria in Alex's home, I'd be more than happy to continue escorting you." He says to me just as I’ve watched Isabel accept Alex’s offer and as I turned I saw the other Captain offering for Maria. Somehow I was certain Isabel’s brother would ask Liz. It seemed interesting I must say how things were coming out.

I smiled at Kyle and nodded, “I’d be honored to have your continued company. And perhaps your task master will be kind enough to give you time to visit for the time that you are still on shore leave.” I hint aloud, not about to be silent about my thoughts like many ladies often were. It was one of my faults as far as my parents had been concerned. Still, it had been my greatest pleasure in speaking straight especially with unwanted suitors.

In America, they expected more obedience and silence in women then she would ever allow herself to be.

“I’d be honored to have your continued company. And perhaps your task master will be kind enough to give you time to visit for the time that you are still on shore leave.” Tess says loud enough for the others to hear.

I look to Max, knowing that it was he who she was referring too. Right now, he controled me in a way that not even my father had. Max was my key to freedom. I only need to gain his trust and friendship.

"I'm sure once my duties are done, the gracious Captain should have no trouble with me keeping a beautiful woman company when she requests." I raise a brow to Max in question.

Liz's hands on my arm do surprising things to my concentration. Maybe this wasn't such a good idea. Having her so close might be a ... distraction.

But I try to pay attention to what she's saying. She's thanking me for the gift again? "I'm glad it pleases you," I tell her. She is beautiful as any lady I've ever known, I'm glad for her to have the means to see for herself. I do recall that she'd promised to share it with the other ladies, which will be harder since she's no longer abiding with them, but I suppose there's still Tess and Maria to take her up on that promise, if she choses to keep it. As long as she makes use of it, as well, I'll be satisfied.

"I'm sure once my duties are done, the gracious Captain should have no trouble with me keeping a beautiful woman company when she requests." Kyle tells Tess, just loud enough to be sure I hear it and I know that while it sounds like a statement, in truth, it's a question and a request. But by accident or design, he got the core of it. 'when she requests.'

Turning slightly, I nod at the two of them. "There is much to be done yet, even 'though we are at dock. But when the labor is done, he will be allowed some freedom."

I turn back to Tess. "When I'm not working for the Captain, I shall be at your call." I say quieter so that only she could hear. I don't know what compelled me but I wanted to spend more time with her. I wanted to see her smile and hear her musical laughter. It pleased me more than I've ever felt to see her happy.

I smiled as I heard Kyle's response and felt myself blush. "I'm sure once my duties are done, the gracious Captain should have no trouble with me keeping a beautiful woman company when she requests."

"There is much to be done yet, even 'though we are at dock. But when the labor is done, he will be allowed some freedom." The captain of whom I'd spoken responds and I turn to give him a smile.

"Just mind that your own sister also speaks well of Kyle. As long as you don't work him as a slave and are fair, I'll completely understand the need for his working." I say simply, allowing my smile to remain in place before I turned and looked up at Kyle, stepping a bit closer to him as we walked along.

"When I'm not working for the Captain, I shall be at your call." Kyle says and I can't help but giggle slightly at that.

"You best watch it, Kyle. Else, you'll find yourself bored with idle ladies chatter because your company would be welcomed at anytime and if you allow yourself to be at my call when the Captain does not need you, well... you might find yourself growing rather tired of my presence." I laughed softly and simply smiled up at him. "Your presence around me will always be a welcomed and desired event as far as I'm concerned."

"No M'Lady...it is my honour..." Alex says softly and I simply smile. He's always so sweet and respectful, something that surprises me and yet earns a great measure of respect from me. He doesn't seem to have the large ego that most men have about themselves. The way he looks at me is so different from how most men have. It's as though I'm really someone he wants to know rather then just some prize to be won. It's refreshing.

"Shall we...?" He asks and I nod, smiling.

"Yes, we shall." I walk at his side, my hand hooked on his elbow. "As with Tess wishing to have the company of Kyle, I would like very much to have the chance to visit with you on occassion as well, Alex. Your friendship has been a very welcome gift to me." I tell him softly as I glance over at Max and the others, thinking that it seemed strange that we were evened out so well and also that it was rather interesting to see that my brother seemed interested in Liz.

Glancing at Michael, I can see that he too seems to be showing a different form of interest in Maria then I'd known him to show in other women. It was a rare thing, but it wasn't one of the things I'd be speaking of with him later. There were other issues my brother, Michael and I needed to talk about tonight.

"You best watch it, Kyle. Else, you'll find yourself bored with idle ladies chatter because your company would be welcomed at anytime and if you allow yourself to be at my call when the Captain does not need you, well... you might find yourself growing rather tired of my presence." She laughed and smiled. It was the sweetest sight I've ever seen.

"Your presence around me will always be a welcomed and desired event as far as I'm concerned."

This makes my heart thump faster. My pulse raced and I couldn't stop returning her smile.

"As long as you do not tire of my presence." Before we know it we are standing in front of a small cottage. "I guess we are at your new abode."

I didn't want my time to end just yet with her but I know I can't impose on her. She's probably tired and would like to get some rest. I myself see that I have some settling in to do with my new 'shipmate' also.
