Kate was trying to smile...but it wasn't easy. It wasn't really a discussion...more of a battle plan. The First Lady had explained it to her at considerable length...and allowed little opportunity for Kate's opinion. The objective was clear...to launch Trisha Anderson's career in politics.
'The Princess' wasn't even in the room yet, although Mrs. Anderson had been talking for fifty minutes. The short version was that the First Daughter was getting her own protective detail because she'd be going out a lot more...a whole lot more.
The plan was for Trisha, whose previous need for Secret Service protection had consisted mostly of getting her back and forth to the haughty private academy she attended in Bethesda along with the daughter's of most of the inside-the beltway elite, to start to get her face out in public. Her signature theme was going to be one of physical fitness, which Kate thought might get interesting since the girl and her friends were the quintessential couch potatos..
No don't misunderstand...Kate didn't actively dislike Trisha and in fact knew her largely by reputation. But it appeared that most of the Secret Service agents who DID know her didn't care much for the girl. Perhaps she wasn't ALL that bad as arrogant rich girls with a sense of entitlement went...but arrogant rich girls often went rather far in that direction...and having your daddy as President clearly didn't help.
"Ah...here's our darling now....," said the First Lady.
Trisha anderson entered the room. She was attractive..or would have been if she'd had a smile rather than the look of distaste that was so obvious on her face. The scowl continued....aimed mostly at her mother...as she turned the chair around and sat on it, leaning forward on the seatback. "Well...I'm here..."
"Darling...this is Miss Powers...she'll be in charge of the new Secret Service detail that Daddy is going to have guard you...," Katie couldn't help noticing the young 'lady's' expression of total disdain. She wasn't quite sure if it was aimed at her or the First Lady.
"I'm pleased to meet you, Trisha," Kate said, holding out her hand. It lingered there in space for long seconds....
"Whatever...'" said Trisha Anderson.
Janet Pemberton smiled as she saw the young couple drive up...it was the first time she'd seen them since the wedding.
"Well...Mr. and Mrs. Douglas...."
Joey smiled and gripped Andrew's hand tightly when she heard Jan....she still wasn't used to that name and it would be a long time before she could use it publicly.
"Well....just Andrew Douglas and Joey Guerin for the time being, Jan....at least in public."
"Well...does that mean you won't be interested in my surprise?"
"What surprise?"
"Well...We've decided to do a camp at the end of summer...not a day camp...but a two-week live-in camp in the old cabins for twelve girls whose parents want to get them in shape."
"You mean like a weight loss camp?"
"No...a real conditioning camp just to get in better shape. If you two would be the live-in counselors it would be a great chance for you to get in shape before your own speed and strength camp two weeks later..."
"I'm not just sure..." said Joey uncertainly...hoping Janet couldn't read her mind. But apparently it WAS that obvious, as Jan continued.
"Yeah...I'm sure you two are happy with the living arrangements you have right now...but hear me out.... or better yet, come look."
The counselor's cabin was a duplex...a small kitchenette and a bedroom on each side. But the interesting feature was the closet. At the back of the closet was a new door...that joined the two closets.
"You'd have to rein in the newlywed touchy-feely stuff in public, but once you went to your cabins....well...CABIN...I mean...that'd be up to you," said Jan, "...and it would really help us out. If it works out well these two weeks, we might make it full-time next summer. The pay would be better, and you'd have every opportunity to use all of the facilities here to really get in shape for next season."
Even before she'd finished Jan knew that she had them hooked. It had to be rough on them trying to be a couple in the same quarters they'd been children in. Jan had no doubt they'd work hard during the day...and that the night would be like a second honeymoon for them...happily longer than the weekend that they'd already had. They agreed quickly and got to work getting ready for the coming day campers.
Jan wouldn't remember about telling them about the special guest...or that they needed to fill out the Secret Service security paperwork ....until after they'd left for home...... Oh well, she'd decide. They had six weeks to do it.
