I settled on the desk next to him and held his hand,waiting for his father to come online

"Mr Whitman speaking"
"Dad, you know its me, why do you answer like that."
"Because its proper Alex, unlike your introduction was."
I sighed. "Look Dad, this is important. Im coming home tommorow and you and I are going to talk about Gertrude."
Theres silence from the other line.
"Dad?"
"Look son, I warned you that you were taking too long, and I know I said you had the week but youve tried my patience" he started ranting.
"Dad, what are you talking about?" I interrupted him.
"I've agreed with Mrs Pumpinnel, that on Friday night you and Miss Gertrude will announce your engagement."

I sit there in stunned silence.
"WHAT" I say loudly.
"Your marrying Miss Pumpinnel in the summer."
"No, I think you'll find Im not" I tell him quietly and firmly.
"I think you will Alex, because you don't have a choice."
"Oh yeah? And whys that then?"
"Because if you don't then I will disinherit you."
What. Oh my God...he'd...do that?
"Don't think I wouldn't Alex, I would. And you know I would. You will marry her, or you will lose your family, and your inheritance. And you will have nothing. You wouldn't be able to marry anyone in any state. No mother would allow you too. So you will marry her Alex. I have to go, we will discuss this later. Goodbye Alex."
He hangs up the phone.
I put the phone down and look at it.

I felt his posture stiffen as he spoke to his father and the expression his face darken,a slight frown appeared

"What's wrong?" I asked when he put the phone down "Alex!what did he say?"

I stare at the phone...I can't marry Gertrude....and in that case...I cant marry Isabel either.
....Im going to be sick.
"I need some air" I say excusing my self and quickly walking outside.
What am I going to do? I know Isabel's going to do the whole "We don't need money" thing, but the thing is...we do. She can't marry someone whos been disinherited. It's not right, and I can't do that to her.
What am I going to do?

I sit down on a near by bench and stare at the floor. "He's going to disenherit me unless I marry Gertrude" I said quietly.

My mouth dropped open in shock when he said...He's going to disinherit me unless I marry Gertrude

I couldn't understand how a father would want to ruin his son's happiness...I thought about my own father and the special relationship he shared with all my brothers.

I felt anger and indignation rise in me...His father is CRUEL and HATEFUL,DOESN'T DESERVE A SON LIKE ALEX!...screamed my mind.

Quickly my mind started racing for solutions and I closed my eyes and sank down onto the cold ground,trying to come up with a solution.

I see her sink to the ground...yeah...she knows doesn't she...she realises....that its over...that it can't work.
I stand up slowly.
"Im going to go...good...bye Isabel" I say quietly. I walk slowly towards the front of the house. I can feel tears well in my eyes.

I heard him say he was leaving and my eyes flew open and I got up and ran after him,putting my hand on his shoulder..."No wait...we have to talk first" I said

Taking his hand I led him through the front door,past the valets and on to the stables.There no one would distrub us but the horses.

"Were you just going to leave me like that and never come back?" I asked angrily

I look at the ground. "What other choice do I have Isabel?" I say quietly. "I can't stay.....I can't. I wish....well...you know what I wish....but...we can't. And I...I should go Isabel. Nothing can be gained by us talking" I say turning around, so she doesn't see the tears in my eyes.
